Coolant leaked into engine caused problems, wouldn't start half the time, couldn't fill up without gas pump cutting off constantly (took 20 minutes to fill up). took car to dealer and other shops spent tons of money problem not solved. got so feed up with this car i pulled the tags and bought a honda. it is really unfair how the manufacturer of this car was allowed to get away with putting out such an inferior product. there should have been a major recall on any number of these problems. i was never notified of any recalls or the class action law suit.

Hi, my grandam overheated while i was driving. i noticed that the coolant compartment was empty. i did not receive a low coolant warning from the car system. i had topped off my coolant compartment about two months ago. when i look at the engine block, i can see that there is a trail of coolant coming out the engine gasket. i did some googling and noticed that this is a common problem with the grandams and that there was a class action lawsuit filed against gm a couple years ago. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle as i worry if the engine will catch fire. *tr

I have a 2003 grand am gt, seen others had intake manifold issues too, heard there was a recall on 2002 but not 2003, looking if there is a recall on it, if so how do i go about fixing it, because i already paid $600 to get it fixed because i had to, the grand am is our main car to transport both children places. also, the accelerator issues...i have yet to get a email, or letter or anything for that matter about any of the recalls on this veh...do they pick and choose who they send them to or what? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 pontiac grand am. while driving approximately 35 mph, the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for inspection, but they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on four separate occasions for the identical failure, but there were no resolutions. the failures occurred intermittently. the vehicle owner's manual specified a defect with the pass lock and anti-theft device system, which could result in unexpected stalling. there were no injuries, but the driver stated that this was a life threatening situation. the failure mileage was 27,000 and current mileage was 28,300.

I have a 2003 pontiac gran am gt ram air four door sedan. several weeks we experienced a problem where the car would suddenly accelerate without the gas pedal being depressed, the car would continue to accelerate until the gas pedal was quickly depressed or i hit the brakes. i took the car to my repair shop and they replaced a cable. the problem ended than a few weeks later reappeared. i took the car to a pontiac dealer (adams/annapolis) and they cleaned out some connections, but the problem returned shortly after this. i returned the car to adams and they replace the computer. this appeared to end the problem but i experienced the same problem once yesterday but it has not reoccurred since. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 pontiac grand am. when the contact took his vehicle to the dealer for routine maintenance on july 27, 2007, a technician informed him that the intake manifold gasket failed. the technician stated that the failure was caused by two different types of metal that were used on the head and intake manifolds. when heated, both metals expanded at different rates and caused the gasket to fail. the manufacturer admitted that the failure was directly related to a design defect. there is a remedy for the failure, but the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. an authorized dealer repaired the vehicle on may 5, 2008. the failure mileage was 24,691 and current mileage was 30,826. updated 06/17/08. *lj

I was driving approx. 70 mph on the highway in my 2003 grand am gt when all of a sudden, with no warning at all, my car shut off completely!!!! the steering wheel locked up, the brakes felt very hard to push, and the car almost came to an immediate stop. the only thing that didn't stop working was the radio. i started the car after five minutes and it started right up as if nothing had happened. the same thing happened to me again, about 4 months later. i was driving about 35 miles an hour when all of a sudden the car shut off with absolutely no warning what-so-ever!!!!! the car started after a few minutes but the service vehicle soon and trac off lights came on. the next morning we started the car and the lights on the dash didn't come on. my husband drove the car that morning and it cut off on him while driving about 45 mph on telegraph. he started the car after waiting about 5 minutes and it started without a problem. we paid belle tire to hook up the diagnostic machine to the car to see if they could detect the problem. they said something showed up that had to do with the abs sensor. we had that fixed and thought it had solved the problem. unfortunately it didn't.....the car shut off again!!! it happened about 10 months later (which was just a couple weeks ago). i was at a light, turned right and about 3 seconds after i turned, the car shut off again with no warning!!!! i waited a couple minutes, started the vehicle and it started right away. the service vehicle soon light and the trac off light stayed on while i drove about 20 minutes to my house. i parked the car for about 10 minutes, started it up and the dash lights went out. everything seemed fine, as if nothing had happened. there's a little over 59,000 miles on the odometer. less then two weeks later, just yesterday 11/27/06, i was turning onto jefferson in detroit, when the same thing happened again. *nm

There were problems with the battery, ignition switch, wiring. *mr the computer was replaced, a battery was installed, wiring was tightened, a key ignition was added, and the switch lights/dash component(problem not specified). when the brakes were applied at a speed of 40 mph, the lights would act erratic along with the rpm going down. the rpm and light problem would occur almost everyday and sometime the vehicle would shut down. the consumer no longer operates the vehicle and requested either a new vehicle or a refund.  This didn't involve anything tragic. i have a 2003 pontiac grandam and it was having problems with leaking coolant and i have found out that my intake manifold gasket is needing to be replaced and also learned from the mechanic that i took it to that this model of car is infamous for having that problem and his does several repairs of the same type of car for the same problems every month and i think this should be addressed by the gm manufacturers because they put a faulty part on this type of car and it is going bad and could subsequently cause the head gaskets to blow on the car if it is not repaired and also i am having problems with the accelerator and when i called about a recall they told me that for my vin on my car their was currently no recalls which is a bunch of bull because my car is also having that problem my accelerator is sticking and the car keeps going even when i am not pushing the gas pedal and it is really scary sometimes but it doesn't do it every time i start the car its just unpredictable and happens out of the blue. *tr

We went in for a routine oil change, when the mechanic advised that there was antifreeze in the oil. the intake gasket was leaking. our car only has 70,000 miles on it. mutual friends of ours, also had the same problem with previous grand ams around the same mileage. *tr

Pontiac gram am 2003, now has 75,000 miles. low coolant light turned on. contacted dealership and was told to add manufacturer brand coolant. a week later low coolant came back on and added more coolant. took into shop for repair and was told that coolant was leaking into the engine manifold and will need to be replaced. cost of the repair $1,250.00. they told me that seal gasket was worn out and caused the leak in to the engine and it happens when car reach a higher mileage. i believe this is a design flaw and should have been corrected from the year 2000 models. this same problem caused my other car pontiac grand am 2000 to die out at 80,000 miles and only that time the warning was engine light came on before the car died and would not start again. i don't see this type of a problem with other car manufacturer even if the car reach mileage 60,000 - 80,000 miles. *jb

We purchased a 2003 grand am from gunn pontiac in san antonio in august 2003. within a month the car would stall out at stops or during turns. we brought the car in twice to the dealership and was told that they couldn't duplicate the problem. the car has done this for the last 11 months on and off. in july 2004 the slave cylinder went out and i was told that it would be 1200.00 to repair it. the service consultant told me the 2 problems could be related because he had never seen this part go out at 40,000 miles and that the cylinder should last much much longer. once the car was repaired i was then told that the dealership would not help us w the repairs. i talked to the service manager , who basically called me a liar about the problem w the car stalling and that i would have to take this problem up w pontiac national reps. after 2 and a half weeks of no answers from them we went and picked up the car on friday(8/20/04). tonight the car stalled out 4 times on a drive. i an discussed w pontiac and their lack of service!!*jb

Purchased 2003 pontiac grand am se1 with 3.4 liter 3400 sfi v-6 engine on 7/30/03.n 8/27/03, 2624 miles on vehicle. experienced major problem of car died out and stalled while driving was able to restart auto which would died out and stalled 6 separate times this occurred while driving and ranged from 15 seconds to 2 mins of driving time and at speeds of 5 to 35 mph. ( the vehicle just quit running with no warning!) had vehicle towed to dealership. dealer service advisor (joe) advise me that at the repair bays they experienced/duplicated the problem 9 times, but had no idea what was causing the problem. stated they had calls into general motors technical support and were waiting for some possile answers/solutions. i am reporting this of two reasons 1. this is a major safety problem. the vehicle dies/stalls out at the wrong time and place an accident will happen. 2. i am with out a vehicle which i purchased in good faith.
