I have a 2002 pontiac grand am that has a defective turn signal relay, or emergency flasher. sometimes the signal will work, sometimes not, which is pretty dangerous when driving on the freeway. i have researched this issue on the internet, and see that gm is aware of this problem with their vehicles. i called the 1-800-620-7668 and was told no recalls were on my car. it is a safety hazard.

I purchased my 2002 used with 73k miles 12/09. after approximately 4k miles just driving to and from work i took an 800 mi road trip. when the car got up to running temperature in humidity the turn signals didn't function. i stopped and checked to make sure there weren't any blown bulbs or fuses, but there weren't any. after letting the grand am cool down, i went back on the road. again, the signals didn't work. i was careful and didn't have any accidents, but this issue is causing great concern, and i don't want to cause anything. there has been a tsb 034-327 that is for the same multifunction switch. why didn't this tsb cover the switch for the 2002 grand am?

Why aren't 2002 pontiac grand am's included in the multifunction switch recall 03v-327? it is the same malfunctioning part so it should require the manufacturer's to cover the cost of replacement and labor. *tr

On february 23, 2009, i purchased a black 2002 pontiac grand am gt sedan, from log cabin auto located in murphy north carolina (cherokee county). i paid in full exactly 4,011 dollars to the car sales men, mark kissel. the second day i had the car i had to change a 0 2 censor. one week after i had made the purchase, the left and right blinker signals failed to operate. when the first initial incident occurred, i returned back to the dealer. when i got there the signals had resumed their proper function. i often have to turn my emergency blinkers on to get my signals to operate. until this day they do not always work. the following week, i am driving in the pouring rain with my infant child in the back seat, when my wind shield wipers failed to work. week after week something defaults on this vehicle. by this point i'm getting suspicious about the validity of the vehicle. so i return to the car lot and ask for all my paperwork, and a car fax report. at the time, he could not furnish any paper work. so i go to a certified gm motor dealership, also located here in murphy north carolina, and have them to provide me with a car fax report. this is when i found out the vehicle had been wrecked; also it had failed an emissions safety inspection and has fraudulent mileage. on 05/10/2002 the mileage registered as having 17 miles, 06/11/2002 it had 1,016, 05/22/2003 it had 108,190, 10/22/2008 it had 85,000, when i paid for the car, i signed a legal document stating that i agreed to purchase the vehicle with the knowledge that it had 84,156 miles on it. finally, after a week of waiting he furnishes me with all the copies. my brakes have completely gone out, my catalytic convertors and exhaust system needs to be replaced. tonight on 04/28/2009, my rear lights completely burnt out and my sunroof flew off the car and shattered onto the highway. i'm a struggling college student, was an orphan of the state (north carolina, until i aged out of foster care) and i am single mother. *tr

I recently purchased a used 2002 pontiac grand am se. within a few days of purchase, it began to experience turn signal/hazard problems. the turn signal and/or hazard lights will work sometimes and then other times they will not work at all. sometimes, it will start working when you first start driving and then stop working while you are driving and will also start with them not working when you start driving and then start working later, all without restarting the vehicle. also, the turn signal will make clicking noises when not in use. this is very dangerous because people do not know when i am turning and i have had a few close calls with other vehicles!!!! *tr

I have a 2002 grand am. it has been giving me problems with the turn signals. unlike the recall, the signals are still working, they just click rapidly when they are not in use. the noise lasts for a long time. i replaced the flasher/switch unit and the problem persists. randomly, the flasher relay will click and then stop and start again. when it is clicking, no lights flash (either turn or hazard) but if i engage hazards or turn signal, they operate normally. once turned off, the clicking will randomly continue. *tr

I have a 2002 grand am gt. i drove it off the lot new with 34 miles on it. i have had nothing but problems with this vehicle. the low oil sensor has been replaced 3 times. the gasket intake valves were leaking causing my lifters to melt together. i had to have the lifters replaced in the engine at 70,000 miles. being that my salesman worked with me, all i had to pay was the cost of labor. that was still $1000. at 81,000 i had to have a new catalytic converter put in. one year later i have been told that i need another new catalytic converter. i have also had trouble with the blinkers and brake lights as others have written. my security light has also just started coming on. i have had nothing but gm vehicles up to this point, as have the rest of my family. i even had family that worked for gm. i had a grand prix before this, and it was great. however, i will never, ever, buy another gm vehicle for as long as i live. they do not produce a product that they will stand behind. no wonder they need a bailout! *tr

10/22/2008750001
During my daily drive to and from work my turn signal and hazard lights started to work intermittently on my 2002 pontiac grand am gt. one minute the turn signal would work great and the next second it would stop. this occurred infrequently at first, but got progressively worse. two weeks after the problem started, the turn signal and hazard lights stopped working altogether. turn signals are an essential part of driving to safely indicate to other drivers that you need to enter another lane or are making a specific turn. without my blinkers i almost got into several wrecks because i needed to switch lanes, but was unable to indicate this to other drivers during heavy traffic times. if i had broken down i wouldn't have my hazard lights to indicate to other drivers that i was stranded. after reading several web posts i determined that the switch that controls the turn signals and hazard lights was the problem. i replaced the part for $40 at the dealership and my blinkers and hazards have been working fine since. i was surprised to see the number of people that had the same problem on the internet. i also found out that the switch i replaced was actually recalled on earlier models of my car. the recall for this switch should be expanded to include the 2002 model. *tr

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt and i received a letter from gm about the signals not working properly to contact the dealer and they would fix it but when i called they said they don't know anything about it and no letters went out so here i am a few years later and my signals still don't work all the time. *tr

My 2002 grand am has a clicking sound coming from the dashboard. i took it to greenfield pontiac after hearing about a service bulletin. they told me the bulletin did not cover the problem i had and that since it did not create a safety hazard, it was not covered. the cost to me would be about $300 for a new 'multifunction switch' which is the blinker/directional arm. my turn signals do function properly when i need to use them, and as far as i know the lights are not actually flashing. the clicking is not constant, or everyday, but when it gets going, sometimes it does not stop for 10 to 20 minutes. i think i'm going deaf from turning the radio up so i don't have to hear the clicking. i've had several other bad experiences with this vehicle that were not covered (i.e. timing went at 40,000 mi--big bill!). i will never buy another gm product--they do not stand behind their vehicles! *tr

I took my car to marc miller pontiac to have the turn signals fixed. the emergency flasher on the dash kept clicking and the turn signals would work periodically. the turn signals finally went out. the incident i am referring to is gm service bulletin 04098a. i can't understand if this applies to my 2002 pontiac grand am. i was charged for this a total of $314.17 and am not sure if it was a recall. *tr

I own a 2002 pontiac grand am and the turn signals will all of a sudden stop working, creating a hazardous driving situation. from what i've read of others complaints, this was recognized as a problem by gm in 2001 however a recall was not issued. i was told by the dealership this would cost me about $500 to repair and i've not been able to afford to do so. i think gm should fix this problem with no charge to me since so many others have complained of this problem also. *tr

I own a 2002 pontiac grand am gt and the turn signal indicators will randomly stop working. the first time this happened was on 5/20/08. the indicator arrows inside the car were not going off when i tried to signal. luckily i was able to pull over and exam the exterior lights only to find that no signal lights outside my car worked either. this problem now occurs every couple of days and i find it very dangerous on busy roads. i feel it could lead to a preventable traffic accident. through research i have found that this is a common complaint from fellow pontiac owners. i also found that a recall investigation was filed back in sept. of 2005 (#pe05055) but was closed in jan. of 2006 with no recalls being issued. i have contacted my mechanic and it is going to cost me around $300 to fix this. i am upset that this same malfunction was recalled in the 2001 grand am models (03v327000) but will not be fixed for my 2002. when is gm going to take ownership of it's manufacturing errors?? *tr

Turn signals and flashers do not work intermittently. they don't work more often then they do. the dealership could not duplicate (don't think they really tried) i am concerned that when i really need the hazard flashers they wont work, it is dangerous to not use blinkers and hand signals are harder to see. *jb

05/03/20071
For several months the vehicle has emitted a clicking noise from the central dash area that has become more frequent. it is usually triggered by using the turn signal - once the turn signal stops, the clicking noise continues for varying amounts of time. the dealer said it is not related to the service advisory on the hazard flasher, but that it is the wiring to multi-function switch in the steering column shorting out. from internet searches this sounds like a fairly common problem and a short sounds like a potential fire hazard. should there be a recall or at least a warranty extension on this failure mode? the repair cost will be about $350 at the dealer. *jb

Our 2002 pontiac grand am also developed the annoying clicking noise that sounded as if the blinkers were on when they were not. this is a known issue with the multi-function turn signal switch supplied to gm by trw. how do i know this? a good friend of mine is employed with trw as the quality engineer on the p90 line and informed me of a design change to the switch during the 2002 model year. he supplied me with a replacement switch that corrected the issue. when will/is gm going to step up to the plate and acknowledge this issue and recall all affected vehicles? *jb

I purchased my 2002 grand am used in july 2005 with 25,000 miles on it. have since replaced the timing and everything that goes along with that ($2000+) and we are trying to get some of that money back from gm as we are aware there was a service bulletin that had something to do with what happened. now... i had received a recall regarding the blinkers about an issue where they stop working. the issue i'm having, of course, is not covered by the recall. in december, i began hearing a clicking sound coming from the dash which sounded like the blinker was flashing. the blinkers are not flashing but it sounds like they are. they do seem to be working fine when i am actually trying to use them. doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes it clicks just a few times and stops, sometimes it clicks alot to the point where i just turn the radio up so i can't hear the clicking. the dealer told me this would cost $300 to replace the whole arm--which apparently involves removing the steering column. luckily, i know a mechanic who will do this repair for the cost of the arm. what is the problem with gm and these grand ams? they sure don't stand behind their product! i love my car, but this is getting ridiculous...to the point that i'm tempted to buy a foreign car next time! *nm

Your recall of 2000-2001 pontiac grandams (03v327000) states that if the turn signals/hazard flashers become inoperative it could result in a crash. now pontiac sends me a letter letting me know that my 2002 grandam could have a problem with the turn signals/hazard flashers that could allow them to fail. with a little logic - if it is dangerous for a 2000-2001 then it also dangerous for a 2002 and there should be a recall! *jb

After using the turn signal, i noticed there was a clicking noise still coming from under the dash for a few minutes after the signal was turned off. this happens every time i use the turn signal and the latest incident resulted in smoke in the cabin but no fire. after doing much research, i see this is an ongoing issue with this vehicle, as with previous years. why is there no recall or tsb issued for this item, seeing as though this results in turn signal failure, and can even cause a fire. *nm

I have been having trouble with my turn signals on my 2002 pontiac grand am. when i use my signals, after it clicks off, it still clicks and on 2 occasions there was smoke that came out of my steering wheel. my husband and i have brought the car to the dealership on a separate occasion, and after explaining what was wrong with the car (that is still under gm warranty) they told us that we still had to pay for a diagnostic test. i know of at least 3 other people with the same year and model car as i and they have had the same problem. i was informed from my mechanic that if the wiring work is not done soon, there will most definitely be a fire. i don't feel that i as a consumer and with it still being under warranty, should have to pay out of my pocket for repairs that are clearly the manufacturer's fault. this defect risks the lives of my children as well as myself and anyone else who rides in my vehicle.*jb

Turn signal switch appears to be failing - something gm addressed on earlier model vehicles and across a wide range of gm vehicles. turn signal switch appears to continue to operate even after the turn signal is returned to it's off position. clicking is random and usually very fast - likely the result of current arcing given earlier recalls regarding the turn signal and hazzard light switch. gm has issued a recall for this on earlier vehicles. often referred to by owners as nervous blinker syndrome. dealer plans to charge $250 to fix despite recalls on earlier models.

The multi-function switch on my 2002 pontiac grand am failed in november 2005. the turn signals would not always work, the indicator for the hazard lights would come on in the car and there was a constant clicking noise. i had the switch replaced at a cost of $323 because the dealer told me that eventually both the turn signals and hazard switch would become inoperable. i received a service notice in april, 2006 (#04098) which indicated that the repair would be covered. however, only the hazard switch replacement is covered, not the replacement of the multi function switch. so, even though the failure of the multi function switch caused the same dangerous situation of turn signal/hazard light failure, gm is opting not to cover the cost. does this make sense to you? *nm

The turn signal clicks as if it is on (but at a faster-than-normal speed) when it is off. the lights do not flash. i have already had the switch replaced through the recall because the signals would intermittently stop working. i had my repairman (not the dealership) look at it, and he didn't know what the problem was, so he called his friend at a gm dealership. the friend said that this problem is very common on these cars. today, the steering column started smoking, so i took it to the dealership. i googled pontiac grand am turn signal, and there were a lot of people who were having this same problem with the grand am. *tr

I just bought my 2002 grand am used from a dealership. since then it has been giving me problems with the turn signals. unlike the recall, the signals are still working, they just click rapidly when they are not in use. the noise lasts for a long time. *tr

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am gt and the turn signal indicators work at random, they work for awhile and then just stop working for awhile. no turn signal lights outside the car and no indicator arrows inside the car. then, they begin to work again but only for a awhile. *jb

In high humidity (raining) or high temps and high humidity, the turn signals stop working. in cold temps, the directional 'click' occurs sporadically when the directional are not turned on. this problem has been occurring over the last 2 years, but isn't consistent enough to bring into the shop for repair. (they can't do anything if the problem isn't happening at that time). *jb

We purchase a 2002 pontiac grand am se in july of 2005 from champion chevrolet in brighton michigan, we had it in to dealer within the first few weeks of owning it, which they didn't repair that day because what needed to be done would take to long so it was taken in the following sat. had the abs, trac control and the service engine soon sensor was replaced and there was a noise under the front drivers side which was fixed but came back a week later they told us that the noise was normal, i don't believe this as none of our other cars make this noise not even our chevy pickup truck. we also had it back in again for the sensors for the abs, trac control and the service engine light that keeps coming on. we cont'd to have this problem and still don't have it fixed. when the lights come on i don't have my abs brakes anymore and no trac control. my blinkers also have been giving me a problem as sometimes they work and other times they don't. most of the time i can get them to work if i put my hazard lights on for a few mins. but i should not have to. i have been a gm person all my life as my dad has worked for gm for 35 something yrs. but they need to fixs these problems as it is unsafe for me, my children, my husband or whoever else maybe in the car and the other drivers on the road especially here in michigan with snowy and icy roads. i also have read some of the other complaints here and it seems that there are a lot of other people having the same problems. i was also told today while getting my oil change done that there is a problem with the dexcool in this car too. i did look around on the net and notice that there seems to be a lot of people having this problem. i have not had this problem yet as i only have 50,000 miles on my car but some of the signs that people are talking about i have notice so it will go into a dealer to have it checked and i will be keeping my invoices as i hope gm does the right thing and takes care of this problem to. *nm

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am in which the blinker continues to blink after it ois turned off. the dash doesn't light up, however the blinking sound is a very fast continuous blink and i took it to the dealer to get fixed and they were going to charge me $500 to fix it. they also informed me that this was a recall on previous models, and there was no recall yet for the 2002 model. *nm

*jb

I have a 2002 pontiac grand am. i am having problems with the turn signal switch. the blinker switch keeps clicking after i turn. it is aggravating to me and i have read of a lot of 2002 grand am owners having the same problem. i took it into the shop to see about getting fixed but it will cost me over $400. this is ridiculous and something should be done about this. also, i have had to have the catalytic converter replaced. i wish i would have never bought this vehicle. *jb

2002 pontiac grand am. frequent engagement of the turn signal relay from simply moving the steering wheel. we received a recall notice related to the turn signal, but pontiac has no record of our car qualifying for the recall. multi function switch replaced. total cost of repair $360. research on the internet indicated several of these issues. *jb

Complained 2 years ago about turn signal clicking noise in dash when not engaged. received letter from pontiac april 2006 to have signal/hazard warning flashers replaced. took to jack wolf pontiac and was told by craig wegner, service manager it was also the hazard switch and the multi-function switch causing problem. these are not covered and would cost me $474.00 to replace. cannot stand constant clicking noise any longer. please look into this matter. *jb

I own a 2002 pontiac grand am. i am having problems with the turn signals. it started with the turn signals working intermittently. now the problem has progressed to the turn signals continuing to click even when they are not in use. i know the 2000 and 2001 grand ams were recalled for this same problem. why aren't the 2002s have the same thing done. my problem has not been fixed yet but plan on having it done soon if there is a potential for a fire. *jb

2002 pontiac grand am gt ticking noise in the dash. however, source is the multi-switch unit in steering column. dealer and gm does not identify problem, but will charge for replacing unit. recalled for 1999-2001...not fixed or updated for 2002. *nm

I had to have the multi-function switch on my 2002 pontiac grand am replaced at a cost of $323.00. the switch kept clicking, even when the turn signals and hazard lights were not in use. i was told that the switch would ultimately fail, leaving me with no turn signal or hazard light function. this was a recall item on both the 2000 and 2001 grand ams. obviously, the problem was not solved in the 2002 model, but since that model year is not part of the recall, i had to pay for the repair out of my own pocket. does this seem right to you?. *nm

Dt: the contact reported that the turn signal was making a clicking sound when the turn signal was not being used. the local mechanic told the contact that the turn signal could be a fire hazard. the vehicle is a 2002 , pontiac grand am. the contact had the problem repaired. general motors was called, and they said that if there was a recall they would reimburse the contact. this has been a problem for a year, and intermittently. *ak
