Atlanta, ga, requires an emmission inspection each year. my 2002 camry xle has passsed with no problem in past years. when the inspection tester was hooked to the car it reported not ready codes in all test categories and the inspection could not be completed. i took the car to my mechanic and he could clear the computer and get it to reset but almost immediately the codes would start to drop off to not ready again. he was able to get it to set long enough to complete the inspection that passed properly and then the codes began to drop off again. calls to toyota have received no information on what to do to correct this problem.

The car accelerates at a high rate with little pressure on gas. it seems to happen at random times when the car is warm. i could be stopped at a red light then have it happen when the light turns and i step on the gas. it also has happened when accelerating while still moving ie: taking a corner while slowing then stepping on the gas once i have straightened out

2002 toyota camry. the consumer wants to be reimbursed for repairs. *dt the check engine light illuminated. the dealer stated there was a problem with the emission system. the problem was repaired and the consumer was charged $600.00. two days later, the light illuminated again. the consumer returned to the dealership, but the problem was not resolved. when the consumer stopped for gas, he noticed the gas tank would not fill up, the gas would spill out. the consumer went to another establishment and it was determined that a pair of pliers were on the vent of the gas tank. the dealership was contacted and the consumer was told a mistake was made by one of their mechanics. the second dealership replaced the vacuum switching valve. *jb

We have a 2002 toyota camry with a 2.4 liter engine with a 38, 900 miles in the odometer. and on march 4, 2010 my wife came home from a the grocery store asked me to check the car because of the check engine light iis on. i drove the car for a test drive around our neighborhood for five minutes with the speed of 10 miles to 15 miles an hour. before i came to the stop sign, the engine start racing, rpm is up the red line, i could hear the engine roar. i step on the brake hard, shift the gear hard into park and turn off the ignition. i was so lucky, i was driving in the right place and the right time with no traffic and kids playing on the street. if my wife would be driving at that moment especially she is an elderly like me, it could be big accident. it's a terrifying experience. i suggest that 2002 camry should be included in the recall. before somebody gets hurt. that same day i called toyota dealership for service appointment. *tr

I did not notice any malfunctions of my car prior to the event that i am reporting. in june of 2009 i was pulling into a parking space in a parking lot. my foot was lightly on the brake and i nearly at a complete stop when my car lurched forward like a rocket. my car jumped the curb of the parking spot, sideswiped a row of mailboxes on my left while traveling across an small island of lawn and shooting over another curb on the other side of the island. my vehicle came to a stop on the other side of the parking lot approximately 15 feet short of ramming the side of a parked car. both of my feet were on the brake pedal, both of my legs were fully extended with my knees locked and my entire body was fully extended with all of my weight applied to the brake pedal. i immediately placed the car in park and turned the engine off. the left front quarter panel of my car received minor damage from hitting the mail boxes. there was a witness from the veterinary clinic where the event occurred who saw the accident. because my foot was on the brake and not on the gas pedal i do not believe that this event occurred because of a mechanical problem with the accelerator pedal or floor mat. *tr

2002 toyota camry, stalls as coming to a stop or slowing down for traffic, turning or someone pulling in front of me in traffic. car will not start for 20 minutes. when trying to start car before 20 minutes it turns over but not start or has a hard time starting and sputters till i can pull over off the street and stalls in a parking lot. when i wait the full 20 plus minutes the car starts as if never had a problem. by the time i get to the dealer or another repair shop they can not find anything wrong or say it has to do with the emissions control and they do not guarantee that may be that problem & i may have to bring the car back in & i will not be refunded my money & will have to pay more out of the pocket. this has been going on for 2 years. it is worse in the heat & humidity (happens more often). *tr

When it is below 32 degrees f. outside the cars throttle body will freeze shut. this causes the car to not operate and the car needs to be placed in a warm environment to warm it to above freezing, and the car will operate well. this has been addressed in a service bulletin put out by toyota and to correct this problem it will cost approx $1200. this is a defect on the part of toyota. it is not because of age, and it is a serious problem. *tr

Tl*- the contact owns a 2002 toyota camry. she noticed gas fumes and a gas leak coming from the vehicle. the dealership informed the contact this occurred when the gas tank was overfilled. the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for repair. the mechanic informed the contact that the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. there have not been any other occurrences since the replacement. the current mileage was 70000. *ak the consumer stated she always topped of the tank and there was no where in the manual where it said it couldn't be done. updated 04//12/07. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the check engine light illuminated without incident. the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined the fuel filter needed to be cleaned and the fuel filler cap needed to be replaced. in addition, it was determined the fuel filter was corroded due to oxidization of the fuel filter material. the manufacturer was notified.

I noticed gasoline dripping from the rear of my 2002 toyota camry le at the rate of about a drop per second while it was parked with the engine off. the car had not been run for a day and a half and had about 3/4 of a tank of gas in it. the gasoline was dripping near the middle of the rear axle, about 2 inches from the exhaust pipe. i was afraid to start the car and after clearance by the local fire department, had it towed to a toyota dealer for repairs. the toyota dealer determined that the vacuum valve assembly had failed and that the charcoal canister assembly was filled with fuel. they replaced both the vacuum valve assembly and the charcoal canister assembly. i do not have the old parts. i had to pay for the full cost of the repairs as toyota said that my car was beyond the warranty period. *nm

I have a 2002 toyota camry with 42,608 miles. the check engine light went on yesterday. today i had the charcoal canister, hose and vacuum sealed valve replaced at great cost. now i have read that this was a problem with the 96-98 camry's and that the epa required toyota to extend the emissions warranty to 14/150000. *jb

I have a 2002 toyota camry. upon pulling into a parking stall i applied the brakes to slow down as normally done when parking. at this time the car lurched forward, the engine raced, the car hopped the curb and hit a building. i believe this could be tied to the current gas pedal recall. i have a witnesses that will attest to the fact that during this whole scenerio my brake lights were on the whole time. *tr

This accident occurred in my garage. i had backed the car out of the garage and left the engine running with the car in park while i removed the garbage container and upon returning to my car about 1 minute later, i placed my foot on the brake pedal and shifted the car into drive. immediately, the car accelerated forward at a very high speed and despite the fact that my foot remained on the brake pedal, it did not stop and crashed into the concrete wall at the rear of my garage. the air bags deployed minimizing my injuries. the car was totaled by my insurance company - the front end was badly smashed and the frame was bent. the total estimate to repair was in excess of $9000. the total travel of the car was 26 feet. i have no idea how fast the car accelerated to, however in the 60,000 miles that we had driven the car, i had never experienced this high degree of acceleration. please note that when i had first re-entered the car just prior to the crash, there was no indication of a fast engine idle at all. also, i observed after the crash that my foot was still on the brake pedal and there was no indication of anything lodged beneath the brake pedal. *tr

 1. loud creaking and rattles: after many attempts at repairs, the problem finally turned out to be a manufacturing defect. they left plastic assembly guides in place, which they had to remove by removing the window again (this was a super secret service bulletin that was divulged only when the customer engineer for new england showed up). but he dealership managed to chip the paint in the process, requiring the roof to be repainted. once the creak was gone, the interior rattles were unbearable from all the quality work completed. 2. transmission issue: i've been assured by the service manager at me dealership that it is normal the transmission take at least a mile shift out of second gear when below 30

Car died while traveling approximately 40 mph around a curve. power steering went out and car nearly hit the curb and several parked cars. took vehicle to toyota who refused to fix it under warranty, because they said it was consumer's fault that it happened. they said that fuel got into the charcoal canister, which they claimed to be evidence that consumer topped off at the gas pump. i told them that i never topped off (for environmental reasons as well as vehicle protection), and they said it also could have been because the car sat at an angle in the drive way but that they still wouldn't fix it. *tt
