My ignation switch has been replaced 3 times in 4 years, costing $350.00 every time. it keeps going out. now my fuel pump is leaking. i looked up and found 3 different website showing recalls on the fuel pump for my year, make, and model of my car. saftycar.gov, motortrend.com, and usedcars.com. i call both gm and saturn number which were provided and they tell me there no recalls for my vechicale. now it going to cost $600 to fix my problem. the sad thing is i have to fix it or my car can blow up. i urge people not to buy saturn they are no good.

The fuel pump on my 2006 ion with only 43,500 miles needs a new fuel pump do to failure that is covered under gm recall 09226 in certain states. i have been told by a gm service department that i should not drive the car until it is fixed since this issue is a fire hazard. i have requested the repair, quoted at over $1000, to be covered in full due to the fact that this failure is the exact issue described in the recall, but the dealer and gm do not seem concerned about potentially losing all of my business for repairs and future vehicle purchases.

2006 ion. strong gas smell developed over a week in sept 2011. an independent technician found gas leaking from top of tank. research lead me to nhtsa campaign id number: 09v419000. gm performed the recall on only 53k cars in az and nv in oct 2009. seems the fuel pump module connections are made of plastic and crack with heat and road vibration. however, a call to saturn revealed they are hiding behind a vin specific recall and that the other thousands of ions with this serious safety-defect are only covered by gm for 10 yr/120k mile special coverage warranty extended to this defective part. had saturn/gm informed me my car might burst into flames back in feb 2010, when they were to notify the 53k owners in az and nv, i would have had this repair done asap as i would still be under their special coverage limitation. i am angered and outraged that gm seems to take the position of let's wait until the car becomes a death-trap before we tell people they might be in danger and replace the defective parts. with no notification, i continued to drive my ion. now that the car actually has became life-threatening, i am not covered by gm's special coverage. my ion does not qualify because i am over this artificial limit if 120k miles. all vehicles with this defective part should have been notified. this is criminally negligent. bet you my mileage was below this artificial limit in february 2010. because the problem didn't show up until after 200+ days of over 90 degree days in east texas - i have to pay $600 to repair their obvious defect. the repair costs are unfair, but the safety issue screams for justice. i guess someone's family will have to die in a tragic fireball before someone takes gm to task for this seriously dangerous fuel system defect.

Began experiencing a strong odor of raw gas and fumes in august of 2011. i scheduled an appointment with my local repair facility to have the problem evaluated. upon raising the vehicle and doing a visual inspection of the fuel system, run marks from gasoline could be seen coming down from the top of the tank. an evap test was performed as well and smoke could be seen rising out of the tank area. the tank is plastic and no visual cracks could be seen. my technician felt this was unusual at such low mileage. after further digging the technician discovered a recall on the fuel pump module for my year, make and model. i was advised to return to the dealer to see if it was covered which i did. i found out that my vehicle did not fall under the factory recall. i returned to my regular mechanic to have the problem resolved. once the tank was lowered another evap test was performed. the test revealed that the fuel supply lines coming off the fuel pump sending unit were leaking. this was were the two hoses were press fitted to the sending unit from the factory. the only means of correcting was to replace the entire fuel pump module. i had the repair completed using an oe fuel pump module. i feel after reading the parameters set forth under this recall that my vehicle should have been repaired under this recall. i urge nhtsa to once again evaluate this defect. in my opinion these defective parts were used on more vehicles than initially stated. this is a severe safety issue and has the potential for serious injury.

Initial signs were a stong smell of fuel inside and outside of the vehicle, and longer crank times when starting. this was filling our garage with a very strong fuel odor. took it to dealer to diagnose, and they determined that there was a crack in the fuel pump module and recommend replacing at a cost of $650. the fuel pump module is a plastic case that sits on top of the fuel tank. it is not accessable unless you take the fuel tank off. we are just finishing a summer of record setting heat. looking online it has cracked for people in hot climates. there is a recall for a problem that sounds very similar, gm recall number 090226. our car is not covered by this because it is not located in az or nv

I was smelling gasoline in my garage and took my car to my local gm dealer. they confirmed that it was a cracked fuel pump in my 2006 saturn ion redline. this was a recall (nhtsa recall id number: 09v419000), but did not include my vin number, so it cost me $576 out of pocket for this repair. the recall needs to be expanded

Vehicle started to have a strong odor of gasoline, i checked with my dealership about my warranty and it expired june 2011. i took the car to local repair shop as it was unsafe to drive. they discovered the fuel pump module was leaking fuel (as in bubbling around the top of the tank). the vehicle was repaired although the first two parts shipped in were broken upon arrival at the shop. i was provided with a copy of the special coverage bulletin #09275a addressing this exact failure. my vin falls within the parameters but my location (virginia) does not. the approved states all appear to be southern, hot, states. the recent temps in northern virginia/ dc area has been very hot over the last two months. i feel that gm should reimburse me for the repair costs or at least the cost of the parts.

My 2006 saturn ion, has started to have a distinct overwhelming fuel smell and gas can be noticed under the car from a leak. it is also harder to start and may take 2 times of turning the ignition. i have taken my car to an independent repair shop and was told the fuel pump which connects to the top of the fuel tank is leaking and i will need a new fuel pump assembly and fuel filter. there is a very specific recall for this issue on gm vehicles in warm weather states, but gm is not honoring this defect in all states. it has been an unseasonably hot summer, so all states have hot weather. gm told me this is vin specific, but if this is a defect on a part, why isn't it part specific. my car is leaking gas and could start a fire at any moment and yet gm does not see this as an issue. many other saturn/gm owners have posted about this default and have been denied any coverage by gm. how can this not be an issue for every state, when owners in every state that own a saturn or other gm model are having the same issue? i am taking my saturn to a gm dealership, and have to have them deam this as a defect. so, the company that will loose money if they have to fix this for free is determining if this is an item that qualifies? this is a conflict of interest and a recall should be posted for the safety of all gm owners.

I have a 2006 saturn ion 2. i was smelling gas. i took it to get repaired at around 119k miles and was told it was just my exhaust. i got a hole repaired in my exhaust and smelled gas just every once in awhile. now gas is leaking from my fuel pump because there is a large hole. the independent repair shop stated that it had been cracked prior to the size of the crack now. i called saturn after finding out about a recall and now they will not repair it.

Our 2006 saturn ion has a major leak in the fuel pump reservoir. the leak is defined in nhtsa campaign id number 09v419000 and is listed as a recall 09226a. dealer is confirming this is the problem our vehicle has, but gm says this as a 'special policy' repair bulletin number 09275 and not a recall 09226a. gm is refusing to fix the issue because our vehicle has a branded title as salvage. they will repair a salvage titled vehicle under a 'recall' but not on a 'special policy' extension. dealer stated the issue is the leaky fuel pump and not cuased by any other damage. apparently there are a lot of 2006 saturn ion's with the same issue that gm has slid around fixing because they didn't make it a recall, but a special policy and this is a fuel leak on the pump and a major safety issue due to an admitted faulty component.

There was a special policy that involved a gm recall of 53,000 chevy cobalt, pontiac g5 and saturn ion models for a fuel leak because of a faulty modular reservoir assembly on the fuel pump module that cracks. within that recall were specifically 2006 and 2007 saturn ions. the recall included alabama, arkansas, california, florida, georgia, hawaii, louisiana, mississippi, north carolina, new mexico, oklahoma, south carolina, tennessee, and texas. this is exactly what happened to my car. i was driving and i gradually smelled gasoline. an independent mechanic confirmed there was a gas leak. this was a big safety concern because the car could have exploded if someone threw a lit cigarette out of the window from another car while i was driving on the highway. i brought the car to the chevy dealership and the service department confirmed it was the fuel pump module and that my vin wasn't covered under the recall. i called saturn to complain about it. then they called the dealership and then saturn called me back and told me that based on the information they have gathered, it was not a defect. a fuel pump module typically lasts the life of the car and doesn't crack. this was clearly a defective part, especially considering that they acknowledged the defect in 53,000 other 2006 saturn ions. saturn should clearly compensate me for this repair and acknowledge that this is a much wider safety issue than they originally openly admitted to.

Over the nine months that i drove the vehicle after purchase, a strong smell of gasoline continually entered the cabin while the car was being operated and could be smelled outside of the vehicle as well. the car also gradually became harder to start, turning longer than normal. the odor continued to get stronger and more frequent until i discovered via an online search that there had been a recall involving the fuel pump cracking for the same model and year in arizona and nevada. i called saturn to verify that my vehicle was not involved in that recall since i was not the original owner. i took the car to be fixed where after an inspection of the fuel system where a leak was found coming from the top of the tank, it was determined that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced. the final cost for an aftermarket pump, initial inspection, and labor came to $657 dollars. i had a pre-purchase inspection on the vehicle before purchasing. the mechanic noted that there was a fuel stain on the tank, but he believed it to be inactive and leftover from possible prior work done on vehicle. so pump failure may have began earlier than the stated mileage.

When i first got my 2006 saturn ion, i was the first and only owner bought it from the saturn dealership with less than a 50 miles on the car. before 30 days of owning the automobile it quit on me in the middle of busy intersection endangering myself and my children. i took it to the dealership where they have claimed to fix the ignition switch on the automobile, several weeks later the same problem acured they then replaced the key. then months later my alarm started going off spontaneously, the battery went dead on the automible which i have replaced 3 times, the iginition switch went out again i had to replace that myself out of pocket in march of 2009. still after replacing the battery, getting the iginition switch fixed twice, and having the electrical parts looked at the car still continues to have the same problems. if i get gas why the car is not crancked it will not crank back up for hours!!! it will go dead while i'm driving on a freeway does this all the time! this saturn ion has caused me nothing but money and problems since i've had it i purchased a additional warranty on the automobile when i bought it and they refuse to replace or fix any of the work on the automobile when i only have gotten my car serviced with saturn they do all of my oil changes, and maintenance and charge me a arm and leg to maintain the maintenance on the automobile. i have had to pay so much money on this automobile for maintanenece that should not even be a issue at this time my car doesn't even have 84k on it yet. the engine seems to shake when the car sits still, the car quits if the engine is not running when you get fuel, the car quits at red lights, the car power steering gets real hard to turn when you try to turn the steering wheel, the saturn ion is definetly a dud! you can smell gas sometimes coming from this automobile, and the battery is in the trunk of the car...so when it rainsmy battery goes go dead. the defects on this automobi;le will kill someone one day.

Nhtsa campaign id number: 09v419000. fuel leakage. i had the same exact problem with my 2006 saturn ion but yet it is not covered under the recall due to it being registered in colorado. i had to replace the part myself at $400. i saved the original fuel pump just in case you decide to add colorado to the recall list for this. why would the same exact problem that is listed in the recall not be covered due to a different state. i think this is unfair.

I smelled gasoline after i would exit the vehicle since i bought it in sept. of 2009. investigated the cause and found gasoline coming down the side of the gas tank. removed gas tank, and found that the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly was cracked and leaking fuel. i did some research and found that in oct. of 2009 there was a recall for certain model year 2006 chevrolet cobalt and saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona and nevada; and model year 2007 chevrolet cobalt, pontiac g5 and saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona california, florida, nevada and texas. my car is a 2006 but the car was originally sold in the state of fl and i purchased the car from a saturn dealer in nc but they had purchased it at an auction in fl earlier in the 2009 year. by build date my car was very close to being a 2007. i contacted gm and they informed me that my car was not covered by this recall. an oem fuel pump assembly was purchased and installed by myself.

The past month my car has gotten harder to start. nov. 2 i started smelling gas. i had assumed i was smelling exhaust prior to this and planned on checking for a vacuum leak, so i was driving with my windows down. the gas smell got stronger and worse after a 186 mile drive home. i googled the problem and read of the same symptoms resulting from a cracked hose attached to the fuel pump. after work i looked under the hood at home and didn't see anything. went to dinner and back in a separate car. after being gone 1.5 hours we could smell gas as soon as we got out of the car. looking underneath there was a softball size puddle of fuel underneath the gas tank/fuel pump and fuel all over the backend of my car. i took it to the dealership that night. the next morning the mechanic calls and says i need a new fuel pump because the hose is cracked and it's all one assembly. with that amount of fuel leaking it seems very hazardous to me. i see a recall posted oct. 28th but it does not include texas for 2006. it does include texas for 2007 though. i think i had fuel leaking for a few weeks before it was obvious. these need to be fixed before someone is hurt. please extend the recall to texas. *tr

I have been having starting problems with my car (2006 saturn ion) and smelling gasoline. it turns out the hose connected to the fuel pump was cracked and leaking gas. the mechanic said that this is a safety issue and should be recalled. he feels that the one hose is not connected and harnessed properly and the vibration to the hose eventually caused the crack. i googled saturn 2006 ion fuel leak and several other people have had the same issue. what is also the major problem here is that the hose is configured with the fuel pump itself. so, the entire mechanism had to be replaced. it cost me 700.00 for a cracked hose because the fuel pump had to be replaced and my car only is 46,000 miles. this is a major safety issue. i drove for 2 weeks with a car that was leaking fuel. saturn must know about this and is waiting for the same situation to happen, but for the car to blow up instead. *tr

Emissions light would come on, smell of gasoline, car would suddenly reduce to half power while driving. would have to pull over and get out, remove the gas cap, let the fumes out, and car would restore to normal power. this went on for a year and one half. saturn agency could not find the problem. finally saturn did some sort of bypass and problem ceased but car drove sluggishly. few months passed without any problem.two weeks ago strong odor of gasoline. the fuel pump was leaking and was replaced. car has significantly more power with new fuel pump however this week the emissions light came on again and has stayed on but no loss of power experienced as of yet. slight odor of gasoline again. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 saturn ion. the vehicle has a very strong gasoline smell inside the passenger compartment and outside as well. there is also a fuel leakage in the vehicle. the contact is a mechanic and stated that the leak originated from the fuel tank. he is concerned that the leak could cause a potential fire hazard. ever since the leak occurred, the vehicle now has to be cranked for a while before the engine starts. the vehicle has not been taken to any dealer; however, the manufacturer was notified. the current and failure mileages were 51,000. phone interview (august 4, 09): mr. hornback repaired the fule pump himself. he said that one of the nipples on the fuel module had cracked. mr. hornback inserted a brass pipe into the broken nipple and epoxy it in place. he agreed to email me pictures of the fuel pump module. he believes that the cracked nipple was for the fuel 'return' side.

Took my 06 saturn into the dealer due to stalling. was told by the mech. that the fuel pump was leaking that the plastic elbow had a crack in it due to the road vibration my concern is that tis is a line that is under appos 20psi located above the exhaust pipe and directly under the back seat. if gas is being sprayed out over the exhaust a spark is all that is missing to have a rolling flame thrower. in my simple mind this part should not be prone to cracking because of normal driving. i still remember the pinto i hope some one will take action before something happens think you for your time in this matter. *tr

We smelled a very strong fuel odor- very profound, obvious, confirmed by technician at lockhart cadillac, greenwood, in. there is a current recall out, recall number 09v41900. this recall is for a faulty fuel pump plastic assembly that cracks in extremely high temperatures and includes several western and southern or otherwise traditional hot weather states. gm knows it is a problem but because i live in indiana they would not cover the repair bill. the midwest has experienced on of the hottest summers on record which is what causes this problem. i believe that the midwestern states should be added since this is a potentially fatal problem if not repaired quickly. as you full well know a simple ignition source, a spark or cigarette butt, could set this off. it would be in everyone's best interest to remedy this problem for owners in the midwest. *tr

Recently i started smelling gas around my vehicle and inside my vehicle after it had been sitting for awhile. then the check gas cap light came on along with the check engine light, i also noticed the vehicle has a little trouble starting. i found nhtsa campaign id number 09v419000 and recall 09226 both of which explain my issue. my vin number is included in the list of affected vehicles in the recall but because my vehicle was not originally sold or currently registered in one of the state listed it is not included in the recall. how can living in one state and not another influence a recall? since there is potential for a fire i can't wait to get this fixed and will have to pay for the parts and labor on my own. *tr

Recently, i have noticed a strong odor of gasoline in and around the car. i searched the fuel lines to see if there was a leak and there was not. i did some research online and found the gm recall for the fuel pump of this vehicle. the nhtsa campaign number is 09v419000. i contacted gm and gave them my vin to see if my car was one of the affected. they told me it was not. i see that the recall includes 2006 saturn ions in north carolina, but apparently my car is not part of the recall. the issue with my car is exactly the same listed in the recall. i have done more research and have found over 80 other complaints from other saturn ion owners stating that their cars are doing exactly the same thing. however, their cars are not included in the recall either. i believe this issue affects a majority of these model cars, not just the ones listed in the recall sent out by gm. *tr

We took our vehicle 2006 saturn ion 2 with 61k miles, in for an oil change on 10/15/2009 to the saturn dealership. the dealership has been the only mechanic to perform any service to the vehicle since we purchased the vehicle on 01/24/2006 from the same saturn of bakersfield dealership. we take the vehicle in for regular service and have the maintenance records of the vehicle. we also have subscribed to onstar, which sends monthly diagnostic reports of the engine and transmission, emissions, air bag system, remaining oil life ect. after this oil check i noticed a very strong odor of gasoline in the cab of the vehicle and outside the car, but mostly inside the cab. the fumes are flammable. when saturn service technician looked at the vehicle, he stated on invoice: cust states strong fuel odor can be smelled in and out of vehicle. vehicle was in for lof on 10/21/09. inspect vehicle found fuel pump leaking from crack in fuel pump at hose fitting, no physical damage found. normal movement and rough roads may have led to failure. recommended replacing fuel pump estimate to replace part 19168894 565.00 parts 304.35 plus tax 25.11 plus labor 235.00 equals 564.46 i believe this to be a similar issue as the 2004 ions. how can a vehicle driven back and forth to work, that is maintained, be failing in this manner? the vehicle is not driven on rough roads mainly a freeway ca hwy 99.how could a 3 1/2 year old car be falling apart and failing due to normal movement? we are out of warranty, therefore we had to pay to have this corrected. we do have a policy in our insurance that will cover, but we will have to pay a higher deductible. saturn could not fix the vehicle at that time, we asked if it was safe to drive, they stated keep the windows cracked and don't park in the garage due to vapors are flammable. it is scheduled to be repaired 10/26/09. saturn's the company, defective parts should be recalled. this is unsafe. a rocket on wheels as my wife says. *tr

The 2006 saturn ion ignition locked on with the car running in park. this seems to be a chronic problem with saturn ions. the vehicle can not be turned off and the key can not be removed. it gets completely locked in place. the vehicle remains running, wasting gas and could be a safety hazard if something else is happening and the vehicle must be shut off quickly and can't. the only way to shut the vehicle off is to disconnect the battery and pull an ignition fuse. the key remains locked in place. i'm putting this under 'fuel system-other' because the ignition turns the fuel system on and off. i originally parked and tried to shut the vehicle off because i smelled fuel. luckily it was coming from somewhere else and was just in the air. but it was scary to smell fuel and not be able to shut the vehicle off. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 saturn ion. while driving 1-50 mph in wet, slippery, or icy roads, the tires would spin out and cause the vehicle to lose control and the throttle power failed for 5-8 seconds. in november of 2007, the dealer stated that they could not duplicate the failure; however, they stated that the wiring harness needed to be replaced due to the air conditioner. after it snowed, the vehicle also began to spin and lose power while driving uphill and then slid back down. on february 13, 2008, the dealer stated that the failure was due to the fuel regulator and kept the vehicle for over three weeks. an unauthorized driver at the dealer crashed the vehicle into a ditch with two feet of water, causing water to enter the headlights. the contact has 56 photos available. he was advised that his vehicle does not qualify for the lemon law. the vin, engine size, number of cylinders, transmission type, powertrain, and fuel type were unknown. the current mileage was 38,200 and failure mileage was 11,000.
