Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 corolla and corolla matrix vehicles. the engine control module (ecm) for the subject models equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive may have been improperly manufactured. there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on varistors on the circuit board.
Consequence SummaryThere are a variety of warnings and consequences associated with the defect. the engine warning lamp could be illuminated, harsh shifting could result, the engine may not start, or the engine could shut off while the vehicle is being driven. an engine shutoff while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the production number of the ecm and replace the ecm if necessary. this service will be performed free of charge. toyota will mail an interim owner notification the middle of september 2010 to advise owners of this defect and recall. this interim notification will inform owners that they will receive a future notification when parts become available to have the free remedy performed on their vehicle. the safety recall began on november 29, 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

On august 26, 2010, toyota submitted a defect information report to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) regarding problems with engine control modules that could result in engine stall while driving in certain model year (my) 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla, corolla matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive and manufactured between april 19, 2004 and january 2, 2008.toyota's report indicated that cracks may develop at certain solder point or on varistors on the ecms.according to toyota, such cracks generally resulted in engine warning lamp illumination, harsh shifting or engine no-start.in some cases, if the cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.toyota will notify owners of subject vehicles that they should return their vehicles to a toyota or pontiac dealer.dealers will be instructed to inspect the production number of the ecm for each vehicle and replace the ecm if necessary.on november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request, submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible conditions with ecms used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles:1) cracks forming between the ic and the board caused by an improperly cured conformal coating applied to the circuit boards after the soldering process is completed; and 2) cracks occurring in a variable resistor (varistor) due to overheating.during the manufacturing process a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor.between march and august 2010, toyota began collecting ecms from the field to further investigate failure modes that may result in engine stall.toyota also conducted durability testing on ecms collected from in-use vehicles to assess whether the problems may be a continuing trend. in addition, they conducted durability testing in order to assess whether this problem was a continuing trend.toyota found that 4 of 32 collected ecms malfunctioned after thermal shock testing.toyota also confirmed that cracking could develop at solder points on the ecm circuit board that could lead to engine stall while driving and that this trend was likely to continue.the manufacturer failure data in this resume is limited to my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.based on toyota's recall, this engineering analysis has been closed.

On november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stalling, while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles .in its response to odi's information request submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible causes of production defects of the engine control units (ecu) used in the my 2005 through 2007 corolla and matrix vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine.failure mode a1 - bga ball failure caused by improperly cured conformal coating applied to ecu circuit boards. this can cause cracks to form in the soldered joints of some components. failure mode a2 - varistor over heating; a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor during its production process.in case of an insufficient coating, a crack can occur in the surface of the glass coating. when ions are charged in the plating electrolytes after the glass coating process, the plating electrolytes can penetrate into the varistor through the glass crack then an electrical short occurs. with respect to these failures, if the condition arises, it can potentially lead to one or more of the following: mil on, engine stall or engine no start, harsh shifting.of the approximately 155,000 warranty and extended warranty claims toyota has analyzedthe projected 5 year failure rate of the ecu associated with an engine stall is 0.8%. this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea10-006) to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with the identified defects.

While driving the car on monday january 11, 2011 it began to violently shake and a loud noise was coming from under the hood. drove the car to a auto repair shop who stated the engine had sludge and there was no oil in the engine. this auto repair shop performed a oil change in sept 2010 and noted some sludge in the engine. the repair shop recommended replacing the engine as it was not repairable. i spent $5397 to have a jasper remanufactored engine installed in the toyota. i decided to perform an internet search to see if there were other complaints regarding the toyota engine in light of the recent toyota recalls. i discovered an article that referenced odi's investigation of similar problems with the 2006 toyota corolla engine 1zz-fe. the auto repair shop stated that oil changes should be done every 2,000 miles and not the 5,000 miles indicated in the toyota manual. this is not the first problem i've had with the toyota corolla. in 2009 the car's dashboard wire shorted out behind the wheel causing the fuses to blow. i took it to the toyota dealer who repaired the problem. i've always purchased honda in the past and have a 2006 honda accord. i will never purchase a toyota ever again.

This is to report an accident i was involved in on thursday september 30, 2010 in the morning around 4:30am, in baltimore, maryland, on interstate i-95 northbound, close to exit 80, with my 2006 toyota corolla. my car was recalled back in late august 2010 and i took it to the dealer as soon as i received the notification. after inspecting the engine, the dealer confirmed that a computer in the engine was defective. however, they could not replace the missing part at the time but indicated that i will receive notice in the mail for when i could bring the car back. that thursday morning it was raining and i was driving around 50 miles/hour when i noticed that the speed needle went completely to the end of the speedometer and came back. it did this twice before suddenly accelerating and sending the car off the road. my car hit a tree from the back passenger side before stopping. the airbag deployed and i incurred several bodily injuries around the neck, chest, right shoulder, right hip and back. i was taken to the er right after the accident and back again yesterday monday october 4, 2010 because i could not move. my car is still in a towing lot but my insurance will move it to a collision center in the coming days. i believe it might be important to investigate this crash but i am not sure who to connect with directly and hope you can advise. my direct line is 410-774-5301. thank you in advance for your assistance. sophia

In august 2010, i learned about corolla recall. therefore i called elk grove toyota(916-405-8000) to make an appointment but was informed to wait until i receive a notice from toyota motors usa. because i did not receive a letter from toyota, i have emailed them on october 19, 2010 requesting the recall letter. toyota motors replied stating my corolla engine control module was replaced on march 13, 2008. i do remember towing my car to elk grove toyota on march 13, 2008 because the engine will not start. i was told the engine needed new parts and because of warranty there will be no cost to me. my concern is: 1. according to the recall announcement made by the media stated that this defect could have been a serious matter because the vehicle could stop while driving. i was lucky because i was in a parking lot. 2. why did toyota take so long to announce this engine problem.?if my engine problem was similar to this recall, why did they take 2 years and 5 months to announce the recall? i know toyota has been penalized for their slow decision to recall the acceleration problem. but it seems that they continue to have problem making recall decision to ensure public safety. toyota has become too big too fast as stated in the media. i hope they will seriously consider consumer safety rather than their profit by becoming the largest auto manufacture in the world.

I heard on the radio that you have had over 1,000 complaints about the 2005-06 toyota corollas with regard to engine control modules (ecms) and possible stalls. my 2006 corolla started to stutter when i accelerated from 45 to 55 mph. i could tell that one of the spark plugs was misfiring and i was afraid the engine was going to stall in heavy traffic. the engine did not stall, but the check engine light came on. i searched the internet and found that toyota had a bad batch of ecms in 2005-2006 , but did not to recall them. instead, they waited to see which units actually failed before replacing the defective ecms. when i took the car to the dealership, i told the service writer that it appeared to be a defective ecm. he told me i was mistaken about the ecm and that it had nothing to do with the spark plug misfiring. after they checked the car, i was told that a plug had fouled out. i was charged over $500 to replace all of the plugs and the ignition coil, not just the one fouled plug . i was also charged $120 to clean what i was told would be the fouled fuel injector, but it was listed as

Squeak from engine in 3/4/08 with 15,800 miles. i can only hear out of one ear so this squeak was only evident when i was next to a building (drive thru at bank). not screaming like fan belts tend to do. toyota said belt glazzed over causing belt to slip at pulleys, replaced belt, noise no longer present at this time. now at 33,359 the ecm had to be fixed and they said the drive belt tensioner and drive belt need to be replaced costing over $400. the same belt that was replace a little over 15,000 miles before. i did not have them do the work but it will have to be fixed because if the belt breaks then the car is dead, much like the ecm problem (which was a large pain in the...). there will be an incident if i don't get it fixed. and again i cannot hear a squeak unless a really listen or again i pull up to a building.

Driving @ 60mph when the engine and all electrical components completely shut off. i had no power steering and due to no power assist brakes the car was more difficult to stop. it is extremely dangerous to be driving along and have that happen. i was fortunate to be on a country road with no other traffic. had i been on a busy interstate at 70mph it could have been very problematic. toyota has said that the ecm needs replaced and that the engine cut off on them as well when they tried it. it did restart the following day but i was too afraid to drive it again and had it towed to the dealer!

I was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce tonight. i was stopped at a red light waiting to turn left. the light turned green, i pressed the gas pedal and the car stalled and it would barely move at all and the check engine light came on. i was thankfully able to get off to the shoulder of the road without being in an accident. after i got to the shoulder off the road the car sounded like it was about to quit running and just die out. i turned the car off and restarted it. the check engine light was still on and i was terrified about having to drivethe car home, about 2 miles from my destination at that time, but i tried it and when i pushed the gas pedal, after i restarted the car, it done okay and did not stall. however, the check engine light never went out even after restarting the care. this is a big safetly risk and needs to be fixed by toyota. someone could have hit me in the back end and it is definately a safety hazard and needs to be resolved! i was very upset when this happened not sure what i was going to do. please investigate this issue. i no longer feel safe driving any toyota product. again, i was driving my mom's 2006 toyota corolla ce. i am the owner of a 2007 scion tc and i am thinking about trading it off because i no longer feel safe driving anything made by toyota. before today, i wasn't really worried about driving my mom's car since none of the incidents where the vehicle speeds up and you can't stop it affected her model but after this incident today, i will not be driving her car at all. i feel like my life is at danger when in a toyota. please help protect my safety and families around america. toyota needs to make a recall regarding this because it is a safety risk!!!! despite what toyota says. they haven't been in the situation thiemselves. it is absolutely no fun. if they can't fix the problems, they need to just shut down. people's lives are at risk.

There was no warning. drive car 400 miles per week. one day i drove car to commuter parking lot with no problem, that evening it started fine then stalled when i put it in gear. took a while to start the 2nd time and stalled again. this happened 4 times then i had it towed to dealer. dealer said the engine computer needed to be replaced with no real explanation. i even asked to speak to the mechanic who could not provide an explanation other than it happens. computer was replaced and the car runs fine. they said it was only warrantied for 1 year. as i was away from home i had to rent a car for 2 days while they made the repairs.

I own a 2006 toyota corolla, once driving on the road the vehicle suddenly stopped and when i took it to the dealer, they told me its a faulty engine computer and they have seen this in many cars and replaced my engine computer. i marginally escaped from being hit by cars coming behind me. i don't want this issue to cause any accidents in the future for people who are still driving old version of engine computer and if possible toyota should replace the old version of engine computer with new version. *tr

My 2006 corolla abruptly turned off without warning while i was doing 65-70mph in freeway traffic. luckily i pulled over safely. the engine would barely start, but it ran rough/ very weakly and die. the car was not drivable, so it was towed to the dealer and fixed same day, under warranty. i was given a receipt that stated tsb (technical service bulletin) ego42-07. the receipt indicated that my car's ecm was replaced with a different ecm, i assume a more reliable one. i know from a co-worker that this is a common defect. this should really be a recall because what if i was passing someone on the highway or turning left! it could have been really, really bad. i wrote toyota a complaint, and got a generic response, but i think this should be a recall. i would have reported this earlier, but i just learned about nhtsa. thank you! *tr

While driving on a local street my check engine light came on, within seconds there was no fuel (power) to drive. i pressed the gas pedal to the floor but the car would not go more than 5rpm, going less than 5 mph, then car just shut off. this happened in less than 20 seconds. i tried to re-start the car but with no luck. i was able to put the car in neutral and with help push the to local repair shop, they diagnosed it as faultcode p0607 aka bad ecm. the mechanic called the local toyota dealer and they towed the car to there shop since it was covered under warranty of 8 yrs and/or up to 80,000 miles. however the part was not in stock so i had to wait 2 days. i was out of a car for a total of 3 days and my local repair shopped charged $109.00 for diagnosed the car. lucky for me toyota dealer was no charge because it was still under warranty 8 yrs, or 80,000. my car had 71,260, however i am still not happy because i could have been badly injured if i was on a highway and this had happen, or i could have hurt someone else. i am not pleased that i was without a car for 3 days and incurred travel expenses and had to pay my local repair shop $109.00 which i feel toyota should cover. there should be a recall for this issue as it can be fatal. *tr

The engine on my 2006 toyota corolla has had an engine serge problem. when the car had about 26,000 miles on it, i had a couple of incidents where i would be stopped at traffic light with my foot on brake. the engine would serge up to 4rpms. it was all i could do to keep from hitting the car in front of me. i was so shook up, i called dealer and insisted they take car and check it out. they kept the car overnight, and by the end of the next day had diagnosed the problem. they told me it was my workboot. the gas pedal was so close to the break, that the edge of my boot was hitting the gas. i had a hard time accepting that, because i made a point to keep my foot on the break when the incident was happening. i haven't had another serge problem, but i did have a high idol problem. toyota replaced the computer chip free of charge. i thought that was great because i had 36,895 miles on car and my warranty had expired. i now have 53,000 miles on car and the high idol is getting bad again. the recent recall on gas pedal has me concerned. i believe the problem goes beyond the gas pedal. i am sending this email, to give you more data. hopefully, others will do the same. *tr

Hello, i am writing to you in relation to a recent problem i had with my 2006 toyota corolla. the short story is that the car's engine died while driving and wouldn't restart. i had to tow the car to a toyota dealership where it was inspected and found that the electronic control module (ecm) had failed (error code p0607) and needed replacement. since the car is still relatively new, i was astonished to find that the brain of the car is out of order and has to be replaced. what's worse is that this problem could cause highly dangerous situations where the car's engine stalls in the middle of a highway while driving at 65 mph. many people complain about the same problem on the internet and describe such cases where either the car's engine dies in the middle of the road, or the car leaves people in the middle of nowhere and won't start at all (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201631). toyota has issued a technical service bulletin about this problem: tsb eg042-07 (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/attachments/corolla-matrix/27763d1201041193-2006-obdii-code-p0607-06-corrolla-tsb.pdf). information on the internet suggests that faulty solenoids on the ecm board are causing the computer to go crazy. given the severity of the problem, i don't believe that toyota should be leaving all corolla and matrix drivers get stuck on the road before replacing the faulty parts. i believe that for any such road hazardous situations where the manufacturer acknowledges that faulty parts were installed should recall all affected models and replace them accordingly. since this is the first time such thing has happened to me, i am not sure what the procedures are but just wanted to let you know about my experience so that you decide what's appropriate. my concern is that car manufacturers should be proactive in such matters and not be passive and wait for something known to happen. thank you for your attention! *tr ognian voynikov mileage: 23,000

Toyota has issued a technical service bulletin indicating that the a/c condenser is not properly protected the number for this report is ac002-06. additionally, the toyota has redesigned the corolla to correct this in 2007 by properly protecting the a/c condenser leaving the 2005-2006 customers in the dust. this problem appears to occur just outside of warranty. i discovered my condenser was not working (causing no air conditioning) 16 days after my warranty expired. i now live in the southwest and the type of heat experienced and lack of ac could be considered a health hazard. toyota refuses to replace the condenser and wants to charge customers the full $600 for replacement. *tr

My car stopped working while driving , i pulled over while coasting. i turned the key after stopping & it started back up and i started driving again and it stalled in the middle again. this happened a few times, and then i had it towed due to the hazard of being hit by someone. the problem was the computer had tied and was told that the computer failure is a common issue on these vehicles. luckily i was under warranty on this and was replaced for free. why is there no recall. also after this was fixed 2 days later intake manifold gasket went out. again it is a common problem with this vehicle according to a few dealers i talked as the part that is needed to replace is backordered as toyota is redesigning it. again no recall from toyota yet. i am liable to pay for the repairs even though it is an engine component. *tr

I was driving to work around 1:30 am on 5/02/2008 when the vehicle just quit running. the check engine light came on and then the engine shut down. i tried to restart the vehicle with no luck. i called my wife to come and get me so i could call a towing service to get the car home. i than connected the car to my personal engine scanner and pulled a trouble code p0607 control module performance. i looked online to see if anyone else had this problem and found that toyota has a technical service bulletin for no start condition. bulletin # eg049r. i contacted toyota the next day and had the car towed to the dealership so they could trouble shoot it. they told me what i already new. that the engine control module was faulty. they also said because my vehicle had 111,146 miles on it that it was out of warranty. i contacted toyota customer service to try and get them to repair it under goodwill since they have a bulletin out regarding faulty control modules. i was contacted on 5/8/2008 and told that toyota would not offer me any type of goodwill coverage because i didn't have any prior repair work done at the toyota dealer and i was beyond the normal warranty. i explained to them that i do all my own maint. on my vehicles since i am a mechanic by trade. they said they were aware of the bulletin but the still were not willing to offer any type of good faith warranty. my case number with toyota is 2008 0502 0992. after talking to a few local dealers i deal with i have found that they are replacing quite a few of these faulty processors under warranty. some dealers stock as many as 3 control units on the shelf at one time. my feeling is that they are warranting most of them people are not aware of the big picture. the processor is a $700.00 item. i wonder how many are really going bad. should this be a national recall? *tr

While driving my 2006 toyota corolla, the vehicle gasoline engine stalled without warning. i was able to pull over out of traffic with no incident. i have great concern for safety of others since i normally drive on the major interstates. i tried to restart but no results. vehicle had to be tolled to dealership. dealership explained that it was the ecm or the engine computer that failed. this incident is similar to nhtsa investigation, #pe05029 dated may 31, 2005, where gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles gasoline engines would stall. facts found that analysis of the warranty data indicated that over 97% of vehicles experiencing a gas engine stall resulted from an issue with the program logic in the electronic control module (ecm) system. major concern is safety on major interstates at high speeds and the vehicle stalling out with no warning. the other concern is that it cost me $1,229.69 to replace the ecm, plus $80.25 to have it tolled to the dealership. *tr

My corolla is a 2006 with only 14,000 miles.the engine computer went out at 13,000 miles about 5 weeks ago. my car stayed in the shop at thomasville georgia toyota for two weeks. i got it back and drove it two weeks and it happened again. i cut it off and recranked it and took it to the dealer. they can't get it to do it again. they kept it another week and did nothing to fix it. i cannot even go on vacation or let my daughter take it to college for fear that it will break down again and leave her stranded on a desolate road in danger for her life. the dealer admitted they have a problem with this and i know it happened in 2001 corrollas also. the car is 14 months old with 14,600 miles on it.i want the car replaced or bought back.i owe around 13,000 on the car and they only offered me 11,000 on a trade in. yet they are selling one just like mine with more miles for 15,788.they are trying to rob me blind.this is very crooked dishonorable business practices. the car is useless to me to leave town and very dangerous because the car gets very hard to steer and will barely run 2 mph. please help me. i bought the car new for my daughter. *tr

I am the owner of a 2006 corolla 4-dr sedan. vin - omitted current mileage 48820 about a week ago, i noticed that the air conditioner was not working. i took it to my local dealership (michael's toyota in bellevue) for service where they told me that the a/c condenser has a hole in it and will need to be replaced - to the tune of $685. i was shocked by this so started doing a little research online only to learn that thousands of other 2006 corolla owners are experiencing the same problem. technical service bulletin ac002-06 was released by toyota admitting to the faulty design of the condenser which left it unprotected and vulnerable to road debris. i'm shocked and appalled by this. with all of the negative press that toyota has received in recent years, i would expect you to be going above and beyond to ensure that all known problems are corrected. i turned down the suggested replacement and will continue to seek arbitration. i have filed a complaint with toyota. i was surprised to find that several official complaints have already been filed, yet no recall. i come from a large family of toyota owners, we stand by our cars & trucks as they have always been extremely reliable. i will continue to endorse them. i just hope that they'll make this situation right.

Driving behind dump truck rocks fell out of truck and punctured the unprotected ac condenser. then i lost ac during one of the hottest days of the year. lucky my newborn was not with me. what really tics me off is toyota knows about the problem and released it in there technical service bulletin ac002-06. which i'm just now finding out about on the internet. *tr

We live in florida and we lease a 2006 toyota corolla. the a/c went out. the service department told us a rock hit the condenser and put a hole in it. there is a tsb out on 2005-2006 corollas because of this problem. report number ac002-06 the service manager told us it is not under warranty. now toyota is telling us we have to pay $645 to fix it. we feel toyota needs to fix it. this is a persistent problem and design flaw. we need to have a recall. *tr

Received a safety recall from toyota for my 2006 toyota corolla s for engine control module (ecm). i scheduled an appointment to have the part replaced. i took off work and dropped my car off at the dealer, sloan toyota in devon, pa. i received a call shortly after saying the part was not there and would be ordered, then they tried told me about a belt they could repair for me in the amount of $150.00. i declined that service and picked my car up. i received an email a week later saying my car was scheduled for service during the time i would be at work. i called and was told an automated email goes out a week after service has not been completed and they were still waitng on the part to come in for this safety recall. they said i would receive a call and here it is 4 months later and have not heard if the part ever came in or not. my understanding from reading the safety recall was that the part was at the dealer. i received an urgent safety recall follow up letter today, july 23, 2011 saying my car has not been taken in for service as of this time and needs to. i am not taking another day off from work just to take my car and then told the part is still not in. if toyota issues a safety recall then the parts should already be at the dealer's before people call in to schedule service, or at least tell the people they have to order the part and they will call when it has arrived.

I filed a complaint, odi number 10313597 to bring attention to a potentially hazardous condition with my 2006 toyota corolla. as stated in the original complaint, my vehicles ecu (engine computer) failed while in traffic 2 times on this vehicle. i was pleased to find out that a recall for this issue was initiated for my model year corolla. called toyota for more information about the recall and they said that my vin number vehicle was not affected by the recall. i tried to explain to the operator that my vehicle's ecu had failed twice and had been replaced by a dealership. she could not give me a reason why my vehicle was not part of the recall. called dealer to find out if the last ecu was an updated one that would not fail and the parts guy thought it was.i am filing this complaint to see if the recall can be expanded to include my vehicle so if the current computer does fail, that i can get it replaced under the recall. when these computers fail the vehicle's engine dies and is hard to restart. this can happen at anytime, driving in traffic, pulling out into traffic and this can been very dangerous.

We bought a 2006 certified corolla le on june 19, 2010 from a dealership in northern virginia. on august 18, 2010 my daughter was driving the car and while at at stop light earlier that day her car hesitated and didn't want to move. that evening around 8:30 pm as she was driving her car, the road curved slightly to the right but she was not able to turn the wheel or depress the brakes. she crossed the on coming lane and the car was totaled. she was able to walk away from this with only hundreds of small cuts from glass. the initial thought was that she had hydroplaned but after further talking to my daughter she said that she tried to turn the steering wheel to follow the road but she couldn't because it was too hard and the brakes would not depress either. i had my mechanic go to the yard where the car was stored and read the computer and this is what he found: check engine light find p0430 evap system pressure sensor high input and in the history he found 2 codes: the same p0430 and b2799 engine immobilizer system fault. so as it seems now the car did shut off and she was not able to control the steering or brakes due to not having power. i have read that this is not the first report of this happening. something should be done before someone gets hurt really bad or there is a fatal accident. i would like to know if being a certified car, should this have been detected before the car was sold? also, is the computer read before the car is sold to see if there has been or is a problem? if it is not read, then maybe it should be a new policy for the dealerships.

My 2006 toyota corolla began stalling on the highway last night and ultimately left me stranded on the side of the road. after sitting for several minutes and trying to restart, the temperature gauge would sometimes respond and other times would not move when the key was turned to start the engine. when the gauge doesn't move the car will not start. when the gauge does move the car sometimes starts but will only go a few feet before stalling again. the check engine light is on permanently. there is no sign of over heating or of an oil level problem. the car is currently at a garage awaiting analysis. *tr

I own a 2006 toyota corolla le. earlier this month, i lost all but an extremely minimal amount of power while driving. i nursed the car to my home and contacted my local toyota dealership by telephone and described the problem. over the phone, the service person with whom i spoke said that he believed the problem was with one of the car's computers. he indicated that the problem i described was not unique, but that i should bring it in for formal diagnostic tests. when i had the car towed into the dealership, the service personnel verified that one of the car's computers had to be replaced. i spoke with two of the service personnel at the time and both gave me the impression that the problem was not unusual for that year's corolla le. i bring this to your attention because of the current questions regarding toyota's problems and the possibility that some of the major problems could have an electronic origin. *tr

I stepped on gas pedal and car stopped. this happened three times in a couple of minutes. the car was towed to toyota. they fixed it immediately and stated in was a computerfailure. i was lucky to be in a parking lot. if on a highway i would be dead as the car died each time i restarted it and stepped on the gas. toyota dealer stated it was a computer failure. my friend has the same car and same year. same thing happened to her. diagnosis again computer failure. *tr

Driving home when check engine light came on and engine shut off while in a busy curve of a local street. lost power steering assist. created a safety hazard being that i was causing a traffic hazard in a curve. only able to start engine by holding gas to the floor, engine sounded like a lawn mower and ran barely over idle. made it home at about 10 mph. next day engine started but check engine light was still lit. drove to dealer, engine was surging and car shifted very hard. dealer found that the ecu or computer had failed and replaced it under the emissions warranty. this is the second time that this computer has failed on my vehicle. first time was at 25,939 miles on 08/15/07 and they replaced the same engine computer this time my wife was driving the car in traffic and it did the same thing. current incident happened on 12/28/09 with 48,874 miles on vehicle. i can see that this could have been a more serious safety issue if we had been pulling out into traffic when the computer failed. *tr

Car wants to stall from idle at random times, example... you could be at a light turning left and when its clear to turn, you press on the gas to go and it wants to stall only for a small moment then engages and it's fine. i'm afraid one of these times it will completely stall and cause an accident. this car has done this from the beginning, i am the only owner as we bought the car brand new. i listed the car incident date at aug 1,2006 as an estimate when i bought the car but has happened multiple times on and off. i waited for a recall for this and it has never happened but is very much needed. *tr

After starting a 2006 toyota corolla with approximately 26,000 mileage and leaving parking garage, car lost power without warning. after turning key off, was able to restart on third try. with the restart, the check engine light came on. drove home without incident and made appointment with toyota dealer. was able to restart car to take to dealer and in trying to complete the 10 miles or so on low speed roads, the car repeatedly lost power until the 8th or 9th time when it would not restart. car was towed the last 2-3 miles. dealer said a newer firmware version was required. print-out said the ecm was replaced. this was done without charge and dealer was cooperative. the situation was dangerous and it was fortunate that the power loss was not on a high speed road. *tr

Updated: what we sent to toyota to nhtsa: please investigate part linked to trouble code: p2716 eg042-07 part? 2006 corolla with 40k decided to turn itself off while i was on the highway with our daughter in the car. we tried to make our way to the shoulder on i81s to return home and were almost prompted into an accident as a tractor trailer nearly rear-ended us. when my husband arrived he had a scan tool with him and the code p2716 came up. we then we had it towed to gault toyota in endwell, ny, and the service center mentioned that for our car this part would not qualify for under warranty coverage. (we bought the car used from a private owner but must acknowledge very poor service concern and helpfulness at this dealership. we were charged a fee to diagnose a part which had not been broken-the battery-and after that debacle gault acknowledged it was the eg042-07 part-the ecu pressure control solenoid and the our diagnosis of the trouble code p2716 was correct- fee paid to gault $58) gault toyota mentioned that the part is backordered and will take possibly until 7/07/09 to receive. please help us to get this part and possibly our $58 service fee which was charged. the experience was somewhat traumatic by experiencing an unexpected engine failure in traffic and trying to think in a crisis environment to try to weave from the left lane to the right of the driving lane in a decent amount of traffic. i was personally shaken up reliving the details and possible consequences for the next few days. we now must pay almost $900 for this dangerous ordeal. (for the ecu part) we have sent a complaint and request for recall for this item to the nhtsa (odi complaint #: 10273306) and have sent a letter to our senator. (senator libous r-binghamton) thanks and please send us the part to the following: part eg042-07 refund of $58 service charge (incorrect diagnosis fee) michelle zduniak *tr

02/04/2010603001
My 2006 toyota corolla experienced a failure with the ecm that caused the check engine light to come on and report a p2716 error code. the problem caused the transmission to lock up spontaneously and shift very hard. my independent mechanic who read the code had an advanced odc scanner that indicated the car was idling when the problem suddenly happened. the toyota dealership personnel informed me that several cars had been coming in with this report, but the company was only addressing the issue for customers who were still under warranty. several customers who discussed this problem on the internet reported that their car would suddenly stall while on the road, and it seems that toyota should be issuing yet another recall, but isn't. please investigate this matter and hold the toyota corporation responsible for its defect. *tr
