Early monday morning got into car as normal to go to work, turned the key to start and immediatly there was a loud thump then smoke started pouring out of hood area, i opened the hood and the engine was engulfed in flames, the noise was so loud it woke my family in which they called the fire department by then i had already ran to my boat to retrieve my fire extinguisher to put the fire out, luckily i had the extinguisher and was able to cancel fire department call and put the fire out by myself, now i am awaiting estimate from mechanic to see if engine can be salvaged or if it is a total loss

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 pontiac grand prix. within two weeks of purchasing the vehicle, the brake line failed. the contact pulled into her driveway and noticed that she was no longer able to brake. she took the vehicle back to the sales dealer and they repaired the failure, although she noticed in march of 2009 that the battery failed. the contact purchased another battery. the same day, the fuel pump and fuel filter malfunctioned, which the contact noticed when the vehicle was shut off. the contact had the failures replaced, but the vehicle still would not remain on. she had not taken the vehicle to the dealer or spoken with the manufacturer. the current mileage was approximately 135,700 and failure mileage was 135,533.

Was driving home from a trip, and shortly after filling my car up with gas, i heard a 'bang', and the engine bay burst into flames. after this happened, i pulled over, and by the time i actually stopped the car, the fire was already entering the inside of the car. by the time i exited the car, the front half was completely on fire. by the time i walked around 100 feet away from the car, the entire car was engulfed in the fire. so far it is uncertain what actually caused the fire, and it is currently being investigated by my insurance company. there was nothing that could be done to correct the failure, as the car was a total loss. i am very upset that this happened, and if my kids would have been in the car at the time of the fire, i may not have been able to get them out of the car in time. the fire spread very, very fast... i've never seen anything like it. prior to this incident, the car was trouble free, and this came as a complete surprise. i am even more upset now, because i found out that i'm not the only one who has had this problem with their pontiac grand prix gtp, infact, there are a lot of reports identical to my own. general motors really needs to step up and do something about this. this is a major safety hazard, and could easily get someone killed. *tr

After running for a period of time vehicle will not restart; happened 3 different times in hot weather in past 4 months and will restart after sevearl hours on it's own. pontiac dealers cannot recreate problem therefore, will not check why no fuel is getting to injectors. when roadside assist came they checked injections and was getting no fuel towed three times. i paid to check fuel lines and change fuel filter and battery which fuel filter did not have to be changed. nor did the battery need to be changed. *ak

For several weeks, the steering in my 99 pontiac grand prix has been failling while turning left at low speeds. suprise, suprise!! today, 7/13/03 i hit another vehicle while pulling into a car wash when i lost left turn power steering and could not avoid his car. i was turning off of a busy street and was almost rear ended as well. i am very angry, as this is the 5th time i was almost killed in my 1999 grand prix. the first 4 times were on the highway, when my car lost total engine power with no warning. after 6 weeks of having it in and out of a certified gm repair shop, and having a complete fuel system overhaul, the gm mechanic tore down everything under the hood to find that the fuel system sensor had never been attatched. please advise on any legal action against gm that may me of benefit to me, as well as how to demand a recall on the 99 pontiac grand prix.*ak
