 This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure.the failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.by letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles.the affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.toyota alleges high amounts of road salts are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.toyota stated: toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.e., not following the recommendations in the owner's manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues.the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.further toyota states: please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner.by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the fuel tank mounting system (i.e., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.toyota states: toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.rather, toyota is taking this action at odi's request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue.my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyota's actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom.the actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

 Tl- the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact was driving approximately 5 mph over a road hump when he heard a loud popping noise. after inspecting the vehicle, he noticed that the front fuel tank strap was severely rusted and fractured. the vehicle was able to be driven approximately 10 mph and was taken to the dealer who replaced the fuel tank strap. the manufacturer was contacted and reimbursed the contact for the part. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000. kmj

 This vehicle was purchased at greensburg toyota, greensburg, pa. this vehicle has had brake lines replaced, fuel lines replaced, the frame corroded and rusted out, fuel lines rusted out, the tie rods rusted out, the tailgate rusted out, the electrical outlets for the backup and tail lights were shorting out, the entire body on this vehicle is rusting. this vehicle is a complete menace to the toyota company. this vehicle had the front axles rusted out and the wheel fell off while driving it.

 I have a 2000 toyota tundra and it has a problem that when the car gets hot the engine will stall out and die without warning. it creates no omd ii errors and the check engine light never appears. the ecm fuse blows on occasion but replacing it does not lead to a running vehicle. it fails to start until the engine compartment cools down. there is fire from the spark plugs and there is fuel pressure in the fuel rail. we have replaced all the relays and fuses in the ecm and efi circuits and all fingers are now pointing to the ecm controller itself. we just changed out the fuel pump and are looking at replacement of all the ignition coils (8) and all the fuel injectors (8). but since all of these components seam to be working that would make little since. the recent recall for the ecm on the matrix & corolla indicate that there may have been problems with the manufacture of ecm units for a much longer period of time since my tundra is exhibiting the same problem. this problem has been getting worse for over 5 years now and the toyota dealers and other toyota specialty shops cannot find the problem since there are no engine codes and the fact that it will start and run fine after it cools down. i have been waiting for it to die and not start at all to hope to find the problem.

 I have a tundra 2000. most of the frame are corroded due to rust. while driving, hit a pot hole and the gas tank straps let go due to corrosion. gas tank drop to the ground, luckily i pull to the side and no accident happen. thanks god. *tr

 Fuel line on driver side on 2000 tundra perforated due to rust. noticed while braking on downgrade portion of large hill. vehicle stopped very poorly, almost resulting in loss of control. had to pay to tow and replace fuel line on vehicle. *tr

 I have a 2000 toyota tundra, access cab, 4wd truck with 160,000 +/- miles. i purchased the vehicle used from the original owner who lived in the akron, ohio area. i have noticed significant section loss to frame members, cross members and cab supports. presently, the frame is completely perforated on the underneath side near the passenger front door. additionally, the passenger middle cab support has corroded completely off, the front drivers cab support has rusted completely away and the front bumper/impact guard has completely rusted off. i have contacted the dealership and corporate headquarters two separate times. they have responded promptly all three times; however, the issue is still be investigated at the executive level. additionally, i have had to replace one of the rear brake lines and the fuel tank strap due to failure from corrosion. the vehicle is in excellent mechanical shape and body is nearly flawless. i have photos available. the frame seems to be most severely deteriorated at the boxed section near the transmission support cross member. under normal driving conditions (i.e. not towing/no payload) this would likely be the point in the structure associated with maximum bending. due to the box design- it is impossible to inspect the total amount of section loss; although, as previously stated the passenger side rail is completely perforated along the underneath side. i can attest that my father has a 2002 toyota tundra with no deterioration. it is unclear if toyota used a different treatment for the later model vehicles. most alarming to me, is how quickly y the corrosion has progressed. since last september, the corrosion has progressed from a surface rust appearance into bubbling and complete deterioration. *tr

 While pulling a travel trailer with our 2000 toyota tundra sr5-v8, we lost power and the check engine came on. after pulling to the side of the interstate, we shut off the engine. after about 5 minutes, we started the engine again, found we had power, but the check engine was still on. we drove another 100 miles to out destination. after several hours, we started the truck again and the check engine light was not on anymore. we had a computer check ran and the code p1121 came up and we were told it would require an accelerator pedal position sensor. we continued to drive the truck for 58 days with no check engine light showing. the check engine light came on again, but went off again. *tr
