Defect SummaryOn certain vehicles, due to improper assembly of the air bag inflator, which is used in the side air bag, the curtain shield air bag, and the knee air bag assembly, some inflators were produced with an insufficient amount of the heating agents necessary for proper air bag deployment. in this condition, the expansion force of the gas may be insufficient to properly inflate the air bag when the srs system is activated during a crash.
Consequence SummaryThis may increase the risk of injury to the occupant in the involved seating position in the event of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the specific srs air bag. the recall began on april 6, 2006. owners may contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371, scion at 1-866-548-1851, or lexus at 1-800-255-3987.

Defect SummaryOn certain vehicles, the side impact seat-bolster and curtain side airbags may inadvertently deploy. this condition can occur if the door for that side of the vehicle is closed with a high rate of force while the vehicle's ignition is in the on position or within 90 seconds of turning the ignition key from the on position to the off position.
Consequence SummaryIf the side impact seat-bolster and curtain side airbags inadvertently deploy, they could cause personal injury if an occupant is seated on the same side of the vehicle as the door that is closed with a high rate of force. until the repair has been performed, it is recommended that a minimal force/speed be used to close the driver and passenger doors or closing the doors after 90 seconds have elapsed from turning the ignition key from the on to the off position.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the two side impact airbag sensors and install a urethane pad in the front doors, if necessary, free of charge. the recall began on november 6, 2006. owners may contact toyota at 1-866-548-1851.

Our daughters 2005 scion tc was in an accident that was a head on collision she lost control on black ice and hit a pole. her car has been deemed totaled by the insurance and body shop due to the severe damage to the car. she has numerous injuries from this accident and the air bags not deploying. it is very strange when i called toyota they claim there are no recalls for airbags which i see in fact there is by this website. they also state that the airbags would not deploy in this type of accident , with her hitting the pole direct and the car being totaled because of the damage how can they say this? they have not even seen the car and over the phone they are stating the airbags would not go off in this type of accident. sounds like toyota needs to get their facts straight. thank god my daughter is still here, she had an angel looking after her that night because it certainly was not toyota.

Purchased 2005 scion tc new on 12/29/2004 have had several problems with interior trim and paint. then last june (2009) when opening the trunk (hatch back) the latch plate came off the car in my hand hanging by a cord. this plate is made of very thin plastic and attatched to the car with thin plastic clips. the clips are not strong enough to with stand the constant use and amount of upward pressure it takes to raise the hatch. in december 2009 the lever on the drivers seat back to move the seat forward to allow passengers in the back stuck and would'nt move. couple days later the lever would move but did'nt work. the seat back can only be moved now using the lever at the side of the seat bottom. the car had less than 50,000 miles on it when the trunk/hatch peice broke off and under 60,000 miles when the seat lever stopped working. all the interior trim peices that line the hatch window have broken off and they are also only held in place with these very flimsy plastic clips. the drivers side front pillar airbag cover has been falling off since the 3-4 month i owned the car the dealer has tried to repair and still whrn you shut the door or just driving the cover falls off.

Hi, i was involved in a car accident december 2, 2009. i own a scion tc 2005 model. i was traveling on highway 440 outer beltline near ext 7 glenwood avenue. it was raining heavily at approximately 6:30pm when i hit a puddle in the left far lane and began hydroplaning, i hit the car next to me on my passenger side and started spinning approximately 4-5 times and hit the cement barrier on the bridge of crabtree creek. i hit the barrier head on and the spun around again and hit the back drivers side on the cement as well. my car ended against the cement barrier on the far right side of the road facing the wrong direction. my complaint is that my airbags never deployed. luckily i was not severely injured but hitting head on it is my opinion and that of the owner of the collision repair shop that my car was brought to, that the air bags should have deployed for safety reasons. i was driving at a speed of approximately 50 miles per hour, no more then 55. i have done research that shows it only take speeds of 8-14 mph that the air bags should go off at a sudden deceleration, and i was certainly going faster then that. there were a few recalls on the airbags on my make and model of vehicle but these were mostly pertaining to the side and knee bags. i have filed a claim with the toyota/scion customer service representatives and sent them pictures and i do have a case number with them. the dot people that came to the site of the crash had mentioned that this site of road is being investigated for previous accidents. *tr

My son was involved in an accident involving his 2005 scion tc hatchback. the right front tire left the road and he attempted to correct this. when he corrected, the back end of the car went out from under his control. he crossed the center line and entered the ditch on the left side of the road. he hit a driveway culvert head on. the car then flipped end over end and turned sideways before it landed nose down in a ditch approximately 40 feet from initial impact. neither the driver or front passenger airbags deployed. he and i have attempted to contact scion for assistance, they have given us no help. could you please help us out? *tr

My 2005 scion tc surges/lurches forward when resuming from a stop. the amount of pressure you apply to the gas pedal has no effect on how the car is going to move forward. the problem was very intermittent and hard to notice but started happening more and more often as of aug./sept. 2008. in mid sept. i almost rear ended the car in front of me taking off from a stop light. i took the car to the selling dealership and the service mgr. went on a test drive and said he noticed the problem at least 5 times in a few mile drive. when i picked my car up 2 days later the service invoice stated unable to duplicate and it was recommended i have a 30,000 mile maint. done i had just had those services done 1 month earlier and they were aware of that. it was then recommended that i switch gas stations and use high octane fuel and use a fuel injection cleaner purchased from any gas station, then if no improvement further diagnostics would be needed but no codes in the ecu. i followed the recommendations for over 2 months and no change. went back to the same dealership and was told nothing could be done and even with an extended warranty the regional service mgr sent to inspect my car did not inspect it and refused to authorize the repair and submit the claim under the extended warranty. i also at this time reminded them that the speedometer does not work all the time. and when it doesn't work and the car is idling the speedometer shows a speed of 5-10 miles per hour, yet while driving shows a speed of 0. i also pointed out that the drivers side pillar airbag cover they fixed weeks ago is hanging loose. it comes off every time you shut the door. this has been repaired at least twice before. they refused to acknowledge this problem as well. my car has or is having about 95% of the items displayed in your service bulletins, seatbelts, airbags, fuel injectors, window controls, sun roof, air condition and tire pressure monitor system. and the dealership aware of all of them. *tr

Scion admits there is a problem with the combination of accessories:1) auto-dimming mirror and 2) side curtain air bags. when the mirror is installed there is a chance that the wiring obstructs the air bags. they claim a tsb will be issued but can give me no time line for the issue of a new wiring harness. dealers will not even pull the driver's a pillar trim to see if the wiring happens to be correct. so, we just wait ... and wait ... and wait and pray that there is no need for the airbags to function. there is also a problem with the lid covering the radio. it functions when it wants - often taking many attempts to get it to open. on the open road this is quite a distraction. we all know how many accidents are cause by such minor distractions as tuning the radio, talking on my phone, etc. *nm
