2006 toyota avalon. consumer writes in regards to vehicle remote starting device. smd the consumer stated her parents purchased a new vehicle back in 2006. the vehicle came equipped with a keyless remote starting system. all it took was to have the device in ones pocket and her father could get in the vehicle, press a button and the vehicle would start up. when her father arrived at his destination, all he had to do was, put the vehicle in park, press the remote button and the engine would shut off. on june 28, 2012, when the consumers father returned home, he parked the vehicle in the garage and went in the house. hours later, the consumers father was found deceased in the house from carbon monoxide poisoning. the smell of the poisonous gas was overwhelming throughout the house because after her dad took his packages out of the car and into the house, he closed the garage, and never shut off the remote starter button. from morning all through the day, carbon monoxide slowly seeped in the kitchen where the garage was attached, through the kitchen and into the den where her dad was sitting. the consumer stated had there been an automatic shut off system that activated after a preset time, when there was no weight in the driver's seat, much like the air bags on the passenger side, this senseless tragedy would have never occurred. *jb

Twice since we purchased this car, the torsion rod holders which hold the trunk lid open have failed, causing the lid to crash down abruptly. the first time occurred at about the date shown above. the problem was repaired. the second incident occurred on april 4, 2011(46,000 miles) shortly after my wife lifted the lid to remove some groceries. she narrowly escaped serious injury when it slammed down. she could have been killed. this is not acceptable. there must be a defect in the design which has caused this to occur twice. toyota should be forced to provide a permanent solution to this problem which i'm sure is not just limited to my vehicle.

2006 toyota avalon. hinges on bar in trunk that holds the trunk open broke off in novemeber 2009 (right after warranty expired). if you don't hold the trunk open with one hand it can slam down on you. already have had it slam down on my head, arm and son's arm. very painful, nice big bruises and mild concussion. took it to toyota and they were not very helpful at the end 2009 and then again in august 2010 and was told that i would have to pay at least $500.00 to get it fixed. i only use the trunk now if i have someone else with me as it is hard to hold open with one hand while loading and unloading groceries. would not recommend this car to anyone.

Failure of the hinges and torsion bars that are mounted for the trunck lid of my 2006 toyota avalon, limited. the torsion bar rotates into the trunk space about 5 inches and can hit items in the trunck and dislodge the the torsion bar and damage a weak mounting bracket. this failure is not graceful but immediate. upon opening the trunck with the torsion bar dislodged or the bar becomes dislodged the trunk can come back and hit you in the head or a child being held. i notified the dealer and toyota of the problem and was told that it was covered under the 36000/ 3yr warranty which i exceded. however, after several more contacts i was able to determine that there was a technical service bulletin bo030-06 issued in december 2006. my concern is that there was never any warning on limiting the useful space in the trunck nor any notification of the potential failure. my concern is that toyota new about this safety issue and was reluctant to acknowledge the problem and that there was a potential fix that may or may not be sufficient. no corrective action was provided.

In july 2009 our 2006 toyota avalonxl had a vvt-i oil hose explode causing oil damage and personal repair expense of $277.67. i was notified by toyota of a recall to replace this hose. it stated if already replaced then to send in the repair order, proof of payment and proof of ownership for reimbursement. this was submitted to toyota on january 11, 2010. no response was received until i contacted them after 71 days. after a lengthy delay, i was denied reimbursement becasue repairs were not completed by an authorized toyota dealer. my complaint is i am responsible for damages and repairs due to toyota's defective parts without reimbursement after toyota admitted their parts were defective.

My vehichle 2006 toyota avalon , since i had bought it has always excellerated so i would just slow it down (tapping on the brakes).i assumed this was normal since i did bring it to the dealership telling them. may 3, 2008 i was in a bad car accident on 75 north. at that time the vehicle accelerated and when i went to slow down the car it went into the guard rail and after that when i woke up my car splattered all over the freeway. i was fined by the police unable to control my car. went to court to fight it and i had to pay $140.00 plus they wanted me to pay for the damage on the freeway $3,000.00. i had to be cut out of the car and my vehicle was tottaled.

I was coasting into a parking stall in my 2006 toyota avalon when all of the sudden it roared very loud and sped forward into the parking sign that fortunately stopped the car. damage was done to the right front fender of the car. no injuries occurred. i hadan apppointment with the toyota dealer for repairs to be done for the recall items that same day even though i had not received a letter from toyota as of that date. the car damages was repaired at a body shop and then taken to the dealship for repair of the recall items. a letter from toyota was finally received about the recall after the fact.

Sudden acceleration. when first starting the engine, it revved up to about 2,500 rpms. a second episode occurred a few days later when i was driving downhill and my foot was on the brake. the vehicle suddenly accelerated to about 40 mph. at no time was my foot on the accelerator pedal in either situation. in both of these instances, the sudden acceleration resolved within a few seconds. these incidents occurred after safety recall work was performed by toyota on march 6, 2010. at this time, these are the only occasions where i experienced problems of this nature. i am concerned for the safety of my passengers and myself. i am in the process of reporting these problems to the dealership.

I think i experienced a surge in my 2006 toyota avalon. i was not sure but people observing that did not stay and wait for police said my car raced forward after stoped at a light. i ended up steerring to the right and hit a tree rather than the car ahead or pedestrians. when the police and tow truck arrived they indicated that my airbag should have gone off, but it did not.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. the contact was traveling at speeds of 5 mph, attempting to make a left turn when he heard an unusual noise coming in the engine area. immediately, the vehicle began hesitating and within seconds, resumed normal operation. on a separate occasion while driving in reverse, there was an unusual increase in the rpms. the vehicle then accelerated with a loud sound coming from the engine. the failure would occur whenever the vehicle was in operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on five separate occasions for the identical failures. the dealer was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failures. the failure mileage was 500. updated 06/04/10. *lj

2006 abalone with 63,000 miles, while i was driving in the highway my ac light flickered, then check engine light came on. i opened the hood there was no oil in the engine and the left side of the engine was covered with engine oil. there was a leak in the vvt oil line. toyota issued a tech tip tv12310 in septemberof 2008 recommending replacement of the oil line, but there was no recall on it . i have no idea if my engine survived this incident it is still in the shop waiting for estimate . *tr
