2001 toyota tacoma frame structure is falling apart before its time. even if they install a new frame it will cost to much money to replace parts to other components not under warranty. the truck would loose its value if the frame has to be replaced. why are we letting toyota get away with this? *tr

In 2007 i noticed the frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma double cab limited four wheel drive was rusting badly. i notified the gault toyota dealership where i buy all my vehicles about the problem and they stated they would monitor the rusting issue. on 01/02/2008 i had my vehicle in for an oil change and they advised my the frame of my truck was rusted through. they are now telling me that there was a buy back program for the rusted framed vehicles from 1990's to the year 2000. i have done some research and had found a number of trucks like mine year 2001 and newer are also rushing out. i was told by gault toyota the toyota co. is looking at each individual case and they are more likely are going to replace the frame and it probably would not be bought back like the older models were. i feel this frame swap could cause me more problems and more money loss. i do not feel it is fair that toyota is not giving the owners of the newer vehicles the option to have the vehicles bought back. this is a problem that needs to be addressed! *tr

2001 toyota tacoma frame rusted through and verified by local dealership. toyota is buying back up to 2000 year models but 2001 models are excluded. when the frame is rusted through, regardless of the year, this is a serious safety issue that the national highway transportation safety administration needs to address with toyota corporation. arbitrarily selecting the years and last vehicle identification number toyota will cover in the buy-back program is ridiculous as this rust issue is bigger than what toyota has anticipated. we filed a claim with toyota they said our vehicle did not qualify for the 150% buy back, however they would buy it back for the current retail value. our truck was built in september 2000 (qualified there), but the vin number was 4,096 past the cut-off (didn't qualify there). toyota builds 3,500 tacomas per week. what makes them think that there weren't some bad frames still in their inventory at the time our truck was built. some 2001 tacoma owners have reported that toyota has taken their truck away from them (after inspection) and have held it for several months and won't give it back to the owners and are only offering retail for a settlement. 2001 tacoma owners have no choice...accept the current retail price we have offered you because you won't get your truck back. 2000 tacoma owners...here is 150% of the retail value and we'll take that rust bucket off your hands.*tr

My 2001 toyota tacoma frame is rusted right through. i contacted my local toyota dealer about this issue and they told me there is a recall on 95-00 tacomas. mine is an 01 but assembled in 09/00. they said my tacoma doesn't fall into the recall category. i paid out of my own pocket to have the rust test performed on my truck, the dealership told me that my frame is in worse condition than some of the 95-00 that they have been taking back on recall. then the went on to say my truck will not pass a state inspection and was unsafe to be on the road. 95-00 owners are getting 1.5% of the kkb value. i expect toyota to do the same for me seeing mine failed rust test as well. *tr

Toyota has issued a customer service program, whereby they are buying back toyota tacoma pickup truck at 150% of the kelley blue book value. this program is only for 1995-2000 vehicles with significant perforated (rusted) frames. i am the original owner of a 2001 tacoma, built in 2000. my frame is rusted straight through and is only 7 years old. my dealer has stated that it is unsafe. i contacted the dealer as well as corporate directly. they are doing nothing to support owners. no repairs, no buyback. i was told today that individuals living in new england should expect this. i believe strongly that the implied warranty extends beyond that statement. there are thousands of tacomas out there not being covered by this program. we are caught between the new buyback program, and the original 5 year warranty. this is wrong. *tr

Toyota tacoma 2001 in great shape other than the frame is rusting out. took it to my mechanic for routine maintenance oil change; he saw some heavy corrosion on the frame. in several places, it has eaten through and has perforations. he says it is getting to be unsafe. i just bought this truck about a year ago at a dealership in ohio and was not made aware that this was a huge problem in the 1996-2003 models, but this issue is apparently very common as toyota did not provide acceptable undercoatings for these models. next step is to take it to the toyota dealership and see what they say. at this point, i would take a buyout but would prefer to have the frame/chassis replaced at their expense. i love this truck and use it everyday. very scared to drive it right now and hope they come through to fix their mistake. this should be a public recall since it is a huge safety concern and people should be made aware that this is a time-bomb accident waiting to happen. these trucks are everywhere on the road. thanks *tr

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma and had it inspected by toyota rep. and it failed the rot test at first they offered me 100% buyback but i refused because older trucks 95-2000 were getting 150% buyback and that absolutely did not seem fair with me having a newer truck so i refused. and they are only offering frame replacement to the 2001-2005 which scares me to death just thinking about it!!! something has to be done about this frame issue before some innocent person is killed!!! *tr

2001 toyota truck - when an auto company finds a product defect, a recall is ordered & the defect fixed at company cost. no one blames the salesman, repairman, dealership, etc if the auto company doesn't address the defect, it loses its reputation & its business goes away. however there is a terrible prejudice when my vehicle has the exact same defect and i am being treated differently than other owners. i purchased a 2001 truck it has been garage kept, detailed and hand waxed twice a year and only has 87k miles. your safety defect of a bad box frame resulted in a recall. the 2000 truck owners with the same issue are being offered a deal of 150% to return the truck. i am not being offered the same deal

The 2001 toyota tacoma truck i owned was recalled for rusting frame. at the time i received the recall notice the frame on my truck was almost 90% rusted. on may 7, 2010 i took it to fox lake toyota dealership for the said recall and application for a corrosion preventative compound was performed by the dealer service department. on early october of this year i notice that large amount of the applied compound are peeling. i took it back to the same dealership on october 20 for inspection related to the peeling issue. the dealership called back october 22 informing me that they can't do anything since almost all of the compound are now gone. the service personnel claim that upon speaking to toyota, it was noted that they are researching it. i was told to take my vehicle back. i have the vehicle with me now but i am afraid to drive not knowing if the frame has rusted throughout. i inquired to the service personnel if the vehicle is safe to drive but did not get a straight answer. with winter approaching the vehicle will be again subjected to the corrosive environment. to date i have not receive a call back from the dealership or toyota as to what action they need to perform. no claim number was also provided by the dealership for me to use in case i call toyota cirectly.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma doublecab that i purchased used in 2008. i recently received a letter from toyota stating that that i should make an appointment to have the frame checked out for corrosion and rust. i did and it failed inspection. it was perforated on both sides of the frame and had excessive rust. toyota offered to replace the frame rather than buy the truck back. i do not feel safe in this vehicle anymore. the rear bumper is rotted through, the frame , and by doing research i've found several recalls that i was unaware of. they want to break down the truck to the frame and replace and rebuild it with the same old parts in a dealership, not a manufactering plant. i was told that toyota does not buy back 2001 tacomas and refuses to negotiate to get this vehicle off the road. this vehicle was not rebuilt when i bought it and think that it is very unfair that i only have one option. this vehicle is unsafe and i will no longer drive it even if they replace the frame.the consumer should have an option to have the vehicle bought back for what it is worth at least.

The frame my 2001 toyota tacoma was built on is rotting and has a whole in it. toyota wants to replace the frame, but the cost exceeds the value of truck. i do not think this is legal. the first customer service rep i spoke to said she would not feel safe in a truck in similar circumstances

Just paid top dollar for a 2001 toyota tacoma only to find on the inside of the frame is completely rotted away andis very unsafe with any weight loaded in it. have found numerous accounts of premature frame failure due to faulty materials documented on the internet. new frame would need to be replaced along with new fasteners.

My 2001 toyota tacoma has a perforated frame. i was issued a letter from toyota explaining the options. one option was to replace my frame. the other option was for toyota to buy back my vehicle at 1.5 % of excellent kelly blue book. i was not given the buy back option and they are trying to force the frame replacement on me. i am not happy with the remedy they have selected for me. this vehicle may never be the same after the frame is replaced. this is not any easy fix . to many parts are involved and i was informed it will take about 2 months to complete these repairs.

Toyota refused to fix dangerous rust defect on 2001 tacoma, which caused a rear differential gear oil leak.

My 2001 toyota tacoma has dealer verified frame rust perforation. when the first letter from toyota came to my door in early 2009 i went directly to my local dealer who did not know anything about this issue and stated to me that they would get back to me with more information as it became available to them. several months later, i was told by the dealer that wisconsin was asking toyota to provide more data on the propose solutions to this issue and had not approved toyota to make any repairs. i was also told that they would contact me when i could get my truck inspected. many more months passed and finally i had enough and called toyota direct. i was assigned a case manager and she said she would help me get my truck inspected. this finally happened on april 27, 2010. now they tell my my only option is a replacement frame, which to me is not acceptable. then lucky 2001 owners who were able to get quick inspections were offered the buy back option. in various forums the ones with the replacement frames are seeing issues with leaking gas tanks, and up charges for incidental items.

2001 toyota tacoma-pass nj state inspection. a friend looked and said your frame is rusted. took it to my local toyota saturday 4/17/10 and they said the truck was unsafe to drive. they will have to replace the frame. i said i needed a truck for a rental they said by monday or tuesday they should have one. it is thursday 4/22/10 and can not get in touch with anyone... i need a truck that is how i put food on my table.. called corporate and they are giving me the run around too... my other concern is after they remove everything and put it back together other things are going to break. also, the resale value of my truck has decreased...

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. she took the vehicle into the dealer to inspect the frame, which she had observed was slightly rusted. the dealer stated that the vehicle was thoroughly rusted and would not allow her to drive the vehicle off of the lot. the entire frame was replaced under the manufacturer's warranty enhancement for frame rust perforation on model trucks in severe cold climate areas with high road salt use (nhtsa item number : 10027968: service bulletin number : tcs-08-018). after the repairs were made to the vehicle, she noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust, the vehicle was using more gas than before and she could literally watch the fuel gauge moving closer to empty as she proceeded. the vehicle would not idle properly and was exhibiting a bucking gesture as if it was not getting enough fuel. while inspecting the vehicle, a personal mechanic noticed that the 02 sensor was hanging from the vehicle and caused the vehicle to exhibit the failures. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they stated the sensor was in the same place as when she first brought the vehicle. no further repairs were made to the vehicle. the failure and current mileages were approximately 126,000. updated 4/30/10 *cn

The frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma is rusted through in several places. toyota has offered to replace the frame for free, but is offering owners of 1995 - 2000 tacomas to buy their trucks from them for 1.5 x the kelley blue book value, at the excellent condition rate regardless of the vehicle's condition. so the owners of the older trucks reap a cash benefit of over 50% of the truck's value, while we owners of 01-04 tacomas end up driving rebuilt vehicles. a toyota rep told me that they're buying the older ones back because they can no longer get replacement frames for them. if that's the case, in a couple of years, owners of trucks like mine will be getting the 150% buyback and the rest of us will be driving our original (rebuilt) trucks with the replacement frames. my local toyota dealer inspected my frame yesterday, told me it failed, and sent me on my way. the vehicle can't be safe - it won't pass the state inspection with holes in the frame. i drive about 12,000 miles a year. the truck has 134,000 miles on it. unless they're building the replacement frames differently, it's possible that the new frame will rot out before the truck wears out otherwise. for a company whose reputation is built on reliability, you'd think they'd want to treat all the owners of the defective vehicles the same. *tr

I am filing a complaint on a 2001 toyota tacoma with a rusty perforated frame. we have documents and pictures of two holes and flaking on our frame. many mechanics have told us that our frame was unsafe, but when brought to toyota dealerships we are told that it passes their 2001-2004 rust perforation program and they sent us away. we are left with an unsafe vehicle and we know that it contains perforation in the frame. we have requested to see the toyota regional representative for south texas, but we are getting the run around. we requested to see the rep a month ago and have heard nothing since. we do have a case manager and # but our case keeps getting closed and our case manager doesn't seem to have any authority to accept pictures of the perforation or to contact the regional representative. we would appreciate a face to face talk with a toyota representative who could explain why our half dollar sized perforation does not qualify for further inspection by toyota. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma rusted frame. called the services dept where i bought the truck and they said that there's no recall or anything to evaluate the problem. that my yr did not qualify for the rusted frame issue. my inspection station said that it's so rusted that he shouldn't pass me. that he would for this yr but forget for next yr. *tr

Received a recall notice letter for my 2001 toyota tacoma (letter stated vehicles covered were 2001-2004). the reason was to inspect frame for rust perforation. upon inspection the vehicle was found to have the perforation. their offer option would be to have the frame replaced. the replacement would come with a warranty of the frame for an additional 15 years(...on the new one.....frame only...) but no other warranty of the affected components removed, handled, or replaced during the frame replacement would be warrantied. i have opened a case with toyota stating that i would be better served with the optional buyout, mentioned in the recall letter, which is available at their option. it is under review. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma with diagnosed rust perforation to frame. toyota instituted a buyback program for 1995 through 2000 for this issue, but will not honor this commitment to vehicles post this window that experience this same safety issue. toyota will only replace frames as countermeasure to this issue and will not warrant this teardown/reassy process that will be performed at dealerships (not return to factory for rework) which will leave the consumer open to additional vehicle (safety) concerns and no commitment from toyota that this process will not affect resale value as well. this is an unacceptable and unsafe stance. i have contacted toyota customer care and assigned case number 0904119004 and awaiting feedback. *tr

I had my 2001 toyota tacoma checked and the frame is rusted out, the dealer deemed it unsafe to drive, i contacted toyota that same night and they said to take it home if you don;t have a ride. dealer said all they can do is a frame replacement and i said this is not acceptable, why isn't toyota treating this the same way as it did the 1995-2000 models??.. i know that the truck will never be the same once the mechanics are done,, this is like going back into production , and i know they're not trained for that.. toyota didn't know what type of warranty i would have after the work was done,, they said that the solution to this problem was decided on 02/06/09 , my truck was evaluated on 02/18/09 a matter of 12 days,, i never received any type of notice on this. my mechanic say the problem when i went for my 3000 mile oil change which i've done since i've owned this truck ,,it only has 84000 miles on it and is in pristine condition.. *tr

Toyota tacoma 2001 perforated frame toyota refuses to publicly declare these cars are unsafe to drive. my frame is perforated and deemed by the local toyota dealer as unsafe to drive. they admitted this is a known problem and i now must accept complete liability if i take the car off the lot. my case manager kevin insisted that toyota has publicly announced a warranty extension on december 8th, but it is physically impossible to notify all the owners. yet he could not make any reference to where i could find this public announcement. toyota insists that this does not constitute a recall, yet his explanation for a recall was a faulty component that causes a safety issues that will be replaced by the manufacturer. this is precisely what the case manager stated toyota is preparing to do. how can toyota be aware of such a safety hazard and not inform the owners. had i not performed routine maintenance, i would still be commuting 130 miles a day at 65 miles and place others at risk. my dealer stated that there are multiple 2001 tacomas in our small town that have already been found to be unsafe other than nhtsa, what authority exists in the united states that has the ability to publicly announce this safety issues and force toyota to recall these vehicles. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma with failing frame due to rust issues. my understanding is that toyota is now offering to replace failing frames on 2001 and newer models as opposed to their buyback of 95-200 models. unacceptable due to the obvious decreased retail value caused by this major issue, not to mention that many certified mechanics state that the frame replacement is a terrible idea due to the electrical, alignment, and structural issues that are common when this is done. never a good idea and toyota knows it. i am in limbo, wanted to trade in my truck, but am not being offered the same plan that 95-2000 owners were. *tr

On 12/23/08 when my vehicle was in for normal service i was told by the dealer that my frame was rotting and the vehicle was not safe to drive. i was told to call toyota corp and a case was assigned (200812230213). on 12/24 a case mgr called me and said that my entire frame had to be replaced and that they would be extending my warranty. he stated that the frame is rotted and unsafe so i was to be provided a loaner from my dealer - but not a like vehicle. i was told i would get a letter outlining the program toyota was introducing. the program as told is different than the one toyota has for pre-2001 tacomas. i was told that program was different and not available because parts (frame) are available. i spoke again with the case mgr on 1/6/09 and was told they do not know when parts will be available, he could not provide me the letter detailing the program, and i had to wait. my vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive by toyota and they have it at the local dealer yet they have not provided me documented details on the issue or the program to remedy it. this is the same issue as pre-2001 tacoma's have yet toyota is not offering the same program. they have now had my truck for 3 weeks and when i spoke with the dealer today they themselves have not gotten official notice from toyota, have no idea of parts availability, have not been told what part numbers to order, and do not know when they may get info. 3 weeks without my vehicle, in a non-like replacement, and with no documented info from toyota is not acceptable. *tr updated 02/05/09. *jb

Toyota issued a recall on 95-2000 tacoma pickup trucks due to frame rot. i have a 2001 tacoma and was concerned that i might have the same issue. i called the dealership i purchased my truck at 3 separate times in the last 6 months to double check and make sure my truck was okay and was assured all three times, by three different individuals, that no such issue pertained to my vehicle and that my truck was fine. last friday (1-2-09) i was unable to pass the state inspection because of frame rot. the dealership confiscated my truck but did provide a rental vehicle and i am now waiting to hear back from toyota about the resolution for my truck. the 95-2000 owners were offered a very fair buy-back program. the 2000-2004 owners who are experiencing the same problem are in a gray area right now. the service people at the dealership say that toyota will be replacing the frames of these trucks rather than buying them back. although that sounds fair at first, when numerous ase certified mechanics (many toyota tacoma owners themselves) are coming out saying that the frame replacement is a horrible idea, i have a concern. they cite ongoing problems that occur as is the case with a major frame swap, mentioning electrical issues, misalignment, uneven wear, rattles and squeaks, etc. the truck will never be the same again. i purchased a toyota for their reliability, dependability and high resale value. the kbb value for my truck has plummeted in just the last couple months, and even with a frame swap, i have been told that the value will drop still further, thus making it near impossible to get even close to what my tuck should be worth. if the mechanic who performed my inspection had not inspected the frame as well, i would be riding around with the potential to injure or kill myself and others without knowing that toyota is aware of these issues and has yet to issue any official statement to owners like me that a serious problem exists. *tr

My 2001 toyota tacoma has failed a frame rot inspection by toyota that has been occurring in tacomas since 1995. a recall was issued on 1995 through 2000 tacomas has been issued and toyota is buying back the pickup at 1 and 1/2 times the suggested blue book on the pickups. i was told that there is no recall on 2001 at this time. i have the same problem as the 1995 through 2000 why should they not be made to recall the 2001 tacoma for an obvious safety problem. i have done alot of research and found many other toyota owners with a 2001 tacoma with the same safety problem how can toyota allow people to drive a product with such a safety problem. the frame can snap and the cab become separated from the frame. toyota should be made to recall all the trucks with this problem as it is only a matter of time before someone is killed because of this problem. i am in the fourth week of dealing with toyota on this problem and still have no answer. i have had to rent a car while i wait for toyota to decide what to do with my truck which the dealer said is unsafe to drive. if toyota knows about this problem how come they are not made to deal with the 2001 owners the same as the 1995 through 2000 owners i think this is unfair for a company not to stand behind a safety issue. please look into this safety problem as someone will be hurt in an accident if toyota does not own up to the problem. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma not covered in 1995-2000 frame rust soft recall of march, 2008. on november 7, 2008 vehicle failed vt state safety inspection due to pervasive penetrating frame rust. although toyota knew of the defective frames prior to the march customer notification, toyota chose not to alert me (owner of a 2001 model) of this condition. on november 14, 2008 and november 19, 2008, toyota dealership and corporate staff verified the rusted frame and noted that vehicle was not safe to drive. although this failure didn't result in injury or death, i am concerned other 2001 owners may not be so lucky. toyota has done nothing to alert 2001 owners of this serious safety defect. we're finding out one at a time as our vehicles fail safety inspections. based upon my observations of the frame, i believe the defect is not simply the absence of a corrosion inhibiting coating, but rather inappropriate metallurgy - i.e. the frame itself could not possibly have been constructed from the correct quality of steel for this type of service. *tr

Purchased a new toyota tacoma and was told our 2001 that we were trading was not part of the recall for frame rust. the dealer offered us $1k for it so we gave it as a gift to our daughters boyfriend. it needed a new muffler and he took it in to have it replaced only to find that the frame was completely rusted out and it did not pass inspection. called toyota customer service and got a case number but this poor kid has now been without a vehicle for over a month. can not get a rental as those folks with 1995 to 2000 got. seems unfair but more than that, what about the safety of all those people driving around in 2001's that have not been recalled!! *tr

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma. recently i became aware that the frame was rusted and the vehicle was unsafe to drive. i contacted toyota and was informed that my 2001 was not covered by their consumer protection program that bought back 1995-2000 tacomas with the same problem, at 150% of the kelly blue book value. they have indicated that they will make me an offer probably at 100% of the kbb value. i have two children in college and 529 plans rocked by the economy and no extra money to spare. i was counting on the 'bullet proof' reliability claims of toyota and to keep the vehicle for several more years. i have enjoyed and appreciated the vehicle until now and cannot replace the truck at the current kbb value. i think this issue has impacted the resale value of these vehicles. more importantly however is that it is my understanding that toyota had notified the vehicle owners of the 1995-2000 tacomas covered by their program, of the possible frame problems. they have not notified any of the owners of the newer vehicles that have, or may have the problem. it is my understanding that the frames could brake in some instances which could cause a serious accident and injury. *tr

My 2001 toyota tacoma truck was showing excessive frame rust. i noticed this when changing the oil. i had mentioned this to a few friends of mine who recently told me of a recall for 1995 through 2000 tacomas for the same reason. i took my truck to the dealership where i purchased the truck new in november of 2000. the service manager inspected the frame and filed a report with toyota. they sent out an inspector who looked at the frame and filed a report. i was told they would be in contact within 2 to 3 weeks. after not hearing from them, i called the service manager back and asked if he had heard anything at which time he had me call the customer assistance number for toyota. they gave me a claim number and said i would be hearing back within 24 hours. i got a call from toyota telling me they were aware of the claim, that my truck was not part of the recall and someone may contact me back. when i asked when, they said they had no answer for me. they also told me my truck was not under warranty at this point, which i was already aware of this fact. my truck was inspected over a month ago and i have received nothing. i am afraid to drive my truck and with winter coming on, i have no vehicle to drive in the snow. my truck has less then 100,000 miles on it and is in excellent shape other then the frame. toyota needs to make this right. i am very disappointed in how they are handling this with the owners of the 2001 and up trucks. they should be required to take responsibility for these vehicles immediately and not by screwing people with offers of less then they are offering the owners of 1995 through 2000. that just adds insult to injury. *tr

There has been no incident as of yet. the truck was taken to the dealership after we went to have the brakes fixed and were told that the frame of the truck was rusting through. the dealer informed us that the recall on our truck would not be put through for another 30 days. and that our truck was safe to drive. how ever i feel that it is unsafe to drive since you can put your hand through the frame where it has rusted. this is our only vehicle and we cannot afford to purchase another at this time. the truck is a 2001 and this is 2008, this truck is used for daily needs and general riding.

No-one has been hurt, injured or killed to our knowledge, yet. the toyota corporation is offering a buy back of 1995-2000 tacomas due to frame failure and manufacturer issues with the frames on the trucks built in those years. we took our 2001 toyota tacoma that was manufactured in oct. of 2000, to a dealership and they refused to look at it because it was not in the buy back range. the frame was extremely rusty and because we had heard about the buy back we wanted it looked at solely because of the oct. 2000 manufacture date. we contacted a lemon law lawyer and they said we have a case, and gave us toyota's corporate number. we were told by toyota that it would be sent through a claims process and they wanted us to make an appointment to have the frame looked at. at the appointment at the dealership, the tech looked at the frame and said that a toyota field representative would need to be brought in due to the concerns he had. the field representative came in from california and looked at the frame. he tapped it with a hammer in a few places and it went through. they told us we could not have our tacoma back as it would not pass inspection any more and arranged a rental. we were told that we would get 150% of the retail price for buy back by one of the toyota employees. we were told at the dealership by the representatives to keep quiet and not tell anyone else about what was happening with our tacoma, which we thought was odd. a month later, we receive a phone call from toyota saying that they would give us only 12,000 dollars for a truck that by their own standards of 150% of retail, though it was the 2001 model year, was worth over $19,700. they told us that it was their final locked in number and that it was take it or leave it. we told toyota that it was terrible that they would treat us this way and told them they would hear from a lawyer in some capacity. we have reported our experience to the attorney general of new york state ...  I have a 2001 toyota tacoma that appears well into the initial stages of frame problems. appears to have excessive rust formation and some bubbling. appears to be the same issue that 95-2000 tacomas are being recalled for. toyota though will not include newer tacomas, with the same problem in their buyback program for the 95-2000's and are offering significantly less when the frames fail. this is both discriminatory and highly insulting to the newer tacoma owners. we should be offered the same buyback options and conditions as the earlier models. free inspections to determine if the problem exists should also be provided, as they are with the earlier models. the frame issue extends well beyond the previously mentioned years and toyota needs to do what is right for all tacoma customers. under their present provisions a 97 tacoma would be bought back by the company for more than my 2001, with the same issue and problem. this is a major safety issue that when identified, renders your vehicle useless and decreases its resale value to nothing. toyota needs to be offer the same buyback option and incentives as with the 95-2000's. they also need to publicly admit that many tacomas of all years are having the same failure. it could cost some unknowing individual their life, if the frame failed. *tr

My 2001 toyota tacoma double cab frame is rusted through. toyota is buying back older ones but the frame is the same or worse on my 2001 with no holes to let water and salt out. this is a potentially dangerous situation and since they bought the older ones back in this area it must be serious. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma diagnosed with frame rot back on 4/2/08. numerous huge holes in right rear frame rail. told by toyota not to drive vehicle as it is unsafe. i have no other vehicle still driving this truck. my vehicle was manufactured 01/01. not part of current buy-back program 1995-2000. i am caught between the current buyback program and the original warranty. the toyota tacoma owners with the same issue are being offered a deal of 150% to return the truck. my truck has the same exact defect as 1995-2000 model why is my offer not the same. i would like my case reviewed. this program should include my 2001. my safety and toyota's reputation are both on the line. *tr

I have a 2001 tacoma that failed frame inspection that was performed by toyota i have had the vehicle for 1 year and basically they are now telling me it is worthless and i believe a danger not only to me but to others on the highway i have softball sized holes in my frame i bought the vehicle for approx. 15,000 that's with taxes and a warranty i purchased at the time now they offered my 10,000 to buy it back while at the same time they are offering 1995 to 2000 owners 150% above full retail? i feel this is unfair it was produced with the same faulty steel that my truck was but they are cutting me off now i am not sure what to do?? also there was a carfax reporting frame damage the dealership told me there ase tech's checked it and it was fine now i wonder??? *tr

We have a 2001 toyota tacoma with complete frame rot. toyota has taken it and given us a free rental. it has been over a month and they say they can't tell us anything however did say that we would probably only get 100% kbb. this 2001 is not within the years of their buy back program. my husband filed a complaint at the beginning of this process sometime in the middle of may. there is a blog on edmunds.com that people write into everyday. more and more 2001 owners are writing saying that they have rot and are turning in their trucks. someone should put pressure on toyota to give owners of newer vehicles the same deal as the older ones in the buy back program. i have heard of 2002 and 2004 trucks failing inspection. people have little information and no recourse available to them. there was one guy saying that kbb of his truck was 7000 and he still owes 15000 on it. toyota has a big problem. the consumer needs help here making them step up. it's way more than just 1995 to 2000 tacomas. all the 2001s i have been hearing about on the blog and older years cannot just be a coincidence. there was a 2002 at the dealership that failed the day we were there for an inspection. *tr

2001 toyota tacoma frame rot - toyota is only including 1995-2000 in their silent recall for frame rot. mine failed their 2 inspections (may 01, 2008 and may 20, 2008) my truck was taken from me. i was told it is unsafe to drive. evidently toyota is paying owners for newer trucks much less money than 1995-2000 tacoma owners. they have a much bigger problem with their production than is being acknowledged and reported. please investigate later model years that exhibit serious frame rot issues before someone in the later model years is seriously injured or killed. i am happy to supply pictures of my specific, completely rusted, frame that has holes in many locations. this truck was well maintained, washed, waxed, garage-kept. the truck body is in fantastic shape. the only problem is the rusted, rotted frame with large holes in it.

Our 2001 toyota tacoma was in for muffler repair when the tech noticed rust on the frame. he said that it was over a 2ft section on one side he could put both hands through and a small section on the other side. since toyota extended their warranty for the same problem on veh yrs 95-2000, i think they have acknowledged enough of a prob that they should include other years if newer trucks than that are exhibiting problems. one tech that looked at our truck said that it prob could not be fixed/ welded. we are still getting other estimates and will prob have to have a toyota tech look at it just to have it on the record. *tr

I, own a 2001 toyota tacoma pick up truck. i bought it new in jan. 2001. i put 93000 miles on it .last june i went to my repair shop to have my leaf springs replaced. much to my surprise the mechanic told me that my frame was rusted so bad that it could not be repaired. i went to the dealer and presented the problem to them. they told me that the road salt was to blame not toyota! now there is a recall on 1995 to 2000 trucks for the same problem. since the rust problem i have not driven my truck it is still registered and insured. the people at toyota should look into this problem before one gets in an accident and somebody gets hurt. there are alot of these trucks on the road. thank you hpl.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma 4x4 with 83,000 miles. i have taken very good care of it and have been very happy with it except for the issue of severe frame rust. the body looks great, however the frame rust is just about all over the underside of the vehicle and includes the brake system, frame, drive train, etc. i have many older vehicles that have seen similar wear and use that have no frame rust whatsoever. this seems to be a common problem with the recently manufactured tacomas and i believe it is due to a manufacturing flaw. *jb

I brake in my driveway at approx. 2 mph, heard a loud thump in the rear end of my 2001 tacoma. when i checked, i found that the driver side front bracket to leaf spring holding the rear axle was actually sitting 2 or 3 inches into the frame rail. the frame had rusted through in that spot, the rust was so bad, that 6 inches of steel on bottom of frame rail was gone in any direction of the leaf spring bracket attachment point. there isn't enough steel left to even attempt a weld to repair it. on close inspection of the frame overall, there are multiple points where the frame rails have disintegrated. my rear axle is sitting off-center, and the car cannot be driven. if normal force or torque is applied, the axle will break free, and this will cause an accident. i heard that there is a recall on tacoma frame rails, so i called the dealer. dealer stated my vin did not have a recall; i called toyota, they told me that i would be contacted in 1 business day. they never called. 2 days later, i called and got transferred to their truck team, got shuffled around for 6 more phone calls over 3 days, when they informed me that they mailed me a notice that i had to have gotten a frame spraying to qualify for the frame recall. i never received such notice, and toyota did not even have my address; which they stated that they got all information from dmv. my dmv info is current, always has been. toyota has given my every type of run-around imaginable, ultimately denying my recall. on websites, there are thousands of people in my same situation...exactly the same. further, there are many people who had the frame spray, which then peeled off within months of application. this seems like toyota deliberately tried to exclude as many people as possible with this frame spray, which wouldn't be necessary in the first place if the frames weren't defective. my truck is dead. *tr

This complaint is in regards to a defective frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma pick-up that was purchased used in february of 2007 with 102,000 miles. a nys inspection was performed upon purchase. the truck now has 130k. september 6th, 2008, while installing at a local tire and break shop, the tech noticed serious frame rot on the back passenger side of my truck. the shop manager informed me of a voluntary toyota buy-back for 1999-2000 models, warranty policy bulletin pol08-03, dated 3/7/08. i contacted toyota and had the truck immediately inspected by lia toyota service of colonie ny. i was informed the frame was seriously rotted, and the truck no longer safe to drive. i was told the following to rectify the situation: 1. the dealership could not 'go to bat for me' to assist me with dealing with toyota for a recall request; 2. 2001 models are not usually covered in the recall. and; 3. if covered, i would not get a loaner car; i would not receive the 150% value as is standard for 1995-2001 models this is a slap in the face. why should the 2001 models be excluded from the warranty and recall coverage afforded by the 1995-2001 models? my truck is newer - yet it has the same frame rot. the fact that the dealer refused to assist me with this process is additionally infuriating. toyota has yet to contact me via the case manager they have assigned me. i don't know if toyota will pay me 100% of the value of my truck for march of 2008 or august of 2008. the blue book value of my truck has dropped significantly since the recall was issued. defective frames are not exclusive to the 1995-2000 model year tacomas - so why is toyota excluding newer models? this is dangerous, perhaps even criminally negligent. toyota should be recalling tacoma trucks manufactured after 2000 that are experiencing massive frame rust - without doing so the company is endangering the lives of tacoma owners. *tr updated 10/22/08*jb updated 02/24/10

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. the contact took her vehicle to the dealer for an oil change and because the check engine light was illuminated. the technician noticed that the under body frame had rusted completely through and the vehicle was unsafe to drive. in december of 2007, a local welder repaired the hole in the frame at the cost of $80. toyota later implemented a buy back program and stated that they would only buy back vehicles from 1995-2000. the failure mileage was 132,910 and current mileage was 139,995.

Toyota tacoma 2001, frame is rusted to the point that it cannot be repaired. truck has 185,000 miles well kept. the body is in perfect condition. frame looks like it is rusting from the inside out. poor design box frame. 7 years and now is useless. toyota should be held responsible for this engineering flaw. *tr
