Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2008-2009 scion xd and my 2009-2010 corolla, and corolla matrix vehicles equipped with 1.8l engine and originally sold in or currently registered in the states of alaska, colorado, idaho, illinois, iowa, kansas, maine, michigan, minnesota, montana, nebraska, nevada, new hampshire, new york, north dakota, south dakota, vermont, wisconsin, and wyoming. when driving under certain unique conditions in extremely low ambient temperatures, the intake manifold suction port for the brake vacuum can become blocked due to the freezing of condensation resulting from positive crankcase ventilation.
Consequence SummaryThis could lead to an increase in vehicle stopping distance and a crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a newly designed intake air connector which will relocate the brake system vacuum port. this service will be performed free of charge. the recall began on september 21, 2009. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

When braking engine speeds up, having the impression of loss of control. the condition can be replicated if my foot is resting on the extreme right edge of the brake pad and then applying the pressure to the brakes. when braking, my shoe comes in contact with the accelerator depressing it slightly, speeding up the engine. the driver's immediate reaction is to apply more pressure to the brakes, exacerbating the problem. the problem is easily solved by increasing the height difference between the brake pedal and the accelerator simply by changing the thickness of the brake pedal pad. i have tested my toyota avalon 1998 for this condition and find that there is no similar problem with that vehicle.

Any time you go over any bump or hit any pothole, the brakes become very spongy feeling. when you push the breaks, they feel very bumpy (almost like there are rocks in between the drum and the pads and it makes a grinding noise. sometimes it even acts like it doesn't want to stop at all. as soon as you left off of them and reapply them, it is fine. it only happens if you go over something that is bumpy that causes any kind of jolt to the car. we took it to the dealer but they could not duplicate the problem. i am about to take it back again because it is still doing it. *tr

The problem is with braking system or brakes in toyota corolla 2010 le. i bought the car in december 2010. when the brake pedal is pushed, the vehicle does not slow down or stop. it requires pushing the brake pedal further down to slow down the car or bring it to complete stop. it happens at all speeds. abs is available in the car and is engaged. it ran 1100 mile only. i got it checked with the dealer and they told that there is nothing wrong with the braking system and that is how the braking system was designed in new toyota cars ( requires pushing down the brake pedal further down and i can't believe this). i still feel that there is some issue with the braking system. i checked the recall list in http://www.toyota.com/recall/ and my vehicle vin is not listed. i searched on the internet and found similar problem with toyota corolla 2010 model reported by many customers. the braking system is power-assisted ventilated 10.7-inch front disc brakes; 9-inch rear drum brakes with anti-lock brake system (abs), electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist (ba) . i am scared to drive this car.

Our japanese built 2010 corolla has a dead spot at the top of the brake pedal travel. at all speeds, when first depressing the pedal, very little if any braking action occurs with the vehicle. only after significant pressure has been applied to the pedal will the vehicle slow. this is actually more dangerous during low speed driving. the car has been to the dealer 3 times for this. there have been several adjustments made, and the brake system has been flushed with new fluid. it is still an issue. they have acknowledged that this is a characteristic of the japanese built cars. i have test driven 2 canadian built 2010 corollas, and the braking function is much better. the braking components are not transferable between the 2 cars. i maintain that this is a design flaw of the japanese built corollas.

2010 toyota corolla le has brake problem on bumpy roads. the brake seems to have hit something when the car bumps due to road conditions, and affects the effectiveness of braking. a friend who has the exact model also has the same problem. have complained to toyota dealership and was looked at, but saying everything was normal; however, the problem exists.

I was going to work when my brakes stopped working, steering wheel locked, and car accelerated straight into a fence. both my mother and i were injured. i got a toyota specialist to look at the car, it took them three and a half weeks after the accident to send that specialist to look at the car. he then said the car was safe to drive. after i got my car back from the body shop i took the car to the toyota dealership where i got it to get the brakes fixed and the accelerator pedal fixed. i have gone twice already and my brakes still aint fixed and giving me problem. *tr

While my husband was driving my 2010 toyota corolla (purchased on 9/10/09) on miramar, pkwy in miramar, florida, at 45 miles per hour a truck cut him off. when he hit the brakes to stop, the abs locking system skipped and never fully stopped? had the truck not sped up to help him avoid hitting him, he could have been seriously hurt or even killed. i have taken the car to the dealership for a scratching sound (abs) since 2 weeks of purchase (500 miles). on the first trip back to the dealership on 9/25/09, after 5 days and an hour and 1/2 driving with one of the mechanics, i was told that there was nothing they could do about the anti locking system, that is just the way they are. it has since been at the dealership 5 different times since date of purchase for a total of 15 days that i have counted for the same scratching noise and multiple other things, such as the steering, the tires rattling and balancing issues. when i called the dealership today (3/11/10) i was told by the service manager that my husband should bring in the car to try and duplicate the abs braking system not working. does he have to duplicate almost getting into a fatal accident in order for toyota to fix the braking problem? i think not. i was then told that they can give me a prius as a loaner. wow!!!! i traded in a 2002 bmw x5 for the reliable safe corolla. what a huge mistake. *tr

Toyota 2010 corolla brake system failed. the emergency brake went on , while i was driving without me doing anything. the odometer stopped working, brake, check-engine, panic mode and airbag system lights went on. the failure has occurred twice already, first starting as a brake failure, then almost leading to the accident when everything failed at once. almost got into an accident and i couldn't accelerate in the car. i took the car to the dealership and they gave me run around, they still don't know how to fix it or what's wrong with it. this car is beyond unsafe to drive, luckily it didn't lead to an accident and injuries both to me and other drivers. *tr

While driving a 2010 toyota corolla le the steering wheel unexpectedly jerked away from my control. in addition, the power steering and braking system is making strange sounds, such as hissing, pings and cracks. i took the car to toyota dealership and mechanic stated it is probably the electrical system. he also stated that toyota will probably recall car due to complaints with powersteering. due to the above issues and recent recalls on my car, my wife and i don't feel safe and secure in car. we are scared of dying like other toyota owners have in the past. we would like a full refund of $17, 209.97 from toyota motor sales usa. *tr

Toyota corolla s 2010 [xxx] with extra stabilizer bar kit, purchased 11-30-09 with delivery in 12/09. 1) approximately 1 month after purchase ,the car starting to veer sharply right then left when driving on the highway, it was/is difficult to control requiring a tight grip on the wheel. it feels like strong winds are moving the car but winds are absent and road conditions are normal. this event comes and goes unexpectedly, generally lasts the duration of my commute once started, sometimes occurs with the tire pressure gauge but not always, sometimes occurs after rapid braking. it does not feel like an alignment or balance problem, the car darts from one end of the lane, to the median of the lane on its own. on this date 2-24-10 my local dealership filled the tires, and made a slight change to the left alignment they could not duplicate the problem and stated this could be a matter of personal preferences regarding how i felt the car drove when this occurred. the toyota manager also told me today that they understand there could be a problem but they have no direction on how to repair it. when asked then if he could guarantee my safety and that this would not occur again he stated no, but there was nothing for him to do. no injuries to date. i do not feel toyota is making reasonable efforts to quickly eliminate this problem, acknowledge a problem, and do not wish to resolve this with statements regarding my personal preference for the drive, and since this in their opinion is not reproducible for them it is not a viable problem for them to repair. 2) on approximately 2-11-10 i had to use my brakes in an emergency situation in which my brakes were temporally non-response. i had to downshift the gears, remove my foot totally from the gas pedal ,and maneuvered the car away from the other stopped car. no abs was felt, the brake pedal was depressed fully, this occurred at hwy speeds. no acknowledgement of problem or remedy proposed by toy currently. *tr

At low speeds, especially on uneven or slick payment, the brakes and/or anti-lock brakes fail and the car will not stop. this usually lasts only a second or two. i purchased the car this october and noticed the issue soon after. it will happen a few times a week. i have returned it to the dealer twice for inspection, and they insist that there is no issue. i have had the accelerator pedal fixed for the recent recall. tonight, the brakes failed again for several seconds this time and i came very close to crashing into the vehicle in front of me. i was going 25-30 mph on wet pavement and was unable to stop the car when i applied the brake. *tr

Purchased a new 2010 corolla 4-door sedan s; immediately a problem with the brakes and steering was noticed upon first long drive. when depressed the brakes would go all the way to the floor. steering the car in a straight line down the freeway was almost impossible without constant corrections, i call it nervous steering, which after more than 50 miles because very stressful and tiring. purchase date 8-22-09. the vehicle was returned to the nearest toyota dealership located in victorville, california early sept 09. the brakes were examined and after certain corrections the brake pedal is better but not perfect. as for the steering..the technician says it's within normal parameters...what every that means. there is definitely a defect with the steering system; after reviewing the vehicle brochure regarding the steering system it reads electric power steering (eps) helps gives corolla steering response that's effortlessly accurate however nothing could more from the truth. it's been my experience after 7000 miles on the odometer...that when steering the car down the highway...the car will literally leave the lane your driving in which requires steering correction to keep it in the driving lane you're traveling. the brochure further reads that eps also eliminates hydraulic-assist components that can reduce fuel economy however i would say at what cost...if this new system renders the steering process a very nervous and tiring experience for the driver. a fatigued driver is an unsafe driver...i credit the fault with this new system eps as a potential disaster waiting to happen. it's my assessment after owning this vehicle now 6 months...that toyota needs to revisit this eps system and consider returning to the former hydraulic-assist components...it may more costly for them to build...but at least it worked. i bought this car because it had a reputation for safety and reliability however it's been the absolute worst purchase ever imagined. *tr

I have a 2010 corolla it constantly sways while driving at freeway speeds. sometimes i need to hold onto the steering wheel with both hands to keep it from going into another lane. i switched from driving a small vw beetle and was familiar with strong winds causing these problems but when i looked out the window there was no wind all the trees were still and no flags were waving. there has been a couple of times when i really felt the car was going to swerve out of control if i didn't immediately slow down. i also feel a metal grinding sensation with my brakes when i slow down over uneven pavement or go over a speed bump. this doesn't happen every time but in the past 2 months that i've had the car it occurred 6 times. i told the toyota dealership about these problems and they said it couldn't be duplicated and that there was nothing wrong with the car. which is completely ridiculous there hasn't been a time that i've driven on the freeway and not felt this swaying. they didn't even try to find a problem. they didn't do a thing to help me. than i heard of other corolla owners having the same problems. so i know it's not just me, there is a problem with my car and they need to recognize they made another mistake. *tr

When i was driving over a pothole or uneven ground less than 2 weeks after buying a new 2010 toyota corolla the brakes would grind and stopping would not be immediate. i took it back to the dealer who could not find anything wrong. i was told that new brakes often make noises. i explained that this was far from a normal noise. still, they assured me the car was safe, which i do not believe. i have had the car for a little less than 5 months and the brakes continue to grind over uneven ground. it will continue to grind until i release my foot from the brake, even if i am no longer on uneven ground. the car will slow over the uneven ground, but will not stop as expected, especially given that this is a new vehicle. also, yesterday morning i started hearing a tick sound coming from the brake pedal. it happens mostly in stop-and-go traffic. *tr

Since i bought it in october my 2010 toyota corolla base model has been extremely difficult to keep on the road i go over fifty and it feels like a big wind in constantly trying to push me off the road, i pay alot of money for this car and i don't trust it at all, when i stop or attempt to it makes a loud almost abs type sound very often and the brakes are extremely touchy and i feel this car is just a unsafe device what's next these cars are junk and poorly made. *tr

I have toyota corolla 2010, bought in august 2009. i had a brake problem with this car existed from the beginning. my problem with brake was first like a suspicious case and initially unbelievable for me.that's why i was doubt at first! i never believed 2010 corolla (i am owner) could have this problem. so i put off with that for a while. however, i realized the fact after traveling to california to visit my sister and i rented a car (volkswagen) over there. when i was driving the car, i found out how sharp the brake of the car was. at that time i felt the difference between sharp and properly-working brake and failed brake. other unusual experience with this corolla is that when i was driving the car in uneven roads the brake was going down completely with generation of such odd sounds like cracking of two pieces together! therefore i realized something really wrong with the brake. the brake being weak and not working properly. i called toyota dealer and told them the problem. also, in tri-monthly schedules for checking the car, i told them i do not like the brake, it is not good, not sharp, slow to action, but they told me we checked everything and all is fine! nothing done to fix the brake failure. unfortunately there are no any records of these conversations to the best of my knowledge, just i have a receipt that shows i brought the car for checking and they checked it. after that, i continue to driving, but once again, i realized the problem still exists. my next appointment for bringing the car for checking was february 7th on sunday. i was going to tell them i can not stand with this problem and i am concern about this, but unfortunately i got an accident on feb 2th. i was in slow line, my speed was slow (not more than 25m/h), however, when the car ahead of me stopped, i could not stopped correspondingly due to pre-existing brake failure. i hit the rear of the car. fortunately the police officers mentioned the issue of brake failure in their report. *tr

 1) events leading up to failure: i purchased a new 2010 toyota corolla on jan 1st 2010. i drove the car for 1 approximately 1 month before experiencing problems with the brake/acceleration. on jan 30, 2010 i noticed that the car would sometimes accelerate initially before braking when i hit the brake. on feb 2, 2010 i was involved in a collision on interstate 5 just after the la jolla village dr entrance. traffic was heavy, moving at an average speed of 20mph. when the car in front of me stopped, i hit the brake and my car accelerated into the back of the car in front of me. the car is currently undrivable and in the repair shop. *tr

Failure of brakes when going over bumps in the road. this is an ongoing problem that has happened quite frequently. i live on a dirt road which is wash-board bumpy. i also experience the same problem pulling into my parking spot at work which is bumpy. the brakes fail and the car makes a noise when going over the bumps. after the bumps, it corrects itself. no cars i have driven over the same conditions has exhibited this problem. i heard about the prius problem and that was the exact problem i had experienced. i am not sure how long it has happened, or how many miles i had on the car when i noticed it the first time. all i know is that it is still happening. *tr

I have made complaints do the dealership during multiple 5000 mile check ups on my brake grinding. when stopping on uneven surfaces or wet surface my brakes will periodically make a grinding noise which i can feel a vibration up through the pedal that shakes my leg. passengers can feel and hear these incidence as well. however, the dealership cannot duplicate this problem when the vehicle is being serviced and therefore they see no problem. on today's visit i have requested a brake system check which i was informed that the only thing they could find was the abs when pressing brakes hard. however this incident happens to me when i am coming to a slow stop not when drastically pressing the brakes. i was not satisfied with this and there was nothing more they could say but this is what it is and there's nothing they do about it.

I was driving at about 35 mph on a road that has a speed limit of 45 mph. i went to stop for a line of traffic when i pushed my brake pedal the brake went to the floor. it didn't even slow me down. i hit the suv in front of me then my car (with my foot still on the brake) accelerated forward and hit the suv again and again before coming to a complete stop. i have had my car into the dealership 3 prior occassions to get the same condition fixed. i bought my car from said dealership, brand new, a little over a year ago.

Purchased the car jan. 2011, within the first 2 weeks, i had the first experience with vibration in the brake pedal when applying on uneven surface. in addition to the vibration there is a hesitation in braking. this problem has happened multiple times, mostly on uneven surfaces. last week i had to stop suddenly for a deer and i really noticed how long it took to stop the vehicle. in addition, the noise (almost liking grinding) was very loud and the pedal vibrated. i have already taken the car back to the dealership and they assured me the brakes were fine. i have just made my second appointment. how do i ensure they fix this to proper safety standards?

When i purchased this vehicle, i immediately felt an awkwardness with the brakes. anytime i began to stop & the road was less than perfect, the brakes locked up & i seemed to slide to a stop. the feeling was almost like stopping on gravel or hydroplaning, just no control felt. when i complained about this, i was told that's how the new brakes are (i had previously owned an older vehicle) & the brake inspection found nothing. i have been in two mvas prior, once i was rear ended & the other time someone ran a stop sign & hit me. 10/12/11 i rear ended another vehicle & was also rear ended in the proocess. when i went to brake suddenly that day, the car slid into the vehicle in front of me. i am a very conscientious driver. i have always been told that when someone rear ends another vehicle, it is automatically their fault. i have since purchased another new vehicle, different manufacturer, and being told the toyota brakes were right, couldn't be further from the truth. 10/10/11 i had lab work performed & was diagnosed as being pregnant. this accident two days later, the airbags didn't deploy, either. the hood of the car came in through the windshield on me, the car has been deemed a total loss. there were two faulty toyota parts that failed me and my unborm child that day-the brakes and the airbags. i get to have surgery 10/28/11 to remove the now nonviable child from my womb. i equate this loss to the failures on toyota's part.

At approxamately 0600 on the above date i experienced a violent and near uncontrolable momentary disrupture of the abs/esc systems of my 2010 toyota corolla. vehicle shook violently, steering locked and abs and esc control lights on dash lit up while i was making the trasition from ih37 south to ih35 south in san antonio, tx. i was able to regain control by letting off of the brakes and throttle thus coasting through the left hand turn and bearly missing the retaining wall. this is not the first time this has happened, the first was only days after purchase of car. local dealer maintenance personnel stated we can't find anything wrong with the car. during the warrenty period the problem has been brought to the attention of mccollums toyota five other times all with the same we can't find anything wrong reply. conplaints of soft brake pedal brought a simular that's normal retort each time the vehicle was in for service. after the warrenty expired, front rotors and pads were replaced because they were found to have worn/groved approxamately 1/8 deep per side (not reported by dealer), not from metal to metal contact but just wear from pads friction material. pads still had 1/2 of fricion material on each. replacement of rotors and pads from auto zone made things better until now. request abs/esc software be checked on all 2008 to 2012 corolla/sion tc models along with check of materials used in pads and the rotors. oem rotors taken off car will be available until 15 jan 2012. 36,000 miles on a set of rotors and pads are a little extreme when i have over 125,000 on my gm's rotors and 165,000 on my ford's rotors with pads needing replacement around 45 to 55 k.

I own a 2010 toyota corolla with 10,000 miles on it. i bought the car new from a toyota dealership in october 2009. immediately after buying the car, i started noticing an abnormal tingling when hitting the brake pedal coupled with a loud grinding sound coming from the brakes immediately after i hit a little pothole at my condo. it feels and sounds as if i were doing something wrong by pressing the brake pedal. i took the car to the toyota dealership and they told me that was the abs being activated and that it happens when i brake after hitting a pothole or a bump or on a rough terrain, and that the grinding sound and tingling brake pedal are normal. it does not feel or sound normal at all and the tingling pedal can make a driver avoid hitting the brake pedal because it feels and sounds like doing something wrong, which may lead to a crash.

I have a 2010 corolla with brake issues. whenever i go over a pothole or other bump at low speeds (under 25mph), the car makes a grinding 'metal on metal' noise. it feels kind of like tingling under your foot... similar to a pulse. the car 'jumps forward' a small bit before it slows down to a stop. i find the 'jumping' issue very unsettling. it is like the car accelerates slightly even though you are using the brakes and trying to slow. the major issue is that the car does not stop--the brake pedal feels disengaged while it grinds and pulses. i have had my car serviced and they tell me it is the abs and there is no problem. but obviously there is a problem and other people are having this issue as well. i have driven the 2005 corolla model, as well as other cars with abs brakes, and never encountered brake issues like this. i feel very unsafe in my 2010 corolla and honestly, may try to trade it in even though i've only had it a year and would be losing a lot of money.

I have a toyota corolla 2010,i had it since june 2010, . i went through a major car accident on hw 1 ca @ 8:45 am on tuesday which was a sunny, clear , not foggy nor rainy day (weather condition was perfect),i was driving on 63 mph (normal speed is 65) on the fast left lane and suddenly i felt that the left front tire is veering the car into a different direction acting as if it below up (but it didn't) and my car is veering to the left , my steering wheel is locked and is not responding at all when trying to change the car directionto the right. there was no way to drive the car in a straight line. the steering wheel failed completely to respond to any attempt to turn it to the right in an attempt to gain control over the car and attempting to drive it in straigt line. brakes as well were not responding. all attempts to stop the car or turn it to the rigt to avoid bumping the rails and keep it straight in the lane failed. i completely lost control over the car & it started fishtailing in the front. the car didn't stop until it bumped into the guarding rail, at this moment the car just stoped and it took the car more than 20 feed to autonmously stop by it self. i failed to stop it.at this moment the car corrected its direction &went in straight line dirsection scrubing against the rail completely damaging the entire left side of the car before it stall. then all the dash board lights and car sounds went on and the car stalled. the car was not in a drivable condition so i had to tow it away. i have a witness who described my accident saying that my car kept swirving to the left & was ambagiously uncontrolled, he was the one that took care of me after the car bumped the rail. this accident is a life threatening accident not only for me but also for others on the hw. i was lucky it happened on my way home after i droped off my son to school ,the two car seats i had in the car were damaged, the car damage was estimated by $10,000. i suffer from a severe pain

When applying the brake pedal, sitting stopped in traffic, the brake pedal seems to fade away intermittantly. you only loose about 1-2 of pedal height, but the car will start to roll foreward if you do not notice it and apply more pedal pressre to stop the car. i am ase certified in brakes and it has a bad master cylinder. toyota states the this is a normal condition for this vehicle and refuses to warranty this issue. this vehicle has 4800 miles on it.

I just received a recall notice from toyota concerning a 19 state recall of 'ssc 90h - certain 2009-2010 corolla and corolla matrix brake system vacuum port special service campaign. this notice advises (under what is the condition? if the vehicle is operated under extremely low temperatures, there is a possibility that condensed moisture from a positive crankcase ventilation (pvc) port may seep into the brake system vacuum port (port) and feeze. the port is located inside the intake manifold and provides vacuum assist for the brakes. should this condition continue, ice may slowly accumulate at the port and in the worst case, ultimately plug the port. as a result, power assist to the brakes would gradually decrease (eventually to zero), and the increased pedal pressure required could lead to greater vehicle stopping distances. what should you do? if you believe that there is a possibility for your vehicle to be operated in the 19 specified states or in the conditions descrivbed above, please contact any authorized toyota dealer and .... this description of the problem is very subjective (possibility of condensed moisture..., ice may slowly accumulate...if you believe there is a possiblity for your vehicle to be operated... . i have already operated the vehicle in nevada (one of the 19 states listed). if this is really a safety concern i would think that all vehicles should be either a) fixed with the redesigned air intake connector or b) provide the vehicle with a safety warning sticker (placed prominently on the steering wheel?) that advises the driver that this vehicle has not been fitted with the redesigned air intake connector and that vacuum brake failure may occur whenever the outside temperature is below x degrees f (y degrees c) for periods greater than i hours. without specifics i don't know if i should receive this new part, and if i elect not to, how do i pass on the possible extended low temperature impact to future owner(s)?

I own a 2009 toyota corolla with 19000 miles. i am the original owner. i have taken the car in twice for a problem with the brakes. i have owned many cars but none have ever felt so unresponsive when you hit the brakes, especially in the event of a fast stop.the dealers tell me this is normal for vacuum asisted brakes. a brake pedal that goes almost to the floor when stopping and requires dangerous distances to fully stop is not normal, and if toyota has designed the system to function like this they have a bad design for a major vehicle saftey function. the braking system in the 2009 toyota corolla may be a dangerous design flaw. you may need to evaluate this function of the toyota.

Approximately one week ago, my 2010 corolla surged forward approximately 6-8 feet after i placed in park in my work parking lot. the tachometer went to above 2000 rpms, and the cars speed went over 20 mph before i was able to jam on the emergency brake. my foot was not on the brake or the gas pedal. i almost hit a tree. my head was thrust backwards. three hours later the paramedics had to come to my office and rush me to the hospital as i had a tia as a result. this is the third acceleration incident with my vehicle since february 12th. the dealership has even had a specialist look at my car, and they said nothing is wrong with it. i brought the car back to the dealership today because of the above incident. the general service manager said to me quote unquote we can find nothing wrong with your vehicle, and can not verify your complaint. you have brought the car to us four times for this same acceleration problem and there is nothing wrong with your car. we have not charged you any of these times. if you bring it to us again for the same problem, we are going to have to bill you for our time. they also charged me for the rental car today. he also stated that the media is blowing this way out of proportion, and that there is nothing wrong with any of the toyota vehicles. he said the problem is one of two things. i asked him what those two things were. he stated that they are the drivers are bad drivers and the other is it is fraud. so i said are you implying i am a lier or a bad driver and he refused to answer. i then said i am neither of the two and that i resented the implication to both. i told him my car is a death mobile and unsafe to drive, and also that i had been hurt 3 or 4 times already.

The car was taken into the dealership on february 15 by me and i reported the car pulling to the right as into traffic if i was in the passing lane when the brakes were applied. the manufacture kept the car for two hours, returned it to me claiming something in the brakes were not lined up, but claimed the problem was fixed and the brakes had been lubricated. february 17, 2010 the brakes released after being applied to avoid hitting a car ahead of my car who had slammed on their brakes. i reapplied the brakes and heard an extreamly loud noise comming from my corolla, then the brakes caught and i was able to slow down enough to avoid hitting the car and finally stopped. *tr

I have felt that there is a problem with the brakes of my 2010 toyota corolla since shortly after i bought it. the brakes vibrate or pulsate without warning. it seems that the abs is activated for no reason. i am not stopping short and the road has not been slippery . i brought the car to the dealer and they claimed that there is nothing wrong with the brakes. another problem i have noticed with the brakes is that they seem to grind when i am braking over bumpy surfaces. it happens with out warning, i never know when it will occur. i called the dealer and the mechanic said it is just the abs, nothing to worry about. the problem seem similar to the prius brake complaints. finally, i notice that sometimes as i am stopping that the brakes seem to slip a little but then take hold. *tr

The braking on my 2010 toyota corolla le seems to be defective. when approaching any type of change in the road surface that requires me to put my foot lightly on the brake a vibration and weird feeling in the brake pedal take place. it's startling when it happens. my wife has experienced it from the passenger side and is afraid to drive it. i've expressed my concern to the dealership. they say it's normal. very concerned about the safety of this car . i bought a toyota for it's safety and reliability so far i'm very disappointed. *tr

I have been taking my corolla to the dealership almost every week since 01/28/2010 and every week i complained about how the car was drifting side to side and how on low windy days i have to fight the steering wheel to keep it in its lane at speeds above 65mph. and every time i take it over there they say well the car is working to factory standards and they will send me on my way. i have had my brakes bled and my car alignment done twice and the car only has 2000+ miles on it. so i took the car back to the dealership from where i bought it and they gave me this cust states vehicle is all over the road at highway speeds like the computer is driving the car on its own ~|~performed health check on all systems. no trouble codes stored. test drove vehicle on 10 mile trip and ~|~vehicle performed as designed at this time. please direct customer to toyota at 1-800-331-4331 if they have any other questions. so i took the car back and called the # to them and they said since the tech could not find the problem then there is no problem. bull. so on 03/01/2010 i took my car back in to the dealership to have someone go on a drive with me and i made sure it was a windy day so they can see how hard it is to keep the car centered in its lane. the mechanic that went with me said oh i see what you are talking about he even had a hard time keeping the car from wondering off. so he said well it could be the tires are not to the right pounds. i said nope i had the air done to factory standards of 35psi all around. so he said he will need the car for over a day and scheduled appt for me to come in i took it back on 03/03/2010 and haven't had my car back since then. they still have my car in the shop as i type. so there is definitely a problem with the car. i feel like i can hurt or even kill someone in the car because of it. i have had more problems with this car and its not even 60 days old yet. plus i already had the recall done on it too. *tr

I have a 2010 toyota corolla. dec.24 2009 was a report of the first failure. i was driving out of a residential parking lot and applied my brakes before i approached the street and my car ended up accelerating hitting the passenger door of another vehicle. moreover if i drive over a bumpy surface or pot hole my pedals start to kick back or vibrate. don't know what to call it. also i have 2 recalls for my vehicle according to toyota service center. after fixing my recall i now have a new problem with my car. it makes squeak sounds and squeals as i apply my foot on the accelerator. i took it back to the toyota service center on mar.2 and they told me after waiting 2 hours that nothing was wrong with my car and put on my service receipt as normal noise. also regarding the accident a toyota inspector from corporate inspected my car before my recall was fixed and despite the two recalls said that my vehicle has no problems and the accident had nothing to do with it. i now drive a 2010 toyota corolla that squeals and squeaks every day and my insurance company is fighting property damage and bodily injury claims from the driver i struck on the passenger side and everything appears to be my fault and not toyota. im in such distress with toyota i don't know what more to do. i gave them chance after chance to help me but its just getting worse. this is my first new car and also my first accident i ever had. im scared that i have to pay 20,000 for the next five years for a defected car. please help! *tr

While traveling at about 50 mph the gauges went instantly from 50 to 0. at the same time multiple warning lights came on the dash. the car still had power when stepping on the gas, lights and radio were still on. when attempting to turn to get off the road, then steering wheel clicked and locked. there was no steering. my brakes did work. it was as if the car had shut itself off and then back on, but didn't unlock the steering. the car was new with less than 300 miles on it. this was the first incident of this kind, i had no other problems with the car until then. the car was towed to the local dealership. it was tested the next day & i was told it was a speed sensor, but the sensor was not replaced. they connected it to the computer and reprogrammed it and said it was good to go. i refused to accept it until they could tell me why it happened and what they had replaced to guarantee it would not happen again. they were unable to do so and ended up replacing my car with a new one. *tr

I drive toyota corolla ls 2010. i was driving to work today approximately with 45m/h. i was getting ready to take an exit from the highway, i saw couple cars were stopped in the middle of the exit approximately meter away from me. i decided to reduce the speed and getback to the highway(to get around them so i can take my exit. i hit my brake slightly to slow down my car did not even change speed, i tried couple times nothing happened. then i decided to step on the brake all the way my car did not change the speed at all it was going at the same speed. my car was traveling straight road for 7-8 seconds, then i had to make a quick decision so i will not hit the cars that was onfront of me(they were stopped in the middle of the road for some reason) because i was getting too close. i decided to get back to highway so i willnot hit anyone. but after i tried to get back to the highway i totally lost my control of the car. the car moved with no control for several seconds then i and up in the middle of the highway. i was lucky everyone was behind me and they stayed away from my car. i just took my car to be fixed from the sticking acceleration problem. i believe my breaks did not worked at that point and my car was moving with the same speed . afterward i was able to move my car and my brakes were working. i am worried to drive that car. i do not feel safe. i could of hurt the lady and her kids that were behind me. *tr

I am filing this report to have documentation for my records. it is on my 2010 corolla now having complete brake failure issues. it started on feb. 21,2010. the brakes started to go completely to the floor. on february 24, the brakes went completely to the floor at a 5 way intersection, and i went through a stop light. i could not stop the car. that same day i went through a stop sign and had to jam on my emergency brake, so i didn't go onto a major traveled route in vermont. this is the same problem i reported to the nhtsa on 12/12/09. the odi number is 10295431. i would like to know what was done with that complaint? did it ever get forwarded to mr. toyodo himself, congress (for the hearings?). i had complete brake failure issues for over 14 months with my 2009 corolla. what did you do with that information? the only recall i saw was for the prius? what a joke! now my 2010 corolla has complete brake failure. again toyota gets away with covering up their mistakes, and your agency does nothing. the same as covering up the new pedal recall not correcting the issue of acceleration (my odi number for this is 10314851). i have all my records and am showing them to the media (national & local). i am stating below the incident date for my current car brake failure issues is february 21st. i am however stating injuries and reported to the police. i had an acceleration incident on january 18, 2010 with my 2009 corolla . during the incident i had complete brake failure and was injured. i did report it to the police. *tr

I purchased a new toyota corolla in jan 2010. i took it to the dealer for gas pedal recall in the first week of feb. after that i started facing brake issues. one day my car moved few inches back on uphill in spite of me applying the brakes. i called the dealer right away. they refused to take a look the same day as they did not have time. next morning the brakes failed again when i was driving downhill resulting in me hitting the car infront. i again took my car to the dealer. after test driving they tell me that they can not repro the problem. the issue with the brake is an intermittent one. it does not always happen, but when it does it is very dangerous. *tr

I bought my toyota corolla s on december 30, 2009. within a week of purchasing the car, i noticed that the brake pedal began to feel spongy and non-responsive. i contacted the dealer and was initially told that this model had a longer brake travel than previous model years. i persisted in getting the dealer to adjust the rear linings and bleed the brakes and this seemed to help somewhat. but as the brakes wear, i can feel the problem occurring again. the brake pedal is difficult to modulate, has a spongy, non-linear feel that increases braking distances and makes the car more difficult to drive. i feel that there is a design flaw in these cars that should be rectified immediately by toyota. *tr

Since purchasing this car, the brakes have locked up occasionally. we took the car to toyota to have this checked last week; they performed two recalls and stated that the car was driving properly. since then, the brakes have locked up twice. i liken it to how your car feels when there is low traction - but the low traction light does not come on and i am not driving on ice, gravel, etc. i am always on clear asphalt. the car makes a metallic humming sound and the brakes lock up for approximately 4-5 seconds, during which time i cannot stop. luckily, 90% of the time when this happens, there is no one in front of me; however, last week i was driving in downtown pittsburgh and i slid into the intersection. *tr

I am having a major problem with my brakes in my toyota corolla 2010 vehicle it has less then 5,000 miles and yet the brakes have to be practically pushed to the floor to work, they seem to be not working properly , especially on ice cold days. i almost had an accident and let me tell you i am a very cautious driver and am scared that eventually my brakes will not stop and i will be killed or worse yet kill another person by hitting them with my car. i noticed a recall back in august about the same issue but not for cars sold in pa. it gets very cold here too. they should have recalled all of these vehicles before their are lots of deaths. *tr

When i took my vehicle to the dealer for it's 3 month checkup, i informed them that i was having issues with the brakes and the steering. i told them that the car feels like it is out of alignment because when driving over 45mph the car pulls to one side and it is difficult to keep in a single lane on the highway. when i described the braking issues with the car, they told me that the brakes are different than what i have been used to with other vehicles. the brakes don't seem to engage until the pedal is at the floor board. when they were ready to turn the car back over to me they told me that they did an alignment on the car and that they adjusted the rear brakes and bled the lines. i noticed that when they test drove the car they only went 3 miles. that distance, in the part of town where the dealer is located doesn't even get the car up to 40 mph. the original complaint of the car drifting is still there. now the brakes hop and chatter when you press on the brake pedal at speeds of appx 45 mph, and when at a complete stop the car tends to creep forward even though the brakes are fully engaged. i bought this vehicle solely on the toyota reputation, and now i am sorry that i did. i bought this vehicle on november 2,2009 and am still waiting to hear anything from toyota regarding the accelerator pedal recall/repair. i should have gone with my first instinct and bought the dodge instead of the toyota. *tr

I purchased a brand new 2010 corolla at toyota city, mamaroneck, ny on 8/31/09. i felt vibration in the steering mechanism, a strange feeling in the brakes, heard a noise in steering wheel, and a strange feeling in the way the car rode immediately when turning and brought the car back to the dealership on 10/5/09. i did not bring it back right away due to time constraints, and i felt maybe i needed to get used to the car. i had a 2003 corolla before, and this car felt completely different in its ride. not as tight a ride. on 10/5/09 the car was in the shop all day and they found it had warped rotors and needed new brakes. they told me the car

For car braking system: as you press the brake pedal, you have to press it really hard for it to start to stop the car,if you stop the car, and release the break pedal the car goes so fast that it seems like you are pressing the gas pedal ( but nobody is pressing no pedal at all). the braking on a shallow road makes the car shake especially the braking pedals and it makes noise, and at the same time it is needed to put some extra force and push the brakes really hard for it to work, the road does not need to be that bad for it to happen, at times it happens on a very small depression. *tr

Multiple incidents... the three most recent occurred on 2/8, 2/10, and 2/15 of 2010. this problem has been happening since we purchased the car, i figured it was just because it was a new vehicle and needed driven (broken in) so the brakes would find their best working levels. the problem occurs when driving, at any speed, and in all road conditions. the incident on 2/8 my wife was driving and only going about 5-8 mph. as she made a turn the car proceeded to shutter and the low traction light again came on, no braking was available during this incident, but luckily she was able to come to a stop before hitting another vehicle. on 2/10 i was going to take this car to finally have them fix the problem and in (very safe) good driving conditions i experienced what my wife had explained that the car has been doing for the better of 6 months. as you proceed to come to a stop the car accelerates upon depressing the brake pedal. when this happens (i have tested this) if you keep the pedal at the same point the car will continue to speed up slowly, but if you take your foot off the brake the car seems to maintain the speed. now this is where my wife will not drive the car any longer, when you press the brake further down to stop it locks the tires for about a second before the abs even kicks in. being that this is a cold area and we likely have snow during the winter months i am amazed that if any other corolla are having this problem they all have not slid off the road. when i experienced this problem on 2/10 i was going to take it to toyota for service. never made it, did not trust the vehicle to safely get me to my destination without injury to myself, others, or property. the last incident on 2/15 was the same problem, and at this point my wife will no longer drive the car. this is the vehicle we purchased to keep our newborn safe... looks to have been a poor choice. i finally risked my life and took it to toyota tonight, we will see what comes of this. thanks *tr

I purchased a 2010 toyota corolla toward the end of 2009. i will advise that something is not right with the braking system. the brake pedal is soft, and at times when pressed and the car comes to a full stop, it feels like the pedal keeps sinking. the brake pedal response does not feel consistent, and occasionally i pump it in order to get a more firm feedback (the pedal seems to firm up at second press ). luckily no accidents to report, the car keeps stopping, and a no problem message received from the dealer when i took the car in for a check soon after purchase. i thought it was just me, but now i have to wonder! *tr

The brake of toyota corolla 2010 does not respond effectively. it is hard to make a complete stop even it is completely pressed down to the floor, which is really scary. i am in el paso, and it is a hot area. so the brake recall on some of the cold states does not make sense. it should recall all of the corolla 2010 for brake fix. *tr

Purchase new 2010 toyota corolla dec. 18 2009. under all braking conditions stopping at a red light or stop sign. under normal braking conditions driving down the road. you touch the brake pedal and it does not engage. there is way to much brake pedal travel before you get any braking response. there is 1/2 inch pedal movement before you get any brake response at all. this problem occurs everytime you brake. return to toyota dealer for repair 12/21/09. no repair was done. they said that was the way the new braking system worked. just get use to it. *tr

I drive a 2010 toyota corolla. there is something wrong with the antilock brake system; especially if i am trying to apply the brake to slow the car and am making a right turn(even slightly turning right). it's like the brakes lock up and the steering gets like a mac truck. this also happens when i go over a bump and/or pothole. it most recently even happened when i was driving down the highway and there was a slight right curve in the road and i wasn't applying the brakes. i took the car into the dealership today and they could find nothing wrong. within an hour of leaving the dealership; it happened twice yet they couldn't duplicate the problem. i have a brand new car and am afraid to drive it. supposedly my car wasn't recalled for the gas pedal because it was made in japan but feel like the gas pedal is sticky at times. i am very upset because i just put all this money out and i have an unsafe vehicle to drive. my daughter and i were going to try and drive across country this summer and now we cannot possibly for we donot feel safe in this car. toyota should have to buy back the vehicles. i believe there is a much bigger problem causing all this that they are not admitting and/or have not found yet. i didn't complain or take the car back right away because i had similar problems with the scion xd and was told there was nothing wrong again and again. this is an ongoing problem. *tr
