Defect SummaryEquipment description: this recall is for trailer towing wire harness converters installed by dealers or for installation on 1999-2000 toyota tundra and tacoma vehicles. the connectors integrate the vehicle's tail lights, brake lights, and turn signal lights with those equipped on the trailer, are defective. affected part numbers are: pt207-34000, pt207-34002, pt207-04981, and pt214-04985. in the tundra vehicles, the circuitry utilized in the converter was inadequate to properly manage vehicle and/or trailer-side voltage spikes. if the converter is exposed to a voltage spike, it may cause an electrical short or open circuit within the converter. in the tacoma vehicles, due to deficient waterproofing and improper installation location of the converter, which is mounted in the lower portion of the tailgate cavity of the vehicle, an electrical short circuit will occur if water enters the converter housing.
Consequence SummaryAn electrical short or open circuit can cause a fault in the converter and a non-operational condition of the trailer lights. if the vehicle is driven without trailer lights, it may be difficult for other drivers to see the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will notify the customers and install a redesigned trailer towing wire harness converter free of charge. owner notification began august 27, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesAlso contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

2005 toyota corolla did not pass emissions inspection. car taken to lia toyota, northampton, ma. dealer said car computer needed to be replaced but had to order part from toyota. so far it's been two weeks and the part may be delivered in another two weeks per toyota. over 1600 of these computers are on backorder with no delivery date supplied. i will have to pay for another emissions inspection, could e stopped by police and have my insurance increased for six years. i feel this is a known defect and toyota is not really responding to me or other customers and because the pert (very expensive) cannot be supplied before 4/30 i am incurring additional expenses. it should not take a month to get a part. the dealership is waiting for 12 of these computers and is being shipped two and has 3 cars that don't even run. *tr

The sliding doors on our toyota sienna are defective. they stick shut ot freeze if the temperature gets low enough or there is enough moisture. it's hard to predict the circumstance but the fact is, our kids cannot get in or out of the van and we have had to drive it anyway, three different beepers going off all the way. i have read that this is a common problem for the sienna and yet toyota continues to do n othing about it, denying it, in fact. if we were in an accident, and had to escape quickly, only the driver and passenger could escape. when side doors are frozen shut, kids have to exit through the back door which is also dangerous. i know my 2004 is past the warranty, but if this is a common a problem as i have read, shoukdn't there be a recall?
