| Tl- the contact owns a 2000 pontiac grand am. while parked the contact entered and started the vehicle when the anti-theft system activated. the warning lights began to flash on the instrument panel. the contact stated he had to wait approximately ten to fifteen minutes with the key in the ignition before the vehicle was able to start. also, while driving at different speeds the anti theft warning lights also illuminate on the instrument panel and the engine stops running. the failure occurs intermittently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the mechanic stated the fuel pump needed to be replaced. the fuel pump was replaced but the failure continued after the repairs. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not available. the approximate failure mileage was 120,000. ds | |||

| My 2000 pontiac grand am gt with only 65000 miles has recently developed the secutiy light on the ip, and has not started once (only owner). i take care of my vehicles and have not had an issue until now. the light turns on frequently, and is upsetting to not know if it will start and you'll be stranded for a while. i just bought a new g-8 last summer. i also own a tahoe. please do the right thing and have a tsb software fix for the numerous people that continue to support gm products. it's the right thing to do. | |||

| Security light comes on and car won't start. fromwhat i have investigated it sounds like the passlock module is having issues. this has happened numorous times over the past 2 years and the mechanics trouble shoot by changing out part that have cost me over a $1000 but still the problem persists. gm doesn't recognize the passlock system as a problem but there is one and there is no good way to diagnose it. just because no one is injured it is not right that we have to experince this type of problem. from what i have read it it is not only my 2000 grand am but a lot of other pontiacs have experinced the same problem.. | |||

| Sometime when i try to start my car the security light comes on out of the blue. why it comes on randomly i have no idea. i have to wait 10 minutes to try to start the car. last year in may i tried to start the car and the security light can on so in 10 minutes i tried again. this time the security light cam on again so i waited 10 minutes again then i tried that and it started. so basically i waited 30 minutes in a parking lot in a bad section of town. today i had to go to school to do lab work when i was trying to leave the security light when on so i waited 10 minutes and i tried it again. so the security light came on again and i waited another 10 minutes. i tried for a third time and the security light went on. i have yet to try again because i'm afraid the security light will come on for a fourth time. what is the world is wrong with this picture? what's the point of having a security system if it thinks i'm trying to steal my own car. if i'm going to steal a car don't you think i'm going to steal something better and more expensive than a pontiac seriously! *tr | |||

| The security light comes on and then i can't start the car. the dealership says to put it in the acc mode until the light is solid. but that takes 10 minutes. the failure to start comes in daily, and take me ten or twenty minutes to star my car. the pass-lock feature for the car in malfunction. and now i have to reset daily. hopefully i have no life threaten situations i will have to wait ten or twenty minutes to start my car. the ignition solenoid has been replace by the dealership and now same problem has recurred. *tr | |||

| My pontiac grand am gt1 was parked in the driveway. i had driven it 45 -60 minutes before i parked it for the night. i heard a knock at my door and it was the fire dept. extinguishing out a fire on the rear end of my car! i couldn't believe what i was seeing i sure didn't hear anything prior to this event. all the tail lamps ,spoiler. essentially all that's left of the rear end is the metal all the plastic burned into a molten pile of the driveway. the car was parked and locked up for the night so i would like to know who is responsible for this. the fire dept said most likely electrical fire. i just need my car fixed. i have no other means of transportation. *jb | |||

| In the end of august 2006 i started having trouble with starting my 2000 grand am gt. it would not turn over as normal. after a couple of tries, it would work normally except the trac off light would stay lit. then it started to stall while i was driving it. i thought perhaps something was wrong with my alternator. i took it to a repair shop to have the diagnostics ran on it. they could find no reason and advised me that it could be a computer problem. they said it seemed that the computers were not communicating and the accessory computer would probably have to be reprogrammed. on september 22, 2006, the car would not start at all. i had the car towed to the dealer for repair. after they ran their own diagnostics, they advised me that the fuse block in the engine compartment was corroded and had to be replaced. is this a normal thing for a six year old car? i had stalled out while on an expressway traveling at 50 mph. fortunately, i was able to pull to the side and restart the car. looking at the recall investigations, i noticed several that referred to stalling and fuel pump problems. the dealer told me that the wiring inside the corroded fuse block contained the wiring to the fuel pump and was not allowing the computer to send the fuel pump the correct messages. perhaps my problem is not unique. i am currently waiting for the new part to come in and will request the old part. thank you. *nm | |||

| 2000 pontiac grand am: at any given time the cars security light comes on after starting the engine, sometimes i notice it is on while driving down the road. other times it comes on before the engine starts and i have to wait 15 minutes as the manual states, very inconvenient especially when you have just finished pumping gas. also i have been having problems with my turn signal clicking while i am going down the road. even when i don't touch my signal it just clicks constantly. the light however doesn't come on while it is doing this. i cant count the number of times this has happened. i did take the car to the dealer for the turn signal sound and they couldn't find anything wrong. *nm | |||

| I was driving along a highway at about 70 mph and the engine just died on me. fortunately, traffic was light and i managed to coast onto a slip road. once i had stopped, i put the car in park and tried to start the engine. the engine wouldn't even turn over. a few minutes later, i tried starting the engine again. this time the engine turned over fine (normal speed) but wouldn't start. i left it another 10 minutes and tried again. this time the engine started fine and i could continue on my way to work. i suspect there is a problem with the security feature (passlock) on my car, as i have had occasional problems starting my car in parking lots when the security light has come on. but this is the first time i've had a problem while driving (at high speed) so of course it could be something else. *nm | |||

| 1. the vehicle has had a gas smell since purchase in 03. i had it into dealership whom said there was no problem. i found out from internet pages this is a common intake seal problem that should have been repaired while under 2 year extended warranty. smell of gas has made persons sick. 2. fan control switch fails and only works on #3 setting or higher. 3. turn indicators fail intermittently. 4. electronics computer fails intermittently and has to be reset by turning the car off and restarting. | I have had constant electrical problems in my vehicle. it started with the turn signals working intermittently, then my power windows would work intermittently, then my sunroof would do so as well. i have had the switch replaced for my turn signals, and they have worked fine since. i had the motor replaced for my sunroof, and it has also worked fine. however, the power windows still work intermittently, and the motor has been replaced 3 times. gee, maybe it isn't the motor?!?!?! i have also had brake rotor wear problems, which almost caused an accident. dealer said rotors looked as if i had been storing my vehicle for years they were so rusted. i urge anyone considering the purchase of a pontiac to re-think their decision. *jb | |||

| I purchased my 2000 pontiac grand am used. i've had it 3 years and have had break problems for at least 2 of the 3 years. my mechanic can not find any reason why i've had so many problems and when i spoke with pontiac headquarters they informed me that since i did not have a documented case through a car dealership there was nothing they could do. i informed them that my private mechanic kept detail records but pontiac informed me that even if i did use a dealership the problems i'm having are part of the normal wear and tear of a vehicle. my breaks have been grinding, squealing, thumping and now the whole front end is creaking. i've gone through several pairs of breaks front and back. i've gotten new rotors, have had the rotors cut. i've gotten new calipers but this still hasn't fixed my problem. at times i feel i am riding in an unsafe vehicle. my car has been looked at one month and less than 30 days later my brakes will be fully worn down. i just don't know how to have the problem corrected. on top of it all, the ignition has been changed, the drivers side seat springs are coming through the seat, the radios volume will go up and down for no reason, i've had to replace the whole turn signal / hazards signal part, the trunk leaks and of course none of it is under warranty. i still have a little over a year left to pay on the vehicle and pontiac could care less. *nm | |||

| On my 2000 grand am the turn signals will work ok for a while then they will stop. at this time the hazard warning switch also will not operate. since this problem was started both fog lights will not come on (both has been checked out twice and can find no problems). now the power door switch on the driver side will work off and on along with the keyless remote (the only way to lock and unlock door is manually). all these problems started about the same time. i noticed there is a recall #03v327000. spoke with gmc today and was told that it would be maybe april before letters would be sent and they were not sure my vehicle would be included. this is the second complaint regarding this vehicle. in 2003 i tried to get rotor replaced while auto was covered under warranty. i had a repair shop tell me it was bad rotor that caused pads to go bad. gmc advised me to take it to a dealer (were purchased it). dealer said no the rotor was ok but the pads were bad which made the rotor go bad. this recall notice was vsg19990282. however because dealer disagreed with repair shop i had to pay for the repairs. i wrote to gmc on april 9, 2003 and never received a reply. *ak | |||

| I purchased my 2000 pontiac grand am used with 27000 miles on july of 2001. in october of 2001 i had my first brake job, february 2002, july 2002, march 2003 brakes checked on 2 other occasions for noise. car was serviced in march 2003 for brakes and alignment - 5 weeks later car caught fire driving in traffic. the smoke was coming from under the hood, the fire dept. and police were on the scene in less than 10 minutes - the car was totaled. cause is under investigation. *jb | |||

| The problem that i am having with my vehicle is that the security light comes on when trying to start the vehicle and will not let me start it. i have two children and am pregnant and was stranded in the middle of a storm because of this problem. after the light comes on, i usually have to wait for 30min.- 1 hr. before it will go off and the vehicle will start. this problem has happened 7 times now in the past 6 months. i have complained several times to the service dealer, and they keep giving me the run around and say nothing is wrong and can't find anything. if nothing is wrong, why does it keep happening?? a friend of mine has the same vehicle and is having the same problem. i think this needs to be looked into and something needs to be done about this! i have children and cannot afford to get stranded.*ak | |||

| Heard loud noise coming from front part tires while driving. i knew it wasn't the brakes. took it to my regular mechanic and was told it was a bad wheel bearing. $400 later it was replaced. this is not my first problem with this car. 1st problem: blower motor went, 2nd: water pump went, 3rd: was told ignition column needs to be replaced, 4th: shoe over timing belt wore away because of water pump problem. there have been numerous other problems including replacement of the brakes. my car only has 53,000 miles on it and was bought brand new in june of 2000. for the money i have spent on it, i could've had a lexus! *jb | |||

| I have bumped the key in the ingition 3 times with my right knee since i have had the car and it shut the car off while driving or stading at a stop light... i am almost 6 foot tall and my seat was adjusted properly. this really caught me by suprise the first time it happend.. i was getting adjusted in my seat at a stop light and my knee must have bumped the key and the car shut off... this happend 2 other times while driving.... i think this could be a very seroius problem. all 3 times i shifted into n and was able to restart the car of coarse the brakes and stering were not power assisted... i had no other keys on my car key ring except the key less remote which would be standard to have on my key for the car. *ak | |||

| My 2000 pontiac grand am gt will, sometimes, not start and when this happens, my security light flashes. after about 10 minutes, the light will stop flashing and then i can start the car. at times, while driving, the car automatically shuts off. i have to pull over and then restart the car. so far i have not had an accident because of this. i have replaced all that has been suggested, battery, ignition switch, and battery cables. i continue to have this problem and have searched other sources on internet. hundreds of other customers have reported having this same problem and one found out it is a security passlock system problem. pontiac dealer in my area said they no longer bypass the security system which is suppose to fix this problem. *tr | |||

| Passlock is preventing car from starting at different times. i feel this is a safety hazard for myself and people that are riding with me. i have paid in aug over total of $600.00 to have this problem correct ed by 2 different shops an low and behold it is happening again. i cannot afford to keep this up and should not have to other cars are having the same issue there should be a recall and i should be refunded what i have paid out. this is a risk to my health and safety i have medical problems and i need my car to start when i need to go someplace and i have a 77 year old father that also depends on me. *tr | |||

| Electrical system:ignition:anti-theft controller about 6 mos. ago i got into my car and it would not start. i was in the parking lot at work, and luckily a man stopped to ask if my security light was lit on the dashboard. (i thought it may be ignition/fuel pump/etc.) sure enough, the security light was flashing. he explained to me that he also drives a gm, and this had been occurring with his car. he said that after researching with the gm dealer, he learned that if a person waited 10 minutes the car would most likely start, which it did. (the anti-theft device actually cuts off the fuel pump, and due to lack of gasoline, the engine won't start.) the next day, i called the pontiac dealer myself, and was told that the problem was most likely the anti-theft controller, and was quoted approx. $500-600 to repair. i have been reading more and more incidents like mine, and frankly don't have the $600 to spend to repair, however, i am very concerned that this defect may leave me stranded somewhere in an unfavorable situation. is there anything you can do to help have this issue looked at as a possible recall, and have the manufacturer fix? thank you for your help. *nm | |||

| Passlock failure. passlock shuts down fuel supply. it is suppose to if the passlock/ignition reports to the computer that the ignition has been tampered with. hundreds of times passlock comes on and i cannot start my car without waiting and doing the 10 minute procedure. happened while i was at a 7-11 one time, some unsavory looking characters same over to me, i flashed my pepper spray and cell phone and said i am calling the police. luckily they ran off. also comes on while i am driving which is extremely dangerous. car would die completely or run ok if not on a hill or incline. happened so many times that the fuel pump needed to be replaced at 50,000 miles. two pontiac dealers suggested new ignition to be installed to see if that will fix it. i will not pay to see if that will fix it. as i research the internet over 17,000 people have had the same problem and reported it to various sites. those are only the people who think of looking on the internet to see if it is a common problem. i did write gm recently to see if they could do something. have not heard back yet. can you help? as i research i have found cars and suv's that have had the same problems since 1999. why hasn't gm discontinued or fixed that passlock issues in all those years? must cost to much have a recall. does someone have to die? hope not. thanks so much for you time and work that goes to helping keep people safe. *jb | |||

| Dt*: the contact stated when the anti-theft controller light illuminated the vehicle failed to start upon the first attempt. after waiting ten minutes and turning the ignition on a second time the vehicle started. the problem occurred intermittently. upon inspection the dealership determined the anti-theft controller sensor needed to be replaced. the consumer stated it would take at least 5 attempts to get the vehicle started. updated 07/03/06. *jb | |||

| Faulty security system; the car will start and run one minute and the next time the car will not start because the anti-theft feature will activate for no apparent reason the only thing the dealership tells me is the same put the key in the ignition turn to acc position wait ten minutes and try to start, and it usually does. i had a friend take his 2002 grand am to the dealership for the same reason and they replaced a chip on his computer and charged him 400.00 dollars which did not fix the problem, and they tell him the same thing put your key in turn to acc position and wait ten minutes , and low and behold the car starts, i could have told him that and not charged him 400.00 dollars. basically no one seems to know how to fix this issue, i was told how to deactivate the anti-theft device by removing two yellow wires and hooking them together the problem with that is the security light stays on all the time, but will always start. this problem is really starting to wear on me and as i said their is a lot of other grand am owners from the 90's to present that have the same problem . g.m doesn't know how to repair the problem, or doesn't care.*jb | |||

| On the day i bought the car i took my family out to dinner. we returned to the car after finishing our dinner and the car would not start. we tried for almost 1/2 hour then called for the road side assistance. they came and picked up the car and we went to the dealership. they told me it was a computer component and the car would be ready the following day. after arguing on how we would get home since the dealership was now closed as was the rental car place they finally agreed to let a porter take us home, the porter had a small car that would only hold 4 people and there were 6 of us. theis meant 2 trips and we lived nearly 30 minutes away. long story short a very dissapointing first day with my new vehicle. within a few months my drivers window would not work or worked when it felt like it. i took it in and they replaced the window regulator. problem solved, then a few months later the window would not work again with the regulator. it worked for almost 2 years then it started up once again and still being under warrenty (gmpp) they took the car in to look at. i left it for a day and returned to be told the window was fine and yes it was working. a few more months go by and the window is not working so i go in again and again it works for them not me. this goes on with me taking the car in and the button works when the tec looks at it then after i leave it does not. i was in town 05/03/2004 and the window went part way down and stuck, i quickly went to rally chevrolet, where all the repair services have been done, and showed them the window would not go up or down. i thought finally this will be taken care of but no i was told taht the warrenty was out and i was over mileage and the cost for the front and rear window would be nearly $1,000.00. i told the service manager that the problem existed before the warrenty ran out and i felt that they should honor that and not charge me. | |||

| I own a 2000 pontiac grand am gt. at about 15,000 miles my blinkers starting either just comming on by theirself or would not work at all. i took it in to the dealer and they replaced the hazard switch. then, about 6 thousand miles later, my front end started shaking and making noise. i took it to the dealer and they said my brakes were down to the rotor and i would need new brakes and rotors. i asked if it would be covered under warranty, and they said the warranty only covered the brakes until 20,000 miles and it would cost me $500 to fix the problem. i took the car to my mechanic and had performace brakes and rotors put on my car for $375 (i had read a few reports of others having problems and having to go back to the dealer every 5-6 thousand miles and did not want to go through that, and concider myself luchy that they lasted as long as they did.). i have put another 15,000 miles on my performace brakes and rotors with no problems. my mechanic also saw that i had a plug in my right front tire. i have never had to take my car in for a flat since i have owned the vehicle, so my guess is that the dealer put the plug in the tire. i have been reading similar complaints from people that own 2001, 2002, and even 2003 grand ams. apparently they are using cheap parts on a performace car and are ignoring the problem and something need to be done, before someones brakes go out completely. there is also a problem with the passengers front seat not locking in place. if you do not push the seat back all the way fairly hard and check the seat lever to make sure that it came back up, the seat will slide all the way fwd during even light breaking. the seat has done this since i have owned the car. if they used better components on their car and would stop cutting corners they would not be having theses problems. *ak | |||

| I contacted general motors about a recall on this vehicle. it has to do with the hazard signal, preventing the turn signals from working correctly. it only works intermittently. they had recalled the 2000 pontiac grand am, which was the car i drive because of this defect. when i called them they told me that the vehicle's was not recalled due to the vin. since this is a defect, and can endanger my life i think they should fix the car for free. i can't afford to get this fixed on my own. as you well know the dealerships charges a lot of money to fix anything on the car. i can't buy a new hazard signal from autozone or o'reiley's auto parts, and just have my friend put it on since the only place one can purchase this particular hazard signal is from the dealership. i wonder why? i am being sarcastic!. there has been no incident/accident as of yet.*ak | |||

| My wife was driving my car to work at 6:30 am on highway. it is a 2000 pontiac grand am with 88,000+ miles. never had a problem like this before. the factory installed cd stopped playing. she reinserted it. it stopped again. she glanced in her rear view mirror to see what appeared to be a silvery glow at the rear passenger side speaker. then a fire from the speaker. by the time the car was able to stop along side the highway, the flames filled the whole rear window. she tried to open the door, it remained locked. she tried to open the driver window, it would not release. the flames were now over head and along the passenger seat . she shut the car off, pulled out the key and the door finally opened. she got out of there, opened the back door and got out her purse on the floor. she beat it down the highway. she looked back and could see flames now under the car and the inside completely burning. two trucks had stopped and the guys had fire extinguishers to put out the fire. then the fire truck and police arrived. the fire was completely doused out. the only thing not burnt was the front end and the engine. she came seconds from losing her life. national will treat this as a total write off but i almost lost my wife (it could have been me that day). have you ever heard of anything so freaky? a speaker on fire?*jb | |||

| My car has electrical problems. it started two weeks after i purchased my 2000 grand am brand new. it started with the check engine soon like coming on and giving a code that i was running the car with the fuel cap off. after the third time they realized it is an error. then the doors started locking theirselves. i have had 3 stereos installed, all having electronic problems and now my airbag light keeps coming on randomly and not giving a code when hooked up to read it. no one can give me a straight answer. i have been into the dealer so many times. i have now had the car 2 1/2 years. the warranty will be off soon and they still cannot fix or even explain my problems. ts | |||

| On 4/27/2005 i replaced the combination switch on my 2000 grand am, because it was making a clicking noise for about 2 weeks, when the turn signal wasn`t on and i noticed some smoke coming from the steering column. a week later i received a recall notice on the switch. gm`s consumer services sent me a form to fill out for a refund. i sumitted the forms and my claim was refused because the recall was performed on 4/26/2004. i checked my records and they did replace the switch 1 year earlier. my concern is that gm was replaceing bad with bad. my service request # 1-348061917. customer relationship manager; krystal keel. | |||

| My car has been in the shop repeatedly for the brakes grinding and shaking when i brake. the rotors have been replaced twice for rusting and warping and the brakes once, under warranty. i have had water leaks, my dash has been replaced for warping, 2 door panels have been replaced for warping. i have 2 more that need to be replaced, but the dealership says it's a common problem, but it's not covered under the extended warranty. i have lots of wind noise. a rotten egg smell in my car when driving it. i took my car to the dealer last week and they replaced a gasket/seal for a intake gasket leak. i went to pick up my car and it reeked of gasoline. they kept it another day and had to replace my fuel regulator. now i cannot keep my windows closed because there is a odor of gas in my car, which causes my eyes to burn and water and my throat to burn. my hazards/blinkers have gone out once already. two other times i had it in the shop for a clicking noise in my dash area and it was something with my hazards that had to be replaced. my passenger seat would not adjust, they say they fixed it? the transmission slips on occasion and that has been since i took possession of the lemon. my horn quit working and was finally fixed after repeatedly taking it into the dealer. it is hesitant to start at times and when it finally starts the front end shakes, like the motor mounts are bad. *jb | |||
