Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 1998 through 2010 sienna passenger vehicles manufactured between august 7, 1997 and january 4, 2010, currently registered in or originally sold in connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, washington district of columbia, virginia, west virginia, and wisconsin. the subject vehicles are equipped with the spare tire stowed under the vehicle. if the vehicle is operated in the cold climate regions of the united states where road salt is frequently used, water splashed backwards with high concentrations of road salt can reach the spare tire carrier and corrode the spare tire carrier assembly cable.
Consequence SummaryThe cable may break due to excessive corrosion and the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryThe safety recall is expected to begin during june 2010. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

2007 toyota sienna. consumer writes regarding spare tire recall *tgw the consumer stated his wife took the vehicle to the dealer for the recall. however, when she brought the vehicle home, he noticed the spare tire had been placed in the rear part of the vehicle and secured with a strap. so, when the rear seat was placed in the stored position, the spare tire would be placed on top of the stored seats. the consumer stated the dealer never mentioned the condition of the carrier and never mentioned the tire would be placed in the rear of the vehicle. the consumer stated they completely altered the functionality of the vehicle without his consent and it also created a significant safety issue, which meant the tire was not properly secured in the cab of the vehicle. when the consumer called the dealership, he was informed the parts to properly fix the problem were not available. *jb

I was pumping gas and my child inside the car hit the drivers side sliding door button to open the sliding door. the door is supposed to stop and not open when the gas cover is open. my sliding door failed to deactivate and the sliding door continued to automatically open smashing the gas pump inside the sliding door and the gas tank opening. all mean while fuel is pumping into the car. this bent the gas cover luckily didn't spark a fire due to friction. however now i have to slam the gas cover to get it to shut as some times doors now will not open automatically because the gas cover is not latched shut. once we bent the door as best we could back in place at least to allow it to latch back shut. the doors will automatically open and shut as they should. i have had this occur multiple times. this is a big safety risk especially if you are pumping gas when this happens.

At approximately 1500 on 16 mar 2010, i used the remote to open the power liftgate on my 2007 toyota sienna xle minivan. while loading a children's table, the liftgate started to close on its own. i tried to prevent the gate from closing as my two year old son was in the path of closure. i had to hold the gate open as much as i could and grab him and pull him down and away to prevent the door from shutting and possibly injuring him. in the process, i strained my back. the safety function of the power liftgate seemed to have stopped functioning as well. since the initial failure earlier today, the problem with the liftgate occurs whenever the power function is used to open the door. the liftgate opens and continues until the liftgate reaches its maximum opening then closes itself automatically. when the power function is disabled, the liftgate fails to remain. open. i have not done any maintenance or replaced any parts nor have i contacted the toyota dealer service department in regard to this problem. i have read online that this problem is a common occurence on toyota sienna minivans with multiple reports of injuries occuring.

Occasionally, the driver's side automatic sliding door will close before it should. this has happened approximately 20 times in the last nine months (four times on 12/28/08). it has closed on my son, my mother, my granddaughter, my wife, and me. there is no pattern for when this will happen, so when we take it to the dealer for repair, they can not duplicate the problem. therefore, they have not been able to correct the problem. *tr

I opened the automatic liftgate to my 2007 toyota sienna and upon it reaching the fully open position at the top, it immediately dropped and started to close automatically, which may have caused me an injury if i hadn't quickly moved out of the way. every time i open the liftgate, whether i do it using my key fob, from the interior of the car, or by lifting the handle, the same thing happens causing risk of injury to me and my children. toyota refuses to acknowledge responsibility for this defect despite similar issues being reported with 2004 to 2006 toyota siennas, which ultimately resulted in the issuance of nhtsa campaign 08v244000. *tr

The rubber pad under the switch that is used to open the liftgate on the back of the sienna has gone soft and tar like. if i grab a piece it pulls right off like chewing gum. the black star like substance gets on the hands/fingers too and is hard to wash off. this is a very common defect (not normal wear and tear). toyota won't recall and make it a warranty fix. the part# is 84840-08010 and msrp is $58.53 plus labor. *tr

Driver's side power sliding door failed, would not close (door continually re-opened itself instead of latching closed). after setting the doors to manual, the same door would not open at all. with two infants, it became necessary to crawl over the infant seat installed in the passenger side rear captain's chair in order to reach the infant seat installed behind the driver's seat. the passenger side power sliding door is close to failure (the sheathing on the cable is frayed), which will mean neither of the rear doors will be functional. very unsafe condition in case of accident or fire. toyota will not address this issue, and quotes a price of $3400 to repair.

Left side rear mechanism broke. cable snapped on the sliding door. almost hit my child in the face. power sliding no longer operable must open manually which is very hard for a child. cost to repair is $2000.00 by the local toyota dealership. toyota did cover it under warranty after i called the toyota customer care number because it was just days after the 3 year warranty had expired. 8/11 right side rear mechanism broke (other door). cable snapped again. told we should not use door until repaired which we will be paying for this time. seems like these doors are poorly designed and dangerous when inoperable.

Power rear hatch will open normally, but will release when it reaches the top of it's travel, allowing the unit to come crashing down onto the unsuspecting owner while they are trying to retrieve items from the back of the vehicle. the trapped owner may try to fight off the hatch, but the drive motor continues to close until considerable resistance (i.e. shoulder) is used to fend it off.
01/01/201050000
The rear hatch latch/opening mechanism is soft and gooey. the softening/melting began sometime last year and is getting worse. it makes it almost impossible to open by a child or weaker person. difficult to open for the regular guy. if there was some type of emergency the latch may or may not work. the melted handle also leaves a black tar-like gunk on hands in warm conditions. the van is never parked in the sun - always in the garage. the toyota dealership that services our van said they are seeing this and hearing complaints all the time. they want around $200 to replace.

Rear lift gate was in the open position. while i was standing underneath it, without warning it suddenly failed striking me in the head and pushing me into the rear bumper. fortunately, other then a sore head for a few moments i was not injured. had i not been standing under the lift gate at the time it would have closed on my three year old possibly causing severe injuries or killing her. since the incident the problem has persisted. it will lift into the open position and remain open for a short (unpredictable) period of time then suddenly slam shut. currently we have to have one person hold the lift gate open while loading or unloading the mini-van. *tr

I was in a parking lot with car completely off, the side passenger door was fully opened. i was leaning into the car putting groceries in when the door automatically starting closing on my body. it did not stop and started crushing me. i could not get out and as a result have left hip and right knee pain. the door finally opened on it's own. the door should have sensed resistance or something there but it did not. if i were i small child i would have been seriously injured or killed. *tr

My sienna xle 07 was purchased new in jan of 07. less than 1 month i had a rubbing noise coming from the sliding door on the drivers side. i took the van in and they replaced the locks. in 1 week it was doing the same thing. i had my van in at least once a month the first year of ownership and they would do something and send me home and again the noise would get worse. they even brought in a rep from kansas city and he told me to just put baby powder on the door and it would be fixed. right.then noise gets worse in the summer and will drive you crazy. i was told that no other sienna van had ever had this problem. i love my van, but the noise is horrible and i will never purchase anything else from toyota. we have owned 2 other toyotas and 1 lexus, but this is just a problem with the sienna. *tr

Struts on the rear power lift gate have failed and rear gate will open and immediately start closing with no way to stop it. this occurs when using interior button or remote key fob. if opened manually, the gate slams closed with the potential for significant injury due to the force of the dropping gate. research indicates this was a problem with 2004-2006 models and struts were replaced free of charge. apparently the same struts were used on 2007 models, however the dealer would not warranty replacement. it took about 15 minutes for them to install two new struts for $362.00. the 2004-2006 recall is listed under nhtsa campaign # 08v244000. this is the exact issue i experienced. *tr

Tl* - the contact has a 2004 toyota sienna. the contact stated that on february 18, 2007 while the vehicle was parked outside for two hours, in temperatures of 20 degrees fahrenheit. the contact opened the liftgate by remote, and proceeded to load a stroller and a few bags. the contact was under the liftgate for about 30 under seconds, when suddenly without warning the liftgate began to close on its own, striking the contact on the head, the contact then began to push the liftgate with his back against it until the motor recognized there was an obstacle on the way of the liftgate and stopped closing the liftgate. the contact felt that the failure was due to a combination of the strut failing to stay open and the motor that closes the liftgate. the failure mileage was 36,000 and the current mileage was 36868 miles.
