The handle for the back hatch on my 2006 scion xb has broken. it is still connected by the wires. the handle is very flimsy and there is nothing else to grab onto when trying to open the hatch. i haven't gotten it into the dealer yet, so i don't know how much it will be to fix. *tr

The front windshield of my 2006 scion xb developed a crack while i was driving and no other cars were in front of me to toss rocks. there was no impact from a rock or anything before the crack appeared. i heard a pop and discovered the crack. the pop sound was not the normal rock on the windshield sound. there is no sign of any impact on the outside of the windshield in this area. the crack developed in the area behind the rearview mirror and is an l shaped crack. the first day the crack was about 8-10 in length and has progressed another 2-4 over the last four months. i feel there is a problem with the design of this vehicle that is causing so many xb owners to have the exact same issue. *tr

I bought a used '06 scion xb in aug. '07 & w/in a week my windshield(ws) was leaking bigtime. there were no cracks & the carfax report came back clean w/ no prior accidents. i called the dealer & since it was under warranty they had a local ws co. replace the ws. that weekend i washed my car & noticed water running down the inside of the ws again by the rearview mirror. still no obvious reason of why it should be leaking. i was extremely concerned about electrical issues w/ the water & the fact that i live in portland which meant lots of rain. i called the dealer again & this time i asked for another co. to replace the glass, thinking the other co. had just done a bad job. after the 2nd time of fixing it i thought everything was fine until i noticed loud popping & cracking noises while driving. a couple of the pops were so loud it scared me because it sounded like the whole ws cracked, but there were no visible cracks. just in case i was hearing things, i had my husband ride along & he heard the same noises. a week or two later, i noticed that when the ws was fogging there were stream lines from water on the left inside and i knew those shouldn't be there because the last co. had put in a brand new ws. later, i finally noticed water dripping in the same spot & i knew it was leaking again. frustrated & not wanting to deal w/ it, i continued to drive the car with a leaky ws for about week, until i went through a car wash & noticed a strong stream of water running down the left inside of the ws inside the car. the following monday (today) i called the dealership. i'm taking the car in tonight. i'm suggesting, some sort of extra strength seal & possibly a sway bar to stabilize the vehicle more. if this doesn't work then i want to trade it in for a newer xb or possibly something else. my warranty is only for 100,000 miles & i'm half way there & i don't want to get to the point where i have to start paying to replace any of this when it is obviously a flaw with the car. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated there are numerous rust spots located on the lift gate and front passenger side door frame. the dealership and manufacturer have been alerted and denied the problem. they explained this is a paint defect. updated 6/30/2006 - the consumer believes that the rust may have developed as a result of weld splatter. the rust appeared at the junction between the door frame and opposing rubber door seal. *nm

The vehicles rear hatch handle has a design flaw which makes the part fail. the rear hatch handle is fastened to the trunk/hatch with plastic clips. when the release button for the hatch is pressed, it only unlocks the hatch door. it does not spring upward like other vehicles. in the manual it shows to hold the release button and lift with the hatch handle. because there are no springs to help lift it applies lots of pressure to the clips which weaken them. eventually, they just snap. they are also known for snapping when the hatch is locked, in cold weather, and there are even reports of the release button melting. another problem develops when the hatch handle is completely removed after failing. there are holes for the clips which are left open if this piece is not attached. these holes can allow exhaust and other emissions into the vehicle. lastly, there is a possibility of becoming trapped in the vehicle. if there were an accident that left the side doors inoperable and the person(s) in the vehicle were able to exit safely through the hatch, they are unable to do so. this vehicle is not equipped with any type of manual release (which is not required by law). however, rescuers cannot open the hatch from the outside either. this is because when this defective part breaks off, it leaves the dangling release button. consumers are capping the wires so it doesn't rip off while driving. there is now no way to exit the vehicle. *tr

2006 toyota scion xb rear hatch release. it broke without any faulty use. the toyota replacement is not substantial enough to repair the problem. the broken part interferes with the plate lights, the electric hatch release and allows exhaust fumes to enter vehicle through normally covered holes. i just want to list my complaint along with the other several thousand having the same problem. thank you. *tr

The rear hatch handle on my 06 scion xb has broken off on the right side and now just hangs there. i can hardly ever get into my trunk because of this. i am worried that it will come off completely as i am driving down the road and become a dangerous hazard for another driver. also the rear latch button rubber cover becomes so hot that it begins to melt. when you push the button it will leave black reidue on your hands. this prevents the button from working and unlatching the back hatch. not sure if it is melting due to electrical problems or the sun. worried could get to hot and catch fire sometime.

Problem #1: front windshield cracked. i replaced the windshield and it cracked again on the replacement. a small pebble hit the windshield while driving on the freeway that caused it to crack. problem #2: rear hatch handle broke when it was used. i opened the rear hatch handle and the plastic piece broke off in the process almost injuring my hand. i contacted scion about the situation they that they were aware of. they required me to receive an assessment from the dealer. i drove to my nearest dealer and they did not require an assessment because they said the problem was already known. i contacted scion again and they get back to me for a solution. the solution was for me to replace the rear handle with a high price amount. the rear handle expensive should have been taken care of on scion's end, especially when a near injury could have take place. i received case number for my records.

I have a 2006 scion xb. the back latch (made of fiberglass) has completely broken off on one side. it is impossible to use and is impossible to get into the car using the rear entrance. it is expensive to repair.this is a safety hazard in that if some one was in the car in an accident or if this was the only access to get into the car to help victims access is not available. i have seen 4 cars of this model just in my area that have the same problem. if you have to wait until there is an actual accident this is a inferior system!

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 toyota scion xb. while driving approximately 20 to 50 mph, the headlights dimmed and visibility was reduced. the lights would illuminate again moments later. while driving 30 mph uphill, the vehicle accelerated to 60 mph. the brakes were applied, but would not function unless they were engaged at a rapid pace. occasionally the engine shuts off, the front end shakes while driving 20-50 mph, and the cruise control switch failed to engage. the vehicle continued to burn an excessive amount of fuel after the oil was changed and the check engine light illuminated. the radio failed and the dealer stated that they would replace it when the parts arrive. the mechanic stated that the back of the bumper was split, which caused it to fall off of the vehicle. the dealer also offered her $14,000 for the vehicle only if she paid them $5,000. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure; however, they stated that the failures were electrical. the failure mileage was 400 and current mileage was 12,000. updated 02-14-08. *kb

I purchased my scion xb 2006 in august of 2006. last week, wed. july 9, 2008, an l shaped crack appeared on my front windshield. it appeared overnight out of nowhere. i discovered it in the morning. there are no signs of trauma to the windshield. the crack starts at the very top edge of the windshield and goes in an l shape. the next morning (thur, july 10) a second l-shaped crack appeared in my windshield in the same fashion. this one is on the lower left side and also starts at the very edge of the windshield. again, there was no trauma to the windshield and the crack appeared out of nowhere. the two cracks are now heading toward each other, and i am worried this defective windshield will crack. after researching this issue online and talking to mechanics, i have found out that this is a common defect in the scion xb 2006 model. many owners have reported l-shaped cracks appearing out of nowhere and filed complaints. the mechanic i spoke with said that he has replaced many cracked windshields on scion xb's. he attributes what he termed this design defect to the fact that the car sits so low and the steep grade of the windshield. i know you have received numerous other complaints about this problem, and i urge you to take action.*tr
