While traveling home at normal speed the vsc/trac lights came on and the vehicle began vibrating and making a grinding noise. after stopping on the side of the road, i called my husband and was told to turn the vehicle off and on to possibly reset the vsc/trac. it seemed to work briefly but it started to do it again. after making it home, my husband drove the vehicle initially without any issues. however, he attempted to take the vehicle to the store and the problem started again. he noted audible alerts and the vsc/trac lights illuminating, grinding from what seemed to be the passenger side front tire. he had to pull off to the side of the road; however, found it difficult to control the vehicle. the speed was estimated at 35-40 mph, dry conditions with no obvious road conditions or issues. smoke was observed coming from the passenger front of the vehicle. this problem had been noted several time randomly over the past two years, but has seemingly been resolved by turning the vehicle off and back on. this was the first time that the issue has persisted, and the increased difficulty in steering. *tr

Vehicle skid control simply engages at normal speeds and normal driving conditions. hard grinding, pulling to the right or left and almost no braking. yes, they recalled 2003 to 05 but not 2002? why? it's the exact same problem. someone will be injured at some point and in fact, there are some accounts of injury. in my family's case, this has happened while driving about 8 times since we purchased this from a private dealer and after we had a certified mechanic check it out. this is on toyota. please investigate this. this is total negligence and disregard for individual safety. *tr

I have been having the same problem with my 02' sequoia. at first the vsc trac light/ vsc off would come on & go off after turning engine off. then it started staying on along w/ abs light & brake. all the lights continue to stay on. my vehicle only has 126,800 miles which i consider less to be having an issue at this time. i'm a mother of three in which this is my primary vehicle that carries my precious cargo. i really do think that toyota should issue some kind of recall in regards to this matter, it clearly looks likes this is a problem w/ other sequoia owners & they need to stand behind there products. especially when it involves the safety of lives. it would be great if someone could help me w/ this matter. *tr

My 2002 sequoia was going 68mph when, for no reason, the vsc (veh.stability control) indicator lite began flashing.the truck pulled left, the brakes seemed to be applying unevenly, and there was a grinding noise.i nearly had an accident and pulled over. shut engine off for 5 minutes, restarted, and truck drove normal (vsc lite was out).did same thing the next day at 55mph. my research showed that 2003 sequoias did the same thing, and atoyota recall of 2003 models(50,000) were fixed by toyota. i spoke to[xxx] of toyota customer experience center, who refused to help me.why is my truck treated any different than the 2003 model doing the same thing !!?? is my safety not important too? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

When driving at highway speed, in dry conditions, the vehicle skid control (vsc) and traction control system (trac) warning lights suddenly began flashing and beeping. the steering wheel began difficult to control and a loud grinding noise came from the brake pedal as the abs system was activated. this made for a very dangerous situation as the vehicle was very difficult to control in heavy traffic! after about five seconds, the grinding/abs activation and warning beeps stopped, but the warning lights stayed illuminated. when taking the next highway offramp and applying the brakes, the warning lights and grinding started again and this time it almost caused an accident when the braking was overridden by the abs! only after turning the car off and restarting did the warning lights turn off. the 2003 sequoia was recalled for this same problem. the 2002 sequoia should also be recalled. does there have to be accidents and fatalities before this will happen?? toyota needs to take responsibility for this dangerous defect. *tr

A couple of years back while driving at highway speed the 2002 toyota sequoia i was dirving sudenly had the esc engage with out warning the brakes engaged and the suv made a grinding noise and the vsc trac light lit up... i took it it to my dealer and $4000 later it was repaired: the repairs included replacing the abs computer and new brakes and rotors....now its june 2012 and its doing it again but now it engages randomly reguardless of speed or terrain... i have done some research on my vehicle and have found out that toyota has issued a recall on the same problem but only on the year models 2003-2005...i called my dealer to report the the problem and they confirmed my year model is not included in the recall... this is unaceptable please get toyota to own up to its responsibility and repair the defect...i never should have paid for the repair the first time but there is no way in hell i am paying again for the same defect....

Was driving on the interstate in the left hand lane. tried to merge into the right hand lane and noticed a car in my blind spot so i went back into the left lane. however, my vsc/abs lights went on, the car beeped, made a heavy grinding noise, and then, with much force, veered hard to the right. i tried to steer it back to the left hand lane, the other drivers saw me wrestling with my steering wheel and the car started to fishtail so fortunately they stayed well behind me. the car became impossible to control and steer and braking did not help. despite my best efforts to control the car, apply the brakes, steer out of the skidding and fishtailing, my car then went over into the right lane, over to the shoulder, and then the wheel sunk into the grass next to the shoulder where the vehicle rolled over several times. my son and i were airlifted to the trauma unit. i suffered 2 broken vertebrae in the c area of my neck and a compressed disc in the t region of my spine, concussion, cuts, bruises, glass embedded near my eye, as well as a splenic aneurysm. my son had a concussion, wound on the head that required stitches, cuts, bruises and a sprained ankle. my son and i were both unconscious at the accident scene.my two daughters had minor cuts, sprains, and bruises. we were fortunate to have come out of this alive and not to have hit anyone else. i am still in a neck brace and undergoing medical treatment. toyota needs to recall this model as soon as possible. we could have all been killed. unfortunately, my car was totaled and there was no black box in this model. i will never buy a car from toyota again. however, for the safety of others, i do hope they recall this model as i would hate for others to suffer what we had to suffer, or worse.

The traction control, vsc light is illuminated intermittently over the past few years. i am scared that if i need to avoid a impeding accident that because the vsc system not working that i may not be able to successfully avoid a potentially fatal accident. i am also scared that the vehicle may rollover when doing a fast turn to avoid an accident. based on my research, i have found that this is a common problem among these vehicles and that there was a 2003 recall for this problem. there are a lot of problems with the 2002 vehicles and it needs to get fixed. must we first have an accident to win rights to be accommodated. does toyota not want to make good on it's product and satisfy all owners/customers. i worry every time i drive my vehicle and thank god each time i reach my destination without incident.

While driving during normal dry conditions, vsc alarm started to go off followed by loss of control of brakes. was able to pull over without incident and at about 10 mph the alarm shutoff and the amber trac off light and vsc trac light annunciated and all driving conditions were normal again. i'm guessing at this point the system was disabled in the trac off mode. i'm in the process of bringing the car to the dealer for a diagnostic however i've read numerous items online of people having this problem and toyota doesn't seem to help (recall). it is quite expensive also.

We just bought this 2002 toyota sequoia to use for towing as well as to carry our family around in. we had our choice between an expedition, a tahoe and this sequoia. knowing the reliability of a toyota we were confident this was a good choice for our family. we have had the car approximately 3 weeks and as my husband was towing a full loaded trailer down a major interstate the vsc light flashed on and off a few times. thinking it was probably nothing he came home, mentioned it to me and started looking up information. what we found was incredible! this seems to be a huge problem that toyota is unwilling to acknowledge or fix or even have a fix for. later that day my husband was pulling into the driveway, suddenly the vsc trac light came back on, the car made a loud beeping noise and abruptly lurched to the right! immediately after coming in, i started calling toyota dealerships. i was told this was a common problem however it could cost up to $4500 to fix! the service adviser then went on to tell me step by step what they would do to fix the problem. first, by changing the yaw rate sensor than the skid control computer and if that didn't work the steering sensor, than the brake booster and finally the master cylinder. however, i then learned that maybe after doing all these repairs that it might fix the problem! we then drove the car to our mechanic, which is quite a ways away, and as we were nearing our destination (i was driving this time) i was pressing the brake to slow down in traffic and all of a sudden the car lurched to the right, the lights started flicking on again and the car made a beeping noise! the mechanic said the car was pulling several different codes so he wasn't sure what was wrong with it and it would be trial and error to fix it. toyota--you know something is wrong. fix it before someone gets hurt!

Started the vehicle and the vsc and the trac off lights illuminated and would not turn off. took to authorized toyota service center. was indicated that this is a common issue with toyota sequoia and that there has beeen a service recall on 2003 models but not for 2002. appears to be a common problem across model years.

Driving at 60 mph the vsc lights came on and the vehicle went to the right by itself.i slow down, and then the skid traction lights came on and a loud noise was coming out of the front....i think that if i was driving faster i could of have an accident...the same thing happened yesterday...

To start, i want to stress that i do not understand why there is no recall for this problem. the vsc trac, abs, skid control and brake lights all came on and stayed on as of the above date. prior to that date, the vsc trac and skid lights would come on for no reason, but would go off upon turning off and restarting the car. when the lights came on and stayed on, i read the owner's manual and based on that information, was worried the the brakes would not work, so i called the dealer. when i spoke to someone in the dealer's repair shop about the problem before i brought the car in, he said that the warning lights meant that my abs system was gone and it would cost $2,000 to fix. he said that it was not covered by warranty or a recall. so, i took it to the nearest auto repair shop to my home, that i had used previously. they checked the warning lights with the computer diagnostic and could not find anything wrong. then, i took it to the dealer, and they checked the warning lights and said that the problem was low voltage with the battery. i had recently bought a new battery, so i took the car back to the first place, which checked the battery and said it was fine. so i received conflicting messages from the dealer. however, since other owners with my year/model toyota have had safety problems with the same issue and toyota has the same problem with the 2003 model and they have issued a recall, i believe it is a safety issue. i can't understand why no recall has been issued for the 2002 year. please look at all of the complaints about this exact issue from so many consumers (and i'm sure plenty of others who did not take the time to report it) and act before someone is seriously injured or killed!!!!!!

I have a sequoia 2002. no previous history of big mechanical or electrical problems. recently i experience an incident were i lost control of the vehicle while driving in the highway. the mechanic told me i have a problem with the yaw rate sensor and that it was very costly to repair. i have found out that this is a common problem that many sequoia owners have experience. i understand my vehicle is way past warranty period but let me tell you, in security issues warranties does not expires and toyota should provide for repairs or recall or whatever resources they have to correct this problem.

In stop and go traffic at launch vehicle abs engaged without warning repeatedly with loud grinding noises and the abs light, traction light and vehicle stability control light all came up. stopped vehicle, turned off engine, waited a few minutes and all lights were gone upon restart. however this problem worsened considerably and more often through the october and november 2011 months, to the point of occurring every time the vehicle is driven as the date of this writing, december 3rd 2011. new worsened symptoms now include flashing vsc (vehicle stability control) at launch from a stop, which cuts engine power and compromises accurate steering. sometimes the abs, trac and vsc lights come up immediately, sometimes only after repeated intrusive activations of abs/trac/vsc. all these warning lights also stayed on once for two entire days after leaving the vehicle rest overnight. all these dangerous random interventions of the abs/trac/vsc electronics started after the front rotors and pads were changed by a professional mechanic (a1-unity body, 1420 howe st in vancouver, bc, canada). the vehicle was federally and provincially inspected for canadian importation by the same mechanic before these problems started to happen. it was deemed to be in exceptional mechanical and working condition for its age and mileage. however the vehicle is now longer safe to drive because of this abs/trac/vsc defect, despite it being otherwise perfectly drivable. toyota must issue the same recalls that they posted for defective trac and vsc for the 2003 year sequoia models for the 2002 sequoia models. sequoia vehicles haven't received any hardware or software updates as far as abs/trac/vsc systems are concerned between 2001 and 2003, proof being that subsequent model years from 2001 all experience the same defects for the same reasons. 2001-2002 sequoia vsc recalls need to be issued now!

Vsc/abs/skid light comes on intermittently, at differing speeds, at random intervals, accompanied by grinding noise and braking action. during some of these random occurrences, especially when driving at highway speeds, the action can pull the car quickly and forcefully to the right and on a few occassions this has almost resulted in loss of control. i read on edmunds.com and other sites (including http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1gen-sequoia/76829-file-complaint-nhsta-regarding-vsc-abs/) that this is a well-known, and well documented problem! why haven't you mandated a recall for this dangerous situation????!!! i'm concerned that my wife may be driving down the interstate and the problem will suddenly and violently pull the car to the right, and she will hit another car or lose control and crash. how many crashes, injuries, and, heaven forbid, deaths, will have to happen before you act?

The vehicle is a toyota sequoia 2002 2 wheel drive, and i have had three incidents so far. the first time was driving in the high way at a steady speed of 65 mph when the car all of the suden jerked to the left and a beeping went off and the track off and vsc track came on. the problenm is that there is no warning at all and it just happen in a matter of seconds. my concern is that i use this vehicle just when my family is with me. i wonder if accidents with fatalities need to occur before somebody do something about it.

Same problem like everyone else, traction control, vsc, brake light, and abs light on. dealership says no recall but they recalled all 2003 models for the same issue. abs computer module. part# 89541-0c050. vehicle lights are off when vehicle is started, after 2-3 miles all the lights come on then the car is hard to handle due to traction control making the car unstabable. also with abs light on, braking is very bad. constant fight to keep the vehicle straight during braking.

2002 toyota sequoia vsc/ traction control system started to malfunction in june 2011 vehicle has 128,000 miles. took it to the dealership and they said that it needs a new yaw rate sensor @800.00dollars. also that there is a chance that this doesn't fix the problem the suv may need an ecu at a cost of an aditional 900.00. thats crazy!!!! this has happened at all different range of speeds. happeneing more often lately and seems very dangerous when activates and makes the vehicle unstable.

Anti-lock braking system engages suddenly with power loss and front end vibration. vehicle stability control and traction control lights illuminate on dash. abs and vsc lights remain on (abs and stability control therefore disengaged) and cannot be turned back on by operator. when vehicle is turned off, system appears to reset, but the problem repeats after restarting and driving several miles. problem occurred twice today, on two separate drive events within a 2 our period.

I have experienced chilling and dangerous malfunctions of the abs, vsc/track system in my (owned since new) 2002 sequoia. the vsc/vsc track lights illuminate and a disconnect alarm (beeping tone) is initiated. the system failure pulls the car abruptly off course. immediate correction must be made to stay on the road. this has happened several times within the past 6 months with the system automatically re-setting itself after turning off the key and re-starting the engine. today's incident was the most violent and the system does not re-set. probably a good thing. looking at user complaints on the internet causes one to wonder why the public has not been protected by the nhtsa requiring a recall. my experience has been toyota dealerships are turning their backs on this issue. for safety sake, this should not be ignored!! i find it hard to believe that we can spend time and money to preserve a salamander in this country and yet ignore a highway safety issue such as this. the complaints on this issue have been many and around for a while. so many of us out here are reaching out to you for help. please help by considering a recall on these vehicles. very truly yours,...an experienced auto mechanic, licensed and experienced (a&p) aircraft mechanic, gulfstream 550 safety & standards pilot.

I have owned my 2002 toyota sequoia since january of 2002. since then we have had numerous problems with the brakes and now the vsc/abs skid control. for starters the front brake pads and rotors had to be changed and re-surfaced with approximately 30,000 miles on the vehicle. then the same thing again with approximately 60,000 miles. before the second repair i did some research and saw there was a tsb for larger calipers and rotors on the vehicle. this is a classic case of cost cutting and under-engineering to increase profit margins. i went to my local toyota dealership and ask for the repair to be done by toyota at their expense. they would not do this for me. now with approximately 99,000 miles on the car i have a faillure of the vsc/abs skid control. this is going to be a very expensive repair. i want toyota to finally own up to my situation. the vsc/abs problem is very frequent among my year model and deserves a recall. once this system is de-activated by faillure the sequoia becomes less maneuverable and more dangerous to its occupants and all those cars it shares the road with. please join me and do what ou can to make toyota make both the underpowered rotors and calipers and the abs skid control system madatory recall items for the 02 sequoia.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. the contact noticed that the stc light and vsc tract sensor light illuminated and the front end of the vehicle shook violently when he was driving at 70 mph. the contact pulled over and could find nothing wrong. when he turned the vehicle back on, the lights were still on although it no longer shook. when he got out and came back a couple hours later, the lights had turned off. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the dealer could not find anything wrong. recently, the lights illuminated more frequently and sometimes the vehicle shook and other times, it did not. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership but the dealer still could not find anything wrong. the failure continued. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership where the contact was informed that the yaw sensor was defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired at the dealership. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 142,000. the failure mileage was approximately 30,000-bk

2002 toyota sequoia while driving at moderate speeds (40 - 50mph) abruptly pulls to the right, vsc traction lights come on, hear a grinding noise. after about 3 seconds the grinding noise stopped on 2 occasions and the pull to the right stops and seems fine. vsc traction lights stay on. dealer diagnosed the problem as the skid control computer or ecu - 650.00 and the yaw rate sensor 401.00. has occured 4 times in the last 2 weeks. there is a recall on the 2003 sequoia electronic stability control system but not the 2002. there appear to be quite a few complaints about both of the parts that are mentioned above. very dangerous driving situation when it occurs.

Trac light/vsc lights came on while driving down the road. then the car pulled to the right and a grinding noise sounding like the anti-locking brake mechanism is activating. this is an extremely dangerous malfunction. i've seen that the 2003 model has a recall out for the same thing, and after seeing many others having this same occurrence with the 2002 model, they should expand the date range to cover the 2002 as well! it happened twice this weekend and it's happened 4-5 times previous to this recent incident (one earlier incident had my stepdaughter driving the sequoia and the power shut completely off while driving!). the mechanics told us they couldn't pull any related codes the first time we took it in. we need to take this in again immediately, but why should i have to pay the full price when this is obviously a defective part they've created? i was traveling at 70 mph on interstate-10 the first time it happened this past weekend and in-town at a slower speed (40 mph) the second incident. luckily nobody was in the lane next to me or i'd have hit them for sure!

Vsc, seat belt and check engine light randomly started coming on about 130,000 mi. tansky toyota service did brake work, the lights were off for several weeks but then would come off and on. we ignored it because we had just had it in to the dealer, it seemed to be a nuisance in an older vehicle but not dangerous. about 165,000 miles the vehicle developed a sudden loss of power in traffic. we speculated it was the lever that shifts from 4wd to 2wd. the dealer replaced that for $400, the lights were off for 3 days, then back on. now, we have had maybe five instances of sudden loss of power. this total loss of power usually occurs after driving 10 minutes locally, and after stopping at a light. turning the ignition off, and restarting fixes the issue. tansky toyota acts like they have never heard of such a thing, but when i look online every toyota blog is full of people just like me. i know it is an old vehicle. i just want to know how much will it cost me to really fix this problem. we have started only using this vehicle for non-critical driving locally. *tr

About a year ago, i started to experience problems that's related to the vehicle stability control (vsc) system on my 2002 toyota sequoia. the problem occurs intermittently and when it does occurs, it happens during initial acceleration. during this time, the vsc light would start blinking and i would not be able to accelerate. braking would require tremendous force applied to activate it. there was at least one incident where the vsc activated during highway driving, but that incident lasted approximately 5 or so seconds. however, it did require that i suddenly apply the brake and started pumping it for the vsc to de-activate. due to the intermittent nature, i took the vehicle to a local repair shop for diagnostic and they did find that error codes were present relating to the vsc. though the problem could not be pinpointed on the initial visit to the repair shop. subsequent occurrences prompted me to bring the vehicle back to the repair shop for further diagnostic. eventually it was recommended to me to replace the speed sensors which i authorized. after the replacement, the problem tend to have gone away. recently, i started to intermittently experience a similar problem with vsc light blinking briefly whenever i pull out of a drive way performing at least an 80 degree turn. this time around the problem isn't as severe and is very infrequent. i would say in a week of commuting, i would experience it maybe once or twice. of course this is compared to previous incidents where i was experiencing the vsc problem almost half the time. earlier this week, i read there was a 2003 toyota sequoia recall which has the exact symptom and problem i've been experiencing on my 2002 sequoia. i strongly urge the nhtsa to recommend toyota to include the recall for 2002 sequoia model year as well. thank you for your attention and time! *tr
05/01/20021000
I noted today the recall of 2003 toyota sequoia's due to issues with the vsc system. i am concerned tghat this does not include the 2002 models as i have had recurring issues with the vsc since day 1. at low speed, particularly on grades or while making sharp turns, the vsc will cause my vehcile to temporarily lose power. i have repored this on several occasion both to toyota and via telephone. it is so bad that i now know locations on my regular drives during which this will occur. so, i either go a little faster than i ight otherwise on grades or i swerve out befoe making turns to make the angle less acute. obviously, not the safety we'd expect in a $40k vehicle. this issue also occurs going over slightly jarring bumps such as steep speedbumps or potholes. the vehicle temporarily loses power, which in this case can be possibly even more dangerous because we are often being followed by other vehicles traveling at normal speed.

While driving at even speeds and without turning the wheel or applying the brakes or gas, the car will suddenly swerve to the right all by itself. additionally, the anti-lock brakes seem to have a problem with engaging even when i am not in a skid or heavy braking pattern. i have filed two complaints with toyota corporate and have been told there is nothing they can do. the problem has gotten progressively worse and because i fear for my safety and the safety of my passengers, i have taken my car to a toyota dealership and had the yaw rate sensor replaced. i visited two dealerships in my area and both were familiar with sequoias (model years 2001-2003 and some 2004) having this problem. my internet research suggests there are many people having this problem. according to toyota, my yaw rate sensor is faulty and it detects that my car is skidding even though it is not. when that happens, the skid control system attempts to correct the skid. however, since i wasn't skidding to begin with, the correction causes the car to swerve rapidly and uncontrollably to the right, generally into the next lane. i have narrowly avoided hitting cars several times. toyota tells me that there is also a brake booster problem and that i may need to replace the skid control computer. i find this unacceptable. i do not have the $3-5k to do all this work. i did replace the yaw rate sensor, which cost me $811 and i'm hoping that will fix the problem, but this is not a maintenance or repair issue. this is a faulty part sold by a car manufacturer and they are not doing anything to help the consumers who purchased from them. based on my personal experience, i am certain people have died or will die from this problem. it comes on so quickly that you cannot possibly avoid it. i feel this warrants immediate inspection by the nhtsa. this started a couple of years ago on a sporadic basis and has gotten progressively worse/more frequent.

Vsc trac, vsc off,all on at once.obd ii codes point to speed sensor, brake pedal switch and abs computer malfunction. dealer recommends changing brake booster and abs computer system. from the available information on the internet this is very common problem for first generation toyota sequoias. the abs and vsc malfunction can longer stopping distance, and swerving under emergency circumstance and should be a safety concern. *tr

I owned a 2002 toyota sequoia, there are times when entering a roadway or on an highway the vehicle looses power due to the vsc, abs trac warning lights and engine light, these light comes on and stays on. i think there should be a recall on this model also, this poses a vehicle safety issue especially on the highway, i find that the vehicle looses power when going through a bumpy road. i have took it to the toyota dealership and they said its the responsibility of the consumer to get this fix, i found that alot of customer on the internet having the same problem with this model. toyota should fix this problem also. *tr

Toyota sequoia 2002 abs, parking brake light and trak warning lights turn on and stay on when the vehicle starts. toyota dealers say that the computer in the abs system is bad. the vehicle when going thru a bump or an uneven terrain loses power momentarily. it happens very often, almost every time the vehicle passes on bumps. i claimed to toyota that this is a safety design problem but toyota refuses to fix it. repairs are about 3 to 4 thousand dollars. *tr

I own a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 and have had a couple near accidents in the last few weeks due to a major malfunction with the skid control sensor and braking computer. the first instance was while driving on the interstate at 70+ mph. the symptoms are that the brakes pulsate from right to left repeatedly, while i'm not braking. the car shakes violently and is difficult to keep under control. i have been to the local vero beach, florida toyota dealer and they recalibrated the system about a month ago. the problem persists and is apparently a common problem with this vehicle. the skid control ecu is faulty and seems to be very common on consumer chat forums i've found online. the estimate i received today from toyota was in excess of $3,000 and still doesn't guarantee a proper repair. it seems that this problem should have been a cause for a recall years ago, but nothing has been done to date to my knowledge. i'm concerned for my family's safety and felt that your firm needs to be made aware of my situation and many other toyota sequoia owners from what i can tell. please let me know if you have any advise. *tr

2002 toyota sequoia has been operating since @ 62,000 miles with a non-functioning vsc/abs system. see that this has not yet been officially recalled, but can find all kinds of info and complaints on the web about this issue. dashboard lit up with all relative warning lights & vehicle has no abs nor vsc functionality. how could this important safety features well documented, chronic failure not be recalled? it is not exclusive to the 2002 model year either. this is very inappropriate. how many people have to die or get injured before this well documented safety equipment failure is responsibly addressed with a recall. i hope my complaint helps the tally towards this recall. consumers of this vehicle have bought it with a critical safety system that fails. toyota must be made to rectify this product safety and quality issue! *tr

2002 toyota sequoia vsc (traction control) system randomly fails along with brake lights coming on the dash. this happens often is and completely random. the car has been into the dealer on several instances and the dealer has been unable to correct the issue. when the vsc system fails the car looses all traction control and makes it very difficult to manager the massive rear wheel drive car in bad weather. the brake light also comes on randomly -- often scares the driver and has the potential to cause a very serious accident. again, this happens often and then manages to re-set itself. sometime is only lasts minutes and other times it last days. this is a very serious issue and will cause serious accidents. the is a known issue and this problem is being experienced by many sequoia owners. normal driving will lead up to this failure --- again it is random and not linked to any one event. when it happens the operator looses all traction control along with several lights (inclusive of the brake light) being displayed on the dash. the car is near impossible to control in the snow or rain given the rear wheels start to slip immediately. as stated, this has been into the toyota dealer several times and they have not been able to fix the issue. note -- this has been happening ever since the car was purchased brand new from the dealer and lately the occurrences have increased significantly. *tr

I have taken my truck to multiple toyota dealerships to identify why the vsc trac, trac lights, brake and abs lights are on. they continue to give me the run around. the latest dealership wants to add and remove parts at will with no certain what the problem is. originally they told me that it would be $1921 and now they are coming back saying it will be an additional $2500. *tr

While driving a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 2 wheel drive suv near the end of march 2009, the trac off, vsc trac, brake and abs warning lights simultaneously came on. i was traveling approximately 55 mph on a dry road at night in heavy traffic. i moved off the highway to check the manual which emphasized the possible seriousness of each light. it said to contact a toyota dealer. i called earnhardt toyota in mesa arizona who finally worked on the vehicle several days later for the vsc/trac/brake/abs problem, and a front brake vibration/pulsation. no help on the pulsation problem since i was told i needed to turn the rotors again. on the vehicle stability control/traction control/anti-lock braking system/brake warning lights, the service associate offered that it was a common problem, could be caused by a loose gas cap or an expensive computer (in the thousands of dollars). he sated that no codes were set other than a low voltage which could be caused by a bad battery or corroded connection. i cleaned the battery terminals completely, checked the battery, and made sure the gas cap was tight. the warning lights now come on at some point every time i drive the sequoia. earnhardt toyota told me it should not affect the actual braking systems. how do they know that? being told of a false continuous or intermittent safety warning light can lull one into a questionable sense of safety. these lights and safety systems need to work reliably without having toyota just say they know about this common problem. does it affect actual vehicle stability control and emergency braking? on numerous internet sites, i find this same problem is mentioned frequently. also a large number of complaints are on file now with the nhtsa. i rely on the warning lights and their underlying systems to work as advertised, but toyota now makes me doubt that reliance. does there have to be a large body count for nhtsa to order a recall to fix this well known safety problem? *tr

My vsc and vsc trac off lights in dash panel lit up. i looked in owner's manual and it said to take the vehicle to the dealer if that happens. dealer said i had a bad ecu computer and it needed to be replaced at $2500. after this was fixed and i went to pick vehicle up i noticed the light was still on. the dealer said that another code came up and the steering angle sensor needed to be replaced at $614. i think that is crap and that these systems are related and go together and both should be covered by extended warranty. *tr

Driving a 2002 toyota sequoia and suddenly the truck rattles and shakes violently and vehicle almost stops in the middle of the road and had to drive to the shoulder to avoid accident. the vehicle stability control, abs, and traction control lights on the dash board lit up and vehicle had to stop. turned off engine, removed key, waited and restarted truck again. lights went off and after a short drive from incident , it happened again narrowly avoiding an accident. vehicle violently shakes and slowed down. i had to turn off the engine again and restart. i took the truck to a local toyota dealership to have it diagnosed and problem could not be replicated. this is not the first time this happened on this vehicle. had history of at least 3-5 separate incidents far apart in occurrence but resolves or hides itself. no parts replaced as of yet, but aware of other owner's having same problems with vsc/abs /trac on this toyota model. *tr
