Our 2004 pontiac grand prix has had two failures of the heater motor in three years. in both cases noxious fumes and smoke came from the dashboard. i consider this a safety issue because the sight of smoke coming from the dashboard while on a busy interstate (we were) can result in great anxiety. i'm an electreical engineer and my mechanic let me see the parts. the smoke came from a resistor that is part of the speed control for the motor. it's a very poor design, with heat fins to dissapate the heat into the heater/ac air flow. if the motor starts to drag, current goes up and airflow goes down, with the result that the resistor heats up to the point where it puts smoke into the air stream. i consider this extremely poor design, and a potential fire hazard. i've written to the manufacturer and suggested a new design (i hate having to re-design things done by amatuers!).

I bought a 2004 pontiac grand prix gt2 and i have had a =few problems with it that appear to be quite common the problems are below *go through 1quart of oil approx every 1000 miles *trouble starting when it has already been warmed up. ie after i drive around town and go into a store i come out and try to start and it dies right away. it can take up to 6 tries to get it started. i usually have to press the gas to get it going. *headlamps bounce *blower motor keeps blowing even when the car is shut off. after research i have noticed that these problems are all very common in the 2004 pontiac grand prix. i do not think its right that pontiac has not taken responsibility for this. i bought my car about 3 months ago, i paid $11,000 for a car that is burning oil like crazy and obviously has a bad motor. i think pontiac should be held responsible. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 pontiac grand prix. while driving 30 mph in rainy conditions, smoke appeared from the vents approximately two minutes after the defogger was activated. there were no warning lights illuminated. the contact turned the vehicle off for 20 minutes. when he restarted it, smoke began to engulf the vehicle. he stated that none of the components worked inside the passenger compartment. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they informed him that the a/c motor malfunctioned and melted, which destroyed the electrical wiring system. the vehicle has not been repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. the powertrain was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 83,000.

2004 pontiac grand prix gtp. 45,000 miles. as of today, i have had this vehicle in service eight times for steering-related defects, beginning two weeks from the date of new purchase in january, 2004. three different dealers have all told me it's a design defect...there will be a fix soon. replaced rack and pinion twice, middle steering shaft twice, and rack/pinion and engine cradle bolts spontaneously work loose every 3,000-5,000 miles. now vehicle is out of warranty. most recent visit to century pontiac in tampa, they attempted to charge me $75.00 in order to apply yet another tsb regarding loose steering, steering wheel bind, etc. i had to call pontiac and complain bitterly, they then waived the fee...but did not pay for the rental car. thus far, power steering pump has failed and been replaced, a/c compressor has failed and been replaced, middle steering shaft replaced twice, entire steering column replaced twice, and there is still a persistent jolt through the steering wheel whenever putting car into gear, or turning steering wheel to right, going over a gutter, etc. also, loud clunk resulting in severe shudder in front of vehicle. dealer(s) state there is no fix. have nearly lost control of vehicle three times due to steering suddenly loosening, or binding, wandering off-center, etc. dealer says there's nothing more they can do. when is nhtsa going to listen to all the complaints regarding the steering issues on this vehicle and launch an investigation?? steering rack bolts coming loose? engine cradle bolts coming loose? steering shaft failures and fractures? every time the vehicle is taken to service, the dealers and service managers play dumb and try to say i don't hear anything...or it drives like all the other grand prix's. please don't let gm and pontiac continue to insult our collective intelligence and ignore these steering and design issues to the point where someone gets killed. *nm
