I put the key in the ignition, started the car and turn the heater. a couple of second went by i started smelling something burning. that made me turn off the car and get out of the car. when i got out the car i didn't notice any smoke coming from the engine. a thought came to mind that maybe it was another car passing by. so as i just got in my car, within 15 seconds of driving out of the parking garage i noticed smoke coming out the power window switch and within the window cracks. i was so startled and didn't know what to do. i put the driver side window down, stopped the car and call 911. this incident could have caused me to have an accident due to the traffic and because i thought my car was on fire. the fire dept. checked my car, they smelled the odor and told me just to take it to the shop. when i got to the toyota dealership they informed me there wasn't a recall. so i decided to research it and i found a article stating that the power-window switch on the driver's side didn't have grease applied evenly during production, causing friction in the switch and sometimes smoke, according to toyota. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505145_162-57529367/massive-toyota-recall-due-to-faulty-window-switch/ which stated recalls due to the similar problem i encountered. i showed it to the toyota serviceman and he came to about 30 minutes later and stated that there is nothing they could do. on february 19th, 2013 i contacted toyota corporate office and they informed me that my corolla vin number wasn't chosen for the recall. every owner that owns a toyota listed should have gotten a letter informing them about the recall no matter what vin number was chosen!

Have a 2005 toyota corolla s. took vehicle in 12/10 to replace part that was due to recall. check engine light was still on. toyota said intake gasket needed to be replaced. replaced intake gasket on 2/26/11. on 3/3/11, check engine light came on again. toyota said there is an issue with the computer or the transmission and it would probably have to be replaced.

Roughly a month ago, our 2005 corolla with about 40,000 miles suddenly stalled while traveling southbound on a major road. the engine cut out without warning. there were no injuries. the engine trouble light illuminated. turning the ignition again, the car would start for a few seconds and stall out again. a few times, upon trying to start the car again, it would not start at all. the car would not run and needed to be towed to a mechanic. the car gave no signs of trouble before the stalling incident. the camshaft sensor, crank sensor and engine control computer all needed to be replaced, according to our mechanic. i do not believe the old parts are still available.

Our 2005 toyota corolla (102,000 miles) experiences very hard automatic shifting that makes it sometimes difficult to control while driving. this just happened suddenly. at first the problem was just intermittent, but now it happens every time the car changes gears. we researched online and saw this is a very common problem with 05-07 toyotas of certain models, and that it's due to a faulty ecm. unfortunately, toyota refuses to replace the ecm, which is the only ($1000+) solution.

Suddenly my check engine light came on and when i went to get it checked out i was told it was a dtc p2716 code, a harsh shift and m.i.l. on problem. since i had done my research and found this problem to be common in 2005 toyota corollas, i expected them to replace the ecm for me. however, given that my car was just past 89,000 miles and the warranty ended at 85,000, the dealership told me there is nothing toyota would do. my car exhibits the harsh shift problem regularly and now my plates have come up for renewal and i cannot pass an emissions test given my check engine light being on. i cannot afford to just replace the unit and i believe that since toyota is aware it is a widespread problem, they should be recalling the part for consumer satisfaction. i have been a loyal toyota consumer since i began driving but i have lost my respect for the company given the circumstances of my newest toyota and how they have been completely uncooperative in helping rectify the situation (knowing it is a defect on their part).

Complaint on 2005 toyota corolla: ecu engine control unit. our 2005 corolla's ecu failed once at approx 40k miles (4k over warranty). the unit failed completely causing the car to lose power while driving. the car also shifted gears randomly when restarted, including shifting itself into reverse while in drive! we had to pay for a new unit as it was out of warranty. it was replaced with newer ecu (i think from an 06 corolla). however, now at 80k it just failed again (that's 40k on the ecu again). it failed while it was in drive, again causing a lose of power. once again we will have to pay to replace it. i've never filed a report before. but apparently this is a common problem. i was instructed by this website to file a report. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201631&page=4

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota corolla. the contact stated while driving at speeds of 30 mph through a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart and maintain control of the vehicle. the failure would occur intermittently. in addition, when in the reverse position the vehicle would shift extremely hard and the air conditioner had become inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who advised that the central computer system was defective. the manufacturer would not provide any assistance. all repairs would be at the expense of the owner. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000 and the current mileage was 99,000.

2005 toyota corolla going 60 miles per hour on a highway suddently went to 30 miles per hour and the check engine light came on. luckily no one too close following the car. drove to toyota dealership and the next day they replaced the computer for the second time.

The symptom of problem presents itself while driving all of a sudden i will lose power and the car sputters and chugs. today, for instance, i was driving 65mph on the highway, and i lost power and nearly was rear ended and i tried to navigate across traffic to get to the side of the road. sometimes the car will just stall and completely go dead and other times i can try and tap the gas pedal a few times to try and get it through the chugging. also - while driving the tachometer is jumping all over the place. it has stalled while i was waiting at a red light. it stalls/loses power at any speed or if i'm stopped. i've taken it to three places and all three say the ecm is bad is needs to be replaced. when i called the toyotal dealership they would not cover the replacement because my 2005 toyota corolla has 90k miles on it and they'll only cover it if it has 80k miles or less (8yr or 80k miles - whichever comes first)..

Failure of engine control module (currently refered to as ecu by toyota technicians). this is the second failure of this component for this vehicle. this failure has caused my car to buck significantly on upshifts of the automatic trans. part was originally replaced in 2006 under guidelines of tsb tc014-06. tc015-07 refers to the same problem and was issued after repairs to my vehicle. toyota refuses to acknowledge the continuing failure of this part.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i have had a variety of electrical problems show up in my 2005 corolla ce, [xxx]. they began about july 2009 and continue to this day, in july, the car was hard to start on hot days. it may be corrosion at the battery ground or it may be something more serious. then, about the 1st of january, the electric locks failed to work. about the 20th of january, they worked again. this suggests that the ecm is subject to water exposure, and corrosion....which will lead to other, perhaps dangerous, fails. for at least 6 months, the passenger safety bag light has been on. this too, suggests some type of weather exposure to a flawed design. it is dangerous because it could mean the safety bag might trigger spontaneously while the car is in motion...thus triggering an accident that could kill me, any passengers, and it could cause an accident involving other vehicles...risking the lives of many others. my final electrical problem began on/about 1 march of this year. my engine fault light went on and remains on. i did check all fluids on the top of the engine and found them to be okay. i don't feel safe in this car and it is now sitting in my car port. i won't drive it until i can find out what the problem is. i am even afraid to drive it to the aamco business for the free diagnostic check that they offer. instead, i just bought a diagnostic tool to help me figure out if the car is safe. i almost forgot. last summer, the odometer set itself back by about 25,000 miles. this is another indicator of an electrical problem. *tr

When @ intersection and or passing it. i would get a check engine light alone with a engine stall @ 15mph and 30mph it repeats itself at theese speeds and @ 2500-3000rpm when accelerating from a stop. i have look online to what the problem is and have found an article http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/18/followup-toyota-considering-stall-fix-for-1-2m-corolla-and-matr/ i have read the blog and it seems that i'm not the only one whom has this problem but some 1.2million (corolla and matrix models from 2005, 2006 and 2007) people are experiencing the same effect of and bad ecu problem that what sounds like to me a defect and most like a health hazard if lets say myself or one of the 1.2million ppls whom also have the same so called by toyota - inconvenience to owners. i would say my life is important and other would agree with me. i would like to toyota recall the part that they know is causing the problem and replace it for a new non-defective part that has the correction applied to them so that this does not happend again. as i do really like my car and would love to keep my family safe while driving their cars.

On december 24, 2009. my 2005 toyota corolla accelerated full throttle on its own. i quickly put the vehicle in nuetral and turned the ignition off. i called the toyota dealer where the vehicle was purchased and they told me to remove the floor mat. i told them the gas pedal was about 3-4 inchs away from the floormat. next i called aaa and had the corolla towed to the dealer. i recieved a call from the dealer and they confirmed the vehicle was accelerating on its own. they called me saturday december 26, 2009 and told me the engine control module failed and was replaced. the vehicle seems to be running ok now.

This is in regards to my 2005 toyota corolla. the computer (brain) to the car went out. just one day i was driving and i came to a red light. when i stopped, the car just completely turned itself off. i tried to restart the car and it would not restart. it had the sounds of a dead battery trying to start but it wouldn't turn over. so i was stuck at the light until a tow truck came to get me. upon taking it to a repair shop, i found out that the computer had gone out. i was then told that they had a notice out to all mechanics so if a car came into there shop, they would know what the problem was. i then contacted toyota who told me that i was 8,000 miles over the warranty that they had set to replace this defect. i tried numerous times to get them to replace it and they flat out denied me. i know my car wasn't the only one with this problem. when i told them that i felt it was a safety issue, they just told me there wasn't anything they could do for me. my reasoning for it being a safety issue has to do with the fact that when that part goes out, the car will just turn off and you are stuck. i was lucky enough to be at a light. what if i was on the freeway? i would of been struck from behind from the other cars that were behind me going 65mph. after arguing with toyota and getting nowhere, i ended up paying over $700.00 to have the part replaced so i could once again use my car to get to work. i feel that toyota should of been responsible for this, since they knew they had a problem with them and they should of been willing to replace the part no matter how many miles were on the vehicle. *tr

Ecu or ecm in 2005 toyota corolla defective, causing various problems, mine was transmission problem ,but my transmission was okay the ecu or ecm was causing the transmission not to shift right,.upon talking to dealership thousands of units replaced and there are several online issues of this part malfunctioning, warranty covers to 80,000 miles but if over that it is a $800.00 repair for a part toyota knows is bad, had part replaced at my expense i,don,t feel the consumer should have to pay for this... *tr

 P2716, ecm problem. *tr
11/02/2009820001
I own/drive a 2005 toyota corolla ce. starting last year (2008) it began stalling while driving. the first time it stalled as i was taking a right turn into the parking lot. later in the summer of 2009 the ecm had to be replaced as soon as the vehicle reached 80,000 mi. (which is just over the warranty limit). i thought that maybe the previous incident was related to the ecm. however, this fall the problem started again and the car stalled while driving 30 mph on a local street. every bump began to make the lights flicker and the engine stall. sparks came out from under the hood every time i hit a deviation in the road. i went to a nearby local shop and they said it was related to a broken piece holding the battery. they removed the broken bracket and the problem seems to have stopped. during that drive it probably stalled about 10 times. the problem has not occurred again, however, i cannot express how awful it was to be driving with two children in your back seat in a vehicle that is supposed to be safe while it stalls and you have to quickly maneuver to the side of the road. of course toyota does not have any interest in helping me while i am above my warranty. i think that this issue along with the ecm needing to be replaced at warranty expiration is enough for me never to purchase another toyota vehicle ever again. *tr

On december 11, 2008 my daughter drove my car to her part time job, she called and told me that the car stopped on her as she pulled into the parking lot of the bank, but started back up. that afternoon upon leaving the bank, the car stopped again. she called and stated that she saw smoke coming from the car. with in minutes the car was in flames. the fire department was called, but they were unable to put out the flames before the car completely burned, leaving bare metal, all the windows were shattered.. the flames were so hot that window of the store broke. *tr
