On august 26, 2010, toyota submitted a defect information report to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) regarding problems with engine control modules that could result in engine stall while driving in certain model year (my) 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla, corolla matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive and manufactured between april 19, 2004 and january 2, 2008.toyota's report indicated that cracks may develop at certain solder point or on varistors on the ecms.according to toyota, such cracks generally resulted in engine warning lamp illumination, harsh shifting or engine no-start.in some cases, if the cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.toyota will notify owners of subject vehicles that they should return their vehicles to a toyota or pontiac dealer.dealers will be instructed to inspect the production number of the ecm for each vehicle and replace the ecm if necessary.on november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request, submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible conditions with ecms used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles:1) cracks forming between the ic and the board caused by an improperly cured conformal coating applied to the circuit boards after the soldering process is completed; and 2) cracks occurring in a variable resistor (varistor) due to overheating.during the manufacturing process a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor.between march and august 2010, toyota began collecting ecms from the field to further investigate failure modes that may result in engine stall.toyota also conducted durability testing on ecms collected from in-use vehicles to assess whether the problems may be a continuing trend. in addition, they conducted durability testing in order to assess whether this problem was a continuing trend.toyota found that 4 of 32 collected ecms malfunctioned after thermal shock testing.toyota also confirmed that cracking could develop at solder points on the ecm circuit board that could lead to engine stall while driving and that this trend was likely to continue.the manufacturer failure data in this resume is limited to my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.based on toyota's recall, this engineering analysis has been closed.

On november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stalling, while driving model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible causes of production defects of the engine control units (ecu) used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corollas and matrixs.failure mode a1 - bga ball failure caused by improperly cured conformal coating applied to circuit boards. this can cause cracks to form in the soldered joints of some components. failure mode a2 - varistor over heat, a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor during its production process.in the case of an insufficient coating, a crack can occur in the surface of the glass coating. when ions are charged in the plating electrolytes after the glass coating process, the plating electrolytes can penetrate into the varistor through the glass crack then an electrical short occurs. with respect to these failures, if the condition arises, it can potentially lead to one or more of the following: mil on, engine stall, engine no start, or harsh shifting.an engineering analysis has been openedto further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with the failure of the ecu that can result in engine stalling.

While driving on 55 south freeway exit from 91 west to my work, my car suddenly stopped responding. it started jerking and suddenly stopped the engine. luckily traffic wasn't that fast otherwise it could have created a big pile up behind me. i pulled over to the right shoulder and stopped. i tried about 3-4 times to start, but it did not crank at all. so i called the tow truck and towed to nearby firestone in orange, ca. they first suspected may be the bad battery, and checked and replace the battery but still didn't start. so they did complete diagnosis and found that fuel wasn't reaching to the engine due to fuel pump failure. they recommended to changed the whole fuel pump assembly and charged me about $1100. they told me that there has been known issues on 05 toyota corolla for fuel pump failure and they knew in 2005 and issued notice too. i have bought this brand new in '04 august from toyota in claremont, ca. at least they should have notified us via email or postal mail since they knew about it, than i could have gone to dealership and have them checked for it. now, i am stuck with the $1100 bill. that is rediculous how careless toyota is. no wonder, they had so many recalls last year 2011. i just want the toyota to know about it and send me the money i paid to firestone. i have googled online, and found so many blogger who had issue with the fuel pump. so it has been still going on and toyota is not doing anything about it. they should fix the issue right away, it's a manufacturing defect. why they wait until people die????

Toyota issued a technical service (#ac002-06) bulletin regarding the condenser not being properly protected for the 05 and 06 corolla models. they said that you could take the car to the dealership and they would install netting around the condenser- but if it is already broken- then you are out of luck. mine has been broken for two years-now i am now spending over $500 to replace the condenser and my co-worker drives an 06 model and hers has been broken for a year. this is a safety concern for people driving in extreme heat. we are taking a family trip to nv this weekend, so i had to bite the bullet and get mine fixed, but this is ridiculous. how can they admit a design flaw and then not fix it:( also- my car lost 4 hubcaps within 2 weeks from purchasing it and i have noticed several others around town with the same problem. while i got some cheap ones to replace the ones i lost- having your hubcaps fly off is a definite safety issue and concern. *tr

In summer, corolla experience harsh shifting and indicator light came on. ecm replaced in july - approx one month before recall occurred. at the time of correction, car was at nearly 91,000 miles - research ecm issues online, contacted toyota and they stated since it was out of warranty they had no obligation to cover ecm repair. recall released within one month of ecm repair. less than 60 days later, took corolla back to dealership..car still experience harsh shifting. after paying $225 for a transmission flush, and dealer shifting transmission manually, the dealer stated ecm works fine, transmission will need to be replaced at +$3k. researched and identified similar problem in toyota rav4 - ecm failure led to transmission failure. filing complaint because i think toyota needs to pay for my new transmission. at current time, transmission not fixed..want an explanation, if the component that tells the transmission to shift accurately isnt working, then why doesnt toyota recognize that the transmission has the potential to not work properly - if prblem occurred in rav4, why not corollas? now that ecm is fixed, transmission is still damaged from prior ecm failure.

My 2005 toyota corolla, its engine warning light was illuminated in 2007. then the car dealer replaced the computer system. in 2008, as the losing control, the car slid out of the road and hit the tree. in 2009, the warning light was illuminated again, this time they changed gaskit and found the air can enter the engine and caused the engine problem (lose power and can't drive more than 30mph). since then, we experienced such problems three times: when we drive, the car can suddenly lose power and can't drive more than 30mph, but it become normal and the mechanic worker can't find the problem the next day. we think this problem is very dangerous and need to report to your company.

The problem started about 6 months ago - while shifting my 2005 corolla (typically when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and then from 2nd to 3rd gear). in order to not make my car stall - i would just give it a lot of extra gas to ensure that it wouldn't stall. the problem occurs regularly - almost every time i drive (about 1 time a week). the problem only occurs when starting and stopping and shifting in the low gears. after this problem started in feb of 2010 - i took the car to a toyota dealership. they hooked the car up to a computer and said it was fine. the dealership said they also took the car on a drive to see if it would do it then, and they claimed it didn't. so nothing was done at the that time. when i left the dealership, the car continued to shift harshly.

2005 corolla, 60,000 miles: check engine light came on. car went into safe mode (idle speed) while doing 65mph. toyota replaced throttle body and the next day it did the same thing. toyota said the new' throttle body they put in was defective. it's still at toyota waiting for another throttle body. this is a very dangerous situation. pulling out into traffic you do not know if it is going to go into safe mode or not, and of course, going down highway 50-70 mph there is a good chance of being rear-ended. this is not a safe situation. *tr

It was windy on january 24, 2011 i was on a highway headed to great falls, montana when right outside of havre, montana a semi-truck driver hauling a load drove by me and a rock hit my car. i pulled over in havre, no rock chips on my windshield of the body. i opened the hood and on my a/c condensor was a dent. i thought it would be okay. but, since then my car leaks fluid in the front where the condensor is. there is nothing protecting the condensor from any rocks, etc. i have not driven the car. my brother is a mechanic and said it should be looked at by toyota. i read about the tsb ac002-06. and am demanding toyota fix the condensor and fix the gap so my car will be protected from this happening again. also, i took my toyota for the last recall to havre, mt i do not want to go there anymore. i had a 12:30 p.m. appointment instead they took a woman who walked in after us in first. i was uspet she didnt have to wait and we drove 3 hours to get there. thank you..

I have what would seem like a safey issue. the a/c condenser on my 2005 toyota corolla failed, after researching the issue toyota has issued a technical service bulletin indicating that the a/c condenser is not properly protected the number for this report is ac002-06. i live in south texas and this issue is a know problem but nothing has been done.

The air conditioning condenser is mounted in front of the radiator and is not protected from road debris in any measure. once hit by a small rock or similar item the condenser has to be replaced for about $600. a service bulletin issued by toyota advises installation of a deflector shield which comes with the replacement condenser from the dealer. simple correction of this problem is installation of a deflector shield before the problem arises. air conditioning is a possible hazard in hotter areas of our country as will as the condenser does not work when using defrost or defogging on the windshield which is a sight hazard. your assistance is greatly appreciated. *tr

I got my car in 2005 and i has nothing but 30 thousand miles, when i got it ran well and still does. the air conditioning works for 20 minutes then turns off and turns back on and from what i hear im not the only one. when i say it turns off i mean it blows lukewarm. i think toyota needs to do a recall because this is ridiculous on a fairly new car! *tr

Vehicle air conditioner stopped working. toyota dealer diagnosed problem as a/c condenser must have been hit by a rock. cost to replace is $770.00. the vehicle has no protective covers to prevent this from happening. toyota has now placed protective covers on later model vehicles to prevent this problem from happening in the future. *tr

This complaint is based on two instances of my corollas condenser breaking down because of rocks hitting it while driving. last year my wife asked me to look at the ac of our corolla as the ac was not blowing cold air. she took it to the totoya dealer in duncanville, tx and they told us that the condenser was not covered and we had to pay $600 to fix. we chose to buy the condenser elsewhere and to install it myself. now a about a year later, we ran out of cold air again. i did not think it was the condenser. what is the likelihood that a replaced new condenser goes bad. we went to auto zone to get a recharge kit and sealer. after applying them there still was no cold air and their is a visible leak on the front region where the first condenser also suffered damage. searching for replacements on the internet i came across several people that had the same problem and no solution from toyota other than to pay to replace the condenser. toyota even admits this in technical service bulletin ac002-06 lower grille mesh protection cover. in the intro it reads some customers may experience damage to the a/c condenser if the vehicle is used regularly. i do not believe i should have to pay for something they should have fixed so i don't have to replace my condenser every year or maybe more frequently. they should pay to repair my damage and to install the cover to protect it from now on. our is corolla 2005. *tr

A/c condenser failure. design failure. had to replace unit twice before i made my own shield.. no help from dealer. you would think that if they had a defective design and fixed it on the next years model that they would take care of any prior complaints.. just shows that service and customer retention is not part of their creed. my recommendation to my friends has this story with it now that i know that others are in the same situation. good luck. hello nissan and honda. *tr

On 11/9/2010 at 5:30 p.m., my 2005 toyota corolla ce stalled on i-87 (ny state thruway--major deegan) in the bronx as it was being driven at 55 miles per hour. the car was operating normally when i left work in the bronx 20 min before. all of a sudden the check engine light came on and the car lost all power. the oil and battery lights also came on. i put on my hazards and managed to get from left lane to shoulder. the car stopped completely before i could get it off the highway and the back end of car was slightly on the road. i called aaa and they called the official company who has to tow cars off the thruway. no truck arrived for a long time--two passers by stopped and helped me push car onto shoulder. the car lights dimmed and eventually went out. the car had plenty of fuel when it was being driven. after the car stopped, the car seemed electrically dead and would not turn over at all. there was no sound at all or any cranking or sputtering. it seemed that the car lost all power and i was only able to get it off the road due to its momentum from being in motion. when no truck arrived after 45 minutes, i called 311 for assistance (nyc help line) and they contacted police who came and called another truck and sat with me with their lights on until tow truck arrived around 6:50 pm. it was towed to official towing station in bronx. the repair people told me the next day it might be due to an electrical problem. my car is under recall for the engine control module (ecm). the toyota dealers in bronx said cars don't stall because of this problem and i would have to pay to have my car towed there to have it checked. i wanted them to look at it to see if ecm was the problem. on 11/11, when i called the official towing station to have car towed out, they said it was fuel pump and wanted 1100-1200$ to fix it. as of today, i am having the car towed to a local repair station where i leave to see if they can diagnose the problem and let me know what caused the stall.

The engine stalled lots of time when i used brake to stop at a stop sign, or when i drove at low speed in traffic, such as 1 to 5 mile per hour. i had to press gas at a stop sign while i put the car in parking position to keep the engine alive. it took the dealer more than one month to fix it. the first time the dealer returned it to me and told me the problem had been fixed, the car stalled within 200 ft after i left the dealer. i walked back and told the dealer. the dealer told me to drive it back to home and let the computer learn by itself. i did as the dealer told me but the car stalled as before. i had to bring it back to the dealer. dealer changed the computer for me. the engine-stall problem is solved. right now, the car (most probably the engine) still vibrates/shakes strongly when i stop the car at the stop sign, at the red light, and drive the car at very low speed (such as 1 to 5 mile per hour).

The heater in our car was malfunctioning, it would take 15-20 minutes before it would get warm, we took it to the toyota dealership( roughly 03/31/2010 ) where we purchased it ( and they have done all the maintanence, oil changes, transmission flush, etc. ) they looked at the car and just said that it needed some coolant and that was it. the heater worked for just a couple days and then the heater began doing the same thing again. on the night of 04/17/2010 while driving home the engine got very hot all of the sudden, we pulled over and purchased some more coolant and put it in the car , drove the car home and then on monday 04/19/2010 we took it back in to have them look at it again and they said that there is a crack right down the middle of the engine block and that is why the coolant keeps draining. they told us we need to have the engine replaced. it is a 2005 corolla with only 79,000 miles on it. we were 4,000 miles past our extended warranty. they said since they haven't seen this before that they would give us brand new engine but we would have to pay $ 2274.00 for labor and a thermostat. it is curently at tony divino toyota in riverdale , utah being repaired.

This complaint is concerning my 2005 toyota corolla on the 11th of march 2010 while driving down the highway at approximately 60 miles an hour i went to accelerate to change lanes. as i pressed on the accelerator my car did not respond, and began to slow down. i turned the wheel to pull over to the shoulder and realized that i did not have power steering, thus confirming the overall stall. i managed to get to the shoulder and after about a minute i tried to turn the key and the car came back on. i was able to drive to don davis certified toyota parts and repair. after running a three hour diagnostic was reported to me that nothing was wrong with the car. the computer showed no signs of any type of glitch or malfunction. i returned home, only to find a report several days later about corollas suddenly stalling. *tr *dt

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle intermittently stalled. the vehicle restarted after 5 minutes following every stalling incident. additionally, the engine sometimes required several attempts before starting after the vehicle has been sitting for an extended period of time. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer for inspection. the dealer replaced the fuel pump, although that did not remedy the problem.

Rpm's increase when my foot is on the brake and the force of the rpm increase decompresses the brake pedal and my foot slips of the brake pedal. i have not experienced an accident due to this but it worries me that it may. this happens on a daily basis. i heard this may be normal but now reading that other people experienced this, i plan to get it checked. aside from this, there is dash board rattling, seal issue with windows because they whistle and also paint flakes off from a small ding. *nm

2005 toyota corolla did not pass emissions inspection. car taken to lia toyota, northampton, ma. dealer said car computer needed to be replaced but had to order part from toyota. so far it's been two weeks and the part may be delivered in another two weeks per toyota. over 1600 of these computers are on backorder with no delivery date supplied. i will have to pay for another emissions inspection, could e stopped by police and have my insurance increased for six years. i feel this is a known defect and toyota is not really responding to me or other customers and because the pert (very expensive) cannot be supplied before 4/30 i am incurring additional expenses. it should not take a month to get a part. the dealership is waiting for 12 of these computers and is being shipped two and has 3 cars that don't even run. *tr

We bought a 2005 toyota corolla in july of 2004. we have been extremely happy with the way the car runs mechanically never having any issues. our vehicle is currently at 40,310 and we are experiencing a failure with the charcoal canister. in order to pass emissions for the state of nc we have to replace this particular part. since our car is no longer covered under our basic 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty we are having to replace this part on our own. this is very discouraging since our vehicle is only 4,000 miles over our basic warranty coverage. this problem has occurred with many other toyota corolla vehicles around the same mileage. we feel this needs to be looked into because it seems odd that the charcoal canister fails around this mile marker in numerous vehicles. this is a component of the car the contributes to keeping our air clean. toyota is failing to provide a car that will do so. *nm

Purchased 2005 toyota corolla in august 2004. the car has had a consistent smell of rotten eggs (sulfur), almost daily with it worse when the car idles & after car shutoff. dealer said try premium gas, which i did and no effect. dealer said toyota had no knowledge or suggestions about problem, although i am aware of a 5/28/04 service bulletin for 2003-2004 corolla's for the exact problem. dealer also said it could not be the catalytic converter because the dashboard light wasn't on, yet toyota just settled a 2 million law suit for the dash lights not coming on and emission defects were not being picked up with regular code testing. dealer mentioned a number of other persons brought their car in lately for same thing but suggested it was related to our current cold weather. when i mentioned the problem with my car has persisted since late august, a week after i bought the car, the dealer suggested the smell was from bad gas & the wind probably blew it into the car. my understanding is that this smell has been a very significant problem with corolla's (& some other cars) and a number of 2005 owners on various discussion boards have also reported it. sometimes, the smell is so strong that i have to put the window down & i wonder what the constant exposure to sulfus will do to my allergies and asthma and why i should continue to pollute the air with sulfur everyday while toyota 's dealers treat me as if i am some neurotic patron. *nm

I own a 05 corolla xrs. i have had a problem with metal tearing issues. first one was the muffler bracket tore off and so my muffler was just hanging there. i had that welded at a muffler shop and it has fixed the problem for now. second is my trunk latch, this is the part that is bolted to the body of the car that the trunk latches onto. this piece has completely tore out of the body, it has been rewelded a few times but it can't be welded anymore. i keep it tied closed and can't use my trunk. now today 9-26-2007 is the last draw, the muffler bracket has completely broke in half and not were it was welded. i feel this is a very cheaply made car and will never buy a toyota again. i am extremely disappointed and the dealer tells me it i out of warranty and they don't want nothing to do with it, i keep getting told to see a body shop. i don't have $1,000.00 to replace the rear panel of my car every time the trunk latch decides to tear out of the body because the metal is to thin. *tr
