Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 avalon, model year 2007-2010 camry, model year 2009-2010 corolla, corolla matrix, rav4, model year 2010 highlander, model year 2008-2010 sequoia, and model year 2007-2010 tundra vehicles. due to the manner in which the friction lever interacts with the sliding surface of the accelerator pedal inside the pedal sensor assembly, the sliding surface of the lever may become smooth during vehicle operation. in this condition, if condensation occurs on the surface, as may occur from heater operation (without a/c) when the pedal assembly is cold, the friction when the accelerator pedal is operated may increase, which may result in the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.
Consequence SummaryThe accelerator pedal may become hard to depress, slow to return to idle, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a reinforcement bar in the accelerator pedal which will allow the pedal to operate smoothly. gm will notify owners for the pontiac vibe please see 10v-018. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin early february and will be completed in late april 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2010 passenger vehicles. the accelerator pedal can get stuck in the wide open position due to its being trapped by an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat.
Consequence SummaryA stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Corrective SummaryToyota filed an amended defect report on november 25, 2009, stating that dealers will modify the accelerator pedal and, on certain vehicles, alter the shape of the floor surface under the pedal. these changes address the risk of pedal entrapment due to interference with the floor mat. redesigned accelerator pedals will become available beginning in april 2010 and dealers will replace any modified pedal with the new pedal if desired. also, dealers will replace any genuine toyota or lexus all-weather floor mats with redesigned all-weather mats, or repurchase the previous mats from owners who do not want the new ones. additionally, software modifications will be installed on camry, avalon and lexus es 350, is 350 and is 250 models that will ensure that the brake overrides the accelerator in the event both brake and accelerator pedals are applied. toyota will begin mailing letters to owners in december 2009. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331, lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

On september 26, 2007, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that some of its model year (my) 2007 and 2008 lexus e350 and toyota camry vehicles could experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the optional all weather floor mat offered on those vehicles and the vehicles' accelerator pedal.this decision was influenced by an office of defects investigation (odi) engineering analysis.this recall was designated 07e082.two years later, on october 5, 2009, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that a number of its my 2004-2009 lexus and toyota vehicles may also experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver's floor mat.this recall was designated 09v388.several months later, on january 27, 2010, toyota filed an amended, or supplemental, defect information report and expanded the population of vehicles to include additional my 2008-2010 toyota and lexus vehicles.since this expansiontook place in a different calendar year, this recall was designated 10v023.separately on january 21, 2010, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that certain toyota vehicles and certain pontiac vibe vehicles contained a safety defect in the accelerator pedal assembly that may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return, or in the worse case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.nhtsa designated this recall 10v017.in total, the four recalls cover over 7.6 million toyota and lexus vehicles as well as the pontiac vibe product made by new united motor manufacturing, inc., a venture of toyota and general motors corporation.nhtsa requires additional information from toyota to more fully understand and evaluate, among other things, whether the scope of the recalls identified above (makes, models and model years) is sufficiently broad.the agency is seeking to determine whether toyota viewed the underlying defects too narrowly as interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver

2008 toyota avalon february 16th and 17th my car jolted forward at stop light. i was able to stop the car but, it did go about 50ft before i could control the steering wheel and stop the car. i had this serviced at lake norman toyota(704) 875-9199 earlier this month. upon calling in today about my car, was informed the repair had not been completed. why in the heck did the dealership tell me they could not find an issue and the car was drivable? my life and that of not only my family but others is at stake. i want action, truthfulness and accountability from toyota and the usa. *tr

My 2010 toyota avalon does infact accelerate on it's on when you are approaching a traffic light or stop sign. when you let off the gas and let it coast at about 20mph it will start to accelerate on it's own. i do not in any way believe this is a pedal problem. your investigators are welcome to drive it. i purchased the car on dec 31st. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota avalon limited equipped with a dynamic laser cruise control. while attempting to pass another vehicle with the cruise control engaged at speeds of fewer than 65 mph, the vehicle lost acceleration. the driver attempted to depress the brakes to shut off the cruise control, to no avail. the vehicle would not accelerate and she allowed the vehicle to drift off of the highway. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they could not duplicate the failure. no repairs were made to date to correct the failure. the cruise control mechanism had not been engaged since the incident. the failure and current mileages were 26,000. updated 03/12/10. *lj

 1. on three occasions the accelerator pedal was jammed open by factory cloth floor mat. removed the mat. 2. on multiple recent occasions when the car is started and placed in reverse to back out of a parking space the car will not move even if the accelerator is pressed. car seems as if the wheels are chocked. then when car does move it accelerate quickly in reverse. have discovered when this happens the traction control appears when the car is shifted into reverse and stays lit for a period of time, then the light goes out and the car simultaneously feels as if the brakes have been released even though the brake pedal was not depressed. it is easy to understand how a driver could press the accelerator to get the vehicle to move and then have the car shoot backwards causing damage or injury. 3. on three separate occasions while wearing boots i removed my foot from the accelerator and depressed the brake pedal only to have the vehicle instead of decelerating, accelerate very quickly. the reaction each time was to press the brake pedal even harder resulting only in the vehicle accelerating even harder. on one of those occasions it occurred backing out of a driveway and although i was able to stop the vehicle quickly it nonetheless accelerated several feet into the middle of a street. it is clear that these three incidents occurred because of the proximity of the brake and accelerator pedals and inadvertently but simultaneously depressing both. i believe the situation is aggravated by the fact when depressing the brake pedal you cannot feel the accelerator pedal under your foot and have no idea you are pressing the accelerator until you go through the mental process of trying to determine why the harder you depress the brake the faster the car goes. it is easy to understand why one might panic and stand on the brake pedal only to have the car accelerate to a very dangerous speed. my 190 mph motorcycle doesn't scare me, the venza does. *tr

2010 toyota avalon. consumer expresses discontent with recalls *tgw the consumer stated two unrelated recalls are on the same recall notice. the consumer requested that the brake/throttle reprogramming be done, but he does not want the pedal modification done as he believed it would cause a safety issue. the consumer stated presently, the pedal clearance to the floor is 1 3/4 inches and the pedal length is only 4 inches long in the vehicle. the floor mat is positively secured. the pedal/floor mat is not a safety interference condition. *jb
