The rear cradle bolts pulled through the retainers. car was at a stop at the time. since this happened the car lost it's steering ability. good thing i was stopped at a stop sign. egine was still running.

I was driving down a main road (speed limit 55 mph) when my steering went completely out, the steering wheel spun in either direction without stopping w/no action at tires. luckily i was able to brake and maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder. upon further investigation i realized the only reason i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder by pressing the brakes is because the drivers side rear cradle bolt on the drivers side was missing which caused the engine and entire front end to drop and twist to the right when the brake was applied. there are many vehicle traffic deaths on this road every year and luckily i wasn't another statistic. my reason behind this complaint is i have noticed that the nhtsa has issued a recall on this problem (campaign #00v189000). upon learning this i took the vehicle up to the dealer to remedy the problem and was informed that the vehicle did not fall under the recall because the vin # is one number off (i.e. pontiac issued the recall for vins up to mf23 and my vin is mf24). this information is located on gm's document, id# 792186. my complaint is this: the problem has occurred to my car, i live in michigan, it's a 1991, i could have lost my life and i feel it's all attributed to poor engineering on gm's behalf, they have recognized that, but for the sake of saving money, my vehicle (one number off on the vin), was not included on the recall, yet the problem still exists. the service department was very combative when addressing my problem and not very concerned, even though it could of been one of their wives or daughters i crashed head on into because of poor engineering and an obvious problem that was not completely addressed in all grand prixs that were manufactured in 1991 and registered in the state of michigan. *tr

My 1991 pontiac grand prix has exhibited the same exact issues described by nhtsa campaign 00v189000. the bolts that hold the back end of the motor cradle corroded through and the engine fell as described in the description of gm campaign 00061, including the steering shaft separating so that the car became . the vin of my vehicle places it as about 4000 units after the end of the recall. *jb

While in motion, the steering wheel snapped and consumer no longer had control of the vehicle because the engine was laying on the ground. since the incident, consumer received a recall notice regarding the front frame/cradle bolts corroding. vehicle was towed to dealership to be inspected for the recall. dealer informed consumer the bolts were not the problem it was the whole cradle itself which corroded and caused the engine to fall out and the steering to snap. it was then determined that the failure was not covered under the recall. *jg

While turning into an alley, the bolts broke holding cradle under engine. engine dropped down and pulled out steering shaft. resulted in no steering and engine almost laying on street. was a recall in 97 and 2000, due to corrosion of rings and retainer. corrosion being linked to salt on roads. no warning this was a problem. my grand prix 1991 has only 70,000 miles on it and kept in garage. pontiac said my car isnt included in recall due to vin number. towed to pontiac dealership and was told parts could only be ordered through dealer. parts $1,300. labor-total $1,600 plus tax. told them to forget it unless recall would cover it, of course it wouldn't. towed to another garage. they are replacing front and rear bolts and fixing problem it caused to the steering. $500 total. *jb
