Key locks up in ignition and will not turn to off position. key is stuck and will not release from ignition. to get key out car must be turned to on position and back off again. friends of ours also had a saturn ion from 2005 and they had the same issue. the key would become stuck in the ignition and they would have to start the car and turn it off (sometimes several times) to get the key out. our worry is that the problem will become more extreme and dangerous where we cannot turn the car off (as i have read in other complaints) as well as not being able to eventually free the key. this is a defect that needs to be recalled and fixed! *tr

When i try to take out my key i can not remove it. i am able to turn off the motor, but then the key is stuck in that position and i can not remove it. i am concern that they key could stick in the position where the car is still running or that it won't come out at all.. i sometimes have to stay in my car for 2-3 minutes, so that i can remove the key. i know i can remove the key when the car makes a certain sound. it is a soft click, as if something is released. it sounds similar to the when you unlock your car doors with the automatic switch, but quieter. the key sticks 1-2 times/week at least. (i use my car twice a day, to and from work, this has been going on since i purchased the car several years ago. at the time it had maybe 40,000 miles. now it has 82000 miles. *tr

This vehicle was purchased brand new and driven very little. protected in closed in garage. drove to colorado springs for vacation and went to visit relatives. parked vehicle in front of relative home and the key couldn't be turned to shut off the car. fortunately there was a neighbor of my relatives that new how to shut it off by disconnecting the battery cables. to start the car the cables had to be hooked back up. drove to ferguson buick gmc in colorado springs and they checked it. the tumbler came apart, won't turn off , replaced ignition lock. was charged for housing kit (15857948), code cyl, cylinder kit (20869121), labor and cost of parts totalled $614.22. with only 16, 607 miles from 2006 to 2012 this should not have happened. today, november 30, 2012, i went to drive my vehicle and when i started the engine all the lights on the dash and message about steering off trac keeps flashing and it said something about steering fluid, brakes and the lights were going crazy. i am afraid to drive it so i drove it back into my garage. couldn't drive it like that. now what is wrong. this vehilce has been paid for since 2008 and only has 19, 000 miles on it. my husband bought me this vehicle as a surprise and little did he know he would get pancreatic cancer the following year. he wanted me to have a dependable extra vehicle. i cannot keep paying money to fix a vehicle that i am afraid to drive. may get stranded somewhere. i wouldn't feel in good conscious to even sell it to anyone. not worth what he paid for it. *tr

I have had a slight problem with my saturn ion since i have purchased it from my dealership. the key will get stuck every other time i have tried to shut it off. it was a minor inconvenience at the most. but yesterday i had my key get stuck while the vehicle was running! i had to have the battery disconnected and pull a fuse just to get it to shut off. i looked online for hours and hours and found out it is most likely the ignition lock cylinder. there were so many complaints on the saturn ions doing this i was shocked that a recall has not been issued. i am frustrated at the dealership saying it will be $90 just to look at it, and then they will give me an estimate. online i have seen that the average cost paid to have this fixed is $300-$500. why should i have to spend more of my hard earned money if this is clearly the manufacturers fault? if nothing is done about this i will have lost all faith in people. *tr

My car won't start due to ignition switch malfunction. i've replaced ignition switch as suggested by owner's manual to no avail, problem persists. i've also taken the car for service to a certified gm/saturn service center (dealer service). the car battery and starter motor are in good condition. only after many, many, attempts to start the car it'll eventually turn on. once car is turn off, for example stopping at gas station for gas, problem manifests itself again, car won't start. there are numerous accounts of this problem (2006 saturn ion ignition switch malfunction) found by doing an online (internet) search. please help! *tr

In 2008 my key was stuck in the ignition not allowing my car to shut off. after several hours in the blazing son with my son, a tow truck came and had to disconnect my battery and take out the ignition relay just to get my car to stop running. my car almost over heated and ran out most my gas.the ignition cylinder and switch was replaced costing over seven hundred dollars. now in 2012 the same thing has happened again. i was quoted another six hundred and eighty dollars to replace it again. since i do not have the funds to replace such a costly unexpected repair i am forced to live with a car that i can not drive. my key is stuck in the ignition not allowing me to lock my doors which leaves my car open for anyone to destroy it or rob it. since you can only access the battery by the truck and the trunk can only be opened by key or automatic key ring. i can no longer access my battery to hook it back up. this is because the only other way to get to open the trunk is by having the seats down in the back and climbing through the trunk to open it. even if someone else does open the trunk. connecting the battery and disconnecting the battery in hundred degree weather is not acceptable. since being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder i can no longer due such thing. if connected i can start my vehicle. actually after replacing the ignition relay it starts itself. i see online that the ignition or its parts is an ongoing problem with my vehicle. when is it going to become a recall? *tr

My key is locked in the ignition in the on position, and will not turn to off, the only way to turn off the vehicle is to stall it , and disconnect the battery wires to keep the battery from draining down too much. *tr

The ignition lock cylinder in my vehicle seized up - my car was running, and i was unable to turn the key or turn the car off, though i can remove the key and the car stays running. the key is still stuck to on and the only way i'm able to turn the car off is to stall it (manual transmission) and pull the battery fuse. from reading forums on this problem i know this is a very, very common problem for saturn ions. this part absolutely needs to be recalled. in the meantime, to save hundreds at the dealer i will have to replace the part myself. *tr

Received notice from gm regarding power steering assist motor recall. drove with no power steering 40 miles to local dealership.towed it home 4 days later. the car hasn't started since. i was aware of the pass lock problem and told the dealer the car might take a few tries to start. the steering wheel is now crooked and the key sticks in the ignition. this is a new problem. for three hundred dollars the dealer said he would fix it. he claims he did the work requested. i wouldn't know because the car hasn't started since. drive it in and tow it out ...now that's customer service for you!!! a free repair cost me the use of my car and 200 in gas and tow expenses. wonder if i have power steering??? hard to trust a dealer that states i never touched the column, your pump is under the hood pump??? even i know there is no pump or power steering fluid. *tr

Every time fuel is slightly below a quarter tank the engine stalls as if the car is running out of gas and the cars drastically reduces speed with minimum power. also, after the incident occurred i went online to research the problem and found out that the vehicle had been recalled for fuel pump problems as well as lighting irregularities. furthermore, as i continued using my vehicle the ignition switch cylinder broke causing the key to be stuck and was unable to turn off the ignition of the car. luckily, i have a stick shift transmission and was able to turn off the car by putting it into 4th gear and letting go of the clutch to turn off the ignition. unfortunately, the car battery remains on and in order to completely turn off the car i have to disconnect the battery cable so the batter life is not drained. *tr

Ignition key cylinder failure: the key would turn but not advance beyond run to start the engine. after replacing the key cylinder the ignition key works but the ignition switch passlock system would not engage; saturn was faulted with the ease of theft of their vehicles prompting their initiation of the failure-prone passlock system. this owner works in high risk/dangerous area on a federal facility. fortunately this time the incident occurred at home after driving from that facility. we noted there are many hundreds of complaints filed against gm for this defect, many with personal/property risk as noted here, but nothing has been done. if this recurs with personal damage we guarantee there will be a significant class action suit filed against gm which is likely to be highly successful; we are seeking the advice of our attorneys. we will not divulge any other such or related information at this time. we additionally noted to date nothing has been done by gm to correct this problem, vis-a-vis in a recall or refund for time/material/labor or personal time lost, other than to discontinue the saturn brand. it has been difficult to find suitable service of any kind, mainly because gm dealers refuse to work on saturns: we hate those cars. at this point the reprogramming feature of the dysfunctional passlock system does not work. the vehicle will have to be towed 39 miles to a dealership.

Upon parking and attempting to exit the vehicle, i can not get the key out of the ignition switch. it is stuck in the accessory position. if left for a period of time it will usually come out. but if left in the vehicle for an extended period of time in the stuck accessory position, the battery is drained due to the systems that are still left on. this is a persistant problem. i have not taken the vehicle to a dealer for repair or diagonsis. reading the complaints on this website convinces me that this is a general problem with saturn ions. this vehicle has already been part of the fuel pump replacement recall.

I have a 2006 saturn ion-2. every morning when i get in my car and i go to start it doesn't start and the passlock light comes on. when i called saturn the said it is my ignition switch. the problem i have is that this has been happening to all varieties of saturn models, including ones before 2006. i have read many reviews and hundreds of people have the same exact problem with their saturn. if saturn or gm sees this happening how come this has not been declared as a recall? i would like saturn to fix the issue since the bad thing is they know about it and if you are out of warranty you are paying for a problem saturn should have recalled, but instead they make money off the problem.

When it is cold outside (around or below freezing) or just very wet outside my car will not start. it has what is described as a no crank/no start with full power issue. my car has complete power, but it will not turn over. a technical service bulletin says that it is my ignition switch or the body control module. this appears to be a normal problem with ion's in all model years.

I am experiencing a variety of problems with my 2006 saturn ion. the power steering stopped working, the speedometer stopped working (it remains at 0 regardless of my speed), also the odometer doesn't seem to work either - my mileage does not increment when i drive. my car registers a diagnostic code of p0502: vehicle speed sensor a circuit low input. i saw posts online in various forums from 2007 saturn ion owners who say that they received letters from gm in 2009 to have this problem fixed under warranty but why didn't i get a letter in 2009? gm and the nhtsa have apparently been aware of this and watching the problem for a couple of years now - it's gm's responsibility to fix this since they didn't forewarn me and encourage me to get this fixed back in 2009 when they knew enough to have 2007 saturn ion owners take their cars in to have this problem fixed.

Today was the second time the ignition has seized up when trying to turn off the car when parking. the first time (a few months ago) we had a new ignition installed. it already is doing the same thing. when putting the car in park, the key/ignition will not move at all so we were unable to turn off the car. we had to block the airflow to the engine to stop the car and also remove unattach the battery because all of the electrical components were still on.

Beginning in november of 2010, my 2006 saturn ion will frequently not start when i enter my key and turn the ignition. this usually occurs in cold temperatures, but has also happened in warm temperatures. the security light on my dashboard will light up and it will take at least 10 minutes, sometimes up to 40 minutes for my car to finally start. i have missed several days of work because of this problem and have spent over $1000 trying to repair this problem with no luck. i have seen that thousands of other saturn ions have the same issue. a recall needs to happen!

For the past 5 months, the saturn ion 3 power steering will intermitently go out. when i first start the car the power steering works fine, and then at any random time the car makes a ding, ding noise and then there is no power steering. if the car is shut off and turned back on the power steering is fine. then a few miles down the road it turns off again, almost every day. this makes it very difficult to turn corners. the next problem is if it is damp or cold (below 60) in the morning at 8am the car will not turn over or start, until the sun comes out and warms up the car, by noon the car starts just fine. i can get it started if i place two warm blankets on the battery and motor and wait a few minutes, then the car will start. the drivers side windows have also stopped working.

I am beginning to believe that the issue with the saturn ion is an electical or computer based. i put in a complaint earlier about how the car shuts off in the middle of making turns. this morning as i went to work i was met with the automatic steering not working. at first i thought that maybe the emergency break was still up. i checked my steering fluid and it is full. i turned the car off and then on again and tried to move the wheel. no dice. i drove the car to work fighting with the steering all the way there. when i got to work i called for assistance to get my car to a shop. after making the arrangements, i went to try to straighten up the vehicle somewhat so that others could park beside me and so the towing company could get it out. to my amazement the car steering worked fine. there are several complaints on the web about this issue, the key getting stuck in the ignition, the key being removed from the ignition and the car engine continuing to run anyway, and the shutting off while going over tracks and making turns with the saturn ion 2004-2007. please get gmc to fix these issues. what makes me really angry is that the company knows, they simply are avoiding fixing the problems and only focus on the fuel pump problem. somebody is going to get killed sooner or later btw the shutting off issue or the steering wheel issues. i hope you guys look into these issues and demand that gmc fixes them before then. thanks.

On sunday, september 25th, 2011, i was driving on a familiar road in town when all of the warning lights on my vehicle suddenly illuminated and began blinking. the speedometer, fuel gage, temperature gage, and rpm indicator all went down to zero and the message center began saying trac off and pwr str. as this happened, my power steering went out. i pulled over and turned my car off. my car would not turn back on. after about one minute, i was able to start my car again and resume driving as normal. this has happened on four other occasions since the first time, three days ago. the last time it happened i was going around a curve and i almost went into the ditch. in addition, it is also important to note that at 40,000 miles, the vehicle began having the same issue (message center occasionally flashing trac off and pwr str, and the abs and emergency break lights going on). the dealer found that the steering column was shorting out and had to replace the steering column in the vehicle. this leads me to believe that this is an electrical problem...

Driving with traffic, the car dies and the steering gets very hard to turn then battery light comes on. car will restart with no further problems. this will happen at least once a week. took to the dealer they fixed the gas tank leak and other recall parts. this continues to happen almost caused several accidents. do not know if it is the steering or electrical. it doesn't matter what speed your going or if your going straight or turning. please look into this problem. i have had the battery checked the thermostat, checked the fuse box checked. the dealer checked and fixed the other 3 things from recall as stated. the ignition sometimes gets stuck when the steering goes out you can not get the key to do anything until you turn the steering wheel that has no power then you can restart the car. also the car heat gauge never goes above half way so car is not over heating.

Power steering repeatedly goes out. turning the car off and on fixes it for a short time then it happens again. sometimes after 20 minutes of driving and sometimes 30 seconds after restarting. it started as a very intermittent issue but has since gotten worse as time goes on. before this started i had other electrical issues. first the odometer would flash on and off and occasionally flash trunk. later the indicator light for the parking brake would come on without touching the brake. they eventually went away then the steering issue started.

Sometimes as i am driving, the power steering in my 2006 saturn ion stops working and i can't turn the vehicle. if i have to make a turn, i have to try to move the wheel. i have caused major delays and almost been in a few wrecks due to troubles turning the steering wheel. the power steering will not work until i turn the vehicle off and then restart it after a few minutes. the other problem i am having is turning the vehicle on in the morning which i have done the research on and found it is a very common problem for saturn. there is a problem with the wiring components of the vehicle and once i turn the key i have to give it at least 10 minutes before it will turn on. then i can't turn it off until i get to where i need to go or i have to wait again for at least another 10 minutes. this presents a big problem if i have to stop for gas, because i can't turn my car off at the pump or i am stuck at the gas pump for at least 10 minutes and sometimes longer.

According to what i can recall, initially, i was contacted by saturn/gm that i might have defect in my ignition but that they might or might not make a recall on it later but i should have it repaired if i had problems with it. i did have problems so i paid to have it replaced. subsequently, i still had problems starting my car due to locking features. this meant that when i tried to turn the key it would not turnover. fortunately, i learned to continue trying to do this, and eventually it would start. this is a dangerous feature especially to me because i am a woman who travels in blighted neighborhoods and works and lives in them as well. the crime rate in my city of new orleans leads the nations in murders. no one else in my household is willing to drive my car because they know that they can't restart it. lately, the car has a new and even more dangerous problem. if i park it in a certain way, maybe on a slight grade, it will turnover but sounds like there is no connection and it won't start until i physically push the vehicle. at 60 years of age, this is not as easy as i would prefer but it is the only way to get it to start. since this happened to me when i was alone at night making a night deposit at a bank, i am terrorized by what will happen to me should i park somewhere i am too close to other cars that i can't push it at all, or what if it will never start? too bad, because the saturn has been such a great car and it's manual transmission is one of my favorite things. i would not like to lose my entire vehicle, but i would like these features repaired so that they work properly in the future. the approximate date below alludes to when i may have first noticed the first problem. another problem is that i had no idea how to make a complaint, and had i not read an article in the nytimes about saturn, i would not have figured out who to contact at all. thank you.

2006 saturn ion. daughter highway driving returning from college, indicator light on dash came, power steering failed. she pulled over turned vehicle off, turned back on and it drove fine. next day driving at a slower speed the same thing happened. this has happened several times since. contacted authorized saturn service dealer, they said they are aware of similar problems but after taking our vin# indicated gm has not made a recall for our vehicle. to repair this at the dealership we are looking at $300+. i just spent over $200 six months ago on a problem i feel gm should also own up to...the ignition problem with the key sticking in the ignition and not able to turn the vehicle off. i know this electric steering problem is also showing up in other gm vehicles and for what ever reason they are only fixing a select few in a select few states across the country. i have read where there have been 14 accidents resulting in deaths tracing back to this problem. i feel my daughters safety is at risk. i don't understand why an american company would allow the safety of people to be compromised.

I have a 2006 saturn ion quad coup. a few weeks ago i had the fuel pump replaced which was a recall item. last week the ignition switch locked in the on position but the key would come out. i was able to stall the engine to stop it from burning gas. the next day the battery was dead. my extended family has two other ions. a 2003 ion and a 2005 which all have similar problems. the 2005 locked in the on position and the 2003 is having difficulty getting the key out to turn off the car. i believe if a car cannot be shut down this represents a safty issue. further, the odds that 3 out of three ions all have the same ignition issue is eye catching.

Vehicle was unable to be shut off, key was stuck in the ignition, i unhooked the battery and the vehicle was still running. this same vehicle had a recall on the fuel pump module and was leaking gas, had this occured at the same time it would have been very unsafe for the car to have been running the entire time with a gas leak. fortunately i had just repaired the fuel pump module 1 week prior to this issue with the ignition.

Key will get stuck in the ignition and will not come out. it was a safety concern because the vehicle could not be turned off with the key. the only way to turn off the vehicle was to pull the ignition fuse out. there was no improper use of the ignition or the key prior to the event. the dealership replaced the cylinder case and key cylinder. they charged for the repair it was 800 dollars for the repair. the vehicle was out of warranty with only 33000 miles on it. their seems to be alot of complaints/blogs relating to this issue with the ion.

Ignition key broke off in the ignition. had a locksmith remove the broken key. car would not start. locksmith replaced the ignition switch mechanical portion. car will not start. i went through the resetting procedure to reset the security passlock system. it would not reset and had the car towed to the saturn dealership. i have seen a large number of complaints from saturn owners about this same complaint. the only way to be able to get the car running again is to take it to the saturn dealership to be repaired, and they charge a lot of money to do this procedure. they also are very familiar with this problem and the repair of it, because they have many saturns being towed in and doing the repairs on them. due to the large number of problems in this system of the saturns there should be a recall issued for this industry wide known problem.

I currently own a 2006 saturn ion, which i bought brand new in 2005 and has 52000 miles on it. all winter long, during days with temperatures below 40 degrees, my vehicle would not start. upon placing the key into the ignition and turning, the passlock theft deterrant system is activated and locks my car's starter from firing for 10 minutes. the rest of the electical devices in my car work, but the starter becomes locked out for 10 minutes before i can try again. i have read online that this is a common problem with saturn ions. apparently the grease which is located within the ignition system freezes at colder temperatures and thus the ignition switch does not recognize my key. since it does not recognize my key, the anti-theft system locks my car out for the 10 minute lock out period. sometimes i can try 6 times over the course of 1 hour and the car still will not start. this is a dangerous situation on very cold days. i live in the northeast and this past winter we had record snowfall with many days dipping into the 0's, 10's, 20's and 30's. it would be very unfortunate if someone were to die of exposure to the elements since a car has no heat without the engine running. someone could die from being stranded in the cold due to an ignition switch which gm/ saturn could replace for $50. i know i spent many cold days (~5-6 per week) sitting in my freezing cold car for sometimes over an hour just praying that my car would start so i could get some heat. please make gm/ saturn fix this problem so we are no longer left out in the cold!!!!

I have a 2006 saturn ion on with 43,000 miles (a well-maintained vehicle at that). the problem (a common one from everything i've read/heard): recently, i was unable to shut my vehicle off; that's correct... i could not turn my car off. the key was locked in the ignition with the vehicle running. after several hours, my husband and i were able to determine the best course of action (get it to a dealer, disconnect the fuel pump fuse and battery, and spend $451 to have the ignition cylinder completely replaced; the mechanic said it was defective). not being able to shut off a vehicle is a major safety concern (for so many reasons); you can't simply leave a vehicle running, and you certainly can't leave a running vehicle unattended (although some people probably have...how dangerous is that?). *tr

While i was driving the ignition switch on my 2006 saturn ion suddenly turned to the off position causing the car's engine to stop running. this happened twice within a 2 day period. i took the car to the dealer and they replaced the ignition switch. cost was $200.

Car intermittenly wont start. if you stall this car and you are sitting at a stop light, there is a good chance that you wont be able to start this car right away. this could create a dangerous situation. dealer recommended replacing the ignition switch. worked for about a week then the same problems started again. this problem is all over the internet. seems to have something to do with the anti-theft device on the car.
03/30/20106000
When turning ignition off sometimes the switch sticks and does not go into the lock position. the engine does stop. also the electronic door locks do not release and i have to manually press the unlock switch on the door to release them. some things that i have tried are restarting the engine, changing transmission from park to drive and back to park. this works sometimes and then if not i wait for some period of time and wait to hear the doors unlock on their on at which time i am able to place the switch in the lock position and remove the key. this time is from a few seconds to a few minutes and there is no consistency. the dealer has replaced the ignition switch for ~$660.00 and it appeared to help for a couple of days but never resolved the issue. this car has less than 9000 miles on it and this problem started around 6000 miles. i believe that this problem should be classified as a recall as owners are unable to safely lock their cars. your prompt response to this problem will be most welcome. thank you

Driving down the road at about 35 mph i hit a bump (frost heave) and the entire vehicle shut down. no engine, no electrical systems. the vehicle became difficult to steer and the brakes did not operate as well as when the vehicle was running. i forced the car to the side of the road, turned the key off and back on again and restarted the car. *tr

After coming out of carwash i attempted twice to start car. on the third try it started & then key would not turn off w/engine running when i reached my destination. i then proceeded to saturn dealer who fortunately was open and disconnected battery to stop engine. housing, key assembly, & cylinder had to be replaced at the expense of $598.06. dealer could not explain why or how situation occurred so as to prevent recurrence in future. mileage was 40,071. *tr

My 2006 ion has only 24,000 miles and has always been garaged and properly maintained. suddenly, it would not start.....all dash lights on, headlights worked, etc. but engine would not crank. i tried later and it started right up. next day, same routine. when i got it running, i went straight to the saturn dealer and they replaced the ignition switch. my car is out of warranty, so i had to pay. at the time, i did not realize that so many other saturn ion owners were having the same experience. i called saturn customer service and was told there were never any bulletins issued on this problem and there was no way of determining if there were any other complaints about this issue. i've read that replacing the ignition switch doesn't always take care of the problem. i am very concerned about getting stuck somewhere and don't think i should be expected to sit in a cold car, hoping the 10-minute waiting period will allow my car to start. *tr

Occasionally, in the morning, our 2006 saturn ion 2 will not start. the battery checks out, everything lights up on the dash display, but turning the key gets no result. if we remove the key and wait 10 minutes, the car will then start. i recently visited a buick service dept. where the service person told me that this is a common problem, sometimes corrected by ignition switch replacement (which we had done in 2007, under warranty) and if that does not work, there is an electrical control unit which will be replaced. the total for these 2 repairs? in excess of $1,100.00 !! here's the real kicker, he said that this will not necessarily remedy the problem! and g.m. wants another $3 billion in bailout funds?? the funny thing is that the 1994 saturn which my son now has, with over 100,000 miles on it has been one of the most reliable cars we ever owned. the 2006 ion has only 27,000 miles on it and has been back to the dealer again and again over it's life so far. this ignition problem has happened about half a dozen times, so far. only in the morning. *tr

My car would not turn off and my key would not come out. i had the same problem with my vehicle last july, the exact same issue!!!! i immediately called the dealership that i purchased the vehicle from and that corrected this problem last year and was told to bring it in because they would have to make sure that it was in fact the same issue, in which it was. i was told that i would have to pay $40 for the diagnostic test that was ran on the vehicle and that it was going to cost 451.51+tax to have it repaired and that the warranty on the part expired 12 months after the repair for the first incident. the failure has not been corrected. after leaving the dealership, i called the customer service center of the car maker and the only thing that has been done about the failure is that they are going to call me back and that they will do their best to give me a discount on repairs. i just want to know why my vehicle continues to have repeated issues with the ignition system locking up? is the part defective? and if so why hasn't the manufacturer done anything about it? *tr

The vehicle was in great condition, the incident was all a sudden. i could not turn off my car and the key wouldn't come out. because it was a holiday, i had to sit in my vehicle all night until it ran out of gas. i had it towed to the dealership and they replaced my ignition system for $451.51+tax. i had a conversation with a mechanic at a different dealership and was told that the failure was common with my make and model of vehicle. *tr

I have not been able to turn off my ignition or remove my key two separate times. not only that my power steering went out and was only able to be fixed by the dealership. most recently along with the key ignition problem, there is a transmission problem. the first time the ignition was fixed it was under warranty but this time it is not. i have read several blogs of similar complaints from suffering consumers. *tr

 1. no abnormal circumstances, simply turned off at night, and returned in the morning to a car with perfectly working electrical but will not react when turning the car further. 2. it occurs randomly, the consequences are that my car is useless at the time that i need it most, the morning before work. 3. absolutely nothing... it is a saturn ion. the issue is all over the internet, and the fix is complicated, leaving your car on for 10 minutes to get around the pass lock. if your battery survives your car will work afterward. *tr

My car will not always start, it gets a picture of the car with a padlock on the dash but will not even attempt to turn over. it does at least three times a week and today it did it four times alone. it will start in exactly 10 minutes from the first time i tried to start it. so in the mean time my children and i sit there in the cold and wait. or my asthmatic children hopefully do not stop breathing. i have called saturn numerous times and all they tell me is its the ignition housing we can fix it for over 300 dollars but it will go out again in three months, which they say will be the pattern for the life of the car. *tr

2006 saturn ion does not start although all lights come up on dashboard. battery is fine(had it checked) but the starter does not roll over. after 45 minutes (and battery reattached) car started. this occurred twice, once on april 1st 2009 and again nov 21st 2009. probably weather related as both days were fairly cool and preceded by rain. *tr

My 2006 saturn ion is not starting occasionally in cold and wet weather. i called the saturn customer service and they didn't seem to know what the problem is. the rep thought it was a security system issue and wanted me to drive it 2.5 hours away to a saturn dealership, and they might help me out. hmmm, i look online and hundreds, maybe thousands, of people have the same problem. can't they issue a recall? if it is so common and the symptoms are identical why can't they simply tell me what to do? cold and frustrated. *tr

I had to have the ignition switch cylinder replaced on my 2006 saturn ion because the car could not be turn off. while at the dealer i found out that one of the other had the same problem with his saturn vue. talking to the service writer he told me that this was a common problem with these two model of cars. i new something was up when i got charge for 1.5hrs labor when it took less then 40min to take the car replace the part and return it to me. when try to talk to various people at saturn and gm all they waited to say that it was 7 month out of warranty and i did not care about that i wanted to talk about not being able to turn the car off and that i thought it was a safety problem. being from charleston, sc and two people that had the same problem and the service writer comment and the time it took to replace, to me this is probably a bigger problem then just two cars and that saturn should be doing a recall on this. i have working on cars in the past and the car being a manual i was able to stall the car and then disconnect the battery. what i did not have that knowledge or it was an automatic. the gm person did not want to talk about that he just wanted to say it was 7 month out of warranty. i thin that saturn/gm should be forced to recall these car and fix the problem. thank you. *tr

I purchased my brand new saturn ion 2 coupe in june of 2006. in the winter of 2006 i had the ignition to lock up on me and i could not get my key out and it wouldn't turn at all. thankfully my car was under warranty and i had it towed immediately to the nearest saturn dealer. i was told that the ignition housing and its components had to be replaced. the service guy continued to tell me that this has been a common problem. i didn't think anything else about it because mine was fixed. now in oct of 2009 i am faced with the same problem but my key was in the on position and running. the only way to turn my car off was to stall it out because its a five speed and disconnect the battery. my car is no longer under warranty so therefore i am faced with a mechanic bill that is outrageous and i am a college student. i further investigated this problem on the internet to see if there were similar problems like mine and to my surprise there are numerous unsatisfied saturn customers that have had to deal with the same problem. i feel that these ignitions should be investigated and recalled because they have caused so many problems. this is a hazard because this leaves drivers stranded on the side of the road, in an empty parking lot, or in unknown territory. as a female, i was stranded in a parking lot not knowing what to do and scared. i was very disappointed that the saturn customer service man could not help me on the telephone and very unaware of customer safety. *tr

I own a 2006 saturn ion 3. over the past few months i have had the car not start only an hour later to try and it did. i have done research and have found many people have and are having this same problem. when i spoke with the dealership where i bought the car they hadn't heard of this. this has been going on for years and nothing is being done. the safety issue with is my wife has been stuck at work at 3am with the car not starting by herself. we (ion) owners need help with this since the maker of this car isn't doing anything. *tr

I was driving my 2006 saturn ion when the electric power steering went out. there was no warning - the indicator light came on and the power steering was gone. i took the car to the dealer and they said it is an electrical problem and the steering column would need to be replaced. this is a $900 repair since the car is just out of warranty. there are several other complaints related to this same problem. the woman at the dealer says she has seen this several times before and that if you turn off the car it resets the power steering. *tr

2006 saturn ion, mileage 50,000. ignition key will not turn off. dealers nor saturn accepting responsibility. pervasive problem, complaints and no action. costly repair bills, loss of income from lost time at work. imminent safety hazard. recall action should never be initiated only after a disaster occurs. *tr

Steering wheel will not lock. when taking key out of ignition, and opening driver door, it chimes very fast, as if key was still in ignition or lights have been left on. it's as if the key was never removed at all, which means the anti-theft device probably does not engage and the ignition could easily be manipulated and started without the key. i have not contacted my dealer because the car is no longer under warranty and i do not have the money to pay for such a repair. however, i will be turning the car over to gmac once the smartbuy period is up. i also had a problem with the window falling off the track; i had this fixed while under warranty, but at 35,500 miles and i don't drive it that much. *tr

The power steering keeps going out in the car. when this happens it becomes very dangerous to drive. it first started once every couple of days. now it happens every time i turn it on and drive more then 100 yards. l have contact the dealership and they have told me that there is no recall for it. but i have looked online and numerous people have complained about this issue. the car is a lease and they said i am over my warranty even though i only have 36,000 miles in 5 years. *tr

We bought our saturn ion 2 from my husbands sister when it had 10,000 miles on it. that winter ('06) the car began a pattern of not starting when the weather was cold, 20 degrees or less. all the lights, radio, ect. worked fine but the theft lock system locks the ignition for 10 minutes, and this can happen several times in a row! it was fine come spring, but then came winter '07 and the problem only got worse. saturn refuses to help. they think you don't know how to start your car and tell you that they can't replicate the problem or find any record of it in the cars computer. now, after enduring a horrible winter of trying to get the car to start almost every day no matter what temperature, the car is doing it in the late spring! we have had 50's to 70's every morning, yet half the time it still will not start! how can we rely on this car when gm says nothings wrong? *tr

Vehicle initially had trouble starting, made strange sounds, check engine light on,would not go over 25-30mph., followed towtruck to saturn dealer, was told this was a common problem with this make & model, there were thousands of complaints known and that gm was aware of it but had not recalled. turned out that it was the ignition module, switch, coil, harness etc., just under $800 to repair. it's still sitting in the garage. thing is...i purchased this car almost new b/c i had an older car & wanted a new car in case the other quit! wow. who new? power steering also groans and its full of fluid. because of this,(ignition), the key had to be manually pulled out, to get the engine to stop running, all the electrical system remained on, had to disconnect the battery, was told do not know what else may have been damaged as a result, the dealer said the transmission may have been damaged as a result. yet they don't want to recall because of the re-organization? what about my safety? god knows what could have happened if i was on the highway when this happened! *tr

On four occasions, the car failed to start. the lights, horn work, but there is no ignition noise. after waiting at least 15-25 minutes each time, the car eventually started. on april 6th, 2009 as i was coming home on the freeway, the car suddenly lost power, without any type of warning. i was able to cross a lane to get into the slow lane and pull off the road. this happened on a busy stretch of highway at approximately 12 :48pm. the consequences could've been very tragic. i later took the car to a repair shop for a diagnostic test, and the engine failure wasn't recorded in my vehicle's computer system. outrageous. i don't feel safe! *tr

Failure of 2006 saturn ion to start in cold weather, usually +10 fahrenheit or below. this problem occurs without exception when temperature is in that range unless warm are is sufficiently blown into ignition lock to warm it up to the point were it will recognize the key. otherwise the pass lock system engages and must wait about 10 min. to attempt to start the car again. took to dealership and an unrelated problem was fixed(computer reprogramming). both before and after repair i was treated like an idiot by service woman and told in a very discourteous manner that the repair would certainly correct the cold start problem. and if not then it was because mice (or other such creatures) were nesting in my engine compartment and eating the wiring. my wife drive this car to her job in joliet, il which is by no means a 24/7 bastion of safety. i am very concerned for her safety, especially when she must work later into the evenings. i have seen hundreds of complaints regarding this very issue and wonder why there still is no recall of this defective ignition system. *tr

Three times when the temperature has been below 30f i have not been able to start my saturn ion. each time i have had to call on star to get a jump start. all three times the jump start has gotten my card running. i have taken the car to have the battery and starter checked both checked out fine. i see there is a gm service bulletin number : 040845005 and a nhtsa item number : 10007431 established for this complaint. i feel as though gm should recall these vehicles and be responsible for the repairs. *tr

I have a 2006 saturn ion that i purchased in april of 2008. i had trouble from the first day i purchased it. the ion randomly does not start. i've had a mechanic test the battery and said it tested out fine. i had one mechanic tell me it was the starter which would be over $400, another tell me it was the ignition, and another tell me that on only mechanics that had the parts were the dealerships. my car has not started every single day for the last three weeks and randomly since last april. i've missed work due to this issue. the frustrating thing is that my other vehicle that's over 9 years old is more reliable than this saturn. looking online, i've realized how many others are having the same problem. it needs to be recalled!!!! *tr

Key was stuck in the on position and ignition would not turn off. called onstar, the representative called all saturn dealers in my area but all were closed. we figured out which fuse was replaced. took car into saturn dealer the next day and was told i would need a new ignition housing and key code. total repair cost was $500. the car was out of warranty range. i agreed to the fix and called saturn corporate to ask about this and was told i should have bought the extended warranty. corporate representative was rude and offered no help or solution. *tr

Saturn ion will not cold start on cold mornings. the key turns to the on position but will not start the vehicle. it does absolutely nothing in the ignition mode. no crank-nothing. this is the fifth time this event has occurred. fist occurred at 40k. still happens at 49k. when outside temperature rises the car will start normally. the saturn dealership where we purchased this ( our ninth saturn ) is now closed. we were referred to a chevy dealership. can't help wondering how this could help. it is obvious, that despite our brand loyalty, we are now getting the cold shoulder in more ways than one. *tr

I purchased a 2006 saturn ion which intermittently (about once a week) does not start. this is a common problem with saturn ions as evidenced by a basic internet search (see http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/saturn_ignition_lock.html). i'm having to have the ignition switch sensor replaced but the problem remains. this is a very dangerous defect during winter months when the car might randomly not start in an isolated area. the dealer from whom i purchased the vehicle is not willing to make the repair at his expense despite it is a well-known failing of this vehicle. *tr

I purchased a 2006 saturn ion 3 four-door sedan in april 2007. in the past two months, i have had three or four occasions where the car would not start. this typically occurs when the weather is cold, especially when there has been frost overnight. *tr what will happen is that when you first put in the key and turn it to the start position, nothing will happen. there is no crank or engine noise other than a slight buzzing sound sometimes, but the car will not start. if you hold the key in the start position, the security lock icon appears on the dashboard information panel. if you keep trying to turn the car on, it will not work, but if you wait exactly ten minutes from the initial attempt to start the car, it will then turn on. i have tracked this problem down to the ignition switch or the passlock security system on the car. many drivers of 2003-2006 saturn ion vehicles are complaining of this issue, and it is very clearly a faulty system that will not be fixed by a simple part replacement. *tr

I purchased my '06 saturn ion in june '06. just last week, i parked my car at a local store and when i attempted to turn off the ignition, the key wouldn't budge. the ignition had locked up. after several attempts, i contacted my local saturn dealership and they told me i would need to bring the car in immediately to be able to turn off the engine. once i arrived at the dealership, they told me the situation and how they can fix it at a cost of $300+. with no other options, i agreed and they promptly fixed it within the hour. however, as i paid my bill i asked the service representative what the cause of the ignition lock was and he said it was a faulty part from saturn and that it is a common problem. to me, that means saturn should be taking care of the charges and these faulty parts!! there should be a recall and a replacement made by saturn!! i have had two saturns and have always had good experiences and was very disappointed with how they handled this faulty situation! and to top it off, on my receipt, parts were less than $40 so labor was hundreds of dollars for less than 1 hour of work for their own faulty part. unreal! *tr

I have a 2006 saturn ion. the car has been running great. i got into my vehicle after work, and started the car. i stopped at a local gas station to get gas, and the key would not turn off. i had to pump my gas with the car running, which is an extreme hazard to myself and others around me. i continued to jiggle the key trying to get it to move, and it would not budge. i drove the vehicle home, and contact my saturn dealership to see if i could get this worked on. they reported that it would be over a week before they could get to it. the key continues to be jammed, the doors won't lock, and anyone could steal my car at anytime. i have researched this on the internet, and seems to me a major problem with saturn cars. why isn't this a recall?? *tr

Going to a dinner at mothers house - started the car just fine - arrived at destination - put the car into park went to turn it off - key would not turn it was stuck in the 'on' position and not moving period...had to pull the fuse out for the ignition - aaa wouldn't come out on a sunday evening - nowhere in northwest arkansas to drive the car to be looked at because everywhere is closed - now - even though my car is off the key is still in it, and i have to essentially put a plastic 'key' into a fitting underneath/inside the steering wheel to turn off and start my car. anyone can walk by and try to break into my car because they see keys in the ignition - if i didn't have the friend that new something about cars my car would have overheated and probably caught on fire, because no one would come out and help me. ...ridiculous! *tr

Key cannot be removed from ignition after car is turned off. have returned to the dealership 4 times for this problem. each time they lubricate the system but it does not fix the problem. it began less than 6 months after we purchased the vehicle and still persists today. we cannot take any more time off from work to take it into the shop to be told they will not replace the ignition system or the transmission/gear shift mechanism that may be the actual problem. in addition, in the first 18 months we've owned the vehicle, the air conditioning coolant has run out and they cannot locate the leak, and the sunroof broke. finally, on one occasion the car went over a bump at approximately 30 mph and the electrical system acted as though the car had a wreck, cutting the motor and showing the airbag had deployed when it had not. after a few minutes, the car started up just fine with no adverse affects. the dealer says they've never heard of such a thing and can't think of how/why it happened. *jb

While visiting atlanta on business i rented a 2006 saturn ion and left the lights on in the hotel parking lot. since i did not know the battery was dead, and i was not getting any response from the remote door opener, i opened the door with the key, closed the door and proceeded to start the car. after failed attempt to start the car, i attempted to remove the key from the ignition and was unable to do so. since there was no electrical power in the car, i was also locked in the car with no way of getting out. all doors were locked with no manual means to open internally. luckily for me colleagues were around and were able to give me a boost that allowed the electrical power to return to the car and i was able to remove the key from the ignition and electrical current return the power doors and i was able to get out of the car. i found this defect to be a potential hazard for any car in an accident where the power from the car gets cut off. had their been a fire, or below freezing or extreme heat conditions, this could have been dangerous. hopefully this incident is isolated but i felt it was important to report. *nm

 1. for about a year before the incident, my key on my vehicle would get stuck in the ignition sometimes (just a sticking feeling, nothing major). a couple weeks ago, i put the key in the ignition and it would not come out. the car wouldn't turn off b/c the key was completely stuck. when i researched the problem, i found out many people have had this same problem with their newer saturn ions. i was upset b/c i bought this car new in 2006 and my warranty had just expired. saturn would not pay for the repair, even though they could not explain why the ignition cylinder broke and several employees admitted this was a very common problem. 2. the failure was the ignition cylinder, which broke after only having the car for 3 years-i took auto shop, so i know not to put too many keys on my key ring. a part should not break that soon on a 3-year old car. i noticed the key getting slightly stuck every few weeks or so. the day my key got stuck, the consequence was that i was basically hostage to my car-i could not turn off my car, & could not go to work and leave my car on the street. it was unsafe for me to drive around until i ran out of gas on the side of the road. so, i had to agree to the repair, even though saturn refused to pay for it. 3. the ignition cylinder was replaced and it cost me $250. (another $100 for a day's missed work) *i greatly hope you recall this defective item. i called the saturn national hotline and they would not help in any way and said the recall process takes a long time and until then, customers would have to pay for the repairs to this part. i only had to google this issue and found countless people with 1-3 year old saturns who were stuck with this same problem. i am a 33-year old student who cares for my brother who's disabled. i do not have this kind of money. it scares me to think about what i would have done had i been out in an unfamiliar road/area and been unable to turn off my car. :/ thanks very much for your time. *tr

Once a saturn vehicle (mostly ions) are exposed to cold temperatures at or approaching 32 degress f for several hours (work / sleep) when the engine is not running the car will not start. it is a failure in the ignition switch. saturn admitted this in 2005 when i had my 2004 model ignition switch replaced. but now my 2006 model is doing the same thing and the key will also get stuck in the ignition while the car is still running. this is a big problem you can see comments at http://www.64.4.38.249/att/getattachment.aspx?file=... 11/24/2008360001
This is the second complaint i have filed on my 2006 saturn ion. i have been tracking a problem i have been having with it not starting in the morning. the problem is with the passlock system that allows fuel to pass to the engine, a so called anti theft deterrent. this morning i sat in my car in the driveway for 30 minutes waiting for the system to reset itself. looking at various websites, gm has had this problem repeatedly for quite some time. i have contacted saturn corporation, received assistance from a customer service rep, taken my car to the nearest dealership (70 miles away) and the dealership can't duplicate the problem and says they have never heard of this problem before. i took over 20 pages of documentation with me showing thousands of gm customers that are experiencing this same problem. the dealership wouldn't even look at the paperwork. something needs to be done about this issue. my car is only 2 years old. i was sold a defective product, gm knows the passlock system does not work properly but continues to treat their customers like they are idiots. it is dangerous to be stranded in a car that will not start with children in the car and ridiculous to have a car dictate when it will start. *tr

I have a 2006 ion, with around 38,000 miles o it. last week when i left work later in the evening and turned the key in the ignition, the lights and radio came on, but the car did not start. i thought i needed roadside assistance but when i tried to start the car again when i was on the phone with them the car then started, which was about 15 minutes later. to make a long story short i took it to my saturn dealer today (saturn of monroeville) and was told this is a known issue with the internal security system in the ions. they had to replace the ignition switch and reprogram the internal security code. if this is a known issue, why isn't a recall issue? what consistitutes an issue that warrants a recall? if it's safety related and argument could be made that if my car doesn't start it or even shuts down (not sure of the extent of what could have happened) that is definitely a security issue. *tr

I purchased a 2006 saturn ion in june of 2005. over the course of the last six to eight months, i have been noticing a problem with the key being stuck in the ignition. the key would require a slight jiggling in order to be drawn from the ignition. about two and a half weeks ago, the key became stuck in a position where it could not be turned off at all thus resulting in the inability of the engine to shut off. the car was still operable, but it would not shut off. i contacted my saturn dealership who during a particularly acute display of poor customer service, advised that i would require new parts for my vehicle which would result in a cost of nearly $500.00. the parts included ignition cylinder , ignition housing, key and key coding. after receiving the repair, my key continues to get stuck in the ignition. although the car will turn on and off, the key will either come out with repetitious jiggling or will not come out at all. many a day, i've had to leave my car with the key in the ignition because i simply did not have the time to fiddle with it. the time required to dislodge the key averages to about 15 minutes. the key fails to come out of the ignition. as i am still making car payments, this is very dangerous situation to be in. the keys presence in the car establishes it as a target for theft. i am a woman who must commute a half hour to and from work in a large metropolitan area. *tr

I have an 06 saturn ion that has had the ignition switch go out on it right as we have no warranty on it, of course. we contacted saturn head office and tried to explain to them that there seems to be a need for a recall on this vehicle. not only has the ignition switch gone out the window to the driver side no longer will go up. we owned the car only two days when the same window fell off the track for no reason and they had to fix it. my father also owns the same year make and model car and the window on his driver side also went out just a couple of months ago. there seems to be several recurring issues with this vehicle that i see not only one person is having. they recalled the older model of this car for the same problem with the ignition. this vehicle is too new to have this many incidents occur. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 saturn ion. while driving 1-50 mph in wet, slippery, or icy roads, the tires would spin out and cause the vehicle to lose control and the throttle power failed for 5-8 seconds. in november of 2007, the dealer stated that they could not duplicate the failure; however, they stated that the wiring harness needed to be replaced due to the air conditioner. after it snowed, the vehicle also began to spin and lose power while driving uphill and then slid back down. on february 13, 2008, the dealer stated that the failure was due to the fuel regulator and kept the vehicle for over three weeks. an unauthorized driver at the dealer crashed the vehicle into a ditch with two feet of water, causing water to enter the headlights. the contact has 56 photos available. he was advised that his vehicle does not qualify for the lemon law. the vin, engine size, number of cylinders, transmission type, powertrain, and fuel type were unknown. the current mileage was 38,200 and failure mileage was 11,000.

I had an electrical problem with my car that i believe is a flaw in the design of the car. first my automatic door locks stopped working and a service vehicle light came on. i took the car to the dealer. they replace a blown fuse. two to three days later the same problem occurred again. i just did not have time to take the car in again to have a blown fuse replaced again. approximately a month later it had gotten to the point that my car would not start. i had the car towed to the dealer. they finally (after having my car for a day and a half) figured out what was wrong with the car. the driver's door has a wire inside it for the automatic locks. rolling the driver's side window up and down caused the wire to chaffe and become bare. the wire would touch something metal in the door and blow the fuse. this, in my opinion, could cause a fire hazard or other safety issues. *jb
