Defect SummaryOn certain vehicles, due to improper assembly of the air bag inflator, which is used in the side air bag, the curtain shield air bag, and the knee air bag assembly, some inflators were produced with an insufficient amount of the heating agents necessary for proper air bag deployment. in this condition, the expansion force of the gas may be insufficient to properly inflate the air bag when the srs system is activated during a crash.
Consequence SummaryThis may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in the involved seating position in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the specific srs air bag. the recall began on april 6, 2006. owners may contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371, scion at 1-866-548-1851, or lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

I found that there is malfunction on the buttons on steering wheel, especially info button and buttons for climate. i researched the problem on internet and i found the problem is caused by a bad clock spring. also, i found the clock spring is related with air bag module. there are a lot of owners have the same problem (such as priuschat.com). i think that it could be a recall issue. and i experienced another problem. the accelerator pedal of my car was repaired by the recall service before. but when i release the accelerator pedal and try to push brake pedal, there is difference of height between both pedals. the height of brake pedal is higher than the accelerator pedal, even if i released the accelerator pedal. so it is dangerous to operate both pedals. when i tried to push the brake pedal after i released the accelerator pedal, my right feet was stuck with the brake pedal. i think the recall service for the accelerator pedal of my car was not successful. or there is another problem on the brake pedal of prius. *tr

Accident occurred in 2007. i was driving in moderate traffic on a two lane road. a car, two cars ahead of me, slammed on their brakes, and forced everyone else to quickly brake. i also slammed on my brakes, to avoid a collision. my brakes failed to respond in time, and resulted in my rear ending an suv in front of me. the accident caused several thousands of dollars worth of damage to the front end of the car. no air bags were deployed. *tr

On august 25, 2009 my daughter was involved in an accident with our 2006 toyota prius. this car had low mileage and a new set of tires. my daughter was probably going the speed limit of 45 mph when an emergency vehicle brought traffic to a halt, my daughter put on brakes but still ending up hitting the vehicle in front of her resulting in totaling the prius. thankfully, she was not injured, but the people she hit have a claim in for injuries, though none visible at the time of the accident. my biggest problem with this is that although she hit the car in front square on completely demolishing the front end none of her air bags deployed, none. on calling julissa at toyota headquarters i was told that they were designed not to deploy in this type of accident. i was dumbfounded, when were they supposed to deploy if not during a front end collision at about 35 mph. after i stopped shaking my head from disbelief i called back and spoke to a supervisor who in turn explained that the air bags reacted as designed, i suggested at that point that perhaps there may be a design flaw. i am not a rocket scientist but i have a pretty good idea what air bags are designed for, afterall i did pay all that money for them. needless to say i was not happy and am still upset that they would think the public is so stupid. as i mentioned the car was totaled and at the time was valued at $17,000. i received a full pay off for the car but feel they owe me something for the equity that was lost when the vehicle was totaled. i have photos and recorded conversations regarding the car and toyota representatives. *tr

On our 2006 toyota prius, the air bag faulty alarm came on continuously in december, 2008 under warranty and repaired. recently december 2009, the same air bag alarm came on again and remains on with engine on. we suspect there may be a faulty with the air bag system due to it coming in again in one year. *tr

Failure of airbag on 2006 prius to deploy after rear ending a car a 25 mph. car was totaled and chest and head swelling occurred due to hitting steering wheel. calls to toyota first indicated that air bag would not have been released due to internal compartment of car not being violated. after air bag engineer examined pictures, subsequent calls indicated that air bag could not have been released as sensors were not activated as car bumpers on car hit were higher than prius. *tr
