On february 18, 2010, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation pe10-008 to investigate complaints of steering wander or drift in model year (my) 2009 and 2010 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles.the complaint descriptions indicated dissatisfaction with the on-center steering feel in the subject vehicles. some drivers (~25%) related the feel to driving in a strong crosswind and others indicated that the effort and attention required to maintain heading increased driver fatigue on long trips.these complaints all relate to the system operating as designed and do not involve failure of any steering system components.the subject vehicles are equipped with an electronic power steering system that was introduced in the my 2009 vehicles.the power assist, including on-center steering feel, is controlled electronically and is part of the system calibration.toyota responded to steering feel concerns from some customers by issuing a technical service bulletin (tsb-0140-10 steering on-center feel) that released an optional eps electronic control unit that has a re-calibrated on-center feel.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted by the circumstances.for further details see the attached vrtc and odi closing reports.

Vehicle lost power steering on freeway, all electronic components shut down and i was stranded on the side of the freeway. the car would not start, after $3200.00 in repairs, the mechanic said the pistons looked like they were from a 30 year old car. regular oil changes, well maintained, this car is not reliable! *tr

A week ago after picking my son, i noticed that when i turned the steering wheel of my 2009 toyota corolla to a certain point, my whole steering wheel was moving and making a grinding noise. i brought it to copeland toyota the dealership where i purchased my new car back in 2008. mon. 9/10 i called to obtain the status of my vehicle. i was told a bolt came out of the steering column and they were trying to get the bolt back in. normal wear and tear would say a bolt falls out a new bolt goes in, not trying to get back in. i was also told that the worst that would happen is that they would need to replace the steering column. i filed a claim with toyota as i am no longer under warranty ( 1 yr and 4,000 ml over). later monday, toyota stated that the bracket of the steering column is the issue and the whole unit would need to be replaced. when i asked the service dept, i was dealing with; if this fell under normal wear and tear he told me it did not. tuesday 9/11, i heard back the toyota corporate office that they would not be paying for this and that i would be responsible for the bill, that is just over $2000.00. i spoke with [xxx] at the dealership who is the service manager & he himself mentioned that this is a unique case. regardless if it covered under warranty or not, this is a safety issue, one that is not from normal wear and tear and i certainly did not create. i was told that i haven't had my car serviced there for a year, everyone knows that dealerships costs for preventive maintenance is extremely pricey and i didn't go there for oil changes and tire rotations, i did bring it in for this specific issue. when have you ever heard of any car company dropping your steering column to check bolts during a routine maintenance check? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Very strong vibration has been present in my steering column. i took it to the dealer which told me it was the rear struts. replaced them $600.00. the mechanic noted in his notes that vibration was still bad upon releasing the car to me. i was told i needed new tires and balancing. i took it elsewhere and had new tires and balancing done. the problem still present today. i took it in again today and was told it was now my roters. new pads, roters and another alignment with rear brakes cleaned and re balance another $450.00. this whole time i have been feeling that the problem is in the steering column. now i learn there was an investigation reguarding my make and model for that year. i am to get my car back this afternoon and will want something investigated if the problem is still there. *tr

Steering lost response to wheels, after correction, steering will not come back to center' car wanders from side to side you must keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times, problem has happened before.. we had tires rotated, wheel alignment, alignment shop says the problem is with electronic computer which controls steering

Unstable steering, when you are driving over 60 miles an hour it has a tendacy to wander over the whole road. if there is a cross wind it really is bad. the wife will not drive it. i have talked to other customers they have a similiar complaint. seems to get worse with age of car. when i take the car in to get it serviced i mention the steering and they say there is no problem. they do not write it down on the service request either. i guess they do not want a record. thsi is the second time to day the other time it quit in the middle. i am reentering.

Electronic power steering (eps) turns off every once in a while. as a result, steering get very heavy and requires a lot of force to turn the steering wheel. i had to turn off the car and turn it back on to reset the eps motor.

I just recently purchased a certified used 2009 toyota corolla with only 25,000 miles on it. i've noticed that steering this vehicle, especially at highway speeds, can be a challenge. the car seems to have a mind of its own sometimes because out of nowhere the car will abruptly veer to the left or right. i've already taken this vehicle back to the dealer and they checked the wheel alignment, rotated the tires, and adjusted the tire air pressure. they notified me that everything was up to specification. on april 16, 2012 a box blew out of the back of a truck on a highway and when i swerved to avoid it i almost lost control of the vehicle. when i got home i got online and found a ton of people complaining about the same issue with their 2009-2010 corolla. apparently it has to do with the new electronic power steering they initiated in 2009. perhaps they should go back to the old hydraulic power steering system. please help!!

While making a left turn yesterday,my steering wheel started shifting so hard that made me lose control of the car, causing me to spin and hit another car also turning left.i was driving with caution, especially because it had been previously raining, but the worst part is that it's not the first time this has happened to me.i reported another accident in 2010 caused by the same failed component.i was driving on a straight lane while raining and all of the sudden my steering wheel lost control and my car span 2 times, making me end on a ditch. thanks god the road was clear, so my car didn't hit any other car;however, this has been the most terrifying experience of my life!; it left me with a trauma that was with me for over a year. it made me terrified of driving this car, especially under raining conditions. after that i bought new tires, then took it to toyota to get checked.they said the steering was in fact shifting, and that the computer that controls it wasn't working correctly, so they replaced it.i felt more secure afterwards,so i drove my car normally, still feeling the shift under windy conditions, blaming it on the wind for not feeling terrified anymore..until yesterday!this time causing me to crash onto another car!now i'm scared to death to drive my car, and have to lose time, stress and aggravation on something that should've been a recall years ago! it is ridiculous that after having the power to force any company who's not following security regulations, the nhtsa is still not censuring toyota who claims so strongly security first.how many wrecks, injuries and deaths need to occur for nhtsa to realize this as a major safety issue because it affects the driver in such an abrupt manner! something needs to be done now! god forbids, this happens again and i'll make sure all organizations/corporations involved get sued for not taking drastic measures.

When car is driven at highway speeds, 70-75 mph, steering pulls left and right rapidly, causing car to become very unstable in handling. seems to drift in its lane. when driving it is very unpredictable. i just purchased this vehicle used and became aware of it. no accident issues only 40,000 miles contacted toyota dealer in green bay, and they said they never heard of any complaints regarding the 2009 corolla electric assisted power steering. further stated i should 'try and find something on the internet' to show if there are any issues.. complete stonewalling..

At around 50 miles on up the car starts to wander all over the road . it does not matter if you have 1 or 2 hands on the wheel . the car just drifts from side to side. i am an ase certified mechanic and i cant understand why there is no saftey recall involving such a serious condition. toyota is asking for a lot of trouble if they cant find a fix for this issue

The steering is terrible. every time i get onto the highway, i have to hold on to the steering wheel very hard with both hands to feel safe. i am always worried about hitting the car next to. the car swerves constantly, and is very hard to control. i can not believe that a relatively new car such as this can not stay straight on the road. it feels as if it were extremely windy outside making the car shake left and right. i have always trusted toyota and thought that they sold nothing but the best. i have lost the joy and excitement in driving. please correct this dangerous issue. blind spots are also a major safety issue i have found. also, there is an extremely annoying rattle inside the car. it sounds like it is coming from the ceiling, and from the rear windshield. it is noticeable at all speeds. *tr

I own a 2009 corolla which i bought in september of 2008. around june 1st i began having trouble with my steering wheel. while making a sharp turn i heard a loud pop. after that my steering wheel did not feel right the rest of the way home. when i parked in my driveway with my wheels straight i noticed my steering wheel was upside down. the next morning it was fine. 2 weeks later the same thing happened again. i took it to the dealership and was told the computer did not show anything wrong and if the steering wheel had turned upside down there would have been an error message on the computer. i had shown them pictures proving that it happened. they told me they had no idea what the problem was so there was nothing they could do. i am afraid to drive my car on interstates now because i am afraid the steering will go out completely and cause me to wreck. i know toyota has had several complaints about steering problems in the 2009 corolla. i just want to know that my car is safe to drive and apparently no one can tell me that.

This morning while driving at 55 mph on the highway our 2009 corolla seemed to jerk itself out of the middle of 5 lanes of traffic, started spinning, hit the guard rail with the right rear tail section. the car essentially bounced off the rail, continued to spin across the lanes of traffic and back, coming to a rest back on the same side i hit the guard rail. i was extremely lucky that no other cars managed to be involved in this accident. from the minute the car first jerked out of control until it came to a rest i could not gain any control over the stearing or movement of the car. the car has done this to a lesser degree on a few occasions over the past few months (car was purchased used, from a dealer, 3/13/2010) which we thought might be due to hydroplaning (we're in seattle where the roads are often wet but we've driven here for 35 years with nothing like this feeling in any other car) or a need for new tires but this was clearly not the only issue. on those occasions it also felt like the car was suddenly floating and the steering jerked it to the left (but i was not going through a deep puddle/hydroplaning). it was momentary but enough to scare me and make me wonder what had just happened. it was raining this morning at the time of the accident but something else caused the car to jerk itself out of the lane and lose control of the steering. it is currently in the body shop awaiting an estimate for repair. the toyota dealer didn't want to look at it despite my description. i'm left traumatized, with likely whiplash and a wrecked car. this car is not safe! we are afraid to drive this car anywhere! i will also be contacting toyota corp. regarding the apparent problem, the accident and the dealership's dismissal.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact was driving 60 mph when the vehicle began to lose power abnormally. the instrument panel gauges would fluctuate oddly and the power steering, power brakes and headlights all became inoperable. the dealer made two attempts to duplicate the failure and advised the contact to have the battery replaced and that the symptoms would be normal if the battery was the culprit of the failure. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who advised the contact to have the alternator replaced. the contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle repaired. the current mileage was 52,000 and the failure mileage was 42,000.

Electric power steering over corrects. dangerous while driving at high speeds. first time i had to report a life threatening incident. my 2009 toyota caused me to pull over twice to check the steering. it felt as if was hit with by heavy winds. while driving at above 60mph i was fighting to control the steering, the car would cross over lanes was about to loose total control, on several long turns in the hgwy. at times it was safer to drive with no hands.!!! there was no mechanical noise while driving, but i'm now afraid of the car, my daily commute is 80 miles. i purchased this card second hand from a dealer. today i registered the car with toyota.com after my terrifying experience; to my surprise the previous owner had reported a long list of issues from faulty sensors to steering problems. hate to assume that this was the reason to trade-in the car. but ill be looking to do the same. i hope this helps nhtsa investigate this issues.
03/22/201139600
My 2009 toyota corolla purchased in december of 2010 has wandered slightly while driving at highway speed since i purchased it. this has been an intermittent occurrence that often left me questioning alignment or road condition until today when while driving to work the problem again occurred and unlike the previous occurrences where the car would drift slightly much like what might occur while driving in high wind, the car began to swerve in and out of the lane requiring me to come to nearly a complete stop in the middle of a freeway. this is my 3rd toyota and 2nd corolla (2003) traded in for this vehicle. i have been driving since 1977 and am a safe driver that understands that different models and equipment changes may create subtle differences from vehicle to vehicle. this condition is not however, something one can contribute to anything logically related as it starts without warning, usually at speeds over 50 to 55 mile per hour and in varying severity. this was a nuisance until today and now is something that leaves me fearful to drive as had there been a vehicle next to me, a collision most likely would have been unavoidable. the road surface was clear, the weather was clear and the wind was low, so weather did not play as a factor.
02/23/2011
This is my first complaint i've ever filed with the nhtsa, and it is because i believe now that our car is incredibly dangerous to drive unless substantial changes are made to the electric power steering. we recently purchased our 2009 toyota corrolla, and at highway speeds (60-75 mph) the car is pushed around by wind constanty. even if it isn't windy though, the car still will not track straight, and feels as though wind is pushing it from side to side. a few days ago, on a fairly windy day, i had to hold the steering wheel to the right to keep going straight and prevent the car from being pushed into the left lane on the highway. as soon as a short break in the wind happened though the car would then shoot over the line to the right (where the steering wheel was pointed to counteract the force of the wind pushing the vehicle to the left). although on calm days it is sometimes only an annoyance, on windy days (even in light winds) it can become extremely dangerous at 70mph. i have owned many different vehicles over my years, and this is by far the worst handling car on a highway that i have ever driven.

07/29/2009 - 09 toyota corolla. the vehicle would have an intermittent delay upon start up and intermittent power steering lock up when making sharp turns. during the power steering failure the vehicle would also lose radio and a/c as if the vehicle was powering down. i took the car to my dealership where i had purchased the vehicle less than a month before these issues. my first incident happened in a parking lot in front of another vehicle luckily the other driver was paying attention and did not hit me. another incident happened on an exit off ramp which was a very sharp circular portion of road, the power steering completely went out and i had to muscle through the turn, suddenly the power steering was working again which almost caused me to lose control of the vehicle due to me going from using all my might to turn back to the vehicle working properly. my service dealership recalibrated steering torque sensor and found tsb 0182-09 for hard start condition, reprogrammed engine computer and added fuel tank additive per bulletin instructions. i drove the vehicle a few days until once again my car had the exact same issue. 07/31/09 i took my vehicle back to my dealership for service again. service order states; inspect steering operation found eps will cut out and cause radio, headlights to cut out. scan check record and flag events. test and recharge battery pass. open tech line case review data. zero point and monitor again per tech assist failed after 3 turn. s/o power column assy. 31972.replaced power steering column assembly and also found loose pwr supply wire nut causing voltage drop to system. tightened nut and test drove. verified now checks ok. sept 17,2010 vehicle total loss in single driver/vehicle accident. my 17 yr old son lost control and hit a tree. he suffered traumatic brain injury and cannot tell me the cause of the accident.

2009 corolla seems to float all over the road and can't keep it straight. just today the electric power steering sensor light came on. until now i thought it may have been the wind or my tires. i purchased new tires but still the same problem of wondering all over the road. i experience this at all speeds.

I was driving along the freeway at a normal speed of about 55-65mph, when suddenly my car start swerving right and left, and i have no way of stooping the car but to hold the steering wheel all the way to the left so it would hit the dividing wall of the freeway to stop it moving.

I drive a 2009 toyota corolla s. starting today i refuled my car and when i started the car again the steering was extremely hard to move. i tried restarting it three times before the steering was back to the way it normally turns. later that day i started my car again and heard a buzzing from the steering column and the power steering went away again. i restarted the car and power steering was back. again that day i started my car and proceeded to back up when the power steering went and the wheel locked up turning left as i was backing up. i almost hit a wall in a parking garage and had to restart my car until power steering was regained. i made it back to my office and will drive my car straight to the selling dealership after work.

My 2009 corolla le has been having front end aligment / steering problems since new. it started shortly after buying it, i took it in for it's first oil change and asked the dealer to look into the aligment since the steering wheel was off center. this happened again 2-3 times afterwards, then i finally had brakes serviced and had it aligned. 2-3 days later after aligment i noticed the wheel off center again. i am a busy person so i decided to take it for due oil change and have them take a look at the the steering once again because now is getting worse, is pulling to the right and the other day i over compensated taking a left turn and hit the curb which caused to bend the lip of a wheel, lucky for me no air got out of the tire. now i have to buy a new wheel, that one would never balance. please help, there is something wrong with the front end of this car, maybe a recall should be made.

My 2009 toyota corolla continues to be all over the road at highway speeds. i have to make constant corrections in steering to keep in within the lane. the eps is way too sensitive. very dangerous and produces driver fatigue and potential for overcorrections. i have read in consumer reports that toyota has addressed this and is offering a fix, only to those customers who complain, to replace the eps control module. i contacted my dealer on 9/24/2010 and the service manager stated he knew nothing about this fix. the dealers were supposed to know about this in june 2010 from a service bulletin from toyota corporate. please require toyota to issue a recall to replace the eps control module as the dealers are reluctant to fix upon request from the customer.

It was rainning on 441 and i was doing 45mph, all of the sudden the steering wheel started drifting a lot switching me from one lane to another. i completely hydroplanned.i started spinning, almost hitting a big wooden pole, and i ended up falling into a big ditch full of water. it was the most scarring feeling i've ever had.thanks god there weren't any more cars, so i didn't hit anyone. after that incident i got the car checked by a friend. they told me the dealer was so irresponsible for selling me the car with 2 rear tires that were almost worn out. i thought that could've been the reason why i hydroplanned, so i changed the 2 rear tires for new ones after that. after driving it again, over a bridge, the steering drifted again. i didn't spinned, but it pulled me to the right, enough to got me scared again, and it wasn't even rainning. after that other incident i drove it many more times on the highway, and everytime under highway speeds or when i passed by a big truck or anything that made the wind push the car, i kept feeling the steering wheel drifting. i just got this toyota corolla '09 like 3 weeks ago and i can definitely say this vehicle is so prone to drifting, specially at highway speeds, and i think people should be aware of this deffect to either get their cars fixed or to not buy any of these year model car, because it goes against your own safety and other people's.

My 2009 corolla will not go exactly straight at highway speeds. close, but not exactly straight. steering must have a very minor correction about every 3-5 seconds to keep the car in or near the center of the lane. this is a safety hazard. 1. if the driver fails to do the constant correction the keep the car in the lane, the car would veer out of the lane - increased possibility of a crash. 2. the concentration required to do the constant minor steering correction keeps the driver from observing surroundings and other traffic - increased possibility of a crash. 3. on a long trip the concentration required correcting the vehicle increases driver fatigue - increased possibility of a crash. i read in the news that spokesman brian lyons said toyota believes most of the complaints involved wandering from the center steering position that didn't amount to a safety problem. and on june 3, toyota issued a bulletin to dealers telling them to address complaints by checking the tire pressure and alignment. if those steps are insufficient, the bulletin told dealers they could replace the computer that governs the electric power steering with a new unit, which toyota said had been re-tuned with an alternative steering feel.. as of aug 18, 2010, my local dealer says he knows of no problem with corolla steering and can not find a service bulletin about 2009-20010 corolla steering.

Steering requires constant driver correction to go straight down the highway. car pulls to the left or right, but won't track straight when driving on the highway. this occurs whenever the car is driven at highway speeds. when driving on windy days, it's more difficult to control because crosswinds add to the instability. took car do dealer for repair but the dealer said steering couldn't be adjusted and that they wouldn't be able to correct the problem. this is dangerous because the car wants to wander out of lane, and the constant steering corrections become fatiguing on long trips. as an example, i drove it from home to arizona and back on a vacation, and my wrists and forearms were sore for a week after the trip. i've made this exact trip in another vehicle and had no such problems. the other vehicle tracks straight and the corolla does not. because my dealer will not help me with this issue and the corolla has depreciated significantly, i am pretty much stuck with a car that has a problem. i'm hoping nhtsa might be able to help. there are plenty of other drivers who are experiencing the same issue with the same car model. i would like to see toyota make adjustments to the steering of these cars so that they exhibit the steering traits of a normal car, which tends to track straight, or even slightly to the right.

From when new the car wanders and drifts when at highway speeds. have tried to get dealers to fix with no success. went to lemon law arbitration with toyota but was declined. dealer will only give about $7 -$8 thousand for trade, the car only has 7,600 miles on it. three or four weeks ago was making a hard right turn when lost steering control and ran off the road and did some vehicle damage. afraid to let my wife drive the car, have only put 500 miles on it since january 2010.

Problem with electronic steering system on 2009 toyota corolla when driving with high speed (60-80 mph). the car rocks from left and right and is hard to keep it going straight. took the car to toyota dealership and was told that they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I have a number of complaints regarding the power steering on my 2009 toyota corolla. to begin with ithe steering is extremely unresponsive. at low speeds the steering is extremely loose feeling. this has resulted in a couple of near accidents in parking lots where i was barely able to maneuver out of the way in time. at higher speeds the steering is stiff and difficult to steer. whether or not your driving fast or slow the steering is sluggish and unresponsive. it is much like driving a car with normal power steering on a sandy beach. you simply do not have proper control. it seems like these problems are getting worse over time as well. i put very few miles on the car and take very good care of it as it is in almost mint condition. there is very little wear and tear on my corolla at 6500 miles. the extremely unresponsive steering on the 2009 toyota corolla makes defensive driving very difficult. it makes conpensating for other drivers actions and mistakes by avoiding them very difficult and is a dangerous vehicle to drive as a result.

I have a 2009 toyota corolla that drifts on its own at highway speeds, with no change in steering. i drive 25,000 miles a year and this is a real problem, and i don't believe this is a tire or alignment issue! when i had the car in for the gas pedal recall i asked them about this issue and they stated until there is a recall issued they didn't have a fix. i couldn't believe that they didn't want to at least look at the problem while it was there. i love the car and i'm a big toyota fan but they need to fix this!

Can't keep car from wandering all over road side to side
05/15/2010
My 2009 corolla steering is terrible at highway speeds, it wanders all over my lane requiring constant steering wheel correction. the best way to describe it is it feels like a huge gust of wind is constantly blowing the car around at speeds above 40mph. i've had an independent shop check the alignment and they say its fine. now that i've started investigating this problem it seems there are a lot of corolla owners with this same problem. i have not contacted toyota about the problem with my car but all of the other corolla owners say they were told by toyota that was just the way that car handles. please make toyota fix this problem on these cars.

05/01/201040000
I am following up on this complaint #10318215 regarding the steernig problems with my corolla leading to drifting and unsteadiness while driving at higher speeds. the symptoms on my 2009 corolla with the steering column are getting worse. the drifts are getting more pronounced and at times feel more like a swerve. the frequency of the drifting has increased. also, i am noticing the uneasiness at slower speeds. in short, i do not feel safe driving this car, and i experienced a scary incident of my car swerving out as a truck passed me. as much as possible, i try to avoid freeway driving, which is a big hassle, considering that i have a 56-mile roundtrip work commute. this commute is mostly all free way driving on route 8 & 77 and the turnpike. to compensate, i need to take the back roads, adding an extra fifteen minutes to my commute. the dealership has been in contact with toyota corporate who are saying that there is no problem and that the case has been closed with nhsta. what am to do when the dealership admits to not knowing how to fix the problem and the regional service rep for toyota says there there is on problem and that the case with the steering column is closed. please help. what am i to do? i am driving an unsafe car. i am restricted as to the use of my car. there is no resolution in site from what i can see. please feel free to contact me with any questions at 330-688-2465 or hudiak@hotmail.com. i look forward to your reply. ken hudiak

The steering on my 2009 toyota corolla xle has been an issue since the day i purchased it. there is a complete lack of steering 'feel' which results in oversteer and drifting into another lane or off the road. numerous times cars in other lanes have had to make corrections to avoid a collision due to the drifting of my corolla. keeping the corolla in your lane requires complete concentration which results in driver fatigue. often i find myself 'twitching' the steering wheel back and forth to stay in my lane or on the pavement. i have taken my corolla into the dealer and the dealer claims there is nothing wrong with the suspension. the dealer suggested there might have been a problem with the tires. i had the tires replaced with the highest quality michelin tires available for my corolla , had an alignment accomplished, and had the tires filled with nitrogen. these actions did not help the steering issues at all. there is a dangerous defect with the 2009 toyota corolla steering that needs to be addressed. at some point, loss of life is inevitable due to this problem and probably has already occurred. nhtsa, the owners of 2009 corollas and all those that share the roadways with us desperately need for you to intervene to compel toyota to address this problem. this is a major problem that has been well documented by various entities that test drive and write reviews on automobiles. additionally, many individual owners have posted similar steering complaints in numerous forums on the web. help!

My 2009 toyota corolla continues to have steering issues...oversteering, not staying centered in its lane. i have been to the dealership probably 12 or more times with this vehicle. i have had repeated problems with issues that i reported starting in late 2008. these issues are now under recall. i am still deeply concerned about the steering of my corolla. i drive it as little as i can trying to stay off of the turnpike. i am concerned that this problem is actually unrepairable. i have contacted toyota corporate more times than i can remember. additionally, i have contacted both of my senators and also my congresswoman. i need this issue very carefully investigated. my son drove a corolla for many years and never had this problem. i need your help and my guess is that others do as well.

I had very scary experience with toyota corolla 2009 on highway drive. i am not able to control steering over 60mph. at higher than 60 mph the car is either shifting towards right or left. it was strange to see other vehicles are passing my car with no problems. i was holding my steering with both the hands but still its not in control .

My 2009 toyota corolla has a steering problem. the steering is too sensitive. if i look down for just a second or two, the car drifts off the road or it drifts into other lanes quickly. it is especially bad when the wind blows. it happens all of the time especially during medium to high speeds. it contributed to two separated accidents where the car drifted into the guardrail causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) 2009 toyota corolla with 9500 miles, has steering issue at speeds over 60 mph. steering goes soft and feels like driving a shopping cart with loss of stability, wandering in lane, and feeling of wind gusts around car when it is not a windy day. experienced in prior months beginning november 2009, bought car new in july 2009, mostly city driving, though. drove from va beach to dc on april 7, 2010, returned april 8, 2010. routes driven were 64 and 95. most of stability loss occurred on southbound 95 in heavy traffic. i am an experienced driver with no accidents of any kind in over 30 years. i have driven toots primarily. i am filing this to report the unsafe condition, but there was no accident. since originally feeling the stability loss in november, 2009, i have tried to catalog the times the car's steering is amiss. overwhelmingly, it occurs at speeds of 65-70 mph, and in order to control the wandering, i grip the wheel tightly, like i am driving a snowmobile down a bumpy hill. it is exhausting, and very, very distracting. only in the heavy traffic on 95 recently, i felt very unsure of my ability to control the car. i plan to discuss all of this with the local toyota dealer.  I am having a problem with toyota steering.i tried calling 3-4 times at toyota santa monica, california tried doing online request on recalled car's appointment but everytime they said me that they will call me back but nobody called. i begin experiencing the steering issue again and when i went to the office here in santa monica they asked me to come back.they said office is open until 7pm but i went at 5pm and they did not assisted me. anyways, i dont know what to do, my car has 3-4 recalls but none of them are addressed until now.

Since purchased, i have noticed at speeds over 40-50 mph the car is very difficult to keep moving in your lane. it feels as if a gust of wind blows the car either left or right out of its lane, yet it happens when there is no wind whatsoever. it requires two hands to be firmly placed on the wheel in order to keep control of your car and not pass into another lane. took it to dealer, the found no problem and was unable to replicate the situation.
03/30/201016000
The car's power steering turns by itself when hitting bumps or rough patches on the road at higher speeds. it takes awareness and effort at times to keep the car straight. although probably not an immediate safety threat, i imagine if not remedied, it will be a problem that gets worse and not better over time. this is an issue that occurs daily.

Lose some control over 2009 corolla when driving at highway speeds. car acts like it is being hit by a gust of wind from the side. usually ends up pushing the car a number of feet to the right but i am able to get it under control before any accident occurs (so far). this is a recurring problem and always happens at highway speeds, ever since i purchase the car.

I purchased a toyota corolla 2009 new the steering is dangerous. if you happen to look away from the road in front of you for a moment, you may find yourself heading out of your lane when you look back. a friend of mine drove a toyota corolla from the state of georgia to new york and didn't notice any problem with the steering. i ask him to test drive my car he noted it was difficult to stay in the lane the one he drove up from georgia tracked straight and true. i took my corolla back to the dealership they said every thing was in speck . i did some searching on the web and found there have been some accidents involving this car and the nhtsa has received over 820 complaints at this time. please add mine to your growing list. ps with the growing number of young kids using cell phones and texting these days they do not stand a chance in @#$% driving a car like this. *tr

Bought a new 2009 corolla s in late august, 2009. the car has had a problem with steering since new. at highway speeds, the car is constantly floating from lane to lane because the new drive by wire electric motor tells the car to be in a constant correction mode, there is no center driving position. it's always either correct left, or correct right. this makes the driver have to constantly re-correct', and results in a constant zig-zag pattern at 65mph! that's driving like a drunk drives. the car drives like it's in a wind storm, even though there is no wind, and you can't predict when the next gust will drift you into the next lane. greatly disappointed that toyota would continue to allow these cars on the road without a fix. was told by the toyota service manager that my car drives as designed. i know that, it's a bad design. saw where there are many complaints about this on this site, we're not complaining just for the fun of it, we're honestly concerned for our safety. i also own three other older toyota's, a camry, a cressida, and a tercel with close to 300k miles. all of them drive better than this new corolla. shame on toyota for allowing this to remain a problem. was planning on giving this car to my daughter at college graduation. now i don't want her to drive it unless it's fixed. i also know of two other buyers of 2009 toyota corollas, both s models, that have the same steering issues. complaints unanswered by toyota. my corolla only has 5200 miles since last august, it mostly sat for the first few months, as i hated to have to drive it. sad to have a new car and have to just endure driving it. toyota needs to expedite a fix, before someone drifts into the path of a big rig. help!! it could still be a good car, just fix the steering!!

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla in june of 2008. up until approximately the fall of 2009, it appeared to be driving satisfactorily. however, after that time, at highway speeds, the car drifts almost each and everytime this happens, i open my window to see if it is windy, because it feels like the car is being blown by the wind. my son sometimes drives my car and i asked him if he experienced this, and he said yes, and it always attributes it to the wind, however, it is not always windy. it feels like there is a slight lack of control. needless to say, it is very unnerving. i would say that in the past 3 months i notice this problem 3 times a week. when googling about the current toyota problems, i came across a write up regarding toyota steering problems. then, i knew i wasn't just imagining what i had experienced. therefore, i am hereby voicing my complaint.

2009 toyota corolla; same steering issues (at highway speed) noted by other drivers. steering feels unstable, at times car feels as though it might veer into another lane. happens regularly.

I own a 2009 toyota corolla s. i test drove this vehicle locally and did not think to drive it on the the highway. i placed an order of this vehicle shortly after the test drive to get preferred color interior/exterior of car. i noticed a couple days after when taking it on the highway, at about 60-65 mph it sways from left to right of lane. i have had this car for a year now and this happens every time i go over 60 mph on the 94 highway. i do not feel safe driving on the highway, i drive mostly locally for this reason. when i do drive on the highway i always need to be extra causcious and pay extra attention to steering and it worries me especially on days when it is real windy and it makes it real difficult for me to steer. i have talked to toyota dealers about this issue i have been experiencing and they told me it was nothing to be concerned with and that it was because of road crown. i do not believe this is the issue and am very concerned.

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact was driving approximately 55 mph. the vehicle began to sway from the left to the right. the failure occurred at any speed being traveled. additionally, as the vehicle speed increased there was difficulty in steering. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. the failure could not be reproduced. the current and failure mileages were 13,000.

I would like to file a complaint about the electronic power steering in my 2009 toyota corolla s. at highway speeds greater than 55 mph, there is an inherent inability in the steering system to completely control the vehicle. the car will suddenly veer to the left or the right with no input from the steering wheel, as if sudden gusts of wind were blowing the vehicle from side to side. maintaining a straight line path at this speed is far more difficult and requires far more attention than any other vehicle i have ever driven. without an immediate reaction to this unnatural feeling steering system, the vehicle is in danger of entering another lane or veering off the road. although i have somewhat gotten used to the very peculiar handling of this model's eps and no longer feel it is dangerous to drive on the highway, i feel that a recall to improve the poorly tuned steering (at least on the s trim) is prudent and will reduce the number of highway accidents, injuries, and deaths. *tr

Specifically at highway speeds, my 2009 toyota corolla will sometimes feel like it is encountering a very strong crosswind. it has happened a number of times since i owned the vehicle, but it is infrequent and so far has not caused much concern as far as safety. i have contacted toyota by email for several weeks and i have not received a response. additionally, when it does happen, it only lasts about 2-5 seconds and although it feels like a strong crosswind is blowing, there has been no wind. the tires are also in good shape and are routinely rotated and balanced. i do not know if this is a major issue or not, but a web search has found that others are having the same issue. i am very disturbed by that, and especially since toyota has chosen not to respond to my complaints. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving at speeds of 60 mph, the steering wheel exhibited minimal resistance, causing the front end of the vehicle to sway outside of the traveled lane without driver intent. the failure would occur intermittently. the dealer stated that there were no recalls on his vehicle pertaining to that type of failure. the contact also stated that he would often experience sudden surging of the vehicle engine upon removing his foot from the accelerator pedal and traveling at a steady speed on the freeway. the approximate failure mileage was 49,000 and the current mileage was 52,000.

I was driving in a parking lot on the main driveway leading out of parking lot. i was stuck by a truck in the rear passenger side. the other drivers truck struck my back wheel taking most of the impact. wheel physically looks straight and does not show any wobble when watching it drive. no airbags deployed yet i could not steer or brake my vehicle. almost as if everything froze when i was impacted. vehicles power was still on but nothing worked after impact. i ended up crashing into shopping carts and curb after impact because i could not stop. this could have been a disaster if i was not in a parking lot. i would be dead if this was on a highway. *tr

The vehicle steering is very sensitive at highway speeds. also when another vehicle passes the car the corolla becomes very unstable and is difficult hold in the lane. the steering has been like this since new and the dealer says they can do nothing to fix it.
06/28/2009200001
About three months after i bought my 2009 corolla i noticed that the steering wasn't acting right during high speeds on the interstate, heavy wind, and rain. it pulls to the side sometimes and then other times feels like i have no control, in the past couple months it's started to make noise when i turn the wheel. i've been trying for over a year to get this settled with the dealership but they won't do anything and won't even do a service report at all, saying that it's fine. i was even in an accident that involved several other cars, but the severe damage could've been prevented if my steering hadn't of messed up on me. there have been numerous other incidences where my car's veered off the road and almost veered into another car, i was fortunate enough to not be involved in accidents those times - however, i have a 2 year old daughter and i can't take any chances. *tr

On, march 7, 2010 around 6:30pm, going on the highway, without any warning. the 2009 toyota corolla model le, went totally out of control. i was on the far right lane, heading from toa baja to mayaguez on pr-22. reaching arecibo, by highway mark (km 74.2) the car steering went totally to the left and in fractions of seconds my car invaded the left lane doing a 180 degree turn, had cars coming my way and just when i tough the other car was going to hit me. the steering on the car went completely the opposite direction and the car rolled again and i was going over the green area crazy fast. no control, spinning again over the grass area on the middle of the highway, heading right into the opposite side of the highway, cars coming at 65 mph or more. then the car hit a street sign that changed the car trajectory and then came to a stop on the green area on the middle of the highway. the car ended all covered on grass, mud and impacted by the street sign that possibly prevented my car from invading the lanes on the opposite direction on the highway after the toyota corolla steered violently and uncontrollable seconds before. i have to say, this was an extreme situation that for who knows reason, all happened in a split second without warning and all the violent extreme movements happened without my car impacting other cars on the highway, but clearly i was very lucky. at the moment of the incident, a passenger was with me in the car and then can confirm has witness of the extreme car experience we endured. *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i have a toyota corolla 2009, i have reported to north town toyota in buffalo new york of my car having a steering problem. when driving the car it is constantly fighting your steering. it almost feels like where the rack meets the pinion, that they bounce and separate causing it to not steer properly. the toyota dealership says that toyota is not going to fix problems with the steering yet, of course it is our only vehicle, and we have no choice but to drive it. this is very frustrating. they have addressed the peddle recall, as well as repaired a failed left rear abs speed sensor, and bearing, but when i asked that they do both right and left at the same time they refused, now my vehicle is out of warranty, and will have to pay for it when it fails. i am not an uneducated person i have a mechanical degree, and have worked in several industrial plants dealing in industrial maintenance, it is standard practice, that when a bearing fails, and there are more than one in the same area, you replace them all at the same time, just like when one cv boot fails on the searing column they always replace them in pairs, as well as brake pads, drums and rotors.  I purchased my toyota corolla s 2009 in december 2008 brand new at the menlove dealership in bountiful, utah. from the very beginning i had issues with steering control when driving on high speeds (65-80 mph). it feels that i have to hold on to the wheel really tight otherwise my car is going to wonder into a different lane. or it seems that the wind is blowing my car away while there is no wind. my alignment was and is fine. i am very nervous to drive, especially when there are many other cars around. it does add up to extra stress. and i don't feel safe. i drove other cars and none of them had that issue or gave me the feeling that i am loosing control over my car. my husband has the same experience. when i addressed the issue initially right after the purchase, i was told that possibly i have to drive it for some time to break it in. it has been a year now, and the issue is still there. on february 27, 2010, i took my car back to the dealership to get the recall fixes done. i addressed the steering control issue, they took it for an extra day to test drive. when i got my car back, menlove representatives told me that the steering is sensitive but of course it is safe to drive unless toyota comes out and tells otherwise. i hope that something will be done with this issue. i am afraid to take my car on long trips because of the steering control. thank you for your consideration.  Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i purchased a 2009 toyota corolla (vin=[xxx]) in august 2008. at higher speeds, it seems to steer like you are driving beside a large tractor trailer rig (i.e.: feels like the car is being buffeted by wind). i talked to my brother in-law and he said he had a similar problem once with a small light weight car. so i called the dealer and they said this was a typical problem with the corolla and said i needed to purchase a spoiler. now i am a civil engineer and think that the engineers that designed the car would have designed it to run without a spoiler at legal driving speeds. i did keep the tire pressure at 35 psi, but lowered it to the recommended 30 psi. this helped, but the problem still occurs at speeds of 65 to 70 mph which i drive on the interstate with traffic. i have no idea how the car drives at 65 to 70 mph without traffic. i think that there is a defect with the steering. *tr

I bought a 2009 corolla in april of 2008. shortly after purchasing the vehicle i noticed the steering felt funny but i had never owned a toyota before and thought it may just be something i would have to get used to. but the problem just continues to worsen especially at highway speeds. i constantly find myself gripping the steering wheel so tight that my arms and hands start cramping up because you never know what direction the car is going to decide to take you. steering the car becomes very stressful. you can hold the wheel as straight as you possibly can and the car will weave all over the road. i feel very unsafe in this car and i am very concerned for my wife and daughter as this is her primary transportation. i know this problem is not related to tires or the vehicle being out of alignment because the problem has been there from the beginning and since i have replaced the tires and had the car realigned and nothing changed. i own a collision repair facility i'm not stupid like toyota would have us believe. also this is the third major safety concern with this particular vehicle first brakes then accelerator (of which my wife had her first encounter with about a week after we took the car to the dealer and had the recall work done guess it still isn't fixed) now you don't know whether you can keep the car in the lane. i took a chance on a toyota because they had always been reliable and the vehicles seemed to last and now i fully regret stepping foot on the lot and once this is resolved i never will again i can never trust a company again that would lie to me about safety issues. now there is no way possible to get rid of it because these problems have destroyed the value of the car. toyota needs to buy this car back and dissolve the contract that they are in breach of. i bought a car based on quality and safety and was given a death trap. my 1995 suburban is easier to keep on the road. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the vehicle pulled left and right. in order to steer straight, she would have to tilt the wheel to the right and when she stopped, the vehicle would move to the left or to the right. she steering wheel began pulling to the right and caused her to drive over a curb. she took the vehicle to the dealership four times and was told that she needed an alignment. they replaced the two front tires and told her that the alignment caused the failure to occur. the steering wheel has continued to malfunction since the dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the failure. she had not called the manufacturer to-date. the current mileage was 20,669. the failure mileage was approximately 13,000.

I have had trouble with my 2009 toyota corolla steering since it was new [ february-2009 ] i think the firestone tires contribute to the problem but not only cause. i feel it's related to electronic power steering control. not sure how to describe circumstance. it is mostly felt when you make turns and are accelerating into the turn the steering doesn't respond back and may cause you to go off the road. maybe because the steering wheel needs to be turned back a lot to get back straight onto the road. happens any time . i'm adjusting to this situation but don't like what may happen if it catches me off guard some day. *tr

I purchased a new 2009 toyota corolla le in march of 2009. my car wasn't recalled for floormats or a sticky gas pedal but was recalled for a vacuum booster hose recall. my car is a japanese unit and wasn't subject to those recalls. im writing to you because the electronic power steering in this car is dangerous and should be looked into. the steering is extremely sensitive to minor inputs, wanders, and doesn't seem stable. please investigate as this car isn't safe. *tr

I have a 2009 toyota corolla. i have complained numerous times about the steering pulling one way or the other to my local toyota dealer but they have always maintained it's fine. i finally looked up the problem on google and found other people are also having this problem. i recently drove the car to and from florida and my arms actually hurt from fighting the steering, and i'm a construction worker. the problem seems to be getting worse. *tr

I am still waiting for toyota to recall my car regarding the power steering or the problems with it. as many have indicated/complained, the power steering of my 2009 toyota corolla is so frustrating and nerve wracking. it's very unstable at high speed. it feels like there's always a high gush of wind pushing my car left and right. if safety is what toyota is all about, i think the drivers of these cars, i for one of them, don't feel safe at all. i'm always nervous thinking that my car would pull on either side at anytime. i hope that they still have a record of my complaint. brought my car to two dealership and both of them confirmed that nothing is wrong with the car, when in fact there is. i hope that whoever is investigating this issue try to drive my corolla so that they find out themselves the problem that we're having. the car is very unsafe. imagine someone who is a new driver driving this car? i think they'd have a nervous breakdown. &tr

I have a 2009 toyota corolla. when driving above 60 mph the power steering is causing the car to wander out of the lane even when i hold the steering wheel straight. i have taken my car into the toyota dealership three times since january 2009, however the problem still exist and has not improved. i called the toyota dealer 2/26/2010 and was told they could not do anything until toyota told them a solution to the problem. they told us they would fix the problem even after the warranty ran out at 36,000 miles. i have 14,000 miles on the car now, do i have to wait for an accident to happen? the car changes lanes on its own and it is hard to control it at speeds above 60 mph. *tr

I was somewhat relieved to see that there, in fact, is an issue with the steering on the 2009 corolla. i bought my first toyota in sept. 2008, which was a 2009 corolla. that winter, i was driving across the state during the holidays. i was on the interstate going 75 mph, the speed limit. with no explanation, all of a sudden i lost control of my car. i hadn't done anything to lose control and there were no weather issues. i found myself skidding across two to three lanes of interstate trying to get control back of my car.. i easily could have flipped many times through a ditch and god knows what else. thankfully there were no cars on either side of me when this happened. to this day it has haunted me on what happened that day as i have never been that close to what i consider a near death experience. i easily could have died that night and i realize that. i took my car in the next day to the dealer and asked them to look at it. they did and said they couldn't find anything. please do a recall on this issue. it is a serious issue as i experienced it myself. i just wanted to share my experience in case it had any bearing on whether a recall is made or not. i will close this by saying that i can't help but be extremely disappointed in toyota. i had never owned one and bought one because it is such a reliable brand. i'm possibly facing my third recall (first was brakes, second the accelerator and possibly a third with the steering) - all three major safety concerns. i will say that i do appreciate toyota's willingness to make things right. it is the correct and ethical thing to do. please hang in there and fix everything that needs to be fixed so we can all move forward safely. *tr

2009 toyota corolla le requires excessive concentration to steer at speeds over 60 mph on imperfect highways or in windy conditions. i noticed this immediately after purchase and had the car in to get aligned by brunswick toyota. the alignment helped only somewhat. i took the car in to have it tested in marysville last spring, however the track was in good condition and the runs over 50mph were short. i don't believe it was a realistic test. compared to my other cars (one being a 2004 dodge ram 1500 pick up which steers better) this one requires full attention and if changing radio stations on a highway with lots of heavy truck use could cause a less experienced driver to veer into another lane. *tr

2009 toyota corolla. when traveling over 50 miles per hour, the steering is loose or uncontrollable. the vehicle can stray into other lanes of traffic. this has occurred almost everyday since i take the freeway to get to my place of employment. it is my understanding from the dealership that the response is: there is nothing we can do. *tr

Power steering seems overly sensitive. constant minor corrections to steering wheel are required to keep the vehicle in a straight line. even with all the extra steering wheel corrections, i still end up weaving down the road. i have heard others say they feel as if the are losing control. my complaint is that i have to control too much. i have had six other toyota corollas none of which had the electric power steering. they are fine. i noticed this behavior as soon as i drove the car home from the dealer on the day of purchase in january, 2009. when i asked about this i was told by the dealer (metro toyota, cleveland, ohio) that what i am experiencing is normal for a car with electric power steering. i'm not so sure. *tr

My 2009 toyota corolla has issues at highway speed with its steering. it will be fine and then it will want to go side to side very quickly for a short while, then go back to driving normally. it is similar to what would happen if you were to move the steering wheel rapidly side to side, but just a few inches. it happens at speeds over 50mph and has done it up to 80mph. it does not always happen, but does so several times a week. i have an 80 mile round trip commute daily, and sometimes it happens several times in one direction. *tr

As a current owner of a 2009 toyota corolla i believe that the steering issue is something that needs to be looked at. while i have not had any serious problem, the car at highway speeds, on a windy day is very uncomfortable to drive. it seem that at highway speeds the feed back to the driver does not allow for good control when hit with a gust of wind. this car even on a good day needs to be driven with great care to keep it in its lane. i am sure this is not the last we will hear of problems with this. *tr

On february 11, 2010, when i was driving our new 2009 toyota corolla from wilmington to philly on i95 and my husband was sitting on the passenger side. we feel our vehicle was continuously vibrating. the car vibrate just like the earthquake. our speed is only 55 miles an hour. and there is no wind in that day. it is very hard to control and we were scared, so we slowly take the brake and stop the car to inspect, we did not find anything unusual. then we kept driving it on the i95, we felt the same vibration. regarding to the safety consideration, we left the highway and we are afraid of driving it on highway right now. i consulted with some people who have some knowledge on car, they told me it is some problem with the steer system. i am communicating with my dealers and trying to get the feedback from them. *tr

Power steering problems. car is hard to keep in straight line. power steering over corrects with the slightest movement right or left of the steering wheel. while traveling on i 40 in a one lane construction zone near winston salem n.c. on october 16th 2009, i turned the steering wheel to the right . i then had to correct by turning back to the left. when i turned left the steering over corrected causing me to strike a construction cone with my left mirror. the glass in the mirror broke and i replaced it at my expense. i have had problems keeping the car in a straight line while traveling between 40 - 60 miles per hour ever since the car was purchased. i travel thousands of miles every year driving several makes of vehicles. this vehicle is the only one i have had this problem with. after hearing of other people having the same problem, i believe this is either a design problem or an equipment failure and should be corrected by toyota in order to prevent accidents or deaths caused by this problem. *tr

My 2009 toyota corolla keeps pulling left - it is particularly obvious (and more difficult to handle)when driving 55mph+ on the highway. i went to my dealership, reported the problem and asked them to check on it last week. they said that there was no problem with the alignment of the car. however, they rotated my two front tires - which did not fix the problem. my car keeps pulling left when driving at high speeds (55 mph+) on the highway. this hasn't caused an accident yet, but it does make it difficult to drive the vehicle. *tr

I would like to add our 2009 toyota corolla to the list of cars with a steering problem. at low speeds it seems to work just fine. it is when traveling on the freeway that the car seems to have a mind of its own. it takes constant effort to keep the car in the lane and after lane changes or slight curves the car will often shoot further in the direction of the turn and has to be caught and pulled back. *tr

2009 toyota corolla s. special ordered and purchased in 2008. we returned the vehicle to the dealership quickly after purchase complaining about the straight-line driveablity of the car. the problem was more noticeable on the interstate. the car has to be constantly corrected left and right just to be kept straight on a straight stretch of road. my wife and i both are scared of this car. i just feel like i'm going to lose control of this car at a high rate of speed. it's worse when there's a cross wind on the interstate. it happens everytime we drive this car. we work on opposite shifts at the same place, in the next county. so she drives it back and forth the first half of the day and i do the same the second half of the day. it's almost all on the interstate. it's very stressful getting this car down the road. so, the dealership said they compared it to another corolla on their lot and they drove the same. they fixed nothing. gave no explanation as to why it would drive like it did. so we feel helpless and we have no other choice but to keep driving it and paying for it. my wife drives our kids in this corolla and it worries me everytime that she's going to crash it. i just don't know what to do about this since the dealership says that nothing is wrong with it. it's currently got a little over 21k miles on it and it still drives like it did when we bought it. *tr

I had talked with toyota multiple times regarding what sometimes felt like very loose, uncontrolled steering in my 2009 corolla xle, & was told each time that it was doing what it was supposed to do & i needed to get used to it. the steering was hypersensitive & when making easy turns, the wheels frequently turned as far as mechanically possible (could hear them hit the wheel well.) i eventually resigned myself to the steering & quit asking them. while driving on a 2 lane road, around a large curve, i found myself to close to an object on the right side of the road. i instinctively pulled the wheel to the left & immediately felt the car try to make a turn, then start to spin, when i tried to steer back to the right trying to correct, i felt no response or control. my car spun around 180 degrees, off the road, & rolled onto the drivers side & part of the roof. as far as interior safety, no air bags deployed but the passenger compartment held up well, & while my insurance co. had to total the car, i only suffered bumps & bruises. now i'm reading that i am not the only one with concerns related to the steering in this car & most of the complaints sound frighteningly familiar to my experiences with it. this accident was reported to the police, but no ticket was given or report filed. *tr

2009 corolla s with steering problems. i bought my 2009 corolla in 2008. i love the car but hated the steering. at first i thought it was the wind pushing the car around but realized it was not the wind. i had to always compensate for the wandering of the car and it was quite tiring on my arms. sometimes the steering wheel was turned and it was going straight, sometimes the steering wheel was straight and it was heading for the ditch. i parked it in the winter (probably would have had an accident with it if i had not). it was like driving on ice all the time. i reported it to the dealer. the mechanic took it out for a test drive and said the power steering rack was bad. they ordered one and replaced it (under warranty) along with the recall for dripping fluid on the brakes. *tr

This is a follow up to a previous complaint. i felt compelled to do so after reading other issues people were having with there toyota corollas (s). i purchased this car june 1st 2009. three weeks after purchase i noticed something was wrong with the paint. i took it to the dealers, the service dept manager looked at it and said it was due to the environment, the sales guy told me it was due to tree sap and the third time i took it the sales manager said it was from bird crap ( it's garaged most of the time). weeks later i was hit by a concrete truck, at first thought it was the trucks fault but not real sure now because of the difficult steering with this car. at the time of the accident there was no air bag deployment. i had the car repaired by a private shop, they couldn't understand why the airbag did not deploy. while my car was there they looked at the paint. i have a black car with large white spots and was told there was a problem with the clear coat and it would cost around 4,000 to fix it. i again went to the dealership and was told this time that's what happens when you buy a black car. i have filed a complaint with toyota and we all know where that has got me. i filed a complaint with the consumer complaint agency and toyota failed to respond. boy, for a reliable care the only thing i can rely on is poor quality and a death trap. i have a dodge and will drive it before this death trap. good luck trying to do a lane change and looking into the blind spots. i have almost hit cars on my right while attempting to do a lane change more times than i can count. *tr

I bought my 2009 toyota corolla in june. after having it for a week i questioned about the reason as to why the steering was so hard to handle in the rain and when the wind blew. i was told this was because of the type of tires i had on my car. this problem has become worse. yesterday i was driving and without out me steering the car it went on it's on to the right. this car takes two hands tightly holding onto steering wheel to drive. it is the scariest car i have ever driven. *tr

Steering the car at highway speeds (over 55 mph) is difficult. feels like something is trying to push the car out of the drive lane. this occurs all the time (i have a 3 hr round trip commute at highway speeds) and has since vehicle was purchased. have an appointment w/dealership, but in a phone conversation was told by service rep that it was my problem, not the car and that an appointment was not necessary. rep (forgot name) stated that putting sand bags in trunk would solve problem. i have replaced the tires and had the alignment checked but the situation has not changed. *tr

I was driving in the left lane on gsp (nj) at 65mph and all of a sudden the steering was not responding properly and the car was swinging between lanes. i immediately applied the brakes and slowed down and than moved into the right most lane. on that day it was little windy and i not sure if this is the cause but i have driven other cars and never faced this issue. *tr

Ongoing steering issue with 2009 toyota corolla purchased august 1, 2009, from eastern shore toyota as a new car. at interstate speeds (60 - 75 mph) car behaved as if in a strong wind...steering constantly needing correction. on january 6 i took the car for scheduled service and mentioned the problem to the service manager at the dealership. he knew of the problem and said, it's the tires. he said that at high speeds those tires, just run the roads. he said all i could do is wait until the tires wear out and change brands. i thought that was a lot to ask of a person who had recently paid virtually full price for a new car with a sense of driver-control noticeably diminished on the interstate. it may be important for you to know that i saved the work order and it makes note of my raising the steering issue. i called the car salesman and voiced my objection to just put up with it. he correctly pointed out that the tires were under goodyear's warranty, not toyota's. i took the corolla to the local goodyear dealer and they replaced all four tires on my car...mileage now up to near 5000. on my first drive test, problem at high speed was definitely improved. i called my saleperson and told him so. however, on a 300-mile round trip yesterday, the problem, although reduced at interstate speeds, was now very apparent at city driving speeds. i finished the trip resolved to write the dealership today which i will do as soon as i finish this. coincidentally, in this morning's paper is an article about the very problem...losing control of the steering. *tr

Eps steering is very hard to keep car in lane when traveling at highway speed. the best description i can give is that you have to make constant micro adjustments to keep it going straight. i do not feel a pull like a alignment issue but rather the car steering seems to want to drift left or right all the time. i have a 2007 rav4 with eps and it does not have the same issues. *tr

Thank you nhtsa ! hello, i have had extreme issues with the electric power steering on my 2009 corolla. there is definitely something wrong with the steering on mine and many other 2009 corolla's. the car is dangerous! the corolla swerves from left to right by its self and is very very scary at times. a good example would be to imagine your car being hit by extreme winds from the left and right simultaneously. i have nearly been involved in two accidents in this car. i have been to the avondale toyota dealer in arizona twice and they always told me the car was with in specs. the regional manager was informed of my problem yet he wouldn't even drive my car to see the problem. as if i was crazy or something, i have been a loyal customer to toyota for many years and this feels like a slap in the face. i am very educated in mechanics of automobiles and have driven many cars. this is not driver error! i also have to say, i have been more upset over the denial of this problem even more than the problem its self. if toyota would have listened to me and actually driven my car they probably could have saved them a ton of money on all the recalls now. good lesson to all business's. listen to your customers. i am very thankful this design flaw has gotten some media attention. maybe now they will actually look into this dangerous problem. *tr

My 2009 toyota corolla has steering issues, especially at highway speeds. this car is impossible to keep tracking straight without constant correction to the steering wheel. it wants to gently wander from side to side all the time. this poses a danger to anyone driving this car as well as others on the road. i was a toyota service technician for approximately 5 years and have never encountered such a problem with a properly functioning vehicle. *tr

I bought my 2009 toyota corolla late in 2008. i used to use it a lot on the expressway when going to champaign from chicago. i noticed that i had to fight a lot with the car as it felt really loose. it was never a comfortable trip as i had to always hold the wheel super tight or else the car may jump to another lane or into the ditch. i never really looked into it because it was my first car (i had an suv previous to it) and i just thought it was either just me or it was normal that it happened. but just today i saw an article on an investigation being done on the corolla's power steering and it described exactly what was happening with me and my car. i wanted to file a complaint to make sure that this is issue is not overlooked as many drivers as myself may not have realized that what was going on with the steering was a potential problem. to summarize, when i am at highway speeds, i feel as i have to fight with my car or else i may lose control of it and steer off the lane. this never happens in the city. i bought this car brand new and it was an issue from the start and therefore not an issue caused by wear on the tires or the such. please look into this. i never do long distance travel with my corolla due to that issue and if it can be fixed it will be a great relief. by the way, i put a date from around the time i bought the car because it did not give me an option to put any other type of answer, but this issue happens at all times when on a highway. thank you. *tr

I purchased a new 2009 toyota corolla in august of 2009. shortly after the purchase, i noticed that the vehicle drifts all over the road when traveling at highway speeds. it is very difficult to keep the vehicle in the lane that you are driving in and several times, i have come close to hitting the car that was in the lane next to me. i have taken the car to two different toyota dealers and have been told that every thing is normal and that there is nothing that they could do about my concerns. at this point, i have elected to park the vehicle and drive another vehicle as i do not feel safe driving the corolla. i recently heard that toyota was aware of the issue, however they were not sure what action they were going to take as there were only about 100 complaints filed on the issue. i performed a web search (google) on this topic and received over 2.5 millions results so this is not a small issue. i have also read many consumer review sites and this issue is mentioned in almost all reviews of the car. *tr

I bought my car back in august of 2009 and like many others i have had problems with keeping the car straight down the road at higher speeds. i have always said i should not have to hold both hands on the steering wheel in order to go down the road. it gets even worse when the wind is strong. i was told that because it is a small car it will do this. but i have never had a small car act this way. my car is very well maintained and i know it is not the tires nor the front end alignment. if you do not pay attention to this problem it would take nothing for you to cause an accident. *tr

The steering on my 2009 toyota corolla s feels loose at highway speeds. car feels like it drifts and needs constant correcting, always feels like you need a firm grip on the steering wheel with both hands. feels as though you are driving in windy conditions when it's calm. i do not have this probably at lower speeds. the problem occurred as soon as i purchased the car, april 2009, and i still experience it now. i have not attempted to correct the problem. i thought i was over sensitive to it since it was a new car i was not used to driving, but after seeing this website, i know it is the car, not me. *tr

I have a 2009 toyota corolla that is part of the gas pedal recall. i believe it may also have the steering issue as well. i have noticed that my steering is all over the place, it takes 2 hands to generally run smoothly. my husband complains about it more, i just love my car so i defended it but now that i have heard there may be a problem, i think it should be looked at alittle closer. my other issue is that when we called the dealership back in jaunary in regards to the gas pedal they very nicely informed us that they were repairing the more expensive vehicles first and then would schedule me an appointment. is that allowed? no offense, but my life is just as valuable as a camry, 4 runner, or other vehicle that they consider more expensive. i wanted a toyota corolla so bad and now i would do anything to get rid of it. *tr

Ever since i purchased my 2009 toyota corolla i have noticed steering difficult. i read blogs at the time and it seemed from what i read, that this was just a draw back of the car, so i let it go. i feel i need to report it now. the steering feels way to responsive to even the slightest hand movement of the wheel, or bump in the road. because the suspension on this model is so stiff, a bump in the road can cause my hand to move a tiny bit, resulting in the car moving much more than one would expect from little movement. the best way to sum up the problem is this; it is near impossible to just go straight, or hold the wheel still for a second. you have to constantly move slightly to the right or the left just to keep in the middle of your lane. going around curves smoothly is difficult as well. if it is windy this problem is 10 fold, and down right dangerous. i have already skidded off a snowy highway because the car so easily fish tailed while trying to correct my steering. luckily there was no damage, had there been vehicle in the lane next to mine, there would have been a horrific crash. in my 17 years of driving i have never fish tailed before. the alignment and tires have been checked and are fine. i had the brake recall done before the above mentioned incident. there doesn't feel to be an alignment issue. the car does not pull. the steering just seems far too sensitive, this combined with it's odd aerodynamic response, and bumpy ride make the steering feel very unsafe at times. even when it doesn't feel dangerous, it is tiring to have to constantly adjust the wheel right and left just to keep it in lane. i've never had a steering issue like this with any other car. there is also the overwhelming smell of sulfur in the passenger cabin several times a week, seems the catalytic converter doesn't handle it well. took it to a dealer for the sulfur issue and they said that's normal. makes me light headed at times, on top of just stinking up my new car. *tr

I own a 2009 toyota corolla. i have noticed many other complaints about the steering wandering. when we purchased this vehicle we were told about the new electric power steering. i have not liked the steering since day one but i thought that's just the way it was. when driving the car the vehicle does wander from left to right. you have to constantly move the steering wheel back and forth to keep the car going straight. *tr

The car oversteered and fishtailed yesterday when i was making a left turn. as a result, i almost crashed into another car in the lane to my right. i was going about 25 mph or less on dry, normal asphalt pavement, in normal weather conditions, after freeway driving in los angeles ca. in a separate incident, i found the steering to be dangerously vague when i was driving around 70 mph downhill on a steep and curvy mountain highway (i-15 in nevada, about 100 miles south of las vegas) in dark. the car was difficult to control, with the steering being extremely light and vague. i checked the wheel vs. tire movement of my car. it doesn't appear to be an excessive freeplay issue -- in fact there was no freeplay. it appears that they made the steering way too light and, on top of it, very nonlinear -- that is very slow steering response at the center. because of this the car doesn't immediately steer unless you turn the steering wheel about two inches. i'm sure toyota did this with safety in mind -- so that the car can't be suddenly steered -- but the end result was unsafe steering instead. it's unsafe because the steering is so vague that people can unintentionally turn the steering wheel without not immediately changing the car's direction but then in a second or two car may veer out of control. *tr

In my 2009 toyota corolla, the steering is finicky at speeds about 50 miles per hour. it constantly feels like it is being driven in windy conditions and wanders in the lane, requiring constant steering correction. i purchased the car in may 2008; in june i took it to my local dealer because i thought it had alignment problems. they said the 'light' steering feel was normal and no fix was prescribed. i then wrote a letter of complaint to toyota and received no response. since then, i have just had to get used to it and be conscience of it while behind the wheel. i've always thought that it was unsafe as any time i take my eyes off the road, the car veers to the left or right randomly. now i have been made aware that it might not be 'normal,' but a national concern. *tr

The steering on this vehicle is hazardous. i have explained it to the dealer on at least 2 previous occasions as being hyper-sensitive. while driving if you hit a bump in the road the slightest movement of the steering wheel is exaggerated and the car begins to veer left or right. trying to compensate the veering only exacerbates the problem. *tr

Steering problems---as soon as i pulled my new 2009 toyota corolla off the sales lots in december 2008 from dan cava toyota i could barely keep it on the road. the steering was going from left to right without me turning it. it was by far the most dangerous car i had ever driven and i used to be a goodyear dealer. i complained 3 different times about the problem but it was never fixed. they said it was the wind and buckhannon toyota just let the air out of the tires when i complained there. it was a continuous problem and if i made a sharp turn, at time the wheels would go as far in that direction that they could go and they car would go into a uncontrolled skid. mind u i was a goodyear dealer, i know about cars. then i noticed that as i put more miles on the car it was slowly getting better and by the time i had 3,000 miles on the car it had quit. if a lesser experienced driver had been driving i am sure it would have caused a crash. *tr

8-10 instances over 2 years with a 2009 corolla drifting while traveling on a straight highway, as if a strong wind was blowing when there was in fact no wind. the steering would become extremely light and unresponsive, prompting me to immediately slow down. it almost felt like hydroplaning, but again, there were no environmental conditions as such. nothing has been done to date to correct the failure. i didn't think much of it until hearing about the corolla power steering investigation. *tr

2009 toyota corolla steering is extremely light and requires constant correction to hold a straight line. even on a calm day it is like driving in a heavy wind. on a windy day speed must be reduced to maintain control. if you run the tires at recommended pressure it is even more difficult to maintain control. about 32 lbs is optimum but still work. this way since purchase. if you lit the steering drift go too far a sudden correction causes an oversteer. *tr

Safety problem with steering when driving at highway speeds on 2009 corolla when driving at highway speeds, the car tends to veer to one side or the other, especially when driving along a curve, apparently due to the vague, unresponsive electric power steering system. this causes a sense of loss of control and the need to hold on tightly to the steering wheel to keep the car from veering outside of the lane. this is considered to be a serious safety issue and i don't see how this can be remedied by any adjustment or repair except to recall the car itself and take it off of the road. this occurred the first day i drove the car on the highway. *tr

I was driving on to the off ramp and off the freeway decelerating from about 65 miles per hour. i felt as if a strong gust of wind pushed my car to one side at the same time this occurred the steering wheel jerked to the left pulling my hand with it. at this point i had no idea what had happened i tried to recorrect the wheel and instead it went wildly back to the right. this happened another time within a couple of seconds. the next thing i know the car spun around 180 degrees facing oncoming traffic of cars coming off the freeway at which point the car drifted, hit the curb and rolled into the embankment. the car was totaled. my passengers leg was also injured and we are lucky to be alive. until all this news came out about toyota i had thought that what had caused my accident was strong winds because honestly that is what it felt like when i was driving behind the wheel and on top of that i was traumatized so i never thought about the accident having anything to do with the cars mechanical failure. looking back i don't even believe the wind was even blowing that day that was the first time i drove that car on the freeway after purchasing the car. my sister also drove it once on the freeway and she also mentioned that the steering wheel felt hard to handle. shed mentioned that driving from san jose to san francisco she had to have a firm grip with two hands on the steering wheel because it felt strange. the accident was in 2008 and it was a 2009 corolla. because of the accident we weren't even able to have a chance to determine whether or not the steering wheel actually had a defect. *tr

While driving on the highway my 2009 toyota corolla sways back and forth in the lane, sometimes causing my vehicle to go into the left or right lane. for awhile i thought it was due to the wind or maybe the road being uneven but i have driven on different highways and it has occurred many times. the vehicle sways when i reach speeds of 40+. the wheel will be straight but the vehicle will still sway from side to side. i saw that other 2009 toyota corolla owners were experiencing the same issue and i realized it was something to do with the vehicle and not just surroundings such as the wind or the road. *tr

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla s sedan in the summer of 2008. after owning the vehicle for approximately 3-6 months, i detected instability in the steering of the vehicle when traveling at highway speeds down the i-95 corridor, south of the washington dc area. i reported this to close friends, but after discussion with the friend, attributed it to the new electric power steering and to a smaller wheelbase vehicle that i'm not accustomed to driving. after monitoring recent press reports that other consumers have brought to light regarding the same situation, i felt compelled to report our experience, which was well before the recent, myriad recalls issued by toyota. *tr

2009 corolla s steering problem--driving on freeway car wanders any attempts to correct the steering doesn't help i'm constantly trying to keep my corolla with in the lane. i'm more worried about the steering than the gas pedal. i traded in a 2006 corolla for this one, no problems with the 2006. i reported the problem to the dealer they said that the steering was designed to handle this way. i reported the steering with in a few weeks after i bought the car. i went on line and found out that this was a common problem with the corolla. over the year i found myself coming very close to getting into an accident on more than one occasion because of car drifting into the other lane. *tr

I bought toyota corolla 2009 a year ago. and after 2 weeks i bought i complained about the steering wheel by feeling the survey form and even i went to the dealer to check this for me. the steering wheel is very very bad.... when you drive you car more than 50 mile per hour.... it is very hard to keep the lane straight.... you have to grab the wheel really hard... you feel swinging left and right when you drive this car in a highway. starting from week 1. i am extremely disappointed with the performance of the steering wheel of this car. i was expecting to hear from toyota following my complaint.... but i didn't hear anything. i am still driving this car with less confidence and scared every single time i drive. i never felt driving a new car for a single day. seriously, these toyota corolla 2009 model needs to be checked for the steering wheel. since i have already bought it i can't to anything but i would love to have my complaints heard by toyota and fix the issue. the steering wheel is very bad. *tr

I own a 2009 toyota corolla, the vehicle drifts while traveling down the road in a straight line off center. toyota has done a wheel alignment and state that all is according to spec. i own a toytoa 4runner 2003 and it tracks straight and true on the same roadway. i drive a ford police interceptor at work and i also drives straight and turn on the same roadways. consumer reports magazine also reports in their test that the corolla 2009 was vague on center during their test. *tr

My 2009 toyota corolla s veers (as if hit by harsh wind) while driving 60+ mph on the highway. i was driving out of state on a highspeed highway when i noticed the problem. i had to slow down and hold onto the steering wheel with both hands to keep my car in my lane. i have only had the problem occur at high speeds so i have been driving slower since then. i found out yesterday that there may be another possible recall and that's when i decided to file a complaint. *tr

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla s model on march 23, 2008. since i have owned this vehicle i have noticed that it is very difficult to keep the car moving straight down the road. for some reason there is a lot of extra play in the steering wheel which forces the driver to continually move the steering wheel left and right to keep the car going straight. this is the 3rd corolla i have owned in my lifetime and i have never had an issue like this. it seems there may have been a faulty design plan used when toyota manufactured this new model vehicle. can you please tell me how i should address this issue and what my next steps might be? thank you! *tr

I own a 2009 toyota corolla. the car is about 9 months old. i noticed in january 2010 that the car is not steady at high speeds. on the highway, at about 60 mph, the car required constant maneuvering of the steering wheel to prevent it from drifting off a lane. to be more precise, even when i hold the steering steady, the car drifts and i have to bring the car back into the lane by adjusting the wheel slightly. it does not happen every time i drive, but has happened on two occasions so far. the drift is quite significant and something toyota cannot ignore. i hope toyota recognizes this problem asap. *tr

I own a 2009 toyota corolla and the problem is that the steering has to be constantly adjusted to keep it from wondering off center. this occurs at all speeds. it reminds me of driving a go-cart. the steering is extremely sensitive to any turning of the steering wheel. it responds more like driving with a joystick. the tires are properly inflated. the car is new with only 4,200 miles and has never been driven on rough roads. a toyota dealer service rep (naples, fl) said it is natural with small cars. i find it very difficult to drive without constantly watching the road and adjusting the steering. looking to the side such as reading a road sign could get me in a lot of trouble. this problem happens at all time and not on a particular day per below. *tr

Steering issue with 2009 toyota corolla, 25,050 miles. while traveling at 20mph in residential subdivision, vehicle veered left, steering unresponsive, spun 180 degrees and came to rest against the curb on the opposite side of the road. car in front and car to the rear passed through same area without incident. also, vehicle will drift abruptly at highway speeds, similar to effect of high crosswind or ice, with no movement of steering wheel and none of the body roll that usually accompanies a crosswind, requires high level of attentiveness to avoid crossing lane boundaries. this behavior is sporadic, but a 10-mile trip is enough distance for several occurrences. given the intermittent nature of this issue, i have not reported it to the dealership nor to toyota, so nothing has been done and no repairs have been attempted. *tr

I own a 2009 corolla since may 2008 and since the first day i bought my car, i have had this feeling that the steering on my corolla is super sensitive and that is a challenge to keep the car from veering to either side. i had the alignment checked but that did not help a lot. i always thought that maybe it is due to the fact that the 2009 corollas have an electric power steering versus the hydraulic power steering in the earlier models, and since i have never owned an electric power steering car in the past, i feel it different but now reading about the challenge that other 2009 corolla owners face when trying to keep it going straight, it looks like this is something bigger. it is nearly impossible to steer my 09 corolla with one hand (which was never an issue with my previous cars) and it is a challenge to prevent it from veering off the lane. i have to use a tight two handed grip to prevent the car from moving towards another... which happens within seconds and has scared me while driving, more than just a couple times. *tr

2009 corolla le......the vehicle would not steer correctly or maintain a straight course line. there is an engineering error in the 2009 corolla le. the rear stamped axle has no provision for rear wheel alignment. toyota claims the car at highway speeds with self align...this is not true. the only resolve for the steering issues on the 2009 corolla le is to modify the vehicle frame so that the stamped axle can be repositioned thereby bringing the rear wheels into alignment with the front wheels. i attempted to work with toyota corporate but was simply stonewalled. i had to have a private wheel and frame shop modify my new toyota to correct the steering issue. i have all the documentation including independent hunter specification sheets both from the dealership and 3rd party wheel and frame shops to verify the issue and also how the problem was solved. again, it is an engineering issue with grave potential of serious injury or death to which toyota will not acknowledge responsibility. *tr

Within a few weeks of purchasing my toyota corolla 2009, i noticed at both slow and fast speeds the car drifts to the right or left depending on the inertia of the car. the car does not stay in its lane -- i.e. the car does not drive in a straight line -- without full attention and steady pressure of both hands on the wheel to correct the drift. on highways (from 45mph and especially from 65mph) this problem is exaggerated -- i.e. small drifts or corrections can result in swerving and have greater potential for an accident. on one occasion i experienced drifting off the road and was able to correct in time. however, it struck me as such a danger that i stopped driving the car at higher speeds and avoid highways altogether wherever possible. the vehicle failure mileage was about 100 and current mileage is 8,500. this complaint updates a prior complaint filed february 4, 2010. *tr

While following my daughter on an interstate highway, after she got a 2009 toyota corolla, i noted that she had a tendency to drift to the side of the lane, then correct the steering repeatedly. i noted it to her thinking it was a problem with her driving skills. we then switched cars. (i have over 40 years driving experience.) i noted in the rear view mirror that she did not seem to have this problem with my car. i seemed to have no problem keeping the corolla in-lane at high speed. however, i was sensitized to the problem and was paying particular attention to where i was in the lane-something that i am not inordinately focused on normally when driving. i have recently discussed this with her and she now claims that she is having no problem keeping the toyota in-lane. i am reporting this after reading in the news about other people having this problem with this vehicle. *tr

I live in minnesota and during winter my 2009 toyota corolla produce a slipping on black ice sensation when passing under a bridge. this usually happens at highway speed and i'm not steering the car at all. it's like the car temporarily steer itself under the bridge without me moving the steering wheel. i have to keep the steering extra still to avoid a skid or shifting to another lane. my car also has poor antilock braking. the antilock frequency is way to high to be effective in low speed driving. it usually cause skid and long braking distance. *tr

I bought my 2009 toyota corolla in may 2008. from the very first day of ownership, the steering has been very sloppy, especially when traveling over 50 mph while on the highway. the steering seems as if it is over-sensitive and not fine-tuned, but there also could be a major problem with the steering components. when i brought this issue up to my local toyota dealership, they responded by telling me that the steering is supposed to be that way, since it was a new electronic power steering system, rather than a conventional power steering system like in previous models. if the steering is supposed to be that way, then why is it that i have such a hard time keeping my 2009 toyota corolla centered in the lane while driving down the highway. the vehicle wanders all over the road; and if i ever have a twitch or have to sneeze, the car would, most likely, be darting all over the highway because of the sloppy steering. in talking with many 2009 toyota corolla owners, this problem doesn't seem as if it is minor, as all owners that i talk to have similar problems. i have to keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel, looking straight ahead in order to keep my car in a semi-straight line while traveling down the highway. if i start looking around, scanning for potential hazards that may present themselves, i find that the car is wandering to the left or right without almost any steering input from myself. i would appreciate if the nhtsa and toyota would look into this potentially serious problem with the steering with the 2009 toyota corolla so that all owners of this vehicle would actually be able to have a stress-free drive while operating this vehicle. *tr

Okay enough is enough. i drove on interstate 75 today in florida speed limit is 70mph. i was going between 65-70 and i came inches to hitting an 18wheeler, thankfully in my attempt to control the steering i slightly veered to the right and of course the corolla veered a lot more to the right than i intended but at least there were no vehicles in that lane. god was with me. i am aware of my car's steering issue but i cannot drive at 30mph on a highway. keeping the steering straight is a task all on its own. i'm focusing on the car not veering into another lane and causing a fatal accident when i should be focusing on the road and driving in a normal state rather then a panicky one. i drive this highway everyday and i have been close many times to hitting other vehicles. i really need this to be investigated i am becoming more and more scared every day on my drive to work. driving in that state of mind is not safe. i'm considering my states lemon law petition program because its obvious that toyota either doesn't care or probably to busy fixing their other flaws. i'm through with toyota i just want them to take back their corolla i can care less about the payments i've made. they need to take their car void my loan because i rather walk and have my life than play russian rullet in that car. this is an everyday incident. and although not physically injured, i am developing a fear of driving with this car on the highway. this is crazy. i am only 25 i shouldn't be frightened of driving my 2009 corolla. tw*

My daughter lost control of her 2009 toyota corolla while traveling on a wet road at a low speed. she stated that the car pulled to the right and then spun around in 3 tight long circles before spinning out. had noticed what seemed like a looseness in the steering about 2 weeks before, but because i do not drive it on a regular basis was concerned if it was normal or not. i was concerned that the steering may have played a role in the accident and when researched online if any known issues, i was surprised to learn of a # of individual experiences and concerns similar to mine...all within a few months of the start of 2009. there were many postings regarding the steering in the toyota 2009 corolla. i was equally concerned to learn that there is a new power steering system in the 2009 model that is different than that of prior years. my daughter ended up going behind a guardrail and down an embankment and i feel obligated to file a complaint over my concern relating to the steering in the 2009 corolla. the postings include that toyota could not find a problem, but not being able to find the problem does not mean it doesn't exist. recent news events include that toyota also denied having a turn-over problem with another of their vehicles. when we purchased the vehicle it had approx. 10,000 miles on it and at the time of the accident it had 13,876. *tr

There is a steering problem with my 2009 toyota corolla with electronic power steering that i believe is extremely dangerous. i purchased the car new in 8/08. the straight line stability of this car is terrible at speeds greater than 50mph. this problem has continued since the car was new. it drifts and wanders at highway speeds as if it is being buffeted by high winds when no such condition exists. it requires deliberate and distracting focus to keep car in its lane. the car goes off course with the slightest movement of the steering wheel. it does not seem to have any neutral steering position, you have to constantly correct the steering to keep the car in lane.. if you take your eye off the road for a second the car will drift into another lane. certain road conditions, such as worn or troughed, (gullied?) pavement as well as increased windy conditions make the car almost impossible to drive. then you have to grip the steering wheel with both hands in an attempt to keep the vehicle traveling straight. according to toyota my car is in perfect shape. all steering tolerances are correct. the tire pressure has been monitored and maintained at 30lbs as is recommended by toyota since the car was new. *tr

2009 toyota corolla drifts and wanders at highway speeds. requires deliberate and distracting focus to keep car in its lane. alignment was checked and found to be correct. dealer indicated many owners have brought their cars in for this issue but there is nothing that can be done, that it is the design of the electric power steering. contacted toyota customer assistance center at 1-800-331-4331. case manager indicated that this was the design and that if a safety issue was found, a recall would be issued, but at this time there is nothing that can be done. believe there is a safety concern due to car's highway behavior and due to driver distraction; a car drifting around the road will be more likely to be in an accident, and a driver focused on keeping the car in its lane will be less focused on hazards that may develop in their path. *tr

Steering problem with my new toyota corolla. the car has about 6,000 miles on it. when driving on a straight road, the car goes off to the right and left. you must constantly keep adjusting the steering to keep the car in the lane. this also happens in a curve. this is a constant problem. this is dangerous and aggravating. i took the car to the toyota dealer and explained the problem. the technician rode with me and i showed him how the car goes off course. the technician drove the car and let go of the steering wheel. the car went off course. the technician said there wasn't anything wrong with the steering, but they would check the wheel alignment. (the wheel alignment did not correct the problem.) i don't know how he could say there wasn't a problem when the car wanted to go off the road. i complained to the dealer a number of times. they said there is nothing they could do about it. i asked them to check and or replace the electronic power steering unit. (eps) they would not even check it. i sent email and talked to a representative at toyota headquarters. i explained the problem. they said there isn't anything they can do about it. they will not even admit there is a problem. my concern is... if there is a problem with the electronic power steering (eps) that lets the car go off course, this could keep getting worse and i would loose control of the car. thank you for looking into this problem. *tr

We have taken in our corolla (purchased in january 09) to the dealer twice for the electronic power steering (eps) problem. the car is very difficult to drive on the highways. it refused to keep a straight line and we constantly have to over correct to keep a straight line on a flat road (driving on ice or in high winds comes to mind). we have noticed that even at slow speeds in parking lots that if the wheels are turned and the steering wheel moves back to center the wheels will not straighten up and you have the turn the wheel in the opposite direct to correct the wheels. the dealership has performed an alignment and they replace the steering rack. the issue has not gone away and they found that testing three other corollas on the lot all have the same eps problem and they are stumped. they have filed a tech case with toyota about the eps issue. i have also opened a complaint ticket with toyota tms in california 1-800-331-4331. they have been in contact with us and a toyota representative is going to inspect the car next week. if they are unable/unwilling to give us a resolution we are going to contact a nc lemon law lawyer. we just want the car to function correctly and free it is an accident waiting to happen. my wife is sick of driving it and has moved back to our older 2004 corolla. it makes me sick knowing how much we paid for this 2009 xle! *tr

The new 2009 toyota corolla has a steering problem. on a highway going faster than 60 mph, it is very difficult to keep the vehicle within the lane. if it deviates (which is normal) and a correction is made, the car over-reacts and the vehicle veers to the other side of the lane. another correction puts the vehicle back to the other side. so the vehicle moves side to side. straight line travel can be accomplished only with both hand firmly on the wheel and fixing you eyes on the road. the danger is when you are distracted, such as looking in the rear view mirror, adjusting the rear view mirror, changing a radio station, reaching for sun glassed, etc. then the car heads out of the lane as a result of a continued steering adjustment. the dealers and manufacturer claim that this is normal because of the new feature, electronic power steering. however, the 2010 corolla has another standard feature (which is optional for the 2009): electronic stability control. my 2009 does not have this feature and i was never told of its possible benefit to the steering. *tr

Purchased a new 2009 corolla s about 3 months ago from the local dealer in ardmore, ok. there is a steering problem with the new electronic power steering system on their models now. the driver has to make a constant adjustment in steering the auto to prevent it from constantly veering left or right as you drive on city streets or major highways. i met with the factory rep from toyota and he states that this problem is created by the new design of their steering system with 0% variance for error. a master toyota mechanic checked out the auto and attempted to make adjustment to correct, a case has been assigned by their service department stating that the steering is very oversensative. a case has also been filed with toyota customer service. my problem still exists i have a new corolla s parked in my garage with less than 400 miles on it due to the safety issue of driving this auto. *tr

My new 2009 corolla can not keep in a straight line when i am driving on highway. it wanders left and right so much that i have to control the steering wheel with great efforts, which makes the driving so tiresome. this problem is also reported by many other 2009 corolla owners. it is definitely a safety defect. it is absolutely dangerous for the driver and other drivers who are driving near the corolla. toyota should fix this horrible problem to save the drivers in no time! *tr

The car has very poor steering. when driving on a paved highway, interstate 95, the car feels as if it is out of alignment, pulling to the right. i've brought it to the purchasing dealership and they haven't found anything. i feel as if the car is not safe, as to always having to correct the steering issue and to make sure the car is driving straight. the car was purchased brand new march 9, 2009 and currently has 6200 miles on it. steering seems to be progressively worse. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving approximately 60 mph on normal road conditions, the contact experienced difficulty steering the vehicle. it required greater effort to turn the steering wheel. unexpectedly, the vehicle gradually changed direction and pulled to the right without assistance. whenever traveling 60 mph or greater, the failures would occur without warning. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they rotated the tires and performed a wheel alignment on 3 separate occasions. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer 3 times for identical failures, but there were no resolutions. the failure mileage was 25 and current mileage was 6,000. updated 07/08/09 *bf updated 07/08/09.*jb

The steering is hyper-sensitive at highway speeds (55 - 75 mph). this has the effect of making the car difficult to keep centered in it's lane. stated another way, the car always feels like it's being driven in high wind conditions. thus far it has not felt dangerous however it is very fatiguing on highway trips. the steering feels fine during in town driving (up to 50 mph). higher tire inflation paradoxically seems to slightly improve the car's highway steering behavior. my wife and i now remember noticing this behavior during the test drive; at that time we assumed that it was windy outside. most of the driving we do with this car is in town. *tr

This corolla s model always pulls to the left or right on highways. i have been having this issue since the day one. i have also noticed that when turning the corner the steering will not recover straight. i took it back to the dealer and first they haven't identify the issue. on my second visit i asked them to drive another corolla s which was ok and the tech guy said he now knows what the issue was. but unfortunately he doesn't know the fix and told me it has to come from toyota it self. driving in this vehicle has become very hard for my wife. i really hope toyota toyota is actually taking this issue seriously. *tr

I bought a 2009 toyota corolla back in april 2008 and was excited about upgrading from a 20-year old toyota camry, which i loved. ever since i've had the vehicle, i've also had the steering problems that many people have complained about on the web. around town the steering on the car is fine. but once you get on the freeway, it becomes difficult to steer since you're constantly trying to correct the issue. i have not filed a complaint directly with toyota nor have i spoken to the dealer because it appears that this issue is real and rather than deal with their condescending service managers, i'll simply wait for a recall from toyota. i can't say that i've felt unsafe on the road, but more irritated by the horrible steering. i may not purchase another toyota after all of this is said and done. *tr

I own a 2009 toyota corolla which has electric power steering. i've noticed that at higher speeds, in excess of 50 mph it is difficult to keep the car tracking down the road. it feels as if the wind is whipping it around all the time. the steering is too sensitive, much more so than older versions of the same vehicle which had traditional power steering. at times i feel that the vehicle is not safe to drive because of the constant need to correct its tracking. i think toyota should recall the vehicle and correct this steering problem. *tr

This did not cause an accident, but my 2009 toyota corolla suddenly pulled to the left when i was on the highway. i noticed from day one that the car is hard to keep straight at highway speeds, to a point to where it is very frustrating, but when it pulled suddenly it became frightening. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2009 toyota corolla. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle veers to the left and right, instead of in a straight line. when other vehicles pass or in windy conditions, the contact struggles to maintain control of the vehicle. the manufacturer stated that no one else was experiencing this failure; therefore, they would not assist. the failure mileage was 2,106.

I just purchased a 2009 toyota corolla le. i have previously owned a 1993 and a 2003 corolla. the steering and handling were great in the 1993 and 2003 models. this new electronic steering in the 2009 model is scary. at high speeds and in windy conditions the car goes all over the road. on highways with grooved pavement the car jerks from side to side requiring constant correction of the steering. toyota needs to be made to correct this problem. i have heard that new car dealers were increasing the tire pressure to 40 psi when the car was driven off of the lot to help cover up this problem. sure enough when i checked the pressure in the tires it was at 40 psi. thirty psi is the recommended pressure. i have driven many thousands of miles and this is the first car i have owned that i feel unsafe in at any time i have driven it. *tr

We bought a 2009 toyota corolla in oct of 2008. noticed the touchy steering, but was told that was normal by the toyota dealership. my daughter was driving it on a side street in huntington, wv when she hit a pot hole or a manhole traveling at about 15 to 20 mph. the steering locked up and she hit a parked car. it broke the abs wiring harness and caused $10,994.79 damage to car. we then found out that the tires were bald at 15,000 miles and the brakes were very thin. toyota had just service the car at 13,000 miles and did not tell me the tires or the brakes were bad. we do not know exactly what caused the steering to lock up. the repair shop could not tell us either due to the extensive damage. *tr

In my 2009 toyota corolla ce the steering wheel will not remain straight when driving and lightly holding the steering wheel, the electronic steering wants to pull the car left or right, and you must hold a tight grip on the wheel at any speed to prevent the car from crashing itself left or right. gave me a good scare when it seems to pull itself away from the road even with hands on the wheel. this is a ce model. *tr

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla, a car that just about killed us. this car wonders from one side of the road to the other. when you go past 55mph the car becomes uncontrollably. i took this car back to the car dealer and they said everything on the car was fine but still the problem continues. went back a second time and had customer service manager drive the car and she said the car's steering was out of control and something was definitely wrong with the car, also the service technician said there was a problem with the car. dealer said the could not do anything about the problem. i called toyota head quarters and they said the could not do anything about it. some one is going to be killed in these car's. i believe it has to do with the electronic steering. my advise follow your lemon law per state. don't give up.... *tr

I recently traded a 2007 corolla sport because of steering difficulties that i thought resulted from 2 tires simultaneously going flat on the interstate at 70 mph. these tires had been installed by a local toyota dealership. they had neglected to replace the valve stems. since that incident i felt that the steering was off. i took it to several dealerships and they all said the steering was fine. i decided to trade it for a 2009 toyota xle. i just bought it last thursday. the more i drive it, the more i notice that the steering is way off also! the car drifts in left/right directions with total unpredictability. it's like driving a roller skate or a skate board. it feels very dangerous. now i'm not sure what to do. i did not purchase the 2009 i drove originally. they sold me one of fthe truck that already had a sun roof in it, instead of installing one. i'm not sure what to do next. it's very scary! *tr

When the speed goes over 60-65 mph, the car tends to be pulled to different directions, wobbling and making me feel very unsafe to drive. even if i'm holding the steering wheel firmly and steadily, the car would be pulled to right side, then next moment to left side. *tr

I recently purchased a 2009 toyota corolla that has a defect in the design of the vehicles electric power steering system (eps). when driving at highway speeds (50mph or greater) the vehicle wanders all over the road. the straight line stability of this car is terrible! and i believe it presents a dangerous problem for 2009 toyota corolla owners. i have read other complaints about this problem on your web-site from other drivers and i think this issue needs to be addressed by toyota immediately. thank you for consideration in this matter. *tr

I purchased a 2009 toyota corolla le in early december 2008. much like my 1999 toyota corolla le, it cannot hold the road above 50 to 55 miles per hour. the vehicle still is under 2000 miles on it and we just came back from a 1500 mile trip to several states. here in nc, the speed limit is 70 mph on many highways. i'm in the car everyone else is passing, because my toyota corolla swerves to either the right or left requiring constant correction as if one was driving through a hurricane, even though it's not windy. when it is windy, it's dangerous to go over 45. my 34 year old son, a mechanical engineer, refuses to drive the car when he visits, due to the instability of either car's steering issues. *tr

I picked up my new 2009 toyota corolla on 3-5-2009. the more i drove it the more i noticed that the steering wandered. while trying to drive straight, the car goes left and right, almost like there is a strong cross-wind, but there isn't any wind. it is very difficult to drive on the interstate and stay between the white lines. you have to keep two hands on the wheel at all times and continually make steering corrections to avoid jumping into the other lanes or off the side of the road. i took it back to the dealer to have it checked and they said it worked just fine. i told him no, that it does not work just fine and insisted somebody else look at it. he had me go along with his head mechanic, and the mechanic said something was wrong, suggesting that the pinion gear had too much preload . they kept the car and replaced the steering. after i picked up the car, it seemed better at first, but then it returned to the same problem with the wandering after driving a few hundred miles. this is a very dangerous problem in my opinion and needs some serious followup. i'm taking the car back as soon as i can arrange for other transportation. help! *tr

I purchased a new 2009 toyota corolla on march 16, 2009. the eps steering causes the car not to run in a straight line. at highway speeds it pulls strongly to the right. to correct the steering causes the need for constant input to correct the steering as the car wanders off of a straight line constantly. the steering input is not precise and the car seems to steer off of a straight line. if not corrected, the car pulls right. due to this condition, i checked tire pressure. from the dealer, the front tires were well over the prescribed 30 pounds and the rear tires were well under. it appears that there was an attempt to compensate for the steering issues and mask the problem. with correct tire pressure, the problem is worsened. *tr

2009 toyota corolla le purchased 12/30/08. steering problems at high speeds - feels like i'm fighting to stay on the road at speeds of 55+. like you are fighting the wind at times and other times like the steering is just too loose. hard to get vehicle to drive straight down road. very dangerous and i don't feel safe driving it. took car to dealer to have steering checked and was told nothing is wrong with steering; however, i see others are complaining of same feeling. what's up with this car? *tr

I purchased my 2009 toyota corolla in october 2008 and returned to my dealer within two weeks with concerns about the steering at highway speeds -- 50-60 mph. my salesperson drove the car with me and told me that the steering was very sensitive, that i was used to driving a heavier rav4 with stability control but that nothing seemed amiss with this vehicle. over the course of the last four months, the issue continues and when the roads are slick or when the wind blows the problem increases tenfold. i live in a part of the country where wind is inevitable and ice/snow can be issues. i have contacted the dealer twice to try to trade the corolla in on a safer vehicle but since it is a new car, i cannot recover the depreciation to make the trade at this time. *tr

One major flaw: twitchy power steering it?s similar to others on the internet blogs ? after about 30 minutes it?s as if i am trying to balance my steering on a ball. the steering wants to move off center to the left or right. by steering into oncoming lane or traffic. i reminds me as a kid; turning my bike handle bars 180 degrees (backwards)and steering forward. you can do it but you must keep both hands and fight the steering. *tr

I have had my 2009 corolla for only a week and the first time i drove this car on the highway i noticed the car would sway to the left and to the right making it hard to keep the car straight. i thought maybe this steering issue was in my head, but after reading other peoples complaints i just feel mad. i have never driven a car with this type of problem and i have driven many cars. you literally take your eye off the road for a second and you are drifting into another lane. this isn't just an issue of annoyance, this is a safety issue and somebody could possibly get killed. if toyota doesn't start a recall on this issue, there top selling car's record of unsurpassed reliability could be tarnished! *tr

I ordered a newly-designed 2009 toyota corolla xle from a local dealership. it arrived in august, 2009. the dealership had no xle models on the lot, so a test drive was not possible. after the car arrived, i noticed that the car was pulling independently on the road to the left without just cause. i thought maybe i should have the dealership check the tires/steering/ or alignment on my next visit. as the weather became more rainy in the fall, i noticed that the car kept feeling as though it was not holding the road safely-- particularly at turnpike speed. i live relatively close to the elementary school where i teach, so i do not have to usually drive the turnpike, but when i did--the car 's steering or tires ?? felt out of control. then i noticed that the tire sensor came on and i saw that i had a flat tire when i was at school. the dealership came and towed the car in to the shop. they patched it. i thought maybe that would correct the problem, but the sensor kept coming on and going off. i went back to the dealership, explaining the car was pulling to the left and i thought maybe the steering or tires were not working. they worked on it again and i bought a new tire from the dealership and they balanced, aligned, etc. and i paid for it. then it snowed and i noticed that the slightest amount of snow increased the unsafe feeling of not having steering control. i have tires that are bridgestone/turanza tires that are rated m/s that came with the car plus the new tire they replaced is the same kind. please know that we have owned another toyota for 12 years and nothing like this happened. i am scared to drive this car. i feel unsafe. *tr

While driving on expressway and roads the vehicle will make a sudden surprise pull to the left or right randomly. one thing to note when turning any corner the steering wheel won't recover straight as if it forgot i turned. the car is less than a week old. notice the dangerous problem on my first trip on the interstate. i look it back for service the next day. for 2 days toyota service checked alignment and drove it. they find the steering wheel in tolerance. scotty said it's normal for this type of new electric steering. you must keep both hands on steering wheel or it will steer out of assign lane. after a 2nd trip in a week of owning this car decided to test drive a different 2009 toyota corolla and drove just fine. i only wished mine would have drove straight. *tr

I was driving straight on the mass pike in framingham, ma, and my car began to lose control. i neither hit anything nor did i lose control of the car. the brakes stopped working and i could not turn the steering wheel. this resulted in my car swerving out of control, hitting the barrier and flipping over. my car landed directly on top of 2 of the 6 air bags i have in my car, and not one airbag deployed after barrel rolling my car. my car is now totaled and i am undergoing physical therapy for severe whiplash to my back and neck. my insurance company has considered the accident a human error, yet i did nothing to cause the accident. my friend who has been a car mechanic for over 20 years feels that it was a mechanical flaw on the vehicle, and does not see how the accident could have been caused by me. i would like to talk to someone regarding a possible manufacturer's error on my new but totaled 09 toyota corolla. *tr
