In model year (my) 2007, pontiac solstice and saturn sky vehicles equipped with the 2.0l turbocharged engine used an auxiliary vacuum pump to supplement the engine as a source of vacuum to the brake booster during low vacuum conditions, such as immediately after a cold start.the vacuum pump operation was controlled by switches that sensed booster vacuum, turning the pump on when booster vacuum dropped below a specified level.in the my 2008 solstice and sky vehicles (the subject vehicles), general motors (gm) eliminated the auxiliary vacuum pump and replaced it with the optimized hydraulic braking (ohb) system.the design intent of ohb is to supplement engine vacuum, in conditions where low vacuum is generated by the engine, with hydraulic pressure generated by the stability control system pump controlled by the electronic brake control module (ebcm). for up to about aminute after a cold start, when the system is in ohb assist mode, the driver must press harder on the brake pedal to achieve desired deceleration.also, when the ohb mode is activated, the driver can hear and feel, through brake pedal vibration, the stability control system pump operation.starting in late april 2008, gm changed from the ohb system back to the vacuum pump system design.odi is aware of 264 non-duplicative complaints to odi and gm alleging inadequate brake power assist in the subject vehicles when applying the brakes just after a cold start, including one incident involving a crash into a tree during a driveway maneuver.to address these concerns by consumers, gm has issued threetechnical service bulletins.on june 4, 2007, gm released an informational bulletin (no part replacement or software updates), bulletin# 07-05-22-002, to dealers explaining the functionality of the ohb system.on november 29, 2007, gm released a service bulletin, bulletin# 07-05-22-007, with instructions to recalibrate the ebcm with revised software to make ohb operation feel more like a normal vacuum assist system.to improve cold start braking performance comparable to my 2007 vehicles, gm released a third service bulletin in two parts, bulletins 07-05-25-007a (april 29, 2008) and 07-05-25-007b (may 16, 2008), for automatic and manual transmission vehicles respectively.these bulletins released new engine control software to change the idle strategy after a cold start so that more vacuum is available for brake power assist.beginning the week of june 23, 2008, gm will begin sending letters to consumers to make them aware of the availability of most recent calibration.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I purchased a 2008 saturn turbo sky in september 2007. in january 2008, i took the car in for service because of the brakes. after the car has sat for a period of 5 hours or more and is moved, the brake pedal pushes almost to the floor the first 3-4 times brakes are applied. you are not certain the car will come to a complete stop. saturn kept the car overnight and told me there was nothing wrong with the car....that turbo sky autos all operate in this manner. they tell me that all turbo autos operate in this manner. i do not believe this for an instant. i witnessed a tech move the car, stopped the car, came out and informed his supervisor that he would not drive the car the way the brakes functioned. they kept the car another day and the next day i realized nothing had changed. later, i was informed that the ntsb was looking into this problem. last month, i received a letter saying that saturn was aware of a braking problem with the turbo sky and i was asked to bring the car in for a calibration adjustment. i did this, received the car back and it's basically the same. i would like to know if there really is an investigation going on or is this just my car. i've discussed this problem with people i know very familiar with turbo engines and they say this should not happen at all. i will look forward to hearing from you. *tr

While starting up my 2008 sky redline, the brakes do not work. i went to reverse out of the driveway and when i applied the brakes they did not work. i had to floor the brakes and it still kept going. this has happened to me 10 times and the car is only a month old. there are plenty forum discussions about this on www.skyroadster.com this must be addressed. someone could be injured or killed. also, what if you gave the car to a valet or someone else to drive???? anyone would be extremely scared. it's definitely a safety issue. please resolve!!! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 saturn sky. while driving approximately 55 mph on normal road conditions, the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately, white smoke appeared from the instrument panel, which resulted in reduced visibility. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road with caution and roadside assistance was called to the scene. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the heating and air conditioning system caused the failure. the system was replaced. the contact smelled a strong odor of coolant inside the vehicle following the repair and the traction control failed to operate. whenever the vehicle was in operation, the abs warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. on six separate occasions, the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. the failure mileage was 2,000 and current mileage was 15,500.

My car is at saturn of hickory for the third time because of the brakes they said they cannot fix them it is a defect i have asked for my money back with no answer as of yet my brakes were like this from the very first day. the first day i went to drive the car i called the sales person that sold us the car and told her hey something is wrong i have no brakes !!!! they have said that you have to let the car warm up first but that is not in the manual nor did the sale person tell us this. i have almost hit something numerous times in this car already and it only has about 2000 miles on it. i should not have to sit and wait for a car to warm up before i can drive it in the summer time !!!! *tr

The brakes required extremely high force to get the vehicle to stop for the 30-60 seconds after start up, if the vehicle has been sitting for approx. 6 hours or more. my understanding is that in 2008 as a cost savings gm chose to remove the vacuum pump. since this vehicle is a turbo it does not develop high enough vacuum and it bleed off quickly after the vehicle sits a while. the vacuum pump is being put back into the 2009 to eliminate this problem. this issue is very dangerous and needs to be addressed immediately. this problem has been going on for almost a year. make gm fix this problem on the 2008 turbos, please. *tr

I own a 2008 saturn sky redline. my vehicle suffers the problem listed in several similar complaints logged with the nhtsa and mentioned on multiple saturn sky forums - brake system not working adequately after starting the vehicle once is has sat overnight. typically takes 30-45 seconds to build sufficient vacuum for brake system to function normally. no accidents as i was aware of the issue when purchasing the car. however, in my opinion, it does pose a safety issue and should be corrected. *tr

Brakes do not work when car is first started. recently the same failure occurred when i was leaving the freeway and hit the off ramp (on 03/21/08) near my home, i ended up grabbing the emergency brake to assist in stopping me. that time, however, a svc braking system light came on. it was taken to the dealer who promptly reset the computer and told me it was nothing to worry about. i called saturn and complained. they called the dealer who worked on the brakes. as of this morning, it is still doing it. i have to say, i have great trepidation driving the car at this point and will no longer permit my wife to drive or ride in it. saturn needs to step up the proverbial bat, come up with a fix, recall all affected units and fix them all before someone dies. *tr

When the car is started (cold start) the brakes do not work at first. if one sits there for 2-3 minutes and lets the vacuum build up - then they work. the manufacturer fails to mention this to the buyers. i have had this occur several times. *tr i must mention that my car is a 5-speed stickshift. shortly after purchase, i started my car - the emergency brake was on, my foot was on the brake, and as soon as i started to let up on the clutch the car jumped forward & my foot was still on the brake. since then, i always place my car in neutral before starting. then approximately a month ago: i went to move my car out of the garage to the driveway - i started the car, after approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute i put it into reverse, slowly backed out, and when i went to stop i had no brakes - thankfully i had the presence of mind to throw it into neutral and grabbed the emergency brake. just missed going across the street to where children were walking to school. then on monday of this week, i started the car, let it idle for over 2 minutes, put into reverse to back out of the garage and had the same thing happened again. i discussed this with my dealer and was told to just let the car warm up properly. this is worrisome because i cannot let anyone valet park or drive my car for fear that someone could get hurt. it is my understanding that gm did away with an auxiliary vacuum booster on the engine so now it takes time for sufficient vacuum to build up for the braking system to work. and i have discovered that a number of people are having this same problem with the 2008 model year of the saturn sky by perusing the skyroaster.com website. seems to have been a big mistake this is a disaster waiting-to-happen as not only is there going to be property damage caused but there is going to end up with people being injured or killed. and i do not believe that it should wait for someone to be maimed or injured for this to be looked into. *tr

I purchased a saturn sky redline less than 2 weeks ago. each morning when i start the car after it has sat overnight, and attempt to use the brakes, the pedal goes down to the floor accompanied by a vibrating feeling. this morning i nearly hit a car traveling past my driveway when i had to use much more effort than usual to bring the car to a stop. there seemed to be absolutely no power brakes. after looking online i have now read about other owners who are experiencing the same issue. my dealership did not make me aware of this issue or that i need to follow any special procedure. *tr

I was traveling at 20 mph about 25 minutes into morning commute when the vehicle in front of me impacted another vehicle. at this time i applied my brakes to the floor along with my clutch. i felt my abs working, but the car did not stop in the approximately 30 feet of space and i impacted the car in front of me. inspection and damage report to follow. i felt the car should have stopped with room to spare given the distance and pressure applied. thank you for your time and consideration. *tr

I am so disappointed in my new 2008 saturn sky. i've had to take it to las vegas 3 times for brake problems. at start up there are no brakes for the first 45 to 60 seconds. the brakes go from rock hard, to crunchy, and then finally working. the dealer is telling us now, that this is normal for this car. we were not warned of the brakes before we bought the car! the 3rd time we took it in for the start up brake problem and for the brakes not working when stepping on the brake while using cruise control! this happened to me going 55 miles per hour down the highway. was told by the dealer that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and was given a print out saying that the vehicles brakes are normal for this vehicle! the brakes failed to work again going down the highway at 75 miles per hour! this can not be normal. anyone else having cruise control brake problems with their 2008 saturn sky?? does someone have to die before they decide it is not normal for the brakes not to work??? on this form i put the incident date as september, which is right after i bought the car. the cruise control issue started in feb 08. *tr

Upon starting the car the first time of the day, or after extended shutdown, the brake pedal has excessive travel and feels as if the car has no brakes. upon initially attempting to apply the brake when backing out of the garage it feels as if there is a binding or grinding feel along with the excessive brake pedal travel. if i wait for the car to idle for a minute or two this does not happen. *tr

The vehicle has very poor brake response after initial cold start. if the vehicle is put in gear without allowing a minute warmup the brakes will not function properly. although the manufacturer and dealer recognize this issue they call this normal. if this vehicle was left in a parking garage or valet situation for extended periods it is my opinion the valet would crash this vehicle not knowing to let it warm up!! this is a much more serious problem than gm saturn is considering it to be. *tr

Brakes do not work at start-up. when i start vehicle and go to drive or reverse, the brakes do not function. i try to press hard on the brakes and it still doesn't stop the vehicle. this has happened many times and there are forums on it on skyroadster.com. also, if you do a search on the web and type in -saturn sky brakes you will find sites the same complaints. many have the same problem. this is a brand new 2008 saturn sky redline. i'm afraid i may hit something or someone. it's very scary not to mention what if i give the car to valet??? or let someone else drive it? this is a safety issue and must be resolved before someone gets hurt. dealer says this is normal for brakes to be this way at start-up. i have never heard of such a thing like this on other cars. please help!!!

*tr

We took delivery of a 2008 saturn sky rl (turbo) in early august 2007. the very next day we started the car and pulled out into the driveway. when the brakes were used to slow the vehicle their was about a 75% failure with the brake pedal. my wife was briefly panicked and slammed the brakes down further and eventually got the car to stop. by this point she had already traveled an extra 15 feet down the driveway and nearly hit me as i was standing in the driveway watching her back out her new vehicle. we initially thought since the vehicle was new that it might just need a few days to get things working. she drove the car very carefully for a few days and pumped the brakes before each use. after a few days the issue did not go away so we contacted the dealer. we brought the car into the dealer (which is sat for 3 weeks). eventually we were told by the dealer that this is a problem with the car and is caused because they eliminated the brake vacuum pump from the 08 models. the dealer said they would install the old vacuum pump on our car but it could not be done for another 4 months because they don't have the parts. the concern with this car is we are now familiar with the vehicle and understand to let it run for a few minutes before driving. out of several new cars over the years i must admit this is the first time i have been told to let the car run for a minute so the brakes will work. however my concern is around someone new driving any 08 sky? i think there is a huge safety concern around a peson in valet. i have seen numerous complaints regarding this same issue on the skyroadster forums and feel it is a matter of time before there is an accident or some is seriously injured by being backed over. *tr

Since purchasing the 2008 saturn sky in september 2007 the brakes do not work when first starting the vehicle. the car must warm up before the brakes work properly. the car was brought back to the dealer several times and i was advised that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. recently the brakes failed when i had the cruise control on at 65 mph. the cruise did not shut off, the brakes did not even slow the vehicle. every time the car has gone back to the dealer they tell me that there is no problem. last week they advised that they had to re-calibrate the brakes- this did not work, i still have the problem when i first start the car, i have not used the cruise control since. *tr

My wife and i bought a 2008 saturn sky redline 2.0 turbo charged 3 weeks ago and on apr 17,2008 she was backing out of her parking spot at work and stepped on the brakes and the car kept moving narrowly missing a parked car behind her. she had to really stomp on the brakes and it slowed slightly and finally stopped inchs short of the parked car. i have read that gm seems not to have the fix for this. they say warm the car before moving. there was no mention of this issue at time of purchase. my question is does someone have to die before this gets taken care of. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 saturn sky redline. whenever the vehicle has been parked for more than 5 or 6 hours, there is poor power brake assist functionality. when the brake pedal is depressed, the pedal is extremely hard and causes the contact to apply more pressure to get the vehicle to stop. the failure was noticed while driving 5 mph. after a few minutes of the vehicle running, the brakes return to normal. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they reprogrammed the brake control module according to a gm service bulletin; however, that did not correct the failure. he took the vehicle to the dealer for a second time, but they were unable to determine the cause of the failure. the dealer has not responded or called back. the failure mileage was 50 and current mileage was 900. updated 09/10/08 *bf updated 09/10/08. *jb

2008 saturn sky (turbo redline 2.0) - the brakes are not 100% during cold startup - especially in reverse when the engine has just been started. it seems to help if you rev. the engine slightly, almost like you need to build some vacuum pressure because the idle was too low to achieve it. definitely not safe! *tr

Our saturn 2008 sky redline has a brake problem that my wife was complaining about every time she starts it up after it has had time to cool down. the brakes do not work properly. i tried it and found that the car can move while holding down on the brake. if you don't pump it it will not stop. i took it to the dealer today and was given a notification from the dealer service writer stating this was normal. they did take the car to check it out after i insisted. i don't care what they think is normal if i can't stop the car there is a problem. i then checked on line to see if any other sky owners were having the same type of problems. and i guess you know what is going on. this is to go on record with you that the car is not safe as is. i am concerned that this may lead to a problem during operation at speed and kill us. this needs to be dealt with now and and nat after someone dies. our car has gotten worse over the last month since the temperature has gone down. or it is just getting worse. *tr

I own a saturn sky redline 2008.. the brakes become ineffective after the car sits idle for an extended period of time overnight. this occurs every day when the car initially starts after sitting idle for a period of time. it is a safety hazard every time you start your car and attempt to drive off or back out of my driveway . the brake pedal becomes very difficult to use and the stopping response time is significantly increased. i have to be very careful that cars driving past my home are no where in site before i attempt to back out of my driveway or when i leave my place of employment no car is parked behind or in front of me. i took my car to the saturn dealership and reported the failure and the service technician printed out a service bulletin that states it is normal which instructs the dealer not to do anything. the actual wording highlights indicateimportant: do not attempt to repair or replace any parts for what is considered normal operation of the ohb...document id#1982132. i called saturn headquarters on september 27, 2007 and talked to customer service and they stated that they could not do anything about the failure and it should be expected with this vehicle...the woman handling the call would not give me any information on others experiencing this same problem. i also e-mailed saturn with my concern and will talk to a representative on monday, october 1. i feel it is a safety hazard and their response is unacceptable and that there should be a repair for the brake system. what if there is an accident and/or death..who will be responsible. *jb
