Was driving 2008 rav4 out of town with my wife. came to a stoplight and quickly applied brakes and engine started revving upward. had to press on brake with full force to keep the car from accelerating through the red light. shifted to park and the car bucked and engine almost red-lined at 6000 rpms. shifted to drive and went through red light and pulled off to the side. tried to replicate in neutral and could only get to 5000 rpms. thank goodness no one was in front of me and my wife wasn't driving as i don't think she would have known how to react to such an unexpected and dangerous situation. brought to dealership and they performed health check analysis and said all ok at this time. unhappy with the result of the check, called dealership back and was told to call 800-331-4331 (toyota headquarters in ca) to file a report. rep took down all of the information and put me on hold to check into the matter. created a case number and notified customer service manager at dealership to have a field tech rep look at the car. hoping they can rectify the situation (computer glitch?) as my wife is now afraid to drive the car for fear of possible damage, injury or death. since the 2008 wasn't part of the recent acceleration/floor mat recall, if you've had a similar scare with your 2008 rav4, please call the 800 number and report it for further investigation.

The driver side visor started sagging. for a while i could push it back up and it would stay. after a couple months, i could not use it on the side window, it just hung down. it finally was un-usable. toyota has replaced it, but it took 3 trips to the dealer to get it replaced. i had to drive without a visor for a week while they ordered part.

I was pulling into a parking space in a lot in front of a building. in a split second the car had jumped the curb up onto the sidewalk and crashed through the brick wall and window in front of me. i was applying the brake as hard as i could and tried and succeeded into shifting it into park. the airbags did not deploy and i was not injured and did not hurt anyone else - thank goodness. the only explanation other than unintended acceleration was that i hit the accelerator very hard and i do not believe i did that. i had not been distracted by anything and had no sense of my foot slipping from the brake or anything like that.

Approximately 5 minutes after i started up my car and began driving today i began to notice a strange and strong odor. i had my driver's side window down (power windows) and initially attributed the odor to a large truck that was several car lengths ahead of me. i noticed that the odor persisted even once the truck was no longer visible to me or in close proximity. at that point i then entered onto a major highway via the entrance ramp, and got my speed up to the speed limit of 65 miles per hour. as i was driving i noticed a large amount of smoke coming up from my power window switches on the driver's door. in addition to the smoke i could see an actual flame burning underneath the switches. my initial response was fear and panic, but i was able to find a safe spot to pull off to the side of the highway after a couple of minutes. my first thought was to dial 911, but i was afraid by the time someone arrived the car might burst into flames and blow up!! i immediately thought that i needed to try to extinguish the fire somehow as my car was filling with smoke and the odor was overwhelming. i quickly looked around to see if i had any bottled water in the car-but i did not. the only liquid i had accessible to dowse the flames was my iced coffee-so i poured a small amount over the smoke and flames coming from the switches to extinguish the fire, but it continued to burn. i then proceeded to pour half of my iced coffee over the switches which did finally extinguish the fire. as a result of the fire the only window that will actually move now is the driver's side window. the passenger's window will not move at all and the two rear windows will only move if using the switches on the back doors. as a result of the fire my car now has a very distinguishable burnt odor to it! needless to say this was one of the scariest experiences i have had when driving my car.

The vehicle, a 2008 toyota rav 4, was sitting at a complete stop at a red light with operator's foot on the brake waiting for the light to change. inexplicably and suddenly the engine revved to a high rpm and the vehicle lurched forward and struck the rear bumper of the vehicle in front. the collision was low speed and there were no injuries and no noticeable damage to either vehicle. we immediately drove the vehicle to the toyota dealership for evaluation.

While i was driving to work around the month of october, my car would be going around 40-50 mph and it will suddenly stall or power down and the car just shuts off in the middle of everything. its a good thing i go to work early around 4-5 am and traffic are low or i would be in major accident and at fault too? this continue to happen. sometime happens when i flash on high beam and even when the car is in low speed around 15-25mph or turning around a corner. there is never a check engine light. when my car goes into stall, all power dies and my radio/cd/mp3 player stop playing my dashboard becomes all pitch black and headlight all die as well. i don't know how to explain this its fustrating and scary, i'm the original owner and i bought it brand new from my local toyota dealership. i live in wisconsin and the snow is coming and toyota require me to leave the car with them for over a week or so, not a problem cause i dont want to drive it until its fix. its now after thanksgiving and the problem still occuring i took the car to the dealership today but they wont even look at it until i leave it with them for a week. i cant leave it there because i need a car for work so i had to arrange car rentals first with my own expense and will be dropping the car off saturday. the answers they already gave me was no clue and dont know whats wrong with it with no check engine code. i dont want to be another koua fong lee. i just want to post this up now see if anyone found a solution and for my reference if they cant fix it. i want someone to have my back. the car is a rav4 2008 with only 50,000 miles.

Yesterday, june 16, 2011, as i was driving my toyota 2008 rav4 (35,500 miles), the car accelerated uncontrollably. the car was still cold -- it was less than 2 miles after start-up. outdoor temp was about 65. no rain or inclement weather. i approached a red light very slowly, at less than 10 mph. as i was braking, i became aware that the car was not stopping. i braked harder and could feel the breaks engaging, but underneath that feeling was the feeling of the car continuing to accelerate and fight the brakes. i got the car stopped, but only after extremely hard braking. if there had been someone in the cross walk in front of me, i'd have hit them. the car was still trying to take off. i put the transmission in park and took my foot off the brake. by now the engine was screaming. i sat there for a couple of seconds, foot neither on the brake nor the accelerator and the car sounding as if it would soon explode, and finally just turned the car off and called a tow truck and took it to the dealership. the service writer was cold and distant, non-verbally making sure i understood that he thought i was either lying or blowing the incident out of proportion, while at the same time saying nothing that could actually be quoted as rude. a special technician is supposed to come out from toyota to look at the vehicle. based upon what others have experienced, i expect the dealership to do nothing. the car is clearly unsafe, and knowing that, i cannot ever drive it again.

While my wife attempted to park the vehicle head first, under normal conditions, at the street in front of our home, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. the acceleration occured while the vehicle was already nearly stopped, and caused her to hit another vehicle parked in front causing significant damage to both vehicles. even after our vehicle was stopped the engine kept accelerating, thus pushing the vehicle in front which we had collided into. the engine only stopped accelerating after my wife turned off the car. at no point did my wife step on the gas pedal, this was not a case of pedal confusion. her foot was on the brake (slowing down to park) before and after the vehicle started accelerating. the acceleration was quite severe, i am not sure the car could accelerate that fast even if the gas pedal was pushed all the way down intentionally. this is the fourth incident of unintended acceleration we've had with this vehicle. the three other incidents occurred on the highway. we complained to toyota in the summer of 2010, but they told us that the vehicle was not covered by the recall and we could do nothing about it. they refused to inspect the vehicle closely to determine the cause of the problem. in no case was the gas pedal stuck, or the floor mat was in the way. the vehicle simply accelerates without warning and at seemingly random times.this problem has caused over $4000 in damages in just the latest incident. when we reported the latest incident to toyota they claimed that this was a case of pedal confusion and dismissed our complaint. this was not a case of pedal confusion. my wife already had her foot on the brake slowing down to park the vehicle. only once the vehicle was nearly parked did the vehicle accelerate while my wife's foot was still on the brakes. our problem is being dismissed by toyota. surely other toyota vehicles are suffering the

While i was parking my car and stepping on the break pedal, the vehicle almost stopped then suddenly without my control sped up forward and crashed to two parked cars in front of my car at speed of 15 mph. when i tried to control the vehicle by lifting the emergency parking handle, the car reverse its direction backward and hit a building and stopped .the car's engine did not become idle while i was stepping on the break pedal and the car became without my control after slowed down to less than 5 5 mph and my feet were on the break pedal all the time .subsequently, i reported the accident to the west lapd and my insurance company. i was not under the influence of alcohol or any drugs .i have reported the accident to the manufacture of the car which sent an inspector to retrieve any information. subsequently, the inspector stated that my car has special acceleration pedal which operated by electronic throttle which could cause surging forward going from closed throttle to open throttle. in the meantime still waiting for the manufacture response to my claim. i am mature experienced responsible drive for years. please investigate my claim

Last night i experienced a sudden, unexpected increase in engine rpms while stopping and while stopped at a stop sign after my car had been driven approximately 1/4 mile on a cold engine (although the temp outside was in the 70s). the air conditioner may have been on in the car. i was just coming up to a stop at a stop sign when the engine suddenly began to roar and though i saw a car coming on the cross street, i couldn't understand why the car seemed to be hard to restrain from moving forward. i have an automatic 2008 rav4 v6 with about 15,000 miles, and i had my foot squarely on the brake. there is no floor mat as i removed that the first week of the news that mats could be a contributing cause to unintended accelaration. i am very familiar with the slight increase in rpms that happens when the air conditioning cycles, and this was several orders of magnitude beyond that. i immediately put the car in neutral and turned the ignition off. at that point, i smelled a very distinctive chemical smell, probably from the tires since the brake and the accelerator were both working at the same time. i started the car up again almost immediately and it was fine for the 10 minute drive home. the next morning i drove it to toyota and they ran a computer diagnostic on it and they said it showed nothing. they told me to monitor the car and note the tachometer reading if it ever happens again. to be honest, i always thought that people made too much of this problem, but then i never expected it to happen to me. i am reluctant to drive the car now, so i want it noted that this model and year of rav4 may also have this problem. it is possible that i turned the engine off so quickly that the computer didn't register the problem? i'm just glad that i wasn't on the open road, but at a stop sign when this happened so i was able to shut the car off immediately.

On my way to tufts medical in boston mass. i paid the last toll in and not 200 ft from the toll booth, my car stopped. my rav4 shut down and rolled back towards the toll booth (towards oncoming traffic). the car would not stop despite lifting the emergency brake. after turning the car off, it slowly stopped but, did continue to roll. mass state troopers arrived in about 5-7 minutes and placed his vehicle so that it would not roll into anyone. my car was towed back to the dealer while i rented a car to get back to western mass. the dealer has looked at the car 3 different times and found nothing. i can no longer transport my elderly mother to her appointments in boston without renting a car.

2008 toyota rav 4 limited has had handling issues on the freeway with stability. this has happened a couple of times. dealer says that nothing is wrong. previous time this occured, vehicle returned handling differently. considering the computer brain running this car, we believe they reset the computer. this is happening again. we are taking it in again.

My fiancee and i were driving, 2008 rav4/limited/v6/4wd. we were at a stop light. i was driving, i had my foot on the brake for about 30 seconds waiting for light to turn green. it was a busy intersection here in denver and there was a car in front of us. all of a sudden the accelerator took off and i could feel the car trying to move forward. luckily, i already had my foot on the brake and i pressed down even harder on the brake as i immediately put the car in neutral. when i put it in neutral the accelerator continued to rev higher than it was before. i slammed the gear shift into park and shut the car off. we were obviously shaken from this and just sat there for a minute as we realized what had just happened. my fiancee wanted to get out of the car and call a tow truck. i wanted to try and start the car again but leave it in park and test it out. i started the car without touching the brake and it did it again. every light on the dash board lit up like a christmas tree. we were in park so the car could not move but the rpm's were on the way to redlining and i turned off the car again. the lights around the speedometer had never lit up like that before. serioulsy every dummy light on the car was lit and flashing. we were completely scared at this point and we just turned on the emergency lights and just sat there in shock. we sat there for ten minutes at this busy intersection trying to fiqure out what to do. i decided to try it again and this time the car started normally. my fiancee was afraid to drive it but i assured her if it happend again i could just put it in neutral and we could pull over to the side of the road. we drove directly to the dealership. we explained what happened and they said the would check it out. they called later that day and said all the diagnostic tests were normal. they told me it must have been the floor mats. that is impossible since the floor mats weren't even touching accelerator. updated 05/12/10 *bf

I have a toyota rav4 2008. last year july to august within one month, my rav4 (less than 2 year driving) had happened 2 times engine dead problem during driving, where my vehicle drove down to the hill without any power, specially no brake at all. it was happened one time i was driving, and another time my wife driving. we sent to dealer but i was told there was no error code was found, and was told they communicated with toyota factory. no similar problem was found. we went through arbitration last year. but they said they cannot reduplicate the problem, so i cannot replace the car. but our family is really concerning to continuously drive this car since it is so dangerous, and we have no idea when it will die again during driving. it bothers us a lot, and no problem can be found by services. we just want to replace this car.
