TIRES - TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
12V542000Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturingfrom 08/28/2000 to 08/27/2004V (Vehicle)150000MFRTOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION11/23/201211/23/2012
Defect SummaryToyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 tacoma light trucks manufactured from august 28, 2000, through august 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. the spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. a lift plate on the carrier is used to help raise, lower and retain the tire. during its manufacture, the lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with anti-corrosion materials. if the plate is insufficiently coated and the vehicle is operated in cold climate regions where road salts are frequently used, road spray can reach the carrier assembly and corrode the lift plate.
Consequence SummaryCorrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryA remedy for this defect is currently being developed. toyota will notify owners when a remedy plan has been finalized. the recall is expected to begin during december 2012. owners may contact their toyota dealer or the toyota customer experience center at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Dt: the contact stated a recall letter was received pertaining to the lower ball joints. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the recall on 12/27/05 where the ball joints were replaced and the vehicle was realigned. the vehicle began to shimmy after about three month later and it was taken to an independent repair shop. the front tires were balance which resulted in difficulty of steering due to the tires becoming worn. the contact expressed that the worn tires were a direct result of the improper alignment performed by the dealer on 12/27/05. after 3 days, the vehicle was taken back to the independent repair shop for tire rotation because the difficulty in steering had worsened. the rotation fixed the problem for awhile however after a couple of months the steering worsened. on 6/26/06, the vehicle was taken to another independent tire dealer for realignment. the contact can provide specifications for the realignment of the tires before the alignment, after the alignment and the specified ranged. *nm

While rotating the tires on my new 2003 toyota tacoma p/u for the first time (6,000 miles), i noticed a buldge in the drivers side front tire (goodyear wangler hp p205/75r15) local goodyear dealer(auto world) called goodyear, they said no warranty, but they will sell me a replacement tire at there cost of $97.00 (as if i'll buy another goodyear tire)! how many have to be hurt or injured before something is done! or are they following firestone / bridgestone's lead..... *la

The consumer complained about a firestone tire problem. all 5 tires split on the sidewall. firestone sent an inspector, and was told it was a road hazard. vehicle was driven less than 1000 miles and the tires were defective. *ak the second set of tires had three tires with splits in the same area. the firestone inspector suggested that this was due to rocks or some sort of problem cutting the tires. the consumer had never driven the vehicle off of paved roads. all eight tires had splits in the same area. *sc
TIRES - TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE

After getting off the highway, as i was pulling away at the end of the exit ramp i noticed the spare tire had fallen from the truck and was in the middle of the road. i was able to quickly back up and load the spare onto the back of the truck. i noticed part of the carrier was rusted to the spare, but the middle of the carrier had rusted through. i had participated in toyota's frame recall a little over a year ago and believe they should have seen how bad the situation was at that time, and done something to rectify the problem. i had just spent a half-hour driving home on the highway. i can't imagine the damage that could have been caused had the tire dropped at highway speeds during rush hour rather than at 10 mph!! in searching the internet, this is an all too common occurrence for older tacomas. i don't understand why this isn't considered a safety issue and subject to recall. *tr
