My key became stuck in the ignition and would not turn while the car was still running. i had to pull the fuel injector fuse and disconnect my battery to turn the car off. in researching this problem online, i've found that tons of other saturn owners have encountered this same problem with their ignition cylinders. i believe since this is such an expensive and common problem, that there should be a recall made on this part.

My car will not start when it is cold it has to warm up before it will start right up now when it is warm out side not cold it starts right up. then my key got stuck in the on position and could not cut the car off. had to look on google for other similar problems to find out how to get the car to turn off.

Key locks up in ignition and will not turn to off position. key is stuck and will not release from ignition. to get key out car must be turned to on position and back off again. friends of ours also had a saturn ion from 2005 and they had the same issue. the key would become stuck in the ignition and they would have to start the car and turn it off (sometimes several times) to get the key out. our worry is that the problem will become more extreme and dangerous where we cannot turn the car off (as i have read in other complaints) as well as not being able to eventually free the key. this is a defect that needs to be recalled and fixed!

Put the key in and now it will not shut off....had to pull fuse...key will not turn back and can not get it out

When i try to take out my key i can not remove it. i am able to turn off the motor, but then the key is stuck in that position and i can not remove it. i am concern that they key could stick in the position where the car is still running or that it won't come out at all.. i sometimes have to stay in my car for 2-3 minutes, so that i can remove the key. i know i can remove the key when the car makes a certain sound. it is a soft click, as if something is released. it sounds similar to the when you unlock your car doors with the automatic switch, but quieter. the key sticks 1-2 times/week at least. (i use my car twice a day, to and from work, this has been going on since i purchased the car several years ago. at the time it had maybe 40,000 miles. now it has 82000 miles.

This vehicle was purchased brand new and driven very little. protected in closed in garage. drove to colorado springs for vacation and went to visit relatives. parked vehicle in front of relative home and the key couldn't be turned to shut off the car. fortunately there was a neighbor of my relatives that new how to shut it off by disconnecting the battery cables. to start the car the cables had to be hooked back up. drove to ferguson buick gmc in colorado springs and they checked it. the tumbler came apart, won't turn off , replaced ignition lock. was charged for housing kit (15857948), code cyl, cylinder kit (20869121), labor and cost of parts totalled $614.22. with only 16, 607 miles from 2006 to 2012 this should not have happened. today, november 30, 2012, i went to drive my vehicle and when i started the engine all the lights on the dash and message about steering off trac keeps flashing and it said something about steering fluid, brakes and the lights were going crazy. i am afraid to drive it so i drove it back into my garage. couldn't drive it like that. now what is wrong. this vehilce has been paid for since 2008 and only has 19, 000 miles on it. my husband bought me this vehicle as a surprise and little did he know he would get pancreatic cancer the following year. he wanted me to have a dependable extra vehicle. i cannot keep paying money to fix a vehicle that i am afraid to drive. may get stranded somewhere. i wouldn't feel in good conscious to even sell it to anyone. not worth what he paid for it.

The key is stuck in the on position in the ignition switch and will not come out. this has happened twice. had it repaired on 08/28/2012 and happened again on 10/20/2012.

I have had a slight problem with my saturn ion since i have purchased it from my dealership. the key will get stuck every other time i have tried to shut it off. it was a minor inconvenience at the most. but yesterday i had my key get stuck while the vehicle was running! i had to have the battery disconnected and pull a fuse just to get it to shut off. i looked online for hours and hours and found out it is most likely the ignition lock cylinder. there were so many complaints on the saturn ions doing this i was shocked that a recall has not been issued. i am frustrated at the dealsership saying it will be $90 just to look at it, and then they will give me an estimate. online i have seen that the average cost paid to have this fixed is $300-$500. why should i have to spend more of my hard earned money if this is clearly the manufacturers fault? if nothing is done about this i will have lost all faith in people.

My car won't start due to ignition switch malfunction. i've replaced ignition switch as suggested by owner's manual to no avail, problem persists. i've also taken the car for service to a certified gm/saturn service center (dealer service). the car battery and starter motor are in good condition. only after many, many, attempts to start the car it'll eventually turn on. once car is turn off, for example stopping at gas station for gas, problem manifests itself again, car won't start. there are numerous accounts of this problem (2006 saturn ion ignition switch malfunction) found by doing an online (internet) search. please help!

In 2008 my key was stuck in the ignition not allowing my car to shut off. after several hours in the blazing son with my son, a tow truck came and had to disconnect my battery and take out the ignition relay just to get my car to stop running. my car almost over heated and ran out most my gas.the ignition cylinder and switch was replaced costing over seven hundred dollars. now in 2012 the same thing has happened again. i was quoted another six hundred and eighty dollars to replace it again. since i do not have the funds to replace such a costly unexpected repair i am forced to live with a car that i can not drive. my key is stuck in the ignition not allowing me to lock my doors which leaves my car open for anyone to destroy it or rob it. since you can only access the battery by the truck and the trunk can only be opened by key or automatic key ring. i can no longer access my battery to hook it back up. this is because the only other way to get to open the trunk is by having the seats down in the back and climbing through the trunk to open it. even if someone else does open the trunk. connecting the battery and disconnecting the battery in hundred degree weather is not acceptable. since being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder i can no longer due such thing. if connected i can start my vehicle. actually after replacing the ignition relay it starts itself. i see online that the ignition or its parts is an ongoing problem with my vehicle. when is it going to become a recall?
08/11/201285000
My key is locked in the ignition in the on position, and will not turn to off, the only way to turn off the vehicle is to stall it , and disconnect the battery wires to keep the battery from draining down too much,
08/08/201272000
The ignition lock cylinder in my vehicle seized up - my car was running, and i was unable to turn the key or turn the car off, though i can remove the key and the car stays running. the key is still stuck to on and the only way i'm able to turn the car off is to stall it (manual transmission) and pull the battery fuse. from reading forums on this problem i know this is a very, very common problem for saturn ions. this part absolutely needs to be recalled. in the meantime, to save hundreds at the dealer i will have to replace the part myself.

Every time fuel is slighlty below a quarter tank the engine stalls as if the car is running out of gas and the cars drastically reduces speed with minimun power. also, after the incident occured i went online to reseach the problem and found out that the vehicle had been recalled for fuel pump proplems as well as lighting irregularities. furthermore, as i continued using my vehicle the ingition switch cylinder broke causing the key to be stuck and was unable to turn off the ignition of the car. luckily, i have a stick shift transmission and was able to turn off the car by putting it into 4th gear and letting go of the clutch to turn off the ignition. unfortunately, the car battery remains on and in order to completely turn off the car i have to disconnect the battery cable so the batter life is not drained.

Out of nowhere, when i turned my car off the key would not come out. i have read about this problem with 06 ion's several times and believe it needs investigated. thank you!

Could not shut car off, key is locked in ignition, could not get key out of ignition
03/05/201253000
I could not turn off the car and remove the key. the key was frozen in the on position. since the car was running, i drove to the dealer and they replaced the ignition system and charged me $650.00. i have since learned this is very common with saturns. this could potentially be dangerous. it is a defect and should be recalled.

The key is stuck in the on position in the ignition and the car can not be shut off. i found a consumer affairs web site that has 7700 listings for this problem. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/saturn_ignition_lock.html gm wants me to bring the car in and charge me $115 to diagnose the problem. with the amount of info on the internet about this problem i do not understand why gm has to diagnose this problem. this is a series issue when a car can not be shut off and gm needs to address this problem.
12/05/2011
My ignation switch has been replaced 3 times in 4 years, costing $350.00 every time. it keeps going out. now my fuel pump is leaking. i looked up and found 3 different website showing recalls on the fuel pump for my year, make, and model of my car. saftycar.gov, motortrend.com, and usedcars.com. i call both gm and saturn number which were provided and they tell me there no recalls for my vechicale. now it going to cost $600 to fix my problem. the sad thing is i have to fix it or my car can blow up. i urge people not to buy saturn they are no good.

I am beginning to believe that the issue with the saturn ion is an electical or computer based. i put in a complaint earlier about how the car shuts off in the middle of making turns. this morning as i went to work i was met with the automatic steering not working. at first i thought that maybe the emergency break was still up. i checked my steering fluid and it is full. i turned the car off and then on again and tried to move the wheel. no dice. i drove the car to work fighting with the steering all the way there. when i got to work i called for assistance to get my car to a shop. after making the arrangements, i went to try to straighten up the vehicle somewhat so that others could park beside me and so the towing company could get it out. to my amazement the car steering worked fine. there are several complaints on the web about this issue, the key getting stuck in the ignition, the key being removed from the ignition and the car engine continuing to run anyway, and the shutting off while going over tracks and making turns with the saturn ion 2004-2007. please get gmc to fix these issues. what makes me really angry is that the company knows, they simply are avoiding fixing the problems and only focus on the fuel pump problem. somebody is going to get killed sooner or later btw the shutting off issue or the steering wheel issues. i hope you guys look into these issues and demand that gmc fixes them before then. thanks.

On 9/27/2011 i was unable to turn the key to the off in my ignition. the car stayed on and i cannot remove the key from the on position. there are thousands of complaints online regarding the very same problem with the saturn ion. this is a safety problem and is very dangerous. this vehicle and/ or part must be recalled.

My key has gotten stuck in the ignition in the on position three times now. i have had to purchase the pay for parts and labor three times. my ball joints have gone out. mechanics say this is very odd for a newer vehicle (2006 saturn).

After driving this car for several years i never knew that so many saturn drivers had my issues. the car has a strange knock in the back. it sounds like it is coming from the trunk. there are often strong smells of gasoline. it has begun to capture the key. i have to fight with it to get the key out and now it has started to cut off while i am driving. the latest incident is what i am writing about which is a cut off while driving. i made a slow left turn and the car promptly shut off on me while i was going up the hill. it occured when i first got the vehcile, it has occured at least 5 times since with this morning being the most recent time. it is increasing in between cut offs. it cut off on me only 2 weeks ago as i made a right and went up a hill.

For the second time in a little over two years, my key got stuck in the ignition and i could not get it out or turn off my engine. it happened when i stopped for gas. i have a stick shift and so i stalled the car in order to stop it from running. i had to leave the key in the car and, thankfully, had another key to lock the car door when i wasn't in it. the cost to repair by the dealer was between $500 and $600. the first time i paid $100 but i was still under warranty. the repair is being done locally by a mechanic for $300. they have to take apart the steering wheel so that they can get to the ignition. it is a tumbler problem within the ignition. this has to be replace.

First, my power steering would go out. i would turn of the car and turn it back on and it would be back for a short time. i took it in and it was fixed a week or two ago. now, the ignition key is locked in the on position. to turn it off i have to disconnect fuse 16 and disconnect the negative power cable. to turn it on i have to reconnect the negative power cable and reinsert the fuse. i was advised this is a common problem with saturn ions and not related to the recent work that was done on the car.

In the last year the ignition cylinder in my car has malfunctioned causing my car to remain on and locking the key in place. the key is unable to be removed and the car continues to run. the cylinder was replaced on 8/26/10 and malfunctioned again today 5/30/11. this appears to be a fairly common problem that saturn has ignored. this presents a safety risk and the parts should be recalled.

I got home on friday jan 28, and put my car in park, tried to turn the key into the off position and it wouldn't move. i sat in my driveway, freezing, waiting for a friend to come over and stop the motor, unhook the fuses, and unhook the battery. paid for a new key cylindar, paid to have it rekeyed, and paid a locksmith to take out the old one and replace the new one. it worked for a few hours and then it did the same thing, only this time i went to go start my car, and the key just wont turn. the locksmith came back out and said he can't fix it, it is a manufactuer defect. i have read online of hundreds of others having the same problem, and i called saturn customer service, and they said there is nothing they can do. i asked why there wasn't a recall and she couldn't tell me, i asked who would know, and she said no one. she said there is no actual person that i can talk to about that. she refused to let me speak to a supervisor. google saturn ion ignition, and omg there are hundreds of people with this same defect. i worry for the mom with her babies in the car driving to the store and not being able to shut off her car. something needs to be done about this.

2006 saturn ion redline 32,000 miles had a loud rattling noise coming from the front passenger side of car at idle. took the car into a mechanic which informed me that the the timing belt and gears were shot and that he was surprised that it didn't fly apart on my way into the shop. the repairs will cost approx $1100. this should not happen at only 32k miles and could have resulted in an accident had it not been caught in time.

When it is cold outside, my 2006 saturn ion does not start. it seems the sensor or chip in the ignition key is not recognized by the car and therefore, the vehicle locks and will not start. if we wait 10 minutes, it will usually start. this has not been fixed yet. it has happened 4 times and usually when the temerature is below 20 degress.

When it is cold outside, usually below freezing, my car will not start. i took it to a dealership and they replaced the ignition switch, said that this is common in saturns. that was last week, and my car hasn't started about 8 more times since then. it's not the battery, the lights come on and all that works. i go out and try to start my car, it will not start, i will wait about 8 minutes and try again, then car will start. i work weird shifts at a hospital and sometimes i get off work and have to walk to my car in the middle of the night and my car will not start. that is definitely a safety issue.

The ignition key would not turn off the vehicle. it was stuck in the on position with the car running. i had to drive to my mechanic and have him disconnect the battery to get it to stop. he rebuilt the ignition, but i continue to have problems with the key getting stuck after shut off. there has been another continuing ignition problem in my 2006 ion for a couple of years, before and after the key got stuck in the on position. the key continually gets stuck in the ignition after shut off and will not come out until i play with it (restarting the car, moving it a bit, playing with the door locks, etc.) for a couple of minutes.

2006 saturn ion does not release the ignition key when shutting the engine off. the failure is intermittent occuring about 50% of the time. to get the ignition key to release can take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes by trying to engage and rengage the shifting mechanism to park and sometimes by locking and unlocking the car doors.

I own a 2006 saturn ion and yesterday my key got stuck in the ignition and the car would not turn off. no one was able to get my key out or my car off, so i took it into the dealership and they had to replace the cylinder and it cost $430. i researched online and there are hundreds of other people having the exact same problem with these saturns and there has not been a recall. i feel this should be a recall through saturn, so i wanted to file a formal complaint.

The car was turned on only to find out when we went to get out that the car would not shut off. the only way to shut the car off was to pull the fuel injector fuse under the hood.

I own a 2006 saturn ion level 2 that i bought fairly knew in 2007. i have noticed a clicking noise for several months after i put my key in the ignition to start my car. i have also noticed for several months when i try to turn my car off, that it became more and more difficult to get the key out of the switch. just three days ago i tried to turn my car off after driving and the ignition would not shut off at all nor could i get my key out. i was stranded out of town until i could call a family member to come and figure out how to shut my car off. it took him hours before he just decided to take out the fuse and unhook the battery. after hours of trying to figure out how i can get back home safely and drive on the interstate 4 hours away from where i was visiting . i now have to start my car by hooking the ignition wire switch just so that i can have transportation. i have researched this and apparently there is a long list of saturn owners who have had the same complaint with their vehicles since at 2007. i could not find one recall in regards to a ignition cylinder malfunction on the internet or this site. i am outraged because this is a safety issue i could have easily been driving and god knows what else could have happened. the estimated cost for this repair is about 500 to 600 dollars which is a ridiculous cost that owners should have to pay for. it need to be on the recall list immediately, this is a safety issue someone could get seriously hurt.

When i proceeded to turn my key to turn off my car, my car would not turn off. my key would only turn half of the way but would get stuck in the ignition and my car would not turn off. i then turned my car back on and then tried to turn off my car again. it finally worked after jiggling my key. sometimes my car would turn off fine but most of the time, it would not. i became frightened and very uncomfortable with driving my car because the problem continued to get worse. i then did research on the internet and found out several other saturn ion owner are having the same problems. some saturn ion owners even have not be able to turn their car off at all and had to leave there car running until the gas ran out. i did not want this to happen to me, so i decided to take my car in to get it fixed. they said the problem was the ignition lock cylinder and that i was going to have to get it replaced. i was very upset that this is saturn ions fault and i have to pay for their negligence. my ignition lock cylinder was replaced with a brand new one from saturn. not even a day later the same problems started once again. my car still turns off with a little jiggling of the key but i know it will not last. this is not safe! i do not feel i should have to pay for saturn

We have a saturn ion 2006 which is now experiencing ignition issues. first the car would not stop running (hazard!) in my driveway. this was due to the key being stuck in the on position in the ignition! we had to allow it to run out of gas prior to finding the emergency key release that saturn has noted. now the car will not even start and when i called the customer service line, the response was hardly comforting. looking online it appears that there are numerous complaints logging this issue. it appears that there are quite a few people that would like to pursue a class action lawsuit against saturn/gm as there have been absolutely no investigations, recalls, or even an acknowledgement of said issue. this is the first time the ignition has caused us issues, but looking at the online complaints, it won't be the last. when will it be investigated? will it be investigated after an accident happens perhaps with my 2 children in the car? will it be classified as an urgent issue then? see how many people have had the issue below via the link embedded. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/saturn.htm

I have a 2006 saturn ion quad coupe and my key got stuck in the ignition and my car wont turn off. the key does not turn and the the shift lock instructions in the saturn user manual do not work. i took my car to 3 gm dealers and 2 of them could not fix it and say they have never seen anything like that. i do not know what triggered it, i have not had any other issues with my key or ignition before. i ended up having to leave my car at a gm dealership. they were already closed so one of the guys pulled the fuse that turns the ignition off, however the key is still inside so the car is still on, the doors wont lock and the gm dealership does not have gates to protect my car. in other words my battery will eventually die and there is a risk that my car will get stolen.

On august 10, 2010, i was unable to remove my keys from the ignition of my 2006 saturn ion. the care would also not turn off. i took it to an authorized saturn service provider and they were able to fix the problem by cleaning and repairing the key lock cylinder at a cost of over $180 to me. on august 18, 2010, i was unable to remove my keys from the ignition again, but this time i was able to turn the car off. i took it to the same service provider and they were not able to replicate the problem. i was told that there really wasn't anything they could do about the problem unless i wanted them to replace the key lock cylinder, which would cost another $160+. i opted to not spend the additional money since i had already spent money to fix the problem the week before. instead i decided to call the saturn customer care line provided by gm to file a complaint. they told me that there was nothing they could do to help me since the car is over warranty at 82,000 miles. my car is only 4 years old and from everything i've heard, no other type of car has this problem and it has been happening to other saturn ion owners that have less miles on their cars than i do. this is obviously a defective part and needs to be recalled. there is a danger of someone not being able to turn their car off and possibly running out of gas or not being able to get help because an authorized service provider might not be open at the time.

 1. my vehicle began having problems starting in hot weather last summer. 2. last monday, may 24, 2010, my car would not start at the end of the day. usually if i waited ten minutes or so and tried again, the vehicle started. this time i attempt three times in a thirty minute period and the car did not start. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership where i purchased it. fortunately the next day, there were similar condiitions and my vehicle would not start in the afternoon. 3. there were no codes there showed up on the car's computer. due to the voltages not matching between my vehicle and the manufacturer's specification, the dealership replaced the ignition switch. i have not had any problems since even though there are been four or five days of hot weather.

2006 saturn ion never wrecked ignition switch stopped working correctly, and the key got stuck in the ignition resulting in having the car left running until the car was cut off by pulling the cables off of the battery posts. was told the ignition switch was rusted and the spring in the switch had broken and had gone bad by a mechanic and had to have the ignition switch replaced and key recoded.

Was driving at 35 mph when suddenly everything died and check engine light came on, i thought it was the transmission, was able to restart after pulling to a stop, drove slowly to saturn dealership, they test drove it said all was ok, sent me home. same thing happened about a week later, went to dealership again, they had tech hook up to computer and told me it was the apps - accelerator pedal position sensor. this defect causes an unsafe driving condition and is expensive to repair. they are not sure if it's the apps or the wiring. it may be due to moisture.
