This is the 2nd time the computer ecu unit failed. my daughter drove the car to performance collision for some body work repairs. the body shop called to inform us that they couldn't complete the repairs because the car wouldn't start. i called aaa who towed the car to performance toyota. after they inspected the vehicle the technician manager told me that the ecu unit failed again and this time it was out of warranty. i had to pay $725.74 and performance toyota again replaced the ecu unit. toyota replaced the initial ecu on august 25, 2008 ( i filed a separate complaint) under warranty. i explained to toyota that a computer should not have to be replaced at all and out of all the 7 cars i've owned over the pass 40 years this is the first car that ever had so many mechnical problems. toyota claimed that the ecu computers don't last very long and need to be replaced about every 4 years. i don't believe these ecu are quality units and are defective. i'm hoping to get my money refunded.

My daughter was driving the toyota 2006 corolla when the windows stop working, then the lights begin stop working so she parked the car. the car would not start up again so she was able to get someone with jumper cables to start the car. she contacted performance toyota who instructed her to bring the car to toyota. they informed us that the car computer's ecu unit needed to be replaced and they replaced the ecu with no charge since the car was under warranty. however, they charged me $257.99 for a wire that had shortened behind the dash causing the fuses to blow. i believe that it was due to the computer failure but they disagreed. then on june 20, 2012 while the car was being repaired by performance collision body shop they contacted me to inform me that the car wouldn't start. i towed it to performance toyota and they inform me that the ecu computer failed and needed to be replaced. i will submit a new complaint for this incident.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the front driver side door panel caught on fire. the contact stated the wiring was burned and caused damage to the front driver side seat, and to the interior of the vehicle. the fire department did not report to the scene and the fire went out on its own. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic. the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the replacement of the front driver side door and seat. the wiring in the door was also replaced. the contact was not aware of the exact repair however, the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

The fuel pump assembly is mounted in the top of the fuel tank , hanging down submerged in the gas. one of the power wires from the pump assy. going to the electrical connector at the top mounting plate of the pump, was badly burned and melted causing the pump not to work when it warmed up along with this electrical connector. remember this is inside the fuel tank. this could have created a serious explosion ! toyota issued a recall for ecm (electronic control module) problems associated with stalling engine, sudden loss of power and engine cranks and will not start. i think some of the ecm problems could have been mis-diagnosed and were this burnt wire and connector from the fuel pump. on top of that this repair cost me approx. $1500.00 but maybe it saved my life. for safety reasons alone , this should be looked into and resolved. i hope this might help someone else before they are hurt.

My corolla 2006 stalled on the highway with out warning. i was almost hit by other cars while trying to get my corolla to the side of the road with no power. it would not restart. car was towed to dealership and was found to have a bad ecm. the ecm was replaced and we will see if this one will work. this could have turned out bad if there was more traffic on the highway!

I own a 2006 toyota corolla. the check engine light came on in the middle of driving but i did not notice any issues. the following day the car started shifting hard when i accelerated while driving. i took the car in for an oil change and they ran a diagnostic test and the code came back p2716: shift solenoid valve slt/range. i researched the code and found many forums with people having the same issues and the problem being the ecm. i took the car into the local dealership and gave them the information i found on the issues. they diagnosed the car and i said i needed the ecm replaced. the car has 82,000 miles and is out of warranty. the repair is running close to $900, the regional toyota representative has offered to split the cost. i feel this is unfair and a recall should have been issued. i also have a friend who has a 2007 corolla that just took her car in for the same problem. i am going to continue to speak with toyota in hopes they will cover the repair.

I was driving in afternoon commuter traffic in washington, dc, when, while stopped at a red light, my car hiccuped once and died. i was able to restart it, but as i drove through the green light, my car began to lose power, slow down, then stalled out in the middle of the road. i was able to restart the car, but it wouldn't go over 25 mph, then almost immediately slowed and stalled out again. after that, it took approximately 10 tries to get the engine to turn over and the car to start only long enough to move it 50 feet or so to a safer area. the problem, according to toyota, is a faulty computer (ecm) that the company was aware of but did not directly notify owners of. (based on what the toyota repair person said, this problem mirrors what is reported in nhtsa action number pe09054 and technical service bulletin tc015-07 - hard shift and stalling)

I have a 2006 toyota corolla s. it has approx. 115,000 miles. the engine stalled while my husband was driving on the freeway going 70miles/hr. he pulled over waited a few minutes and the car started up again. the car continues to stall when the rpms go over 1000. the problem diagnosed was the engine control unit. still waiting for car to be repaired.

While driving my 2006 corolla on vacation the motor stalled and the check enginne light came on. luckily we were in a parking lot and after a minute or two the engine restarted but just went a few yards and stalled again. after checking the fluids (all ok) i waited about 10 minutes and once again started the engine, this time i was able to drive about one block before it stalled again in traffic and i had to push it off the side of the road. i called a towtruck and had it taken to a nearby toyota dealer in simi valley, ca. after leaving it there overnight, they called and said it needed a new ecm (engine control module). that was replaced as well as some rloutine service work. they did not charge for the ecm as they were familiar with that problem. i consider this a safety issue as it results in almost complete loss of brakes and steering.

4/18/10 car felt like it was going to stall while we were driving 4/24/10 engine stalled right after it was turned on & then half a block away at intersection. both times car re-started 4/27/10 engine stalled when i came to stop at a stop sign at major intersection. was able to re-start right away 5/1/10 engine stalled 3 times within a one mile distance. the 3rd time was while driving down a major road & needed to coast to shoulder. had to wait before engine would re-start. at first we thought i had bought bad gas or the gas cap wasn't on tight. i bought good gas & then after yesterday realized something major was wrong. i was checking on line this morning & found other toyota corollas that had the same problem with stalling out...the emc?? drove the car to the dealer this afternoon, sunday, & will be there first thing tomorrow morning to talk with service dept.

Driving @ 60mph when the engine and all electrical components completely shut off. i had no power steering and due to no power assist brakes the car was more difficult to stop. it is extremely dangerous to be driving along and have that happen. i was fortunate to be on a country road with no other traffic. had i been on a busy interstate at 70mph it could have been very problematic. toyota has said that the ecm needs replaced and that the engine cut off on them as well when they tried it. it did restart the following day but i was too afraid to drive it again and had it towed to the dealer!

I'm writing because there is an injustice in the way that toyota is handling yet another issue. my husband was driving his 2006 toyota corolla on 4/21/10 when it stalled while he was driving. he lost all power, so he could not even turn on his hazards. luckily, thankfully, he was not hurt and did not hurt anyone else. here is a link to an article on toyota nation with 4 pages of blogs written by people with the same issue: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201631 had my 5 year old son been in the car with him and they were driving on the freeway, things could be much much different, and i'm lucky. i just wish someone would talk about this. this problem is associated with a bad ecm (electronic control module) and affects 2005-2007 corollas and matrixes. unfortunately, there was a technical service bulletin in reference to 2005-2007 toyota corolla & matrix ecms. tsb eg042-07 (september 20th 2007) but car owners were never informed of the issue.

I was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce tonight. i was stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. the light turned green, i pressed the gas pedal and the car stalled and it would barely move at all and the check engine light came on. i was thankfully able to get off to the shoulder of the road without being in an accident. after i got to the shoulder off the road the car sounded like it was about to quit running and just die out. i turned the car off and restarted it. the check engine light was still on and i was terrified about having to drivethe car home, about 2 miles from my destination at that time, but i tried it and when i pushed the gas pedal, after i restarted the car, it done okay and did not stall. however, the check engine light never went out even after restarting the care. this is a big safetly risk and needs to be fixed by toyota. someone could have hit me in the back end and it is definately a safety hazard and needs to be resolved! i was very upset when this happened not sure what i was going to do. please investigate this issue. i no longer feel safe driving any toyota product. again, i was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce. i am the owner of a 2007 scion tc and i am thinking about trading it off because i no longer feel safe driving anything made by toyota. before today, i wasn't really worried about driving my mom's car since none of the incidents where the vehicle speeds up and you can't stop it affected her model but after this incident today, i will not be driving her car at all. i feel like my life is at danger when in a toyota. please help protect my safety and families around america. toyota needs to make a recall regarding this because it is a safety risk!!!! despite what toyota says. they haven't been in the situation thiemselves. it is absolutely no fun. if they can't fix the problems, they need to just shut down. people's lives are at risk.

My engine light came on indicating p2716-trans shift solenoid error-refer to tsb for ecm replacement. my mechanic explained to me that this was covered under warranty for the 2005 model year but i was told by the toyota dealer that the mfg date of my car was 12/2005.

I recently encountered a power loss while i was driving my 2006 toyota corolla, the opposite of the acceleration problem that is in the news. after stopping to fill up the car with gasoline, i could only get the car to go about 5 to 10 miles an hour when i used the acceleration pedal. despite using the hazard lights, i was concerned that someone was going to ram into the car as i limped into a garage to have the car looked at. the vehicle had to be towed to the nearest toyota dealer who uncovered (after a computerized system check) an internal ecu failure...some sort of computer circuit failure. the only advanced warning about a computer failure that i can recall receiving occurred earlier in the morning when i noticed the dashboard lights weren't working right. the ecu was replaced by the dealer. i do not have the old part.

My 2006 toyota corolla completely shut off as i was driving on a dark country road. i was in the middle making a left hand turn. the only thing that was working was the battery. i was unable to start the car. i had to get my car towed to the dealer. i purchased my car in august of 2006 and the computer completely failed on january 09, 2008. the car only had 20,434 miles on it at the time of the computer failure. the dealer replaced the defective computer. *tr

One saturday afternoon, my 2006 corolla with only 32k mileage on it just stopped in the middle of the freeway (i-880 south bound) in oakland, ca just after the oak exit. to make things worse, the area where it stopped has no shoulder. the chp pushed the car to the nearby off ramp and i had it towed to the toyota dealership in hayward. the service attendant told me my car had a computer problem which happened in 2005 and 2006 models of corolla. they did some fixes on it. when i was picking it up, settled their exorbitant fees and wait on the side for the car, it took me over 20 minutes to wait. it turned out the car broke again with the same problem and told me to wait another 15 minutes so they can fix something in the computer of the car. my concern is, if they knew there were some issues with their 2005 or 2006 corollas, they should have notified the customers to prevent dangerous things to happen. and why would the car with only 32k miles on it suddenly stops in the middle of the freeway? it would be a different story if the mileage is over 100k. *tr

Ecm (engine control module) is defective. car loses power and sometimes dies while driving, also the transmission shifts very hard going into each gear. a search on the internet finds that this is a common issue with many toyota models for 2006-2007. dealer has offered a warranty fix for cars still under factory warranty only. this is a serious and potentially deadly issue and is due to a defective part , not normal wear and tear. this issue should have resulted in a recall a long time ago! its time that our government watchdogs start protecting the consumer, not the corporations. *tr

2006 and other years of toyota corolla. ecm defect causes had shifting of transmission and has resulted in sudden loss of all power when driving. cases of this problem are widely reported on the internet by owners of these vehicles but no action has been taken by the nhtsa to order a recall or to hold the company liable to repair these vehicles. where is the focus of the nhtsa??? *tr

Driving at normal speed in traffic the check engine light appeared and the engine lost power. in los angeles traffic this can be deadly. i was nearly rear ended twice due to the inability to even have the car roll to a safe stop. the problem has been diagnosed as a known ecm failure and many owner forums have said this is a widely known and common failure. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota corolla. on 01-29-2010, i was driving my toyota down the road. suddenly, without warning, the engine stalled. luckily, i was not on the freeway or in heavy traffic and was able to safely pull to the side of the road. i ended up having my car towed to toyota of el cajon where the problem was identified as a defective ecm (engine control module). they replaced the ecm for $841.00 which fixed the problem. an ecm failing on a new car after 3 1/2 years is very unusual (they are engineered to last the life of the car). i went on line and was stunned to find that ecm failures were a known problem and frequently failed on 2006 and some earlier toyota corollas. toyota even changed/re-engineered the ecms after 2006 models. i would like to know how many of these ecms have failed nation wide and why no recall has been done to fix this problem. i've tried to get ahold of toyota corporate but i can't get through to a person and they have not answered my e-mail back (going on two weeks since i sent it to them). *tr

While making a left turn, my gas pedal locked and the check engine light came on. i had to coast to the side of the road just pass a very busy intersection. my car was towed to the local toyota dealer where they determined the electronic control unit (ecu or computer) shut down and needed to be replaced. my car has 83,000 miles, 3,000 miles over the 8yr/80,000 mile federal emissions warranty. this is a dangerous and expensive error that toyota should take responsibility to correct. *tr

I was driving down the interstate with my 3yr old son when my cars check engine light popped on and the car turned off and immediately started slowing down. it was night time and after a large snow storm so i was unable to get off the shoulder fully. luckily a police officer came and said i was in a very dangerous position and that she was going to speed up the process by calling a tow agency herself. she then cornered her car with lights on to add some safety. i had the car towed to a repair shop where they stated nothing was physically wrong with the car but the computer had died. i called toyota to see if there was anything that they could do and they stated they were aware this was a standard problem but since the car was over 80,000 miles that it was no longer under warranty and would be full price to fix. i stated that i felt when i purchased the car they needed to inform me that after 80,000 miles my car had the potential to shut down at anytime. i can assure you i would not have purchased it. i had to order a new part which is still not guaranteed. i feel that this is a scam by toyota to ensure that they are still making money on cars even when you take the best of care. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota corolla. on november 11th, as i was driving on the highway, the car stalled. i was able to coast the car to the shoulder of the highway and had it towed to the nearest toyota dealer. the computer, the electronic control module, had to be replaced. at the time of the failure i had approximately 81,000 miles on my car and the warranty covered the computer up to 80, 000 miles. i paid to have the computer replaced and toyota should be reimbursing me $300 of the total $978 bill. *tr

On friday, october 23, 2009, my check engine light came on in my 2006 toyota corolla le. once the light came on, the car had a hard shift. on friday october 30, 2009, i took the car to the local toyota dealership and had the diagnostics run, which indicated a faulty p2716 pressure control solenoid d electrical. the service representative told me that i needed to have the computer replaced ($900) and that the car could shut off on me while in operation if i did not. after i had it replaced, i looked it up on the internet. turns out that toyota was aware of the problem based on a 9/2006 service bulletin, but chose to not issue a recall. i have a 110 mile round trip commute daily and after reading hundreds of posting from others that have encountered this problem, i count myself lucky. many others have had the car stop on them going 70 mph on the interstate. i was lucky, but it could have turned out deadly. there are incidents of accidents occurring due to faulty p2716's. it is not a matter of if it goes out, but when. i think toyota should be obligated to notify the owners of the 2006 corolla le's that the part is faulty and to have it replaced. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota corolla. this year and model of vehicle has widespread problems with an engine control module which causes the vehicle to cease acceleration during driving. my husband was driving home from work on interstate 77 when the problem occurred. luckily, he was able to get the car to the side of the road without a car accident. toyota was notified of the problem, yet refuses to recall this part saying that it is not a safety issue. i personally know of other drivers who have incurred the same problem in their vehicles. i also was told by the service department that the response is different in cars with a manual transmission, which is what we own. knowing the details of the case, the company still refused to offer any assistance, even though the repair calls for a totally different part, and that the old part is defective. owners who do not have knowledge of this problem could be surprised by a sudden stop in their vehicle, and could be involved in an accident as the problem does occur during driving. *tr

2006 toyota corolla with approx. 36,125 miles starts but soon stalls within a time span of 15 seconds to 5 minutes. efforts to restart the vehicle immediately fail posing a safety risk if the vehicle is in traffic (which ours was). after waiting approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle is able to restart but stalls again within the same time span of 15 seconds to 5 minutes. the battery is working as evidenced by interior and exterior lights. gas is at or above 3/4 tank full. car recently passed (april 2009) pennsylvania standards for emissions and inspection. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota corolla. while driving between 10-15 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle exhibited an erratic hard shift during acceleration. the check engine warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel and remained lit until the engine was turned off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection and the failure was labeled as the pressure control solenoid. the component was replaced, but the failure recurred. the dealer performed diagnostic testing and they recommended that the engine computerized system be replaced under warranty. the vehicle has not been repaired due to the massive national back order for the part. the failure mileage was 69,500 and current mileage was 70,029.

There were no deaths or injuries for this complaint. i'm guessing that these two incorrect entries will get this complaint reviewed by a nhtsa employee sooner rather than later. as noted by several other complaints, the 2006 toyota corolla's pcm appears to have a serious failure mode (i.e. control module turns off fuel relay causing engine stall). it also appears that the failure mode has a high occurrence. as of 4/6/2009 there was a two week national back order of pcm for this vehicle. i spoke with toyota national customer service, there were 4 vehicles at a small toyota dealership in grand blanc michigan waiting for this service part. if these 4 vehicles are taken as a data sampling, there may be as many as 4 * 1400 dealerships or 5600 vehicles currently awaiting this service part and have failed in the field. accounting for individual dealership business volume, my estimation is that there may be as many at 8000 field failures of this relatively serious failure mode just over the last 3-4 weeks. you nhtsa folks might want to give a call over to toyota na corporate headquarters before some young people have there lives destroyed by a engine stall in high speed commuter traffic. thanks. cm. again, there were no deaths of injuries for this complaint.*tr

My 2006 toyota corolla (le) randomly shut off in the middle of the road. after the vehicle shut off, it had trouble restarting. as it happened, we were driving on a side street and no accident resulted. i am concerned however, that if this happens to someone else on a highway, this could be a life threatening issue. at the dealership, i was told that there was a recall on the computer of the car. however after reporting the incident to toyota customer service, learned that there was only a service bulletin regarding the computer and starting issues. no incident had been reported where the vehicle randomly cut off in the middle of the road. my computer has been replaced, but i still worry about the safety of the vehicle. *tr

I purchased a 2006 toyota corolla ce on 06-26-06. on 02-05-07 vehicle would not start. after several attempts it still didn't start. i called the local toyota dealership and he told me to get a jump off because it was the battery due to the cold weather. i got a jump off and it still would start. i called the dealership back and he told me to call a tow truck. i did that and it was towed to the dealership. we needed all keys to see if it was the keys and it wasn't. he thought it was bad gas and it wasn't. then he said it was the computer. the computer was replaced and i still have trouble cranking it now. i would turn the key and it wouldn't do anything. after several attempts, it would crank. before this incidence, in july 2006, not even a month after getting the vehicle, my brakes started squealing and they still do now. the rotor was defective and replaced. each time i take it for servicing, i'm told there's nothing wrong with the brakes. i filed a complaint with toyota customer relations with no response. now i've filed a complaint with the national center for dispute settlement. *jb

I purchased a 2006 toyota corolla le, and brought it home jan. 2. next morning, jan. 3, vehicle would not start. after about 7 attempts it finally started. i took it back to dealership, they checked it and advised no problem found. i drove it to restaurant for lunch, went out later, vehicle would not start. called dealership and advised them of the same. needless to say, i was very upset. dealership advised me to call tow truck. i called tow truck and waited 45 minutes. i then attempted to try to start vehicle and it started. i drove vehicle to dealership and advised them i did not want a new vehicle that was not going to start. they advised they would check it again and to leave it. they did furnish me with a car to drive in the meantime. they called me wednesday, jan. 4 to advise me they had reprogrammed the keys and that the vehicle was ready for me to pick up. they went out to start it and it would not start. the called me back to advise me of same and they would check it further. they called me friday, jan. 5 and said they had put a new computer in the car and i could pick it up. i drove to the dealership, they went out to get the vehicle. the service personnel came back and said it would not start. i was so upset and wanted to speak with the service manager. i advised him i did not want this car, i just purchased it on january 2, and i requested they put me in another vehicle. that, all i want is a vehicle that will start and run. they advised they would not do that because i had already signed the contract. well, i did not know the vehicle had a problem such as this. i was so upset and asked to speak with the sales manager. he basically told me the same. i told him i do not want the vehicle, it is brand new and i should not have these types of problems. he advised i had only 2 options; leave the vehicle there and they would try to repair it or they would call the company representative regarding the lemon law. *jb

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - WIRING - FRONT UNDERHOOD
11/01/20064000109/25/2006
The car was being driven between 40-50mph on a secondary road. the engine began making a whining noise and the oil light flickered on and off. the car stalled out in a driveway. tried to restart the car and it would not start. opened the hood and smoke came out. tried to restart the car to move it. it burst into flames. the fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher. the next morning the car was towed to westbury toyota where they wrote it up as an electrical fire. a few days later the car was inspected by an inspector for the company and i was told that a rod went through the engine, cutting the fuel line causing the fire. they said it was caused by downshifting (on an automatic) and was driver error, invalidating the warrenty. at first they gave me an estimate of $13,000 to fix it. then they offered to take the insurance check for $4,900 and split the difference with me. the last offer was to give them the insurance check $1,000 and they would give me a comperable car. this i thought was insurance fraud. i will be with out a car. *nm
