Defect SummarySoutheast toyota distributors, llc (set) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 tacoma, 4runner, camry, camry hybrid, prius, and rav4; model year 2009-2010 avalon, fj cruiser, and highlander hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year corolla, sienna and tundra; model year 2009-2013 highlander and venza; model year 2012 prius v; and model year 2010-2012 sequoia. during modification by set to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest dvd systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
Consequence SummaryIf the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. this could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
Corrective SummarySoutheast toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. the recall is expected to begin during january 2013. owners may contact southeast toyota at 1-800-301-6859.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Experienced a car accident on 1/28/2013, the car has been estimated as totalled as per all state car insurance. my issue and concern is tht the air bags did not deploy, although the vehicle was hit in both the front and back into the guard rail on the highway. please investigate if this is a safety issue, or if the sensor did not pick up the crash.

When i purchased this vehicle, i immediately felt an awkwardness with the brakes. anytime i began to stop & the road was less than perfect, the brakes locked up & i seemed to slide to a stop. the feeling was almost like stopping on gravel or hydroplaning, just no control felt. when i complained about this, i was told that's how the new brakes are (i had previously owned an older vehicle) & the brake inspection found nothing. i have been in two mvas prior, once i was rear ended & the other time someone ran a stop sign & hit me. 10/12/11 i rear ended another vehicle & was also rear ended in the proocess. when i went to brake suddenly that day, the car slid into the vehicle in front of me. i am a very conscientious driver. i have always been told that when someone rear ends another vehicle, it is automatically their fault. i have since purchased another new vehicle, different manufacturer, and being told the toyota brakes were right, couldn't be further from the truth. 10/10/11 i had lab work performed & was diagnosed as being pregnant. this accident two days later, the airbags didn't deploy, either. the hood of the car came in through the windshield on me, the car has been deemed a total loss. there were two faulty toyota parts that failed me and my unborm child that day-the brakes and the airbags. i get to have surgery 10/28/11 to remove the now nonviable child from my womb. i equate this loss to the failures on toyota's part.

While driving at 35-40mph around a curve, i has pressed on the brake pedel to reduce speed an the vehicle failed to respond, but accelerated in speed while steering became inpossible to control, it was if the vehiicle was controlling it self. i had been drove into an through a ditch an out, hitting a mailbox, concrete lined driveway exiting the first ditch an entering another also hittng a street sign as well as a mile marker sign, my seat belt failed to lock which lead my head to repeatedly hit the top of vehicles windshield as well as the steering wheel. futhermore the airbag failed to deploy. i suffer from sever headaches, my vision in lt eye although inproved has greatly decreased, as well as memory.

Toyota 2010 corolla brake system failed. the emergency brake went on , while i was driving without me doing anything. the odometer stopped working, brake, check-engine, panic mode and airbag system lights went on. the failure has occurred twice already, first starting as a brake failure, then almost leading to the accident when everything failed at once. almost got into an accident and i couldn't accelerate in the car. i took the car to the dealership and they gave me run around, they still don't know how to fix it or what's wrong with it. this car is beyond unsafe to drive, luckily it didn't lead to an accident and injuries both to me and other drivers. *tr

I was making a routine turn and lost control of steering. it only happened the one time, police report said car rolled two or three times, total loss to car and injury to driver. i don't remember exactly the cause other than i lost control. can't say any of the recalls did or did not cause the accident. my primary complaint is that i paid for front and side airbags, and none deployed on a car that rolled two or three times. why am i paying for equipment that is not effective? if a car rolls over at minimum the side airbags should have deployed. i would also think this would trigger the other air bags. with all the recalls how would we know if any of these contributed to the crash? i understand the rollover rating applies to the stability of the car, but rating the safety in a rollover accident should also be rated. why don't air bags deploy automatically when car hits sides or the roof? we paid for safety and reliability of the toyota, but it appears that the extra money is wasted. *tr
