Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2011 lexus lx570, 2003 through 2009 toyota 4runner, and 2006 through 2010 rav4 vehicles. the accelerator pedal can get stuck in the wide open position due to its being trapped by an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat.
Consequence SummaryA stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death.
Corrective SummaryThe remedy plan is under development, but will involve modification or replacement of the accelerator pedal and replacement of any toyota all-weather floor mat. toyota has not provided a schedule for owner notification at this time. further information concerning the remedy and the owner notification schedule is expected from toyota. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or lexus at 1-800-255-3987.
NotesToyota's recall campaign numbers are 90l (toyota) and 90lg (lexus).customers may contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safercar.gov.this recall is an expansion of safety recalls 09v-388 and 10v-023.

Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 avalon, model year 2007-2010 camry, model year 2009-2010 corolla, corolla matrix, rav4, model year 2010 highlander, model year 2008-2010 sequoia, and model year 2007-2010 tundra vehicles. due to the manner in which the friction lever interacts with the sliding surface of the accelerator pedal inside the pedal sensor assembly, the sliding surface of the lever may become smooth during vehicle operation. in this condition, if condensation occurs on the surface, as may occur from heater operation (without a/c) when the pedal assembly is cold, the friction when the accelerator pedal is operated may increase, which may result in the accelerator pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.
Consequence SummaryThe accelerator pedal may become hard to depress, slow to return to idle, or, in the worst case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a reinforcement bar in the accelerator pedal which will allow the pedal to operate smoothly. gm will notify owners for the pontiac vibe please see 10v-018. this service will be performed free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin early february and will be completed in late april 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

On september 26, 2007, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that some of its model year (my) 2007 and 2008 lexus e350 and toyota camry vehicles could experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the optional all weather floor mat offered on those vehicles and the vehicles' accelerator pedal.this decision was influenced by an office of defects investigation (odi) engineering analysis.this recall was designated 07e082.two years later, on october 5, 2009, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that a number of its my 2004-2009 lexus and toyota vehicles may also experience unintended and uncontrolled acceleration due to interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver's floor mat.this recall was designated 09v388.several months later, on january 27, 2010, toyota filed an amended, or supplemental, defect information report and expanded the population of vehicles to include additional my 2008-2010 toyota and lexus vehicles.since this expansiontook place in a different calendar year, this recall was designated 10v023.separately on january 21, 2010, toyota filed a defect information report and notified nhtsa that certain toyota vehicles and certain pontiac vibe vehicles contained a safety defect in the accelerator pedal assembly that may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return, or in the worse case, mechanically stuck in a partially depressed position.nhtsa designated this recall 10v017.in total, the four recalls cover over 7.6 million toyota and lexus vehicles as well as the pontiac vibe product made by new united motor manufacturing, inc., a venture of toyota and general motors corporation.nhtsa requires additional information from toyota to more fully understand and evaluate, among other things, whether the scope of the recalls identified above (makes, models and model years) is sufficiently broad.the agency is seeking to determine whether toyota viewed the underlying defects too narrowly as interference between the accelerator pedal and the driver

I was stopped at a stoplight at about 4:00 pm with my foot fully on the brake. while waiting for the light to change, the car went into a high idle. i pressed the brake pedal firmly, but the car was lurching, trying to accelerate. i put the car into park and it made a horrible noise. it stayed in high idle for several more seconds, but then seemed to kick itself out of that idle. i thought the car may have died. the light turned green, so i gently put it into drive (again thinking that it may have died), but it was still running, so i drove across the intersection, went to a parking lot, and called the dealer. the service advisor said that i should have the car towed in (at my expense), which was not acceptable to me. i called the toyota 800 number and they also said that they would not pay for any of the expenses. they said that if something was found wrong with the car, they would reimburse me. i drove the car to the dealership that night. the advisor told me that they would need to keep the car until the regional manager could come, which would be several days. they called me the next afternoon to say that the dealership had run all tests, and found nothing wrong with the car, and that they had never heard of the rav 4 having this issue. they said they could keep the car until the regional manager could come, which was now estimated to be 2-3 weeks. they said he would run the exact same tests on the vehicle as they had run. i went and picked up the vehicle. i went into the dealership yesterday and met with the service and sales managers. they advised me that though they were not saying they didn't believe me about the incident, they could not duplicate the problem, so there was nothing else they could do, except to help me get out of my lease and into another toyota vehicle. i opted to trade my rav 4 in and am now leasing a camry.

At approximately 18:30 on december 27, 2011, i experienced an unintended acceleration event in my 2010 toyota rav4. i was stopping for a red light on pacific coast highway in seal beach, california at the corner of first street when i noticed it was difficult to apply the brake, and the car did not appear to want to stop. i applied the brake more forcefully and was eventually able to stop in the left hand turn lane, however the car kept lurching forward as if it wanted to break free of the brake. having heard the widespread publicity regarding the unintended acceleration problem in toyota vehicles, and having previously experienced the problem on one occasion over a year earlier, i thought this might be the issue. i put the car into park and the engine immediately revved up to an alarming rate. i turned off the ignition in panic before i was able to look at the tachometer. however, judging by the sound and later experimentation with revving while parked, i believe the rpm must have been in the 4000-5000 range at the time of the incident. i was particularly shaken by this event because i had already had the recall service performed that was supposedly intended to address the unintended acceleration issue. this recall service was performed may 10, 2011 at desert toyota in tucson, arizona. i had experience the unintended acceleration issue once before, but it was not nearly as dramatic. i do not recall the details, but it was in southern arizona in early 2011 and my memory is that tapping the accelerator and brake pedals restored the car's operation to normal fairly quickly. i was little concerned about it happening again since the recall service had been performed.

With the vehicle in park and the brake pedal depressed, the engine reved immediately to around 6000 rpm when started. i turned off the engine without shifting out of park, got out of the car, and visually checked the floormat. it was not touching the throttle pedal and the throttle pedal did not appear to be depressed. after approximately 1 minute i started the engine a second time and the same thing occurred. i then waited approximately 5 minutes, pumped the throttle pedal several times, then started the vehicle a third time. this time the vehicle started normally (engine idling). i then drove home without further reving issues and have not had any reoccurence since the incident date. i took the vehicle to a local toyota dealership for service the next day and was told that it was a floormat issue, and my driverside floormat was removed by the dealership. i disagree with this assessment. it is important to note that before i had the reving issue upon starting the vehicle, my last interaction with the vehicle was to have my foot completely off the gas pedal as i was steering the car into a parking space, when i was using only the brake pedal to moderate my speed, with no throttle pedal pressure being applied by me, and with the engine idling, as is normal. do not see how this could be a residual stuck throttle pedal issue when i returned to my automoble and started the engine to drive away. the only other factor which may (or may not) be relevent was that when i turned the engine off after parking, i did not first turn the radio off, which i usually do. i believe i was tuned to a satellite station at that time (xm).

As i applied the brakes to stop from 45 mph, the car continued to move at the same speed. i increased pressure on the the brake pedal, but the car did not slow down. finally, after about three seconds, the car seemed to downshift, and the brakes engaged. i ended up halfway through the intersection. the conditions were warm and dry, and the traffic was light. this is a stock car with no modifications. we had already taken the car in for the recall adjustments to the accelerator pedal and the floor mats as directed by toyota in 2010 and 2011. at the time of the incident, it seemed to me that the lack of braking was not mechanical, but electronic. it seemed that the brakes were locked out while the car continued to drive forward at the same speed. when the car downshifted and revved a little, the brakes suddenly came back online, and we came to a stop. this is the first time we have had a problem like this. we will contact toyota and see what they advise.

On december 24, 2010 my father experienced a third incident of unintended acceleration in his 2010 toyota rav. despite having already preformed all the necessary recall fixes, extensive testing by 2 toyota dealerships and even having the entire gas pedal replaced, the car malfunctioned. the engine began to rev at a high rate as he slowed for a 4-way stop. his foot was firmly on the brake, not the gas pedal as toyota likes to contend. the brake was not fully responsive and he had to lift his foot from the brake and depress it a second time to bring the car to a stop, though the engine continued to race. his foot was not touching the accelerator. he was fortunate to be driving at a slow enough speed and traffic was light at the time so he was able to avoid an accident. he contacted the dealership and they have tested the car (again) and still can not find any problem (again). now they said they need to keep the car for 4 more weeks till a rep arrives in the area for more testing.

My 2010 toyota rav4 was stopped at a traffic light, with my foot on the brakes. the car slowly began accelerating despite normal pressure being applied to the brakes, and then suddenly the engine began revving loudly and the car began to accelerate more quickly. the car accelerated to perhaps a few miles an hour into the intersection before i was able to stop it by applying heavy pressure on the brakes and also applying the parking brake. after i was able to stop the car, the engine continued to rev increasingly loudly for several more seconds (with obvious power that i could easily feel trying to overcome the brakes i was applying) until i was able to shut the engine off with the ignition switch. the incident did not result in an accident. being in a busy and dangerous intersection, i decided to restart the car and drive it with extreme caution to a safe area to park. when restarted, the car operated normally and presented no further problems. the car's air conditioning and satellite radio were operating at the time of the incident. weather conditions were clear and sunny, and the roads were dry. the car does have a rubber all-weather floor mat on the driver's side, which was secured by hooks installed by the toyota dealership where i purchased the car. the edge of the floor mat is several inches away from the accelerator pedal when it is fully depressed, and the mat itself will not physically move or slide even when purposefully trying to move it with force. i'm absolutely certain that it did not move or otherwise interfere with the accelerator pedal. this is the first and only time that i have experienced this problem. after the incident, i drove the car with extreme care to my toyota dealership (and experienced no further problems), where it is now being held for inspection. the car's mileage at the time of the incident was approximately 6,200 miles. it was also serviced by toyota several months ago in response to the recall relating to unintended acceleration.

Problem: accelerator stuck in 2010 toyota rav4 on 3/31/10, while at low speed and slowing for a stop light, my accelerator stuck, impairing my ability to stop. i pressed firmly on the brake, then engine continued to race. while continuing to press the brake, i put the car in neutral, then into park. the car stopped. i am surprised i did not rear end the vehicle in front of me. i drove carefully to the rochester toyota dealership, just minutes away. i spoke with the service manager. this vehicle is one involved in the current toyota recall. i had the accelerator repair made on march 5, 2010. i had not experienced any accelerator problem before today. i explained to the manager my concern that the true problem with uncontrolled acceleration has not been identified, thus my problem occurred despite the prior replacement of my pedal. i phone the toyota 800 number an made a report. neither the toyota service manager nor the person at the 800 number could assure me that these incidents are being documented or evaluated individually or as a group. i find this very unsettling, and i'm concerned for my safety and the safety of others in and around toyota vehicles.

On 1/28/10 as i slowed for a traffic light the rav4 started to highly rev up.( my foot was on the brake not on the accelerator) yet it sounded as if it was going to speed up for no reason. it didn't actually accelerated. i was able to throw the gear into park and it stopped. that same day i brought it to the dealer and they said they fixed it as per the recall. on 3/11/10 i was talking with someone who was outside the vehicle. i was at a full stop with my foot on the brake but still in drive. the same high reving again happened. i again threw the gear into park and the reving stopped. i brought the vehicle back to the dealer. they inspected the vehicle and they had a toyota field tech inspect the vehicle. they found nothing wrong with the pedal. i have witnesses to both events. there is some problem if it isn't the pedal, it is something else. vehicles don't rev by themselves. i refuse to drive the vehicle and i have notified totyota. please advise and help me i like the vehicle otherwise.

I was leaving my home in my 2010 toyota rav4. i put the car in reverse and it instantly began to accelerate at a very high speed. i immediately pressed down on the brakes as hard as i could. however nothing occured the car continued to reverse rapidly. i shifted into neutral but it was a small space and by then i was near the stone fixture which the vehicle hit. the fixture which was solid stone was in the ground, it was uprooted by the vehicle. in order for an object like this to be uprooted a great deal of speed would need to be involved. my driveway is on an incline and i never press on the gas pedal while reversing as the vehicle will reverse on its own due to the inclination.

My rav4 was part of the recall. one, i bought my car on 1/18/10. i heard toyota filed their claim on 1/21/10. the recall was announced on 1/26/10. i waited until beginning of march for recall letter as instructed by toyota and i never received the recall letter. i contacted the dealership and was told that toyota doesn't send out recall letters and that i should come in for recall. last saturday the pedal was fixed but there is a brake lag, meaning the car will not stop in time, you really have to put a lot of pressure to stop the vehicle. as per dealer, they don't see anything wrong with the car and when i asked them can they tell me if the car is safe to drive they told me that toyota can not make those guarantees. i don't feel safe driving this car and want to return it since as per toyota if the car was purchased/leased within 5 days of recall/production stoppage they will take it back. i contacted the dealership and they told me that i should contact toyota directly which i did and nobody is answering the phone-its always busy. on their website, it does indicate that they will work on case by case basis for take backs but nobody from toyota is willing to help. how do i proceed? can anybody help me? *tr

My rav4 was part of the recall. one, i bought my car on 1/22/10. i heard toyota filed their claim on 1/21/10. the recall was announced on 1/26/10. i feel the dealers most have known what was happening and sold me my car anyway. on the toyota website it stated if you bought your car within 5 days of the recall the dealer would take it back. when i called the dealer they said they never heard anything like that and redirected my call to their service department, who told me there wasn't a fix yet and i was to wait to be notified. i wanted information on the general manager or district manager and was told i could find it on the website. from there i didn't know who to talk to. i have been sick to my stomach ever since. two, i never received any information about the recall. i had to call the toyota hotline and they also said to wait for notification. three, never receiving a postcard, i finally called a dealer and arranged for my car to be fixed. i was experiencing random acceleration when the car was hot and cold. four, after the fix the car continues to do this. it will accelerate rapidly, decelerate and then run smoothly again. it does this randomly. it is quite nerve racking when this happens. i don't know what to do. i have a young son which i transport on a daily bases. i am scared to death to drive a car i waited 12 years to buy. *tr

Just another unsatisfied, unhappy, and scared for my life toyota owner! the repair for the recall for the accelerator pedal has not fixed the problem. it takes too much effort to apply the brakes and the accelerator sticks sometimes. braking is becoming a major issue for me-i've never had to apply so much pressure before. i'm used to letting my foot off the gas, letting the car slow down itself, then gently applying the brakes as needed (mostly at stoplights so i don't have to accelerate as much when it turns green). the car really doesn't slow down like it should, requiring me to apply unnecessary pressure to the brake to slow down. dealer replaced the pedal or repaired it for the recall but nothing has changed. *tr
