Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 corolla and corolla matrix vehicles. the engine control module (ecm) for the subject models equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive may have been improperly manufactured. there is a possibility that a crack may develop at certain solder points or on varistors on the circuit board.
Consequence SummaryThere are a variety of warnings and consequences associated with the defect. the engine warning lamp could be illuminated, harsh shifting could result, the engine may not start, or the engine could shut off while the vehicle is being driven. an engine shutoff while the vehicle is being driven increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the production number of the ecm and replace the ecm if necessary. this service will be performed free of charge. toyota will mail an interim owner notification the middle of september 2010 to advise owners of this defect and recall. this interim notification will inform owners that they will receive a future notification when parts become available to have the free remedy performed on their vehicle. the safety recall began on november 29, 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

On august 26, 2010, toyota submitted a defect information report to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) regarding problems with engine control modules that could result in engine stall while driving in certain model year (my) 2005 through 2008 toyota corolla, corolla matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles equipped with the 1zz-fe engine and two-wheel drive and manufactured between april 19, 2004 and january 2, 2008.toyota's report indicated that cracks may develop at certain solder point or on varistors on the ecms.according to toyota, such cracks generally resulted in engine warning lamp illumination, harsh shifting or engine no-start.in some cases, if the cracking occurs on particular solder points or varistors, the engine could stop while the vehicle is being driven.toyota will notify owners of subject vehicles that they should return their vehicles to a toyota or pontiac dealer.dealers will be instructed to inspect the production number of the ecm for each vehicle and replace the ecm if necessary.on november 30, 2009, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe09-054) to investigate alleged engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2006 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.in its response to odi's information request, submitted on march 2, 2010, toyota indicated that it had identified two possible conditions with ecms used in my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles:1) cracks forming between the ic and the board caused by an improperly cured conformal coating applied to the circuit boards after the soldering process is completed; and 2) cracks occurring in a variable resistor (varistor) due to overheating.during the manufacturing process a glass coating is created on the surface of the varistor.between march and august 2010, toyota began collecting ecms from the field to further investigate failure modes that may result in engine stall.toyota also conducted durability testing on ecms collected from in-use vehicles to assess whether the problems may be a continuing trend. in addition, they conducted durability testing in order to assess whether this problem was a continuing trend.toyota found that 4 of 32 collected ecms malfunctioned after thermal shock testing.toyota also confirmed that cracking could develop at solder points on the ecm circuit board that could lead to engine stall while driving and that this trend was likely to continue.the manufacturer failure data in this resume is limited to my 2005 through 2007 toyota corolla and corolla matrix vehicles.based on toyota's recall, this engineering analysis has been closed.

I had my toyota corolla 08 serviced on 4/5/11 due to a recall for the engine control module. after the toyota dealer looked at they determined it did not need to be replaced according to lot #7238 and on 8-21-2012 my wife was driving on the highway going 55 mph when all of the sudden the vehicle's electrical system just cut off. luckily there were no cars in front of her at a distance and it started to slow down until she was able to control it and manage to park at the median. she said that the breaks did not work and the power steering did not work. she was terrified at that moment and feared for her life. the next day i took the car to the dealer and explained what had happened. they just told me that there was a recall and it should be fixed immediately. i asked the representative why this recall was not taken care of the first time i went to the dealer. he had told me that at that time it was not necessary to change the part which affected the electrical system. well they should not have wasted my time, but looking back they were negligent on their part. i could have lost my loved one or one of my beloved children which could have devastating for me. *tr

While driving, a strap on the fuel tank and the catalytic converter heat shield both, simultaneously, became loose and began rattling terribly. i continued driving the car in order to get home, a distance of about 200 miles, with the loud noise continuing throughout. i thought the heat shield was loose, which it was, but i did not realize the fuel tank strap had failed, or i would not have continued driving because of the danger of fire. i took the car to the dealership. they showed me that the strap and the shield were both loose because bolts holding them in place had rusted through. this car is not old nor is it driven very many miles. the dealer replaced the strap and the shield at a cost of $476. *tr

Engine check light came on, without apparent reason (i.e. not behind on maintenance schedule). shortly after, engine started stalling; first time just fell like engine was being sluggish and needed to give more gas to get power; second time, car nearly fell still (down to a couple of mph's), even when applying serious gas (and clearly hitting high rpm & engine roaring loudly). just managed to pull the car aside. when towtruck arrived 30 minutes later, problem had disappeared... (for now). a quick check on google sounds like this may be due to many causes, from simple air intake sensor, to more serious ecm problems. either ways, having your engine stall suddenly seems pretty dangerous, especially if this happens in busy traffic. plan to have this checked out immediately. *tr

2008 toyota corolla 4-door sedan ce showed suddenly check engine light while being driven. a few minutes later, the car abruptly turned off and would not restart. vehicle was towed to dealer. informed by dealer that problem was defective engine computer (fp no 89661-02r00) and that corollas in model years 2004-07 commonly had problem. however, no recall has been issued by company though it has extended the warranty on the part. computer replaced without charge. this is a very dangerous defect as it occurs without warning and could have resulted in accident or injury or stranding of the motorist in a dangerous area. also sent letter of complaint to toyota (their file no. 0907142725). *tr

My son has a 2007 corolla. about two weeks ago, he noticed his air conditioning was not cooling. he too it to a toyota dealership to be fixed since he only has 17,000 miles on the car. they refused to fix the condenser. they are trying to say it is a road hazard and his fault. toyota had the same problems with the 2005 and 2006 corolla. now it has happened with the 2007. they want to charge him $800.00. the car is under warranty and there is no reason for something to damage the condenser. if the condenser was protected, this could not happen. we have contacted toyota and they refuse to work with us. *tr

Recieved notice of defect with engine control module in october of 2010 from toyota motor sales usa. follow up notice was stated by toyota to be given at later date. in february 2011 recieved notice from toyota that defect with ecm was confirmed and could cause engine failure and possibly serious injury from driving vehicle caused by the ecm failure. our car was already suffering the exact systems of ecm failure. immediately took vehicle to don mcgill toyota located at 21555 katy, freeway, katy, texas 77450. spoke with assistant service manager, eddie marlow of don mcgill toyota dealership. mr. marlow informed me that don mcgill toyota and toyota did not have a replacement part for the defect in stock and it would have to be ordered from the manufacturer, toyota. mr. marlow also stated he would call me to schedule the defective part replacement in 3-5 business days upon the part arrival from toyota the manufacturer. well it has been almost 2 weeks now and i have not recieved any call from mr. marlow or toyota to replace the defective ecm. it is apparent to me that toyota and don mcgill could care less about safety to my family while driving this defective vehicle manufactured by toyota and sold to me by don mcgill. would please intervene in the name of safety for my family and others that have purchased this defective car product before injury occurs!

Monday, august 23, 2010, while driving on a main highway with a hill my car stalled. my check engine light was the only thing showing in my dash. i pushed the gas pedal to the floor; the vehicle continued to slow down and i was frightened that someone would rear end me or that my car would start rolling back down the hill. thank god no one was traveling at the legal speed of 65 mph when this happened. i turned my vehicle back in the direction that i came from to have my husband help me look for why this happened. he said most likely it was the battery and replaced it that evening. tuesday, august 24, 2010, late evening i parked my car in a poteau oklahoma shopping center for about an hour after driving some twenty plus miles. i returned to my car; it appeared to start ok; however, when i shifted to drive it shifted hard and the vehicle began lurching forward. the check engine light had come back on. i shifted toward park and noticed that when it reached the reverse on gear shift console the hard shift lessened but in park no harshness or lurching. i phoned my husband that it had happened again and he came with the car hauler and hauled my vehicle home. please do not allow toyota corporation to issue only a technical service bulletin, my warranty (36,000) recently expired. i have not yet taken to service.
