The car, when just weeks old, smelled of gas coming from the front grille, a strong odor 5 minutes after shutting it off. dealer checked said all was normal. along with this issue was a loss of vacuum in the brake assist canister when it sat in the driveway ? when you got in the car the brake the brake pedal was rock-hard. there should be 5 ? 10 pumps of vacuum in the canister on any car. this is noticeable in a stick shift (it is) or any car you have to step on the brake for the interlocked starter. dealer checked also said was normal. then about two years after the smell of gas stopped altogether and the power assist seemed normal as the peddle had power when the car was left to sit. about 6 months ago the gas smell started coming back when it was parked ? this time for just a minute or so ? intermittent. then about 3 months ago it started getting worse ? not just when the car was shut off but now gas odor with closed windows at the first few lights you came to after starting the car, with windows shut in cold weather. now the odor is strong, sometimes nauseating at traffic lights. the brake pedal issue also returned in february on very cold mornings. i do not know if a vacuum leak and a fuel smell are related here. i cannot see any leaking gas or spots on the pavement and i have looked a few dozen times over the two time periods this problem(s) have occurred. a very strong smell of gas and no visible leak. i am familiar that car is recalled in southern states only for a fuel pump that has cracks in the plastic return lines ? and also have read (although cannot be sure if this is true leak fuel in a pool on top of the tank and not drip and the evaporating odor will make its way forward to the engine compartment or the back wheel wells - i can smell gas in the rear wheel wells also although sometimes not as strong as the grille. *tr

After replacing the fuel pump last year i am now facing a cracked gas tank. i asked the mechanic if it could be due to me hitting anything, i had not been in any accidents, and i was advised there wasn't anything to indicate and outside damage. just that the tank itself has worn away.

The fuel pump assembly unit on my 2007 saturn ion has cracked and developed a leak causing a significant fire and environmental hazard. there was no incident that lead to the crack, just a faulty part. there was a recall issued for this same problem, but it does not extend to the state in which i reside.

I had smelled a very strong gas odor in my car and contacted gm/saturn customer service on november 28, 2012 in regards to the smell and to find out if my car was included in a recent recall for the fuel pump. i was told that the fuel pump recall was only included in certain states and my state was not included. i took my car to my mechanic on 12/14/12 and they confirmed that my car smelled of gas due to a faulty fuel pump and it needed to be replaced. they also said that the fuel pump faults were due to being in states that high heat. i live in maryland and the fuel smell came about during the summer which is very hot in the state. i contacted gm because i feel that i should be reimbursed for a faulty fuel pump since it is a fire and safety hazard. *tr

Began smelling an odor of gasoline when i got out of my car. didn't think much of it until it happened several times. took my car (2007 saturn ion) to a gm dealer for other, unrelated issues and the service manager told me the fuel pump module was cracked. i contacted gm after learning about the recall for the same problem on cars in other warm weather states. however, they told me because it was not part of the recall they would not help cover the cost of repair even though it is a safety/fire hazard. i've read similar complaints from all over the country, so this is obviously affecting more people than gm will admit. *tr

My check engine light kept coming on, even the smaller check engine light, i had the throttle pedal replaced because it was throwing codes, then i began to smell gas fumes and really became concerned so i took it to jim butler chevrolet in fenton, mo and they told me that my fuel pump was leaking and there was an issue with my valves, i went online to see if i there were any similar issues from other saturn owners and i discovered that there was a recall on the fuel pump for the 2007 saturn ion, i called jim butlers and told them what i discovered and the person handling my vehicle issue told me that i can't believe everything i find online and that my vin number was not one of the cars listed on the recall list, yet it was doing the exact same thing as described by other saturn owners. i am very upset at the fact that my car had the same issues as the other saturn's but i had to pay to have mine replaced, i paid $513.00 at a customer friendly repair shop who also found the recall on my car. the shop is holding my old fuel pump in case there was a need to inspect it. i found the recall on safercar.gov which is an official site. i got my report september 3, 2012 the nhtsa campaign id number is 09v419000. my check engine light is still coming on as i was told that i have issues with my valves, but i can't afford to have that seen too yet. it is really sad when i go to a place that is supposed to be certified in handling saturns and yet when i notify them of a recall on the same issue as my car was having they dismiss me by telling me i shouldn't believe what i read on the internet. my car was a safety hazard while my fuel pump was leaking and that scared me a lot. there is no more gas fumes now that i had to pay to have my fuel pump replaced. i really hope that you take my complaint seriously because the way i was treated was completely ridiculous. *tr

Approximately 3-4 weeks ago, i started smelling a strong gasoline smell outside my car when i parked it. the smell was growing stronger (and i could smell it in the cabin itself) so i took it to my mechanic who told me it was the fuel pump. he had printed out the recall and suggested i contact gm. when i contacted the local dealership, i was told they wouldn't/couldn't honor the recall as it was vin specific. back to my mechanic who fixed it (and by now i was leaking gasoline) and he advised me to contact gm again as the fuel pump was cracked exactly where the fuel pump involved in the recall was. he gave me the part and i did contact gm but was told by gm that they will not honor the recall, that it was vin specific. to add insult to injury i was told by the person who called me that she wanted to assure me that your vehicle is safe to drive, it's not involved in the recall. needless to say, that did not go over well since the reason it's safe to drive is that i had it fixed myself. i will also be filing complaints with my state ag and the bbb. thank you for your consideration and help in this matter. *tr

Smell of gasoline coming from under rear of vehicle. took car to dealer to get fuel pump replaced. i see recall for similare problem but only in some states. i see recal has been expanded to hopefully include all states.

Took my car to a gm dealer regarding the scent of gas in back of the car inc. in the trunk. while doing a scheduled maintenance, they didn't find anything. took my vehicle to a different dealer and the smell of gas had gotten worse. there was no stain in my driveway. once the gas tank was moved and then removed, the puddling of gas on the top of the tank was prevalent. looking closer, the plastic was cracked that was apart of the module. *tr

I parked my car in my garage and closed the garage door, when i went to leave i noticed a strong smell of gas. my local gm dealership diagnosed it as cracks and pinholes in the fuel lines running from the fuel pump to fuel filter consistent with recall 09v419000, gm will not honor this recall even know my vin is within the recall breaking points, because i do not reside in one of the selected states and they claim my issue is due to wear. *tr

I noticed that my car would not turn over like normal. then i began to smell gas and lose mileage. i looked up similar recalls on this site but i did not get such a mailing. *tr

My daughter smelled gas while driving her car. she took it to my mechanic who said that her fuel pump was defective but that her vehicle had a safety recall issued for the same problem. the mechanic printed out the recall notice (safety recall 09226). i took the vehicle to the authorized dealer and they would not honor the recall because the vin was not on the list. can saturn certify that they never did any parts swaps between factories? *tr

Vehicle exhibits the exact same issue described below, but because i do not live in these states, my vehicle is not covered under this recall. i fear that my vehicle could start on fire any day now and gm will not care. this is a serious safety hazard to not only me, but other drivers as well. a fuel leak is a serious issue that i feel should not be ignored. general motors is recalling certain model year 2006 chevrolet cobalt and saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona and nevada; and model year 2007 chevrolet cobalt, pontiac g5 and saturn ion vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona, california, florida, nevada and texas. the plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. if either of these ports develops a crack, fuel will leak from the area. if the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground and vehicle performance may be affected. *tr

2007 saturn ion 3 manual sedan 1.) fuel pump delivery system recall and has been repaired after a serious fuel leak was detected. 2.)purge flow solenoid- engine light came on after the pump delivery system was detected but was not repaired because it was not included in recall. car gets very little gas mileage because the fuel to oxygen ratio being off. every time i go to the gas station i cannot get my car to start. it doesn't matter if i have half of a tank of gas or almost on empty. it takes several tries and only starts after i rev the engine because the fuel to oxygen ratio and the fuel pump floods my car as soon as the fuel pump is engaged. i know that after this happens so many times that it will cause the starter to burn up in my car. 3.) ignition switch- cannot turn key on as if the steering wheel is locked/ cannot turn key off/ take key out and car is still running! disconnect battery to shut the car off. 4.) electronic power steering- acts as if the power steering has a short. while driving with speeds as little as 15mph in a residential neighbor hood or 70mph on the interstate. the power steering light comes on and all power steering is lost and becomes almost impossible to drive. after shutting the car off and restarting the car the power steering works but shortly after it fails again. this happens every time i drive my car. the first time this happened i was on an exit ramp on the interstate with a very sharp curve. i could barely control the vehicle. needless to say my children are no longer allowed to ride in this car until it is repaired. *tr

I discovered that my car had a crack in the fuel pump after smelling fuel and noticing that i had lost fuel. after taking it to get looked at, the mechanic said there was a recall on this problem. when looked into further, however, the recall is only good for cars manufactured in or currently registered to a few states located in the south. after researching the recall and reading the summaries, though, my scenario is exactly the same as the summary provided. my car has a title from ohio and is currently registered in ohio. it doesn't make sense that only cars in certain states are allowed the recall. if weather is the deciding factor, ohio's weather for the past couple of weeks, when this problem started, has been hitting 100 degrees. i am very dissatisfied with the recall stipulations and the limited information required. *tr

About 3 weeks ago, i started smelling gas each time i shut off my car. on friday, my son noticed gas pouring from underneath the car. my stepson works for gmc. he removed the tank and informed me leakage was from fuel pump. he also informed me of a recall related to this matter. i contacted my local dealer and was informed the recall was vin specific and my vehicle had no recall for same. i spoke with gmc and was told the same thing. i was advised to have diagnostics ran by local dealership, jeff wyler gmc, buick, pontiac. i was told the cost would be $93.00 until i made the appointment. thereafter i was informed i would be charged hourly and the cost would be more than $93 if the gas tank had to be removed. i could have the car fixed for the cost of the diagnostic fee! i was further informed even if the issue with the car was related to recall #090226, gmc would not necessarily be responsible for covering cost of repairs as the recall was not for my car. i further noted that cars from others states where included regardless; however, kentucky and ohio were not included. i live in ky and purchased the car in ohio. i'm not sure where the car was manufactured. i understand i might have to pay to have the car repair and have no issues doing same. i just want a fair determination as to whether my car should be included in the recall based on current problems and not based on a specific vin number. how can gmc determine my car would not/does not have issues with regard to this recall simply based on a vin number? any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated. *tr
