Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles were produced with lower than specified torque on both front brake caliper to steering knuckle attachment bolts. with improper torque, the clamp load at the joint may not be adequate to prevent movement between the caliper bracket and knuckle.
Consequence SummaryDepending on whether one or both bolts backs out or fractures, the result can be locking of the affected wheel during braking and an abrupt steering input in the direction of the locked wheel, reduced braking and noise from the affected wheel, or severing of a brake hose, increased brake pedal travel, and reduced steering control. reduced braking or steering control could cause a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers are to tighten both bolts to the specified torque. owner notification began on june 28, 2004. owners should contact chevrolet 1-800-630-2438 or pontiac 1-800-620-7668.

Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 135,
Consequence SummaryIf enough fluid leaks, the brake pedal will be lower than normal, and stopping distances will be longer. if this occurs when stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will tighten the right rear brake hose fitting to the proper torque specification, and add brake fluid if necessary. owner notification began august 28, 2003. owners should contact pontiac at 1-800-620-7668.

My accident happened on a sunny dry day. i was driving home from work doing about 45 mph when the vehicle in front of me had hit a car that was stopped for the light. i was the fourth car back and had heard the crash. i slammed on the brakes and they grabbed and then proceeded to just continue to go and basically my car hit the back of a truck causing about $10,000 in damage and sending me to the hospital. i had enough room behind that vehicle to stop. it was like the pedal just went to the floor and i had no brakes. i am also concerned because the air bag also did not deploy. gm told me that it's because the bumpers did not meet with each other. more lies if you ask me. i think they need to have these vehicles checked before someone really get hurt bad. this has cost me much grief, loss of work and out of pocket money.*ak

After 10,000 miles my steering wheel was shaking increasingly badly. i assumed it was an issue with my tires. when i took it in to the dealer they told me it was my rotors. they turned them and everything was fine for a while but after 20,000 miles the shaking steering returned. i took it in again and they turned them again. i really think this is a defect in the rotors.

When driving at low speeds there appears to be abs activating problems. the abs is activating at the low speeds. the issue is more noticeable when the vehicle is going over uneven payment or a brick road that should not affect abs.

Many pontiac grand prix owners are having problems with the following sensors. traction control/sts/abs lights come on intermittently or stay on. after doing some research this seems to be a common problem and service dealers have acknowledge that this is a problem. how safe is it for our families and ourselves to be driving cars that do this.

When braking and turning the vehicle at slow speeds, ie parking the car in a lot, the abs will activate. this occurs at least half of the time i make a slow right turn, and has also happened a few times when turning left. i have had the abs activate even without touching the brake pedal (accelerating while turning from an intersection for example). dealership has said the problem is in either the abs sensor or the wiring harness, but the computer was not generating any codes to specify which, so they are so far refusing to fix anything. *tr

I purchased a 2004 pontiac gran dprix gt2 in june of that same year. one week later the repairs began. the most scary occurring on the date mentioned on this complaint, may 26, 2005, eleven months after i purchased the vehicle. my car died while driving 65 mph on the highway with my three small children in the back seat. the car had no power whatsoever, no steering, no gas, no lights, nothing. i thank god we are alive. the mechanics at the dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty ignition switch. after this incident i rented a car at my own expense for eight weeks. we did not step foot in the vehicle for that period of time. for financial reasons i slowly began driving my car again. there were repairs before that event as well as afterwards. these include the brain, transmission, brakes, axle, wheel bearings, steering, sunroof, fuel injectors, and safety belts. *jb

On 8/20/05, the traction and stability control lights came on while driving on the interstate with cruise control on. after stopping the car, turning it off, and turning it back on, the lights went out. between that time and 8/23/05, this occurred 5 more time. on 8/23/05, the brakes locked up on the vehicle while driving on the interstate using cruise control. i took it to the dealer. they diagnosed it as codes c0187 & c0197, and replaced a faulty yaw sensor. i took it back to the dealership on 10/19/05 with the same problem, after occurring 3 times within a 2 day period. the dealership drove it and it occurred twice, but they cannot determine what is causing the problem. they have now had the car for 6 days. the dealership is jim hudson, and their phone # is 803-783-0110. *nm

I was involved in a car accident on 7/5/05. i attempted to brake in order to avoid hitting a car. i slammed on the brakes but my car just kept going and going. it must have continued for about 50 feet. i feel if my brakes would have worked i wouldn't have hit the car. it's like my brakes only partly worked. i just bought the car 3 months ago and was not aware of the recall on the brake system. i will look into that. another thing, i was told that since no one was in the passenger seat, the air bag should not have deployed. the passenger airbag engaged and broke my windshield.

My complaint is not specifically about a car - it is monr about the company that rented me the car. monday, aug 2, i rented a 2004 pontiac grand prix from avis at the baltimore washington international (bwi) airport. while driving to work on the northbound fairfax county parkway on the morning of aug 3 (normal weather condidtions), i stepped on the brakes (somewhat hard). the wheels on the car immediately locked up and the car began to spin towards the right. the car did a full 180 turn through 2 lanes of traffic landing on the shoulder, w fraction of an inch away from the guardrail. *ak i was extremely lucky. i did not hit another car, or get hit by a car or even smash into the guardrail. no damage was done to the car and i was not injured. when i returned the car to avis (because i no longer felt safe driving it) the emplyee behind the counter mentioned something about a brake recall and wondered if it was that make and model. i found the recall via your website this morning. apparently my accident is the exact consequense of not getting the recall fixed. i'm appalled that avis rented me a car that they knew had problems and was being recalled. i want to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else. i'm sure that avis has hundreds of 2004 pontiac grand prix's in their fleet, so this issue needs to be remedied immediately. i don't really know whose attention i should bring this too, but i cannot imagine anyone else encountering this incident and being as lucky as i was to walk away unscathed. i'd greatly appreciate any assistance you can give me in this matter.

I was driving down a 4 lanes highway heading home at 2:30p.m. as i proceeded to slow down for a red light, all the lighs in the vehicle flashed and then everything went out, including my power steering and brakes. luckly no cars were to my right and i was able to turn the stiff wheel some and jump a crib. i then had to use my parking brake to stop the vehicle.*ak

Problem: braking system problem. occurred only once so far. i had stopped at a store and when i left, the first time i applied the brake it felt the same as if i had just gone through a car wash (much greater pedal pressure needed to stop). i continued on to my workplace and had to apply the brakes several more times. each subsequent time the same condition happened. much greater pedal pressure was required to bring the car to a stop. it felt as though 50-75% of the braking power was gone. i immediately checked the fluid and it was right at the max line. strangely, when i left work several hours later the problem disappeared and has not happened since. obviously i'm concerned about it possible happening again. i'm guessing it must have been an electronic glitch of some sort??! *la

Steering wobbles, when brakes applied steering wobbles even more, car seems to want to go in any direction it chooses , was told in oct 05 two rear wheels had flat spots, replaced 4 new wheels and 4 new tires in feb 06, problem still there took to tire kindom where wheels and tires where purchased and was told that inner tire rods were bad, took to dealer and was told no problem but never took tires off or checked tire rods, now being told by dealer everything is tight, still wobbles , still wants to drive to the left, to the right any which way it wants to go, now being told rotors need to be done, oh yeah when it rains the passenger side floor gets drenched, clicks from left and right turn, but dealer says nothing wrong. *jb

I have an ongoing and unresolved issue with the brakes on my 2004 grand prix. the brakes have squeaked when stopping since the car was purchased in august 2004. i have taken the vehicle to the dealership several times for service. initially the rotors were resurfaced and the brake pads replaced. after about 500-1000 miles the brakes begin to squeek again. after a call to pontiac by my local dealership, they were told that they are aware of the issue but have no resolution. since that time the dealership has completely replaced the brakes and roters and the problem still exists, squeeking when stopping about 70% of the time. i am concerned that the design defect results in a safety issue in the brakes performance.*ak
