Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2003 sequoia passenger vehicles manufactured from april 1, 2002 through april 17, 2003. the center position of the steering angle sensor (sas) may not be stored correctly due to improper logic of the skid control ecu programming. the vehicle stability control (vsc) system could activate at low speed for a few seconds during acceleration from a stopped position.
Consequence SummaryShould this occur, the vehicle may not accelerate as quickly as the driver expects, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryToyota will notify owners and dealers will replace the skid control ecu free of charge. the safety recall began on june 11, 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

On april 28, 2010, toyota motor north america submitted a defect information report (nhtsa recall no. 10v-176) to nhtsa describing a problem in the vehicle stability control (vsc) system in approximately 50,000 model year (my) 2003 toyota sequoia vehicles.according to the report the centering position of the steering angle sensor (sas) in the my 2003 vehicles may not be stored correctly due to a logic problem with the skid control computer programming.the vsc system uses the information from the sas to calculate the driver's intended vehicle direction.this information is cross referenced to sensors that tell the system which direction the vehicle is actually going and the system will, if it determines a variance indicating the vehicle is in a over-steer or under-steer condition, reduce throttle control and apply braking to make a correction in vehicle direction towards what the system believes is the driver's intended path.toyota dealers will replace the skid control electronic control unit in recalled vehicles.toyota has indicated to nhtsa that it does not believe that inappropriate activations of the vsc system present an unreasonable risk to safety because it believes the activations are rare and tend to occur at low speeds when the vehicle is fully controllable and that the activations do not last more than a few seconds.based on interviews with complainants odi believes that the majority of the inappropriate activations of the vsc system occur when turning at low speeds, such as when a driver is pulling into or across the flow of oncoming traffic.complainants report the effect produced by the malfunction of the vsc system is to leave the vehicle without the ability to accelerate up to speed, essentially leaving them creeping along exposed to oncoming traffic, because of the brake activation and reduction of throttle control caused by the vsc system.complainants report that the events can last up to 10 seconds and some complaints report that oncoming traffic had to unexpectedly swerve or severely brake to avoid colliding with the malfunctioning sequoia.during the vsc event the brake lights of the sequoia are not illuminated such that the following traffic is without indication that braking is occurring, nor would the following traffic expect the driver to be applying brakes in such a situation.several near misses were reported.there were also reports of the vsc system malfunctioning and applying vehicle braking unexpectedly while traveling at highway speeds.some complainants reported experiencing malfunction activations of the vsc at both low and higher speeds.odi counted 140 incidents of lower speed inappropriate activations of the vsc system (approximately 10 mph or less - similar to an inappropriate traction control system activation) and 43 incidents of higher speed inappropriate activations of the vsc system (some as high as 60 mph).these numbers include complainants who experienced both types of failures.this investigation is closed based on toyota's recall.

Odi has received 64 consumer reports and toyota has received 96 reports that allege incidents of inappropriate activation of either the electronic stability control system [toyota nomenclature: vehicle stability control (vsc)] and/or the traction control system in model year (my) 2003 toyota sequoia vehicles.during the activation of either system the driver loses throttle control and one or more brakes may apply causing the vehicle to slow suddenly.during these activation events the brake lights are not illuminated to signal to following traffic that the vehicle is slowing.some of the complainants allege almost being struck by following or crossing traffic because of the unexpected deceleration.in response to odi's information request letter for pe08-072, toyota indicated that it has reviewed the reports submitted to odi and to toyota and that it believes that there are several issues responsible for the reported incidents.it is toyota's opinion that the vsc system was operating as designed and that the reports are most likely related to the application of the traction control system rather than the vsc system.at this time toyota has not determined that a safety-related defect exists in the my 2003 sequoia vehicles. this preliminary investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-006) to continue to investigate the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

The toyota sequoia went nose down and started to make a grinding noise pulling hard to the right. loss of power happened and i had no control. i tried to accelerate but it seemed like there was no response. it has done this three times. i feel like i will hit someone or someone will hit me!

My wife was on freeway, driving our 2003 toyota sequoia limited 2wd, when vsc light lit up and a buzzer sounded. at the same time, her vehicle started to deaccelerate on its own, causing vehicles behind her to have to brake to keep from rear-ending her vehicle. this was accompanied by a horrific grinding and banging sound. my wife found a safer place to pull to the side of the freeway and stop the vehicle. a tow truck was called and vehicle was flat-bed towed to repair garage.

One day the vsc trac, vsc off, brake, abs lights all came on the dash, shortly after this happened we received a recall notice in the mail stating this exact problem. so i made an appointment at our local toyota dealership for them to look at it and fix. the first time i dropped it off for the day they called after and said the machine to test the vehicle was down, and that it would be a day or two before it was repaired, well i needed my vehicle so i went a picked it up. about a month later i made another appointment and returned to the dealership where they finally tested my vehicle and proceeded to tell me that my vehicle did not fit the criteria for vin identification. i really do not know how this is possible considering all the information stated on the recall is exactly what is wrong with my vehicle. after days of research i have learned that multiple sensors and ecu needs to be replaced costing in the range of $2000.00 plus dollars. also i have read multiple consumer complaints just like this one. these lights are on the vehicle for a reason and toyota put the recall out for a reason so fix the problems!!!! *tr

Problem one: brake warning light comes on at random but then doesn't come back on at next restart of car. brake fluid and all mechanics are ok. braking doesn't seem to be affected but i am worried that there will be an abs failure that i'll ignore because of this faulty warning light. sometimes the stability control activates for no reason at low speed. problem two: frame is nearly rusted out. there is a recall for the similar tundra, and supposedly a recall for these particular sequoias in some states, but nothing comes up for my vehicle in indiana. vehicle, purchased from toyota dealer oxmoor toyota a year ago, is unsafe to drive. *tr

I just bought this used 2003 toyota sequoia on may 25, 2012. i noticed the warning lights indicating a defective traction control system and abs system on my way home from the dealership. they assured me the system works fine and that it has something to do with the computer module. all the following warning lights are on at the same time: trac, vsc off, and abs lights. i also checked the vehicle history on the toyota website and it is recorded that the toyota dealer worked on this problem on 07/23/2009 when the car had 97,187 miles. i have done a lot of research on this and it seems 50,000 sequoia's were recalled for this problem, however, my sequoia's vin was not on the list. please help. in addition the lighting on the dashboard does not work.

Continuous problems with abs vsc check engine lights. these lights have gone on several times through the last 9 years, 90,000 miles.we have brought this vehicle to toyota dealers as well as mechanics many times. we have replaced the yaw rate sensor, oxygen sensor and were quoted a price of 2500 to replace another sensor/computer. other times they cannot read the codes in order to make a diagnosis. a few months later the lights are back on. many other 03 sequoia owners have had similar problems. we feel that there is a major defect in these sequoias that toyota has not taken responsibility for. this is a safety issue/concern.they prefer to tell us the vehicle is not under warranty anymore.

It was raining, i was going aruond a turn ,10 - 15 mph the back tire started to spin, the vsc trac, vsc off,and abs lights came on, this is after the trk. went to the dealer to check out a recall on the vsc. they said it was'nt under a recall, we parked the sequoia and wont drive it untill it's repaired, safety reasons, i moved it , tryed to go over a curb on an angle and the right rear tire just was spining on the asphalt road. this cant be good for the sequoia ,its 4 wheel drive, and its making a noise, in the drive train ,clunking?? it slides in the rain (bad ) and wont stop on wet roads very well , it slides to a stop. i dont have alot of time to research the vsc problem ,but it sounds like all the sequoia's 03-05 have the same problem, for the cost of this trk. i hope toyota will fix this problem.

My toyota sequoia 2003 is having abs lights, brake light and vsc/trac lights on problem. bought it brand new at the toyota dealer in hayward, california. vsc/trac light came on when i first bought the car(brand new from the lot); they replaced the steering angle sensor. these lights are on and off through out the years. found out the there is a recall last year, 2010, but i did not get any notice. took the car to the dealer june 30, 2011, paid for the check up, initiated the flashing of ecu to correct trouble code c1247, and they said that ecu needs to be replaced and would cost me $1500.00 minimum, maybe more to fix the vsc/trac/abs/brake lights problems. my car is now 110.000 miles and according to toyota -tim howe of 1800 331-4331 hot line number, they can not give any free service and parts due to over 100k miles on the car. this is not my fault, there were 50,000 2003 toyota sequoia have been affected with this kind of problem. the fact that i did not received any recall notice to them, it is just fair ,toyota should cover the repair whether the miles is less or over 100k miles. i maintain my car to the fullest best, just to name one record, i spent $2000.00 for valves adjustments and belts replacements at the same dealer. i think toyota should cover this repair as per the recall issued on april 2010. this repair is a big amount of money on my part, considering my job is only temporary. any assistance to give pressure to toyota will be highly appreciated.

My wife and i own a 2003 toyota sequoia, which we purchased new in 2003. we use it sparingly, so it only had 18,743 original miles on it as of december 23, 2010 (a date referred to again below). the vehicle has been regularly maintained by copeland toyota, brockton, ma, and was trouble-free until recently. on november 23, 2010, i was pulling into a parking space with my wife in the vehicle. i had come to almost a complete stop in the parking space with my foot on the brake pedal, when the engine revved and the vehicle lurched forward into the next parking space in front of me (fortunately unoccupied). on december 17, 2010, again with my wife in the vehicle, i had backed out of my driveway onto the street and had the vehicle at almost a complete stop with my foot on the brake pedal when the engine revved and the vehicle lurched backwards up a hill behind me. on both occasions i was able to apply pressure on the brake pedal to finally stop the vehicle. i checked the floor mat, as did the toyota dealer, and found no problem with it. i took the vehicle to the toyota dealer on december 20, 2010. the service advisor professed to not knowing what caused the lurching, said there was no related recall on this particular vehicle, and told me that their diagnostic computer showed codes in the system indicating a faulty vehicle stability control engine control unit (vsc ecu). it took the dealer four days to get toyota to release a replacement ecu, which was installed on december 23, 2010 at a cost (materials and labor) of $650.00. this was clearly a dangerous situation; we were fortunate that it occurred where it did.

Skid control activated at low speed with grinding noise, mileage 66,000; warning lights for traction control, abs, parking brake, stability control all activated. took into dealer where supposedly repaired, drove 5 miles and happened again. back at the dealer now, waiting to see who pays. this happened in 2004 at very low mileage and the faulty skid control ecu unit was replaced, not reprogrammed, at my insistence, having been aware of the factory service bulletin.
12/02/2010104000
After years of intermittent problems with the abs/vsc/trac lights coming on, i brought my car in for the recall requiring a software update. the update was preformed, and then the dealer says the yaw sensor needs to be replaced or the lights will not go off. after researching this online, it appears that thousands of sequoia owners have this problem. unless i submit to the dealer's extortion of $700, i have a faulty abs system because of the yaw sensor that has a high failure rate. this should be recalled.

Brought my 2003 toyota sequoia into the dealership to address a safety recall to upgrade program logic in its vehicle stability control (vsc) system. after the work was completed, the car was returned to me with both my vsc lights and the abs light permanently illuminated. the dealer put it back on the testing station and determined that now my deceleration sensor (yaw rate sensor) is faulty and needs to be replaced. this component is an integral part of the entire vsc system, and is a very expensive repair. i am now facing a huge bill which amounted from bringing in the car to address a safety recall. dealer is not willing to assume any responsibility. toyota customer service says there is nothing they will do about the situation, and i need to resolve it with the dealer. the vehicle skid control system helps provide integrated control of the systems such as anti-lock brake system, traction control, engine control, etc. this system automatically controls the brakes and engine to help prevent the vehicle from skidding when cornering on a slippery road or surface or operating steering wheel abruptly. mine is faulty, and neither toyota nor the dealership care.

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia. recently, the abs, vsc and vsc trak lights have come on on the dash and stay on. these systems are safety-related in that they control the braking and vehicle control when in an emergency situation. in the event of slippery conditions, the failure of this system would make a bad situation worse, by not allowing the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia. currently, the vsc trac, vsc, abs and emergency handbrake lights are on. after many visits to the dealer and repair shops, the problem cannot be resolved. everyone seems to think this issue is not related to a mechanical issue, but to an electronic sensor. unfortunately, only the manufacturer/dealership can remedy this problem. because this is a toyota-fix-only, we cannot simply afford to get this fix. we have been quoted almost $700 to fix trhis issue. this is a difficult amount to digest, especially with a family with multiuple kids.

2003 toyota sequoia, vsc and abs lights came on and off several times @ 20k miles and now @ 80k miles. first time @ 20 k miles, dealer didn't find any problem so they said i might forget to tighten the gas cap...but now after 5 years, the vsc and abs light started popping up again when i was driving 60 mile/hour, i have brought the ca to dealer and this time they have chagred me almost $ 500 to get these lights came off including a sesires of unnecessary parts replacing and tune up. less than one month, these lights - vsc and abs came on again, brought back to dealer, they said it failed for another code which require another $ 500 to get it fixed. i was frustrated so i took the car back home, but i still feel unsafe when driving it. i think toyota should consider this issue and recall since so many customers have reported a similar issue - vsc and abs light intermittent issue.

Throughout the time period i have owned my 2003 toyota sequoia, i have experienced dangerous low speed vehicle control issues, when traveling on slippery surfaces, relating to the vehicle's stability control system. at speeds between a few miles per hour and perhaps as much as 15 miles per hour, on muddy or icy roads, the vehicle stability control system will kick in, probably as it should, while braking or initiating a turn, as indicated by a vsc warning light illuminating in the drivers control console. however, while it may be appropriate for the vsc system to respond, the vsc in the toyota sequoia responds in a dangerous manner which is much less effective and appropriate than the vsc systems in all other vehicles i own or have driven. when the vsc system is activited, as indicated by the vsc light coming on, power is lost to all wheels in the vehicle and vehicle handling changes abruptly. the change in handling results in severe understeer, as compared to when power is belng delivered to all four wheels, and the vehicle significantly overshoots any corner the driver is trying to maneouver the vehicle around. whereas i am a careful driver and plan for such issue, i have not so far experienced an accident as a result of this issue, but should the vsc issue arise at an inappropriate time, when there is less room for maneouvering, such as during an emergency maneouver, the sudden severe understeer could definitely result in an accident.

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia that has a faulty skid control unit and needs the ecu replaced. although toyota has issued a recall notice for 2003 sequoias for this problem, i was told that my car is not included on that list since they are only targeting certain cars from that year, not all cars with this problem. i was told by the dealership that it will cost me close to $3,000 to fix my car, which i cannot afford. i have only 35,000 miles on this vehicle. i have two young children that i drive in this car and have had some very close calls due to the car not functioning properly due to the faulty vsc. i feel that our safety is in jeopardy due to toyota's refusal to fix a problem that they know about and are indeed recalling for. my 2003 toyota sequoia should be included in the recall list and fixed like all of the other 2003 sequoias with this problem. thank you for your help. *tr

The vsc track and engine lights came on at the same time at exactly 108,000 miles. this has been a very reliable vehicle except when it seems the computer parts are programmed to fail. i use to commute in heavy slow traffic in southern california when my brake light would come on when using the brakes in traffic. the dealer could not find a problem.. the brake light will go off after the key is turned off and back on again however the vsc/track light still on appear t be a computer defect. i see many problems with this could lead to vehicle tipping big problem maybe this issue is related to toyotas vehicles super accelerating just a thought! *tr

We own a toyata sequoia ltd 2003 model year. we took the vehicle several times to the dealer regarding braking issue. if we ever used the emergency brake, for some reason the right side front and rear brakes will start to lock up, that would shake the suv and we had to pull over. the dealer never determined what the problem was even though we ended up paying for repairs that never made a difference. eventually we stopped using the emergency brake on our vehicle, that also stopped the right side wheels from locking up. during this period the car parked in our driveway also crashed into our garage and broke the garage doors. with emergency brakes on and in park, middle of the night we there was a loud bang, the suv had crashed into the garage; even though the suv was in park position gear and with emergency brakes on. *tr

My 2003 toyota sequoia has an issue with the vehicle stability control (traction control system). the vsc computer continues to break leaving the car with no traction control. on snowy and icy roads the car will spin out of control due to the size of the vehicle and no assistance from the vsc to slow the car down. i have to keep the car in 4wd all the time to keep it from sliding on snowy or wet streets. this is a known problem with the toyota sequoia and toyota refuses to take responsibility for the issue. there are pages upon pages of complaints all over the internet describing the same issue. toyota refuses to warranty the problem or conduct a recall. the part itself is approximately $1600. i have already had the vsc computer replaced once on the vehicle and now the new computer is broken again. it was first replaced on 1/24/07 when the vehicle had 25,253 miles on it. it broke again on 5/19/09 with 38,995 miles on it. the vehicle now has 43,000 miles on it and the vsc is still inoperable. i don't trust driving the car with my wife or child. but unfortunately i have to spend $2k to fix a vehicle just to trade it in. i have filed a complaint with toyota north america. they refuse to acknowledge there is a problem and have told me i have to accept responsibility for the vehicle no longer being on warranty. even though it only has 43,000 miles and they vsc has broken twice. i have grown increasing concerned about safety especially since i live in the midwest. nothing has been done to resolve the problem. that is my issue. *tr

2003 toyota sequoia limited. purchased new from dealer. intermittent problems over the years with vsc trac, trac off and abs lights going on (usually if tires were on slippery surface). lights usually went off on their own without incident. two years ago dealer under warranty replaced ecu computer and translate computer when car died after these lights went on. now lights are on again and not going off. warranty has expired. dealer charged me $160 to do a diagnostic which led them to tell me it'll cost $2,300 to do what amounts to exploratory surgery, and by the way, my airbags are disabled and they can't reset them without me paying said $2,300 and possibly much more as they use a trial and error approach to fixing whatever problem there is (car seems to be driving ok at the moment with the warning lights on.) a quick search of the internet showed dozens and dozens of people with the exact same problem, some with very serious safety problems (that i have not had yet). very disconcerting, especially since i also own a 2009 toyota camry! dealership very opaque about the problem - they don't seem to have a clue what the problem really is at root. from my basic research, it seems irrefutable that this problem is a serious design problem in 2003 toyota sequoias that has been known to toyota for many years. first, are you aware of this situation, and second, is there anything i can do except pay to supposedly fix the car? here is just one sample of a google search for toyota sequoia skid control computer where you can see comments that go back to january 2004: http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic181494.htm. *tr

Within a month of purchase in january 2003 the vsc & trac light were coming on upon vehicle start up sporadically for several weeks. on occasion the engine light would also come on. sometimes i would have a foot on the gas & it felt like the brake was being applied. i brought the vehicle in several times, and they said their wasn't an issue. i left it overnight and the lights didn't come on at 2000 miles. this continued sporadically for a year usually during colder weather. in january 2004 at 16,870 miles the vcs/trac came on when near toyota and finally was validated & replaced due to tsb br002-03, part#89630-0c011. the issue still continues still in colder weather. in december 2005, at 48,000 the vcs/trac & engine light were on, and stayed on all day & toyota replace the cat converter. two weeks later i return with all three lights on & they replace the cat converter again. now the issues are sporadic all year long. in august 2008 at 89,000 miles during service work they are able to pull codes with vsc/trac lights off. they replace ecm to correct steering angle & deceleration. the lights still came on last week again at start up and the vehicle slowed down pulling out of the driveway. still looking for a resolution... *tr

Vsc/trac/abs lights have been a nagging problem with my 2003 toyota sequoia the entire time i have owned it. i have had the sequoia to the dealer multiple times. the dealer has replaced both a sensor during one visit and the computer during another visit. still, intermittently one or two times a month, the lights come on while driving even on straight dry clear roads. pulling over and turning the engine off and re-starting the vehicle will sometimes turn the lights off but not always. i was told by the dealer that when my lights are on i do not have use of the vsc/trac or abs systems. unfortunately, when i take the vehicle to the dealer the lights have turned back off so there is no way to diagnose the problem. this in itself is a safety concern. you can bet that i will hold toyota accountable if there is ever an accident when these lights are on. this has absolutely made me upset to the point that i will never purchase another toyota ever again unless toyota issues a recall and replaces all of the sensors and related computer components so that the lights go off and stay off. i do want to mention that when the car was just a few days old the battery failed on me. upon taking it to the dealer i found out that internally some of the battery cells came loose from the connectors which did not give me enough voltage or amps to crank the engine over. this was replaced free of charge but i still wonder if this caused some sort of damage to the vsc/trac/abs electrical system components. *tr

I have a 2003 toyota sequoia sr5 4wd. it has been giving me the same problem since i bought it in 2003 brand new. the vsc off light and engine check lights are on almost all the time. i brought it to the dealer several times and they told me that it was due to the sensors on the brakes or that i needed a new brake pad and rotor. i have been doing the replacement deals for the past three times already and it is still giving me the same problem. i found out that there are many car owners who have reported the same problem and that it is due to a computer malfunction. it becomes a greater problem because the computer disables the vehicle control mechanism resulting in loss of skid control. the brakes fail to engage and there is no traction during a skid. it is a potentially hazardous situation when driving during the winter or when it is raining and the roads are wet and slippery. i was told to unplug the battery and plug it back it to restart the computer but it does not keep the vsc off and engine light from coming on. i am bringing it to the dealer again and hope to get them to really fix the problem. since this problem has been reported by many car owners, there should be a recall and the highway safety commission should require toyota to fix this problem for all owners for free. *tr

Vsc/trac off & abs failure requiring computer and yaw sensor replacement. i took my 2003 sequoia to the local dealers service dept. in 2006 because the lights mentioned above were on. they could not find anything wrong. i told them the car was making a loud noise and the steering wheel was pulling to the side - very hard to control. they could not mimic the problem and told me there was nothing wrong. i argued with them, but lost that argument. luckily for me the battery needed replacing in a few months, and when replaced problem went away. now that my warranty has expired (last month) the vsc/trac off and abs lights are on again. i didn't rush it in because of my prior experience or i would have had it in while it was under warranty. now they want $2200 to replace computer and yaw rate sensor. i see this is a very common problem and i am very unhappy with the service department and toyota. i contacted toyota and they refuse any responsibility although this is a very well know issue. it could be very dangerous under the right conditions. luckily my driving is in a very small community and i don't drive very fast. *tr

Vsc off and vsc trac warning lights keep coming on along with check engine light. had reset every time. dealer is vague on cause and says probably gas cap seal. replaced oxygen components one time. happening again. i suspect faulty part or computer with the car that is not yet documented. *tr

I bought 2003 toyota sequoia. i am getting the vsc traction control and abs light on. checked with other sequoia owner and they have similar problem. i went to checked the car and was told that the ecu computer is faulty. the faulty ecu needs to be replaced. since this is wide spread problem with 03 sequoia it should be recalled. this is a safety issue. here are the codes: c1203, c1223,c1244. *tr

Vsc off, abs, brake and tcs lights came on at the same time only at full stop (engine running). as soon as taking off (driving) with over 5 km/hr, all light went off. stopping the vehicle, all light will came on again. this cycle repeating with each and every stop. dealer determined than one of the vacuum hose cracked and reduced pressure at idle would cause light to come on. once hose have been replaced, problem was resolved. strongly advise sequoia owners before replacing any commuter components or expensive module, to talk to their dealers and have the vacuum system checked prior to any other steps. it is the less costly repair before any major ones. *tr

Skid control ecu module does not work on 2003 toyota sequoia. vsc /trac lights come on. nothing should have made this component fail dealer will not replace - out of warranty. multiple similar problems discussed online yet manufacture will not admit issue with workmanship. toyota needs to do a recall on this part (895410c062). *tr

The abs and skid control lights are on in my 2003 toyota sequoia. the dealer states that the skid control computer needs to be replaced. so right now, there is no skid control or abs available on my car because of this computer is bad. toyota will not do anything about it and i have filed a complaint case 200810010613. this is a safety issue. *tr

Vsc/trac and engine light came on. dealer said problem was o2 sensor. they replaced 02 sensor and all lights cleared. after one week the vsc0/trac lights came back on and they go on and off every time we drive the truck. dealer said we need to replace skid control ecu. we decided not to replace the unit because of 1800.00 cost. *tr

Purchased new in 07/2003, on 9/21/08, our sequoia with only 39,000 miles had its vsc trac, vsc off, & abs lights come on for no apparent reason. there was a bad sensor and a bad ecu. we located tsb.br006-06 for this problem where the recommended fix is replacement of the skid control computer because of a change in the software to correct the problem. this is a very expensive part. toyota customer service would not help. my dealer wanted $1,300 for the ecu and $330 for the sensor, but i got them down to $940 for the ecu and $240 for the sensor. after tax it was about $1300, plus $255 for three hours of labor. this is clearly, in my opinion a software bug, since the new ecu has a new program as stated in the tsb. i

2003 toyota skid control computer, i am writing to request that a formal complaint be filed to toyota. i recently took my car into my local toyota dealership because of a few lights that we on in my dash. the specific lights were the vsc, vsc off and the abs lights. after doing some research i see that this is a fairly common problem with toyota and their skid control computers. the problem is that it is not covered under the powertrain warranty and is a very expensive part to have replaced. my quote was for $1800 excluding tax. i purchased the vehicle with 47,000 miles and was offered an extended warranty up to 60,000, but it was a very expensive extended warranty so i decided to pass. the manufactures warranty for my car was 55,000 miles i believe and the lights came on at 55,500 miles....of course. i sincerely hope that there can be some sort of resolve for this such as a recall of the skid control computer or changing this issue to be covered under the power train section of the warranty as it is unfair for there to be so many people to be having the same problem around the same mileage and some of those people have serious consequences to the computers malfunction such as accidents and possible death. please take whatever action necessary to solve this unnecessary issue. *tr

Toyota sequoia 2003, vtrac and abs lights came up on the dash during a very wet interstate trek to michigan from california. had no cruise control before this, the cruise control failed the year before during the same wet trek across country! the toyota dealer in saginaw michigan told us that the computer controlling the vtrac and abs was displaying fault codes and needed to be replaced, cost $1200. this is a 5 year old vehicle with 70k miles on it now (the fault happened around 66k miles) which is now much harder to handle under heavy braking, which we need more and more with the low quality drivers out there. if the gas prices weren't so high, this truck would be out of here here, but we can't afford to sell it for the current value, and buy another vehicle, so this suv will now be limited to trips where we need the storage/towing capacity. so, even though we have 2 cars, we only really have 1 1/2 now. *tr

On 4 occasions dash light indicating vsc and brake problem appeared. each time the braking of the 2003 toyota sequoia was compromised. each time the truck was brought to toyota service center for repair. each toyota said they could not replicate the problem but replaced skid computer anyway. 8/20/08 problem recurred with dash brake indicator light coming on. braking again compromised, heard loud clunking sound coming from car while driving. immediately brought to scottsdale toyota service center. again, said they could not replicate problem and returned car with no repair. called toyota customer service and filed a complaint. toyota indicated complaint is now on record. problem with dash brake light coming on and braking diminished recurred again 8/27/08. after shutting engine off, indicator no longer lit and braking back to normal. i fear for both my safety and my families. simple google search indicates a large number of sequoia owners are having the same problem. *tr

I have a concern over why the abs, brake, and other lights would come on for no apparent reason on my 2003 toyota sequoia. on some websites i have found that this is not an isolated problem. wanting to know if action has been pursued for a recall in this matter. this occurs everyday, once the car is warmed up. *tr

Toyota sequoia 2003, bought new my complaint echoes what a lot of others are experiencing regarding the skid control computer which apparently affects the vsc/abc/ebrake. problem was identified over a year ago with the ebrake light randomly coming on during normal driving (restarting the car usually resolves), but eventually got to a point where the car thinks it's in a vehicle skid control situation and abs triggers and apply pressure to the gas pedal is inoperable. extremely dangerous situation as we were driving through our neighborhood filled with kids (and have 2 of our own) seems to be a pretty significant issue out there someone needs to look into it. *tr

I bought a used 2003 toyota sequoia in 2004. it currently has 30130 miles on it. i am the second owner. the problem: sporadic vsc/atrac malfunction. 1. i had been advised to go in for toyota campaign ssc 50j for ball joint safety recall. this was done at fremont toyota on may 30, 2008. 2. on june 12, 2008, the vehicle skid control and traction control starts disengaging on its own, while i was driving the vehicle on us 101 north freeway on my way home from a trip to monterrey bay aquarium. 3. description of the problem: the vsc/atrac indicator lights changes state to on and the system will inadvertently engage and disengage without any warning. to reset,i had to pull over to the side of the freeway and restart the vehicle. the problem repeated a dozen times, until i reached home. so i took the vehicle in to fremont toyota on june 14, 2008 and was told there is error code c1231 and c1203 and the reason is faulty engine and traction control computers. 4. i was not convinced with the answer and decided to do my own research on the nhtsa site and discussion forums on the net and found out that to solve this issue, toyota modified its skid control logic and the vsc communication between skid control computer and the engine control module to rectify this problem (please refer nhtsa# 00303 & br00203, diagnostics codes c1231 & c1203). 5. i called up fremont toyota in california about what i found out and was told by the service advisor that i had to replace the existing vsc & ecu computers, with updated/redesigned modules at my expense (costs of $2700) i think this is unreasonable since, i consider this a manufacturing defect since the fix calls for a computer upgrade. i am writing to let your office know that toyota dealer and toyota north america will not acknowledge this problem. i can be reached at (510) 471-6937 if you have further questions. sincerely, shaji ravindranathan *tr

Vsc/abs/skid control computer failure at 50,000 miles in 2003 toyota sequoia sr5 2wd. this is a widely known problem, for which toyota proposes replacement at consumer cost of $1500+ for out of warranty vehicles. requested outcome: toyota should replace the computer at no cost for part; this is clearly a defect and should not be required for consumer to replace. *tr

2003 toyota sequoia sr5 90,000 miles - since i purchased this vehicle brand new in july 2003, the vsc trac, vsc off and brake lights have turned on by itself intermittently. until the weekend of dec 22, 2007, i regarded this issue, more or less, as a nuisance problem. on dec 22, 2007 the vsc trac and vsc off lights came on and pretty much have remained on. on two occasions, the slip indicator light started to blink, causing a loud noise and vibration by the operation of the brakes. *tr

1.) no events leading up to failure 2.) vsc off / trac off lights on dash stay on continually, and vehicle stability control is effectively disabled. researching this issue on the internet finds that this is a common issue. 3.) toyota dealer is recommending replacement of the vsc ecu (stability control/traction control computer) at a cost of $1500-$2000. based on the numbers of these reported incidents, i feel this is a defect and is an exorbitant amount to be paid by the owners of these vehicles. *tr
