Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles have the possibility that the recess retains a rubber seal ring, which is located at the end of the cylinder body, and may be corroded due to an improper washing process.
Consequence SummaryIn this condition, brake fluid may leak from the seal, or a small amount of air may enter the master cylinder, which could lead to an increase of vehicle stopping distance.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the brake master cylinder and, if necessary, replace the brake master cylinder and booster. the recall began on november 29, 2004. owners should contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371.

Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. due to a unique combination of conditions which consist of cold ambient temperatures, load applied from air conditioner and other electrical devices, and immediately after starting the engine, there is a possibility that the vacuum in the intake manifold could be insufficient for the brake booster.
Consequence SummaryWhen the brake is applied under this combination of conditions, vacuum assist to the brakes would decrease, and the increased pedal pressure required could lead to an increase in vehicle stopping distance.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the brake booster and front brake pads. owner notification began october 29, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

This is not related to a specific incident, but i feel i should register a complaint about the brakes on the 2000 toyota echo. the stopping distance required seems excessive to me, and i feel that it would be nearly impossible to ever cause the car to skid (lock up the wheels) using the breaks if you slammed them on in an emergency despite the car not having anti-lock breaks. all recalls have been done on my car as far as i know. there was one recall which involved them replacing the break booster - i noticed dramatically improved breaking performance immediately after this recall - however after about a year maybe, the car returned to its poor breaking performance. new break pads and shoes, and a brake fluid change did not fix the problem. i called toyota a while ago to ask about this, and all they could tell me was that my car already had the break recall done many years ago and that there was no new recall. it may be worth mentioning that i also have a 2001 toyota echo which does not have the same problem - so i definitely can tell the difference and i know that stopping distance is much worse on my 2000 vehicle. *tr

On 1 oct 2001 jessica took car to liberty toyota for grinding noise. advised brakes were so bad she could not drive away and brakes, front and rear replaced. less than one month later we receive ssc -10l - 2000 my echo brake booster safety recall notice that brake booster and front brake pads will be replaced at no cost to client. when we asked about reimbursement for brakes installed on 2 oct 01 advised to call toyota usa.. call to toyota usa on 12 nov opened case #200111120298 who said that toyota would not reimburse previous bill for brakes. as a 3-car toyota family i find this to be unfair since we had no choice to replace brakes due to current situation and did question why this was occuring. brakes previously replaced with new and now again at 28,878 miles. garage looked at other toyota echos in the local area. this is the only one currently being maintained in local area. feel toyota usa owes jessica full reimbursement for brakes replaced on two seperate occassions as defect is now substantiated with recall and identified as related to motor vehicle safety.

I own a 2000 toyota echo. i received a safety recall designated: ssc 40k - 2000 model year celica and echo brake master cylinder inspection safety recall notice. i took the car to oxmoor toyota in louisville, ky but i was told that the recall notice would not be honored unless i agreed to give up my rights to judicial remedies in favor of arbitration. i refused to do so and oxmoor toyota refused to honor the recall notice. oxmoor toyota is located at 8107 shelbyville road, louisville, ky 40222. i believe that this refusal violates the spirit of the recall program and effectively denies me the right to have the recall performed. please advise me regarding nhtsa's position on this matter. i appreciate you help. benjamin l. gardner, 1402 brush jump lane, goshen, ky 40026 (502)585-3100. *nm
