PE05029TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.05/31/200510/12/2005ENGINE STALLING
Odi opened pe05-029 based on 33 reports of alleged gasoline engine stalling on the subject vehicles.the subject vehicles are gasoline/ electric hybrid vehicles that can be operated in gasoline or electric modes, or a combination of both depending on the power demand.all reports allege that the gasoline engine shut down suddenly without warning.some of the complainants reported that the vehicle continued to operate using the electric mode for a period of time after the gas engine stalled and some reported that the vehicle shut down at the same time that they felt the gas engine stalled.some consumers reported that they were able to restart the vehicle either immediately or after allowing the vehicle sit for a short time, whereas others reported that they had their vehicle towed.during pe05-029, additional failure data was identified as noted in the failure report summary above.the complaint data represents incidents where engine stalling was alleged or where the vehicle was alleged to have one of the various conditions that causes the gas engine to stall.in its august 26, 2005 response to odi's information request, toyota identified various conditions that could cause the subject vehicles to experience a gas engine stall.if this happens, the driver is alerted by an audible sound and various warning lights.the vehicle will continue to operate in the electric mode and the electrically-powered brake and steering operation will continue to function normally. analysis of the warranty data indicated that over 97% of vehicles experiencing a gas engine stall resulted from an issue with the program logic in the electronic control module (ecm) system, which may cause the ecm system to not start the gas engine when required.as a result, the vehicle will enter the limited operation mode described above.the majority of the odi complaints also indicated that the driver experienced this condition in conjunction with the engine stall. during october 2005, toyota informed odi that it would initiate a special service campaign (ssc) to reprogram the ecm software on approximately 75,000 my 2004 and early 2005 subject vehicles to address the gas engine stalling condition.during this ssc, dealers will also apply special dielectric grease to a transaxle connector to prevent water intrusion which may also cause similar limited operation conditions.based on odi's analysis, this remedy should address most of the incidents resulting in a limited operation mode.given these circumstances, further use of the agency resources in this matter does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

I started up the car this morning, put it into reverse, and a second or two later, it shifted itself into neutral. the shift lever felt like there was more resistance to it than usual. this happened several times and also happened when i tried to put the car into drive. after about 15 minutes of turning the car on and off and trying to shift several times, the car finally stayed in gear. the problem is the same as described in this thread: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/62-prius-forum/343977-08-prius-wont-stay-gear.html, with the only difference being that it was a rather cold day (0 degrees f) while most of the posts in the thread mention the problem occurring on a hot day. while the malfunction on my car was problematic but not life-threatening, i am concerned that the car could shift itself into neutral while i am driving (as described by several posters in the above thread), which would be a dangerous situation.

The electronic(?) shift mechanism in the car malfunctions/does not stay engaged in temperatures approximately 28 degrees fareheit & below when car has sat idle for periods of time. the night of this incident i was returning from a business trip where my car had been sitting out in the weather for approximately 28-30 hours. the temperature this particular day was 9 degrees; however, i have had this happen in the past with temperatures ranging into the mid to upper 20's. {due to our mild winter last year i don't recall it happening much if at all-- it did however occur the winter year prior [2010-2011] and i reported it to my toyota dealer. they looked at me and told me they were unaware of any such problem.} when i position my shift select from the center position & select either drive or reverse, the car transmission disengages upon pressing the gas. the other night i had previously mentioned i had to physically hold the drive selector in the d/drive position for 28 minutes before the selector remained engaged. (in past incidents i have had to hold the selector in position from 5-10 minutes- the problem seems to get worse in rlation to lower temps. are there any other reports of such a problem?

Since about the fall of last year or so, we've been noticing that the headlights have been going off intermittently. the right went out and then came back on. then another time the left went out and came back on. i've read about this occurring on many other prius' and that there was a class action suit? anyway, i need to figure out how to get this fixed as it is a serious safety issue. *tr

My prius exhibits removal of electrical and engine power to the front wheels during acceleration when turning sharply right or left on a slippery surface. this occurs as soon as one of the front wheel slips. ordinarily this is only a minor aggravation, and easing on the throttle usually restores power but in icing conditions it's dangerous. there are conditions where i could not move the car when crossing a small berm of snow (3 inches high where one wheel had significantly less traction than the other. i had to be pushed over it. it appears to be a software issue, but my local toyota dealer claims they never heard of it. *tr

I am sure that you won't believe this is true. on oct 25th 2012, i got home and turned off the car after work. i took the bag contained the key and left in the family room which is about 40 feet away from garage. after the dinner, i went to garage to throw trash. i smelled gas and heard music and car engine was on. suddenly, it reminds me, in the morning when i turn off the car and left, the car started by itself and all electronic system was re-set. i specifically paid attention to turning off the car and locking the door in the evening because of what happened in the morning. the car was turned on by itself again and had been running in the garage for more than 2.5 hrs based on the clock re-set information. i could not turn it off and the car showed error message that the key was not in the car. of course, since the key was in the family room at that time. i brought the key in the car and still could not turn it off. i tried to insert the key and still no luck. i called aaa and they sent a technician and a toll truck to my house. he could not turn off either initially and eventually turned it off after move the wheel, step on breaks really hard and shook the car. i sent the car to toyota dealer right away. the service center could not identify any issue and toyota refuse to acknowledge there is anything wrong with the car. i was scared and also glad that i went garage to throw garbage today. otherwise, i don't know what is going to happen! we have furnace with igniter light on in the garage. the house can be on fire with a reason no one will expect and believe! the carbon monoxide could filled the garage and emerge in the house! i called in the customer care center (case # 1209260311) and they told me there is anything they can do about it. what is really upset me is that toyota does not even acknowledge there is anything wrong with the car!

While driving the vehicle, the sun visor on the drivers side flips down, blocking the drivers view. the visor can be returned to the up (out of the way) position. however it repeatedly and spontaneously slips down, both blocking the drivers view and creating a constant distraction for the driver. this is dangerous and a severe driving hazard.

After only about 3 years use, the rubber cover on the hatch release handle (the exterior handle of the rear hatch) of our 2007 toyota prius, melted into a sticky tarry black rubbery gooey mess. i can best describe it as being a viscous black glob like roofing tar. to open the hatch, you have to touch this black goo each time, which makes it difficult to operate the hatch release. we believe this melting process started at about the 2 yr. mark. i thought that this might be a singular issue, but have found that this has happened to several car owners, . toyota knows about this, and is selling the entire wiring harness for $96 plus repair costs, and has done nothing about recalling this. from a safety perspective, this means you can experience extreme difficulty opening the rear hatch (a life safety access point), and will get sticky black tar on you from the melted down rubber cover of the exterior hatch release handle. to me, this is both a serious life safety issue and a serious quality defect that toyota is opting to ignore and only fixing on vehicles with extended warranties, since the failure appears to occur at around the 3 year mark (ie after 3 years of exposure to the bright sun in north carolina for example). i am aware of the outstanding work done by nhtsa on other safety issues, including the problem with rusty frames on 02 isuzu axioms, and i find this problem to be similar in nature, so i am asking for your agency to take a look at these instances and also to inquire from toyota why they are not recalling these handles that are melting in the sun!!! it's outrageous. i think a door handle or hatch handle should be made to last more than 3 years

When starting the vehicle up, no speedohmeter display is illuminated. the display for the vehicle enviromental controls (miles per gallon/energy use) still works. along with the speedohmeter display, the rear hatchback door does not work. i tried to adjust the inside light display to see if the light level was turned off. this was not problem. i turned the light adjustment knob in both directions, and still no speedohmeter display. upon trying to turn off the engine, it will not turn off. i was able to shut the vehicle off by disconnecting the car battery in the passenger side rear hatch back area. note that because the rear hatch back door does not work, all the vehicle parts which leads to the rear battery has to be taken out from the rear seat of the vehicle. one particular time i disconnected the car battery on the black portion of the battery, and the vehicle did not shut off. i brought the vehicle to the toyota dealership several times, and because this problem happens intermittently. toyota was unable to duplicate it. however, one day when it was not working, i brought it in to them. they later claimed that it was a cold start problem to the computer that is responsible for the speedohmeter display (besides other things, rear hatch back door, cruise control, etc.). toyota claimed they found the problem on the internet, and it was not a recalled part. this particular part (computer) normally happens only in the states that are very cold.

On 7/31/11 i noticed my cruise control would not set. the light came on indicating the cruise was on, but i could not get the speed to hold. the next day, the cruise control worked. midday on 8/1/11 while parked, i shifted to the d position, but the light indicated i was in n. i shifted back and forth between r and d several times, but the light indicated n. i took my foot off the brake and the car moved backward. the light indicated n and the knob was in the d position. it did this several times. i turned the car off and back on and everything worked like it is supposed to. on 8/1/11 at approximately 10:30 p.m. i was driving home on a narrow, two-lane rural highway. on a blind curve, both of my headlights went out. i could not see anything. i tried cycling my headlights off and on and nothing happened. i applied my brakes and stopped. i opened my door to see where i was in the roadway and determined i was on the fog line on the opposite side of the road and there was a hillside less than 5' from me. i was able to drive to the shoulder on the right side of the road by using the light from my door. i was extremely lucky no cars passed by while my lights were out. i could have been killed or caused a catastrophe. i turned the car off and back on and both headlights came back on. a motorist stopped to assist. i was able to follow him to a store where a friend met me and i followed him home. during the drive home one of my headlights kept turning off. both did not go off together again. i took the car to the dealer on 8/3/11 and was told i need a new auxiliary battery and two new headlights. cost is going to be around $700. i read about a class action suit regarding 2006-2009 prius' headlights and that toyota knows there is a problem with them. i believe there should be a recall because of my harrowing experience and those of many others.

Generally speaking, thousands of prius owners complain about their radio reception to toyota to no avail (i have written the ceo 2-3 times already and had phone conversations with customer service as well as an exchange of emails) only to be told to contact the dealership - which has no way of assisting with this problem). poking around on the internet, it seems to be a grounding problem - which has now been fixed i understand in subsequent models. this points to the fact they knew it was a problem. i contend it is a safety issue if you are not able to hear your radio in case of emergency - especially in a rural area such as ours (olympic peninsula) where hearing emergency warnings while driving could be considered life and death in certain circumstances. as you will see in this website, there are plenty of people who would be interested in a class action lawsuit: http://www.soultek.com/blog/2005/11/toyota-prius-hybrid-car-radio-problems.html for more info.

At random, the car does not start. there is nothing different about events leading up to the failure from one day to the next. my neighbor has the same problem, and so did a friend of mine. aaa told me that in the winter the car is particularly prone to having trouble starting.

In december 2010, 2005 toyota prius was taken to dealer for pedal modification as part of the floor mat accelerator pedal entrapment recall. the dealer did not explain that pedal was actually being shortened by cutting off 1/4 inch at the bottom. after the recall modification was completed, accelerator pedal became stuck on after-market floor mat that had been in place in the vehicle since december 2005. dealer did not mention this possibility at the time of the recall fix. (prior to modification, vehicle owner had checked to make sure that floor mat was properly anchored and that there was no way for accelerator to become trapped.) in this case, the modification intended to prevent floor mat entrapment actually caused the pedal to become stuck.

The brakes on my 2005 prius appear not to grab immediately when i am driving over a rough surface. this has happened since i have owned the car but on an irregular basis. since it occurred generally when i was moving very slowly i didn't view it as a safety problem but a couple of times recently i have been driving over a very rough road at higher speed and the same lack of braking occurred. it is as if there is a pause before the braking system kicks in.

Momentary loss of brakes when lightly braking over a bumpy surface. it has happened throughout the 3 years i've owned this car.
01/01/2010
I drive a 2005 toyota prius. i am concerned with how the brakes operate. when i apply the brakes and hit a bump at the same time, there is what feels like a lag or release if you will in the braking of the car. it's only for about a second but is very frightening. to put it another way, when trying to brake the car and hitting a bump in the road, the brakes :fail momentarily and then re-engage. this happens for about 1/2 of a second although it feels longer. i have read other complaints about this issue and toyota responded to these complaints saying the lag is caused by the abs system kicking in. i don't understand the lag time though, it seems excessive to me not to mention dangerous. i believe the newer prius' have been recalled for a similar problem and am wondering if the 2005s will be as well.

I drive a 2005 toyota prius. my car has 26,000 miles on it; which is very low mileages. while i was on the highway, my car`s lights on the dashboard starts to flash. the brake system warning light and buzzer comes on along with the abs warning light and the malfunction indicator lamp. i had nowhere to pull aside. after two minutes the warning signs shut off so i kept driving. five minutes later, all the warning lights come on so i decide to get off the highway to take it to the knoxville toyota dealer. as i`m exiting the highway, i immediately realized that i had no breaks (when i pressed the brake pedal with my foot it automatically touched the ground)! i remembered that my dad always told me that in case of a brake emergency to pump the paddle until the breaks work. i almost crashed into another car; the exit ramp was very steep. i was going about 50 miles per hr by then; luckily i managed to stop while i kept pumping my breaks. i took it to the dealer right away. they checked my car and replaced: pump assy. water, super long life c, invertor coolant pump, sliding yoke, reflashed engine and hv ecu and shaft kit. steeri. i found my case very dangerous and my life was at risk. not only was my life at risk but as well as other individuals. i would hate for this to happen to someone else! it was scary and i felt like my life might have been over.

Braking momentarily fails after hitting a bump, pothole, or other road irregularity. this article describes the issue perfectly. http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2009/12/nhtsa-tracking-braking-loss-on-prius-hybrids/#more-17003 dealers since day of purchase have said there was nothing wrong.

I had been pulled over on several occations for faulty tail lights. this has been ongoing sence i bought the car. then my children told me of the front head lights going out for no reason. i did not believe them till the went out on me. after taking it to several toyota dealers and said that there is nothing wrong, on 09/10/2009 i filed a complaint with a monica from the nhtsa in dc. i have yet to hear anything to this date and i am afraid of a serious crash when the lights go out without knowing why. i also have a check light that has been on sence before my warranty went out and no one wants to correct the problum. i hate this car, it scares me and there are other issues and i have to date only recieved one recall and that is on the mats.

My 2005 toyota prius arbitrarily lost braking ability as i approached a ramp to enter another highway. many lights went on including the red triangle with an exclamation point. i used the emergency brake to stop the car. i have been told that the skid control unit is broken and needs to be replaced. i will need to replace this part at a cost of $2200. is this unit a safety threat?

My 2005 toyota prius has a problem when i hit a bump when i am applying the brakes. the brakes momentarly stop funtioning. i never thought much about it thinking i hit a slick spot. i was talking to anothr 2005 prius owner today who told me he had this problem, and that it is a know problem with the newer prius. i just wanted you to know it is happening with the 2005 model as well.

I have been routinely bringing my 2005 prius to a toyota dealership every 5k miles according to manufacturers suggested maintanence schedule and never had a problem reported to me. (one time the software needed to be reloaded.) on the evening of the incident that i am reporting, i had traveled on the mass turnpike and rte 495 (~38 mi) home from work (~9:30 pm) and successfully slowed and stopped my 2005 toyota prius as needed. as i got into on local roads, i suddenly lost my braking ability. fortunatly i was going slowly and was able to roll to a stop. there was a really shrill alarm and a red light showing abs (antilock brake problem)--i'll say. i tested to see if there was any braking power so that i could get the car home. if you pressed the brake to the floor--there was some residual slowing--so i crept home. aaa towed my car to toyota the next day and toyota ultimatly identified the problem as a computer problem. they replaced the 1 89540-47130 computer assembly, skid. aside from the cost ($2250), its the possibility that i could have lost my brakes on either of the two highways that i take on the way home, exit ramps, toll booths, and that i or some others could have been seriously hurt, really upsets me. and how do i know that this will not fail again? regular sevice does not check computer status. i think that you should look into computer problems with toyota and also what toyota includes in regular service. they say that they haven't seen this before, and that may be true: i have a 5 yr old prius with more than 110k miles on it and i'll bet that that is a lot of mileage for a prius. as more people drive prius's for longer times and accrue higher mileage, i would bet that toyota will see a lot more of these incidents. i think that you should be proactive and deal with this before people get hurt.

Driving at night and the head lamps on toyota pruis malfunctioned; not aware that they were off. i was on a dark winding road, heavy rain showers. was alerted by another motorist that my lights were off. got out of car, tapped the dome, one came on... i was able to drive home. happened unexpectly, no warning. very concern with my safety. they could have been an accident. checked with other pruis owners. found out, it's a widespread issue with the pruis. toyota is aware of the problem and needs to address it before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. overall the car is fine but this headlamp issue needs to be addressed from a safety perspective. there are no deaths /injury in my case but prevention is the key. thank you.

Car seizing up in 2005 prius when i go over large bumps in the road-- have experienced this problem continuously over past 2 1/2 years since i bought the car in may 2007 with 19,000 miles. i have seen reports that this problem has been reported in the 2010 prius and a very large recall is about to happen, but i just want you to be aware that i have experience the same problem in my 2005.

During a drive on us224 in ohio, my husband was driving my 2005 toyota on cruise control. after passing a vehicle, he attempted to slow down by braking but the car was still trying to accelerate. it took four iterations of pushing on the brake to finally make the car slow down. we were able to pull off of the highway and stop. during the incident, we could feel the pull of acceleration even when he was depressing the brake. if he let off of the brake the car would begin accelerating again. we did have an aftermarket floor mat on the driver side, however it is a very heavy, thick mat that does not move. we are 100% convinced that the floor mat was not on top of the accelerator pedal during this incident (as proven by the car finally slowing down and stopping with out the floor mat being adjusted).

We have a 2005 toyota prius. we have experienced the braking problem that has been noted with the 2010 models - the brakes seem to pause, especially when stopping on rough or slippery pavement. we had not reported this earlier, because we didn't know if this was just an illusion resulting from the hybrid system. now that the recall is in full effect, we believe that this is the same defect that is being reported. this has been a consistent item since we bought the car in 2005. at this time, we have done nothing to correct the issue. *tw

2005 toyota prius. similar braking problem as is in news for 2010 prius. after going over a (even a small) bump, car almost lurches forward; glad i wasn't near another car, or might have hit it. has happened a few times when going over small bumps took to dealer-did not find anything. seems like more of an acceleration. drivetrain problem. second possible prius issue: a few times when i pushed down accelerator to enter highway from full stop, nothing for a second-a delay that could be lethal. seems as bad as nader's corvair-based unsafe at any speed. would not buy another prius. *tw

I have a 2005 toyota prius. when i hit a bump and try to slow down, the car jumps forward. when i hit the brakes the car accelerates. this does not happen all of the time but is intermittent. i have tried to complain to toyota but cannot get through. *tw

The car suddenly and momentarily accelerates when coming out of a dip or pothole, or over a speed bump. momentarily sounds unimportant but one speed bump was ahead of a crosswalk at the zoo, with many people crossing. it has also accelerated for longer periods (30 seconds) on the highway. i did not report this to toyota because my in-laws prius did the same thing, only they almost had an accident and when they reported it to toyota, they were told that there was no problem with their car. they ended up selling it out of fear. the momentary accelerations happen frequently. the longer acceleration has happened twice, about 6 months ago. *tr
