I was driving at 70 mph on the interstate when the car stalled out. we were able to pull to the side of the road luckily. it did start again but stalled again if i went over 40 mph. i had replaced the transmission the week before and had a transmission place check it out. they said the transmission is fine and that the error code is for the ecm. i had taken the care back to my transmission place (certified transmission in bellevue ne.) and he had the same answer for me. i attempted to work with toyota on this through their customer complaint dept. they referred me to nick anderson (customer care manager) at bellevue toyota. he didn't care that the car is unsafe to drive or that it stalled on us going 70 mph on the interstate. all he cared about is that the care is over miles on the extended warranty (80,000) and he wouldn't do anything for me at all. i believe in companies that back there product and i no longer believe in toyota. i have found out that there is a very strong chance that the reason i had to replace the transmission on this auto is because of the ecm that was misdiagnosed as transmission issues. i believe this to be true because i am having the same stalling issues that i had before the new transmission was put in. i feel that toyota should at the very least repair/replace the faulty ecm at no additional cost to me.

The vehicle i believe has an ecm (engine control module) problem. since the first incident where the vehicle wanted to shut off at a stop light, the vehicle erratic rpm fluctuation when the vehicle is at a stop or hesitates when taking off. toyota has done a recall on some of the 2005 thru 2008 models and i believe this model should be included since it uses the same ecm and has the same engine as the other models

Car suddenly stalls, sometimes while at a stop but has happened when moving. won't start for a little while then will start. has happened 3-4 times in the past 5 months.

My 2004 toyota corolla suddenly had engine problems while driving, making a horrible metallic clanking as the car stalled. after having it towed to the nearest repair facility, the diagnosis was that pieces of the engine literally broke apart as if the metal was fatigued. the mechanic could not explain how this happened with only 117,000 miles on the car. it took over a month to find a used engine and scrape together the money needed for repairs. the entire engine was replaced, for a total of $2500. i was also forced to rent a car during this time, and the car rental amount is around $600.

My car on an intermittent basis will not start as well.....there is no cranking whatsoever. although upon turning the key all the lights on the dashboard light up in a normal manner, there is absolutely no sound from the engine. after either a few tries or roll starting the vehicle (manual transmission)....it will start. i brought it to the dealer once and they originally thought it was the battery, then the starter *which they proceeded to replace, then after a few days the same problem occurred again....i am bringing it back to the dealer. *jb

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 toyota corolla . while driving at 45 mph , the vehicle will start hesitating and wanting to stall. the contact will apply on the accelerator pedal so that the vehicle will not stall at all. the vehicle was taken in to the dealer where they stated that there was excess carbon build up in the throttle body from a new battery that was put in the vehicle. the dealer then performed a throttle body cleaning removing the carbon build up. the contact stated that with in the last 3 to 4 months the problem is still occurring. the dealer has not contacted and there have been no diagnosis and no repairs. the failure mileage was 33000 and the current mileage was 36000.cv

Engine will surge when at a stop and unless brake is fully depressed to the floor, vehicle may move forward. this surge is not consistent, occurring between 10-20% of the time and more likely to occur within the first 10 seconds of stopping at a light or to park vehicle after being on highways at higher rates of speed.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 toyota corolla. while driving at 55 mph, the engine began to make a loud noise and stalled. the contact pulled to the side of the road and took the vehicle to the dealership. the dealer ran a diagnostic test and stated that the throttle body assembly needed to be replaced. the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint; the manufacturer referred him back to the dealership for repairs. the current and failure mileages were approximately 22,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 toyota corolla. on june 1, 2007, the engine failed while idling at a stop light. the contact stated that the battery worked, but the check engine light never illuminated. on june 4, 2007, while driving up a hill and over a railroad track, the vehicle failed to accelerate above 50 mph. the vehicle began to shake. she tried not to put her foot on the brake in fear that the engine would fail again. when she reached the end of the hill, she pulled into a parking lot and the engine failed. she was able to restart the vehicle instantly. the contact turned the vehicle on and off for a period of twenty minutes and in that time frame, the vehicle failed every three minutes. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the contact stated that no one is ever in the vehicle with her when it fails and she is afraid that she may cause a crash. the engine size was unknown. the current mileage is 55,000 and failure mileage was 54,980.

My 2004 toyota corrolla seems to be steering improperly. upon turning the steering wheel to a straight position the whole car seems to swerve and become almost uncontrollable. i have just barely avoided serveral accidents and in wet condtions the problem is worse. i replaced the tires and had them check the alignment on the vehicle and it still continues to be an issue. i took the car to my dealer and was advised that they could not replicate the problem but have had at least four other persons drive the vehicle and they all have commented on the steering/control problem even passengers in the vehicle notice the problem as you can feel it while driving or riding in the vehicle. my dealer also states they did not see any broken or loose parts that would cause the control problem.

Unexepected surge of car at a traffic stop. i have a 2004 toyota corolla with 7500 miles, and on several occasions i have stopped at a light or pedestrian crosswalk with my foot securely on the brake pedal and in drive when the car would suddenly lunge forward. there is a potential for a major rear end accident or a pedestrian fatality. anyone with a similar problem please call me (al) at 203-929-6856. *ak

Unexpected and without warning while car is in drive and stopped in traffic or at red light, engine idle speed increases when compressor from heating/air conditioner unit engages (when heater/defroster or air conditioner are in use) resulting car to lunge forward. if hard and constant pressure is not applied at all times on brake pedal while stopped, car could lunge forward resulting in; rear-end collision with another car; auto/pedestrian mishap while stopped at a crosswalk or hitting another vehicle board side if at a four-way stop. this design defect needs immediate investigation by nhtsa and if found valid, require toyota to recall and repair all 2004 toyota corolla les at no cost to car owner. *la

2004 toyota corolla drive belt cracked at about 5k miles i have a 2004 corolla which is maintained regularly at darcars toyota of silver spring, maryland. when i had my car oil changed at mileage 53200, the service representative told and showed me that my car's drive belt has many, many cracks on it. they told me i need to replace it with a new belt and will be charged $210. toyota officially recommends an initial inspection of drive belt at 60k/72 months, 15k thereafter. it means before 60k miles there should be fine. i sent an email to toyota and asked them if my car has a quality problem. in their reply, they refused to answer my question. toyota is famous for their vehicle excellent quality, but it looks not in my case. *nm

I purchased a corolla ce in oct 2003. i had not had the car more than a month when i started to smell a sulfer(rotten egg) smell. i cotinued to smell this and it did not go away so i took it to the dealer. the dealer showed me a buliten that stated it was not the converter. the dealer then told me that american gas has too much sulfer content and the toyota addmissions were at a higher level then the american gas. i now have 15,000 miles on my car and the smell is still there. i went to trade it in today to get a corolla s model. the deal is not made yet, because i have read that the 2005 corollas have the same problems.

I bought the 2004 toyota corolla brand new, after purchasing the car i noticed a horrible rotten egg smell in the vehicle. i took it back to the dealer, to be told that i needed to try another gas station, i did and that did not fix the problem. i still continue to smell it and its bad. i was told that means the exhaust system is working properly....i think that is a poor reason for this horrible smell. the car also has a very loud rattling noise that comes from the front drivers side wheel. i've taken it to the dealer several times and nothing has been done to fix the problem. the car also pulls to the left..even after several alignments. i'm really disappointed because this was my first new car purchase. i purchased a toyota because of it's history of having very reliable cars. i'm sorry that i got this car. *jb

Foul egg/sulfur smell while car is operating. smell is noticeable in the interior and exterior of car. at times, this smell is so strong that i begin to feel ill. returned to dealer. dealer instructed me to try different gasolines. this did not work. returned to dealer. repeatedly spoke with service manager, etc. the suggestion to change gasoline was all the dealer could offer. this has not worked and i'm concerned that the sulfur smell may be causing a health problem.

2004 toyota corolla, close to 3,500 miles. purchased in july '03. when i run the heat inside the car, a very strong sulfur odor is emitted through the vents. was told it was the gas, not the car, by both dealer and toyota customer service. i do not get this smell in any other car i ride in, including the '96 corolla i traded in. this release of sulfur oxide into the car interior is a serious health concern that toyota seems to refuse to take an interest in. *la

2004 corolla bought 32 days ago with 92 miles. noticed sulfur smell when exiting vehicle only after first refill -- not noticed with fuel that came with it. dealer said to try different gas and to make sure that my entire tank is empty before filling. basically recommending that i wait. (they did say to fill the tank -- not just put in a couple gallons) after the second refill (and about 16 days since purchase) i noticed that the smell wasn't as bad, but a friend reminded me that it was particularly windy. i later noticed the smell when the wind calmed down. no luck with the third refill either. all of these are at different stations. called the dealer again and they recommended that i now try the higher-octane fuel. needless to say, the days are slowly passing. after talking with sales dept and the service dept about what can be done, they agreed to take it for a drive as soon as they learned that i smelled this from inside the car when driving. i sense that it is a more-serious matter if it gets inside your car. they gave me a loaner for the day -- another corolla le, which also smelled of sulfur. the service manager at the dealership said that he didn't smell anything at all when he drove my car, but he said that my air-freshener overwhelmed him. this leads me to believe that he is either lying to me (you can't mistake the smell of sulfur gas) or he has become desensitized to its odor. i have read that sulfur can weaken your ability to smell sulfur for some time. i don't know if the ability to smell sulfur comes back quickly or goes away for a long time. he explained to me that they couldn't do anything. he said it was (you guessed it) the gas. well, now my grace period has expired and i would lose at least $1,300 if i took it back and got the pay-off. if they didn't make me wait, i could have had 100% of my money back or a new corolla that doesn't smell. (incident date should be 2004 not 2003) *jb

Since i bought the car in sept 2003 it emitted a rotten egg smell through the vents. i went to arbitration in may 2004 and lost because they said that it was the design of the car. the toyota rep said that someone wou ld be caontacting me and that they were aware of the problem. no one contacted me and the dealer would not return my calls. the 800# continued to say it was the gas. i have suffered with horrible headaches and i lost my periphial vission on three ocasions. in feb 2005 i was pulled over sick form the odor and fi again called 800#, they again said it was the gas. i pleaded with the rep to help me and she called me back two days later with a new tsb that came out in may 2004. the dealer reprogramed the ecu and tech smelled odor so they ordered a new cat converter replaced that a reprogramed ecu again. they said it was an internal failure in my cat. if this was the case why was'nt my check engine light going off for the last year and a half? now i have an odor of bad exhaust coming through my vents and toyota wants me to put in the same gas 4xs. i don't feel safe in this car and i can';t imagine what driving with a bad cat for over a year has done to my health and my engine. i have asked toyota to issue me a letter saying that the car is safe since i transport children but they refused.*ak

I bought a 2004 toyota corolla from team toyota. it started emitting a rotten egg smell. we took it to the dealer on the first occurrence and we were guaranteed the smell would go away after the first 5000 miles. i thought that sounded fishy, so i did some research online. i found that many toyotas are emitting the rotten egg smell. so i contacted the dealer again. i told him about my findings. i also told them how aggravated i was with them about lying to me. low and behold they were aware of the problem the asked me to bring the car in again to be checked. after the car was looked at a second time. i was told that toyota was aware of the problem and that it was the gas and that they are not going to address this issue with me any more. i was even given a letter stating toyotas stance on the rotten eggsulfur smell issue. i have since contacted a lawyer and im in the process of suing. (there is more to the story but you get the idea). *ak after more research i have found that: epa has been made aware of concerns regarding sulfur odors. it is my understanding that in 2002/2003 toyota replaced the nickel based catalytic converter lining with a non-nickel containing compound in order to reduce the exposure of its employees. nickel is a toxic compound. we believe that new lining currently in use, specifically in 2003 and later toyota models, does not handle the sulfur in gasoline as well as the former nickel compound. therefore resulting in the sulfur odor you are noticing in your vehicle.*ak

Bought the car new on 8/30/03. has had a sulphur gas smell at low speed & when stopped in traffic inside the car. this happens with the windows up & either heat or air conditioning on. it makes no difference when the controls are set to recirculate inside air instead of fresh air intake. called dealer 1st time, they said catalytic converter needed to burn in some. after some time, the smell hadn't changed, i took it to their service dept. they found no problem, said to try a different brand of gas & also try higher octane. i have tried all the major brands of gas & mid-grade & premium gas (which the owners manual said is not required), with no change noticed. we called toyota customer service, who said to call the dealer customer service, which we did twice with no response. called toyota customer service back with this information & they said we could try arbitration but they had not seen the manfacturer do anything for this problem. this is an ongoing problem & extended intake of sulphur fumes cannot be healthy for anyone. the incident date is the date the dealer checked the car.*ak

I own a 2004 toyota corolla (45,000 miles) and the check engine light illuminated, (read code p0456, emission control evap small leak). my investigation revealed that there were many other vehicles with the same issue and toyota has corrected this problem with replacing the fuel filler tube at the owners expense (approx. $300.00). should this not be a recall due to the vehicle being only 2yrs old and a emission problem, that has happened to many other consumers? i feel toyota should step up and replace part at no cost to owner, the car is too new to have problems. *nm
