Odi's investigation discloses that the subject vehicles sustain moonroof shattering and/or damage at rates comparable to those for most other similarly equipped vehicles.this review also discloses that such incidents occur in most vehicles with moonroofs and that while tempered glass panels commonly used in moonroof fabrication are shatter-resistant, some catastrophic failures do in fact occur.impact with small stones or road debris may result in immediate or delayed shatter incidents, depending on the extent and nature of damage sustained by the glass moonroof panel.the manufacturer concludes that incidents of moonroof shatter are random occurrences that result primarily from impact with small stones or other objects while the vehicle is in motion. a safety-related defect trend has not been identified and this pe has been closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

The manufacturer notified nhtsa by letter dated october 17, 2005, that a safety recall has been initiated.nhtsa has assigned no.05v-483 to the recall.the corrective action will consist of installing a plastic film to the inside surface of the wind deflector glass.the corrective action will be performed on approximately 71,400 my 2005 and 2006 scion tc vehicles manufactured during the period of march 12, 2004 through july 21, 2005. based on this action, the subject ea has been closed.
PE05021TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.04/28/200508/26/2005SUN/MOON ROOF WIND DEFLECTOR BREAKAGE
The manufacturer states that there are no indications of deficiencies in the design, manufacture, or assembly of the wind deflector that may account for the incidents reported.the manufacturer also believes that impact of airborne road debris with the wind deflector is the probable cause for the incidents reported.odi's analyses of the warranty data indicate that incidents of wind deflector breakage while driving will continue to occur over time, as the population and on-road exposure of the subject vehicles increase.the evidence indicates that regardless of the cause for such breakage, the broken glass particles and fragments may fall directly onto the front seat occupants of these vehicles.these occurrences may pose a risk of driver distraction and personal injury.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-013) to further assess this matter.

I was driving up i-25, when the vehicle in front of me kicked up a rock. the rock hit the top of the sunroof, shattering it into pieces. a lot of sharp glass landed on myself the driver and in the passenger seat. the vehicles behind me were showered in glass. to repair this i had to purchase a costly new sunroof panel and i am going to have it clear brand so that if it happens again it does not injure any one. i received cuts from the broken glass falling on to me. *tr

I was driving on the highway at about 45mph when i heard a loud explosion. i immediately pulled over thinking a tire had blown and found that the moonroof glass had shattered. the glass was bowed upward in the center indicating it had broken due to stress. the windshield and the wind deflector did not break at all nor receive any damage. the glass was not impacted by any foreign object. *tr

Incident occurred on 9/30/08 at ~3:15pm. i heard a loud bang (sounded like a shotgun blast) while driving on the highway at ~60mph. my immediate reaction was to duck...i literally thought someone was shooting at me. after a quick second to collect my wits, i looked around and saw no damage. once that soaked in, i realized i heard wind noise (i remember thinking that was odd because windows were up and sunroof was closed). i pulled back the sunroof screen and, to my astonishment, saw that the sunroof had spiderwebbed into thousands of tiny pieces...pieces that were already starting to fly off into traffic behind me. i pulled over and got out to look at the damage. the sunroof looked like something had blasted it from the inside out. i cleaned up the glass the best i could on the side of the highway and headed straight for the dealer. i had heard of deflector shattering (recall was completed on my deflector), but not the sunroof. the dealer refuses to pay for the sunroof even though i have the extended warranty. they claim that it was caused by a road hazard. the weather was mild, nothing hit my sunroof from the outside and, based on similar instances filed here, i firmly believe there is a defect with the design. toyota should do the right thing, fix this issue and honor their warranties. *tr

Scion admits there is a problem with the combination of accessories:1) auto-dimming mirror and 2) side curtain air bags. when the mirror is installed there is a chance that the wiring obstructs the air bags. they claim a tsb will be issued but can give me no time line for the issue of a new wiring harness. dealers will not even pull the driver's a pillar trim to see if the wiring happens to be correct. so, we just wait ... and wait ... and wait and pray that there is no need for the airbags to function. there is also a problem with the lid covering the radio. it functions when it wants - often taking many attempts to get it to open. on the open road this is quite a distraction. we all know how many accidents are cause by such minor distractions as tuning the radio, talking on my phone, etc. *nm

I was driving on an interstate highway at approximately 60 mph with all the windows closed, including the sunroof. both the sunroof had the shades pulled as well. the outside temperature was about 85 degrees, and the a/c was running in the car. suddenly, i heard an extremely loud pop which sounded like a gun shot. seconds later, i heard bits of glass bouncing down the back of the car. i opened the shade of the sun oof only slightly enough to see that the entire sun roof shattered and as i drove, chunks of the glass were flying off the car. when i was able to pull off and assess the window it almost appeared as if it had been hit from the inside. the glass around the entire portion of the window was broken and pulling away from the sides and it puckered up toward the center of the window. this was an extremely distracting incident, and potentially dangerous. i was lucky to have the shades pulled so that the glass did not fall into the car. we had previously taken the car to dealer to have the deflector shield treated because of the recall. *ak

Looping to the ramp around 40 mph entering freeway, sunroof shattered due to the side metal frame that was attached/glued to the glass gave in and the sunroof was not even opened. brought to dealership, took pictures of the shattered sunroof and sent to manufacturer. next day, toyota said it was a road hazard. i told them how could that be if the side metal frame gave in and they know there was no evidence of any materials or rock that hits the sunroof. *tr

Purchased my vehicle in march 2005. i have had it in the shop three (3) times for the moon roof. the moon roof rattles horribly and the dealership as taken the glass out and replaced it saying that toyota has done all that they know what to do with that particular situation. i find this unacceptable. i have also had my car in the shop five (5) times for the back hatch. the hatch makes a horrible rattle when just driving on regular roads. this problem is still unfixed. my paint as with the numerous other amounts of complaints is chipping and bubbling up. it horrifies me to read all of these complaints regarding this vehicle. i can only anticipate on what could happen next. *nm

The wind deflector for my sunroof on my 2006 scion tc was shattered on sept 22, 2006 1) i was driving with my sunroof open on the street (no freeway). i closed the roof and went into work. at lunch time i made several stops (never opening the sunroof) and after coming back from the last store, i found the wind deflector shattered. i never heard anything hit my car. i did have the recall laminate in place but there was glass shards and pieces from the edges and the bottom. both dealers i went to cannot tell how the damage happened since the whole thing is shattered. there is no sign of a rock hitting it. 2) i cannot open sunroof or window for fear more glass will break off into my car. 3) i have gone to 2 dealerships (toyota) and both told me to that my insurance will have to pay for the damage. part has to be ordered through deal only. the first dealer was not helpful and even told me any glass place could replace which turned out to not be true. i am in the process of getting my insurance to pay for repair so i am still driving around with shattered glass (at least the 2nd dealer taped it so i don't lose a lot more glass).*jb

June 14, 2006. was driving on the highway at around 65 mph with no other cars in front of me or to the side of me. suddenly, without warning, the power moonroof of the car shattered, with a large portion of the glass entering the passenger cabin and striking me (the driver). besides minor scratches and bruises from the falling glass and sunroof assembly, i did not suffer any injury. drove immediately to the dealer, who provided me with a rental car while my car was being repaired. upon picking up the car 4 days later, i was told that besides the glass, the entire sunroof assembly had to be replaced. was also told that they could not find the cause of the failure. pictures of the damage would be available upon request, if needed. *jb

While driving my 2005 scion tc on the interstate highway, i heard a loud pop. after the pop i heard glass shattering and flying off the top of the car. the only thing protecting me from shattering glass was the sun shade. yet, almost immediately glass started coming through the vent holes on the sun shade and falling down on my head and flying in from the sides. when i stopped to look at what had happened, it appeared that the top sun roof had exploded. nothing had hit the car from the outside that i was aware of. i know that i would have seen it or heard something hit the car, not the loud pop that sounded like an explosion. i looked on your site and was able to see that other owners of scions have experienced this same problem. i am waiting on toyota to determine how this will be fixed and if they will cover it. i will file a claim against them if they do not, as i think this should be a warranty issue or a safety issue with the dealer. i noticed on one complaint that the individual was forced to pay $900. for the repair themselves. *jb phone interview confirmed that it was the sun/moon roof that shattered.

I was cruising in my 2005 scion tc at approximately 40 mph on a smooth road with the moon roof closed. air temperature was in the high 90s and, as i had been driving about an hour, the interior had been cooled by the a/c. there was no traffic within sight either ahead or behind me and no trees, overpass, etc., above. i heard a loud gunshot-sounding bang and found, when i pulled over, that the glass of the front wind deflector of the moonroof had shattered. there was no evidence of any object impacting the glass. because the moonroof had been closed, glass particles did not enter the passenger compartment. the moonroof wind deflector glass was replaced by my local authorized dealer under warranty (after i called their attention to similar failures of other vehicles); the fragments of the old glass were removed and disposed of by the dealer. subsequent to that, a safety recall notice (#ssc 50s) was received from the manufacturer and a protective laminate was applied to prevent glass fragments from entering the passenger compartment in the event a recurrence of the failure is experienced when the moonroof is in the open position. contrary to this manufacturer's recall notice, i was not driving with the moonroof open, i was not driving at highway speeds and the glass was not impacted by road debris. i feel there is a flaw in the manufacturing process of the glass used in the tc's moonroof. *nm

I was driving my 2005 scion tc on the freeway with the sunroof closed. i heard a loud breaking sound and saw glass fly onto the freeway from my car. i pulled off the freeway and noticed that the glass from the deflector of the sunroof had shattered. the freeway was empty and nothing, not even a rock, had hit my car. i am not sure how it happened- but now i see lots of reports of this happening. i am just lucky that this happened when my sunroof was closed. i was also informed by toyota that this would cost me $900 to fix. they were not going to cover it. i plan to fight this as it is supposed to be designed to perform under normal operating conditions. it sounds like faulty installation to me. *nm

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 scion tc since purchase on 7/16/2004. the day after purchase the front tire was sitting on the rim. terrible problems with scratches it seems as though you look at it and it scratches and the paint is peeling and bubbling all over, the power lock button fell inside the door within the 1st week i had the car. have been to dealership 3 different times concerning the sunroof making terrible rattling noises and it sounds like the whole top of the car is moving when you make a turn, then after it rains, i live in fl and no visible water is on the top, open the window and water on the lip of the sunroof leaks water all over you. they have took the car apart for sun roof and can't fix, tore out the headliner. also the inside metallic parts scratch easily, the dealership tech destroyed the part around the gear shift. my car insurance has doubled since i bought this car because of accidents i have less than 9,000 miles on this car, have met with gm, and everyone thinks your crazy. this is the worst car i have ever purchased and it has been nothing but a nightmare, the people at the dealership say oh your the only one with the paint problem , it's wear and tear, yet we have another new vehicle that gets driven to work every day and the paint looks better than my car. i am very disappointed with toyota and i traded in a toyota to get this car, i guarantee you i will never buy another scion, i have wondered why they are not advertised on tv, now i know why. i spend my time going to the doctors and the dealership being treated like an idiot. they kept my car 5 days last time and want it again. if your car leaks like mine please report it as they have had an outside rain doctor check it out an it says it's designed that way, yat it did not do this in the beginning. i hate to trade it in and pass this nightmare on to someone else. i have come across tons of complaints and many service advisories.*jb

While driving my 2005 scion tc i heard a loud pop and the back moon roof had cracked. it was the same type of noise i heard when my front deflector shattered. the moon roof did not cave in when it first happened it was just spider web cracked throughout. but on the way to the dealership part of the middle ended up caving in. the dealership said because the glass was angled up it was like something from inside or pressure caused it. if something had fallen on it the glass would have been angled downwards. it was replaced but only after much questioning because this was the second time it had happened and supposedly i have been the only one to have had these problems. i am currently waiting on parts to come in that they broke while repairing the moon roof.

While driving with the sun roof open, the front deflector of the assembly shattered, spraying pieces of broken glass into the passenger compartment, causing me to lose control of the vehicle as i was hit in the face and head by glass. i was able to maintain control of the car as a piece of glass hit my sunglass lens, saving me from a possible eye injury. the interior of the car was littered with sharp, jagged pieces of glass and thankfully i was alone in the vehicle, saving a passenger from possible injury. i have yet to contact a dealer or scion but will do so after the weekend. i am aware of other reports and complaints with regard to the same thing happing to others. scion obviously engineered a fragile piece of glass designed to stand nearly perpendicular to the road with the vehicle in motion and sun roof open. i have recently noticed a popping sound coming from the roof indicating to me some sort of stress in the structure. while not injured during the incident, i did get cut cleaning the sharp glass from the interior of the car. the vehicle i am reporting is a 2005 scin tc. i might also note that the 888 phone number listed on this page is not operable.*ak

(i've only had the car a month.) i am currently awaiting for the piece to come in. this has happened at least one other time that i've heard of from a scion web site. i can only imagine what could have happened if i hadn't ducked down when i heard the crack. even with ducking down i had glass down the front of my shirt, the back of my shirt and in between my back the the seat of the car.*ak

Car: 2005 scion tc purchased: mcgee toyota of hanover, ma in may 2007. -emergency brake failing 2 weeks after purchase, which caused an accident. -the dealership misdiagnosing the wheel bearing (2-3 times, finally fixing it). -we've been to mcgee toyota probably 5+ times now, and woburn toyota twice, all for problems with a 2005 scion tc. one of the other issues was when my wife bought the car, she bought a toyota extended warranty. we noticed a few weeks after purchase that the weather stripping was dry-rotting, and woburn toyota said they wouldn't replace it since it wasn't a factory windshield. we were originally told by mcgee toyota that we could take this car to any toyota dealership and the warranty would be valid. why were we not told by mcgee toyota when she bought the car, that the windshield had been replaced? mr murphy said he would do anything in his power to make us happy. mr murphy said he would replace all four tires on the car (because we also noticed there were 3 different tires on the car), as well as replace the windshield for us. we picked the car up yesterday, to find her seats leaned back (it looked like some teenage kids just got done joy-riding), two bubbles in the middle of the new(another aftermarket windshield, which is not covered under warranty ? again!) windshield, a loud squeal coming from the engine when revved, and the clutch making a very loud and noticeable squeak when depressed. it seems that when we bring the car in for something, we leave with 2-3 more problems. when addressed by a manager, it comes to no avail. i attempted to talk with a manager about those issues, and when i refused to shake his hand, we were asked to leave! there are many more issues with this car, which are too many to list in this initial complaint. *tr
