The toyota fj cruiser develops bulges in the engine bay over time with normal driving. these are in the crumple zones and eventually rip. toyota fails to fix this to spite having hundreds of documented cases. mine is one of them. http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/toyota-fj-cruiser-polls/37556-do-you-have-inner-fender-bulges-cracking.html. *tr

2007 fj cruiser has a crack on the inner fender, also referred to as an engine bay body rip. this vehicle has not been in an accident. the crack was noticed at around 39,500 miles, but may have been there earlier. no corrective parts have been installed. *tr

My complaint has to do with the paint! i have repeatedly gone into toyota to have them deal with this chipping problem. they have fixed chips only on the uprights beside the window. the chipping is occurring on all parts of the vehicle, on flat surfaces such as the hood and right and left sides. to date i have over 200 chips with 60,000 km - i have over 300,000 km on a 1997 ford that has been driven in the same conditions that has 1/20 the chips. there is a problem with the maroon paint on this fj cruiser. it is not going away and it appears to be a problem with the bond between the paint and the primer as best i can tell. *tr

My 2007 toyota fj cruiser developed two, under the hood, wheel well/inner fender cracks, at the crumple dimples. the vehicle exhibited the body cracks at 18,000 miles. each crack, one on the left and right, directly above each upper wheel well, where attached to the inner fender, are about 4 long and 1/16-1/8 wide. i took the truck to toyota where, without batting an eye, sent the truck to a body shop and replaced both the left and right inner fender assembly. this was a very major repair, costing toyota about $8k in materials and labor. i am very concerned that this problem will reappear, after my warranty expires at 36,000 miles. i do not sport off-road this truck. *tr

Paint failure is immediate. vehicle is a toyota 2007 fj cruiser. car was parked under mesquite tree for shade. tree sap from tree caused paint to immediately bubble and crack and come off. literally everywhere drop hits body and bumper is damaged, approximately 50 spots or more. paint releases completely to primer. *tr

Inner fender aprons have cracked in under 20-k miles. this requires extensive repair dismantling the entire front end and removal of the dash. *tr i will be left with the equivalent of a vehicle that has suffered a serious front end collision, complete with accelerated rust in weld areas, specifically around the firewall. a complete buy-back should be the remedy for such a serious & significant design flaw that toyota should have been aware of since the same failures occurred on the australia sold prado (which uses the same platform as the american fj cruiser). *tr

2007 toyota fj cruiser with door panel fender failure. consumer states both the passenger and drivers side front fenders have bulges and cracks approximately 3-4 inches long in the upper portion of the inner fender. they are located approximately 8 inches from the firewall on the passenger side and 6 inches from the firewall on the drivers side.*kb

Within 6 months after purchasing my voodoo blue 2007 fj cruiser, i began noticing random paint chipping on the body of my vehicle. i have never put my car through a car wash, nor has it ever been off-roaded. i brought this to the attention of my sales rep at the toyota dealership where i purchased it and he proceeded to ask me if i had ever driven through any construction sites, which i had not. he then referred me to a toyota paint specialist who then proceeded to tell me that this is very common because lead is no longer an ingredient in the paint, which is causing it to become very brittle. since i am leasing the car i was concerned that i would be charged at lease termination for this but was assured by the specialist that this was considered normal wear and tear on the car. he suggested that i purchase touch-up paint and apply as needed. however, it has now been well over a year and the paint not only continues to chip further, but i've begun to notice a few small areas where there is also corrosion developing. at this point i plan to bring the truck back in to get something in writing concerning this problem and liability. i do not want to get screwed at the end of my lease term. i have never heard of paint chipping in this way, especially not on a new vehicle. i even purchased a 2007 prius recently and have had no issues whatsoever with the paint on that vehicle and it is driven under the same conditions as the fj - city and highway only. *tr

The inner fenderwell apron crush zones are buckling under normal driving conditions - it appears the frame has too much flex and is causing the weak spot in the inner fenderwell to break. the buckling on the passenger side has also shifted the fender backward causing a pinch at the hood corner and the front edge of the door. i am no longer able to open the door. i am concerned that because this is a safety related area of the body that this issue might impact the structural integrity of the vehicle in an accident, or even under normal operating conditions. the vehicle will be taken to my local dealer this week. i am aware of at least 150 other similar vehicles with various stages of this identical problem, some which have also been inspected by various toyota personnel. information about this issue has been posted to an on-line forum to gather additional data - www.fjcruiserforums.com - where pictures and descriptions of the vehicles, equipment, and build date / mileage have been gathered. *tr

Another fender bulge issue. the bulge started at 30k miles. i'm at 90k miles now and the passenger side bulge has now become a tear. the drivers side has also become a tear. i believe this issue is very common on the fj cruisers built in 2007. this issue was attended to on the newer models. the crumple zones is where these tears appear and i am very concerned for the safety of myself and my passengers. my vehicle is not the first this has happened to and it will not be the last until toyota recognizes this as an epic failure on their part. i cannot understand how a vehicle that has 90k miles still has the stock battery and brake pads but has two major tears in the body! *tr

Informed via the internet about possible problem, with at this time unknown cause, december 2006. inner front fender ripping and bulging of fender support panels leading eventually to jamming of front doors while in the closed position when front fenders drop down to a lower position on frame blocking same. this appears to be occuring to aproximately 20% of the older vehicles with build dates of 06', 07' & 08' with mileage from 10,000 to 75,000. information gathered from fj cruiser forum via the internet and web research. vehicle has been taken to dealer for inspection and am awaiting a response. damage was not discovered until 60600 miles when vehicle was being inspected after detailing, mileage of damage occurence is uknown. dealer inspected vehicle and took pictures at their location.

Left section of the hood of a 2007 toyota fj cruiser flew off while driving on the highway, causing cars to swerve. no wrecks. i took the car to a body shop and they said those panel fly off all the time because they are not affixed in place. no screws, glue, or nails. nothing. very dangerous. could have killed families traveling along the highway for summer vacations.

I have discovered bulging and cracking issues in the engine bay inner fender aprons at the location of the crumple safety zones. toyota dealer and customer service personnel are aware of the issue but will not escalate my complaint or allow me to speak with a supervisor. further investigation shows that there is a high amount of owners experiencing some bulging and cracking issues with 2007 and some early 2008 models. the bulges and cracks in the inner fenders seem to be attributed to a toyota design flaw through certain vin numbers. some speculation was made that aftermarket steel bumpers had put extra weight and stress on the fenders, causing them to crack, but hundreds of fj's equipped with aftermarket bumpers suffered no damage. it is rumored that toyota addressed the problem in most 2008 models by boxing the inner fender and adding a third layer of metal and a new bolt inside the fender. this is a huge safety concern as it negates the absorptive properties of the frontal crumple zone, in addition to the obvious structural problems.

I have a 2007 toyota fj cruiser and the front inner fender are bulging and tearing at the crumple zone. i've contacted riverside auto where i bought it brand new and they basically told me there's nothing they will do to fix the issue, toyota has redesigned the inner fender 3 times so they know there is a problem but refuse to acknowledge it. *tr

My 2007 toyota fj cruiser has a design flaw in it's front fenders. the inner fenders bulge and tear which causes the fenders to bind on the doors, etc. the bulges and tears are in the crumple' areas of the inner fenders designed to buckle during a crash. this defect weakens an area that should be intact . *tr

My inner fenderwells have cracked all the way through at the crumple zones. i have mentioned this to toyota, and they say it is because of my aftermarket bumper even though hundreds of documented cases have been found on stock fj cruisers of same year as mine. i feel this issue negates the strength of the fenders and would not react favorably in a crash. *tr

The inner fender wells on my 2007 toyota fj cruiser are bulging on both the drivers side and passenger side. definitely seems to be a defect in design due to possible inability of vehicle to handle the flexing, etc. it is now affecting my doors and basic alignment of vehicle. gaps are forming where there shouldn't be gaps, etc. i just got my tires balanced and aligned and the tires are wearing funny just 2 months after having work done especially on the drivers side where the larger bulge is. the bulge is noticeably getting larger with time and will eventually crack. i have friends that have the same problem, started with bulges and now their inner fender wells are cracked. toyota will not admit to having knowledge of this problem and yet every year the vehicle has been put into production the inner fender wells have been improved and reinforced...but even those are now failing and bulging. toyota is aware of this and blaming it on offroad use or aftermarket parts....but its happening across the board on all or most fj's. work/warranty work is being denied. we are now left with a vehicle that will most likely fall apart or even worse...will affect us in an auto accident...since its related to the crumple zone and is showing weakness. please help us and do something about it for us. *tr

I have a 2007 trd fj cruiser with the 100,000 mile warranty on it. at 12,000 miles i noticed a fender bulge on the passenger side of the inner fender under the hood. i have never taken the car offroading and already, at 12,000 miles have a fender bulge. this design flaw can greatly affect the cars integrity and life span. the latest quote on a fix from a toyota dealer was $4,700. many people are experiencing this type of bulge or crack in their inner fenders and it can be a huge problem if you get into a car accident and the crunch zone already has a crack in it. this is a widespread problem that needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt. *tr

There is a problem with the inner fender of the toyota fj cruiser. my truck has 34k miles and i have noticed a large bulge in the drivers side inner fender, in the crumple zone. the passenger side is also slightly bulged. i have seen in other fj cruisers how these bulges will slowly crack and cause the fender to tear. as this problem develops in a designed crumple zone, i am concerned that toyota does not seem to have a solution, or even acknowledge that there is a problem. *tr

I have a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. i have the truck lifted with a dealership approved lift kit, and dealership approved tires. i have about 50k miles on it, and i just noticed the inner fender inside the engine compartment on the drivers side began to bulge out towards the engine. i took it into toyota and they one sales rep says i must of had an accident to cause this, i have not! another rep says he has heard of this issue but has never seen it before. they are going to have an engineer come and take a look at it. i have done my own research and have found that toyota has since redesigned this section now 3 times but are still claiming it to be user fault. i have 127 other people that have now claimed this issue many of which have stock vehicles and have never been off road or had the suspension or tires max out. this bulge leads to cracks right in the crumple zone of the engine compartment. which could seriously affect how the vehicle reacts to an accident and cause further harm to its occupants. *tr

Toyota fj cruiser 2007: inner fender rails / engine bay (structural vehicle body panel) bulges and cracks under regular operation condition. after an first replacement at ~ 5000mi, the new parts cracked again at ~ 11000mi. toyota refuses to repair that structural defect under warranty, which is a ~ $10000 repair. this concern has been reported under a significant number of fj cruiser owners (see fj cruiser forum engine bay rips). *tr

Inside the engine compartment there is deformation of the bodywork (bulges). these are aligned with the dimples designed to control the crush of the front structure under impact. the bulges began to be noticeable when the vehicle was about 1 year old and had about 15,000 miles. this is a common problem with this vehicle, and usually leads to tears in the bodywork on the inside of the front fenders. *tr

Vehicle like others is starting to experience buldging on the inner fender aprons. mine have not developed to cracks like so many others but appears to be in its infancy since it is buldging. i was made aware of the complaint after browsing this database. upon further research i found fjcruiserforums.com where 155+ other people have experienced the same problem! i have not taken the vehicle to the dealer as i have heard horror stories and the problem has not been remedied. i am very concerned about the structural integrity of the front in under normal driving conditions and especially concerned about the vehicles crash rating and how it has been affected. it appears to be buldging at two crumple zones on the uni body. no other apparent buldges, rips, or deformities anywhere else. the vehicle has never been in an impact situation greater than a shopping cart at the super market rolling into my vehicle. this appears to be a natural occurring problem which the toyota designers did not take into consideration when building the vehicle. the front end does not appear to be able to support its own weight. *tr

Rips and bulges appeared on the inside of the engine bay. they are appeareing in a designated crumple zone .. which makes me fear for my safety.. it has been documented by hundreds of other toyota fj cruiser owners as well..... there were no events leading to this. toyota has not aknowledged the problem in any way.

Fatigue stress in the engine bay sheet metal located in safety crumple zone areas. events leading up to failure are anyone's guess. normal day to day and moderate off-road driving are the only conditions experience by the vehicle... no collision or accident incidents. toyota has agreed to cover the replacement of the part under warranty but has given no explanation as to how the failure is occurring to vehicles on a national level, how the failure will be handled after the warranty period and provided no recourse for what is bound to be a dramatic drop in resale value due to the fixing of the vehicle (more than likely the extent of the repair will be akin to fixing a wrecked vehicle. front end disassembly, welding, cutting, etc.) *tr

2007 fj cruiser body panels inside engine bay are bulging and subsequently ripping apart for no apparent reason. toyota has not issued a public statement on this matter. fixes for my vehicle include pulling the engine to replace the panels. however, the underlying problem that causes the ripping has not been identified or addressed. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. the contact noticed a curvature in the inner fender apron of the vehicle. a mechanic stated that the inner fender apron crush zones were ripping and cracking under normal driving conditions and the frame contained an excess of flexibility. the dealer found no failures and no repairs were made. the current and failure mileages were 33,952.

Inside fender panel ripping on either side of 2007 toyota fjc mine and others, can see discussion online at http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/problems-dealer-service/33440-engine-bay-body-rips.html seems that toota knows of the problem and is offering a fix not proven to work, and is only covering till the 30,000 mile warranty is up, after that it is your problem, even though it seems to be a problem many vehicles have.

To whom it may concern, i am the owner of a toyota fj cruiser 2007. after ~3500 miles, i discovered cracks in the body frame (front inner fender rails - engine bay). i did address this issue to toyota, who voided the warranty on the vehicle due to signs of impact, namely scratches on the under body. i do not concur with this statement, since scratches can not be related to impact strength. i use this vehicle for off road, which does yield to scratches in the body. i have never experienced any impact. internet research on fj cruiser forums shows that this becomes a very common phenomenon and appears to be a design flaw in the front end of the fj cruiser. i am concerned that due to the cracks in the body (crash zone), the safety of the vehicle is negatively affected. i would be able to provide you a very detailed report on the findings, as well as with the links to a number of fj cruiser owners facing the same problem. i'm looking forward to your response and appreciate your support in this matter! *jb

I have an 07 toyota fj cruiser & i checked out my inner fender and saw 2 cracks after reading an online forum complaint board about this issue. my good friend who also has an 07 fj cruiser has the same exact problem as well. there are cracks on both sides of my inner fender. my passenger side has a bulge around the crack as well. my wife drives our small children (infants) around and i am very concerned. i read many places this is a design flaw by toyota. please help as this is a major safety issue and should never crack as it has. *tr
