Note: the complaint and warranty counts given in the failure report summary of this resume include all records related to tire wear and wheel alignment and are not limited to tire-strut contact.general motors (gm) identified two contributors to premature front tire wear in the subject vehicles.one of the contributors causing the premature tire wear was out of specification negative camber.gm stated that excessive negative camber could be caused by improper camber settings from the factory or bending of the front strut assemblies due to sharp road impact (i.e., severe pot holes).to improve camber settings from the factory, gm stated that from february of 2005 through may of 2006 several modifications were made to the camber setting fixture.gm also noted that excessive negative camber could result in front tire to strut contact, which could also be caused by use of non-original equipment (oe) tires and/or wheels.gm stated that contact of the front tire and front strut assembly can cause a polishing on the tire sidewall and/or strut assembly; however, this does not cause a sudden loss of air. general motors provided odi with the final factory front camber settings where available for complaint and warranty claim vehicles.approximately 90 percent of these vehicles had right wheel camber settings that were out of design specification.four percent of the vehicles had left wheel camber settings that were out of specification.in a review of consumer complaints, most noted excessive tire wear to varying degrees to both front tires.for complaints indicating excessive wear to a single front tire, 90 percent involved the right side. although in some cases there are indications of tire contact with front strut assemblies in the subject vehicles, analysis of tire wear patterns in photographs shows the greatest wear occurring on the inboard tread surface from road wear and not on the area of the tire on the upper shoulder that contacts the strut.this is consistent with the known tire wear patterns associated with excessive negative camber, with or without strut contact.this is most apparent in some pictures, which show minor tire-strut contact while exhibiting significant wear of the inner tread surface of the tires.based on data reviewed during the investigation, while excessive negative camber is an apparent issue, the premature tire wear appears to be primarily caused by tire to road surface contact as opposed to contact of the front tires to the front strut assemblies.odi reviewed approximately 1,400 total complaints and warranty claims potentially related to the alleged defect.virtually all of the reports relate to uneven/excessive tire wear or some awareness of the tire-strut contact issue.odi was able to identify 9 tire air loss incidents alleged to be caused by tire-strut contact, with5 of these describing a slow air loss.while there was evidence of tire-strut contact in some of these vehicles, odi's analysis did not find that this contact was the cause of the air loss but rather a secondary symptom of the excessive negative camber condition that results in rapid road wear on the inboard tread surface. odi is aware of one crash alleged to be caused by contact of the front strut to front tire.however, analysis of the information provided by the consumer, gm and a third party investigator does not indicate that tire-strut contact was a factor in the crash.odi is unaware of any injuries or fatalities attributed to the alleged defect. odi has not identified a safety related defect trend in the subject vehicles.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

My 2005 pontiac gto was purchased with 53000 miles and manufactured with 245mm tires that are too wide and rub on the front strut. this has caused excessive tire wear. other 04-05 gtos have has the same problem. this has caused tire failure and accidents in other gtos.

I purchased this car new in 2005, i have 38,000 miles on it today and i am on my third set of tires and fifth alignment. my tires on the rear, wear severely on the inside each time, so i more carefully watched and had rechecking the alignment on a regular basis along with tire rotation. this time i took it to a discount tire company and they told me that they can not align the rear end and all componets look good, go to dealer. i went to dealer and showed them the specks what the car was out and they said they could do the alignment. they did a alignment for a fee and told me it need parts, front camber kit, rear needs two bushings and gm part 1 on the exploded view known as differential bracket which holds the rear end together for a price of parts $1,249.00 and labor $664.00 total $1913 and another four wheel alignment for just a little over $2,000.00. i said why are you charging me for an alignment if you can not do it properly and i had already given you the alignment specs from discount tire company. they said all machines are different and we have to do our own. so your telling me that this problem that i have had since new is a structural part flaw that you have not recognized before but have been charging me for alignments and tires multiple times. no, we feel your car got hit on the right side and it caused the damage. i said the car has never hit anything and it is a preigsiting problem from new that has been over looked at my expense. took car to a third party and they said there are no parts that are structural damaged, they got on line and saw all the blogs for this identical contidion and that is why i am reporting the problem. the fix is camber kit for rear from manufacture in australia where car is made and they have been aware of for year, please make this a recall from gm.

This is in regards to my 2005 pontiac gto. i had noticed excessive tire wear on the inside of my front tires. i then felt between the tire and the strut and there is only about 1/8 or less clearance between the strut and the tire. the front struts rub on the front tires every time the vehicle rolls over any small bump. this is causing excessive tire wear and sends shocks through the steering system when driving. i went to the dealership and was told the strut towers were flipped over help with the clearance. this was total nonsense , especially when i jacked up the car the next day and no parts had been removed from the car and the clearance between the tire and the strut was the same. *tr

Replaced 2 right rear tires from sidewall blowout. 2005 gto with 25000 miles, front and rear tires had inner wear. left rear and right front were cut to the wire and were about to blow. have pictures of the wear and of the lack of clearance between front strut and tire. dealer towed vehicle to their shop. replaced all tires, both rear coil springs, and aligned. nothing was done to correct front of vehicle. when i picked up the vehicle from the dealer, i asked to see the clearance of the tires and struts on a model in stock. clearance was less than one half inch. this is a major defect that can have serious consequences for drivers and their safety. gm should be forced to correct the issue immediately and not just keep replacing parts until the warranty is up. *jb

After reading cleveland's newsnet5 report about front tire problems on the 2004-2005 gto, i realized i have had a similar problem. i had to replace my tires at 24,400 miles due to the right front tire being severely cut and worn on the inside tread. since my tire tread was about half way worn, i chose to replace all instead of one, or two. i discovered the problem during a routine tire rotation, and did not see any sign of abnormal wear when i rotated them at 20,000. i immediately took the car to firestone and had an alignment done. the right front was off slightly negative camber causing the tire to rub against the strut the clearance is very close when properly aligned. after replacing the tires with pirelli pzero m+s 245/45-17 i had the technician verify clearance with the struts, and he said you can see light meaning the clearance was close. i have logged 10,000 miles on these tires and have rotated them twice noticing very minor inside wear and slight wear indications on the struts themselves. since i have lifetime wheel alignments with firestone, i have had the alignment checked 4 times since then with minor camber and toe adjustments up front. my primary concern is a minor misalignment can shred a tire in 4,400 miles, or less. thank you for your attention. *jb

The factory installed tires on my 2005 pontiac gto rub against the strut mounts causing excessive wear on the inside lip of the tire. i have replaced two sets of tires with only 15,000 miles on each set. my father was driving the vehicle when the most recent set of tires caused erratic steering conditions. he was not injured, but the rubber on the tires was so severly damaged from rubbing on the strut mounts that the rubber was separated from the steel belt. this rubbing could potentially cause a blowout which would be very dangerous at the high speeds the gto is capable of. there is a class action lawsuit in california currently on this issue. i just want gm to notify gto owners of this problem, even if they are unwilling to pony up the cash to fix their own engineering blunder.

I bought a 2005 gto and with only 27000 miles the stock front tires are rubbing on trhe front strut bracket. i was told by a shop not to drive it as the tires are close to a blowout. five mionutes on the internet reveals this is a very common problem that has caused many accidents.

This is a daily problem with the 2005 pontiac gto having its both front tires rub against the inside shocks during driving. the tire installed ni the car are exactly what is recommended. i am not the only one facing this issue. all the other owners have the same issue. this could result in an accident as the tire rub increases during a turn or braking. constant rub could lead to tire damage and burat during highway driving. i have all the tires aligned rotated and balanced also. the problem does not get resolve, pontiac serviceman say it is a fault in the car.. *tr

My 2005 pontiac gto has issues with the struts causing my tires to wear on the inside and jerks really bad upon applying the brakes causing the steering wheel to shake as well. this is scary at times and gm needs to be investigated for this vehicle. i have put 4 sets of tires on the car, this is ridiculous and not safe. i fear i will have a blowout due to the inside tire wearing on the struts. this is very dangerous. *tr

2005 pontiac gto from struts rubbing on tire, causing a blowout and almost complete loss of control. *tr
11/11/2008210001
I have a 2005 pontiac gto. the problem exist in the front suspension of the vehicle. the problem occurs when the front ire rubs against the strut tower causing the inner wall of the tire to erode, exposing the steel in the tire which will lead to a massive blowout in the tire. there is a flaw in the design. i had an extensive debate with the service guy at a local gm dealership about this, my two other gm cars i own have gone a year maybe even 2 without an alignment and neither one of them ate the tires off the car! this posses a safety hazard to me and anyone else on the road if that tire blows. thank god i noticed the steel showing on my tire only cause i backed in and the wheels were turned out. the problem is because oem parts in the suspension have failed and need to be replaced. this failure means that your front end will not hold a proper alignment regardless....resulting in strut rub. i spent over $900 in parts and labor getting this fixed when the manufacturer should have taken care of this. this has happened to thousands of gto's and nothing has been done about it. my tire would have blown if i would not have noticed it, imagine that occurring on the freeway, recipe for disaster. *t

Strut rub on pontiac gto 2005. noticed steering wheel vibrating and sent the car to have an alignment. the technician doing the alignment then had me come into the shop and look at the right front end and there was a 1/4 inch grove dug into the inside of the tire due to rubbing the welds on the strut. only way recommended to repair is to but a $1400.00 suspension rebuild kit from an aftermarket parts distributor. the technician then checked service bulletins and recall notices for the car and found that gm is saying its wear and tear so they won't be held responsible for the damages nor the repairing of the vehicle. in research for the fixing of the problem found that many other owners of gto's are having the same problem. as for the consequences..... the tire will be grooved so bad that going down the highway at any speeds or hitting the smallest of potholes in the road will result in a blow out and lead to having no control of the vehicle afterwards. so could result in death or serious injury!!! *tr

Just checking the tires notice the tire wear on the inside so took the tire out and notice that the front strut had a shine part to it that indicates that the front tires were rubbing and cause the two front tires to wear out with the wires coming out did some research and find out that i wasn't the only one with this issue since the dealer wont help i replace the front tires and in the process to also replace struts and tie rods which it seems to be the problems for every gto owners that i contact with the 17 inch wheels. *tr

05 pontiac gto with bad strut bushings, horrible factory alignment, etc to cause my tires to rub the front struts. i almost had a blow out. i first complained to the dealer about the issue of the inside of the front tire wearing. they suggested an alignment for $80+. i refused. i personally removed the front wheels later to discover the tires were indeed rubbing (why couldn't the dealer see this? they are trained mechanics). they replaced tires and performed the alignment once again under warranty. my tires are not cupping on the outside. i think the dealer solved the strut rubbing problem by creating another problem... *tr

2005 pontiac gto with 18 performance tire/wheel package. premature suspension bushing wear causing premature tire wear and alignment issues in only 14,000 miles. tires are completely worn out on the inner edge in 14,000 miles. fortunately, i caught this before their was a blow out of a steering axle tire which could have caused a loss of vehicle control and possibly a mva. even though this is a widely known problem gm has not addressed it and the dealership is unresponsive. fortunately this vehicle has the 18 tire package or the tire side wall would be rubbing on the strut as they do on the vehicles with the standard 17 tire/wheel package. *tr

I have a 2005 pontiac gto. with less than 18,000 on the car, the steering wheel started to shake very rough. i took it in for a front end alignment and discovered the thread on the inside rim of the front tires was completely worn down. i had to replace the tires with less than 18,000 miles due to excessive wear. i have since learned through the news that apparently there is a defect in the front end where the tires are rubbing against the struts. it cost me over $600 in tires. i am now concerned about the possible dangers of tire blow outs and at minimum having to place the tires again very soon. *tr

Looked at my front tires on my 2005 pontiac gto and noticed that they are worn down on the inside strut side almost to the steel belt. i looked on the rear wheels and noticed a similar wear on the inside of the tire from when those tires were on the front. if i wouldn't have noticed this, i could have had a blow out. the wear is terrible. the vehicle is new with low miles. the vehicle now has 21,000 miles and apparently has been doing this since i bought it over a year ago. nothing has been done yet to correct this issue. i am in lingo on what to do. the old parts are definitely still available and can be made available upon request. *tr

Noticed both front tires wearing badly on the inside edge. at 14k miles, i rotated the tires. when i removed the front tires, i noticed the tire was hitting the strut assembly. there were visible rub marks on both front struts. now, at 20k miles i removed the tires for inspection. the front 2 tires had only been on for approx 6k miles (since rotation). both front tires were severely worn on the inside to the point that the tread had separated/split and you could see the inner construction of the tire! i'm afraid if i hadn't checked these tires when i did, there would have been a blowout on the highway which could have caused severe injury.*jb

Stock tire one (front right) failed on interstate due to extreme tire wear on the inside section of tread. this happened around 18,000 mi on the gto. i replaced the tire. the two on front left failed via a slow leak at 21,000 mi. when replacing the second tire i noticed the same extreme wear on inside part of the tire(internal wire belt showing. i inspected the rear tires , recently rotated, and found same excessive inside tread wear. after inspecting the wheel wells, it became obvious that the tires are consistently rubbing inside against the front struts due to lack of clearance. i had to purchase a complete set of 4 new tires and i also photographed the used/worn tires and the worn/scratched front struts. this vehicle is still under the manufacturer's warranty and i have not yet reported this problem to my local dealership. *ak

I noticed the inner tread on both of my front tires on my 2005 pontiac gto were excessively worn. the car has approx. 18,500 miles on it. i brought this to the dealers attention. the dealer acknowledged a problem and told me that there had been an update to the alignment specs for the car. they offered to replace both front tires if i payed for an alignment (approx $90). i went ahead with the service. i have not driven the car much since the changes were made so i do not know if or when the problem will occur again. *tr

The manufacturer of the 2005 pontiac gto has chosen a standard wheel/tire combination and wheel alignment specifications that cause excessive tire wear to the front passenger and driver's side tires. the proper alignment as set by the manufacturer's standards is in negligence to potential safety standards and good practice for a performance type car. during regular driving it is probable and likely that the inside of both front tires will rub in a dangerous fashion on the suspensions components (namely strut) causing the tire to fail prematurely. the failure is such that the tire becomes a serious safety hazard specifically exposing the tire steel belts prior to the visible wear bar indicators being exposed. one proper correction to limit the possibility of continued tire rub would be to align the camber in a fashion that is more specific than the manufacturer's standards. after having an alignment at the manufacturer's certified service center, this correction was not performed and the manufacturer was further negligent while not properly informing the owner or the service center staff about this tire rub issue. after having the tires rotated at the aforementioned service center the tires were not properly inspected for safety. the excessive tire wear was visible at approximately 18,000 miles. at this point, the front tires had failed and should have been replaced under warranty due to the factory alignment settings. during the first 12,000 miles on the car the original front tires had been damaged in such a way that steering alignment could not be maintained. this was observed from the service center staff. at that point on the said mentioned day, the rear tires were also failed. the service center was not properly informed about these issues causing an unsafe situation. *tr

On a long road trip i started to notice what smelled like hot rubber. i noticed that the inside tread of the tires was worn, almost completely bald while the rest of the tire had tread. upon removal of the tire i found a wear mark on the front strut where the tire had been rubbing. the car is at the dealer now, but they are claiming this is not a common issue. after some research, however, i have found many from 2004 to 2006 gto owners reporting the same problem, and 3 out of the 4 gto's that i know the owners of locally are having the problem.*ak

When rotating my tires at 6000 miles, i noticed that there was pain missing on the front struts by the top of the tires. on the passenger side there was also a small build up of rubber on the strut and visible wear on the tire. i looked up on a gto forum and found that this is a common problem. i took the car to the dealer and informed them of the information i found on the internet. the dealer realigned the front wheels because they had too much negative camber. the people on the forums think the real problem is that the front strut bushings have collapsed from being tied down during transportation from australia. time will tell if the realignment fixed my problem but i suspect that the front strut bushings will collapse even more over time and the tire rub issue will be back.*ak

The tires rub the front struts of my car. had to purchase four new tires and get a re-alignment to fix the problem. this problem is not a result of the oem tires used on the vehicle, but a problem with the alignment. when gm brought the holden monaro over to the united states badged as a gto, the monaro was aligned for a 235 tire. gm put a 245 tire at all four corners and didn't change the alignment specs. this is what is causing the rub. it has absolutely nothing to do with the tire's structure/rubber compound/manufacturing. it is solely an alignment issue that has been in existence since the 2004 gto first came over. *nm
