Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2003 sequoia passenger vehicles manufactured from april 1, 2002 through april 17, 2003. the center position of the steering angle sensor (sas) may not be stored correctly due to improper logic of the skid control ecu programming. the vehicle stability control (vsc) system could activate at low speed for a few seconds during acceleration from a stopped position.
Consequence SummaryShould this occur, the vehicle may not accelerate as quickly as the driver expects, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryToyota will notify owners and dealers will replace the skid control ecu free of charge. the safety recall began on june 11, 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

On april 28, 2010, toyota motor north america submitted a defect information report (nhtsa recall no. 10v-176) to nhtsa describing a problem in the vehicle stability control (vsc) system in approximately 50,000 model year (my) 2003 toyota sequoia vehicles.according to the report the centering position of the steering angle sensor (sas) in the my 2003 vehicles may not be stored correctly due to a logic problem with the skid control computer programming.the vsc system uses the information from the sas to calculate the driver's intended vehicle direction.this information is cross referenced to sensors that tell the system which direction the vehicle is actually going and the system will, if it determines a variance indicating the vehicle is in a over-steer or under-steer condition, reduce throttle control and apply braking to make a correction in vehicle direction towards what the system believes is the driver's intended path.toyota dealers will replace the skid control electronic control unit in recalled vehicles.toyota has indicated to nhtsa that it does not believe that inappropriate activations of the vsc system present an unreasonable risk to safety because it believes the activations are rare and tend to occur at low speeds when the vehicle is fully controllable and that the activations do not last more than a few seconds.based on interviews with complainants odi believes that the majority of the inappropriate activations of the vsc system occur when turning at low speeds, such as when a driver is pulling into or across the flow of oncoming traffic.complainants report the effect produced by the malfunction of the vsc system is to leave the vehicle without the ability to accelerate up to speed, essentially leaving them creeping along exposed to oncoming traffic, because of the brake activation and reduction of throttle control caused by the vsc system.complainants report that the events can last up to 10 seconds and some complaints report that oncoming traffic had to unexpectedly swerve or severely brake to avoid colliding with the malfunctioning sequoia.during the vsc event the brake lights of the sequoia are not illuminated such that the following traffic is without indication that braking is occurring, nor would the following traffic expect the driver to be applying brakes in such a situation.several near misses were reported.there were also reports of the vsc system malfunctioning and applying vehicle braking unexpectedly while traveling at highway speeds.some complainants reported experiencing malfunction activations of the vsc at both low and higher speeds.odi counted 140 incidents of lower speed inappropriate activations of the vsc system (approximately 10 mph or less - similar to an inappropriate traction control system activation) and 43 incidents of higher speed inappropriate activations of the vsc system (some as high as 60 mph).these numbers include complainants who experienced both types of failures.this investigation is closed based on toyota's recall.

There was no accident, but one is coming unless this gets fixed. the vtrac control system that there is a recall on select models in the 2003 model year is affecting mine as well, toyota states they won't fix it under recall despite being a serious safety hazard. *tr

2003 toyota sequoia - vsc trac, vsc off, and abs dash lights turned on and stay illuminated. taken to dealer multiple times to diagnose. they have finally admitted the vsc computer chip is faulty. this causes the anti-skid brakes to malfunction. after doing further research, i have found that this is a common problem in many toyota sequoias. toyota will not issue a recall, even though the problem is due to a faulty design.

2003 toyota sequioa vsc/trac saftey problem. starts with the dash lights appearing and then can turn suv off and/or turn brake lights off. a definite safety problem. toyota really should recall

Vsc/trac and abs lights came on and despite this being a common failure toyota says i must pay $600+ to have a yaw sensor replaced. toyota needs to step up to the plate and fix this problem.

Toyota sequoia 03 -- brake light has been coming on starting about 50,000 miles, it stays on for weeks then goes out, then comes on again. both the vsc traking light come on and off, now mostly on all the time and now the vehicle shakes and acts like the breaks are on without warning when driving. we have had it to the dealer and they have reset the light numerous times, but it never really lasts for long. i think there should be a recall on this, i know we can't be the first to complain about this. it is now becoming unsafe to drive because of the shaking and lack of steering control.

On several occasions after backing out of the driveway and beginning to accelerate the vsc light comes on and a strange sound is heard from under the truck. the tires are either slipping on snow at the time or loose gravel leftover from the snow. toyota dealership said we need to replace the ecu unite for $1000 because it's not covered in the may 2010 recall based on our vin number. *tr

I had filled a complaint because of my 2003 toyota sequoia. the vsc trac light/vsc light/abs light stays on as a result of attempting to apply the switch. i contacted toyota and they are telling me that my vin # is not one for recall and that they are still investigating the issues. on this site it states that the issue is closed and toyota is recalling them. what is the status? thanks *tr

Vsc and abs lights come on in 2003 toyota sequoia. dealers request that the sensor or ecu be replaced out-of-pocket ($700 - $2000). a lot of complaints have been filed by 2001-2003 sequoia and tundra customers but toyota refuses to issue a recall.

Vsc trac and vsc and brake lights come on and sometimes can be reset by turning the car off and then on. loss of power when this happens sometimes. lately this has been happening on a regular basis.

Inside door handles have broken off on three of the doors. the only door that still works is the driver's side. i have to get out of the car and walk around opening everyone else's door so they can get out of the car. this is obviously not safe in the case of an accident, fire, etc where i might not be able to open all the doors in time. i am thoroughly disappointed by the design flaw that lead to this situation. toyota wants over 200 per door to fix a problem that should never have happened. anytime a passenger is trapped inside a car it can become a dangerous situation very quickly. the second problem that i have with the sequoia involves the traction control system. it was fixed one time under a tsb, however, the problem has since returned. i do not feel like spending 100 for a diagnosis to tell me what i already know is wrong with the truck. *tr

My complaint is the abs/trac control system in my toyota sequoia. it engaged without any reason and i lost power when i was driving in a hot day on the freeway. i had to pull over. there are many other owners who are reporting this issue on many websites. does someone have to die for you guys to take any actions. *tr

My 2003 toyota sequoia has an issue with the vehicle stability control (traction control system). the vsc computer continues to break leaving the car with no traction control. on snowy and icy roads the car will spin out of control due to the size of the vehicle and no assistance from the vsc to slow the car down. i have to keep the car in 4wd all the time to keep it from sliding on snowy or wet streets. this is a known problem with the toyota sequoia and toyota refuses to take responsibility for the issue. there are pages upon pages of complaints all over the internet describing the same issue. toyota refuses to warranty the problem or conduct a recall. the part itself is approximately $1600. i have already had the vsc computer replaced once on the vehicle and now the new computer is broken again. it was first replaced on 1/24/07 when the vehicle had 25,253 miles on it. it broke again on 5/19/09 with 38,995 miles on it. the vehicle now has 43,000 miles on it and the vsc is still inoperable. i don't trust driving the car with my wife or child. but unfortunately i have to spend $2k to fix a vehicle just to trade it in. i have filed a complaint with toyota north america. they refuse to acknowledge there is a problem and have told me i have to accept responsibility for the vehicle no longer being on warranty. even though it only has 43,000 miles and they vsc has broken twice. i have grown increasing concerned about safety especially since i live in the midwest. nothing has been done to resolve the problem. that is my issue. *tr

Abs, vsc/trac lights are on all came up at the same time. it was a rainy day in houston, tx. had to run 55mph at 65mph speed limit due to rain for safety pre-caution. at the time i reached my work place (approx 10miles from my residence), all 3-lights (abs, vsc, trac) turned on. i am the 2nd owner of this vehicle, acquired it from toyota dealer 15 october 2009. with this incident, got curious of any recalls, complaints or issues with 2003 sequoia. unfortunately, i just realized that i am among owners having the same issues. *tr

The skid and traction control system lights turn on for no reason and then the system is disabled all together. i spent a $1000 on it and it came back again. as an electrical engr with 30 years of experience, i am certain it is a marginal design and toyota is wasting people's time and money. *tr

Vech. skid control alarm and reaction takes place without warning or justification. vehicle brakes come on with warning and car shakes because the brakes which are automatically being applied and brake anti skid system is activated. this happened when traveling approx 45 mph. thought i was going to die because of the violent reaction of the vech. this has happen more than five times and toyota wants me to pay $2,100 to correct their engineering error. should i submit a bill for mental anguish? *tr

My 2003 toyota sequoia's trac system is failing which is causing my car to brake automatically without warning. the car has been reliable until now. we were driving at about 35-40mph on a highway when suddenly the car just braked by itself without me stepping on the brakes. soon after i noticed that the trac and abs lights were all on inside my dash. i was able to make it home but my family was terrified because we were almost struck from behind . the vehicle is not safe to drive under this condition . i have not been driving it because i can't afford to fix the problem and i don't want to get killed driving it . i am being told that it's $2000-3000 job . i bought the car because i wanted a safe and reliable car but it has now become an unsafe car and a headache. i am being told that i need a skid booster, brake booster and brake module. i think it's all part of the abs pump assembly. my mfg warranty has expired and my vehicle does have about 78k miles on it which puts me in a bad spot . please help! *tr

We own a 2003 toyota sequoia. the vehicle skid control (vsc) systems is failing. this first occurred shortly after owning the vehicle for 3 years. the system would suddenly activate while moving losing all power and most of the steering control. we reported it to the dealer offered to replace the computer for approx $2000, with no assurance that this would fix the issue. the problem would occur sporadically but now occurs constantly. this is dangerous when driving in traffic in perfect weather conditions. *tr

I own a 2003 toyota sequoia sr5 with 95000 miles. vsc, trac, and abs lights came on. dealership said that the codes are faulty ecu. cost of repair was $1700. the following week lights came back on. this time they tell me it is a faulty speed sensor on the front right. they recalibrated the vehicle and said if it comes back the cost of the repair is $400. following week, the lights come on, same code for the speed sensor, so i have it replaced. two days later, the lights are back on. not certain what will code this time. after reading several posts online, it looks like this is a recurring issue with this vehicle. so, i'm filing a complaint sense there hasn't been a recall.*tr

One day while driving the warning lights for the vsc off and traction control went on, along with the check engine light. at this point we realized that our abs may have failed and our family was in danger. the brakes now lock and there is a grinding and swaying of the car. we'll be taking it in to be checked, obviously, but are concerned with the imminent safety issues along with the large number of similar complaints by other 2003 sequoia owners. *tr

The vehicle skid control/ traction control lights are on in my 2003 toyota sequoia sr5. when the car is started, these lights are off. when the car is put into drive and accelerated, a beeping noise occurs and the power is lost and there is a horrible grinding noise as if something is stuck in the transmission or brakes. when the car stops, the vsc trac and trac off lights come on and the car operates normally. this is very dangerous when trying to pull from a parking space into traffic. the car practically dies and oncoming cars may not be able to stop in time. i have to wait until the nearest car is quite far away before pulling out and this can take quite a while at high traffic times. i have read internet accounts of others with this same make and model and the same problem. some have complained that they were almost in accidents when the problem occurred. unfortunately , the only remedy seems to be to replace the vsc computer which can cost over $1500. toyota has not seemed to cooperate with customers on this. *tr
