On september 26, 2007, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that some of its model year (my) 2007 and 2008 lexus e350 and toyota camry vehicles could experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the optional all weather floor mat offered on those vehicles and the vehicles' accelerator pedal.this decision was influenced by an office of defects investigation (odi) engineering analysis.this recall was designated 07e082.two years later, on october 5, 2009, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that a number of its my 2004-2009 lexus and toyota vehicles may also experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver's floor mat.this recall was designated 09v388.several months later, on january 27, 2010, toyota filed an amended, or supplemental, defect information report and expanded the population of vehicles to include additional my 2008-2010 toyota and lexus vehicles.since this expansiontook place in a different calendar year, this recall was designated 10v023.separately on january 21, 2010, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that certain toyota vehicles and certain pontiac vibe vehicles contained a safety defect in the accelerator pedal assembly that may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return, or in the worse case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.nhtsa designated this recall 10v017.in total, the four recalls cover over 7.6 million toyota and lexus vehicles as well as the pontiac vibe product made by new united motor manufacturing, inc., a venture of toyota and general motors corporation.nhtsa requires additional information from toyota to more fully understand and evaluate, among other things, whether the scope of the recalls identified above (makes, models and model years) is sufficiently broad.the agency is seeking to determine whether toyota viewed the underlying defects too narrowly as interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver

The following described incidents have taken place at least three times with no warning. upon starting the vehicle there is no instrument panel display which is digital. the vehicle could still be driven. the vehicle's engine would not turn off without making numerous attempts.this has sometimes taken up to 10 min.. then for whatever reasons after several hours the mentioned malfunctions stop and everything works correctly.i am very concerned the dash display showing speed and other necessary information will malfunction while the vehicle is being driven.especially at night.being able to turn the vehicle off immediately is also important.this vehicle is regularly serviced by toyota who have been unable to locate or correct the problem. i have researched this issue online and have found that there is a large number of toyota prius owners having the same type of safety issues with their vehicles. i have read but not confirmed that toyota is aware of the mentioned problems with the prius. there are some serious safety issues with this make and model of vehicle that need to be addressed as soon as possible. i hope nhtsa will be able to assist in this matter. thank you. *tr

The headlights on my 2007 prius goes out constantly especially at night time there which causes total darkness and blindness. when i flip the switch they will come back on for a while. i know you know about this problem. i feel you should make toyota recall these cars. the dealer will charge 300.00 per headlight to replace the bulb but we know that is not the problem. they wouldn't come back on if it was the light.. please please do something!! its terrifying and very dangerous. the liability for you and toyota will be great should fatalities occur.  Approx 12/19/12 i went outside to start my 2007 prius. when i hit the power button the car started up, however the dashboard lites did not work (speedometer, gas gauge, heat, a/c, etc). i turned the manual control wheel on the dashboard back & forth, thinking that would solve the problem but the lites still did not work. i backed out of my driveway and drove forward, thinking once i put the car in drive the lites would come back on, however that did not work either. i pulled the car back into my driveway, put it in park and hit the power button, but the engine would not shut down. i held the power button for an extended period of time and the car still would not shut down. i sat in it (in 32 degree weather) for about 20 min. and it shut down on its on. on the following day i took the car to toyota & left it there all day long. they told me they could not determine why it had malfunctioned because the battery checked out good and all the diagnostic tests were all good. i had the same thing happen again on 01/13/13 and on today, 01/20/13. i do believe that this is a safety violation that toyota refuses to recognize and i just want my complaint documented in the event something serious happens as a result of this situation. thanks... *tr

Headlights are intermittent on both sides. major safety issue. i have replaced the bulbs twice in less than a year and the issue still persists. it isn't the bulb the headlights are defective.

The headlights on this car have intermittently worked since the car had about 30,000 miles. the lights randomly turn off. usually one at a time but sometimes both go out. turning the lights off and back on fixes the problem, but only temporarily. i read that this is a problem with the bulbs going bad but i can attest that it is a clear defect. replaced the bulbs and it still happens periodically. *tr

Total dash board failure.....design is composite so all instruments go dark except check engine light which is the least of a safety issue...instrument panel should have separate circuits so safety isn't dependent on any single point of failure. *tr

The passenger side headlight frequently fails to turn on. sometimes it turns on, then shuts off within the course of a drive. sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. it seems like it must be a problem with the electrical system, as the bulb itself continues to light, it just doesn't light all the time. the driver's side headlight, in the mean time, is perfectly fine and never has problems, which also suggests some kind of electrical/connector issue.

The front headlight started going on and off periodically while driving, we went on a trip to hungary and the light started acting up. we have taken it to two toyota dealerships within germany with no resolution but expensive bills due to the mechanics hooking it up to computer systems to diagnose the problem. this is causing us safety issues while driving especially on not clear days due to the early morning fog. i have consulted with my brother's body shop to see if there has been any recalls or defects on the lights, nothing. i am taking it again this week to the toyota shop in mannheim germany. this problem has not been resolved since feb 2012. i would appreciate some resolution to this problem before the light's cause us an accident. i have had the two front headlight bulbs replaced which are not inexpensive. thank you if you need to contact me do it via email, this is my parents phone number in pa, i cannot type in my number in germany. sarah garcia

Left headlight started just going off completely at nite, now both are going off while driving. checking online, it seems that many other toyota owners have had same problem, and one of the vendors of headlights for toyotas manufactured defective headlights. thus not all toyotas have the prob, just the ones with this vendor's headlights. but it still shows many do have the bad headlights. toyota is not standing behind this issue and repairing the defective ones as they should. it is a very expensive...almost 2000 dollars to replace the computer controllers and headlights.

In 2010 (approximately), the dashboard display of my prius would intermittently not display when the car was first started. this condition makes it impossible to know how fast the car is going, how much fuel there is, etc. i visited dealers and independent mechanics and no one claimed to know anything about this problem. however, i have subsequently learned that toyota issued a service bulletin on this very issue in 2009! (t-sb-0172-09). i've also since learned (due to my own research) that the most likely cause of this problem is a faulty combination meter (as per the toyota sb). one independent garage in san francisco, ca has even started a blog about this because they are seeing so many repairs for this condition! it is absolutely a safety issue and the problem continues in my car today (i've just discovered the potential fix of replacing the combination meter). in addition to the dash display not working, often other issues, such as the engine not turning off, key not releasing from ignition, and rear hatch not releasing are also associated with this problem. toyota admits in its sb this is due to a faulty computer design from one of its suppliers but refuses to issue a recall notice. nhtsa should force toyota to address this issue as the problem happens not only at start-up, but sometimes while driving. losing speedometer visibility is a serious safety issue; as is not being able to disengage power in the normal fashion. *tr

We have had some unseasonably hot weather here recently; on the day in question the car thermometer said it was 91 degrees in full shade. the rubber gasket covering the hatch opening switch was attached when i parked. when i came back, it looked like the gasket had literally melted off one of the screws; the covering was just hanging on to screw on the driver's side by a few gooey threads. that left a melted, tar-like residue on the hatch opening switch. now the switch is covered in gunk and nearly inoperable. the prius does not have a trunk release, and without a repair the hatch is nearly inaccessible. this is a major safety issue because the hatch on the prius is a safety access point (the largest on the vehicle); the hatch is also the only way to access the batteries stored in the rear in case of fire or accident. when i googled the issue, i found multiple reports in hot weather areas of exactly the same issue, but i found no official response from toyota. my understanding is that this is a very common problem, especially here in southern california, and dealerships keep the part on hand in hot weather for exactly this reason. *tr

The rubber covering on the rear hatch opening mechanism is melting. i have two other model year prius vehicles (2004 and 2006) and this has not occurred on those - only on this 2007 car. it is becoming difficult to open the hatch and it will probably fail completely soon. *tr

I was driving on freeway (us 101 southbound in marin county caat 8:30 am), dry weather 60 deg f. entire dashboard went black (speedometer, fuel guage and other indicator lights all quit providing readings) and the energy monitor screen panel, while still lit, quit providing data (the miles shown on this panel were stuck at 107). therefore, no spedeometer readings were available. more importantly, i had extreme difficulty turning the prius off when i reached my destination--depressed and held power button several times, with foot on brake and auto in park. radio and air conditioning kept running, door would not lock and the energy monitor still showed background information. otherwise, prius drove normally. this was the second time this happened in last two weeks. after several tries, holding power button down for several seconds, i finally did get the prius to shut off. and, when restarted, the dashboard appeared to operate normally. not having dashboard indicators while driving is disturbing, but auto could be operated. not being able to turn vehicle off is more problematic because it is difficult to tell prius was not shut down (the fan contiues running when the car shuts down normally and electric motor is almost silent)--my indication was that the radio was still on and air conditioning was still running. if the car had been in drive, it could have taken off as electic motor was still on (i tested when i thought it was peculiar that radio was still on).

While driving the headlights will shut off. sometimes the drivers side would go out. sometimes the passenger side would go out. sometimes both headlights will go out. if you turn off the headlights and turn them back on they will work for various amounts of time. dealer mechanic states this is an extremly common occurance with this vehicle. repair cost was quoted at approx $600 to replace the headlights and that possibly this could not fix the problem and could need further repairs but this is where they start with this known issue.

When i started my prius and the dash lights did not come on (fuel gauge, mileage, speedometer etc). i put the car in reverse and the backup camera picture did not appear on the screen. the screen was on but continued to show the consumption screen. i then put the car in park and hit the power button and the car would not turn power off. i put the car in drive then park and reverse then park several times hitting the power button after each try and the car eventually powered off. i started the car again and headed to the golf course and called toyota and made an apointment for the same day. the next time i got in the car (about 4 hours later) the dash lights came on and i drove home and the car powered off normally. i cancelled the appointment at toyota for now and will see what happens. the service person at the dealership said that she had not heard of this problem.

Headlamps turn off on their own intermittently. the left light will go off more than the right. i usually correct the situation by turning off the lights then back on. this problem has increased in frequency. i read in an online forum (priuschat) that this is a common problem.

 1. the right-front headlight often goes out after the car has been driven for a while. (fortunately, both headlights don't haven't out yet!) this really should be considered a safety issue - why isn't there a recall? 2. the back-up camera often stops working for a few days at a time. this is a problem, given the very poor visibility the mirrors have behing this car.

The mileage is between 30 and 35 mpg, which is a long ways from the sticker claim. the headlight goes on and off intermittently, even though replaced several times. second headlight is also failing. the blower works only intermittently, usually after hitting a large bump in the road.

Approximately one week after having my battery replaced by a toyota dealership in temecula, ca the digital display on my dashboard stopped working and no longer displayed my speed, gas tank gauge, trip mileage or total mileage. after another week or so passed, the display, or cluster display, as it is listed on a toyota repair estimate from november 3, 2011, would work intermittently by again displaying my speed, gas tank gauge, etc. the display would sometimes work for a few hours and then stop working, and not work again for several days or a week or more. currently, it the display continues to work intermittently only, causing me to drive for days or a week or more with no visual display of how fast i am driving or how much gas i have remaining in my tank. this failure of the cluster display is a hazard to me and especially to my young teenage daughter because we do not know for sure how fast we are driving or how much gas we have remaining at any given time when the display stops working. i had my vehicle inspected by the toyota dealership in temecula, ca and they recommended replacing the combo meter since they believe there is an open circuit in the combo meter, but they could not guarantee that their recommendation would resolve the problem. they then advised me that a service bulletin was issued for problems with the cluster display, but no recall has been ordered and they could not cover the cost of fixing the problem under warranty. i then called toyota corporate offices at 800-331-4331and spoke to the service director, who offered me a 40% discount on the cost of replacing the combo meter on a reimbursement basis and said if a recall was ordered i would get a full refund. i believe the problem on my toyota prius of an intermittently functioning cluster display presents a significant hazard for the reasons stated above and warrants a recall.

No one injured. minor problem, but toyota refuses suggestions for legal reasons, so i have to report it to you, and hope that you will relay to toyota. good car, good dash lighting system, nice rheostat to dim the instrument panel lights at night, to assist in night road visibility. the problem is that as you dim the instrument panel lights, the lighted symbol for the emergency flasher light switch goes completely dark before the instrument panel lights do. so, on a dark night, you dim the lights to make the instrument panel lights just bright enough to read, without excess reflection or distraction, and the emergency flasher switch becomes invisible because its light went completely out before the other instrument panel lights did. this increases distraction and reduces reaction time when you need to find and turn on the emergency flasher light switch. i doubt this problem is limited to just my car. the simple solution (everything seems simple to the guy not doing the work) would be to design and wire the dash panel lights so that the emergency flasher switch light stays a little brighter than all the other lights, as they all dim. that way, the switch you might most need in a hurry will be visible, even if you have dimmed your instrument panel lights. quicker turn-on of the emergency flasher alerts following drivers sooner, increasing their safety, and mine. thanks for working to keep us all safer on the road, and to improve the vehicles we drive.

For some time i have been telling the dealer that i have been informed that one of my headlights is out but when they look at it at a later time they are working. i suspect that they have been doing this for a long time. now it appears that there is a progression. both headlights unexpectedly turned off plunging me into total darkness while driving at 70 miles per hour on an interstate highway at 5:00 in the morning. i found myself hurtling along in total darkness. i turned the light switch to the off position and turned it back on and the lights came on again but they went off again a few miles later and i went through the same process to get them to come on. the situation happened at least 5-6 more times before i reached my destination.

The passenger side hid headlight on our 2007 toyota prius goes on and off while driving. toyota has sent us a letter advising us that they are aware of the problem and are willing to repair the problem by offering us the bulb at half price, approximately $150. however, after doing some research i have read that the bulb may not be the problem and repairs could total $2000. since the problem occurs without warning i am concerned that at some point the other headlight could fail and cause total loss of vision at night resulting in an accident.

Headlights go off for no reason. we have a 2007 toyota prius with 58k miles on it. over the past few weeks, we've noticed the head lamps going off and coming back on. this is happening on both sides intermitently. my wife was driving to work in the dark the other morning and both headlights went out at once. she was able to turn off the light and turn them back on to restore her road vison. they stayed on for a few minutes and then the left one went out shortly afterwards. the car is now at courtesy toyota in brandon, fl and i'm being told the ballasts and the head light bulbs need replacing. this repair is costing us over 400.00. toyota claims it is not covered by warranty and there are no existing recalls.

Yesterday i was driving back from dropping off my son at school, getting on the freeway, my gas pedal was about 1/2 way depressed, the next thing i know the gas pedal is leaving my foot as if in cruise control and flooring itself, the car engine is racing full speed, fortunately i had run this through my head before, and i was competent enough to apply the brakes as hard as i could, put the car in neutral and safely pull off the freeway and turn off the car. so i was towed into toyota, given a loaner car and told that someone from the factory would come out to run some tests. first let me state, that after this was over i did look down to see if my floor mat was a factor in this, but also knowing that the pedal had left my foot and headed for the floor, the floor mat was a good 2 inches from the pedal. so this morning toyota calls me to say that they have determined that it indeed was my floor mat, no doubts in their minds about that, so they have given me a new floor mat and told me my car is fine. there is no doubt in my mind that this is an electrical problem, not a floor mat issue.

Summary: my car began accelerating while i was in park. i own a 2007 toyota prius. two days ago, i drove to my destination, pulled into a parking spot, and turned off the car. i was early, so i turned the car back on (so i could listen to the radio while i waited). the car was in park and i did not have my feet on any pedals. the car was on for less than a minute when it began to drive forward. i both heard the sound of the motor engaging and visually processed that the car was moving. i immediately stepped on the brake hard and the car immediately came to a stop. my 4-year-old was distressed because the rolling and hard stop made a big jolt. the car was still in park. i released the brake pedal and the car stayed still. i do not know if this is related, but my car headlights randomly turn off while i am driving. if i toggle the switch off and back on, they always come back on. i took it to the local dealer, where the repair guy told me they frequently see this problem, and all they do is replace the headlights (which made no sense to me, because the bulbs aren't burned out). i would say this problem happens about once a week.

Intermittent headlight operation on hid headlights 2007 toyota prius. both headlights went out at the same time while traveling on i75 last night. after almost wrecking, we pulled to the side of the road. after turning lights off for a while they came back on and started working again. this seems to be a frequent occurance according to blogs on the internet. i contacted the dealer and they said if they had to replace the unit it would be in the thousands of dollars!!!!! ($1100 for headlight computer, $500- $600+ for headlight bulbs and another $1100 for light kits) i think that is completely ridiculous to expect someone to pay that much just to be able to drive there car safely! none of this was revealed when the car was purchased! how could anyone expect to pay that kind of money to keep there headlights working? please help, we cannot afford to drive safely now!

When the car is first started, the driver side headlight usually goes out within the first few minutes of driving. it is almost always the driver side but it has happened a few times with the passenger side. when i turn the headlights off and then back on both headlights function, although the light that had been out initially is not as bright as the other. this happens intermittently for the first 10-20 minutes of driving and then both headlights seem to function properly. i recently drove at night for nearly 5 hours and only had this problem during the first 20 minutes of driving. *tr

 1) two times my car has accelerated on its own, and i had to feather the gas pedal to get it to stop accelerating, which took under a minute to correct. 2)when braking the car, if you hit sand or a bump which causes the slippery light to come on, the car transistions from generating power, to all brakes, at which point the car accelerates as there is an interruption and a short period of time where there is no breaks. 3)when you are coming to a stop such as at a bank drive-thru,when placing the car in park while only the electric system was running,if the motor turns on while still in park, the entire car launches forward 1-2 feet, extremely dangerous. *tr

I own a 2007 prius and noticed this problem for several months already. march 7, 2010 was a raining day in san diego. at about noon, i drove my wife to the market with the prius. i needed to turn on the warm air to defrost the windshield for better visibility. what i got was the cold air from the a/c. i checked the a/c indicator and it wasn't on. i touched the indicator to turn it on then off but nothing changed. the air was still cold. after shopping at the market, we started the prius again to drive home. the air then changed to warm. what we learned was only a total turn off could change the 'stuck' condition in the prius. this was not a dangerous incident but it could relate to the electronics malfunction in another serious accident. *tr

I own a 2007 prius, and have enjoyed the car ...however, sometime in october,2009, i was driving to a wedding shower and the car suddenly accelerated when i was entering a multi-lane expressway.. it would not decelerate when i eased off the accelerator..and i had to veer across lanes to avoid hitting a truck in front of me. simple braking did not stop the acceleration, only very hard and continued and panicked braking. on the way back, on an area of interstate that was free of vehicles, i was able to recreate the acceleration by 'stomping on the accelerator. again, it would not stop accelerating when i took my foot off the accelerator..and only after stomping the brake a lot did it return to regular responsiveness. i have not tried that again, and my husband did try, but could not duplicate my experience. we contacted our local toyota dealer (greentree in clarksville, in) and they were not responsive. later in the fall, after the recall about floor mats, we were told to take the floor mat away on drivers side, and a fix would be developed. i am now fearful of the car. i am reporting now because i do not believe that the prius problem is a simple floor mat issue (never did, but am a woman and certainly not knowledgeable so as to refute toyota's engineers..). *tr

I own a 2007 toyota prius, for two years when the car is not garaged the electronics acts up by not displaying anything! no displays will illuminate. if you drive it a while, the next time you turn it off it might correct itself. this occurred sporadically the main factor was i wasn't at home to have it garaged. now what is happening is besides just the display, it also will not shut off! i had to leave it running and go to work, my husband came and kept pressing the power button until it would respond. i have talked to another 2007 prius owner and this has happen to them also. now i hear that the cause of toyota woes maybe the main electronic program, which is what the toyota dealer mechanic told me would need to be replace to stop my problem! *tr

On december 26, 2009, when our car was put in reverse to back out of our garage, my husband noticed the car did not have the usual beeping when backing up. less than a block from our home, he noticed the display panel with the speedometer, fuel gauge, shift indicator, etc. was black. the dimmer switch would not bring the dashboard lights back on. however, the display in the center for climate control, mpg, etc. was working. he turned around and returned home. when home he was unable to turn the car off. after many tries, we were eventually able to turn the car off by holding down the power button for an extended time--much longer than usually needed. when we restarted the car, everything appeared to be functioning properly. on december 28, 2009 i brought the car to the dealer. i was told to bring the car back if it happened again, and it was unlikely they would find what went wrong when the car was functioning properly. i was told not to turn off the car when it malfunctioned. i expressed my concern about driving the car when i was unable to see the speedometer and when it was obvious the electronics was not performing properly. i was told i could have the car towed if necessary. i asked to have my incident included in our file. on february 4 after hearing about the recalls, i decided to call our dealer to make sure they had a record of our incident. i was told the incident was not on record. i was told that if i had a problem, i should bring the car in and they would fix it. i asked that for now, i would just like to have our incident documented in our file. the toyota representative refused to put the information in our file. i suggested they just say the customer reported the incident and they could not verify it. again, he said he would not do that. if i had a problem with the car, i should bring it in and they would fix it. how can they find a fix when they will not document problems? *tw

Toyota prius loss of electical power, loss of steering resulting in crash in may 2009 while driving in a residental neighborhood at low speeds, prius lost all power resulting in loss of steering and loss of brakes resulting in crash into a high curb. i had prius towed to toyota dealership and filed complaint with dealership as well as with main california complaint center. they said that it would take them 4 months to investigate complaint. they recommended my storing car at dealership for four months if i wanted an investigation. they would not investigate otherwise. they told me there was no cause for concern and that the power loss must of resulted after the crash. they said that toyota had no safety complaints about power loss or steering or brake loss. i went on line and found same year model recall in australia. they told me the products were dissimilar and not a cause for concern. i disagreed. my routine mechanic at merchants tire and auto could find nothing wrong. i repaired the structural damage and sold the car since toyota assured me there was nothing wrong. toyota corporation's methodology of investigation appears to be designed to stifle any meaningful determination of baseline safety fault. the requirement to store a car for months at owners expense and for driver to have no access for transportation would appear to discourage any meaningful investigation of safety concern. given the current finding of brake and other safety defects in toyota products, i am concerned that the power loss may have been under-reported because of their unethical business practices. i report it to help you determine if there is a pattern of power loss, loss of steering and loss of braking in the prius. *cn

We have repeatedly had problems with all of the electronic components on the dash not working especially when it is cold. this is a safety hazard as we have no speedometer, gas gauge or gear indicator when this happens. this happens often when it is cold or raining but there is no predictor other than a cold temperature. it has often happened at night, and we have had to drive home with the interior of the car dark. t has happened repeatedly since we bought the car new. we have had it at the dealer 5 times for repairs and still continue to have the same problem. we have are very unhappy with our toyota and will not buy another toyota. *tr

Right headlight will not stay lit. goes on an off randomly. turning off the switch and back on will turn the light on for a random amount of time. nothing done yet to correct the problem. toyota implies that i am responsible for the cost to get it fixed. many reports on web indicate this is a very common problem with model year 2007 and 2008 prius. it may be an over heating of the computer that controls the lights and typically cost $1500 to $2000 to get it fixed. last night it was 46% and it stayed lit for the 27 mile trip home from work. summer months it fades out after the first 5 minutes of driving. *tr

I have a 2007 toyota prius, and the driver's side headlight has been giving me problems for about the last 20k miles(50-70k). toyota dealer said it would cost over $400 to replace the bulb, but i can turn the lights on and off to make it light up again. seems like this is an electrical problem and not the bulb. when searching for a cheaper alternative, i ran across how many of the prius are having the same problem. i live in a very rural area with curvy winding roads getting home in the evening. when that light cuts out i can hardly see the road. i don't know how this isn't a safety issue, especially when it could happen to both as i read has happened with others. *tr

Intermittent failure of driver's side headlight. the light will come back on if the light switch is turned off and then back on, and will remain on for a an unpredictable period of time, some times as long two weeks before failing again. toyota has advise me to bring the vehicle to a service facility when the light is out, but the light fails on weekends, holidays, or late at night when the dealership is not open. an internet search disclosed that this headlight failure is a fairly common defect in 2007 prius. *tr

I bought a 2007 toyota prius on august 1, 2007. i didn't have any issues with my car until august of 2008 when i started having issues with my headlights and tail lights (they would go off and then when i turned the lights off and flipped back on, they would come back on again). twice while driving at night, all of my lights went out (headlights, tail lights and dash board lights)! i brought car into dealer and they didn't know what was wrong but replaced the headlights (to the tune of $1200 a piece). i didn't have trouble with my headlights after than until this year (august of 2009). my passenger headlight is going out and then flipping back on for a bit (although the bulb seems dull) when i turn lights off and then back on again. the problem is they won't stay on and it seems insane to pay $2400 a year for what obviously seems to be a vehicle defect; not to mention the safety issue of only having 1 headlight that works or tail light and dashboard lights going out while driving at night! *tr

While driving across country boston to seattle in june, the right headlight on my 2007 prius flickered and went out. the next day it was working ok, but the following day i noticed it went out again, during the day. i stopped in duluth to get an oil change, (kolar todayota invoice 210740) and asked them to check the headlights. they reported headlights are working at the time. thereafter the headlight went out several times intermittently. cycling the power would sometimes bring it back on. when i got back to seattle, i took the car in and had the headlight replaced at a cost of $288 (toyota of believe invoice ocs561092) at 48,260 miles. shortly thereafter the left headlight started acting up in the same manner, and i was recently pulled over by the police for driving with one headlight out. *tr

I was driving down a familiar road when my headlights went out. my car is a 2007 prius. in talking to a repairman at the shop i discovered that high intensity (and high heat) bulbs would stop working without any warning if the bulbs became too hot. if they were turned off for a few seconds they would cool off and work again. as a result i have no way of knowing when the bulbs are going to go off. i took the car into the toyota dealer and was told that although both bulbs appeared to be working, the fact that they had both stopped working indicated that they must have an internal short and should be replaced by the same type of bulb, with the same problem at a cost of $807.00. the only reason i am alive to report this incident is because i was on a straight stretch of a familiar road, and there were other cars around. i turned my lights for 30 seconds and then turned them back on. at least one of the headlights came back on so i could continue home. i requested headlights that would not go off and on without warning however so far toyota has only offered to replace the headlights with the same unreliable headlights. *tr

The passenger side headlight turns off intermittently at night. comes on and goes off randomly, even when on a flat surface or sitting still. recently i was driving on a dark, winding road and it went out presenting an extremely dangerous condition. according to the discussion boards, this is a very common indication and very expensive remediation item which will prevent many from fixing during out current economic crisis. i am very worried about my wife driving at night in this car don't want my children in it at night. this is a very serious issue in that the driver could hit something resulting in injury to the occupants, or another car could become confused by the headlight failure resulting in an incident. again, the message boards are loaded with discussion on this item. *tr

Hid headlamps on my 2007 toyota prius do not function properly. for the past several months they have flickered off and on. turning the light off and then on, while driving corrected the problem for a while. now one lamp only stays on for 1 minute or less. the other still goes off and will turn back on if the lights are turned off and then back on. toyota's response is to want to charge me $350 for a new bulb or over $1000 for a controller board for the computer. from what i have read on line my car is not the only prius with this problem. we need a recall now before some one's lights fail at night and they die! *tr

At 4:45 pm on 2/5/2009 , i drove my 2007 toyota prius west on sw andover st. in seattle wa. i slowed as i made a right turn to park perpendicular to the street with a 6 foot high chain-link fence in front of me on top of a retaining wall. the bottom of the wall is 6 feet below street level on a paved parking area. as the prius approached the fence, i braked to stop, but the car did not slow ,so i floored the brake. the car hit a fence post, pulling it out of its mount and then the car moved over the top of the wall pushing the pole and fence over its hood & roof,. the front of the prius dropped to the area below the wall while the rear remained on the top. the fence mesh stretched but slowed the prius's forward movement and kept the rear from going over the wall.. the dashboard was still lit and i lowered the electrical windows and yelled for help. the first arrival told me to turn off the car. this is significant because the only way he could have known the car was running was if he heard the sound of the prius's gasoline engine that only kicks in at higher speeds. i opened the door and jumped down to the pavement. the police came and made a report. i did not receive a citation. the prius was extracted by a tow company and hauled away. fortunately i received no physical injury. the chain link fence was truly a safety net. on 2./12/ 2009, my insurance company , usaa, declared my prius totaled and made a settlement payment. i thought perhaps my brakes had failed. i had my prius receive a routine 25,000 mile check at the toyota dealership just eight days before the accident. from articles on www.consumersafety.com i learned that similar accidents with the prius have happened to other people. after reading their experiences, i now believe that unintended acceleration was the more likely cause of my accident. *tr

I owned a 2007 prius and lately it has these problems. the left head light goes out while driving more often than the right headlight. on several occasion, both headlights went out on it's own during driving. this is a serious problem that can lead to death if drivers were nears hazardous road such as california hwy 1 where drivers can fall off the cliff on turns with sudden headlights went out. to reset the lights by turn off and on again but the problem repeat with one light goes out every 5 minutes while driving. i think toyota needs to issue a recall before someone got serious injury from this clearly a flaw in design. steve *tr

I have a 2007 toyota prius with about 40,000 miles on it now. at about 37,000 miles, my driver's side hid headlight would periodically go out while driving. soon afterwards, the passenger side headlight would go out, an once both went out. the lights would come back on if the switch was turned off and then back on. i had the car checked by toyota and had to replace the driver's side bulb for about $400. now, the passenger side bulb is starting to go off more frequently and will have to be replaced. i was shocked that these hid bulbs did not have a longer life, failed so suddenly and at their high cost of replacement. it is a serious danger to be driving at night and have your headlights fail, particularly when replacement is not a simple or inexpensive task. the bulbs are not easily accessible. public forums show that this is a common occurrence in the toyota prius, the replacements are from a different manufacturer and have no reported problems, yet no recall was made. *tr

I own and operate a 2007 toyota prius. to date i have been extremely satisfied with the vehicle. however, recently i have been experiencing intermittent failure of my passenger headlight and occasionally the brake light on the passenger side. this is a safety concern because i do not know when the light is on or off. the other day i was pulled over by the police and received a repair order. the cost from the dealer to replace the bulb is $535.00, apparently this is maintenance and a non warranty item. personally i think there is a design flaw if it requires a mechanic to change a lightbulb. i am posting a message here in hopes that this will convert into a safety recall. i am going to work with the dealer and toyota to try and get this repair covered. wish me luck! *tr

Started noticing my passenger side head light going out sporadically. just as the others, by turning them off, then on, the lights come back on. was actually stopped by a va state trooper, who advised his father-in-law had the same problem & that this was a manufacturer error. so, i took this issue to my dealer due to having an extended warranty. they called my warranty company before starting work to fix this $500 issue (which, all they did was replace the bulb). it then started occurring on my driver side. when i took it in to have this fixed / looked at, was advised the warranty company had denied the charge with the dealer & the dealer had comp'd the charge as a courtesy. based on these reports, i just called the dealer to advise them of these issues & am hoping for a resolution to this issue. *tr

I have a 2007 prius, starting around 39,000 miles, i noticed my right headlight was out, but the next time i started my car it was working. after a few weeks i noticed both the left and right headlights would randomly go out. i took my car into the dealer multiple times, but when i was at the dealership they could not duplicate the problem. i was told to bring my car back when the problem existed. i took my car in to the dealer and at that time both lights were out, at the same time. the tech that wrote up my ticket saw both lights out, the reached in the drivers side window and turned the lights off, then back on. both lights worked, they kept the car overnight and could not duplicate the problem. i have since taken in the car and duplicated the problem, the service manager was made aware of this problem. they checked my car out and suggested to change both hid lights and the computer that controls each light, one for each side. the cost of this repair will be over $1,500. lately this failure occurs consistently everytime i start the car. i drive to work at 5:00am in the morning so this problem poses a hazard as now both lights will go out at the same time. i have had cars flash their lights when i have not notice both lights have gone off. the lights now seem to dim, then go out so i do not notice when the street lights are bright. i have read on priuschat.com/forums, that this is a problem that many people have written in to complain. *tr

Indicator lights flashed. malfunction indicator lamp stayed on. at 2,644 miles, 12 v. battery dead & replaced. i was told to keep the gas tank half or a quarter full or the reserve gas tank would cause the car to run on battery. the battery might have died because the car sat too long before it was sold/at 8,879 miles, i went in. after filling the gas tank & taking out the nozzle, gas spewed & bubbled out. the car stalled while driving slowly & while in park. indicator lights flashed. the malfunction indicator lamp and master warning lights stayed on. it took 5 min. to turn off the car. i started the car. those lights stayed on. i was told i left the trunk door open & ran down the battery. (not true.) there is a gasket around the access hole and if a person is a little bit off, the gas will regurgitate. (i was not off & did not top off the tank.) they reprogrammed the computer. the gas tank had not been filled so i knew they did not fill the gas tank and try to recreate the situation as they said they would. i bought gas at a different pump. i stopped at a stop light. i could feel a loss of power in the car. when i pushed the gas pedal, the car would not move. i turned the car off and on 3 times before it would move. it crept slowly through the intersection as the traffic signal turned red. i took the car in at 8,936 miles. i was told if my problem is associated with the battery that was taken out of my car, it is not at repair person's responsibility because he did not touch my battery. when a battery is disconnected for a certain amount of time, if something is not reset, it could cause problems. then, he said no trouble found/my car stalled and/or had a loss of power. i took it in at 9,014 miles. no trouble found. i was told that my problems could have been caused by a faulty gas pump overfilling my tank. the gas station is new. the manager said the pumps were inspected. if there were a faulty pump, everyone would have problems. *tr
