Defect SummaryGm is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 pontiac vibe vehicles. the engine control module (ecm) for the subject models equipped with the 1zz-fe (lv6) engine and two-wheel drive may have been improperly manufactured. there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on varistors on the circuit board.
Consequence SummaryThere are a variety of warnings and consequences associated with the defect. the engine warning lamp could be illuminated, harsh shifting could result, the engine may not start, or the engine could shut off while the vehicle is being driven. an engine shutoff while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the production number of the ecm and replace the ecm if necessary. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin on or about january 14, 2011. owners may contact gm at 1-800-620-7668.
NotesGm's safety recall no. is 10282.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

On august 26, 2010, toyota submitted a defect information report to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) regarding problems with engine control modules that could result in engine stall while driving in certain model year (my) 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla, corolla matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive and manufactured between april 19, 2004 and january 2, 2008.toyota's report indicated that cracks may develop at certain solder point or on varistors on the ecms.according to toyota, such cracks generally resulted in engine warning lamp illumination, harsh shifting or engine no-start.in some cases, if the cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.toyota will notify owners of subject vehicles that they should return their vehicles to a toyota or pontiac dealer.dealers will be instructed to inspect the production number of the ecm for each vehicle and replace the ecm if necessary.on november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request, submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible conditions with ecms used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles:1) cracks forming between the ic and the board caused by an improperly cured conformal coating applied to the circuit boards after the soldering process is completed; and 2) cracks occurring in a variable resistor (varistor) due to overheating.during the manufacturing process a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor.between march and august 2010, toyota began collecting ecms from the field to further investigate failure modes that may result in engine stall.toyota also conducted durability testing on ecms collected from in-use vehicles to assess whether the problems may be a continuing trend. in addition, they conducted durability testing in order to assess whether this problem was a continuing trend.toyota found that 4 of 32 collected ecms malfunctioned after thermal shock testing.toyota also confirmed that cracking could develop at solder points on the ecm circuit board that could lead to engine stall while driving and that this trend was likely to continue.the manufacturer failure data in this resume is limited to my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.based on toyota's recall, this engineering analysis has been closed.

While driving on the freeway during moderate traffic my 2005 pontiac vibe completely stalled and would not restart. after barely making it to the side of the road i called a tow truck to tow me to the dealership. i had went online while waiting for the tow and found that there was a recall for the engine control module that caused the same symptoms as i had. the dealership confirmed the vin and ordered the recall item. the next day they called me and informed me that they had installed the new control module and the car would still not start and they would need to dig further to find the cause. after digging more into it they called the next day (day 3) and told me that the exhaust camshaft was broken and recommended a new engine due to the amount of sludge and unknown factors with the current engine. the estimate of repair was $6100. i called my mechanic and he said that he could look and see if the camshaft could be replaced or if the engine did indeed need replaced. i had it towed to my mechanic (day 4) when i picked up the car at the dealership i was given a broken bolt that the mechanic said had been the problem. he said it had gotten lodged in a way that caused the camshaft to break., something he had never seen before. when i got it to my mechanic he said the same thing, that bolt should never have broken and caused the camshaft to jam. i've never seen anything like this. when i ask what could have caused the bolt to break he said manufacturer's defect. that's it, nothing else would cause a bolt in that position to ever break. he aquired a refurbished engine with about 30k miles on it and replace the entire engine (the cam/bolt had damaged the valves) for about $2600 and it runs fantastic. i was very lucky that when the engine stalled i could get through traffic and make it to the side without getting hit or causing more of a traffic jam.

12/10/201097000
2005 pontiac vibe pcm failure. engine light came on, and the transmission began shifting very hard. engine code p2716. i have read numerous reports where people are told by dealerships to replace the transmission, and after doing so the symtops still occur. after finally replacing the pcm, the issues were resolved. that means $4000 in wasted repairs. i have contaced gm with case 71-902887626. the car only shifts poorly when the engine light is on, so it seems logical that the issue is electrically related. (pcm) so far gm has denied that the pcm in this car is affected by the current recall. a monkey can put two and two together in this situation. i writing this for other vibe owners who get the run around with gm and their dealership.

Car began rough shifting and check engine light came on. taken to a gm dealer for repair. symptoms appear to be related to nhtsa campaign 10v-387 (gm ref number 10282). iniitially, dealer denied that there was a recall related to the problems displayed by the car. after sending the dealer the recall information and the initial letter sent to me by gm, dealer admits that there is a recall, but no parts available to fix. the only solution offered was to continue to drive the car with the problem. dealer will not escalate the issue through gm.

Every so often, i will go to start my car and it will not turn over unless i gun the gas! took it to a dealership and they said they replaced come sort of chip and said there was a recall. it happened again this year so i took it to another dealership. they said the first dealership lied to me. there were no recalls and the part they replaced was not what would cause my problem. car just doesn't want to start sometimes! well maintained. at 86,000 miles. i also have problems with the car idling very hard! shakes the windows so they rattle when i stop throughout any given trip. dealership also told me this was normal as well.....i don't think so!!!! *tr

On 10/16/2008 i was driving my 2005 vibe. i pulled out from a side street and accelerated, less than 2 blocks later i heard a loud pop/bang sound and pulled over because i also felt the car loose speed. i turned car off and popped hood, then saw oil all over the engine and all along the street behind me. had car towed to my mechanic and was informed that my crank broke and blew a hole in the side of my engine block the size of a dinner plate. i have 60,000 miles on my car and have maintained it properly. my mechanic informed me that there is nothing i did or failed to do that caused this. i feel strongly that this was a factory defect and want to know how to get it repaid without shelling out 3,00.00 for a new engine. *tr
