Tail gate lifters failed to completely lift the tail gate. not noticing the tail gate was slightly lower than normal, the driver, while standing on the ground to remove groceries from the back, leaned into back of vehicle and struck the top of her head on the tail gate, sustaining a concussion. symptoms included nausea, headaches and difficulty concentrating, leaving her unable to complete her normal tasks for the day. the symptoms lasted 2 days. driver's husband came out and immediately confirmed that tailgate had failed to open completely and he determined it was no longer opening completely, representing a partial but dangerous failure of the lifting mechanism. the time was approximately 4 pm; the temperature was approximately 48 degrees. what makes it particularly dangerous and pernicious is that the mechanism that used to open the tail gate all the way up, providing ample head clearance, was now leaving the tail gate open but with reduced headroom. the mechanism that used to provide sufficient head clearance so one could stand behind the vehicle and lean into the rear was now only partially opening the tail gate, to a point low enough to cause a concussion but not low enough to be noticeable. the change from having ample headroom to not having enough headroom created a trap.

My car will not turn off. after my dash went black my key will not release and my car will not turn off . this is a big safety issue and needs to be resolved asap!

The dash board did not display when i turned on my car. only the blinkers, and air bag lights work on the dash. the gas gauge and the speedodometer do not show, it is black. and my car will not turn off. it seams to me that this issue is a major safety issue.

The back latch covering has a vinyl(?) covering which has become sticky and the latch itself is difficult to open, resulting in continued attempts. it is a hindrance to gain access to the trunk area and thus access to the spare tire if needed.

The rubber rear hatch release button (wide rubber piece which activates an electrical switch) first became sticky and black rubber would stick you your hand. then the rubber piece hardened and became so hard (and cracked) that the rear hatch release does not work. this is a safety issue in addition to making the trunk unusable. toyota owners of this model year frequently report this problem in all climates, toyota clearly has a manufacturing defect in the rubber material they used for this model year and should perform these repairs for no charge.

The rear trunk release has melted and the trunk cannot open or if it does requires much effort. poses a safety issue.

The rubber on the hatch entry deteriorated so severely that it coated my fingers with a hot tarry mess that burned my fingers and stuck there, continuing to burn. the hatch also became virtually impossible to open and several times, especially in colder weather would not open at all. this is also a safety hazard since entry to the vehicle from the rear becomes impossible at such times. since i am handicapped and on disability (serious heart, lung and back problems) i need to be able to place equipment and purchases in the hatch area, but i often cannot access the area. toyota is well aware that this part is defective, but has refused to cooperate with toyota owners. therefore, i am asking the nhtsa to consider the safety issues caused by this defective part and take action to force toyota to replace or repair this defective part.

Rear hatch lock has soft plastic cover which melted in my hand when trying to open car. plastic cover turned black and soft and sticks to skin when you touch to open the car. lock also now does not open properly now due to electrical problem in the part. should be recalled.

We have had some unseasonably hot weather here recently; on the day in question the car thermometer said it was 91 degrees in full shade. the rubber gasket covering the hatch opening switch was attached when i parked. when i came back, it looked like the gasket had literally melted off one of the screws; the covering was just hanging on to screw on the driver's side by a few gooey threads. that left a melted, tar-like residue on the hatch opening switch. now the switch is covered in gunk and nearly inoperable. the prius does not have a trunk release, and without a repair the hatch is nearly inaccessible. this is a major safety issue because the hatch on the prius is a safety access point (the largest on the vehicle); the hatch is also the only way to access the batteries stored in the rear in case of fire or accident. when i googled the issue, i found multiple reports in hot weather areas of exactly the same issue, but i found no official response from toyota. my understanding is that this is a very common problem, especially here in southern california, and dealerships keep the part on hand in hot weather for exactly this reason.

My 2007 toyota prius hid left/right lights goes off intermittently when driving!! sometimes both of them go out at the same time, it is so dangerous. i contacted the toyota dealer and they want $300 to replace head lamps, but do not guarantee that it will fix the issue. last night i was stopped by police because my driver side head lamps was out, but i had turn off, then on the lights, and it was back on. i believed this is a well known issue with the toyota prius and toyota should do the right thing and fixed it. i hope that toyota does not wait for a major accident to do the right thing.

The hatch release on the hatchback melted making the hatchback nearly impossible to open. as saftey equipment such as flares, spare tires, and flags are kept in the hatch under the flooring, not being able to access them in an emergency is a serious safety issue.

The trunk handle had melted off, making access to the spare tire impossible in the heat.

The tailgate switch had a rubber cover that is melting and become unfunctional at times. according to toyota service department, this is a common problem on many prius. the breakdown starts after warranty runs out in many cars

On the trunk is a door latch with a plastic cover. the plastic cover has melted or is disintegrating. there are many posts on google if you search for the terms prius trunk latch melt. considering i don't drive very often my car is almost always covered in the garage. plus i live in hawaii so heat shouldn't be too much of an issue like other states. this isn't my picture but it shows what mines looks like. http://priuschat.com/attachments/p1000894-jpg.22615/

I was driving on freeway (us 101 southbound in marin county caat 8:30 am), dry weather 60 deg f. entire dashboard went black (speedometer, fuel guage and other indicator lights all quit providing readings) and the energy monitor screen panel, while still lit, quit providing data (the miles shown on this panel were stuck at 107). therefore, no spedeometer readings were available. more importantly, i had extreme difficulty turning the prius off when i reached my destination--depressed and held power button several times, with foot on brake and auto in park. radio and air conditioning kept running, door would not lock and the energy monitor still showed background information. otherwise, prius drove normally. this was the second time this happened in last two weeks. after several tries, holding power button down for several seconds, i finally did get the prius to shut off. and, when restarted, the dashboard appeared to operate normally. not having dashboard indicators while driving is disturbing, but auto could be operated. not being able to turn vehicle off is more problematic because it is difficult to tell prius was not shut down (the fan contiues running when the car shuts down normally and electric motor is almost silent)--my indication was that the radio was still on and air conditioning was still running. if the car had been in drive, it could have taken off as electic motor was still on (i tested when i thought it was peculiar that radio was still on).

My 2007 toyota pruis' rear hatchback latch rubber covering has melted into black goo. every time i open the hatch it gets all over my fingers. i asked my dealer if toyota had recalled the latch and was told no. i didn't have it replaced then because it is very expensive. however i can't take it anymore and am going to get it replaced before the latch fails to open. it is going to cost $257! this is a safety issue and a defect issue, not a normal wear and tear item. toyota has known about this and done nothing to fix it by issuing a recall. shameful.

After only about 4 years use, the rubber cover on the hatch release handle (the exterior handle of the rear hatch) of our 2007 toyota prius, melted into a sticky tarry black rubbery gooey mess. i can best describe it as being a viscous black glob like roofing tar. to open the hatch, you have to touch this black goo each time, which makes it difficult to operate the hatch release. we believe this melting process started at about the 3 yr. mark. we live in texas where temperatures were extremely warm last summer. apparently toyota knows about this, and is selling the entire wiring harness for $96 plus repair costs, and has done nothing about recalling this. from a safety perspective, this means you can experience extreme difficulty opening the rear hatch (a life safety access point), and will get sticky black tar on you from the melted down rubber cover of the exterior hatch release handle. i have had several instances where i was not able to get the hatch open on an extremely hot day. to me, this is both a serious life safety issue and a serious quality defect that toyota is opting to ignore and only fixing on vehicles with extended warranties, since the failure appears to occur at around the 3 year mark (ie after 3 years of exposure to the bright sun in florida for example). i am aware of the outstanding work done by nhtsa on other safety issues, including the problem with rusty frames on 02 isuzu axioms, and i find this problem to be similar in nature, so i am asking for your agency to take a look at these instances and also to inquire from toyota why they are not recalling these handles that are melting in the sun!!! it's outrageous. i think a door handle or hatch handle should be made to last more than 3 years.

The rear hatch release on my 2007 toyota prius has begun to deteriorate and turn into a rubbery and sticky black mess. this issue interferes with the use of the hatch as the rubber not only gets on your fingers but appears to be blocking the release mechanism. the deterioration started during the summer of 2011. the issue has worsened and yesterday i was unable to open the rear hatch whatsoever.

The hatchback handle on my 2007 toyota prius has melted over time. this causes the latching mechanism to fail, which is a potential safety hazard in that it leaves this door virtually inaccessible during an emergency. each time i try to open the rear door, melted rubber sticks to my hand. this car has performed satisfactorily otherwise, but the handle failure constitutes a manufacturing defect.
08/15/201144000
The rubber cover on the rear exterior hatch latch melted and is like tar. big sticky mess every time i use the hatch which is often.the latch now also sticks sometimes. dealer wants $260 to fix it. why isn't toyota covering this obvious defect?

The rubber tailgate release handle above the license plate has started to melt and has become a sticky, gooey mess. this black goo comes off on your hands whenever you open the tailgate. i fear this substance could be hazardous to a persons health, such as causing cancer. i also fear that because of its condition the handle may become inoperable in a life-threatening situation. i believe this is a serious part defect that toyota should be responsible for fixing regardless of whether the car is under warranty or not. thank you.

2007 toyota prius, back hatch release, rubber piece. this piece has deteriorated and it difficult to open back hatch. i have had this problem for about 1 year. i have done research and see this is a common problem in these 2007 toyota vehicles. i believe this to be a hazard and would think toyota would have recalled this piece as there are so many complaints.

The trunk latch for our 2007 toyota prius started melting into a gooey mess about 3 years after we purchased it. it seems that many other owners of the 2007 prius have experienced the same thing. toyota will not replace it as defective equipment; however, it is obvious that door handles are not supposed to melt, even if you live in a warm climate.
04/01/2009
Trunk latch rubber has deteriorated to the point of stickiness and black coming off on your fingers when opening. sometimes, it takes a few tries before it will open. in the winter during cold weather, the rubber is very hard and you cannot open the trunk (hatch) at all. the only way we were able to open the hatch was to first run a hairdryer on it to enable us to open the door. this could potentially cause a safety hazard if access to the back was required in an emergency. toyota has failled to issue a recall for this defect. our car has always been garage kept and not left parked in the sun. plus, we have owned numerous other cars, to include toyotas, which have never had a problem with a trunck (hatch) lock.

I received a notice in the mail stating that i needed to have my aftermarket sunroof replaced due to the fact that the glass was poorly bonded to the frame. the manufacturer is webasto. after finally being able to get registered with webasto to have the repair take place, i was called and told that the parts would not be available for 4-7 weeks. it has been about two weeks, and i've had no updates or calls about my car. i think that 4-7 weeks is an unreasonable amount of time to have to wait for parts when you're in danger of having your sunroof fall on top of you.

Dashboard red lights when vehicle starts with: brake failure , abs warning and stability warning. first time it was immediately taken to dealer who could find no problem and reset codes. four days later same warning lights came on and was taken to dealer again. were told hydraulic brake system was ok but brake actuator needed replacement at $2600. could be driven but without abs and stability capabilty. have not corrected this due to high price. shopping around at salvage yards.

Twenty miles from my destination, both headlights went out, leaving only fog lights. this occurred at night, in the rain, on an interstate highway. the dealership advised both lights were burnt out and charged in excess of $400.00 to replace the bulbs.

I have a 2007 prius with hid headlights. on an intermittent basis, one of the headlights will not operate or will stop operating. turning the lights off with the switch on the stalk will restore operation. not a good thing to have to do on a dark two lane rural road on a dark night. as an example, yesterday during a rain filed day, the headlights were turned on as required by maryland law. we were leaving to drive to pa when my wife got in the car she noticed the right headlight was out. off and on did not seem to make a difference. after arriving in pa, i had to drive on a dark and rain filled road and i believe that the right light was working but the left (driver side) was not. i was taking my son to the er and did not have time to trouble shoot the problem. today, in the middle of the day, both headlights were fully functional. i first noticed this problem about 10 months ago on a night trip. the problem has occurred three or four times over the time period. i know i will get a huge bill from toyota to replace the bulbs and that may or may not solve the problem. it is a huge safety issue.

The headlights on my 2007 prius come and go. the problem is a defect in the headlights and the fix is more than $500. for the headlights. this is really dangerous because i think there is a problem and i look they are okay. then someone tells me my headlight is off and it is but when i look at it later, they are working. i suspect that they have been doing this a long time but i did not realize it. this is dangerous. i want a recall!! this is worse than the pedal problem

Anti lock brakes take a second or two to grab when traveling on bumpy, uneven, bad road surfaces. this has ocurred since day one that i received the car and i have allowed extra space to stop because of it. i did ask my dealership 2 years ago about this problem and they could find nothing wrong with the brakes. the most recent incident happened on 4/29/2010 and i slid through a red light. thank god no one was ahead of me.

2007 prius touring. consumer writes to express sincere disappointment over automobile transaction. *tgw the consumer stated she was involved in an accident and his vehicle was totaled. the consume stated he was assured the vehicle he was about to purchase, had not been in any previous accidents. the consumer later discovered the vehicle had indeed been in multiple collisions, both front and rear. the consumer stated he began to notice the hood was not aligned properly, the rubber on the right front corner between the windshield and the right quarter panel was disconnected from the body and the lower front panel appeared to be slightly flared out. *jb

 1. my partner left work at @ 4 pm and started to drive home. it was a clear day with no precipitation. he was about a mile away from work proceeding west on nj state route 561 when he came to a stop 1-2 feet behind a truck at a stoplight. he had his foot on the brake. 2. he was caught off guard as the car accelerated forward into the truck ahead of him without his doing anything to the accelerator. damage was caused to the truck's bumper and to the prius' bumper and hood. we had never had this occur in the car and had no other problems prior to this incident. 3. in the split-second he had to react, he jammed his foot on the brake and tried to deploy the p button on the dash, but the p button did not engage nor light up as green. a police report was made and the car was driven home. the local toyota dealer, where the car was purchased and serviced, was contacted and they asked us to contact toyota experience, and we gave a full report and received a case #: 1004081978. we then brought the car to the dealer's body shop the next day and awaited our insurance claims adjuster and the experience team to come and get the data off the computer to see what might have caused the accident. we will have the physical damage to the car repaired (damage to bumper and hood) as soon as the experience team is able to get the data.

An fyi for prius owners, i have a 2007 prius and had the following happen to me, as i was driving my navigation display suddenly began displaying a view out of my backup camera, which was very disorientating as my eye was drawn to the image of the road disappearing behind me. i pulled over and powered down and then rebooted my cars computer system and it has been fine since. this does bring to mind that if the car is able to think its in reverse when driving forward then any number of things could be misinterpreted by the computer system.

This event has occured on a number of occasions with my 2007 toyota prius. when i am applying the brakes and go over a bump or pothole, the traction control light appears and the brakes weaken for a moment. the light will go off and the breaks feel like they go back to full strength. i am aware of this issue and have modified my driving becasue of it. recently while approaching an intersection i had to slow very quickly and hit a pothole while the brakes were applied. i traveled several feet further because the brakes were not reacting at full strength when the light was on. i have heard of other 2007 owners complaining but when i contacted my toyota dealer they said there was nothing they could do until there is a recall. that was the only time i contacted my dealer because it made me so upset. it is safe to say that from the moment i have purchased the car (within the first week) to current, if i am breaking and hitting a bump or pothole of significant disruptance at the same time - this situation replays itself. the date of incident is around the first date of the first occurance. it has happened nearly 100+ times since then.

I was driving onto the highway and the entrance curved. the road was wet from a recent start of rain. i tried to brake my car and the brakes did not catch and i spun out on the entrance ramp and hit a reflector pole and ended up in the dirt on the shoulder of the on ramp. *tr

Toyota prius loss of electical power, loss of steering resulting in crash in may 2009 while driving in a residental neighborhood at low speeds, prius lost all power resulting in loss of steering and loss of brakes resulting in crash into a high curb. i had prius towed to toyota dealership and filed complaint with dealership as well as with main california complaint center. they said that it would take them 4 months to investigate complaint. they recommended my storing car at dealership for four months if i wanted an investigation. they would not investigate otherwise. they told me there was no cause for concern and that the power loss must of resulted after the crash. they said that toyota had no safety complaints about power loss or steering or brake loss. i went on line and found same year model recall in australia. they told me the products were dissimilar and not a cause for concern. i disagreed. my routine mechanic at merchants tire and auto could find nothing wrong. i repaired the structural damage and sold the car since toyota assured me there was nothing wrong. toyota corporation's methodology of investigation appears to be designed to stifle any meaningful determination of baseline safety fault. the requirement to store a car for months at owners expense and for driver to have no access for transportation would appear to discourage any meaningful investigation of safety concern. given the current finding of brake and other safety defects in toyota products, i am concerned that the power loss may have been under-reported because of their unethical business practices. i report it to help you determine if there is a pattern of power loss, loss of steering and loss of braking in the prius. *cn

This incident involves my 2007 toyota prius hybrid that i have owned for almost a year. as i was driving approximately 40 mph and put my foot on the brake as i approached a red light, the red brake warning came on the dash as did the abs warning light. my foot went all the way to the floor and i had no brakes. luckily i had a right turning lane that i could veer into and not hit the stopped vehicles in front of me. as i continued to push the brake to the floor and maneuver the vehicle out of traffic, it seemed to catch a little and i was able to slow the vehicle eventually to a stop. i put the vehicle in park as it was still running, and pulled out the owner's manual. the manual specifically stated that if these two warning lights came on at the same time, you were to stop immediately and contact your toyota dealership. this is exactly what i did. i had the vehicle towed into their facility that evening. the next day i was interrogated by the mechanic after a diagnostic report was done on my car. he wanted to know when i let the car run out of gas. i have never let my car run out of gas, and in fact that just filled the take the day before this incident occurred. the mechanic couldn't tell me what was wrong and contacted toyota's corporate office. two days later, i was advised that the reason the brakes didn't work was because i let the car run out of gas and this caused the engine to shut off. i argued that the car had never run out of gas and the engine didn't shut off, the brakes went out. the service manager pulled out the diagnostic test showing that at some point the car had run out of gas----this test doesn't give a date of when this may have happened. i advised the service manager that the car had 223 miles on it when i purchased it-- this test result could have happened when the car was still at the dealership, not in my possession. the service manager advised me that his hands were tied and that toyota had made their decision. *tr
