On february 18, 2010, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened preliminary evaluation pe10-008 to investigate complaints of steering wander or drift in model year (my) 2009 and 2010 toyota corolla and matrix vehicles.the complaint descriptions indicated dissatisfaction with the on-center steering feel in the subject vehicles. some drivers (~25%) related the feel to driving in a strong crosswind and others indicated that the effort and attention required to maintain heading increased driver fatigue on long trips.these complaints all relate to the system operating as designed and do not involve failure of any steering system components.the subject vehicles are equipped with an electronic power steering system that was introduced in the my 2009 vehicles.the power assist, including on-center steering feel, is controlled electronically and is part of the system calibration.toyota responded to steering feel concerns from some customers by issuing a technical service bulletin (tsb-0140-10 steering on-center feel) that released an optional eps electronic control unit that has a re-calibrated on-center feel.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist. the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted by the circumstances.for further details see the attached vrtc and odi closing reports.

The vehicle has developed steering issues at about 39000 miles. i am finding that the steering is oversensitive. you must constantly correct the steering at all speeds, it takes a lot of concentration to drive down the road and stay in your lane. i am concerned that this may also get the attention of law enforcement assuming that one is driving under the influence. i have owned three corollas and have never had this issue. tires are wearing normally however.

We purchased a used certified 2010 corolla about a month ago and soon discovered that it took constant adjustments in steering to keep the car tracking straight on the expressway. i researched online and found many serious complaints about this car's steering as well as a fix offered by toyota to replace the power steering computer assembly (t-sb-0140-10). we took the car to the dealer and had the new one put in. the day after it was done, we drove approximately 230 miles round trip, almost all of it on the freeway. we were pleased to find that the steering was good and the car tracked straight. two days later, we did the same trip and immediately knew something was totally different. the steering was suddenly far worse than before the fix. it felt like we were hydroplaning, drifting, and floating side to side, and i had to concentrate fully on keeping the car in my lane. it felt much like driving on a wet, slippery surface. i drove awhile before exiting the freeway so my wife could take it for a test drive. she said it was downright scary. then my college-age son gave it a whirl. he agreed about the scary part, saying it was completely wrong. he finally pulled into a rest stop and we turned the car off for the first time in about eighty miles since we had been switching test drivers with the engine running. when we resumed driving from the rest area, the steering was fine. it was completely different than ten minutes before. that was the end of our two-handed, white knuckle driving session. we continued to our destination and then back home with normal steering. we've owned toyotas since 1978. this is our fifth corolla. we have never experienced anything like this in our lives, in any car. in our case, this came out of the blue, right after we thought things were good. there's something going on with the corolla steering that demands a real fix.

Car has been feeling strange at 60mph - pulls to left sometimes and if the wind blows it feels like its going to loose traction. today this happened with some rain on the road care lost traction pulled left hit a transfer truck - spun around in the road into a hill and rolled. car is totaled and my wife was lucky not to have been killed. the back of the car is gone! if this happens in the wind people are going to get killed in the rain. this needs fixed.

I now have 47,000 miles on my corolla.today i was driving on the interstate and approached the speed of about 65 mph. i attempted to change to the right lane and the car would not turn. i did not know how to describe it other than to say that i had no control over the steering at all for about one quarter of a mile. i have since seen other complaints and can agree that it was as if the vehicle was hydroplaning and it was very scary. the car actually proceeded down the middle of the two right lanes and luckily no one was in the right lane or i would have had an accident. once i slowed down, control resumed and i pulled off the road and was very shaken. we took the car to toyota and the response from the service manager was that there have not been any complaints or recalls, but he would check it out (really?). he later called and said he found a brake problem, but nothing with the steering. not satisfied with this answer since i was driving the vehicle and i know what happened and there is a problem. he blew it off as wind or perhaps the road condition. it was not windy and i was on a smooth interstate highway. not meaning to be rude, but why does this investigation show closed with 298 complaints? why are those of us complaining not being taken seriously? the acceleration problem started with just a few and escalated. why can we not take care of this problem now before people are injured? and last, why does a safety issue such as this that should be considered high priority take so long to get something done? i am in sales so i drive a lot of miles and have owned several different vehicles this is the first time i have ever been concerned regarding my safety and that of others around me while operating my vehicle due to an issue i cannot control such as this.

When i was driving my toyota carolla 2010 on 12/29/2011 at around 10.30 pm, suddenly i felt that the steering was so rigid to turn and noticed in the car dashboard warning indicator lights for abs, engine malfunction/check engine indicator, break, vsc off, were illuminating. and the vehicle was totally stopped in the middle of the road. i was totally shocked!!!!!!!!!!! i tried again to start the vehicle but it failed.i towed the car to toyota dealer and they ran vehicle test and told me that throttle body assembly has to be replaced. when this incident happened the mileage of the vehicle was approximately 9020. i called and wrote to toyota usa regarding this issue but didn't get any reply even after 6 days!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2010 corolla s model with 44k miles on it . my wife comutes with this vehicle every day for work. i drive the vehicle on the weekends when we travel out of town. last week while i was driving my wifes car i noticed that the steering felt loose and unresponsive at low and especially at freeway speeds. it almost feels like the car is hydroplaning. i asked my wife if she had noticed any difference in the car since we have owned it. she confirmed with me that the steering did feel significantlly different and descibed the feeling exactlly like i had around the time i noticed it as well. i then got on the internet to do some research on this problem and i seen that there were many 2010 corolla owners that had the same problem as i. all research seems to to be linked with the electric power steering. i now feel the car is unsafe to put my family in especially since i had saw that there was 8 accidents and 11 injuries and 168 complaints linked to this problem on the (nhtsa) website.

Have no control of steering the alignment is not correct and the tires are bald after rotation every 5000 miles. dealer says the warranty does not cover these things after i paid for extra warranty up to 100,000 miles. goodyear will not help with tires. toyota dealer that car was bought from says they do not cover this under my warranty the car has not been wrecked or any other mishaps. i expressed my concern for the tires at 15,000 miles to ensure they were rotating when serviced and they assured me they were. the tires are bald and took to a tire dealer to express my concern they said they car was out of alignment in the front. the dealer then told me they were not responsible for this. i guess my question is shouldnt their technician been able to see there was an issue with the front end alignment when rotating the tires and notified me of this problem? also the steering is off it feels like i am hydroplaining all the time and that it is windy all the time. i have no control of the car over 55mph.

The steering of the automobile becomes difficult at highway speeds. the car continually drifts to the right and left requiring constant adjustment. free play in the steering wheel is excessive and the wheel is stiff and unresponsive. windshield wiper speed is not fast enough to clear the windshield in downpours.

Since the day we took ownership of our 2010 toyota corolla, i noticed that driving highway speeds, the steering feels very loose. it takes two hands to constantly try to keep the car to go straight. now at 44,000 miles the electronic steering (electric motor) whines/whistles intermittently at speeds above 45 mph. this is not an alignment or tire wear issue as it has done this since new.

We purchased a 2010 toyota corolla s4 in feb. of this year. i loved my toyota & the gas milage i has getting (major reason we bought the corolla). however, i just took it on a long highway/interstate drive 7 hours there and back. i was shocked at how the vehicle handled at highway speeds. i did not feel safe going over 55 miles an hour. if i did not hold both hands on the wheel constantly, the vehicle felt as if it swaying as if a strong wind was pushing it side to side. i also own a subaru forester--a small suv. i have owned it for 6 years and never experienced on the highway what i did with the toyota corolla. i am extremely concerned and dismayed.

I have a 2010 corolla and had steering difficulties. at hitting highway speeds, it would feel like the wind was blowing my car into the other lane, yet the wind was not blowing. on 4-25-2010, my car jerked right while going 43, causing me to hit a ditch, go airborne, hit a telephone pole, do a 360 and land back on it's wheels. my car is now not drivable and not repairable. before the accident i thought it was the wind blowing my car, but moments after the wreck i knew it was something more. seeing others having the same problem, i now know what happened.

 1. this car can not be driven in a straight line on the highway even when you hold steering without moving. it seems vehicle slowly, consistently drifts mostly to the left and to the right. one needs to pay so much attention on steering while driving. this problem has been there since day one (8 miles) and i requested to fix before i sign the paper work but not has been taken care other than car wash. this issue still exists even after performing alignment during our first service visit as i thought it was an alignment issue. we believe it is a very serious issue than sticky pedal and pose a potential risk for corolla owners if we can not control steering. it has potential road hazard as the vehicle wanders both left and right especially with heavy traffic and feels like car wheels are not under control. we are positive that these steering/suspension issues were also raised on other 2010 corollas by a number of owners. toyota and dealers must be fully aware of these concerns but failed to declare up front. during our second visit they told us about ts 1040 and replaced steering control computer board. seems wandering issue is gone for now. but tires are problem as i am having concern from the beginning. 2. i feel humming mild vibration/resonance in steering wheel when we cross 50-60 mph. it feels like tires are vibrating the steering wheel. replacing computer controller did not fix mild vibration of steering. 3. tires: as i had doubt about tires this could be tires problem but toyota service team is not willing to accept the fact. once you cross 62 mph you can clearly feel the tire vibration mainly in a steering wheel and also on the vehicle. road force balancing has been done but there is no improvement. i am not sure it is engine related or tires. i have been insisting on replacing another set of better balanced tires or different make of tires.

 1. this car can not be driven in a straight line on the highway even when you hold steering without moving. it seems vehicle slowly, consistently drifts mostly to the left and to the right. one needs to pay so much attention on steering while driving. this problem has been there since day one (8 miles) and i requested to fix before i sign the paper work but not has been taken care other than car wash. this issue still exists even after performing alignment during our first service visit as i thought it was an alignment issue. we believe it is a very serious issue than sticky pedal and pose a potential risk for corolla owners if we can not control steering. it has potential road hazard as the vehicle wanders both left and right especially with heavy traffic and feels like car wheels are not under control. we are positive that these steering/suspension issues were also raised on other 2010 corollas by a number of owners. toyota and dealers must be fully aware of these concerns but failed to declare up front. during our second visit they told us about ts 1040 and replaced steering control computer board. seems wandering issue is gone for now. but tires are problem as i am having concern from the beginning. 2. i feel humming mild vibration/resonance in steering wheel when we cross 50-60 mph. it feels like tires are vibrating the steering wheel. replacing computer controller did not fix mild vibration of steering. 3. tires: as i had doubt about tires this could be tires problem but toyota service team is not willing to accept the fact. once you cross 62 mph you can clearly feel the tire vibration mainly in a steering wheel and also on the vehicle. road force balancing has been done but there is no improvement. i am not sure it is engine related or tires. i have been insisting on replacing another set of better balanced tires or different make of tires.

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 toyota corolla le. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds on the freeway the electric power steering would not have any stability. the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer nor repaired. the manufacturer has not been contacted either. the failure mileage was apporximately 80. tb

Original filing: odi#10317281 on dec 12, 2009 as ... at speeds over 50 mph the steering wheel seems to lock into a position and resists being moved to either side until excessive force is applied, several pounds of force i would say, then the steering wheel jumps to a new position and the car takes off to that side, requiring another hard pull on the steering wheel to try to go back toward center. i had to fight this car for three hours each way on the highway, and the slightest inattention was likely to result in the car heading for one edge or the other of the lane, since it seems to periodically just drift off path for no apparent reason-- no change in road slope or geometry, but the car would start moving toward one side of the other. (tire pressures were checked before the trip). ... .... resolution: after 19 months of avoiding using the car for highway driving, we took the 2010 corolla s to dealer where it was purchased, with 7600 miles on it on march 17, 2011 and requested them to check for service bulletins related to the continuing problems with steering control (or lack of it!) and they replaced the steering ecu under toyota service bulletin 0140-10r1 with a new ecu (toyota part #89650-12c20 ) this work was done under warranty, no charges. no other changes to tire pressure or alignment were done, but the results are amazing! the car actually handles and responds to the steering wheel like you would expect, and is easy to steer accurately within the lane at speeds up to 70mph (local speed limit) and does not require constant fighting with the steering wheel to try to correct vehicle direction. much much better! i wish that we had found out about this service bulletin last year, since it was issued by toyota back in aug. 2010, but it seems they don't advise anyone of this tsb, and only perform this replacement if the owner makes a specific complaint, after the aug.2010 date. thanks to odi for your help.

Purchased 2010 with 35k miles. test drove car but did not notice steering issue until i drove it a lot. the steering control force changes with speed. steering will not stay straignt and pulls to left depending on speed the pull may be worse to the left. took to dealer twice and ntb for alignment but is according to repair shops the aligment is in specs and the tires are good. if it turned to the right i would be bad but better because now it turns towards oncoming cars right now and poses a danger to myslef and family.
01/22/20112000
Extremely light steering at speeds over 50 miles per hour. virtually no road feel. sensation is similar to driving a video game. all control needs to be through vision as there is virtually no feeling of resistance in the steering wheel making the car very difficult to control on curves or when buffeted by winds produced by large trucks passing by. very tiring to drive. feels especially unsafe at night as in the dark there is less visual input regarding the upcoming road and with such minimal road feel through the steering wheel driving feels unsafe. this is a new car with less than 2,000 miles. replacement of the steering computer by the dealer did not sufficiently correct the problem.

 1. 2010 toyota corolla s was purchased from a toyota dealer with 8 miles. right after going off the lot, and onto the freeway, car was unstable. even if you hold the steering wheel straight, the car wants to jump left and right randomly. basically it is unstable. 2. car is unstable and requires more than normal concentration and more effort to drive straight, as car does not track straight. 3. vehicle was brought to dealer with approximately 185 miles. test drove with technician, who said it veers slightly right. alignment was done. the front was off by a bit and corrected. but rear of car was out of spec with regards to left and right toe. basically both rear wheels facing towards the left. toyota dealer said they are unable to repair this problem. i bring in a toyota technical service bulletin that addresses on-center steering feel. the document requires alignment done, then power-steering ecu replaced. my ecu is then replaced at the dealership, but alignment in rear is not adjusted, since the dealer said it is not adjustable. they give me back the car with the new ecu even if rear toe is off along with total rear camber. they also say that total rear toe is correct at .38 deg, but even if left and right rear toe is off, as long as total rear toe is good, car is within toyota specifications and tolerances. i do not agree with the statement. if left and right toes are off, then car is not aligned. right rear toe is out of spec by .15 degrees while left rear toe is off by -.09 degrees. i take the car and drive it for 1 day and a half, and the car veers right on the freeway. if it hits a bump on a turn, it usually makes the car want to jump right. basically proving that the rear toe is out of specifications.

My 2010 toyota corolla steering is difficult to control. the car wanders around the road. i thought it was the alignment. despite an alignment service, the steering is still very difficult and exhausting. the wandering, corrective steering measures that have to be taken and constant vigilance when driving are exhausting. it is a difficult car to drive, particularly in heavy traffic with narrow roads and at the higher cruising speeds. this has been going on since i purchased the car from the showroom.

I have a toyota corolla 2010,i had it since june 2010, . i went through a major car accident on hw 1 ca @ 8:45 am on tuesday which was a sunny, clear , not foggy nor rainy day (weather condition was perfect),i was driving on 63 mph (normal speed is 65) on the fast left lane and suddenly i felt that the left front tire is veering the car into a different direction acting as if it below up (but it didn't) and my car is veering to the left , my steering wheel is locked and is not responding at all when trying to change the car directionto the right. there was no way to drive the car in a straight line. the steering wheel failed completely to respond to any attempt to turn it to the right in an attempt to gain control over the car and attempting to drive it in straigt line. brakes as well were not responding. all attempts to stop the car or turn it to the rigt to avoid bumping the rails and keep it straight in the lane failed. i completely lost control over the car & it started fishtailing in the front. the car didn't stop until it bumped into the guarding rail, at this moment the car just stoped and it took the car more than 20 feed to autonmously stop by it self. i failed to stop it.at this moment the car corrected its direction &went in straight line dirsection scrubing against the rail completely damaging the entire left side of the car before it stall. then all the dash board lights and car sounds went on and the car stalled. the car was not in a drivable condition so i had to tow it away. i have a witness who described my accident saying that my car kept swirving to the left & was ambagiously uncontrolled, he was the one that took care of me after the car bumped the rail. this accident is a life threatening accident not only for me but also for others on the hw. i was lucky it happened on my way home after i droped off my son to school ,the two car seats i had in the car were damaged, the car damage was estimated by $10,000. i suffer from a severe pain

I bought this vehicle a little over a week ago, and have had immense problems steering it. once i hit 35-40 miles per hour, it becomes incredibly stiff and difficult to steer. highway miles are the most difficult, and it takes an incredible amount of effort to keep it straight. i have had incredible pain in both shoulders since buying this car, a problem i have never had before driving any other car. for whatever reason, stabilizing this vehicle is incredible difficult, and in my opinion, is extremely unsafe to drive as a result. due to the pain in both of my shoulders, and my safety concerns while driving it, i will undoubtedly be selling this car as soon as possible.

2010 toyota corolla le - wandering, floating effect steering. on roads that slope to right of vehicle, occasionally vehicle will pull left sharply into incoming traffic. requires constant steering correction. when driving on a country road in the rain, car would pull shaply to the left when driving under low older power lines. dealer mechanic test drive described floating wandering steering. alignment showed rear axle could not be aligned. tire inflation correct. dealer said that no repairs are available at this time. took vehicle to dealer three times asking for repairs. 7400 miles on vehicle.

Bought a new 2010 toyota corolla s. drove it on the highway. the steering is horrible. the car will veer to the right, then with a small correct, will pull to the left. you get it going straight then it will pull one way or the other all by itselft. kind of like it is really windy, but today was a calm day. this is going to cause an accident. from what i have been reading, a lot of other people have complained. what are you waiting for? someone to die?

I bought a new 2010 corolla le the fourth of april 2010; test drove it etc. everything seemed to be just fine i did a long trip to the niagara falls trip approx 1600 miles round trip. during the trip, i could tell something was wrong with the steering. i found that i had to focus on the road because the car would slowly change lanes. i though it was the wind or something else. i have to drive my car 80 miles every day it is a continuous battle when driving in the highway. i have had the car back to the dealership three times, one of the technical guys has laugh on my face and told me that i have to drive your car with two hands and focus one hundred percent on the road. that means you can open your windows, turn on the radio, etc. the dealership has already performed three alignments on the car and they could find anything and the car still has the same issue. like the technical people on toyota say

When driving my 2010 toyota corolla on the highway, the steering will suddenly drift from side to side giving the sensation that i am hydroplaning or that my tires are bald, even though the roads are completely dry. luckily, nothing has happened yet, but it is very disconcerting and very scary. i could easily see something happening if i were to overcompensate and steer to the other direction. this would be easy to do because the steering feels so loose. i have not done anything yet. it's such a new car that i'm not sure what i can do - until something actually fails, which would be too late. i really hope nhtsa researches this issue immediately.

Just purchased a 2010 toyota corolla s on july 23, 2010. the steering did not seem right. at one week i went back to the dealer and they gave it an alignment, which did not really improve the steering. it is horrible on the highway and my arms hurt from trying to keep it in the lane. thought it was just me until i started to investigate, and found out all of the other complaints about the same problem. it make you feel like you do not have control of the car. it swerves from side to side. tried putting more air in the tires, does not help. i have not even made my first payment yet. i have called corporate offices, and am awaiting a response from them. we need to start a class action suit.

I owned a 2009 corollaand the accelerator surged in charlotte n.c, in march of 2010. i traded for a 2010 corolla, this car has as serious problems. i have spoken to my insurance agent twice last week, asking if he had any complaints about steering control. this car, at speeds of 45mph and up moves about the lane abruptly and is not easy to correct. it is really easy to overcorrect. the car feels as if there is lots of play in the steering and moves to the left or right. it is a constant ordeal to maintain control. last week i pulled over alongside i85 in salisbury n.c. to gather myself. i believe this car warrants a recall. i'm reluctant to drive it, but it is the only car i have. please investigate this further

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla. the contact stated that when on the highway at about 55mph the steering will not track straight ahead. the vehicle seems to veer either to the right or left and the driver has to compensate for it constantly. the failure is worse on ice or snow or windy conditions. the dealer was notified and they stated the vehicle was performing as manufactured. a toyota mechanic drove the vehicle and experienced the failure and said that an investigator would look at the vehicle. the investigator never looked at the vehicle and the owner was told the vehicle was okay. toyota was notified and case number 1006281057 was filed. the contact also has brake failures. the brakes seem spongy and they bottom out. the brakes have to be pumped for them to function. the dealer also stated that the brakes are functioning normally also. the failure mileage was approximately 500. the current mileage is approximately 2,100. rd

I have a brand new corolla 2010 i bought this may of 2010. if i drive on the freeway, i have to continuously control the way the car moves. it will not go straight in the lane. the car will wander and its like the wind is hitting my car. i'm returning it this week, but i really hope this will get fixed soon.

The odi started an investigation in feb. about the steering on '09 and '10 corollas. at that time there were 168 complaints and 6 crashes. now there are over 500 complaints and 34 crashes involving these vehicles, and no updates. somebody please actually read this and let us unfortunate toyoya owners know what is gping on! the matrix was also listed in the investigation, but there are no steering complaints for those model years listed. i own a 2010 corolla and have filed a complaint, been to the dealer several times, and called odi and got no help from anyone. these cars have a serious problem wiyh drifting all over the road (as 99% of the complaints say one way or another) and i would like to know what to do. i hope other people who have filed complaints keep checking up on them. thanks in advance for listening!!!!

I have a 2010 toyota corolla. the vehicle has been taken to the selling dealer twice and an additional dealer once. i took it in for what i deem as unsafe steering. the vehicle wanders even when holding the wheel locked straight with both hands. the dealers checked alignment and said its the nature of the electronic steering. my wife wont drive the car for fear of how it feels.

The vehicle pulls, you have to continually correct the steering to stay in the lane. more noticable the faster the speed. a long drive makes my nuckles turn white and my shoulders hurt. at first i thought it was the wind, but the more i drive it the more noticable it is.

Purchased a new 2010 corrolla. driving home from work last week, i had two service lights on (my car has 1400 miles on it). the steering in the car seemed loose as i drove home, but when i went to turn on my street, the steering wheel did not turn and the abs failed. i hit a curb on the opposite side of the road damaging a strut and an alloy wheel. my local dealer, lakeland toyota, told me it was not their problem but that i needed to figure out how to pay for the repairs. they told me that they had no idea why those two warning lights were on. i am currently trying to work with toyota corporate to get this resolved in a manner that i will feel safe driving the car. kind of hard to do when they refure to accept that there is a problem.

I recently purchased a 2010 toyota corolla xle. i have noticed at highway speeds the vehicle is impossible to steer normally. apparently the electric power steering is oversensitive or something because you cannot keep the car going straight with normal steering input. if a highway patrol officer were to follow this car for any distance, he would think the driver was impaired. i have owned toyota vehicles for 20 years and have been very satisfied, but this is unacceptable and potentially dangerous.

Toyota corolla 2010 steering unstable to drive specially freeway driving. every time you drive it feels like it want to go left or right. went to back to dealership and try if they can fix the problem. they said nothings wrong with the car it is just a light car. i told them i used to drive a small toyota yaris and it is much more stable to drive than the corolla i just bought. please do help me! the car is brand new. i'm starting to loose my trust with toyota.
05/22/20107
I just bought a 2010 toyota corolla less than 30 days ago. i believe the steering is either going to cause an accident or at least cause us to get a ticket from drifting in and out of our lane of traffic. i am 32 years old and have bought and drove tons of vehicles so i am not an inexperienced driver. i own a 1988 toyota pickup that is easier to keep in a straight line than this car. before i was ready to purchase the car i did some research and saw some complaints about how hard it was to keep them driving in a straight line. i thought it was just people jumping on the toyota recall bandwagon trying to get something for nothing. i also figured it would be a perfect time to buy a toyota and get a deal because of the problems they are having. when i mentioned the problem to the dealer while test driving the car he said i haven't heard anything. it probably will just take some getting used to. it has been a month and their is something wrong with the electric power steering. it is very very difficult to keep in a straight line. it is almost so sensitive that just putting your hands wheel will cause a slight change in direction. the only way to keep the car in a straight line down a straight road is to take your hands off the wheel. if it is windy the vehicle seems to correct for directional changes that are not happening. it drifts horribly bad during even small winds. i know it is not just my driving habits. we just moved from palmer alaska and routinely drove a 1990 ford escort, and the 1988 toyota pickup in winds over 50 miles an hour with effects less than those in the 2010 corolla.
05/10/20101000
High speed steering is very sensitive. making it very difficult to drive on the highway at 60 mph. oversteering is common. the car changes lanes with just 1/2 of movement on the steering wheel.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) [xxx] may 21, 2010 heritage toyota shelburne rd. dear heritage toyota, i am returning the toyota corolla i purchased from you less than 30 days ago. i expect a full refund as provided by state and federal statutes. i find it unsafe to drive. the vehicle does not track straight. it too readily redirects itself from a straight path, drifting alternately from to right or left. my driving time is spent intensely concentrating on correcting the right and left adjustment the vehicle has made on its own. it feels like i am driving on rails that i do not have control over or that i am driving on the crest of a severely crowned road and that i must constantly redirect the vehicle back uphill to the top pf the crown.. the steering does not have a sweet neutral spot; it is as if the vehicle is always trying to turn and it my job to correct its turning. this happens on all roads and at all speeds. it happens both when i am holding onto the steering wheel and concentrating on correcting, and also when i relax my grip from the wheel and let the car

2010 toyota corolla steering unstable to drive.
05/03/20109800
Basically, the car loses all its balance when you hit about 50mph on highway.steering becomes vague. the car drifts left or right, as if a really strong wind hits the sides. instead of getting heavier, steering becomes so light, you can't keep the car in the lane. in two recent occasions, i almost hit the cars which were driving next to me, in their lanes.

I purchased a 2010 corolla in august 2009. i did not test drive the car on the highway but rather in the neighborhood of the dealership. once i started driving the car on the highway, i noticed that the steering seemed too loose. when i took it to the dealership for 5000 mile check and complained about it, i was told that the steering mechanism was fine. i continued to expereince difficultly driving the car in speeds greater than 50 - 55 miles per hour. i don't know how else to describe it but it feels like i have little control over the car. i definitely have to use two hands to control the car and a sneeze or changing a radio station causes the car to drift or swerve into another lane. the car doesn't feel tight to the road, it feels like it is hyrdoplaning. driving in a stiff wind is challenging. on the 10,000 mile check up, i complained again and was told that my complaint had been noted. i question the safety of the car.

On 05/03/2010 after my daughter graduation from the university of florida we were driving toyota corolla 2010 from gainesville fl to ft. lauderdale fl. we were keeping speed of the vehicle around posted legal limit of 70 mph and experienced some difficulties to keep the vehicle straight within the limits of the lane boundaries.this car is suppose to be driven by my daughter who only now is starting to drive on the highways and i am very concerned about safety of the car. we never experienced anything like this during all our previous driving experiences with other cars. we actually look at the internet and found that it is seems not our unique experience and may be related to the design or manufacturing defects in the new electric power steering device on the toyota corolla latest model. please take a look at the problem before it is too late for some toyota corolla owners.

2010 toyota corolla le - wandering of vehicle while traveling at highway speeds. alignment is also off.
09/03/2009100
I purchased my toyota corolla le 2010 in august 2009. we found the steering wheel was not aligned properly and the vehicle sometimes skipped/shifted on freeway. we reported this to toyota before their massive recall. we took it to sterling mccall toyota in houston several times and they insisted there was no alignment problem, even a third-party mechanics inspected the vehicle and identified there was alignment problem. the sterring wheel has to be palced slanted to the left side in order for the vehicle to go straight. it was so obvious that anyone you can notice it. the car dealer and the toyota us headquarter told us there was nothing they could do. this has be a security concern and we have been trying to resolve the issue with toyota but has failed to. i urge nhtsa to investigate this matter to ensure consumer safety.

Just purchased new 2010 toyota corolla 4 days ago and i'm having steering difficulty at speeds of 60+ mph. the car is very difficult to keep centered in the lane and it constantly sways left and right. steering correction is needed every few seconds to prevent unintended lane changes. it feels as if the car is being bounced around by strong winds, but no wind is present. the car feels out of control at highway speeds and i am very concerned as to its safety.

I'm also making a followup to my original complaint #10302584. these corolla's have a serious built in problem! you (odi) started an investigation in feb. stating 168 complaints on the steering in 09 and 10 corollas, there are now almost 500!!! 95% of them say the same thing! car wanders, feels like it's windy when it's not, car steers on its own, wanders both left and right, feels like it',hydroplaning, constant corection needed, feels like i don't have control, and on and on and on. why dont you have toyota send a questionaire out to corolla owners and ask them how their car drives on the highway? i saw a friend driving one almost identical to mine today and asked him how his handled on the road and he described the same feeling. i suggested he tell the dealer and also file a report on this site. the dealer says toyota is investigating but nothing is happening yet. couldn't odi speed this up a little. i took mine in at 400 miles and they said nothing was wrong and offered me 14000 trade in against a used camry (i paid 17800) now , at 7000 miles they offer 12500 i'm bleeding bad and don't know what to do. please help me and other corolla owners. thanks for listening to my rant.

Letter from senator tester on behalf of constituent re toyota (direct response to billings office) the consumer stated the vehicle would drift out of the lane he was driving in. the vehicle pulled to the left or right at times. during inclement weather, the vehicle was very difficult to steer. at low speeds the vehicle steered fine, but it was highway speeds where there was a problem. the dealer patched a tire and rotated them, but the steering problem continued. another dealer discovered one of the tires had 5 psi more than the other tires, they also made some adjustments to the rear end. the consumer was then advised to put weight in the trunk and to get snow tires. after the work was completed it seemed a little better, but the vehicle still wandered into the next lane. the consumer went back to the first dealer and was told the steering issue was a design problem and there was nothing they could do. *jb

I just took my brand new 2010 corolla on the highway for the first time last weekend. it was as if wind was blowing the car back and forth. if you left the wheel in one place, the car would still veer as if you were slightly turning the wheel one way or the other (constant correction required). also, on the trip back i had a full car with 5 normal sized individuals. the car veering was much worse. it was as if the tires were very low also. just a feeling of not having control over the car.

While driving my corolla, even i do not hit the gas pedal, the rpm stays around 2000 and sometimes it started to stuck around 3000 rpm for 15 to 30 seconds than goes to normal. i had difficulty to slow down in busy traffic, because even i hit the breaks it does not cut the gas so the engine still tries to run and the car still tends to go, so i am not able to slow down or it takes time to slow down. i am driving my toyota in the 5th gear and around 3000 rpm. when i need a sudden stop, i let go the gas pedal and hit the break. the etcs commands high idle even i hit the breaks; the pistons are still working (the engine is still running in gear) with 3000 rpm so i am not able to slow down or stop. this is a serious safety problem. how come ecm would command for high idle from time to time? how can i stop the car or slow down in need while ecm is commanding high idle? it is impossible to have a proper control on the car when ecm commands high idle. who can give me guarantee that it would not get stuck in higher idles? (because it used to stuck around 2000 rpm and right now it also started sticking around 3000 rpm). when i get close to a curb or to an exit i stop hitting the gas pedal assuming the car will get slow but since it stucks at high rpm,s the car does not get slower when it is in the gear.

I purchased a 2010 toyota corolla s 4/22/10 .on the 70 mile drive home , i noticed that the car wandered alot as if it were being buffeted by wind. at times the car would even cross the center line into oncoming cars. this is a very dangerous problem with this steering. my 2009 didnt have this issue.if any policman were following me ,they would probably assume i was drunk.

I have a 2010 toyato corolla. i am scared to drive it on the highway. the steering is very sensitive and i cannot keep it on the road if over 65 mph. it feels like your are hydroplaning, the wind is blowing you all over the road. my boyfriend followed me home and said it look like i was doing dwi on i-95. if the wind blows just a little bit, you are all over the road. this is very dangerous, i have taken it back to the dealer 3 times. the first time the salesman exlained it was electrical steering and i will get use to it. the second time was with the technician who wouldn't go with me on the i-95 and twick the alignment. the 3rd time 2 days later and that is when they couldn't help me and said they logged it with toyota. i am very mad and upset. i feel i purchased my car in good faith and now i am stuck with a car costing $353 amonth for the next 5 years, that is a chore to drive on the highway. this is my 3rd toyota in 20 years. i am very upset because i didn't drive any other vehicle before purchasing this vehicle because i trusted toyota. i have logged a complaint with office of consumer affairs under the lemon law and with the manufactor. i feel i have been betrayed by toyota b/c they were aware of the problem and lied to me the first 2 times. my name is charlotte sisson, i can be contacted at 912-271-0965 and my email address is charlotte@centurytel.net

I am a new owner of a 2010 toyota corolla. i am experiencing steering problems on the expressway where the car wants to drift from side to side and requires constant correction by the driver to maintain proper control. this is an ongoing occurrance and not due to any particular road conditions. i contacted my local dealership where i purchased the car and they said that they have not had any other similar complaints even though researching the internet i found that others were experiencing the same problem. it also stated that there were less than 100 complaints, so i wanted to make sure that i reported mine.

I leased a 2010 toyota corolla le on 4-2-2010. the first time driving on the highway was very scary. i could not keep the car going straight. it felt like a strong crosswind constantly blowing the car around. i have an appointment at the dealer on 4-19-10.

On march 6, 2010 i purchased a new 2010 toyota corolla. i drove home approx. 50 highway miles and immediately noticed that the steering seemed very different. the slightest movement of the steering wheel resulted in the car wandering right to left. i was aware that the car had eps but in no way aware that there had been problems reported similar to the one that i was experiencing. perhaps rather than a slight movement of the steering wheel, some issue caused the need to continuously steer the vehicle. in any event i thought that the eps was just something that one had to get accustomed to. however, now that i am aware that i am not alone in having this experience, i felt that i should complete this report. driving long distances on the highway is not a pleasure in this vehicle. that is about it, thanks for your time.

Purchased a 2010 toyota corolla le at the end of december 2009...in addition to the floor mat recall (official recall notice, for same, finally received from toyota corp. in today's mail) & the unintended acceleration problem (already had part retrofitted to gas pedal; even though toyota never sent a recall notice)...an ongoing problem still exists with the automatic steering: when driving at a high rate of speed, having to wrestle with the steering wheel in order to keep the car within the lane; constant movement / veering of vehicle because of unusual / unacceptable steering wheel vibration. stressful driving due to having to grip the wheel which is in constant motion; fearful of losing control of the automobile while traveling at 65+ mph in highway traffic. have contacted dealership, on 2 separate occasions thus far, to find out if they can rectify this issue. being told that toyota headquarters has not sent a repair recommendation to their dealers & the service depts, currently, do not know how to repair the problem. i'm fully aware that toyota issued a press release stating that they are investigating this problem; unfortunately, just not fast enough. requesting that nhtsa require a deadline date for toyota to come up with a fix for the automatic steering problem(s) evident in this model vehicle & a recall be issued for same. it is an extremely hazardous condition & could cause catastrophic accidents, if it hasn't already.

I bought a toyota corolla 2010 le on 04/03/2010, and when i drove it on the freeway first time, i was shocked/scared the way was stirring/handling. i almost had two accidents with it because of the stirring issue. when i drove it on the freeway i saw that the car is loosing balance (the back car shakes), i found stability problems (as if i drive in strong winds), and big steering problems (as i learn to drive a tricky bicycle). to get and maintain an almost control on the car direction i have to focus my actions as my corolla has only two wheels like a bike. i almost act as an equilibrate for a rope dancing. the experience of driving my corolla showed that i have limited control over it, and most control i lost when i had to use sudden brakes at high speed - it was like on the ice. back jumps and i stir in same direction; back jumps again in the other direction and i change the steering in the other direction too, and so on. these events occur almost every time i drove with speed around 60 miles/hour on the freeways that are not straight. the consequence is that i am afraid to drive my new car because i am not able to control it, and i risk an accident. i went to toyota dealer, they said that they know the situation from other costumers too, but nothing they can do about it. please investigate this issues until is not too late, and people make accidents and injure. thank you. *tr

Steering complaint. i just purchased a used 2010 toyota corolla for my 60 mile daily freeway commute. the steering is very concerning to me as it seems like i have to struggle to keep the vehicle straight. it's almost as if it's floating and being blown in the wind, except there's no wind actually blowing outside. this is very noticeable (and concerning) due to my long commute.

I have 2010 toyota corolla (vin# [xxx] ) purchased on oct 31 2009 from sansoneautomall, nj. there is a problem with the steering column initially which started with some unique sound, then from feb 2010 i was seriously facing steering freeze (will get harden) only 15-20% of steering moves when in 0' speed, for this i have visited my dealer service center 3 times but there is no use. only with lot of disappointment and arguments saying what is the reason to buy a brand new car to get problems i was requesting to solve my problem. they simply said, there is nothing we can do if you have no other mean to commute its upto you and if you want you call toyota head quarters for this. i even spent lot of time in calling main toyota nr but simply i get voice message that there is huge volume of call waiting please wait. i really wonder when i/anyone buy a car from dealer and if they cannot receive me assist me properly where from i get the justice????. recently i found two more new problems they are: in a slope road car picks-up acceleration and maintains speed as if it is cruised and once i apply break after a while the speed comes to normal position other prob- fuel indicator stuck up to full level indi' even the fuel is low. with this i'm day by day getting depressed as i spent quite lot of savings (money) on the car to avoid any hassles buying a used car, but unfortunately its a disaster to me. i request to provide me needed solution to fix my depressing situation. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

2010 toyota corolla, with defective seat and steering apparatus. i have expressed my concern with the manufacture and the dealership with no resolution
01/03/201030
Steering wanders slightly most of the time, responding to road surface, wind, passing trucks and other vehicles. it feels like i do not have complete control over where my car goes -- that there is no direct control over the steering by the steering wheel. this requires 100% attention to the car's direction because, if i look away even for a moment, the car drifts on its own. this is a dangerous situation. i owned and drove an earlier model toyota corolla (2004) until i bought this car; in the 2004 model, the steering was precise and the car held the road beautifully. the earlier car held the line i established. not so the new one -- it has been changed, and the change leaves the car in control, not the driver. i feel like i go wiggling down the road, not driving down the road. note: i am struggling to find the right words to describe this problem because i do not understand the problem and because it is so different from my earlier toyota corolla. has toyota redesigned the steering system? if so, they messed it up! i hope this helps them get it fixed. this problem occurs all the time!!!!

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla. the contact was driving at approximately 60 mph when the contact felt the vehicle pulling. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the contact could not find the cause for failure. subsequent visits to the dealership still provided no reason for the failure. the problem still occurred when the contact drove over 50 mph. she stated that she could not control the vehicles steering. the dealer told her that the pulling sensation was normal as the vehicle was gripping the road. the failure mileage was approximately 5,400. the current mileage was approximately 7,600. the vin was unavailable.

I traded in my 2009 corolla le and purchased a 2010 corolla le two weeks ago. while driving this car at highway speeds, i am having a very difficult time keeping the car from wandering. it feels very much like i am driving in a strong cross wind although this occurs during all wind conditions. this car is exactly like the car i traded in except that my old car didn't have this steering issue. the dealer said that they are waiting to hear from toyota about a fix and that they were certain that they couldn't fix my problem at this time. i was told to inquire again when i bring my car in for it's 5,000 mile oil change. hopefully i'll sitll be alive to complain at that time.

2010 toyota corolla le. steering issues as noted by others - going straight/staying in lane, pulls to either left or right and wanders, floats, feels like a wind gust hitting the car etc. at various speeds although ti is more noticiable at speeds above 40mph. this causes an unstable feeling and need for driver to correct. car was purchased on 3/31 and i have not taken it back to the dealer at this time. making arrangements to do so. car has less than 400 miles. have experienced this from the time of purchase.

Steering concern with 2010 toyota corolla; complaint conists primarily with the points; experienced of being buffeted via a strong wind would be an accurate description. often correcting movement of the car, as if aligment is non-existent. dry steering noise & vibration on turning at speed of 10, 30, 40 max mph.

Our 2010 toyota corolla wanders all over the road like you are driving in a heavy cross wind. the dealer says it is the road but we drive approx. 3000 miles a month on a lot of different roads and is the same

My 2010 toyota corolla pulls like the alignment is off but on both sides regardless of road grade. gale toyota of enfield, ct were i bought the car first said it just needed to be broken in, then when they were fixing the acceleration recall i told them it's still there they said that's normal, finally they did the alignment and said its fine. still had the same issue with no improvement. as i rite this, lynch toyota of manchester actually test drove it and confirmed that the car is almost un-drivable at highway speeds. two hands are needed at all times over 40mph. i will see what they come up with when i return to pick the car up today. this problem is ongoing and constant regardless of the date of indecent entered.

While driving at 35-40mph around a curve, i has pressed on the brake pedel to reduce speed an the vehicle failed to respond, but accelerated in speed while steering became inpossible to control, it was if the vehiicle was controlling it self. i had been drove into an through a ditch an out, hitting a mailbox, concrete lined driveway exiting the first ditch an entering another also hittng a street sign as well as a mile marker sign, my seat belt failed to lock which lead my head to repeatedly hit the top of vehicles windshield as well as the steering wheel. futhermore the airbag failed to deploy. i suffer from sever headaches, my vision in lt eye although inproved has greatly decreased, as well as memory.

2010 toyota corolla - the car has poor steering. it drifts all over the highway. requires constant correction like i am driving in heavy winds. i brought it into a toyota dealer and they claim there is nothing wrong with it. they say i need to get used to elctronic assisted steering. i have been driving it for four months now, and i cannot get used to it.

2010 toyota corolla le which suddenly veers left or right at high speeds (45mph or greater). while holding the steering wheel perfectly straight, the car will wander left or right causing the driver to correct the steering and pay excessive attention to simply keeping the car in its own lane. this occurs all the time when driving above 45mph. no accident has taken place, but i fear for myself and my family members who drive the vehicle. as a result, we have driven the car sparingly or only for local destinations which do not require taking a highway. i have taken the car to a dealership where the service advisor admitted that the steering is too sensitive causing the vehicle to wander and that while there is no fix for it yet [he] hopes for a fix soon. regardless of these statements, he wrote on my service papers that the vehicle road tested normal characteristic. a month later, i called the service advisor again to complain about the problem still persisting. i requested to bring in the car for an additional review of the problem. he denied my request by stating that there's no point in bringing in the car until a fix is issued. i then brought the vehicle to another dealership, which was not helpful at all. they outright denied my claim that there was a problem and stated on my service paperwork that the vehicle drives normal and that they cannot duplicate the customer concern. no fix has been done and the vehicle sits in the garage virtually untouched (less than 800 miles) when it was bought over 3 months ago.
03/27/2010
While driving my 2010 toyota corolla at highway speeds, the car drifts unpredictably and suddenly, with no apparent cause. i have noticed this as an issue since soon after purchasing it in july 2009. as a result of these steering issues, i have often come frighteningly close to cars in the lanes on either side of me, and i am afraid that this will actually cause a high speed accident at some point in the future.
03/23/2010500
We purchased a 2010 toyota corolla. we did not notice the power steering problem right away. after driving it for about a week the power steering would start floating when the wheel would be straight. it is very dangerous because if you do not hold the steering wheel tight the vehicle floats into other lanes and onto the shoulder. i have taken it twice to the dealership now just to be told that the vehicle is within their requirements and that there is no problem with the steering. they refuse to admit that something may be wrong and state that the corolla now has electronic power steering which is why it feels that way. no car should steer you off the roadway when it is driving straight. this is not normal and toyota is refusing to acknowledge the problem. no one has been injured yet and no accidents have happened because you have to constantly keep correcting the wheel when the vehicle is moving.

.the steering on my 2010 corolla is hard to control. the vehicle feels like it is wandering on the road and it is difficult to correct. the problem is much worse at highway speeds above 60mph. driving the car in crosswinds is difficult and scary due to the floating feel of the steering. *dt

Steering too sensitive. most notable at freeway speeds. wont track correctly. wants to drift either left or right. correction only makes the car drift the other way. must be very attentive or car could drifl into other lane. condition since new. dealership has verified the problem but cant seem to fix it. been to dealership service twice for this condion.

We purchased a brand new 2010 toyota corolla less than a month ago from a texas dealer in north houston. immediately upon driving home we noticed a meandering of the front end, difficulty in keeping the car in its lane at high speeds. it felt like driving a car during a windy day. as it was a windy day we thought nothing of it. it behaved as you would expect at high speeds, on the freeway, on a windy day. the problem with the vehicle is that it needs constant correction to maintain a straight path while steering; constant small adjustments to keep it in its lane. the problem is exascerbated at high speeds as small adjustments seem to be amplified. and a small adjustment to the right for example, while the vehicle meanders to the right, creates an exaggerated movement to the right; kind of a doubling of the event. so if you are correcting movement to the left, by adjusting to the right, and the mechanical problem kicks in with more right movement, you get a big shift in the vehicle, the need to maintain attention to the steering is constant. your hands are always at the 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock position, and always making corrections to the front end meandering. at high speeds it is more problematic because the mechanical reactions get amplified at high speeds. at low speeds the problem exists, you still have to react, but you have more reaction time before the vehicle moves to an uncomfortable position within the lane. where this event is extremely dangerous is on two lane roads with high speed limits. two lane roads in texas can be narrow with small shoulders. when the vehicle meanders, you pull to the opposite direction. with oncoming traffic or narrow shoulders on the two lane highways, margin of error is much smaller than on city freeways and streets.
11/01/2009
At this point, i wouldn't necessarily classify it as a defect, but as i have read with regards to other owners, my 2010 toyota corolla le (with automatic transmission) also exhibits light steering at highway speeds. drivers really have to pay constant close attention whenever driving above 45 mph in order to avoid moving or wandering out of your lane with the slightest movement of the steering wheel. in other words, the steering on this automobile is extremely sensitive, especially above 45 mph. as, such, whenever i am driving more than two hours at a time, i get extremely fatigued. in my opinion, a variable assist power steering system, based on vehicle speed, would have been a more appropriate type of power steering system to engineer into this car. i am not sure if this could have been done since this automobile utilizes an electric power steering system in place of the typical hydraulic system.

I just bought a new 2010 toyota corolla. upon taking it up to highway speed the first time i noted a drifting in the steering that seemed unusual (car rides fine for a while then drifts right or left causing you to over steer it back). i drove it for the rest of the day and the next day and am certain that something is wrong with the steering. the dealer said it is the new electronic power steering but it sure seems unsteady. something is wrong and these cars should be recalled
03/16/20104020
I know there have been some issues reported on power steering in 2010 corollas, and i have experienced something like this. we have noticed wandering while driving down the highway quite often. it will wander one direction and then when you straighten it back out, it will do it again. it will go both directions, so it's not alignment. i decided to pay very careful attention last time i drove it. while going highway speed of 60mph, i was heading straight, on a straight road. i felt the steering wheel tighten up a little and then the wheel itself turned about 1 inch from where i was holding it. this happened several times in about a 5 mile stretch and then it stopped. i didn't have any more issues with it the rest of my trip, which was about 160 miles. i have called our local toyota dealership where i bought it and they told me to bring it in so they could inspect. i got it back the next day and only a few miles were put on and they claimed nothing was wrong, so we have not had anything done to correct the issue.

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla. one week after the vehicle was purchased, the vehicle began to exhibit steering failures. when driving at higher speeds, the steering wheel would constantly move back and forth without driver intent. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they attempted to align the steering wheel but to no avail. the vehicle was diagnosed by the dealer on two occasions for the same failure. the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle may have been designed to operate in that manner. there were no recalls for the failure. the failure mileage was 982 and the current was 6,220. updated 05/06/10. *lj

I have a 2010 toyota corolla. when i am driving on the highway and reach speeds of over 40 mph it is very hard to keep the car in a straight line or in the proper driving lane. the car begins to sway as if it is being buffeted by hard winds. often it takes two hands on the steering wheel to get control of the car's swaying motion and just when you think you've got it corrected, it sways again and can easily overcorrect itself. *tr

Bought 2010 corolla on 2/27/2010, felt the wheel is very tight comparing to the rental 2010 corolla i had before purchasing this corolla. sent it to dealer, they felt the same way, and swap the power steering for me while kept it in for 11 days. i took it home yesterday, but found its as tight as before. i feel its like driving a truck, and power steering is barely working, especially the speed is over 20mph. i feel i have to hold very tight with both hands on the highway to keep it straight. *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). i have a 2010 toyota corolla. i purchased it in july and realized fairly soon that there seems to be a problem with the steering. at first i thought it was just me because i have driven large suv's for the past 20 years and i thought it was just because it was a small car. my grown son used my car to go on a road trip and when he got home, he told me i had a serious problem with the steering. he said he could hardly keep it on the road. if you take your hands off the steering wheel for even a second, the car veers towards the ditch. it seems to mostly happen at higher speeds. i took it to the dealer and they said there is nothing wrong with the car. i decided to drive it for awhile as i felt comfortable because it has a full warranty. about two weeks ago, i was driving in the left lane on the interstate and my car abruptly veered into the right lane and i almost side swiped the car in the right lane. it was as if a huge blast of wind hit me from the left and shoved me into the right lane. it scared me and i was so close to being in a major accident. i brought the car back to toyota again this week and they tell me again....nothing wrong. the car is squirrelly and all over the road. i really feel there is a serious problem with the steering in this car and i do not know where to go from here.  Car wonders while driving on a straight road or highway, usually about 40 mph or faster, constant feeling of drifting (feels like there is a strong crosswind blowing the car around.) tire pressure is proper as stated on door jam, as well makes no difference in steering if tire pressure is lower or higher. *tr

My 2010 toyota corolla still veers from lane to lane even after i took it to the dealer and complained. the dealer took the car in and realigned the wheels and said if there is a recall, you can show that we at least looked at your car. the car still goes from lane to lane and never tracks straight. if my attention goes to see if i can pass a car etc, i am headed to the other lane and have to correct right away. this is going to get someone seriously injured or killed-what are you waiting for-please issue a recall!!-there is something faulty with toyota's electronic steering and i believe, as many others who have complained about this same problem, have put and unsafe car on the road. *tr

Vehicle steering does not feel right. cannot keep car driving straight. it feels as though it is windy, when it actually isn't windy. vehicle is brand new, just a couple of days old. this occurs when i drive faster than 50 mph. called dealership and told them of problem, and they have not had any experience with such problem. i then searched online and found many people complaining about the same issue with the same car. 2010 toyota corolla s. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla le. while sitting idle in the parking position, the vehicle momentarily lunged forward. while traveling at various speeds as low as 50 mph, the vehicle would veer to the right. also, the keyless remote, which also acts as a vehicle locator, would only operate intermittently. often, the vehicle locator alarm would go off on without driver input. the dealer advised changing the batteries in the keyless remote. that did not correct the failure. the dealer then attempted to reprogram the keyless alarm sensor and advised the locator could only be used for short-range locating. no further repairs were performed on the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were approximately 6,300.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) toyota corolla 2010 steering is dangerous above 40 mph, the car won't stay in it's lane and is almost impossible to keep the car straight down the road without constant counter steering. interstate speeds requires nerves of steel and i do not recommend it to even the best driver. this car is dangerous and the local dealer says everything is fine. i refuse to drive this car over 65 mph, even on the interstate, very tiring and stressful to travel in this car (at speed). this car has handled like this since new..no corrective action (fix) from the dealer as of 3-8-2010 [xxx] *tr

Toyota corolla difficult steering at highway speeds. steering sticks in position when correcting and requires constant re-correction. car does not self center upon leaving curves. when correcting to the left, car will climb over crown into on-coming lane unless re-corrected. difficult to keep the car going straight, requires constant attention and is fatiguing. *tr

I have a 2010 corolla 4 dr le model, which i bought in july 2009. i continue to notice that the car wanders on the road while driving; generally it is really noticeable about 50 mph. when there are windy conditions (frequent in kansas), i have to constantly correct my direction of travel since the wind exacerbates the wandering of the vehicle. i thought that it was due to the crown of the particular road, but it does it on all roads. my wife has driven the car and noticed the same thing. i have not lost control of the vehicle, but it concerns me that a car would not drive in a reasonable straight line. this is the very first car i've ever owned that did it; it is not the first toyota i've ever owned, and have never ever had such a problem. i cannot give a specific date of incident, as it does it all the time, so i will indicate the delivery date of the vehicle to me. *tr

2010 corolla is unstable at speed over approximately 55 mph. the car wanders dangerously to left and right, being particularly vulnerable to any cross wind or turbulence from other vehicles. it is not possible to use any vehicle controls (such as turning on the defroster) while driving at highway speeds without having the car veer suddenly off course. the car feels as if it is missing a suspension component in the front end- there is a dangerous lack of stability at highway speeds. i even purchased new tires after only 2000 miles in an attempt to alleviate the problem, but it is the car and not the tires causing the problem. this car is unsafe at highway speeds. *tr

I have been taking my corolla to the dealership almost every week since 01/28/2010 and every week i complained about how the car was drifting side to side and how on low windy days i have to fight the steering wheel to keep it in its lane at speeds above 65mph. and every time i take it over there they say well the car is working to factory standards and they will send me on my way. i have had my brakes bled and my car alignment done twice and the car only has 2000+ miles on it. so i took the car back to the dealership from where i bought it and they gave me this cust states vehicle is all over the road at highway speeds like the computer is driving the car on its own ~|~performed health check on all systems. no trouble codes stored. test drove vehicle on 10 mile trip and ~|~vehicle performed as designed at this time. please direct customer to toyota at 1-800-331-4331 if they have any other questions. so i took the car back and called the # to them and they said since the tech could not find the problem then there is no problem. bull. so on 03/01/2010 i took my car back in to the dealership to have someone go on a drive with me and i made sure it was a windy day so they can see how hard it is to keep the car centered in its lane. the mechanic that went with me said oh i see what you are talking about he even had a hard time keeping the car from wondering off. so he said well it could be the tires are not to the right pounds. i said nope i had the air done to factory standards of 35psi all around. so he said he will need the car for over a day and scheduled appt for me to come in i took it back on 03/03/2010 and haven't had my car back since then. they still have my car in the shop as i type. so there is definitely a problem with the car. i feel like i can hurt or even kill someone in the car because of it. i have had more problems with this car and its not even 60 days old yet. plus i already had the recall done on it too. *tr

2010 toyota corolla s purchased by my wife in july 2009, with automatic transmission . she drives the car only locally on suburban streets, at speeds less than 45 mph, and has placed less than 3000 miles on the car in 7 months. recently we took the car for a 'road trip' of about 175 miles each way, with me driving. this car does not steer properly on the highway, if proper means that it follows the drivers input and control movements. at low speeds it seems that the steering wheel moves easily like most cars with power steering, and the car follows the steering wheel movements fairly well. but at speeds over 50 mph the steering wheel seems to lock into a position and resists being moved to either side until excessive force is applied, several pounds of force i would say, then the steering wheel jumps to a new position and the car takes off to that side, requiring another hard pull on the steering wheel to try to go back toward center. i had to fight this car for three hours each way on the highway, and the slightest inattention was likely to result in the car heading for one edge or the other of the lane, since it seems to periodically just drift off path for no apparent reason-- no change in road slope or geometry, but the car would start moving toward one side of the other. (tire pressures were checked before the trip). our family has owned 6 toyotas before this one, and none of them has ever had the lack of response and wandering problems of this car. we still own a 1992 celica, which is a corolla in a sporty body style, and it tracks beautifully to the drivers control, with over 200,000 miles on it. i think that if a car had a steering system with apparent looseness in it that would duplicate the side directions of this corolla, while the steering wheel is not being moved from straight ahead, that car would not pass its annual safety test in this state. this car requires a constant struggle to keep it in its lane at highway speeds. *tr

I purchased this brand new 2010 toyota corolla for my daughter. while driving this car on the highway at speeds of 65 mph or higher, the vehicle wanders. it constantly feels like sudden gusts of wind are pushing the vehicle out of the driving lane. this is extremely unnerving. i am a captain with a major airline, and i took the car out to get a sense of what my daughter has explained to me. in 31 years of flying, i have never felt more insecure in a vehicle. i am afraid to relax. i understand the need for vigilance while driving on a highway. driving this vehicle requires so much concentration that what should be a simple 4 hour drive from my daughter's college to her home is exhausting. *tr

On my 2010 toyota corolla, at highway speeds (65-70 mph), the vehicle will feel as though the steering is loose...like i'm going over a metal-grate bridge, where the car moves sideways on it's own. i drive approximately 100 highway miles a day, and this is a daily occurrence. i brought the vehicle to toyota on 3/4/10, but they claim they do not feel the steering problem. i don't feel it was sufficiently tested, as they did not do any highway driving. they've dismissed my fears and will not be correcting the problem. *tr

I find it very difficult to track the vehicle in a straight line on an open road in windy or uneven road conditions. there is very little or no feedback through the steering wheel. the vehicle demands your full attention under these conditions making it very tiring and in my opinion somewhat unsafe at speeds greater than 50mph. seems to be ok or better at low speeds such as in residential or city environments. these concerns were reported to the dealer service department and in the new car feedback form i received from the manufacturer. i received no feedback from the manufacturer on that survey and the dealer service department stated the steering and wheel alignment were within tolerances. i did however get the following hints from two different sales representatives , over inflate the tires, look further up the road ,put some weight in the trunk, none of which i employed. ridiculous!!! *tr

Since delivery, my new 2010 corolla has had a steering problem. it veers or wanders to the left or fight randomly and unexpectedly at highway speeds (65-75mph). not the alignment. very dangerous if there are other vehicles beside you. is not due to the wind - occurs on windless days. have owned 25 cars in 50 years, some toyotas; this is the worst - will not stay straight; both dangerous and fatiguing to drive. must fully focus and make constant corrections to track straight. recall! unsafe! *tr

While traveling at about 50 mph the gauges went instantly from 50 to 0. at the same time multiple warning lights came on the dash. the car still had power when stepping on the gas, lights and radio were still on. when attempting to turn to get off the road, then steering wheel clicked and locked. there was no steering. my brakes did work. it was as if the car had shut itself off and then back on, but didn't unlock the steering. the car was new with less than 300 miles on it. this was the first incident of this kind, i had no other problems with the car until then. the car was towed to the local dealership. it was tested the next day & i was told it was a speed sensor, but the sensor was not replaced. they connected it to the computer and reprogrammed it and said it was good to go. i refused to accept it until they could tell me why it happened and what they had replaced to guarantee it would not happen again. they were unable to do so and ended up replacing my car with a new one. *tr

When i drove my 2010 corolla from the dealer it had five miles on it. within one half mile i realized that the car wandered left and right and needed me to steer left and right to keep the car in the center of the road. i knew right away that the problem was the caster adjustment was set so the caster was faced forward. i brought it back and the service mgr said it was designed to have the caster set forward by two degrees. i am 72 and a car guy. a forward caster will cause the car not to be able to steer straight. it was to be driven by my grand daughter who has 18 months driving experience. we brought it in for service to have the caster set to 'follow' rather than 'lead'. the service people said it was set to toyota designs of two degrees forward. that is the problem along with, maybe, something in the electronic controls that might be adding to the problem. someone is going to get killed. if toyota doesn't speak to this and correct it i need to have this car replaced by an amish horse and carriage. toyota has introduced a new feature that is deadly. *tr

This was not a failure, but more of a constant problem. my 2010 toyota corolla has a serious tendency to want to wander in the lane. i drive to work everyday on the express way, about 25 miles. it requires constant monitoring and adjustments to keep the vehicle tracking straight. it actually feels like the car is always on a slippery road, even when the pavement is dry. as speeds increase the problem increases; it is always present. never worse at one time than another. i have not reported this issue to the dealer, but i have an appointment today at 12:30 for the gas pedal recall, i will inform them of the issue as well. *tr

Bought new corolla 2010 for my wife about three months ago. i thought right from the first drive that its steering wheel was very sensitive, that is, even small motions of the steering wheel appear to get amplified to relatively larger directional changes on the moving car. however, my wife did not think so. typically, however, she drives it at slow speeds, like, at most 40 mph, as she avoids highways. we have never driven it at higher speeds like 65-70 mph where i understand some other corollas start meandering. i don't know if it is the same problem i am describing above. but after having read about similar problems to 2010 corollas, which are recently so much in the news, i thought we should report it too. *tr

Bought corolla new jan 2010. the current mileage is 2850 miles. the car will not go in a straight line while driving over 55mph. the car drifts to either the left or right without turning the wheel. car feels as if you're driving in hard winds causing lane shifts without turning wheel. one must keep both hands tightly gripped to the steering wheel and continually over correct the wheel from left to right or right to left to keep the car traveling in a straight line at higher speeds. this problem occurs while driving on open roads. took car to dealer, tech test drove car while i was a riding along and found car to not drive normal. after test drive tech tested car, car was checked in shop and found to have no problems within their testing capabilities. wanted to keep car for further testing because he didn't know how to fix car but noted something was wrong with car. 4 days later i got a call from service department assistant manager stating that toyota was aware of problem and they had no fix available for my cars steering. was told that they didn't know when car could be fixed. when i ask for a loaner car until my new corolla was repaired i was told they would have to call me back. i was called back within 10 minutes and told no loaner car would be given. after that call i got another call back from the same person stating that they were going to test drive my car too see what she thinks about the car. within 5 minutes i get another call stating that she, the service department assistant manager, was in my car right now doing 70mph and there was nothing wrong with my car. summed up: from 12:30pm to 2:30pm, the same day, i was told car had a problem that tech could not fix to there is nothing wrong with your car.. the next day i got another call from the dealers service department stating that some other tech had drove the car and nothing was wrong with the car. i was told that is how the car drives and i would just have to get used to it. *tr

2010 toyota corolla -- steering problem. very difficult to keep car within travel lane when driving at highway speed. this is not related to wind gusts but occurs at all the times. feels like there are dead spots in the wheel and there is little to no road feel feedback. the car does not track straight on its own but requires constant steering corrections. i am 69 years old and have owned and driven many cars/trucks including my 2002 toyota avalon and my daughter's 1993 corolla and have never before experienced the type steering issue that we have with our new 2010 toyota corolla. i believe this to be significant safety issue and if a driver in not paying 100% attention and constantly correcting to keep car within the travel lane the result could be disastrous. toyota needs to be required to fix this steering issue with its new corolla's. [this occurs all the time - but your form forces me to enter an incident date so i am just using jan 1, 1901 to proceed with the form. updated 03/19/10.*jb

Toyota corolla s 2010 [xxx] with extra stabilizer bar kit, purchased 11-30-09 with delivery in 12/09. 1) approximately 1 month after purchase ,the car starting to veer sharply right then left when driving on the highway, it was/is difficult to control requiring a tight grip on the wheel. it feels like strong winds are moving the car but winds are absent and road conditions are normal. this event comes and goes unexpectedly, generally lasts the duration of my commute once started, sometimes occurs with the tire pressure gauge but not always, sometimes occurs after rapid braking. it does not feel like an alignment or balance problem, the car darts from one end of the lane, to the median of the lane on its own. on this date 2-24-10 my local dealership filled the tires, and made a slight change to the left alignment they could not duplicate the problem and stated this could be a matter of personal preferences regarding how i felt the car drove when this occurred. the toyota manager also told me today that they understand there could be a problem but they have no direction on how to repair it. when asked then if he could guarantee my safety and that this would not occur again he stated no, but there was nothing for him to do. no injuries to date. i do not feel toyota is making reasonable efforts to quickly eliminate this problem, acknowledge a problem, and do not wish to resolve this with statements regarding my personal preference for the drive, and since this in their opinion is not reproducible for them it is not a viable problem for them to repair. 2) on approximately 2-11-10 i had to use my brakes in an emergency situation in which my brakes were temporally non-response. i had to downshift the gears, remove my foot totally from the gas pedal ,and maneuvered the car away from the other stopped car. no abs was felt, the brake pedal was depressed fully, this occurred at hwy speeds. no acknowledgement of problem or remedy proposed by toy currently. *tr

I own a 2010 toyota corolla and am awaiting the repair for the accelerator issue. this complaint is related to the electric power steering. the car does not want to track in a straight line. you must keep both hands on the wheel and are constantly tweaking the steering wheel to the right and left to keep the vehicle driving straight. the higher the speed, the more problematic the steering is. gusty winds make you feel like you could lose control at any minute. i am hoping that toyota will step up and acknowledge an issue with the steering is the vehicle can be exhausting to drive like this. each tiny input forces the car to veer in that direction immediately and you then correct to the other direction and it veers that way. i have never owned a car that required this much attention and effort to drive in a straight line. *tr

I drive a 2010 toyota corolla. there is something wrong with the antilock brake system; especially if i am trying to apply the brake to slow the car and am making a right turn(even slightly turning right). it's like the brakes lock up and the steering gets like a mac truck. this also happens when i go over a bump and/or pothole. it most recently even happened when i was driving down the highway and there was a slight right curve in the road and i wasn't applying the brakes. i took the car into the dealership today and they could find nothing wrong. within an hour of leaving the dealership; it happened twice yet they couldn't duplicate the problem. i have a brand new car and am afraid to drive it. supposedly my car wasn't recalled for the gas pedal because it was made in japan but feel like the gas pedal is sticky at times. i am very upset because i just put all this money out and i have an unsafe vehicle to drive. my daughter and i were going to try and drive across country this summer and now we cannot possibly for we donot feel safe in this car. toyota should have to buy back the vehicles. i believe there is a much bigger problem causing all this that they are not admitting and/or have not found yet. i didn't complain or take the car back right away because i had similar problems with the scion xd and was told there was nothing wrong again and again. this is an ongoing problem. *tr

While driving on the interstate in speeds in excess of 75 miles an hour, my 2010 corolla shakes violently in all conditions. i also have an issue when slowing down where the gas pedal will take longer than what is expected to return to an acceptable area and stop accelerating. this second issue has nearly caused several accidents. i have brought this up to the dealer where i purchased this vehicle some three months ago and was told a solution is not readily available and i will be contacted when one is. both problems have convinced me to carpool to work until a solution is identified. *tr

Rental car, toyota corolla in los angeles was extremely hard to steer. as i was going down highway at speeds above 40 miles per hour it was as if i was driving through a wind storm. the car would not maintain lane very well and the steering wheel travel required to keep it in line was excessive. the wheel position had to be maintained not with slight movement but sweeping movements from positions about 10 to 2 on a clock face. due to only using the car to drive from the airport to the hotel and back, most of my driving was highway on smooth roads with no adverse weather or traffic conditions. *tr

We purchased a 2010 toyota corolla. the car will drift or veer to left and sometimes to the right. the steering appears unstable. we have returned the car twice to be fixed and were advised it is ok. my husband describes the problem similar to driving an old car with bad tie rods or where the ball joints were shot. he will not allow myself of my daughter who we bought the car for, to drive it. we are fearful of it drifting or veering into another car of semi on the highway. note this is a frequent occurring problem. this began on january 12 when we purchased it and has continued. *tr

2010 toyota corolla with 10,100 miles, steering suddenly pulls left or right randomly for some period of time, then stops just as suddenly. it occurs more so at faster speeds, but will also happen around 20-30 mph. difficult to stay in lane as it drifts extremely easily. tends to favor pulling right over left, but does both. have to physically pull back to counteract pulling. also very easy to overcorrect and look like you are swerving. has been happening more and more often in the past few months. car was originally purchased on may 24, 2009. *tr

My new 2010 toyota corolla has a problem when driven on the interstate. the car wobbles and i am constantly steering to keep it going straight. it doesn't seem stable--as if it's being buffeted by high winds even though it's a calm day. i am afraid it is going to veer off the road and therefore i have tried to avoid driving it on the interstate. i have spoken with the dealership and was informed that all the corollas are like that and it will only be fixed if there is a recall. i will not be able to keep this car if this is not fixed because i am afraid to drive it. *tr

Feb. 14 2010, i bought new toyota corolla 2010. i didn't test this car( i trusted the quality of toyota), and than i drove it home. on the way, i felt something wrong about the steering wheel. when i was driving, the steering wheel is very difficult to be contral. pull right or left side a little, steering wheel canot turn back. when i am driving, i have to use two hands hold tthe steering wheel all the time, i feel very heavy, uncomfortable, danger, tired. i test this car on the highway, it can't go straight even in 2 seconds!! feb. 15 2010, my wife brought this car to dealer, they told my wife can't return it, but can change it next day. i thought only this car no good, so i agreed to change it. feb. 16 2010, my wife and me went to the dealer and changed another car. i tested it and felt better than the first one. but after 2 days, the same problem coming, right now i can't return it. i call the dealer they told me all the same, that is not problem!!!. i am not professor to car, i am just buyer. i feel this steering wheel of toyota 2010 corolla very bad and driving danger. *tr

Steering and gas throttle problem. sometimes having difficulties steering the vehicle straight and it feels like you 're not in control with the wheel. even sometimes at lower speed. regarding gas throttle there are times that the gas pedal is not responding while you are steeping the gas pedal. it's like driving on a neutral gear. we have not reported the steering problem but we have reported the gas pedal issue twice to the dealer. it so happen that the 2nd complain we did was the time they started doing the recall. gas pedal where change as the recall required.the steering problem is now a newer concern for us. we have experienced the problem with steering before but we just ignore it. because it's been raining in our area during the fast few weeks. we where thinking that the roads are just wet and somewhat it is slippery to drive but even the weather had changed we sometimes experienced the same problem with the steering. last encounter with the steering problem is today(02/20/2010). *tr

Purchased a new 2010 corolla 4-door sedan s; immediately a problem with the brakes and steering was noticed upon first long drive. when depressed the brakes would go all the way to the floor. steering the car in a straight line down the freeway was almost impossible without constant corrections, i call it nervous steering, which after more than 50 miles because very stressful and tiring. purchase date 8-22-09. the vehicle was returned to the nearest toyota dealership located in victorville, california early sept 09. the brakes were examined and after certain corrections the brake pedal is better but not perfect. as for the steering..the technician says it's within normal parameters...what every that means. there is definitely a defect with the steering system; after reviewing the vehicle brochure regarding the steering system it reads electric power steering (eps) helps gives corolla steering response that's effortlessly accurate however nothing could more from the truth. it's been my experience after 7000 miles on the odometer...that when steering the car down the highway...the car will literally leave the lane your driving in which requires steering correction to keep it in the driving lane you're traveling. the brochure further reads that eps also eliminates hydraulic-assist components that can reduce fuel economy however i would say at what cost...if this new system renders the steering process a very nervous and tiring experience for the driver. a fatigued driver is an unsafe driver...i credit the fault with this new system eps as a potential disaster waiting to happen. it's my assessment after owning this vehicle now 6 months...that toyota needs to revisit this eps system and consider returning to the former hydraulic-assist components...it may more costly for them to build...but at least it worked. i bought this car because it had a reputation for safety and reliability however it's been the absolute worst purchase ever imagined. *tr

I recently leased a 2010 toyota corolla about 2 weeks ago. my problem is over the steering of the vehicle, i have been driving for over 12 years now, and this vehicle is totally unstable at highway speeds from 40mph and above. when i say unstable i mean the steering is too light for feel, and the car has a horrible tendency to sway into another lane. every highway trip is a potentially hazardous adventure. i read that this may be because of electric steering installed on recent model corollas...i am at a loss because i don't think the dealer is going to do anything for the steering, and i really have a strong feeling it is not the tires or brakes that toyota is claiming, that affects the steering. i feel that they are trying to work there way around this issue. i need help as i have just got into my lease, overall i still think its a good car but not with this steering, it truly is scary to drive on any highway. *tr

2010 toyota corolla s purchased in december 2009. i reported to toyota the fact that my car's steering seems to wander all over on the post-purchase survey sent to me. it happens daily on my work commute of 35 miles one way. nothing has been done, there has been no contact. *tr

When i took my vehicle to the dealer for it's 3 month checkup, i informed them that i was having issues with the brakes and the steering. i told them that the car feels like it is out of alignment because when driving over 45mph the car pulls to one side and it is difficult to keep in a single lane on the highway. when i described the braking issues with the car, they told me that the brakes are different than what i have been used to with other vehicles. the brakes don't seem to engage until the pedal is at the floor board. when they were ready to turn the car back over to me they told me that they did an alignment on the car and that they adjusted the rear brakes and bled the lines. i noticed that when they test drove the car they only went 3 miles. that distance, in the part of town where the dealer is located doesn't even get the car up to 40 mph. the original complaint of the car drifting is still there. now the brakes hop and chatter when you press on the brake pedal at speeds of appx 45 mph, and when at a complete stop the car tends to creep forward even though the brakes are fully engaged. i bought this vehicle solely on the toyota reputation, and now i am sorry that i did. i bought this vehicle on november 2,2009 and am still waiting to hear anything from toyota regarding the accelerator pedal recall/repair. i should have gone with my first instinct and bought the dodge instead of the toyota. *tr

Purchases new corolla on 12/26/09. upon driving 18 miles to my home on the freeway, i found it hard to steer the car. it felt like i was driving on ice or hydroplaning. what a scary feeling. i called my salesman, he said bring it in, but i had to get home to care for my 85 yr old mother who has dementia. i have taken it in once. the alignment was off only in the toe and adjusted as were the over-inflated tires of 37 lbs each, adjusted to 34 lbs. the accelerator pedal was replace though i had no problems. the steering is still very sensitive having to pull the car on a straight path as it tends to veer to the left or the right. my master repair mechanic and i went on a drive today, 02/18/10. he said that the rear wheels were not aligning with the steering. felt as though you were sitting sideways and trying to drive. i will have an appt on monday, 02/22/10 again with folsom toyota, lets see what we can do??? cars keep at a distance away from me as i constantly have to steer the car correctly within the lane??? ps this is my 4th new toyota, never drove one that felt this scary! *tr

I have a 2010 corolla it constantly sways while driving at freeway speeds. sometimes i need to hold onto the steering wheel with both hands to keep it from going into another lane. i switched from driving a small vw beetle and was familiar with strong winds causing these problems but when i looked out the window there was no wind all the trees were still and no flags were waving. there has been a couple of times when i really felt the car was going to swerve out of control if i didn't immediately slow down. i also feel a metal grinding sensation with my brakes when i slow down over uneven pavement or go over a speed bump. this doesn't happen every time but in the past 2 months that i've had the car it occurred 6 times. i told the toyota dealership about these problems and they said it couldn't be duplicated and that there was nothing wrong with the car. which is completely ridiculous there hasn't been a time that i've driven on the freeway and not felt this swaying. they didn't even try to find a problem. they didn't do a thing to help me. than i heard of other corolla owners having the same problems. so i know it's not just me, there is a problem with my car and they need to recognize they made another mistake. *tr

I rented a brand new (only 350 miles) 2010 toyota corolla from hertz at the orlando airport on october 19, 2009 and turned it back into a hertz location in jacksonville florida on october 23, 2009. i had trouble getting the car to track. it was very hard to keep going straight and felt like there was a strong crosswind (which there wasn't). i talked with my wife about this on that trip, but regretfully, i did not tell the hertz people about this issue. now i understand that many other people noticed exactly the same problem. *tr
10/01/20091001
The electric power steering on my new 2010 toyota corolla makes the car very difficult, stressful and unsafe to drive. at highway speeds above 65 mph any slight hand movement on the steering wheel causes the car to veer sometimes sharply making it very difficult to keep the car inside your lane. it steers jerky like a go cart and doesn't return to center. i've taken it back three times and toyota said that i'd have to get used to it. they finally realigned the front end, phase balanced the tires, and centered the steering wheel, but that did not correct the problem. the dealership acted like they didn't know there was problem and that i was the only one who had complained, said i should file a complaint with toyota, but i haven't done that yet. *tr

As noted on the news about a possible recall about the steering problems on the 2010 toyota corolla. i also own a 2010 corolla and even before the news i had problems keeping the car straight on the road. the condition gets worse at higher speeds and the problem increases when there is less gas in the tank. i took the car to the dealer to check/fix the alignment and it seems to help a little bit but the problem is still there. *tr

After reading about the toyota corolla steering problems, i wanted to file a complaint of my own. i have noticed this problem of feeling like wind whipping my car around on the freeway almost daily since i leased my new 2010 corolla in november 2009. i always thought it was the way the los angeles area roads are paved but after reading other owners' similar complaints in the news, i am sure that this is what is causing me to feel like i have difficulty controlling my car at highway speeds. *tr

I just bought this car on monday 2/15/2010, from dick milham toyota in easten p.a. there is a real problem with the steering, at speeds over 50mph you really need two hands to steer the car. i travel over 192 miles a day and im very worried about this. i am going to speak with the dealer to see if they will take the car back, i hope you are going to investigate these problems and force toyota to fix the problem before someone gets killed. *tr

My 2010 corolla has had a steering problem since its purchase. in 50 years of driving in over 25 new vehicles, it is the worst. it will not track properly at interstate speeds. it wanders randomly to the left or right. not alignment and not wind caused. you must make small corrections every second or two to maintain a straight line. passing other vehicles at highway speed is risky. this problem was first noticed on i-95 the day i took the car home. my wife did not notice it when she drives under 50mph; but is very evident at 65-75mph. it is very tiring to drive the car since you must remain totally focused with a firm grip on the steering wheel at all times since you must respond to the car's random veers to one or the other side. i have never had any vehicle do this before. i can see where an accident would be very possible at highway speeds when passing or traveling with other vehicles to your left or right. this is a problem that must be corrected, along with the accelerator problem. i had planned to complain to my toyota dealer in orangeburg, south carolina when i took my corolla in for the accelerator recall. i am very disappointed as i have owned toyotas before and, until this month, was planning to buy a 2011 toyota truck. the steering problem is real and needs to be investigated and corrected. *tr

I bought a 2010 toyota corolla s on oct. 22, 2009. at bitterroot motors in missoula, montana. the day after i bought the car i drove it to ovando, montana, north of missoula, on a tryout road trip. i noticed that it was flighty on the road and seemed to waver without reason (no wind, no semi trucks, wind shear, rain, etc). being a new car to me, i passed it off as the nature of a lighter and smaller vehicle than what i was accustomed to driving (my other vehicle is a 2004 ford f150). since that time, i have continually experienced this with no external explanation (ie: weather, road conditions, etc). this problem seems to happen at speeds of 50 mph and over and it is a consistent issue. i commute regularly between stevensville, mt., and missoula, mt., for work (28 miles one way), and i often find that the car will drift left or right when i am at a steady speed. this is in addition to the fact that my vehicle is on the list of recalls for the recent accelerator issue. i need to add here that the second day after buying the car, i was getting fuel and as i turned from the pump to re-enter the car, pop!! and the driver side window totally shattered. i immediately called the dealer at bitterroot motors and drove it to their service dept to get it fixed. they replaced the window under warranty, and told me they suspected it was a preexisting stress fracture in the glass that finally gave. i bought this car based on safety ratings, consumer reports ratings, and to get better gas mileage on my necessary trips to and from work. it isn't hard to understand the stress of this situation, not to mention economic hardship. i paid for the car outright ($18,075) and it physically sickens me to think that such serious issues exist. i haven't even owned it 5 months! at this point i am fearful of even driving the car. if the world worked in good ways, toyota would replace this vehicle completely, and preferably with something other than another toyota. *tr

I purchased a new 2010 toyota corolla from autoway toyota in saint petersburg for my wife on 12/06/09. we were stressed out after hours of haggling and high pressure from the salesmen. the next day when i drove the car more (with only 40 miles on it) i noticed that the steering was hard to handle. it wandered. i found that i have to keep 2 hands on the wheel and eyes wide as it is unpredictable. in around 6 or 7 days i was back at autoway trying for hours to get them to take it back and sell me a camry for more money!! the corolla had only 85 miles on it. but they said it had been titled, so they wanted to buy it back for a $3000+ loss to us, and then make money on the sale of another vehicle (which is the ways of the car dealer). we are stuck. so, if asked, i would testify in court that the steering in this car could cause an accident. the odds are much higher with this steering system, that someone could be hurt or killed. a car with only 40 miles on it and you notice a problem like this? imagine when it has 100,000 miles and worn tires! i have always loved toyota, until this. it makes me sick every time i drive it, and make the payment! i told my family, friends, and autoway 2 months before todays news about the steering problem broke!! any way i can help with this problem(especially if they(autoway/ and toyota) will take the car back, i will! call me to testify..*tr

I purchased a 2010 toyota corolla s on 11-7-2009. on the test drive i complained to the salesman that the steering felt strange. it seemed to have a center spot and then any left or right turn would cause a minor pull either direction as if the steering turned on. the salesman said it was the electric steering on all the new cars. that was a slow speed test drive. after the purchase i got on the interstate and was shocked to feel the steering feel as if i were going around a semi tractor trailer rig and being pushed around by the wind, but yet i was not near a vehicle. it seemed like loose steering or tire squirm. when i got back from my trip i took it to the local toyota service center and asked if there is an adjustment on the power steering or if there is an issue with the tires. to both questions my service advisor said no. on another trip on the interstate, it all of a sudden started acting like it was going to fish tail swinging back and forth, like i was ridding on balloon tires, or without sidewalls. i quickly slowed down. in cross winds or going around a semi it is worse. at my 5,000 service, i asked if there are any steering or tire issues, and my advisor still said no, but part of the service was to rotate the tires, and this has seemed to lessen the squirm. i now have 7,000 miles on my 2010 toyota corolla s. *tr

I recently purchased a 2010 toyota corolla. the car has a very loose steering system. when you are driving at speeds under 45 mph the steering is very unresponsive and extremely light to turn. at highway speeds the car will move around the lane without moving the steering wheel. the car seems to pull from side to side similar to the alignment being out of line, but it goes both ways in an almost jerky motion. at first i thought this may have been changes in the road conditions, but the car will do it on completely smooth and flat pavement. no corrective actions have been taken. *tr

My 2010 toyota corolla le seems to wander randomly left or right. it is difficult to travel in a straight line without frequent adjustment to the steering column. it feels like i am driving on a windy day and the car is being tossed around. actually, any wind at all only makes the matter much worse. almost feels like the rear end of the car has a slight fishtailing. this is all most noticeable at 45 mph and above. local service dept. could not look at it for three weeks. i will not let my 17 year old daughter drive this car. i have had this car for only six weeks and would surely give it back if i could. disappointed that i did not get a response to my emails sent to toyota. *tr

I have one of the notorious toyota corolla. the gas pedal has be fixed-maybe but i now notice an extremely touchy steering. it seems to turn ok but on the straight away you have to keep both hands on the wheel tightly it jerks from right to left always! the faster you go the more pronounced. i used to live in phila and remember what it felt like driving on ice this is quite similar. very difficult to keep in your own lane. you guys need to look into this. i called the toyota dealership i bought this mess from and asked to come in and have them look at it. we'll see. *tr

At speed it is difficult to steer and control my 2010 toyota corolla s. it drifts from side-to-side. if i do not use both hands, the car drifts from the lane marker, and at times into the next lane (to my left). i have to overcompensate and correct to the right so that i do not strike someone. the steering feels very loose. i first noticed this characteristic a few weeks after purchase (approximately 12-20-09. their is not one particular incident, but rather it is a persistent characteristic of the steering. *tr

The steering on my 2010 toyota corolla is very loose - in other words, the car tends to wander within a lane while going straight. it takes more than normal vigilance to keep the car going straight. it seems to be buffeted by the wind (such as when passing a large truck) more than any other vehicle i have ever owned. i feel the necessity to keep both hands on the wheel to keep the car from drifting on the road. other vehicles i have had track in a straight line even with my hands off of the steering wheel - not so with the corolla. the car requires a lot of attention to drive and can be tiring to drive for extended periods. *tr
02/02/2010100001
When i drive the car at normal highway speeds the vehicle feels like a strong crosswind is blowing the car causing me to correct the feeling of the wind blowing the car. it can also be compared to the tires being caught in a groove in the road. when i correct the feeling of being pushed or pulled to one side the vehicle over corrects itself causing me to have to slow down or put a very firm two hand grip on the wheel to keep the vehicle straight. after i try to keep the wheel straight the vehicle will continue to do this side to side motion for a few more seconds on its own. *tr

On november 27, 2009, i bought a 2010 toyota corolla from lake city, fl toyota. while stopped at a red traffic light, i noticed that the brake pedal moved down more light air was in the brakes. this has happened twice. i also have heard a rubbing sound when i turn my steering wheel. that has happened twice also. my first payment is next month and i am very upset about this. i am taking my car into the toyota dealership in lake city, fl in the morning. *tr

I bought a 2010 toyota corolla for my away-from-home college-student daughter. we were aware of the floormat problem when we bought the car and took delivery on october 28, 2009. the accelerator issue became known in january, 2010. the power steering issue just became public this week. i drove the car for two weeks after taking delivery to check it out for any manufacturing defects and to break it in. i did not notice any unusual behaviors for any of these problems while driving around town during this break-in period. however, i did notice when i was on the interstate while delivering the car to my daughter that the electrically-assisted power steering had an unusual vagueness to it. the car felt like it was being buffeted by high wind or turbulence from following a tractor-trailer too closely, even though the wind was calm and there were no trucks within one mile of me. as i made very minor course corrections as the road curved or to change lanes, it felt like the steering was being over-boosted, which caused a bigger path correction than intended or expected. then i got a similar reaction in the opposite direction when i tried to correct the over-correction. i think it would be fair to say that the steering wheel felt as if it was connected to the front wheels with a rope. the car has goodyear eagle rs-a tires; i have had several sets of these tires of different sizes in the past, and don't believe they are a problem. i have driven other vehicles with electrically-boosted power steering and and i don't recall such behavior. indeed, i have a class b cdl to drive motorcoaches and the older ones with over 1/2 million miles on them have more direct steering. this situation has not caused an accident; i just want to weigh in on the potential problem. i have offered my daughter another car to drive, but she insists on driving the corolla. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla. the contact stated that the steering wheel was hard to control. while driving 60 mph the steering wheel became difficult to control. he had to pull the steering wheel back and forth in order for it to continue driving in a straight line. he took the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the tow end alignment was a little off. the dealer aligned the vehicle; however, the failure was not corrected. the failure mileage was 7,500. the current mileage was 79,000.

I have a 2010 toyota corolla that has right at 4000 miles on it. at any highway speeds above 60 mph, there is a definite problem with the steering. at first i just thought it was because the car is so small that the wind was moving it around on the road. after driving it for over a month now, it happens every time i am on the interstate. you have to work to get the car to stay centered in your lane, or look as though you are a drunk driver swerving from center line to shoulder. this issue has made me think twice about driving the car. i also just read that toyota has acknowledged this issue and i believe it needs to be recalled. i bought this new car for reliability and now i am concerned whether or not i should even being putting it on the road and putting other people at risk. something should be done about this whether it be at the hands of toyota motor corp. or the nhtsa. either recall the corollas parts or give me my money back that i paid for a reliable car that in fact is not reliable after all. *tr

We have a 2010 toyota corolla. we bought it for our daughter to commute to college. it was purchased in may 2009 from freedom toyota in harrisburg, pa. after questioning her about any problems with the gas pedal, she said the 'stuck pedal syndrome' happened to her also this past fall. it was taken care of by a dealer in allentown, pa. she then also mentioned that the steering wheel 'jerks out of her hand' when driving. this has happened to her more than once. the dealer in allentown was told of this, along with the fact that she had a problem with her driver side window not rolling down when the switch was activated. this happened to her once. this dealer could not duplicate the 2 above mentioned other problems. i told her she is to document any future issues with this car. i am estimating the incident dates. she said they took place in the fall semester. i do not have the information available as to what her speed was at the time the steering wheel had a habit of jerking out of her hand. i do know that there is highway commuting involved along with non highway driving involved. *tr

Car will pull to the right or left, and then when you try to straighten it via the steering wheel it will overcorrect and pull too much in the opposite direction. whenever driving on the expressway or highway, this happens. we have to constantly keep our hands firmly gripped on the steering wheel or else the car will start drifting. this has been a constant issue since the car was purchased in dec 2009, even though we have taken it to the dealership who performed an alignment. the alignment did not fix the problem, and this occurs every single time the car is driven. *tr

From the day i purchase the car (a 2010 toyota corolla) and drove it off the lot with only 16 miles. i noticed that the car would constantly over correct and attempt to drift outside its lane at high speeds (above 45 mph). at first, i thought it was simply a new car breaking in and my brother's car (a 2008 mazda 3) show the same behaviors but quickly went away the more he drove (around the 500 mile mark). however, this did not occur in my vehicle and i am constantly having to deal with the overly sensitive steering of the car. this is has an affect of tiring me out from all the over correction. currently, i have garaged the toyota awaiting word from the dealer on the gas pedal repairs and using my oldsmobile. i would like to have this issue resolved. i hold no ill will towards the dealers, in fact i feel bad that they are caught in the middle. i certainly would like toyota to address this issue. *tr

Toyota of kingsport 2525 east stone drive kingsport, tn 37660 on november 27, 2009, i purchased a 2010 toyota corolla, from a 3rd party for my ex-wife of gate city, virginia. during the test drive, the 3rd party and i discussed the accelerator problem that was being reported in the news and on many internet websites. he assured me that there was not a problem. he also told me that the corolla had never in its entire history been the subject of a recall. i later found out this to be untrue. there is also a problem with the steering on this car. it wanders at higher speeds and will not hold a straight line. this is a serious and dangerous defect, especially for a 60-year old woman. you cannot take your eye off the road even for a split second or you may find yourself in the next lane or running off the road. this is highly unacceptable. according to the news, this steering defect has been reported to toyota on many occasions. my ex wife is on disability. she had major heart surgery in february, 2009. she had two heart valves replaced, two heart artery by-passes and had to have a graft on her heart aorta. she has many other disabilities to deal with. this was her first new car in 13 years. she previously drove a toyota tercel for 13 years - a good car. together, we have owned a camry, tercel, tundra, tacoma and now this corolla. but i can assure you that this will be the last toyota i will ever buy. toyota has know about these defects but still continued to sell them to the public. the word that comes to mind is fraud. i am at a loss as what to do. i am also on disability and cannot afford to replace this car for her and i worry each day that she has to drive this car. please respond in writing how you plan to address this situation. as each day passes, the chance of her being involved in an accident grows greater. you will receive a copy of this letter by certified mail. *tr

I also have a new 2010 corolla bought in lexington ky three weeks ago. 3 days before the recall on the acceleration pedals were announced. i have yet to hear from the dealer about fixing the issue. although today i wanted to report a steering issue with the car. it does indeed have difficulty staying in a lane of traffic. the car will veer to the left or right of the lane unexpectedly and without warning. it is similar to a gust of wind pushing the car even if no wind is blowing. i had taken it to the dealership for testing and the service guy told me it's just how the steering is made in these autos. it is a way for the powerful control you have going around curves and turns in the road impacts the straight highway driving. i have run off the road on my passenger side already. you do have to drive as if you are always on ice or water, gripping both hands on the wheel at all times; while praying the car will stop!!! *tr

I would like to report a technical problem with toyota corolla le 2010, purchased on august 10, 2009 at a dealership: world toyota, 5800 peachtree industrial blvd, atlanta, ga, 30341, usa. the technical problem relates to electric power steering system which compromises stability of the car during driving. namely, the car does not follow its track and spontaneously steers left or right. as a result of this constant pulling, the driver needs to firmly hold the steering wheel, but even then, it is impossible to control the car to keep it perfectly in track. the car feels even more unstable and pulls from side to side even more prominently when driving in full traffic on highway at a speed higher than 40 mph, such as atlanta, ga, where i live. i first noticed the problem when test driving the vehicle on august 10, 2009, but a sales representative at world toyota suggested that this was due to the electric steering and told me i needed to get used to it. despite this problem, i still decided to buy the car. because the car

My 2010 toyota corolla drifted from lane while driving. i was able to get back into the correct lane, but it drifted back out of lane and i had to reduce speed to properly correct the situation and avoid side-swiping a vehicle. this has happened a couple of times as i drive to work on a major highway. *tr

I was making a routine turn and lost control of steering. it only happened the one time, police report said car rolled two or three times, total loss to car and injury to driver. i don't remember exactly the cause other than i lost control. can't say any of the recalls did or did not cause the accident. my primary complaint is that i paid for front and side airbags, and none deployed on a car that rolled two or three times. why am i paying for equipment that is not effective? if a car rolls over at minimum the side airbags should have deployed. i would also think this would trigger the other air bags. with all the recalls how would we know if any of these contributed to the crash? i understand the rollover rating applies to the stability of the car, but rating the safety in a rollover accident should also be rated. why don't air bags deploy automatically when car hits sides or the roof? we paid for safety and reliability of the toyota, but it appears that the extra money is wasted. *tr

Steering on 2010 toyota corolla is vague, resulting in difficulty in maintaining lane when driving over 45 mph. constant correction is required. suggest looking at differences between this vehicle and 2009 pontiac vibe (which we also own, and is built on same platform) which does not exhibit same degree of driving difficulty. *tr

My new toyota corolla 2010 - when driving on the highway (60+ mph), the vehicle will all of a sudden start to wander back and forth in the lane, for a few hundred yards. then as quickly as it started, it stops. the wandering has almost created 4 collisions so far. this needs to be looked at before someone gets seriously hurt, as these problems are happening at hi speeds on the highways. *tr

We have a new 2010 toyota corolla with about 9,000 miles on it. the steering on this car is strange making it unsafe-- it is difficult to keep it in a steady/smooth line when driving on the highway at 55 mph or greater -- you need to make constant minute corrective movements to the steering wheel. at times it seems to drift on it's own left and right - like it's being blown around by a gust of wind - but the wind isn't blowing! *tr

My daughter was driving her new corolla (2010) home from college in december 2009. when she got home she was extremely upset and told me that she had encountered a steering problem with the car on her way home -- she couldn't keep the car centered on the highway as the car kept moving to the left and right. about two weeks later (december 2009) i was driving the car at about 65 mph down the highway and could not keep the car on center. it felt like i was caught in a terrible crosswind, moving me from left to right as i tried to stay on center. i ended up having to keep both hands on the steering wheel just to maintain control of the car. it was the same problem my daughter had experienced. in my 30 years of driving i have never had an experience like that before. it does not appear to be a problem at lower speeds just highway speeds and, to date, this problem has only happened those two times. *tr

The steering in my 2010 toyota corolla s is hard to control and, i feel unsafe, at highway speeds. the car wanders all over the road, requiring constant correction. however, often minor corrections fail to have any effect, and major corrections result in overcorrection, often making the car leave the lane. toyota claims this is just the nature of its electric steering. i disagree. i no longer drive my car (brand new, mind you... fewer than 2,000 miles) on the highway. the problem isn't present at city speeds. *tr

The electric power steering in my 2010 toyota corolla is very erratic and unstable at speeds of 40 mph and above. it becomes much worse when the wind is blowing. i have had a toyota dealer inspect the vehicle and they claimed that they found nothing wrong. i leased the vehicle in december 2009 and the problem has never gone away. yesterday, i reported the problem to the toyota customer experience center. they told me to check the tire air pressure (which i do at least monthly), check the shocks absorbers (which i can not do), and then have another toyota dealer inspect the car again. *tr

I bought a new 2010 toyota corolla s and realized that i can't control the steering at speeds over 50mph. this problem was noted, to my salesman, the same day i purchased the car. my whole family, including myself, made a living selling cars. i've driven in many different cars and know when something isn't right. the corolla's steering is dangerous and unsafe to be on the road. the dealership service manager even noted that there is a steering issue, but toyota doesn't have a fix. i talked to a representative at toyota's corporate office, but he told me they can't help until their is a problem. when i drive on the express way the car's steering is unpredictable, unsafe, and defective. i'm forced to drive this car because it's my only means of transportation. *tr

I recently purchased a 2010 corolla on february 3, 2010. i was driving down the road tonight from work and my car started drifting to the left. it was extremely hard for me to stay in the proper lane. it appears if the car was drifting by itself, and i was on the verge of losing control. by researching how to report this problem i noticed there were many complaints on this same situation. toyota is putting may lives into danger, this issue needs to be investigated immediately. what are my options regarding this issue? is returning/exchanging this car a possibility at this time due to the fact i have only owned this vehicle a week? i feel very unsafe driving this vehicle. my family is in extreme risk, i would like someone to call me immediately regarding this situation. *tr

Bought my new 2010 corolla s on dec. 28th, 2009; noticed how the steering was odd, but thought it was my imagination. it seems to drift on it's own left and right - like it's being blown around by a gust of wind - but the wind isn't blowing! this happens every time i drive the car. each time it does this veering maneuver i look at the surrounding trees to see if they are being blown too - but they are not. i have just over 1,000 miles on this vehicle and i feel like i've been scammed by toyota. this is my first official complaint and i will call the dealership tomorrow. *tr

2010 toyota corolla, steering problems. car feels like it is out of alignment when traveling at highway speeds and veers sharply when braking, at any speed, or if car goes over a bump in the road, at any speed. intermittent rattling noise coming from steering column. have taken car to dealership 6 times but am told they cannot duplicate the problem. problem is continuous.. also intermittent rattling noise coming from front drivers wheel area when traveling on rough roads and when braking. toyota dealership also cannot duplicate the problem. steering problems began as soon as i purchased the car and have continued ever since. underbody rattle began jan 1, 2010 and is intermittent. car does not feel safe when driving at highway speeds.. am told by toyota that car is perfectly safe to drive... i am not convinced. *tr

We have a new 2010 toyota corolla with about 3,000 miles on it. the steering on this car is strange -- it has little to no road feedback and seems to have dead spots in it -- you have to give it more effort to get pass these. the result is that it is difficult to keep it in a steady/smooth line when driving on the highway -- you need to make constant corrective movements to the steering wheel. the fact that there is no road feel/feedback contributes to this problem. while i need to enter a date to proceed with this complaint form, this steering issue occurs at all times since we have owned the car. we also have a 2002 toyota avalon -- and its steering and road feel is great. *tr

I bought a 2010 corolla on january 15, 2010. i am not pleased with the way it steers. at first, i attributed it to being a new car as everything has to be broken in. however, after nearly 4 weeks, it's still the same. the car is very hard to drive in a straight line. the steering wheel seems extremely tight. the least little thing will cause the car to veer to the right or left. it requires excessive grip on the wheel. it's like fighting wind all the time. and when the wind is blowing, it's very difficult to handle. is this situation being reported by other corolla owners? and if so, will the issue be investigated? my daughter is the primary driver of this vehicle and she says she experiences the same issue. we've not experienced any accidents or incidents, yet! it's a scary situation. *tr

I was just reading this article on msnbc about 2010 corollas (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35314540/ns/business-autos/) and yes! i have had this happen to me as well. the car veers to the left and right, and does make it difficult to stay in the lane. it doesn't occur all the time however. i haven't noticed if it only occurs going over a certain speed, or how to reproduce on a consistent basis. all i know, is that it is most definitely a problem! *tr

 1) 2010 toyota corolla sport steering is non-responsive and lacks any feedback or on-center feel. car is very difficult to keep on track, especially on the highway, and requires constant correction to stay in the lane. steering wheel does not return to center when turning at higher (>35mph) speeds. 2) the condition is always present. 3) car was brought to the dealer and was re-aligned after 500 miles. condition changed very little and is still present. *tr

I bought my 2010 corollas on jan 13th. when i drove it home for the first time, i found it was very hard to keep it in the center of the lane at highway speed. i had to keep adjusting my steering wheel. i took it back to the dealer two days later. they made some adjust and it is not that bad now, but the problem still exists. i think this problem is more serious than the gas pedal problem, because this affect driving immediately and directly. toyota says that this is how eps is designed, and we have to adapt ourselves. but no matter how the steering system is designed, moving straight forward should not be an issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2010 toyota corolla. she stated that while driving approximately 70 mph the steering wheel exhibits a jerking motion. the failure occurs every time the vehicle is driven. the contact stated that after 24 hours they could not duplicate the failure. she has had two other people drive the vehicle who confirmed that they also experienced the steering wheel malfunction. there have been no repairs done to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 260 and the current mileage was 1559.

I recentle purchased a new 2010 corolla. like others, it seemed to drive fine on a test drive. the first time my wife drove it on the highway her arms were tired after 25 miles trying to keep it straight. i've since driven it many times in different conditions and it veers all over the road. i took it back and the dealer said it was within specs, but they tweeked it to the limit. it didn't help. having to concentrate so hard on keeping this car in a straight line may keep a person from avoiding another type of hazard or dangerous situation. dealer refuses to recognize a problem, however two employees (one salesman and one tech) told me they noticed the same thing on other corollas. *cn

We purchased a 2010 toyota corolla in sep 2009. the day after we purchased the vehicle we noticed the eps system was very erratic, causing constant corrections. this is more noticeable at highway speeds, therefore on the test drive, we didn't realize the extent of the problem. the car has been taken back to the dealer three times with no resolution. we have contacted toyota with the problem and their response was the operation of the vehicle is within design specifications. this is a very dangerous situation. toyota designed and manufactured a vehicle with a steering system that is unstable, distracting and unsafe. for a company that advertises safety and reliability, i would think they would be responsive to so many safety concerns with the corolla's electronic power steering system. even the technicians agree there is a problem with the design. we would like to see some resolution for this problem before someone is fatally injured. *tr

My 2010 toyota corolla is unsafe, because of its steering mechanism. the car stability is unsafe at highway speeds, because it drives all over the road. it feels like i'm driving on black ice ,constantly, trying to compensate for the over steer. this problem occurs everytime drive on the highway. this will cause a accident if i continue to drive this car. i took my car to the dealership only to hear them say that the car is within spec. *tr

Bought 2010 corolla on 11/21/09 with 6 miles. upon driving home, i noticed the steering wheel is not centered, but slightly crooked to the left. when we hop into the fwy and doing 50mph+, the vehicle starts to drift left and right. i had to make small corrections by steering it left and right to make the car drives straight. my girlfriend drove the vehicle yesterday and upon making a left curve on the freeway doing 60mph, the steering was not fully responsive. she veered one lane to the right instead! we were lucky that the fwy was empty at that moment. i feel that there is a steering problem that makes this vehicle dangerous to drive. *tr

Own a 2010 toyota corolla s vehicle and the steering is horrible at highway speeds. the vehicle tracks from left to right with the slightest compensation causing the vehicle to almost jerk in the compensated direction. this vehicles steering is dangerous and i have several friends that are complaining of the same issue. i contacted my dealers service rep and was basically told this is normal with a chuckle. my vehicle now has 2000 miles on it almost all interstate miles. toyota needs to fix this issue. i will be pressing my dealer to buy this vehicle back. *tr

2010 toyota corolla s drifts to the left and right at speeds above 40 mph making car require constant adjustment to stay in lane. longer trips are exhausting as the car has to be actively steered at all times to keep from wandering out of the lane. steering feels loose and wheel needs to be turned more than 1/6 of a turn to correct vehicle. *tr

I have a 2010 corolla which i bought just a few weeks ago and i have been having problems with the steering from the start. when you are at freeway speeds it does not kept a straight line, it wanders to left and the right needing correction all of the time. it is very tiring and seems very dangerous. it talked to the dealer and toyota to report the problem, they said it is a normal driving condition at this time, not sure what this means. i hope they fix this soon or i hope to sell it back to toyota. i am very disappointed that is was not addressed in the 2009 model. *tr

I've driven this 2010 toyota corolla for less than 500 miles and i started to noticed that it's very hard to keep the car from veering or drifting to the left . drifting is more noticeable when car reaches a speed of 40mph or more. i took it to the dealer for service and according to the dealer the car is aligned to specification by toyota. i hope this car eps (electric power steering) get recall soon before it causes accidents across the nation. *tr
