2004 pontiac grand prix transmission slipping/jerking motion going from dead start or uphill/downhill. seems very very dangerous as trying to pull out into traffic is never consistent and the jerking motion forces people behind to slam on brakes. happens up to 3 times in a row. this is a very dangerous issue and something needs to be done about this i do not want to be driving in danger like this anymore.

The spout where you put oil into the engine is directly over the manifold, when driving the oil low light came on so when putting oil into the engine some dripped down onto the manifold caught fire it is the 3800 v6 series non supercharged, after speaking to a local dealer ship most models have a spout that when oil is spilled it directs it over the manifold. my vehicle did not have one luckily my vehicle was saved

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 pontiac grand prix. the contact was traveling 35 mph when the car stalled. when the hood was opened the contact found that the spark plugs, a plastic guard on top of the engine and the tube to add oil were all burned and melted together. the mechanic informed the caller that there was a recall for under the hood fires on the 2003 model year, but not for the 2004. there is a recall for this under campaign number 08v118000, which deals with engine and engine cooling. the mileage was not available at the time of the complaint.rl

I have 2004 pontiac grand prix with a 3800 series 3 engine. i had to get my intake gaskets and my valve covers replaced. ive been told that this a is a common issue regarding this engine so i wanted to report it. maybe it will be a recall someday like the 2003 and older models. this could have potentially been a serious fire and is a serious fire issue.

Passenger cabin blower motor inoperative or intermittent, blower speed may drop or blower continues to run after key off. i feel this may lead to a fire. repair bulletin can be found at http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/advautoca/2008-12-10_042534_blower_motor.pdf some customers may comment on an inoperative or impenitent heating, ventilation and air conditioning (bv ac) blower motor. others may comment that the blower motor speed may momentarily drop or that the blower motor continues to run after the key is turned off cause this condition may be caused by a voltage spike from the wiper motor. the voltage spike may cause a logic lock up in the blower motor control module that may be either momentary or pennanent. technicians are to install a capacitor, pin 25073556, at the blower motor control module connector using the following procedure: i. disconnect the negative cable from the battery. 2. remove the right closeoutlinsulator panel. refer to the closeoutllnsulator panel replacement-right procedure in the instrument panel, gauges and console section of sl 3. disconnect the wire harness connector to the blower motor control module. 4. install a capacitor, pin 25073556, into the blower motor control module connector using the following steps. refer to the illustration above to locate the positive and negative leads of the capacitor. strip a short length of insulation from the red wire in cavity c, circuit 442, of the blower motor control module connector using a splice clip from the j-38125 terminal repair kit, crimp the positive lead of the capacitor to the red wire. strip a short length of insulation from the black wire in cavity a of the blower motor control module connector the circuit number for buick vehicles is 1450 and for pontiac vehicles it is 150. using a splice clip from the j-38125 terminal repair kit, crimp the negative lead of the capacitor to the black wire. why should consumers pay for this defect??????? *tr

On july 7 2009 i was driving my 2004 pontiac grand prix gtp. through out the day the car seem fine, i even washed it. i took my friend home and came directly right back home. a little while after flames were coming from under my hood. i immediately call 91 and about 10 minutes later they came and put it out. *tr

I bought a 2004 pontiac grand prix gt2 and i have had a =few problems with it that appear to be quite common the problems are below *go through 1quart of oil approx every 1000 miles *trouble starting when it has already been warmed up. ie after i drive around town and go into a store i come out and try to start and it dies right away. it can take up to 6 tries to get it started. i usually have to press the gas to get it going. *headlamps bounce *blower motor keeps blowing even when the car is shut off. after research i have noticed that these problems are all very common in the 2004 pontiac grand prix. i do not think its right that pontiac has not taken responsibility for this. i bought my car about 3 months ago, i paid $11,000 for a car that is burning oil like crazy and obviously has a bad motor. i think pontiac should be held responsible. *tr

I have a 2004 pontiac grand prix gt that has the 3.8 liter v6 and i just had to replace the engine on my car. initially when i took the car in, they smelled a burning smell when they opened up the hood. the dealership replaced 2 gaskets and then a week later, my engine broke. it may not only be up to 2003. this could have been the real problem to begin with. the dealership/warranty company replaced the engine with a rebuilt engine. how do i find out if this engine is one of the recalled engines. is there some kind of serial number on the engine that will let me know? *tr

2004 pontiac grand prix burns 1 qt of oil appx every 1500-2000 miles. no leaks after numerous checks. started about 40-42,000 miles (post 36,000 warranty). problem seems to be fairly common on this year grand prix given number of post on grand prix club bulletin board and other sites and all posters noting similar circumstances (ie no leaks). it would seems pontiac has pretty significant problem with 2004 engines which they fail to admit to. *tr

I have experienced engine stalling with my 2004 pontiac grand prix gt numerous, numerous times. the weather does not play a factor in this problem. i have gas in the car, so that is not the cause. the car was taken to the dealer and they could not pinpoint the problem. when the car stalls there is no warning. it has happen to me as i am in drive mode, when i am about to start the car, and sitting in the drive through at fast food restaurants. the time of day nor the time of season does not play a role. i have had this car towed over and over again. my 1998 galant with over 170,000 miles has not gave me any trouble, but yet a 2004 pontiac grand prix gt gives me hell. it is very dangerous to drive a vehicle and you don't know when it will stall. i am a mother and to have my kids in the car when it happens is very scary because i don't know when the car may cut off in drive mode. there is no use to take it back to the dealer when they can't even pinpoint the exact problem. the car has gone through every diagnostic possible.... *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle burst into flames after being parked for 30 mins. the fire department was contacted, and extinguished the fire which occurred in the engine compartment. the vehicle had problems starting, and stalled intermittently prior to the incident. the vehicle was restarted and stalled again. it was restarted and driven to a residence, where it stalled a third time. the contact went inside the residence, and within 30 mins, heard a loud pop, and noticed flames coming out of the front wheel wells. no injuries were sustained, and a police report was taken. the type of fire was unknown. the police had the vehicle towed to a garage, and was deemed a total loss. the contact planned to contact the manufacturer after filing a complaint with the nhtsa. the contact noticed 4 other complaints of the same make and model, who had the same scenario.

2004 pontiac grand prix engine shuts down while driving. immediate failure of power steering (impossible to make a turn while driving= scary!); electric/ electronic failure also. then, after a complete stop, and key off ignition, the car restarts like nothing happens. the car when twice to the dealership, and did not find anything. they think that we don't know how to drive a car! this is a serious matter, and very dangerous! if someone dies from this occurrence, investigation will not concluded to this problem, but more likely to the lost of control of the driver! it happens 3 times to us already, and once with a grand-prix rental. please check it.

While driving 60 mph, the engine died. a few minutes prior to this occurring the transmission felt like the gears were dropping. when the engine died the vehicle immediately lost power steering. the consumer pulled off the road, removed the keys from the ignition, let the vehicle sit for 10 seconds before restarting. the vehicle restarted. the dealership will be contacted. the consumer was informed by other grand prix owners that this is a common problem with these vehicles in which a chip has to be replaced. *jb

On may 31,2004 i went to nimnicht pontiac @ 3919 phillips highway. jacksonville, fl 32207. i found one vehicle, that i purchased. on tuesday, june 8,2004, the car started having problems with acceleration, it was smoking from under the hood ( smoke boiling out from under the hood), running hot, & smelled as if it were burning. wednesday, june 9,2004 they picked up the car. trent stated the temperature gauge was reading high & that was unusual. thursday, june 10,2004. trent rogers called @ 2:30 pm to tell me that they could not find anything wrong with the car. i informed him that i did not want that car back.he would speak to john comer.@ 3:20pm,i called john comer, informed me that he did not have to make me happy. i told him i did not want to wait around, that i needed another vehicle or i wanted my trade-in car back.also stated trent rogers had not made any such comment concerning the vehicle running hot. 3:45pm, richard reese (general manager for nimnicht pontiac) called me & informed me that they found nothing wrong with the car. i told him i did not want that car back. he said, it does not have a cracked or warped head. that concerned me more that he even mentioned a cracked or warped head. he told me that i could come & get another vehicle off his lot if i was not satified. informed him, none on this lot. i wanted another vehicle equivalent to the one i purchased.same color & options as the vehicle i purchased. i then called gm buyback @ 1-800-762-2737. i spoke to ms. c.c.smith @ 3:50pm on 6/10/04. i informed ms. smith of the problems. she called the dealership & they told her that i had requested another car with added options.at no time did i request that. he also informed ms. smith that i needed to return the 24hr test drive vehicle, not me. ms. smith gave me a claim/reference # (1-225552255), but she really could not help me, other than file my claim. i called richard reese back @ 4:45pm & informed him to pick up his vehicle @ my house. *ak

My husband and i own a 2004 pontiac grand prix. we had been experiencing problems with the electronic system (traction control/sts/abs), the lights came on 2009. we bought the car in 2008. we had not being experiencing any other problems other than that that we knew of. my husband did some research and found out that it was a recall on the 2004s for the traction control malfunction; however, he was told that we had missed the recall period and so we had to deal with the problem ourselves. in 2011, i was driving my son and i to the doctor, about 30 minutes away, when we got out the car i smelled something burning and saw so some smoke but it didn't look like it was coming from my car, it looked like it was coming from over a wooden fence. so i thought nothing about it, (especially since we had not been having any problems other that the one describe above) so i got my son and went into the doctors office. we were in there for about 5 minutes, when the receptionist informed everyone that it was a car on fire out in the parking lot. i went outside to move my car since i had remembered smelling something burning when i arrived to the doctors' office. well when i got out back, that's when i realized that it was my car that was on fire. the fire department was called.they put out the fire which had by that time completely burned up the engine. that's where it started, under the hood. one of the firefighters asked me had we recently had any work done on the car. i told him no. anyway, we called the insurance company and the car towed. the insurance company are currently investigating the fire. my husband and i researched and found out that the 1997-2003 had been recalled for this issue, but not the 2004s. looks like to me, that the 2004s should have been recalled as well.

On a 2004 pontiac grand prix gtp with a competition group package, the valve cover gaskets have failed. this causes oil to leak onto the manifold in the engine compartment and allows it to burn. this could in turn cause a fire in the engine. this same problem was recalled on the 1997-2003 models, but has not included the 2004 model. the same problem still exists and must be remedied before fires ensue and lives are lost. also, the headlights bounce or wobble while driving. this could cause issues with the ability to see clearly while driving at night.
