Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 corolla and corolla matrix vehicles. the engine control module (ecm) for the subject models equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive may have been improperly manufactured. there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on varistors on the circuit board.
Consequence SummaryThere are a variety of warnings and consequences associated with the defect. the engine warning lamp could be illuminated, harsh shifting could result, the engine may not start, or the engine could shut off while the vehicle is being driven. an engine shutoff while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the production number of the ecm and replace the ecm if necessary. this service will be performed free of charge. toyota will mail an interim owner notification the middle of september 2010 to advise owners of this defect and recall. this interim notification will inform owners that they will receive a future notification when parts become available to have the free remedy performed on their vehicle. the safety recall began on november 29, 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

On august 26, 2010, toyota submitted a defect information report to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) regarding problems with engine control modules that could result in engine stall while driving in certain model year (my) 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla, corolla matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive and manufactured between april 19, 2004 and january 2, 2008.toyota's report indicated that cracks may develop at certain solder point or on varistors on the ecms.according to toyota, such cracks generally resulted in engine warning lamp illumination, harsh shifting or engine no-start.in some cases, if the cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.toyota will notify owners of subject vehicles that they should return their vehicles to a toyota or pontiac dealer.dealers will be instructed to inspect the production number of the ecm for each vehicle and replace the ecm if necessary.on november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request, submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible conditions with ecms used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles:1) cracks forming between the ic and the board caused by an improperly cured conformal coating applied to the circuit boards after the soldering process is completed; and 2) cracks occurring in a variable resistor (varistor) due to overheating.during the manufacturing process a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor.between march and august 2010, toyota began collecting ecms from the field to further investigate failure modes that may result in engine stall.toyota also conducted durability testing on ecms collected from in-use vehicles to assess whether the problems may be a continuing trend. in addition, they conducted durability testing in order to assess whether this problem was a continuing trend.toyota found that 4 of 32 collected ecms malfunctioned after thermal shock testing.toyota also confirmed that cracking could develop at solder points on the ecm circuit board that could lead to engine stall while driving and that this trend was likely to continue.the manufacturer failure data in this resume is limited to my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.based on toyota's recall, this engineering analysis has been closed.

On november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stalling, while driving model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible causes of production defects of the engine control units (ecu) used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corollas and matrixs.failure mode a1 - bga ball failure caused by improperly cured conformal coating applied to circuit boards. this can cause cracks to form in the soldered joints of some components. failure mode a2 - varistor over heat, a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor during its production process.in the case of an insufficient coating, a crack can occur in the surface of the glass coating. when ions are charged in the plating electrolytes after the glass coating process, the plating electrolytes can penetrate into the varistor through the glass crack then an electrical short occurs. with respect to these failures, if the condition arises, it can potentially lead to one or more of the following: mil on, engine stall, engine no start, or harsh shifting.an engineering analysis has been openedto further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with the failure of the ecu that can result in engine stalling.

On 9/12/2012 the engine light came on and i drove the car to the dealership, the service rep said that they reset the sensor and everything should be ok. on jan 15,13 i took the car back to the toyota dealership for the 60,000 miles maintenance. only thing that was said to be found was the fan belt was needing to be replaced. on jan 24 while driving to the usaf base, the car started making noise and jerking. when i stopped at the gate to show my i.d. the guard told me that it sounded like my engine was dying, and go to the mechanic asap. i turned around and went straight to the toyota dealership. the engine light came back on and it took me 45 min to get to toyota bc the car would not accelerate past 20 mph (that should have been a 10 min drive). the service rep told me that the air flow meter sensor was dirty and frozen and they cleaned and reset it. on friday feb 1st the car was towed back to toyota because it would not drive out the drive way. toyota rep ran a diagnostic and said the computer engine was faulty and a new ecm would need to be put in. this car only has 66,000 miles! the rep told me that there were recalls on the 2005-2008 model toyota corollas and that i need to get a recall letter from toyota usa so they can fix the car (i never got the letter that was supposedly sent out sept 2010). i called toyota corporate on 4 separate occasions on feb 4 and was told that i could not get a letter faxed or emailed here to germany to get my car repaired. a rude representative name [xxx] said that it would take an unknown amount of time to get a recall letter sent through the mail. i don't have an unknown amount of time. i am due to leave germany in a week on military orders! in the days of technology, we can put a man on the moon but toyota usa can't send an electronic recall letter to toyota germany to have one of their faulty vehicles repaired? shame on toyota! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was driving uphill on a one-way street in downtown when i saw and heard the sparks about 1 minute apart from each other on the front left side between the crack of the hood, the car lost power and turned off. i started it again, and it only moved about two feet and turned off. the car started to roll back, and the steering wheel locked making it impossible to steer. an unknown driver who was in front of us was merging to park to the right told us to get off because the car was on fire, next the smoke was visible. it began to smell like burned plastic, and then we saw the thick grey smoke coming through the crack of the hood. i pulled the hand emergency brake to stop the car from rolling back down any further. i opened the hood we all got out of the car. i went back inside the car to unhooked the harness off my dog. i was so scared that i couldn't release my dog, and my son's girlfriend helped me, and we got my dog out. my son, his girlfriend and i got the super-size large drink we just bought at mcdonald's and dumped on the fire with the help of the unknown man who got a bucket of some liquid possibly water from the hotel next to us, and the fire was out. i was so terrifying of how rapid my car caught on fire and how fast everything happening. my car was well maintained by toyota regularly, and the mechanic told us that there is no known reason why the fire started. toyota has replaced the defected computer twice, the transmission once, i had two electrical problems in the past, and i do not feel safe in a car with so many manufacturers defective parts. unexplainable fire, is the response i got from the insurance and repair shop which does not make me feel safe to drive a car that could caught fire at any time.

We were notified last summer/fall that there was a safety recall on some 2005-2008 toyota corolla and matrix models. the letter states that we would be notified when parts became available and that due to the possible failure of the ecm -engine control module -(cracks on welds) the engine may stop working while the car is being driven. therefore we have not been able to drive it except at slow speeds considering safety and hoping our car was not one that fell under the recall. considering we never got another letter (expected nov 2010) we believed we must be exempt from the recall, but yesterday we received the notice that the parts are available so we went in to our local toyota dealer seeger toyota in st robert mo where it was confirmed our car falls under this serious safety recall. the dealer now is saying they don't have the part available and they will call us when they have it in. how long is acceptable ? does someone have to die before toyota follows through? now that we know this involves our vehicle i don't feel good about operating it. what are our recourses under the law?

I tried repeatedly to have the engine control module replaced in my 2007 corolla as i was instructed to do in three safety recall notices. i brought the car to toyota of el cajon the first time on june 28th after receiving a notice that stated that the parts were ready. the part was (apparently) ordered by toyota of el cajon, and i was asked to leave my car overnight. the next day i was asked to pick up the car because the part had not come in. i was told to wait to make an appointment until the part came in. no one called me to schedule the appointment. i went online around july 18th and scheduled an appointment for july 25th. i brought my car in and waited 1 hour. the service manager then came and told me that the part was not there, and that he would need to re-order it. he told me he would call me and that if i didn't hear from him in a week to call him. i called him two weeks later and he told me that the part was still not in. he told me he would call me to follow up, but never did. i haven't heard back from toyota of el cajon since then. i filed an incident report (110816-000310) on toyota's website on august 16, 2011, but i have not received a response. i also tried calling toyota's customer experience center today, august 23, but the call center is down and i could not get through.

The power died when i was on a very busy thoroughfare at rush hour. i had to cross several lanes of traffic and was barely able to crawl to the shoulder. i was towed to a repair shop and was told the engine computer module was defective. i understand toyota is aware of this problem, but has yet to give recall details to their customers or to their dealerships. what are they waiting for? i could have easily been in an accident or caused one. if toyota won't move on their own, please force them to act. lives are at risk!

On august 11, 2010, while driving our 2007 toyota corolla at about 40 mph the engine suddenly stopped running. we coasted and were able to get pulled off the road safely. the engine would not restart. we called our toyota dealer service department and explained what was going on. they said there was a problem with the computer in the 2007 corollas and that was probably what we were experiencing. we were instructed to have the car towed to the dealer and if that was the case, i.e., computer failure, the tow charge and the repair would be covered under the vehicle warranty, they would hold a service spot open for us that very day and it would be taken care of when we arrived. they quoted a repair time of about 1 hour. we had the car towed to the dealer. it was a computer failure. the repair was completed in about the stated time. if this had happened on the highway in a construction zone where both sides of the road are lined with concrete abutments and there is no place to pull off our outcome may have been very different. it is frightening to think what could have happened to us with a stalled car in a highway construction zone with no way to get out of the flow of traffic. i think the fact that the car can just stop running while being driven has been underplayed.

My 2007 corolla stalled at an intersection. i was waiting at a stop light and then all of a sudden the engine stalled and would not start again. i called a friend who helped me push my car to the side of the road. i then called aaa and they came and towed my car to a car service. this happened at 8:30pm today and so the car service was already closed and i will have to wait till friday morning to understand what caused this. it was a harrowing and terrifying experience and i feared for my safety.

My corolla 2007 stopped on the middle of the road with check engine light suddenly on and battery light is also on without any warning. after two minutes i was able to turn on and drew one block to a mechanic shop and asked them to check battery and other problems. mechanic said battery is weak, he recommended to change battery, but he said some other problems may exist. i asked him to change battery. he changed and it started ok. no check engine light. after i drew three signals, car stopped on the middle of the road again with check engine light suddenly on without any warning and battery light is also on. i towed the car to dealer. as per invoice they did following work. ?p0607- ecm shortened, replaced ecm and re-checked: operates as designed?. my car is under warranty, they did not charge for parts and service. i strongly believe it is a manufacturer defect. if this problem occurred on freeway, that could be dangerous and lead to fatal crash. *tr

Car: 2007 corolla le. incidents: check engine light suddenly came on without any warning while i was on a ramp to merge into the high way on may 1 2010. the car wouldn't speed up when i hit the gas pedal. pulled over to the side of the highway and the engine died. tried to restart the engine, the car cranked but failed to start. on the following monday morning (5/3/2010). tried to get the car to dealership. was able to start the car. the check engine light was still on. engine died after driving for 1 mile. couldn't started it. had the car towed to toyota dealer. bad engine control unit was identified and replaced. this could be a very dangerous situation should the car shut down suddenly at high speed or on a busy street.

My 2007 toyota corolla died while pulling out of a parking lot, i restarted it and when i shifted it back into gear it made a hard clunk and would not get over approxmatly 25miles per hour. i got the care home and the check engine light was on. after reading the owners manual it explained that it could have been the gas cap possibly. removed and reinstalled it the car seenedd to run fine, then the check engine light came back on. the next da yi was driving and the same thing happened, the car have now done this serveral time. i did read on the internet that i'm not the only person having this problem and some people were told it was because of impropper maintance. i not that not to be true.

2007 toyota corolla le 41k miles bought used a month ago.. i been experiencing very similar behavioral patterns as noted in nhtsa recall campaign number: pe09054 . while driving the car normally around 40mph+ and sometimes at highway speeds, very randomly engine stalls or slowly lowers to about 2000 rpm almost immediately the engine light come on.. i tried to give it more gas but engine won't pick up above 2000rpm. i pull over to the side. shut the engine off. then restarts the car with no issues, engine light turns off and i continue driving normally again.. this happens at least 2 times in my daily commute (30 minutes one way) .. and is getting more and more frequent.

2-17-10 2007 toyota corolla stalled on 4 lane highway. i had to rent a car. went back to the car and it started and ran fine for a few days. then started stalling again. once when on interstate i-26 i was in passing lane doing 65 mph and it stalled and i had to get it off the road. i was almost run over by irate motorist. if that's not a safety problem i don't know what is. problem became progressively worse and it would stall every 10-15 miles. took it to mechanic on 3-15-10 and he installed a new oxygen sensor and everything was fine for the next 100 miles. now the check engine light is back on and the mechanic suspects the ecm is the problem. now i'm afraid to drive the car. don't know if used parts are available. *tr

Re my 2007 corolla ce. driving with my husband in my 2007 corolla in 8/09 was making right turn out of residential subdivision onto heavy traffic roads during rush hour. with no warning engine literally stopped dead as i was moving into lane and perhaps 20% of way into lane. engine had been running fine before that with absolutely no indication of problem. fortunately--when engine stopped dead--front of car was not fully in lane into which i was turning and oncoming traffic could move around me. turned off ignition, let set for perhaps 60 seconds; was able to re-start engine; car started and i was able to make it home, driving 1.2 miles. garaged overnight; car started next morning but died halfway out of garage. after 5-10 minutes started again but died after driving 30 yards. had towed to dealer; learned there'd been a dealer's technical service bulletin in 9/08, tsb ego42-07, in re defective part, to quote service mgr bad batch of ecm's in some 2007 toyotas. dealers were supposed to have informed customers of this defective ecm when they brought corollas in for service. please note that i had this corolla serviced at 2 different toyota dealerships between 9/08 and 8/09, date of incident, and neither informed me of this tsb. my husband and i could have been killed in this incident and, since i transport my 4 yr old nephew, he, too, had been at risk. dealership rep shrugged ... could have cared less. this defect should never have been a mere tsb ... there should have been a recall and corolla owners should have been notified. online research at the time indicated that there had been corollas which had died at highway speed, so we were probably fortunate. this could have been catastrophic for us. *tr

In may 21, 2009, when my husband was driving in a 45 mph road, the car speed suddenly couldn't maintain and started to decrease although the accelerator pedal was depressed. then found the car engine stalled and couldn't restart. fortunately, there was no other car hit his car when this happened. but engine suddenly stall while driving, especially in a highway could be life threatening problem, which could be even worse than sudden acceleration. i have read qcsreport00203 report regarding electronic throttle control systems in toyota consumer complaints to nhtsa. in this report it states: it is frequently possible to determine whether an electronic throttle control system is used in an engine in a specific vehicle once the make, the model, the model year, and the corresponding toyota engine family are identified. in 2007 toyota corolla owners' manual, page107, it clearly states: if engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed, there may be a problem somewhere in the electronic throttle control system. from this statement, it tells that toyota does aware the engine sudden stall problem and the defectiveness of the electronic throttle control system. toyota should take responsibility on 2007 corolla as well. *tr

I own a 2007 toyota corolla i bought new. with 17,000+ miles on it the engine control module failed. this event occurred while driving on a heavily traveled road at 45 mph. the car's speed immediately dropped to 15 mph. i avoided accident and injury, but was horrified at the thought i could have been on the freeway when this happened. the next day i had it towed to the dealer. i found it odd that the service writer didn't even blink about this, and that a new engine control module was readily available. the experience made me think this must be a common occurrence. *tw

I bought a 2007 toyota corolla about 3 years ago. i had a very bad experience on jan. 29, 2010. (1) firstly, when i got off work, i could not start the engine. i tried 3 times, and engine was finally started and both the battery and engine check lights were on. i was very worried and decided to go to a dealership the next day. (2) the next morning, i drove to a toyota dealership nearby. when i stopped at a red traffic light on my way to the dealership, my engine was shut off automatically!!! i was so nervous, quickly turned on my emergency light and tried to start the engine again. the engine was started and finally i arrived at toyota dealership. the dealer checked my car and found the engine control module went bad. they replaced it with a new ecm. the problem went away for now. my car is only about 22,000 miles. i am very concerned about the quality of toyota's electronics. *tr

I saw article about 2006 toyota corolla stalling problems. we have a 2007 that has experienced a minor version of this problem since new. at low speed <30mph engine rpm will randomly drop for a few seconds then come back up. does not appear to occur at idle. problem is worse when cold. did not think it serious until i saw the article. the only thing we have done is had our mechanic check for engine codes, no codes reported. we also have a 2008 corolla that does experience this problem. *tr

Re: 2007 toyota corolla ce, purchased in july 2007, approx. 15,000 miles. on 7/29/09, car stalled to a complete stop while driving. luckily, i was not driving on the highway (i-95) as i normally do. stalled on my block after i made turn into street. after a minute, was able to restart with minimal engine power to travel another 100 feet. had to repeat this until i reached my driveway. car was towed to dealership. they told me that this was a defect (wire for the computer dislodged or fell off and caused the problem). there was no indication that this was going to happen. no time to pull off to side of the road. only check engine light appeared when trying to restart engine. this is a very dangerous situation and without some indication that this will happen, there could have been a serious accident resulting in injury or worse. dealer replaced the part that day. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the computer in the vehicle failed and had to be replaced. the computer is related to the gears and power windows. whenever the gears are being shifted, the vehicle would shake severely. the contact had to get new brakes and rotors installed four times since the vehicle was purchased. in addition, the vehicle received numerous alignments because the steering wheel would shake when the brakes were applied. two sensors also caused the engine to stop running. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer for repair numerous times, but the failures still persist. all of the failures began five months after the vehicle was purchased. the failure mileage was 4,000 and current mileage was 60,000.

I have a 2007 toyota corolla s, and i believe there is a manufacturer design flaw that leads to excessive debris and rocks that gain access through the front of the vehicle and will ultimately puncture holes in the ac condenser. since i have owned this vehicle this is the second occurrence of having a punctured hole in my ac condenser. since they say it is caused by a rock the dealership accepts no fault and the warranty does not cover it. they charge $728 dollars to repair the condenser. i am upset because i feel that toyota knows that this problem exists and have done very little to resolve the issue. my car only has 22,000 miles on it yet this has happened twice. very dissatisfied with the design of the vehicle which i feel is the cause. the car should have enough protection in the front end that a rock would not be able to make contact with the ac condenser so easily. *tr

In march 2007, i bought a brand new toyota corolla. more than three months ago my car started having major problems when i try to turn to car on. first the car engine did not turn on right away, so i had to keep trying to turn it on, then the car did not turn on at all. i got stock at the supermarket parking lot one day because the car was dead. i took it to have a battery check and the mechanic told me that the batteries of the car was in excellent condition, so the problem was the engine of the car. couple of weeks later, i received a letter by toyota explaining me that they recalled my car with a major problem in the engine, the letter stated that i needed to be careful because my car engine can turn off while i am driving. i took the car to the toyota dealer to have then check the car, and they did not even touch my car, they told me that when my car turn off again, to call them or have my car toll to their place. two days after i went to the dealership the car started having the same problems. it makes a wear sound when i put my keys in the engine and try to turn the car on. i take any tries before the car turn on, so i called toyotas corporate number and they told me to take my car to the dealership, and it did it; however, they did not even touch my car. they leaved parked on a side of the lot and they waited more than two hours to tell me again that i have to wait until the car does not turn on again so they can take a look of the engine. they told me that toyota is working on a resolution for my problem and by the end of november, i will get a second letter from toyota stating the solution for the problem and to take my car to the dealership so they can fix in. today is december 14, 2010 and i have not received any other communication from toyota. i have not driven my car because i have to kids and i'm afraid that something can happen to us while i am driving my unsafe car. i request an action from toyota because i am paying for a car that i am not using.

My daughter's 2007 corolla check engine light illuminated while driving back to college on 8/29/10. she stated that the car started to jerk periodically also. she was able to drive home safely the following day and i took it to my mechanic on 8/30/10. he said that there was a bulletin released regarding a recall on the ecm and to take it to the dealer for repair. i took it to toyota mall of georgia and handed the service rep the printout of the bulletin and explained what had happened. i asked him if this had to do with the recent recall - he said that this wasn't recent since the date on the bulletin was 2007. he said probably the ecm needed to be replaced and would call when he knew for sure. a few hours later he said that the ecm was replaced at no charge. in the interim, i had done some research and found that there was a recall bulletin issued on 8/26/10 so when i picked up the car later that evening, i questioned a different service rep and he said he didn't know about any recall! huh? didn't the other rep tell me that this was from 2007? i said why did you replace the ecm then, he said because there is a start up issue with the ecm. i told him we weren't having start up trouble, but that the engine light came on and the car started to jerk. i told him what i had learned about the engine stalling while driving and asked him if these issues were fixed with this replacement and he said no, just the start up issue!! he said since there wasn't a recall on the stalling issue, they couldn't fix this. i was totally confused and did not feel safe putting my daughter back in that car. now i see all these complaints going back to 2007 regarding this. toyota has known about this for 3 years and has done nothing to inform the public. meanwhile my daughter has basically been driving a time bomb for the past 3 years!! i don't feel that the replacement has corrected the problem, so now what is my recourse? please help!

My 2007 toyota corolla stalled while driving on more than one occasion. i was told by the dealer it was the computer and it resulted in the dealer replacing the computer. luckily it was under warranty. on one of the occasions, however, i was on a major highway with my 7 year old daughter. not a safe situation.

After driving for some time, the engine light comes on and the car starts to lose power. within one minute the car shakes violently and stalls out. this happened on several occasions for the past year. it happens on the highway and on city streets. when it happens, i have to glide over to the shoulder and hope there

My 2007 toyota corolla engine stalled. i started the engine and went back inside the house and when i returned to the car i noticed the engine was off (which was bizarre because i knew i had turned it on). of course the radio was still on. several attempts to start it either resulted in the car not starting and in other instances it would start for a second and then shut off. i had to borrow my husband's car for the day. when i got home, my husband and i tried starting the engine again and realized that it was stalling, also the engine check light was on. my husband told me he read an article recently about corollas and matrix problems so he went back and read the article online and realized that this was the same issues my car was experiencing. i also checked the corolla manual and saw that the engine light says take the car to toyota immediately.

My 2007 toyota corolla stalled while driving within the city at 45 mph, with the accelerator pedal becoming non responsive and the engine losing out power. the engine check light also went on. this stalling issue happened twice and i had to drive onto the curb to evade potentially dangerous accident in the traffic. both the incidents occurred on 08/06/2008. subsequent to the stalling the car would not start. after trying few time i could get it to start once more and barely managed to drive it to the dealers service station. the dealer kept the car overnight and called me to inform next day that they could not quite figure out the problem and replaced the computer in the car. the car being under warranty i was not charged anything. the dealer comments on my invoice stated - engine ecu malfunction replace engine ecu. (for the stalling problem) immobilizer not responding. (for the engine check light) the incident has not occurred since.

*tr

2007 toyota corolla stalled a traffic light in downtown rush-hour traffic. would start back up, but only idle for 30 sec. and die again. had to have towed to dealer, who diagnosed the problem as the engine control module (ecm). this appears to be a way to common problem as discussed on the toyota forums. seems to occur with mid-30k mileage. mine had 34,800 miles. *tr

Our son was driving my car at approx 55 mph, in the afternoon, in cool clear spring weather... a clunk was heard, the engine died, he was lucky to find a wide spot to pull off the rural two lane highway and coast to a stop. the vehicle was towed to a dealer, diagnoses revealed dtc 607 ecm performance, description computer, engine . the computer was defective, and was replaced with 1 quantity....fp number 89661-02k21 computer for the engine under warranty. (31,858 miles on odometer) thurston's dealership in ukiah gave us great service and a quick turn around time enabling son to commute to college once again with little inconvenience. i'm greatly concerned about this incident and hope my data submission will serve to alert service departments, manufacturers and investigators to our experience with the engine computer chip defect. i want to help prevent the possibility of other drivers being placed in a potentially hazardous situation of loss of engine computer control while driving. *tr
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - EXHAUST SYSTEM

The engine would sound like a go kart. it was the exhaust manifold that was loose at the engine. the leaking exhaust would surely be mixing in with the inside air and would heat up the hood and surrounding areas. bolts needed to be tightened.
