| Odi has received 846 complaints and gm identified 3,489 reports alleging sudden loss of steering power assist in model year (my) 2004 through 2007 saturn ion vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).sixteen of these complaints alleged that the eps warning lamp had illuminated before or during the loss of steering assist and the increased steering effort contributed to a crash. two of the gm crash claims indicated that the driver was injured in the crash. in a previous preliminary evaluation pe10-005, odi investigated the sudden loss of power steering assist in my 2005 through 2010 chevrolet cobalt vehicles. in may 2011, in response to an odi information request letter for rq10-004, gm provided odi with complaint, warranty and eps system information related to eps loss of assist for the saturn ion and peer vehicles pontiac g6 and chevrolet malibu. in that response, gm indicated that the eps system used in the subject vehicles was the same as that used in the my2005 to 2010 chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5. in march 2010, gm recalled approximately 1.05 million chevrolet cobalt and pontiac g5 vehicles (nhtsa recall no. 10v-073) to correct a defect with the eps assist motor. the defect identified was described as a buildup of brush debris mixed with oily material on the eps electric motor armature which causes the motor to stop functioning; the same problem identified in the current subject vehicles.odi has duplicated this failure in both a chevrolet cobalt and saturn ion previously tested at the vehicle research and test center (vrtc). in the defect notification letter for the previously recalled cobalt and g5 vehicles, gm stated that the vehicles may experience a sudden loss of assist that could occur at any time while driving and that if power steering was lost the vehicle would revert to manual steering mode and would require increased steering effort from the driver.odi believes that, depending on driving circumstances this increase in steering effort could result in some loss of control and a crash.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-014) to further assess the frequency, scope and safety consequences of a sudden loss of steering assist in the subject vehicles. | ||||||

| Halfway during the half mile commute to my home from work on december 21, 2012, the power steering failed. this happens very frequently. i hear the chime and then the pwr strng light comes on and i have to steer manually. i often have to stop my car and turn it off just to reset the steering. sometimes it is very hard to turn the car safely while driving very slowly and/or parking. i feel that gm should be forced to recall this problem as i see from this site that it's a common and known problem. if an elderly, physically weak or inexperienced driver should have this happen, it could result in many serious accidents. i've owned my vehicle for 6+ years since brand new. *tr | |||

| 2007 saturn ion 3 manual sedan 1.) fuel pump delivery system recall and has been repaired after a serious fuel leak was detected. 2.)purge flow solenoid- engine light came on after the pump delivery system was detected but was not repaired because it was not included in recall. car gets very little gas mileage because the fuel to oxygen ratio being off. every time i go to the gas station i cannot get my car to start. it doesn't matter if i have half of a tank of gas or almost on empty. it takes several tries and only starts after i rev the engine because the fuel to oxygen ratio and the fuel pump floods my car as soon as the fuel pump is engaged. i know that after this happens so many times that it will cause the starter to burn up in my car. 3.) ignition switch- cannot turn key on as if the steering wheel is locked/ cannot turn key off/ take key out and car is still running! disconnect battery to shut the car off. 4.) electronic power steering- acts as if the power steering has a short. while driving with speeds as little as 15mph in a residential neighbor hood or 70mph on the interstate. the power steering light comes on and all power steering is lost and becomes almost impossible to drive. after shutting the car off and restarting the car the power steering works but shortly after it fails again. this happens every time i drive my car. the first time this happened i was on an exit ramp on the interstate with a very sharp curve. i could barely control the vehicle. needless to say my children are no longer allowed to ride in this car until it is repaired. *tr | |||

| Today while taking a left on to my road my breaks felt as if they had gone soft and spongy and it was hard to stop. after realizing this problem my vehicle's dash started beeping and the words pwr str flashed on my dash and while turning into the road my steering wheel would not turn normal. it was very hard to turn into my road almost resulting in a crash. luckily a crash did not happen. i had one other person in the car with me. this result could have resulted in a wreck risking the lives of everyone in the car. as i had difficulty pulling into my driveway i shut the vehicle off and turned it back on resulting in the wheel turning normally. i took my car around the block to see if it were to happen again and it had. i did make it safely home after that due to the fact i took a back road. i feel that the investigation to recall the power steering in the ions should be in affect due to the abundance of complaints about this specific problem. i do not see the reason it has not already been accomplished. for those looking to buy a saturn ion, these vehicles have problems and i would not recommend anyone with or without children to own a vehicle as dangerous as this one. thank you. | |||

| I was on my honeymoon in orlando, fl. on nov. 17th, 2011 when it went out the first time. i discovered that when i turned the vehicle off and started it again, that the power steering would return to proper operation. since that day, it has been intermittent. no typical timing or environmental situation, just randomly stop working. it did that for several months until 3 weeks ago when it would shut off 5 minutes after starting the vehicle every time. now, it does nothing, it never comes on. i checked both fuses and being in the vehicle industry myself, i know that a fuse, relay, or circuit breaker just dies. i feel that if it were the fuse, it would not only work sometimes but it would not work at all. i am expecting the manufacturer to replace this. as this is my 3rd saturn and i had well over 200k on the other 2 with no problems at all. | |||

| Yesterday afternoon i was driving on our main city road, going 35-40mph. what sounded like the seat belt alarm went off a few times, then all of a sudden the power steering went out. the same thing happened again on the same day as i was backing out of a driveway. it seems to be a sporadic issue because it didn't happen again last night. not wanting to take any chances, i dropped the car off at my local mechanics last night....just got the call from him that the car needs a new steering motor. this could be an extremely dangerous event and the car should be recalled. i'm a 47 yr old woman with ms and it's nearly impossible for me to take a turn when the power steering is out. | |||

| The electric steering keeps going out and took it to an authrized saturn dealer and they said that the would have to check it to see why its going out as there has been recalled on the electric steering in the pontiac g6 which has the same problem and carries the same system and the dealer told me if its not the motor i have to pay 97.50 for them to find out its not the motor in the steering plus what it cost to fix it there has been problems with the electric steering there should be a full recall on all the one that uses the same part with the ones that have been recalled all ready this is a big safety issue and gm should pay to correct the problem not charge a customer to check whats wrong with it as there is still some warrenty on the car this problem needs fixed and i dont have the money to pay out the car only has 55,600 miles on it shouldnt be having problems like this hope you can help with this issue and get gm to do a recall on this for theses cars power steering failure like that makes the car hard to steer | |||

| My power steering light came on and i noticed that i had lost the power steering ability. with difficulty, i steered the car to the side of the road and turned the car off and then back on and the power steering was working again. this has happened multiple times and with the research i have done, i feel it needs to be recalled for my specific saturn. i bought the car used 1.5 years ago and did not know of any problems until now. i have over 100xxx miles on it but that should not exclude me from any recalls that may be issued in the future. i drive my car over 200 miles a day and no longer feel safe in it. this is my 3rd saturn and i have always loved them but i am very disappointed that this has not been recalled on my car when it is a very specific problem that is happening and being recalled in other vehicles. i got an estimate of over $1000 to fix the problem but i do not have that kind of money laying around. i just hope that i do not get in an accident because of this. if that does happen, gm will be hearing from my attorney. | |||

| The power steering stopped working while driving. a warning light saying pwr steering appeared when this happened. the car was drivable but hard to maneuver due to lack of power steering. once i restart the car it resets and the power steering is normal until the problem reoccurs which is often. there is could happen on a short or long drive. i could drive a block the light appears i shut the car off it resets and i could drive for miles and it not happen again or go another block only for the problem to happen all over again. from my understanding this is a recognized issue with this make and model of saturn and it will be fixed under warranty. how do i go about getting this fixed without it costing me since this is a known problem . i am reporting in hoping it will help to have this problem be officially called a recall by gm and saturn and fixed once and for all. | |||

| While backing out of my driveway a pwr steering warning flashed and suddenly i was without power steering and had to steer manually without power assist. i turned off my 2007 saturn ion and then turned it back on and the power steering returned to normal. a couple of months later i was returning home from work on the highway during rush hour and the same thing happened again. fortunately i am strong and was able to steer the car safely off the highway in order to turn off the car and turn it back on again. steering the vehicle took considerable strength. both times when this happened there was no warning. i could only imagine what could have happened to someone who is not very strong. i could see where a person could completely lose control of their vehicle. a couple of months later i received a recall letter from gm informing me of the problem and directing me to the nearest dealer to have the power steering replaced. the bottom line is that i was lucky not to be injured because i had the strength to steer the car manually. to suddenly be without power steering without warning is an extremely dangerous situation that could be potentially fatal at highway speeds. i have been driving for 35 years and this is the most serious automotive defect i have encountered. it seemed the recall letter was too little too late. | |||

| I purchased a 2007 saturn ion in august 2007. approx 1-2 months after purchase, my power steering went out almost resulting in a crash with another vehicle. i took my car to the saturn dealership where i purchased it, and they promptly fixed the problem; so i thought. nov 28, 2010 i was driving on the eisenhower expressway and my power steering went out again. because it was early sunday after thanksgiving there wasn't much traffic. but this incident could have turned tragic. i request that investigation be made into the 2007 saturn ion. even though gm closed this product line (wish i would've knew their plan before my purchase), i would like to think that they would investigate this single incident, as there could be many other consumers with the same experience. not to mention the potential legal ramifications if it is found that the ions are defective. if i just got a lemon car...then so be it. | |||

| Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) we have owned a 2007 saturn ion 4 door for about 2 1/2 years. we bought it new. the car has about 54,000 miles on it now. in the mid 40,000 mile range, whenever we would make many turns (we live in the mountains--few straightaways), the electric power steering started going out. the car can still be steered, but with difficulty. this problem is only gradually getting worse. upon turning the ignition off and restarting, the power steering works again, although a few turns more, the steering will go out yet again until the motor (or whatever??) cools off. recently, there was a massive recall re this problem with chevy cobalts and other near saturns. i understand the saturn ion is basically the same and used the same steering mechanism that has failed with the cobalts and clones. with the above, it would seem reasonable to include the ions in the recall. this is not an uncommon problem with the ions as internet traffic confirms. please include the ions with this recall. the parts involved are the same and the chances of accidents, or worse, no different. thank-you, [xxx] ps saturn customer service states that they are not aware of this problem and that they are not included in the recall. it seems saturns have been overlooked. *tr | |||

| I have had my 2007 saturn for almost 3 years my power steering went out on the car. i have a 100,000 mile or 5 year warranty and saturn is saying it's not covered under my warranty because the power steering is electric. now i've that's a common problem with saturn. and i'm sorry but it's very dangerous driving without power steering. so does this mean every 3 years i'm going to have to pay 700 hundred dollars to have it fixed. the power steering cuts in and out and sometimes while i'm turning. i could get slammed by another car because all the sudden my car loses it's power steering. *tr | |||

| We have a 2007 saturn ion with 45,000 miles. yesterday the power steering motor went out. motor is part of the steering column so we have to have it all replaced. quote by a saturn dealer is $1000. we talked to a local, reputable, mechanic and he informed us that driving the car in such a condition could result in the car catching on fire from the heat generated from turning without the power assist. this is an ongoing issue going back several year models of ion's. we do not feel we should have to pay to have a safety issue fixed on the car. there should be a recall. *tr | |||

| Tl - the contact owns a 2007 saturn ion. since purchasing the vehicle a thumping sound has been coming from the steering column. the steering became very tight and hard when making a right turn. when making a left turn the steering was very easy. when taken to a dealer the diagnosis was that the complete steering column needs to be replaced. the contact filed a complaint with general motors and the reference number is 716555540051. the current mileage was 45,780. kg updated 10/03/08 *bf updated 10/15/08. *jb | |||

| Upon purchase of vehicle, over driveway slopes, or other road bumps vehicle has loud popping and clunking noise. vehicle also has popping noise and feeling under feet of driver and passenger while steering at stand still or while driving...vehicle when experiencing road hazards that cause braking action while steering locks up and jolts forward causing loss of control of vehicle for random time amounts. all of these problems have been reported to dealer, taken in for repairs, (3x) each time i have been told problem is fixed, problem can not be duplicated. i drive vehicle home and the problem is either partially better for a couple weeks or not better at all. during the time that vehicle was partially better for a couple of weeks a strut mount was replaced on a vehicle with only 9,000 miles (after the 2nd attempt to discover issue) 3rd attempt only had a steering issue addressed,(i shaft dry and binding) however this has only partially solved the problem. vehicle still pops, clunks and has issue with loss of control over unexpected road hazards while braking. *jb | |||

| There is a recall on chevrolet cobalt's and pontiac g5's nhtsa campaign id number 10v073000 for electric power steering loss of power. that occurs any time and is becoming more frequent on my 2007 saturn ion it has the same power steering assist. why is my car not listed when it is a gm product as well with the same component. *tr | |||

| Tl*the contact owns a 2007 saturn ion. in december of 2007, the electronic power steering began to fail intermittently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer in january of 2008 and they initially could not identify the cause of the failure. after several attempts, they discovered that the electronic power steering failed. the first repair was not made until february 25, 2008. the failure recurred several times in march and again on april 14th. the dealer informed the contact to remove the aftermarket lights she installed on the vehicle. once the lights were removed, the vehicle met the manufacturer's specifications. the vehicle was taken in for repair again and on april 23, 2008, the contact retrieved the vehicle. she was only able to drive five miles before the failure recurred. the failure mileage was 9,000 and current mileage is 13,000. updated 05/20/08. *lj updated 05/20/08 | |||
