Front windshield developed an 'l' shaped crack from the top center of the windshield behind the rearview mirror extending to the passenger side. at first i thought something hit it on my way home and for some reason i didnt notice... when i inspected it, there was no sign of anything hitting it, no ding no anything, it seemed to just appear overnight. i took it to the dealer only to be told that i had gone over the 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty by a couple hundred miles. i love my car, but the more i read the more discouraged i get. it seems if i pay to replace the windshield, it will only break again. if i dont have it replaced, i could be decapitated or crushed in an accident. for only having 36700 miles that shouldnt have happened unprovoked

Came out to the car this morning to find a l shaped crack starting from the top middle of the windshield down about 8 inches, and taking a 90 degree turn twords the driver side for another 12 inches. upon inspection the crack has no impact point and looks to have started from behind the weather stripping. contacted my local dealer and they refuse to believe there is a common problem. a simple google search of 'scion xb windshield' turns up thousands of results and a class action lawsuit. repair estimate; 680$.

The windshield on my 2006 scion xb cracked (full length of the windshield) while the vehicle was stationary. the vehicle was parked in my driveway. there was no evidence of impact. curious why it would crack while the vehicle was parked i searched the internet and discovered that numerous others scion xb owners were reporting an identical situation. *tr

Toyota scion xb, 2006: windshield has been cracking ongoing beginning 2 weeks after i purchased this car. toyota/scion refuses to acknowledge this ongoing problem, and offers no replacement. i replaced 2 windshields within a year and lived with another crack for 3 years until now, as i have accumulated 3 cracks. toyota offers me the chance to pay twice as much for their glass as the cost for aftermarket replacement. *tr

This is my second complaint around this issue. my 2006 scion xb has a cracked windshield. this is the second time! my research indicates this is an unusually common problem in this model and i note that this will be the 89th complaint of this type on this site. i have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles in my life and my windshield has been hit by rocks on many occasions. not once have those strikes resulted in a fatally cracked windshield until my scion. a small nick will almost invariably end up in major crack. i was told by the dealership that this is because of how the windshield is sloped. i believe it is a cheap piece of glass or a design flaw of some kind. at $500 a windshield it is becoming an expensive proposition to own this vehicle. *tr

Windshield on my 2006 scion xb cracked overnight while sitting in my driveway. i discovered a crack starting from the edge of the windshield, approx eye-level on the drivers side. the crack extends about 10 inches downward at a 45 degree angle. there were no signs of a rock chip or other exterior damage to the windshield. this crack was not present the evening before then the car was parked. *tr

Two months ago, as i was driving on the freeway during rush hour, i heard a noise. at first, i did not notice anything different until i then glanced at the passenger side of my windshield. there was a crack starting from the top of the windshield to about a 1/3 down. it has slowly been getting longer and is now halfway to the driver's side. when i got out of the car to examine the crack, there is no sign of a rock or any other item hitting the windshield. my insurance will only cover it after i pay my deductible (which is more than a new windshield would cost me). *tr

I purchased a new 2006 scion xb in july 2006. in february 2007, i turned on the defrost for the first time and the windshield cracked exactly in the middle about 5 straight up curved toward the driver for about 9 and then curved up again about 1 1/2. there were no other cracks in the windshield. i took it to the dealer who ran a pen digging into the crack saying there must have been some prior damage. there wasn't any prior damage to the windshield. *tr

My 2006 scion xb (as well as every other one out there) has a design flaw in the windshield. i am on my second windshield. cracks happen for no reason, something as simple as turning on your defrost. scion replaced my first windshield because my car was under warranty. now they are hesitant to do it again. i let them know there are thousands of people on the web with the same problem i have. apparently it's the 04-06 scion xb. i cannot afford to go out and replace a windshield everytime this happens, on top of my car payment, and insurance, not to mention my other bills. i think scion owes it to the customers to do something about it. they claim to not know anything about this design flaw, but after some internet searching, there has been a class action lawsuit filed against them for the windshield problem. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your time. *tr

Windshield stress crack on scion xb. 2006 my. the crack happened spontaneously from the rearview mirror and curving right. from investigating numerous posts, discussions, etc. on the internet, this appears to be a significant defect. just google scion xb windshield cracking and you'll find a plethora of incidents. some customers report replacing windshields 8 times in one year! *tr

My vehicle has not been driven but approximately 0.5 miles in 4 days. on the 5th day i got in my vehicle to drive and there was an l shaped crack across my windshield. this crack was not there the last time i drove my vehicle. the origin of the crack begins under the seam where the windshield meets the top of the car a few inches towards the driver's side of the vehicle. the crack then goes straight down for approximately 6 inches and then angles sharply towards the passenger side of the vehicle and continues for approximately 12 inches. there is no chip, crack, or nick that appears to be the cause of this large l shaped crack. the reason for the crack is completely unknown. *tr

Parked my car (2006 scion xb) outside one evening. woke the next morning and there was a large l-shaped crack near the rearview mirror. no rock or impact damage occurred, just a crack appeared. about 4 days later, not only had that crack grown, but i now had a new crack jutting in from the passenger side. both cracks exceed well over 18 inches. there is nothing of my doing or of an accident involved in these cracks. i have visited a number of online forums, and this appears commonplace with these xbs and their owners. it seems there is too much stress in the design on the glass, and it cracks at will. anyways, it appears to be a defect, and i do not want to pay $500 for a new windshield that is only to crack again at the slightest temperature change. please help us. scion needs to fix this issue. this isn't a spark plug...these windshields are $500 and we shouldn't have to replace them. *tr

A spontaneous crack appeared in my 2006 scion xb windshield while sitting overnight. the crack starts at the top center edge of the windshield, travels down behind the rear view mirror, and angles towards the driver's side in an l shape. there is no chip or other visible damage associated with the crack. there was no rock impact in days/weeks/months preceding the crack. it's perhaps 8-12 long. the lack of any obvious or accidental cause for this crack is what concerns me and seems to imply a defect. *tr

Found a l-shaped crack in my windshield. it starts from the top of the windshield on the driver's side and ends right underneath the rear view mirror. my windshield did not have a crack when i left my car the night before. it is a very fine crack and doesn't look as if something hit the glass. took my car into the dealership . the service manager proceeded to run a ballpoint pin through the crack and told me that it would not be covered because there was pitting. *tr

I own a 2006 scion xb. the windshield cracked (at the edge) for no apparent reason in march 2008, and it was indicated by the dealer that it was due to installation. the windshield was replaced at no charge. it has cracked once again, december 2008, once again along the edge of the windshield. i have not had an opportunity to have it looked at to see if the dealer will replace it once again for no charge. this is also an inconvenience as the dealership is one hour from my home. *tr

I was referred to this site by another website, myscioinsucks.com, and i am so glad i was! i have been waiting for my dealership to do something about this and have not been in real pursuit of any justice until recently. i have a cracked windshield on my scion 2006 xb. i really wanted justice when i almost got into another scion exactly like mine the other day with the same crack in it's windshield. i have now been waiting for almost a year on something to be said by them about a recall when i go to get my oil changed. not one breath of anything yet. i am a very passive person, sometimes too passive but not anymore with this issue. i got the crack in my windshield in the end of november of 2007. i am financially strapped, or check to check as most say and could not afford to get it fixed and didn't see a need to if it wasn't my fault. as i said, why spend my money when toyota wont admit to anything. i woke up to find this crack in my windshield on a very mild temp. day of about 70 i believe. neither hot nor cold. i remember vividly. i got in my car to go to work and noticed this l-shaped crack starting from the passenger side curving down and going toward the driver's side. i drove about 2 weeks later after having the car looked at in toyota dealership, on a 5 hours trip and another crack started appearing from the bottom midline.... and progressed upward and left toward the driver side, and by the end of the trip it was over a foot in length. appearing to be stress from an 80 mph speed majority of the trip. i have asked toyota about it many times and never once was it their fault. i just recently go online after seeing my 5th 2006 xb cracked windshield identical to mine. i am wanting it fixed and nothing more and cannot get any answers. *tr

Went to my garage in the morning and discovered an lshaped crack in the center of the windshield had formed overnight. i was completely shocked as nothing had previous hit the windshield. after searching the web, it's clear the must be a defect in the design as it can not be a coincidence that many other 2006 xb owners have similar cracks in their windshields. the toyota/scion service manager said he would call me when the dsm inspection is possible. i am going to go the other dealerships to see if i can schedule the inspection sooner. *tr

I walked into my garage on 9/24/08 and found a l-shaped crack in my windshield. it starts from the top of the windshield on the driver's side and ends right underneath the rear view mirror. my windshield did not have a crack when i left my car the night before. it is a very fine crack and doesn't look as if something hit it (no splinters in the glass). i contacted scion corporate this on 9/24/08 and they told me to make an appointment with a scion dealership. they said that it would be up to the dealership whether the replacement would be covered by the warranty and if the dealership deems that it shouldn't be, then i should get an estimate and contact them again with the information. they opened up a case number for me. i contacted miller toyota in culver city and took my car into the dealership 9/25/08 @ 1:00 pm. the service manager proceeded to run a ballpoint pin through the crack and told me that it would not be covered because there was pitting. i then requested an estimate, which came to $1.019.27. then i contacted scion corporate again and was told that they would arrange a person from corporate to inspect the windshield. scion corporate told me that the corporate rep would be there at noon on 9/29/08. i went to the dealership on 9/29/08 at noon and the representative was not there. and she didn't show for another 50 minutes. i told the service manager that i was leaving around 12:50 pm and he kept saying: she will be here any minute. then as he gets to my car, i see a short asian woman with her hair pulled into a bun. he gives her a pen from his pocket and she runs a ballpoint pen through the crack (she spent 5-10 seconds with my car). the same service manager that did the ballpoint pen test was the one who wrote up the report to say the same thing. they are unconscionable. the funny thing is when i was researching my car purchase, i saw on edmunds that the 2006 scion xb had problems with spontaneous cracks forming in the windshield. *tr

The windshield on my 2006 scion xb has been replaced twice and currently has a crack in it. the first crack appeared 6 weeks after purchasing the car and the dealer replaced it free. the second time it cracked i wasn't aware that there were problems with other scion windshields and replaced it myself 2 weeks later for $226.63. now i have another crack in the windshield but haven't fixed it because i know it will crack again. *tr

I walked into my garage this morning and found a l-shaped crack in my windshield. it starts from the top of the windshield on the driver's side and ends right underneath the rear view mirror. my windshield did not have a crack when i left my car yesterday evening. it is a very fine crack and doesn't look as if something hit it (no splinters in the glass). i contacted scion corporate this morning and they told me to make an appointment with a scion dealership (i am making an appointment for tomorrow morning). they said that it would be up to the dealership whether the replacement would be covered by the warranty and if the dealership deems that it shouldn't be, then i should get an estimate and contact them again with the information. they opened up a case number for me. the funny thing is when i was researching my car purchase, i saw on edmunds.com that the 2006 scion xb had problems with spontaneous cracks forming in the windshield. hopefully, toyota/scion resolves this issue in a reasonable manner. i will keep you posted on how this pans out. *tr

Around march 2008, i pebble hit my scion xb windshield and caused a small crack. about a week later the windshield cracked in different places and i had to get it replaced. recently, on august 4th, 2008, another pebble hit my windshield and another crack. and today august 27th, 2008, my friend who has an xb also got a crack on her windshield from a small pebble. i looked online for some sort of explanation and it seems that tons of scion xb owners are complaining of such a defect on their windshields. so i am also here to complain about this problem since im going through my 2nd windshield. *tr

I own a 2006 scion xb and parked the car in a parking lot. upon my return i found a crack in my windshield that started on the lower right side, went in about 2 inches, up about 6 inches, and then left about 12 inches. it does not appear that there was any impact or rock chip to initiate the crack. *tr

Noticed a crack in the windshield after vehicle parked overnight. crack is l shaped beginning at driver's side windshield edge approx. 12 from bottom, extending approx. 3 horizontally, then turning 90 degrees toward bottom of windshield and extending approx. 9. crack is not from debris and no pits can be felt anywhere along the crack. vehicle is in warranty but dealer states that since no recall has been issued the warranty does not cover the windshield. as of 6/16/08 the windshield has not been replaced. *tr

While driving, a crack began in the windshield coming up from the about from the bottom of the windshield (about 8 from the middle, closer to the driver). after climbing a about 9 it made a 90 degree turn and continued on (making about an 18 crack w/in an hour). there was no chip near that area. there had been a chip on the far passenger side that had been repaired. since then the windshield has gotten 4 other rock chips (including on that caused a crack extending exactly opposite of the 1st crack -- coming from the top-passenger side of center, toward the driver). this car has only been on the interstate for about 2000 miles (it has a total of 20000 miles). it has not driven on any abnormal or industrial roads (all chips/cracks occurred while the vehicle was traveling on an urban interstate at separate times). i would also like an assessment of how many chips/cracks can occur before a catastrophic failure of the windshield. as i will not replace my windshield with every oil change (only when the state forces me to due to the frequent nature of these incidents). *tr

I have a 2006 scion xb with only 9,000 miles on it, and i am about to replace the windshield for the third time with the same exact l-shape crack that begins at the top center goes down about 6 inches and then to the left 6 inches. no rock damage or other damage can be attributed to this. there is some kind of defect to cause a windshield to constantly crack in the same place every time with the same look. *tr

My 2006 scion xb has developed a crack in the windshield, l shaped from the top of the windshield, behind the rearview mirror, going perpendicular for about 6-8 then making a 90 degree turn toward the passenger side, extending for about 12. it has stopped progressing. it seemed to happen for no reason. this seems to be a common complaint amongst xb owners. *tr

17 inch crack just behind the rear view mirror. long crack starting at the rubber of the windshield going 7 inches down, crack turns in a 90 degree angle 10 inches towards the passenger. no impact, crack was not there when i parked my car. crack present when i got in my car the next morning. will be getting the windshield repaired tomorrow. will not have it replaced at this time since there has been a lot of issue of the windshield cracking again from other scion xb owners. i don't have the resources to keep replacing windshield as many other have had done. *tr

Crackwindshield: i have(my insurance company) has replaced 3 windshields in my 2006 scion xb and i currently have a (l) shape crack in my windshield, which starts at he top of my rear-view mirror. if i decide to replace this windshield this will be number 4. i have complained to the toyota dealership when-ever i bring my car in for maintenance and i have been advised that the windshield is thicker than most due to the shape of the glass! hah! this is seriously a problem. if i contact my insurance company they replace the glass, if i want to consider a new insurance company they consider this a claim against my policy and this makes my insurance coverage higher with other insurance companies, which of course limits my options! this windshield situation is costly and dangerous! *tr

On tuesday january 19, 2010 on my way home from work i noticed a small crack in the center of my windshield right behind the rearview mirror of my 2006 scion xb. i was going to take it to a shop to be repaired on wednesday, on wednesday morning i saw the crack had doubled in size and was in the shape of an l going towards the drivers side and was beyond ability to repair. i thought it could have been a rock that caused the damage, but i could not recall a rock causing such damage in so little time. so i did some research online to see that there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints of the l shape crack in the 2004 - 2006 scion xb windshield. i did more research and i was told to file a complaint with nhtsa in hope it could be resolved since this is a safety hazard. *tr

I own a scion xb 2006 and have the same problem many other scion xb owners are having. my front windshield keeps cracking in the typical l shaped pattern. the first time was last year, it cracked for no reason during the late spring. a rock never hit it, nor did anything else that led to the crack. yesterday, i noticed the same l shape crack starting, this morning, it spread across my windshield to the passenger side. the crack is just under 3 feet long. this is exactly the same as the first crack, starts on the drivers side about three inches from the end of the window frame and moves to the passenger side. i've had it replaced by my insurance company using their suggested auto glass repair people. i will have it replaced again, tomorrow. so far, this seems to occur every 8,000 miles. i called scion today to tell them about my situation after finding numerous web-sites dedicated specifically to this problem. it seems to be a structural problem with the car and spans many years models as the newer 2008's have the same issues as my 2006 and the older 2005 models. *tr

I just went into the garage to move my scion and noticed a large crack in the shape of a j at the top middle of my windshield. when searching for auto glass on the net, i came across too many posts of xb owners with the same problem and see that it looks like a silent recall. *tr

I have a 2006 scion xb that was purchased in may 2006. last year, in 2007, a crack appeared that started on the edge of the windshield on the driver's side. they crack then grew from a line into an l shape. a month or so after that another l shaped crack appeared coming from the top of the windshield behind the rearview mirror. i replaced the windshield on august 29, 2008. last night the windshield was fine, this morning (september 12, 2008 - two weeks later!!) there is another l shaped crack behind the rearview mirror that appeared overnight while the car was sitting in my driveway.

*tr

I purchased my scion xb 2006 in august of 2006. last week, wed. july 9, 2008, an l shaped crack appeared on my front windshield. it appeared overnight out of nowhere. i discovered it in the morning. there are no signs of trauma to the windshield. the crack starts at the very top edge of the windshield and goes in an l shape. the next morning (thur, july 10) a second l-shaped crack appeared in my windshield in the same fashion. this one is on the lower left side and also starts at the very edge of the windshield. again, there was no trauma to the windshield and the crack appeared out of nowhere. the two cracks are now heading toward each other, and i am worried this defective windshield will crack. after researching this issue online and talking to mechanics, i have found out that this is a common defect in the scion xb 2006 model. many owners have reported l-shaped cracks appearing out of nowhere and filed complaints. the mechanic i spoke with said that he has replaced many cracked windshields on scion xb's. he attributes what he termed this design defect to the fact that the car sits so low and the steep grade of the windshield. i know you have received numerous other complaints about this problem, and i urge you to take action.*tr

I bought my scion brand new in nov. 2005. it was my first brand new car, and i love my xb. i have been having unacceptable problems with windshield cracks. i am currently on my 5th windshield, and today i came out and saw a new crack. approx. 12 on the lower passenger side. the car has been parked in the driveway facing the garage door since about 530pm yesterday. some one of the previous crack was due to a small pebble like object that lightly hit the windshield. it was instantaneously a 10 crack. my first two windshields were covered by my insurance, that last one i paid for out of pocket. with the new crack i will also have to pay for replacement unless toyota owns up to the defect. the new crack shows no signs of impact. it grows out from under the molding and goes up, then slightly to the right, then up again. i have contacted toyota twice hoping to get this solved. i'll keep my fingers crossed. *tr

On the morning of march 13, 2008 i awoke to find a large l shaped crack(approx. 1 ft long/driver's side) in the windshield of my 2006 scion xb. i immediately called my insurance company and they made an appointment for me to have the windshield replaced the following day(costing me a $50.00 deductible). i could offer no reason as to how the crack happened...it seemed to just appear(as most of the other complaints i've read on here suggest). in addition, i have owned my xb for close to a year and a half and in that time i have had the windshield repaired 2 other times due to chips/small cracks. judging by the data i have found on this website and elsewhere, i would definitely conclude that there is a major defect in the 2006 scion xb. and this is definitely a safety hazard, being that the windshield is a major component of a vehicle's safety. *tr

My windshield developed a crack sitting in my driveway. crack is about a foot long starting from the top middle of my windshield into a l shaped towards/behind my rear view mirror. two days prior to the incident there was snow which lead to cold weather. i am planning to take my car to a local scion dealer for repair. i am hesitant to replace my windshield if another crack is going to develop. no pebbles/rocks hit my windshield while driving on highways to and from work. hopefully scion will replace the window at no cost. there is definitely a design flaw with the 2006 scion xb. others who complained had cracks develop without any material hitting the windshield. *tr

Driving my scion xb down the freeway, a crack developed from the edge of the driver's side windshield and grew by 18 inches within seconds. after stopping to inspect the windshield, i found there was no impact point and this was a stress fracture. after reading internet forums and this websites complaints, i can see this is a common occurrence. *tr

I've had to replace my windshield twice in the past six months. the first time was because of a pebble and i went to the replacement place recommended by my insurance carrier. the second time the windshield just cracked. i was driving down the road and heard this click. thought there was a crack, but saw nothing. next morning i got into my car and there was a crack about 3 long on the bottom, left, driver's side of the windshield. no little impact crater indicating a debris hit, just a crack. i went to one of those repair places and they did their thing, but over the course of 2 weeks the crack grew until it was about 18 long. finally just gave up and replaced it. when i called the windshield repair place they said they get a lot of xb calls. the windshield design is faulty causing it to keep cracking. i love my xb and don't want to get rid of it, but also don't want to keep buying windshields!!! *tr

The windshield has been replaced twice due to l shaped cracks that developed from the side pillars. i am sure it is not because of being hit by a rock. the first time i thought i could hear the cracking sound while sitting in the car(11-05-07). the 2nd time, the car was in the garage & not driven that day. the day before, it had only been washed & put back in the garage. *tr

I purchased a 2006 scion xb in march of 2006. i did not drive it much as a student but now that i've graduated i see major problems in the vehicle design. i had one pebble hit the top part of my windshield in dec 2007 and it caused a vertical vein down the driver side of my window. i have since replaced the window and now, two months after, my windshield has again veined as a result of a pebble hitting the edge of the windshield. all of this occurred on a daily commute on the highway. since i actually had two different brands of windshield i can only conclude that this is not a windshield problem, but rather a design defect. the shape of the vehicle leaves the windshields susceptible to cracks more than other vehicles. for a vehicle that is supposed to be economical i feel that paying over 300 dollars every couple months for a new windshield is completely unacceptable and toyota should be held responsible. *tr

I bought my 2006 scion xb new. sitting in my driveway one morning i got in and closed the door. my windshield cracked. i had not started the car yet, just closed the door, and not hard. my car was parked on a slope, perhaps 6 degrees. the crack was on the lower driver's side corner about 5 inches from the bottom and only a few inches long. over the next few weeks it grew and turned down connecting with the bottom edge. now the same windshield has sprouted another crack. i just returned from the dealership, kearny mesa toyota (92111) where they told me there was nothing they could do, that the glass was impacted by rocks. the manager came out with his ballpoint pen and traced the crack. when he found no impact crater he made a chip by running his pen crosswise to the crack, which made a small star chip that looks like a impact mark. he told me this is not under warranty and that it would cost me 700 to 900 to fix my car. i am still driving with a broken windshield. *tr

I bought a used '06 scion xb in aug. '07 & w/in a week my windshield(ws) was leaking bigtime. there were no cracks & the carfax report came back clean w/ no prior accidents. i called the dealer & since it was under warranty they had a local ws co. replace the ws. that weekend i washed my car & noticed water running down the inside of the ws again by the rearview mirror. still no obvious reason of why it should be leaking. i was extremely concerned about electrical issues w/ the water & the fact that i live in portland which meant lots of rain. i called the dealer again & this time i asked for another co. to replace the glass, thinking the other co. had just done a bad job. after the 2nd time of fixing it i thought everything was fine until i noticed loud popping & cracking noises while driving. a couple of the pops were so loud it scared me because it sounded like the whole ws cracked, but there were no visible cracks. just in case i was hearing things, i had my husband ride along & he heard the same noises. a week or two later, i noticed that when the ws was fogging there were stream lines from water on the left inside and i knew those shouldn't be there because the last co. had put in a brand new ws. later, i finally noticed water dripping in the same spot & i knew it was leaking again. frustrated & not wanting to deal w/ it, i continued to drive the car with a leaky ws for about week, until i went through a car wash & noticed a strong stream of water running down the left inside of the ws inside the car. the following monday (today) i called the dealership. i'm taking the car in tonight. i'm suggesting, some sort of extra strength seal & possibly a sway bar to stabilize the vehicle more. if this doesn't work then i want to trade it in for a newer xb or possibly something else. my warranty is only for 100,000 miles & i'm half way there & i don't want to get to the point where i have to start paying to replace any of this when it is obviously a flaw with the car. *tr

I bought my 2006 scion xb brand new in december of 2006. i've only owned my car for 1 year, but i've had 4 windshield cracks/chips. the first occurred the 2nd week of having my car. a rock hit the windshield in the middle and caused a chip, i immediately had novus stop it before it turned into a bigger problem. i had no problems through the summer and lived with a chip windshield. then a couple of months ago another rock hit the edge of my windshield (where the frame of the car is behind the glass) and the crack immediately spread to being about 12 inches long. i placed a claim with my insurance company and had the windshield replaced with toyota manufactured glass about a week later. a couple of weeks ago, my windshield cracked again, with no cause or rock damage noticed. the crack grew quickly and is about 15 inches long. i called the insurance company and the people who replaced my windshield. i also did a bit of research and found out that the windshield is apparently cursed because owners everywhere are having the same problem. and now i have a second 15 inch crack on the same windshield. i'm waiting for the original toyota manufactured glass to come in (so that toyota is still responsible when i have to replace it a third time) and then i'll have it replaced. 4 cracks in less than a year... seems like there could be a serious problem with this windshield. *tr

I just replaced my windshield on my 2006 scion xb on 11/30/07 after 2 cracks developed after only tiny pebbles from the road hit in 2 different spots on 2 different occasions and created a cracks that spread like wildfire. this obviously made it impossible for repair because even if the glass company came within a couple hours, the crack had already spread from maybe 3-4 inches to over 12 inches! on both occasions the impact points were no more than 1 inch from the molding edge in the black area of the glass. any other time that i have had anything hit in the middle/in my line of view, it just bounces off like a piece of rubber with no damage. all in all, it has only been about 2 1/2 weeks since i paid about $250 out of my own pocket to have the thing replaced, and i already have another crack!!! same as the last couple of times... a very small pebble/rock hit about an inch from the molding in the black area of the glass on my way in to work this morning (12/18/07). and within my hour commute to work, it had already spread to about 3-4 inches. that was at about 8:00 this morning. it is now 10:20am, and when i went outside to look at it again at 9:30am, it had already spread to about 12 inches!!! i guess they won't be able to repair it!!! if it's longer than a dollar bill, they can't fix it according to my glass company that i usually call. this is obviously a design flaw and i would like to see toyota correct this problem. i have seen many many many complaints regarding this particular issue throughout the internet and a very considerable amount of complaints with the nhtsa/odi. this is a violation of the lemon law and have no problem giving it back to them for a full refund of all payments i have made to date since my purchase back in aug 2006 or a new vehicle under my current financing option. *tr

I own a 2006 scion xb. there seems to be a manufacturer's flaw on the windshield design. less than 8 months there was a crack on the front windshield for no apparent reason. i then had to replaced it with a brand new front windshield. about a week later a new crack appeared, there was no rocks that had hit the front windshield. it just slowly started to crack from the driver's edge frame and slowing increased in length. to replace the windshield twice in 8 months was not regular. i searched online forums around, and it seemed like i was not the only one complaining about the toyota scion windshield defects. i think scion should be held responsible for all the cracked windshields that occrured with their defective design. there should be a recall to fix this problem. *ak

Windshield cracks: my windshield cracked, with no one in the car, and no chip. it had less than 2000 miles when it happened. i had parked the car most of the way under a carport, where the front 2/3 was shaded as the sun rose that morning but the back 1/3 had sun shining on it. i had the front windows down a couple of inches each. the crack came from the passenger side at the seal about half way up the window, and traveled in toward the driver's side horizontally then took a turn 90 degrees upward for a couple of inches and then 90 degrees toward the driver's side again. total length was approx 14 inches. i immediately called the dealer and asked if anyone else had this same issue. mind you i bought the car from kerry scion in florence, ky. where they claim the car sells itself and they can't keep them in stock- no one seemed to have reported a similar incident. the service tech laughed at me over the phone! i took a ballpoint pen like he told me and followed the crack and no chip! this was in august 2006. over the course of one year the crack grew to almost the entire width of the windshield. then just last week, a new crack appeared originating at the top edge of the windshield, on the drivers side of the review mirror, traveling downward then making a 90 degree turn toward the passenger side. the same day the second crack appeared, which occurred as the car was parked(same as the first crack) in the lot at work, the original crack grew approx 6 inches toward the drivers side. this is why i replaced the windshield today: i was told while registering my vehicle this past week that the state i now live in, ks, will ticket you for a crack in the windshield if in front of the drivers line of sight. so if it is safety concern for the state of kansas, then it's a safety issue that toyota need to address. *tr

 1. events leading up to the failure: vehicle sit in the sunlight. 2. failure and its consequences: the windshield cracks because the frame flexes without any impact to the windshield. 3. what was done to correct the failure: i had 8 windshield replacements in 6 months. toyota/scion eventually repurchased the vehicle since it was a lemon. *tr

Purchased car in september 2006 in north hollywood. sitting at gas station early morning near mt shasta (north california, temperature just above freezing) with heater running. while pumping gas heard a cracking noise, came around to front of car and found crack running horizontally from lower driver side of windshield. within two hours crack had grown almost seven inches, curving up first then running horizontally towards the passenger side. the next morning (again very cold temperatures) the crack had grown almost a full foot further. by the time i got the car to the dealership the service manager ran a pen along the crack and declared that a grain of sand had struck the windshield and that the dealership refused to cover the repair. i contacted toyota, they said that they would defer to the dealerships experts, even though i pointed out the many, many postings on this fault on this website. there is definitely a recallable fault if a grain of sand traveling at freeway velocities can cause a failure of the windshield; were that explanation true no toyota could safely be on the road. the fact that i was at a dead stop when the impact happened makes it even more ridiculous. *jb

Windshield cracked for no reason. i pulled up in the garage notice this 15 inches crack coming from lower passenger side window. no impact is visible to cause the crack. i called the dealership in lancaster they told me it was a rock that causes it, i advised to look in to a possible safety problem on the glass or design they said never heard of it before so i said to do a search in the internet. i don't mind replacing it but not every few weeks..like others did..someone need to look in to this possible safety problem with out being thrown out.. *nm

I purchased a brand new 2006 scion xb in december of 2006. i got a crack in my windshield approximately two weeks ago. there are no chips from being hit by a rock. there are message boards posting similar situations from other scion owners and neither scion nor toyota want to do anything to fix the problem. this is a manufacturing issue and not a cause of a rock chip. *jb

I have a new 2006 scion xb purchased in september 2006. first cracked windshield occurred on 11/09/06; at 7am , temperature 65-68 degrees, i turned on the heat-low- to get fog off the windshield, took out the thrash and came back to the car and found a nine inch crack from left side under rubber bending toward the right into my line of sight. no objects have hit my windshield and dealer could find no impact point. toyota replaced windshield under warranty. today, 12/20/06, i turned on the heat-specifically kept it low-to clear fog again (70 degrees outside). drove 0.2 mile and noticed a new crack coming from under the rubber at the top center near the rear view mirror. nothing has hit this second windshield. found many internet blogs about scion xb windshields cracking while they just sit in peoples' garage. this appears to be a design flaw. i request a recall on this flimsy windshield. please tell me what can be done about this. i am sure another windshield will not fix the real problem--this is a safety hazard and getting the repair causes me to lose work time. *nm

2006 scion xb windshield stress cracking. there was no impact. i have had two replaced in 4 months. the dealer has taken care of this so far, but i wanted to advise in that it appears to be a common issue. in some parts of the country, the dealers are not taking care of this problem. its either bad glass, or the cradle the glass sits in, is not matched to the glass profile. both cracks appeared while sitting. there was no impact. *nm

I own a 2006 scion xb and i believe there is something wrong with the structure of the vehicle. i had to replace the windshield of the car after a 6 inch crack appeared in it instantly and then developed into a 12 inch crack by the next morning. i took it to the dealership because there was no sign of trauma that would cause a crack and the guy took a pen and ran it up the crack and said there was a chip that caused this crack. the chip in no way should have caused this damage seeing as the car was in the dealership on friday and they did not detect any flaws in the glass and for this chip to have happened within the next two days and lead to a crack is unheard of as i have experienced chips in other windshields and they lead to no such damage in such a short time. *nm

Death rattle noise at upper left, above dash near front windshield. this noise has been there on and off since the purchase of the car. this noise indicates that a crack will appear in windshield shortly. the crack is longer than a foot and will appear suddenly. victorville toyota dealer doesn't believe there is a problem. the crack appeared after i had the noise checked out by victorville toyota after they couldn't find the problem. i believe it is the windshield support brackets that need to be trimmed that will cause the crack. *nm

Due to the upright position of the windshield a small rock can cause stars which lead to multiple leader cracks. due to grill design and position of a/c condenser a small rock can puncture causing a leak and require replacement costs of up to $1100 on a 4 month old car. toyota needs to realize that their design has major flaws with positioning. unfortunately, rocks are everywhere and if you drive any at all on the freeway you are surely going to encounter some. *jb

Had vehicle for a year when my windshield cracked for the first time. a year later another crack appeared. i did research and it seems like this model in particular had windshield problems and continuously cracked easily. i believe this is a huge safety issue as it affects visibility tremendously and continues to be an ongoing occurrence. as most warranty have expired by now, a recall on these windshield should be in processed. *tr
